Oral health is an integral component of overall well-being, with the oral cavity serving as a channel for external communication and expression of emotions such as stress and pessimism. Oral diseases can intensify feelings of depression, whereas depression can worsen oral health conditions. As a crucial part of the human microbiome, an imbalance in oral microbiota can release oral pathogenic microbes, which, through pathways including the circulation, nervous, and immune systems, can reach the brain and significantly affect the central nervous system. This can lead to dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, further intensifying the development of depression. Similarly, an imbalance in oral microbiota in individuals with depression can intensify the occurrence of oral diseases. The relationship between depression and oral diseases is not isolated but rather a complex interplay in which they mutually influence and act as causative factors. To elucidate the causal relationship between oral diseases and depression and devise strategies for the prevention and treatment of both conditions, we explore the interaction mechanisms between oral diseases and depression from the perspective of oral microbiota. The occurrence of dental caries, periapical periodontitis, and periodontal diseases is closely associated with the excessive proliferation of specific bacteria in the oral cavity, such as Streptococcus mutans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Fusobacterium nucleatum. These bacteria can directly invade the brain through the compromised blood-brain barrier, activating pro-inflammatory cytokines and worsening depressive symptoms. Inflammatory conditions and ulcers in the oral mucosa are caused by various factors, including infection and immune abnormalities. Because of compromised immune function in individuals with depression, these inflammatory responses are often more severe and difficult to control. Malocclusion, trigeminal neuralgia, and temporomandibular joint disorders increase the risk of depression because of psychological stress and changes in the immune system. We also outline the diagnostic and therapeutic considerations for oral diseases in patients with depression, emphasizing the importance of early intervention for disease management. Future research will explore the therapeutic potential of oral microbiota in individuals with depression, with the aim to improve symptoms and treatment outcomes by adjusting oral microbiota, thus providing novel avenues for the prevention and treatment of depression.

With the deepening of the research on the relationship between oral microbiota and systemic diseases, researchers have found that periodontitis is closely related to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, digestive system disease and other systemic diseases. Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) and Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) are common periodontal pathogens, which play a key role in the occurrence and development of periodontitis. At present, it is also found that Fn and Pg are closely related to the occurrence and development of colorectal cancer (CRC). They can affect the occurrence and development of CRC and the therapeutic effect and prognosis of CRC patients through a variety of ways. It can promote tumor cell proliferation by regulating cell division cycle and inhibiting cell apoptosis, inhibit immune cell function to mediate immune escape and tumor metastasis, and create a pro-inflammatory microenvironment suitable for tumor survival. The study of the effect of periodontal pathogens on the occurrence and development of colorectal cancer and its mechanism also allows us to think about new methods, such as vaccine development, immune agents and antibiotic use to better prevent and treat colorectal cancer and improve the prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer.

Restorative materials such as conventional glass ionomer cement (CGIC), resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC), polyacid-modified composite resin (compomer), and giomer have the properties of fluoride release and refill, which may prevent or slow down the progression of caries. The caries resistance of these materials was evaluated according to the following criteria: fluorine-releasing ability, antibacterial activity, mechanical properties and anti-aging properties. The anti-caries effect of these materials mainly depends on the effect of fluoride ions on mineralization. However, materials with strong fluorine release ability, such as CGIC, are mainly used in pediatric dentistry and temporary restoration due to their poor mechanical properties. It is difficult to achieve both fluoride ion release potential and mechanical strength, and there are few materials that can provide ideal mechanical strength while maintaining a high standard of fluoride release. The fluoride releasing and recharging capacity of CGIC, RMGIC, compomer and giomer decrease successively. The trend of material modification, to a certain extent, tends to sacrifice the fluoride release capacity of materials to maintain the ideal mechanical strength. In recent years, scholars have tried to add a variety of fillers to further enhance the anti-cracking ability of materials and add antibacterial agents to compensate for the anti-caries effect to reduce the loss of fluoride release.

Curcumin is a natural medicine with a wide range of sources and low toxicity. It has antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and other pharmacological effects. In recent years, curcumin has attracted much attention in the field of prevention and treatment of oral infectious diseases. Single curcumin is easily degraded during application and has poor water solubility and low bioavailability, but it can be used as a natural photosensitizer to mediate photodynamic treatment of oral infections. Photodynamic therapy has high antibacterial efficiency and can better protect the appearance and function of the affected area. This article reviews the research on curcumin-mediated photodynamic therapy for oral infectious diseases. As a natural photosensitizer, curcumin mediates photodynamic therapy and has shown good therapeutic effects against dental caries, endodontics, periodontitis, oral candidiasis and other oral infectious diseases by enhancing antibacterial ability, increasing the production of reactive oxygen species, and inhibiting the formation of biofilms. In-depth exploration of the mechanism of action of curcumin-mediated photodynamic therapy in different oral infectious diseases can provide new strategies for the prevention and treatment of oral infectious diseases.

For studying the difference of corrosion performance of Inconel 625 surfacing layers obtained through hot wire pulse TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas Welding) surfacing, single - layer and double - layer coatings of Inconel 625 were applied on the surface of 20 steel through surfacing. The corrosion performance of surfacing layers with varying number was analyzed by electrochemical test, intergranular corrosion test and EDS component analysis. Results showed that in Bode diagram, the phase angle of double - layer surfacing was 80°, and that of the single - layer surfacing and substrate decreased by 5°and 20° respectively. The slope of impedance modulus and frequency of double - layer surfacing was the largest, followed by single - layer surfacing, and the minimum was the that of substrate. Additionally, the base material had Warbug diffusion and the smallest capacitance arc, while the double - layer surfacing had the largest capacitance arc. Self - corrosion potentials in single - layer and double - layer surfacing were 374.0 mV and 392.0 mV higher than that of the base material respectively, the corrosion current density decreased by about 99.3% and 99.8%, and the double - layer surfacing spot corrosion potential was 430 mV higher than that of the single - layer. After the intergranular corrosion test, no obvious intergranular corrosion appeared in the surfacing layer, but pitting corrosion was observed. Moreover, the weight loss of the double - layer surfacing corrosion was about 1/5 of the single - layer, and the corrosion penetrated along the columnar intergranular. The alloy elements in the fusion zone between layers and the interface with substrate changed significantly and distributed evenly within each layer. The Fe content of double - layer surfacing was lower than that of the single - layer surfacing, and thus the former had a better corrosion resistance.

The biodiversity of the mycobiome, an important component of the oral microbial community, and the roles of fungal-bacterial and fungal-immune system interactions in the pathogenesis of oral lichen planus (OLP) remain largely uncharacterized. In this study, we sequenced the salivary mycobiome and bacteriome associated with OLP. First, we described the dysbiosis of the microbiome in OLP patients, which exhibits lower levels of fungi and higher levels of bacteria. Significantly higher abundances of the fungi Candida and Aspergillus in patients with reticular OLP and of Alternaria and Sclerotiniaceae_unidentified in patients with erosive OLP were observed compared to the healthy controls. Aspergillus was identified as an "OLP-associated" fungus because of its detection at a higher frequency than in the healthy controls. Second, the co-occurrence patterns of the salivary mycobiome-bacteriome demonstrated negative associations between specific fungal and bacterial taxa identified in the healthy controls, which diminished in the reticular OLP group and even became positive in the erosive OLP group. Moreover, the oral cavities of OLP patients were colonized by dysbiotic oral flora with lower ecological network complexity and decreased fungal-Firmicutes and increased fungal-Bacteroidetes sub-networks. Third, several keystone fungal genera (Bovista, Erysiphe, Psathyrella, etc.) demonstrated significant correlations with clinical scores and IL-17 levels. Thus, we established that fungal dysbiosis is associated with the aggravation of OLP. Fungal dysbiosis could alter the salivary bacteriome or may reflect a direct effect of host immunity, which participates in OLP pathogenesis.

Abstract Background Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a critical role in the pathogenesis of hypoxic pulmonary hypertension (HPH). The role of N7-methylguanosine (m7G) modification in lncRNAs has received increased attentions in recent years. However, the m7G-methylation of lncRNA in HPH has yet to be determined. We have therefore performed a transcriptome-wide analysis of m7G lncRNAs in HPH. Results Differentially-expressed m7Gs were detected in HPH, and m7G lncRNAs were significantly upregulated compared with non-m7G lncRNAs in HPH. Importantly, this was the first time that the upregulated m7G lncXR_591973 and m7G lncXR_592398 were identified in HPH. Conclusion This study provides the first m7G transcriptome-wide analysis of HPH. Importantly, two HPH-associated m7G lncRNAs were identified, although their clinical significance requires further validation.

Background and Purpose: The holotoxin A1, isolated from Apostichopus japonicus, exhibits potent antifungal activities, but the mechanism and efficacy against candidiasis are unclear. In this study we have studied the antifungal effects and mechanism of holotoxin A1 against Candida albicans and in murine oropharyngeal and intra‐abdominal candidiasis. Experimental Approach: The antifungal effect of holotoxin A1 against C. albicans was tested in vitro. To explore the antifungal mechanism of holotoxin A1, the transcriptome, ROS levels, and mitochondrial function of C. albicans was evaluated. Effectiveness and systematic toxicity of holotoxin A1 in vivo was assessed in the oropharyngeal and intra‐abdominal candidiasis models in mice. Key Results: Holotoxin A1 was a potent fungicide against C. albicans SC5314, clinical strains and drug‐resistant strains. Holotoxin A1 inhibited oxidative phosphorylation and induced oxidative damage by increasing intracellular accumulation of ROS in C. albicans. Holotoxin A1 induced dysfunction of mitochondria by depolarizing the mitochondrial membrane potential and reducing the production of ATP. Holotoxin A1 directly inhibited the enzymatic activity of mitochondrial complex I and antagonized with the rotenone, an inhibitor of complex I, against C. albicans. Meanwhile, the complex I subunit NDH51 null mutants showed a decreased susceptibility to holotoxin A1. Furthermore, holotoxin A1 significantly reduced fungal burden and infections with no significant systemic toxicity in oropharyngeal and intra‐abdominal candidiasis in murine models. Conclusion and Implications: Holotoxin A1 is a promising candidate for the development of novel antifungal agents against both oropharyngeal and intra‐abdominal candidiasis, especially when caused by drug‐resistant strains. Periodontitis is an infectious disease caused by a variety of microorganisms. Fusobacterium nucleatum is closely related to periodontitis with a high detection rate. Fusobacterium nucleatum is able to coaggregate with other microorganisms and attach and invade epithelial cells with the help of adhesins. It can also promote the occurrence and development of periodontal diseases and even systemic diseases by destroying periodontal tissues with virulence factors and metabolites and inducing a host immune response. However, at present, drugs assisting periodontal nonsurgical treatment clinically cannot target specific periodontal pathogens, such as Fusobacterium nucleatum, which may lead to problems such as dysbacteriosis or drug resistance. Therefore, studies on the pathogenic mechanism of Fusobacterium nucleatum provide new ideas for the prevention and treatment of periodontitis. The idea is to develop materials, drugs, or probiotics that target adhesins, virulence factors, and metabolites or cut off each pathogenic pathway of Fusobacterium nucleatum to inhibit its proliferation and inflammatory responses in deep periodontal pockets and achieve a balance with other oral microorganisms, and the host is beneficial for the control of periodontitis.
