Os cistos epidermóides, também denominados cistos cutâneos, são tumores muito freqüentes, que podem requere cuidados cirúrgicos. Na maioria das vezes, em razão da apresentação clínica patognomônica e de curso indolente, são simplesmente removidos. Habitualmente, o diagnóstico clínico é de fácil confirmação na cirurgia devido ao aspecto típico de formação cística preenchida com um fluido cremoso. Comumente tais lesões “típicas” não sofrem investigação histológica após a remoção. Entretanto, este relato de caso de um cisto epidérmico em couro cabeludo vai mais além, produzindo, por meio de técnicas laboratoriais de rotina, uma análise histopatológica, que revelou a existência de um cisto típico, esférico e esbranquiçado, preenchido, predominantemente, pro lâminas de queratina, delimitado por um epitélio estratificado e envolvido por uma cápsula de tecido conjuntivo denso modelado.

PURPOSE: To compare renal dysfunction after right nephrectomy and ligation of the right renal vein with preservation of kidney. METHODS: Animals' weight, pH, density, protein in urine and histological samples of the kidneys were evaluated. Fifteen female rats (Wistar) were divided into three groups. In the control group, right renal vein dissections were performed. In the second group, the right nephrectomy was performed. In the third group, the right renal vein was ligated and the kidney was preserved. Urine samples were taken before, three and seven days after the procedure. Background: Adhesions induced by biomaterials experimentally implanted in the abdominal cavity are basically studied by primary repair of different abdominal wall defects or by the correction of incisional hernias previously performed with no precise definition of the most appropriate model. Aim: To describe the adhesions which occur after the development of incisional hernias, before the prosthesis implantation, in an experimental model to study the changes induced by different meshes. Methods: Incisional hernias were performed in 10 rats with hernia orifices of standardized dimensions, obtained by the median incision of the abdominal wall and eversion of the defect edges. Ten days after the procedure adhesions of abdominal structures were found when hernias were repaired with different meshes. Results: The results showed hernia sac well defined in all rats ten days after the initial procedure. Adhesions of the greater omentum occurred in five animals of which two also showed adhesions of small bowel loops besides the omentum, and another two showed liver adhesions as well as the greater omentum, numbers with statistical significance by Student's t test (p

Many cellular types presents histotopographically relations with the intestinal mucosa and the enterocytes. The latter is the very first type involved during the intestinal absorption process. By means of electrondense protein macromolecule (horse´s spleen ferritin), orally administered, a gut segment, previously called, Prochilodys scrofa was studied in order to have this process clarified. Then the ferritin was observed in the intestinal lumen and among the microvilli of the epithelial cells. The occurrence of endocystosis, (more a pinocytotic-like process) with subsequent granule-gathering, in vesicles of different electrondensing concenctration as well as the ferritin migration process, through the absorptive epithelium, were also observed before the interaction between the enterocytes and the other cellular types that live in the intestinal mucosa, which play a helpful role in the course of the local defense response.

O tempo de passagem de alimentos através do trato digestivo do peixe detritívoro de água doce Prochilodus scrofa foi determinado com o uso de técnicas radiográficas e de sulfato de bário como meio de contraste. Os peixes foram mantidos em tanques com temperatura constante de 23ºC e receberam via oral, através de um cateter, uma mistura de 2,5 partes de ração peletizada moída e 1 parte de suspensão oral do meio de contraste (Celobar). As radiografias foram obtidas em intervalos de 3 horas. Imediatamente após a introdução da mistura, visualizou-se o preenchimento gástrico pelo contraste. Foi observado um esfíncter existente entre os estômagos cárdico e pilórico. Após 3 horas, 80 por cento do intestino proximal estava repleto. Após 6 horas, o contraste atingiu as porções proximal, média e distal do intestino. Após 9 horas, 70 por cento do intestino distal estava repleto, e após 12 horas, havia a marcação do segmento do reto (25 por cento da porção distal do intestino). Food passage time through the digestive tract of a detritivorous freshwater fish (Prochilodus scrofa) was determinate by radiographic techniques using barium sulfate as a contrast medium. The fish were kept in tanks at a constant temperature of 23.5ºC and received by an oral catheter a mixture of 2.5 parts of ground ration and 1 part of oral suspension of contrast medium (Celobar). Radiographs were taken at intervals of 3 hours. Immediately after the introduction of the mixture the stomach was outlined by the contrast. A sphincter was observed between the cardiac and the muscular stomachs. After 3 hours, 80 per cent of the proximal intestine was filled. After 6 hours the contrast reached the proximal, medial and distal portions of the intestine. After 9 hours 70 per cent of the distal intestine was filled and after 12 hours, the rectum segment was still marked (25 per cent of the distal portion of the intestine).

Muitos países possuem estações de pesquisa instaladas na Antártica. Hidrocarbonetos de petróleo e os esgotos lançados no mar pelas estações são as fontes potenciais de poluição na Antártica. Peixes da espécie Trematomus newnesi foram utilizados para investigar o potencial genotóxico e os efeitos sobre a morfologia de fígado e brânquias da água diante dos tanques de combustível e da saída de esgoto da Estação Antártica Brasileira ?Comandante Ferraz?, em experimentos in situ e no laboratório. No Ensaio de Mn e ANE, observou-se que a freqüência de R foi, em geral, menor nos controles do que nos grupos expostos, tanto nos bioensaios como nos experimentos in situ, porém não houve diferenças estatisticamente significativas em nenhum dos experimentos. As lesões branquiais mais observadas, nos grupos expostos, foram hipertrofia do epitélio e telangiectasia lamelar. No fígado, as lesões predominantes foram a vacuolização lipídica e a presença de macrófagos, principalmente nos peixes dos experimentos in situ. Não foram verificadas diferenças significativas nos índices de lesões histopatológicas entre os grupos expostos e os controles em nenhum dos experimentos. Contudo, os resultados obtidos sugerem que dos dois locais analisados nas proximidades da Estação Brasileira, a saída de esgoto apresenta maior potencial de risco para T. newnesi. Many countries have installed research stations in Antarctica. Petroleum hydrocarbons and the sewage disposed into the sea by the stations are potential sources of pollution in Antarctica. Trematomus newnesi specimens were used to assess genotoxic potential and histopathology of the liver and gills of the water surrounding the Brazilian Antarctic Station ?Comandante Ferraz?. Fish were exposed to seawater at the sewage outfall and in front of the fuel tanks, in both in situ and laboratory assays. The Mn and ENA assay showed that the frequency of R was, in general, lower in the control groups than in the exposed ones in both in situ and laboratory assays, however there were no statistically significative differences in any of the experiments. The most frequent branchial lesions observed in the exposed groups were epithelium hipertrophy and lamelar telangiectasis. In the liver, predominant microscopic findings included lipid vacuolization and macrophages, specially in fish from the in situ experiments. Exposed groups did not show significative differences in the histopathological indexes from those of the controls in any of the experiments. Nevertheless, our results suggest that of the places studied the sewage outlet may present a greater potential of risk to T. newnesi nearby the Brazilian Station.

O pintado (Pseudoplatystoma coruscans), também comumente chamado de surubim é um dos peixes mais apreciados pelo mercado consumidor brasileiro, devido à excelente qualidade do filé. No entanto, trabalhos sobre a morfologia do seu trato digestório são escassos. No presente trabalho, a descrição histológica do esôfago, estômago e intestino do pintado, visa contribuir e fornecer subsídios científicos para compreensão dos processos digestivos dessa espécie. Foram obtidas amostras do esôfago, estômago e de todas as regiões intestinais e posteriormente analisadas à microscopia óptica. No esôfago, observou-se epitélio de revestimento do tipo pavimentoso estratificado não-queratinizado, apresentando células epiteliais, mucosas e grande quantidade de células claviformes. A presença de células claviformes são indicadores de que este órgão está sujeito a lesão e lacerações, participando no sistema de defesa do organismo. O estômago do pintado constitui-se de um órgão em forma de J, distinguindo-se três regiões: cárdica, fúndica e pilórica. O epitélio de revestimento encontrado é do tipo colunar simples. A superfície epitelial é interrompida pelas criptas gástricas, no fundo das quais se abrem as glândulas gástricas, sendo estas criptas mais profundas na região cárdica ou proximal do estômago. As glândulas gástricas apresentam-se maiores e mais numerosas no segmento proximal, diminuindo em quantidade e tamanho no sentido caudal, o que está relacionado a uma maior demanda na secreção de muco para proteção e digestão de proteínas. O intestino do pintado constitui-se de três regiões distintas e denominadas: intestino proximal, intestino médio e intestino distal ou reto. No epitélio intestinal foram encontrados macrófagos e linfócitos indicando uma barreira celular de defesa no organismo. No intestino distal, observou-se epitélio com cutícula estriada mais baixa do que nos segmentos anteriores. Podemos concluir que o pintado apresenta características particulares quanto à estrutura microscópica do seu trato digestório, em alguns aspectos, se comparado a outros teleósteos. Pintado (Pseudoplatystoma coruscans), also commonly called surubim, is one of the most appreciated fish by the Brazilian consumer market, due to the excellent filet quality. However, works on the morphology of their digestive tract are scarce. In this work, the histological description of the esophagus, stomach and intestine of pintado, seeks to contribute and to supply scientific information for the better understanding of the digestive process of these species. Samples were obtained from esophagus, stomach and from all the intestinal areas and later analyzed with light microscope. In the esophagus, epithelium is stratified pavimentous type and was observed no queratinization, presenting epithelial cells, mucous membranes and great amount of club cells. The presence of club cells indicates that this organ is subjected to lesion and lacerations, participating in the organism defense system. The stomach of pintado is constituted of an organ in J form, being there distinguished three areas: cardic, fundic and piloric. The epithelium of the stomach is simple colunar type. The epithelial surface is interrupted by the gastric crypts, in the bottom of which opens up the gastric glands, being these deeper crypts in the cardic area or proximal of the stomach. The gastric glands come larger and more numerous in the proximal segment, decreasing in amount and size in the caudal way, what is related to a larger demand in the mucus secretion for protection and digestion of proteins. The pintado`s intestine is constituted of three different areas and denominated: proximal intestine, medium intestine and distal intestine or rectum. In the intestinal epithelium there were found macrophages and lymphocytes indicating a cellular barrier for the organism defense. In the distal intestine, epithelium was observed with cuticle grooved lower than in the previous segments. We can conclude that pintado presents private characteristics in relation to the microscopic structure of its digestive tract, in some aspects, if compared to other teleosts.
