Neonatal mammalian hearts are capable of regenerating by inducing cardiomyocyte proliferation after injury. However, this regenerative capability in adult mammalian hearts almost disappears. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have been shown to play vital cardioprotective roles in heart repair. Here, we report that EVs from regenerating neonatal heart tissues, after apical resection surgery (AR-Neo-EVs), exhibit stronger pro-proliferative, anti-apoptotic, and pro-angiogenesis activities than EVs from neonatal mouse cardiac tissues (Neo-EVs), effects which are absent in adult mouse heart-derived EVs (Adu-EVs). Proteomic analysis reveals the expression of Wdr75 protein, a regulator of p53, is higher in AR-Neo-EVs than in Neo-EVs. It is shown the regenerative potential of AR-Neo-EVs is abrogated when Wdr75 is knocked down. We further show that delivery of AR-Neo-EVs by sodium alginate hydrogel microspheres is an effective treatment in myocardial infraction. This work shows the potential of using EVs from regenerating tissue to trigger protective and regenerative mechanisms. Background and aims: Over the past decade, numerous studies investigating the relationship between breakfast consumption frequency and handgrip strength and standing long jump have produced conflicting evidence, leading to uncertainty regarding this association. This study aimed to provide further clarity on the relationship between breakfast consumption frequency and handgrip strength and standing long jump. Methods: A comprehensive search of the literature up to September 15, 2023, was conducted on Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, MEDLINE, and CNKI. Six studies related to grip strength and three studies related to standing long jump performance were included in the meta-analysis. For studies defining breakfast consumption frequency as an ordinal variable, the effect sizes of the lowest and highest frequency groups were analyzed. Results: No significant differences in handgrip strength were found between the highest and lowest breakfast consumption groups. Furthermore, unlike in men, women with the highest frequency of breakfast consumption showed significantly higher handgrip strength levels than women with the lowest frequency of breakfast consumption. No significant positive associations were found between breakfast intake frequency and standing long jump levels. Conclusion: These results suggest that while regular breakfast consumption may enhance handgrip strength in women, it does not influence standing long jump performance in both sexes. The study of the co-transport of Cr(VI) and microplastics (MPs) in porous media is important for predicting migration behavior and for achieving pollution removal in natural soils and groundwater. In this work, the effect of MPs on Cr(VI) migration in saturated porous media was investigated at different ionic strengths (ISs) and pHs. The results showed that pH 7 and low IS (5 mM), respectively, promoted the movement of Cr(VI), which was further promoted by the presence of MPs. The Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO) results showed that the repulsive energy barrier between MPs and quartz sand decreased with increasing IS and decreasing pH, respectively, which promoted the retention of MPs in quartz sand and constrained the competition of Cr(VI) for adsorption sites on the surface of the quartz sand, thus facilitating the enhanced migration of Cr(VI), while Cr(VI) behaved conversely. Sodium alginate/nano zero-valent iron-reduced graphene oxide (SA/NZVI-rGO) gel beads could achieve the removal of MPs through a π-π interaction, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic attraction, but the MPs removal would be reduced by 40% due to the competitive adsorption of Cr(VI). Notably, 97% Cr(VI) removal could still be achieved by the gel beads in the presence of MPs. Therefore, the gel beads can be used as a permeation reaction barrier to inhibit the MP-induced high migration of Cr(VI). The Cr(VI) breakthrough curves in reactive migration were well-fitted with the two-site chemical nonequilibrium model. Overall, the findings of this work contribute to the understanding of the migration behavior of Cr(VI) and MPs in saturated porous media and provide a theoretical basis for the remediation of soils and groundwater contaminated with Cr(VI) and MPs.
