Search

Undisturbed galaxy clusters are characterized by a massive and large elliptical galaxy at their center, i.e. the Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG). How these central galaxies form is still debated. According to most models, a typical epoch for their assembly is z~1-2. We have performed a detailed multi-wavelength analysis of the core of XDCPJ0044.0-2033 (XDCP0044), one of the most massive and densest galaxy clusters currently known at redshift z~1.6, whose central galaxy population shows high star formation compared to lower-z clusters and an X-ray AGN located close to its center. SINFONI J-, H- and KMOS YJ-, H- bands spectroscopic data have been analyzed, together with deep archival HST photometric data in F105W, F140W, and F160W bands, Chandra X-ray, radio JVLA data at 1-2 GHz, and ALMA band-6 observations. In the central region of the cluster (~70x70 kpc^2), 2 systems of interacting galaxies have been identified and studied (Complex A and B), with a total of 7 confirmed cluster members. These galaxies show perturbed morphologies and 3 of them show signs of AGN activity. In particular, 2 type-1 AGN with typical broad lines have been found at the center of each complex (both of them X-ray obscured and highly accreting; Eddington ratio ~0.5), while a type-2 AGN has been discovered in Complex A. The AGN at the center of Complex B is also detected in X-ray while the other 2 are spatially related to radio emission. The 3 AGN provide one of the closest AGN triple at z>1 revealed so far with a minimum(maximum) projected distance of ~10(40) kpc. The observation of high star formation, merger signatures and nuclear activity in the core of XDCP0044 suggests that all these processes are key ingredients in shaping the nascent BCG. According to our data, XDCP0044 could form a typical massive galaxy of 10^12 Msun, hosting a Black Hole of 2x10^8-10^9 Msun, in a time scale of the order of ~2.5 Gyrs., 15 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables. 21 pags., 12 figs., 4 tabs., The See Change survey was designed to make z > 1 cosmological measurements by efficiently discovering high-redshift Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) and improving cluster mass measurements through weak lensing. This survey observed twelve galaxy clusters with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spanning the redshift range z = 1.13-1.75, discovering 57 likely transients and 27 likely SNe Ia at z ~ 0.8-2.3. As in similar previous surveys, this proved to be a highly efficient use of HST for supernova observations; the See Change survey additionally tested the feasibility of maintaining, or further increasing, the efficiency at yet higher redshifts, where we have less detailed information on the expected cluster masses and star formation rates. We find that the resulting number of SNe Ia per orbit is a factor of ~8 higher than for a field search, and 45% of our orbits contained an active SN Ia within 22 rest-frame days of peak, with one of the clusters by itself yielding 6 of the SNe Ia. We present the survey design, pipeline, and supernova discoveries. Novel features include fully blinded supernova searches, the first random forest candidate classifier for undersampled IR data (with a 50% detection threshold within 0.05 mag of human searchers), real-time forward-modeling photometry of candidates, and semi-automated photometric classifications and follow-up forecasts. We also describe the spectroscopic follow-up, instrumental in measuring host galaxy redshifts. The analysis of the cluster environment is a valuable instrument to investigate the origin of AGN and star-forming galaxies gas fuelling and trigger mechanisms. To this purpose, we present a detailed analysis of the point-like X-ray sources in the Bullet cluster field. Thanks to $\sim600$ ks Chandra observations, we produced a catalogue of 381 X-ray point sources up to a distance of $\sim$1.5 virial radius and with flux limits $\sim1\times10^{-16}$ and $\sim8\times10^{-16}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in the 0.5-2 keV and 2-10 keV bands, respectively. We found a strong (up to a factor 1.5-2) and significant ($\ge$4$\sigma$) over-density in the full region studied $0.3R_{200}$10$^{43}$ ergs s$^{-1}$) in the region $0.3R_{200}, Comment: 28 pages, accepted for publication in the A&A

Dusty, star-forming galaxies have a critical role in the formation and evolution of massive galaxies in the Universe. Using deep far-infrared imaging in the range 100-500um obtained with the Herschel telescope, we investigate the dust-obscured star formation in the galaxy cluster XDCP J0044.0-2033 at z=1.58, the most massive cluster at z >1.5, with a measured mass M200= 4.7x10$^{14}$ Msun. We perform an analysis of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 12 cluster members (5 spectroscopically confirmed) detected with >3$��$ significance in the PACS maps, all ULIRGs. The individual star formation rates (SFRs) lie in the range 155-824 Ms/yr, with dust temperatures of 24$\pm$35 K. We measure a strikingly high amount of star formation (SF) in the cluster core, SFR (< 250 kpc) > 1875$\pm$158 Ms/yr, 4x higher than the amount of star formation in the cluster outskirts. The XMM-Newton Distant Cluster Project (XDCP) aims at the identification of a well defined sample of X-ray selected clusters of galaxies at redshifts z ≥ 0.8. As part of this project, we analyse the deep archival XMM-Newton exposure of LBQS 2212–1759 to quantify the cluster content. We validate the optical follow-up strategy as well as the X-ray selection function. We base the cluster identification of the extended X-ray sources on deep imaging with the ESO-VLT and on the CFHT-LS. The confirmation of cluster candidates is done by VLT/FORS2 spectroscopy. Photometric redshifts from CFTH-LS D4 are utilised to confirm the effectiveness of the X-ray cluster selection method. The survey sensitivity is computed to have a flux limit of S0.5–2.0 keV ∼ 2.5×10–15 erg s–1 for 50% completeness in an area ∼0.13 deg2. We detect six clusters of galaxies above this level both in X-rays and the optical. Two newly discovered X-ray luminous clusters of galaxies in this work are at z ≥ 1.0 and one is at z = 0.41. Observational constraints on the average radial distribution profile of AGN in distant galaxy clusters can provide important clues on the triggering mechanisms of AGN activity in dense environments and are essential for a completeness evaluation of cluster selection techniques in the X-ray and mm wavebands. The aim of this work is a statistical study with XMM-Newtonof the presence and distribution of X-ray AGN in the large-scale structure environments of 22 X-ray luminous galaxy clusters in the redshift range0.9

We present results from the multi-wavelength study of XMMU J1230.3+1339 at z ~ 1. We analyze deep multi-band wide-field images from the Large Binocular Telescope, multi-object spectroscopy observations from VLT, as well as space-based serendipitous observations, from the GALEX and Chandra X-ray observatories. We apply a Bayesian photometric redshift code to derive the redshifts using the FUV, NUV and the deep U, B, V, r, i, z data. We achieve an accuracy of $\triangle z/(1+z)$ = 0.07 (0.04) and the fraction of catastrophic outliers is $\eta$ = 13 (0)%, when using all (secure) spectroscopic data, respectively. The i - z against z colour-magnitude relation of the photo-z members shows a tight red-sequence with a zero point of 0.935 mag, and slope equal to -0.027. We observe evidence for a truncation at the faint end of the red-cluster-sequence and the Butcher-Oemler effect, finding a fraction of blue galaxies $f_b \approx$ 0.5. Further we conduct a weak lensing analysis of the deep 26' $\times$ 26' r-band LBC image. The observed shear is fitted with a Single-Isothermal-Sphere and a Navarro-Frenk-White model to obtain the velocity dispersion and the model parameters, respectively. Our best fit values are, for the velocity dispersion $\sigma_{SIS}$ = 1308 $\pm$ 284, concentration parameter c = 4.0$^{+14}_{-2}$ and scale radius r$_{s}$ = 345$^{+50}_{-57}$ kpc. Combining our mass estimates from the kinematic, X-ray and weak lensing analyses we obtain a total cluster mass of $M^{tot}_{200}$ = (4.56 $\pm$ 2.3) $\times$ 10$^{14}$ M$_{\sun}$. This study demonstrates the feasibility of ground based weak lensing measurements of galaxy clusters up to z ~ 1.

[Abridged] XMMU J2235.3-2557 is one of the most distant X-ray selected clusters, spectroscopically confirmed at z=1.39. We characterize the galaxy populations of passive members, the thermodynamical properties of the hot gas, its metal abundance and the total mass of the system using imaging data with HST/ACS (i775 and z850 bands) and VLT/ISAAC (J and K_s bands), extensive spectroscopic data obtained with VLT/FORS2, and deep Chandra observations. Out of a total sample of 34 spectroscopically confirmed cluster members, we selected 16 passive galaxies within the central 2' (or 1 Mpc) with ACS coverage, and inferred star formation histories for a sub-sample of galaxies inside and outside the core by modeling their spectro-photometric data with spectral synthesis models, finding a strong mean age radial gradient. Chandra data show a regular elongated morphology, closely resembling the distribution of core galaxies, with a significant cool core. We measure a global X-ray temperature of kT=8.6(-1.2,+1.3) keV (68% c.l.). By detecting the rest-frame 6.7 keV Iron K line, we measure a metallicty Z= 0.26(+0.20,-0.16) Zsun. In the likely hypothesis of hydrostatic equilibrium, we obtain a total mass of Mtot(1, with a baryonic content, both its galaxy population and intra-cluster gas, in a significantly advanced evolutionary stage at 1/3 of the current age of the Universe., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in A&A (v2: typos/language style corrections, updated references)

By means of our own cosmological-hydrodynamical simulation and semi-analytical model we studied galaxy population properties in clusters and groups, spanning over 10 different bands from UV to NIR, and their evolution since redshift z=2. We compare our results in terms of galaxy red/blue fractions and luminous-to-faint ratio (LFR) on the Red Sequence (RS) with recent observational data reaching beyond z=1.5. Different selection criteria were tested in order to retrieve galaxies belonging to the RS: either by their quiescence degree measured from their specific SFR ("Dead Sequence"), or by their position in a colour-colour plane which is also a function of sSFR. In both cases, the colour cut and the limiting magnitude threshold were let evolving with redshift, in order to follow the natural shift of the characteristic luminosity in the LF. We find that the Butcher-Oemler effect is wavelength-dependent, with the fraction of blue galaxies increasing steeper in optical colours than in NIR. Besides, only when applying a lower limit in terms of fixed absolute magnitude, a steep BO effect can be reproduced, while the blue fraction results less evolving when selecting samples by stellar mass or an evolving magnitude limit. We then find that also the RS-LFR behaviour, highly debated in the literature, is strongly dependent on the galaxy selection function: in particular its very mild evolution recovered when measured in terms of stellar mass, is in agreement with values reported for some of the highest redshift confirmed (proto)clusters. As to differences through environments, we find that normal groups and (to a lesser extent) cluster outskirts present the highest values of both star forming fraction and LFR at low z, while fossil groups and cluster cores the lowest: this separation among groups begins after z~0.5, while earlier all group star forming properties are undistinguishable., revised version, A&A accepted (11 pages, 6 figures)

We report the discovery of a massive, X-ray-luminous cluster of galaxies at z=1.393, the most distant X-ray-selected cluster found to date. XMMU J2235.3-2557 was serendipitously detected as an extended X-ray source in an archival XMM-Newton observation of NGC 7314. VLT-FORS2 R and z band snapshot imaging reveals an over-density of red galaxies in both angular and color spaces. The galaxy enhancement is coincident in the sky with the X-ray emission; the cluster red sequence at R-z ~ 2.1 identifies it as a high-redshift candidate. We investigate various galaxy population properties of the massive X-ray luminous galaxy cluster XDCP J0044.0-2033 at z=1.58, which constitutes the most extreme matter density peak at this redshift currently known. We analyze deep VLT/HAWK-I NIR data in the J- and Ks-bands, complemented by Subaru imaging in i and V, Spitzer observations at 4.5 micron, and new spectroscopic observations with VLT/FORS2. We detect a cluster-associated excess population of about 90 galaxies, which follows a centrally peaked, compact NFW galaxy surface density profile with a concentration of c200~10. Based on the Spitzer 4.5 micron imaging data, we measure a stellar mass fraction of fstar,500=(3.3+-1.4)% consistent with local values. The total J- and Ks-band galaxy luminosity functions of the core region yield characteristic magnitudes J* and Ks* consistent with expectations from simple z_f=3 burst models. However, a detailed look at the morphologies and color distributions of the spectroscopically confirmed members reveals that the most massive galaxies are undergoing a very active mass assembly epoch through merging processes. Consequently, the bright end of the cluster red-sequence is not in place, while at intermediate magnitudes [Ks*,Ks*+1.6] a red-locus population is present, which is then sharply truncated at magnitudes fainter than Ks*+1.6. The dominant cluster core population comprises post-quenched galaxies transitioning towards the red-sequence at intermediate magnitudes, while additionally a significant blue cloud population of faint star-forming galaxies is present even in the densest central regions. Our observations lend support to the scenario in which the dominant effect of the dense z~1.6 cluster environment is an accelerated mass assembly timescale through merging activity that is responsible for driving core galaxies across the mass quenching threshold of log(Mstar/Msun)~10.4., Comment: 23 pages, 19 color figures, accepted for publication in A&A, v2 matches journal version

The goal of this paper is twofold. Firstly, we present F-VIPGI, a new version of the VIMOS Interactive Pipeline and Graphical Interface (VIPGI) adapted to handle FORS2 spectroscopic data. Secondly, we investigate the spectro-photometric properties of a sample of galaxies residing in distant X-ray selected galaxy clusters, the optical spectra of which were reduced with this new pipeline. We provide basic technical information about the innovations of the new software and, as a demonstration of the capabilities of the new pipeline, we show results obtained for 16 distant (0.65 < z < 1.25) X-ray luminous galaxy clusters selected within the XMM-Newton Distant Cluster Project. We performed a spectral indices analysis of the extracted optical spectra of their members, based on which we created a library of composite high signal-to-noise ratio spectra representative of passive and star-forming galaxies residing in distant galaxy clusters. The spectroscopic templates are provided to the community in electronic form. By comparing the spectro-photometric properties of our templates with the local and distant galaxy population residing in different environments, we find that passive galaxies in clusters appear to be well evolved already at z = 0.8 and even more so than the field galaxies at similar redshift. Even though these findings would point toward a significant acceleration of galaxy evolution in densest environments, we cannot exclude the importance of the mass as the main evolutionary driving element either. The XMM-Newton Distant Cluster Project (XDCP) aims at the identification of a well defined sample of X-ray selected clusters of galaxies at redshifts z>0.8. We present a catalogue of the extended sources in one the deepest ~250 ksec XMM-Newton fields targeting LBQS 2215-175 covering the CFHTLS deep field four. The cluster identification is based, among others, on deep imaging with the ESO VLT and from the CFHT legacy survey. The confirmation of cluster candidates is done by VLT/FORS2 multi-object spectroscopy. Photometric redshifts from the CFHTLS D4 are utilized to confirm the effectiveness of the X-ray cluster selection method. The survey sensitivity is computed with extensive simulations. At a flux limit of S(0.5-2.0 keV) ~ 2.5e-15 erg/s we achieve a completeness level higher than 50% in an area of ~0.13 square degrees. We detect six galaxy clusters above this limit with optical counterparts, of which 5 are new spectroscopic discoveries. Two newly discovered X-ray luminous galaxy clusters are at z>1.0, another two at z=0.41 and one at z=0.34. For the most distant X-ray selected cluster in this field at z=1.45 we find additional (active) member galaxies from both X-ray and spectroscopic data. Additionally, we find evidence of large scale structures at moderate redshifts of z=0.41 and z=0.34. The quest for distant clusters in archival XMM-Newton data has led to the detection of six clusters in a single field, making XMM-Newton an outstanding tool for cluster surveys. Three of these clusters are at z>1, which emphasises the valuable contribution of small, yet deep surveys to cosmology. Beta-models are appropriate descriptions for the cluster surface brightness to perform cluster detection simulations in order to compute the X-ray selection function. The XMM-Newton - Blanco Cosmology Survey project (XMM-BCS) is a coordinated X-ray, optical and mid-infrared cluster survey in a field also covered by Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect surveys by the South Pole Telescope and the Atacama Cosmology Telescope. The aim of the project is to study the cluster population in a 14 deg$^2$ field. In this work, we present a catalog of 46 X-ray selected clusters from the initial 6 deg$^2$ survey core. We describe the XMM-BCS source detection pipeline and derive physical properties of the clusters. We provide photometric redshift estimates derived from the BCS imaging data and spectroscopic redshift measurements for a low redshift subset of the clusters. We derive the cluster log N - log S relation using an approximation to the survey selection function and find it in good agreement with previous studies. We carry out an initial comparison between X-ray luminosity derived masses and masses from optical estimators from the Southern Cosmology Survey for a subset of the cluster sample. Optical masses based on cluster richness and total optical luminosity are found to be significantly higher than the X-ray values. (abridged), Accepted to A&A. We report on the discovery of a very distant galaxy cluster serendipitously detected in the archive of the XMM-Newton mission, within the scope of the XMM-Newton Distant Cluster Project (XDCP). Context: Multi-wavelength surveys for clusters of galaxies are opening a window on the elusive high-redshift (z>1) cluster population. Well controlled statistical samples of distant clusters will enable us to answer questions about their cosmological context, early assembly phases and the thermodynamical evolution of the intracluster medium. Aims: We report on the detection of two z>1 systems, XMMU J0302.2-0001 and XMMU J1532.2-0836, as part of the XMM-Newton Distant Cluster Project (XDCP) sample. We investigate the nature of the sources, measure their spectroscopic redshift and determine their basic physical parameters. Methods: The results of the present paper are based on the analysis of XMM-Newton archival data, optical/near-infrared imaging and deep optical follow-up spectroscopy of the clusters. Results: We confirm the X-ray source XMMU J0302.2-0001 as a gravitationally bound, bona fide cluster of galaxies at spectroscopic redshift z=1.185. We estimate its M500 mass to (1.6+/-0.3) times 10^{14} Msun from its measured X-ray luminosity. This ranks the cluster among intermediate mass system. In the case of XMMU J1532.2-0836 we find the X-ray detection to be coincident with a dynamically bound system of galaxies at z=1.358. Optical spectroscopy reveals the presence of a central active galactic nucleus, which can be a dominant source of the detected X-ray emission from this system. We provide upper limits of X-ray parameters for the system and discuss cluster identification challenges in the high-redshift low-mass cluster regime. A third, intermediate redshift (z=0.647) cluster, XMMU J0302.1-0000, is serendipitously detected in the same field as XMMU J0302.2-0001. A precise understanding of the relations between observable X-ray properties of galaxy clusters and cluster mass is a vital part of the application of X-ray galaxy cluster surveys to test cosmological models. An understanding of how these relations evolve with redshift is just emerging from a number of observational data sets. The current literature provides a diverse and inhomogeneous picture of scaling relation evolution. We attempt to transform these results and the data on recently discovered distant clusters into an updated and consistent framework, and provide an overall view of scaling relation evolution. We study in particular the M-T, L_X-T, and M-L_X relation combining 14 published data sets supplemented with recently published data of distant clusters and new results from follow-up observations of the XMM-Newton Distant Cluster Project (XDCP). We find that the evolution of the M-T relation is consistent with the self-similar prediction, while the evolution of X-ray luminosity for a given temperature and mass for a given X-ray luminosity is slower than predicted. Our best fit results for the evolution factor E(z)^alpha are alpha = -1.04+-0.07 for the M-T relation, alpha = -0.23+0.12-0.62 for the L-T relation, and alpha = -0.93+0.62-0.12 for the M-L_X relation. We find that selection biases are the most likely reason for apparent inconsistencies between different published data sets. The new results provide the currently most robust calibration of high-redshift cluster mass estimates based on X-ray luminosity and temperature and help us to improve the prediction of the number of clusters to be found in future galaxy cluster X-ray surveys, such as eROSITA. The comparison of evolution results with hydrodynamical cosmological simulations suggests that early preheating of the intracluster medium provides the most suitable scenario to explain the observed evolution., Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Observational galaxy cluster studies at z>1.5 probe the formation of the first massive M>10^14 Msun dark matter halos, the early thermal history of the hot ICM, and the emergence of the red-sequence population of quenched early-type galaxies. We present first results for the newly discovered X-ray luminous galaxy cluster XMMU J1007.4+1237 at z=1.555, detected and confirmed by the XMM-Newton Distant Cluster Project (XDCP) survey. We selected the system as a serendipitous weak extended X-ray source in XMM-Newton archival data and followed it up with two-band near-infrared imaging and deep optical spectroscopy. We can establish XMMU J1007.4+1237 as a spectroscopically confirmed, massive, bona fide galaxy cluster with a bolometric X-ray luminosity of Lx=(2.1+-0.4)\times 10^44 erg/s, a red galaxy population centered on the X-ray emission, and a central radio-loud brightest cluster galaxy. However, we see evidence for the first time that the massive end of the galaxy population and the cluster red-sequence are not yet fully in place. In particular, we find ongoing starburst activity for the third ranked galaxy close to the center and another slightly fainter object. At a lookback time of 9.4Gyr, the cluster galaxy population appears to be caught in an important evolutionary phase, prior to full star-formation quenching and mass assembly in the core region. We present a comprehensive galaxy cluster study of XMMU J1230.3+1339 based on a joint analysis of X-ray data, optical imaging and spectroscopy observations, weak lensing results, and radio properties for achieving a detailed multi-component view of this newly discovered system at z=0.975. We find an optically very rich and massive system with M200$\simeq$(4.2$\pm$0.8)$\times$10^14 M$\sun$, Tx$\simeq$5.3(+0.7--0.6)keV, and Lx$\simeq$(6.5$\pm$0.7)$\times$10^44 erg/s, for which various widely used mass proxies are measured and compared. We have identified multiple cluster-related components including a central fly-through group close to core passage with associated marginally extended 1.4GHz radio emission possibly originating from the turbulent wake region of the merging event. On the cluster outskirts we see evidence for an on-axis infalling group with a second Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG) and indications for an additional off-axis group accretion event. We trace two galaxy filaments beyond the nominal cluster radius and provide a tentative reconstruction of the 3D-accretion geometry of the system. In terms of total mass, ICM structure, optical richness, and the presence of two dominant BCG-type galaxies, the newly confirmed cluster XMMU J1230.3+1339 is likely the progenitor of a system very similar to the local Coma cluster, differing by 7.6 Gyr of structure evolution., 26 pages, 14 color figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present a multi-wavelength study of galaxy populations in the core of the massive, X-ray luminous cluster XMMU J2235 at z=1.39, based on VLT and HST optical and near-infrared photometry. Luminosity functions in the z, H, and Ks bands show a faint-end slope consistent with being flat, and a characteristic magnitude M* close to passive evolution predictions of M* of local massive clusters, with a formation redshift z>2. The color-magnitude and color-mass diagrams show evidence of a tight red sequence of massive galaxies, with overall old stellar populations, generally early-type morphology, typically showing early-type spectral features and rest-frame far-UV emission consistent with very low star formation rates (SFR~250kpc, with the central cluster region already appearing effectively quenched. Massive galaxies in the core of this cluster appear to be in an advanced evolutionary stage in terms of both star formation and mass assembly. The high-mass end of the galaxy stellar mass function is essentially already in place, and the stellar mass fraction estimated within r500 (~1%, Kroupa IMF) is already similar to that of local massive clusters. On the other hand, morphological analysis of the massive red sequence galaxies suggests that they are smaller than similarly massive local early-types. While possibly affected by systematics and biases, this result might imply that, in spite of the overall early assembly of these sources, their evolution is not complete, and processes like minor (and likely dry) merging might still shape their structural properties to resemble those of their local counterparts, without substantially affecting their stellar mass or host stellar populations.[abridged], 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We report on the discovery of the X-ray luminous cluster XMMU J100750.5+125818 at redshift 1.082 based on 19 spectroscopic members, which displays several strong lensing features. SED modeling of the lensed arc features from multicolor imaging with the VLT and the LBT reveals likely redshifts ~2.7 for the most prominent of the lensed background galaxies. Mass estimates are derived for different radii from the velocity dispersion of the cluster members, M_200 ~ 1.8 10^{14} Msun, from the X-ray spectral parameters, M_500 ~ 1.0 10^{14} Msun, and the largest lensing arc, M_SL ~ 2.3 10^{13} Msun. The projected spatial distribution of cluster galaxies appears to be elongated, and the brightest galaxy lies off center with respect to the X-ray emission indicating a not yet relaxed structure. XMMU J100750.5+125818 offers excellent diagnostics of the inner mass distribution of a distant cluster with a combination of strong and weak lensing, optical and X-ray spectroscopy., A&A, accepted for publication

We present a weak-lensing analysis of the z=1.4 galaxy cluster XMMU J2235.3-2557, based on deep Advanced Camera for Surveys images. Despite the observational challenge set by the high redshift of the lens, we detect a substantial lensing signal at the >~ 8 sigma level. This clear detection is enabled in part by the high mass of the cluster, which is verified by our both parametric and non-parametric estimation of the cluster mass. Assuming that the cluster follows a Navarro-Frenk-White mass profile, we estimate that the projected mass of the cluster within r=1 Mpc is (8.5+-1.7) x 10^14 solar mass, where the error bar includes the statistical uncertainty of the shear profile, the effect of possible interloping background structures, the scatter in concentration parameter, and the error in our estimation of the mean redshift of the background galaxies. The high X-ray temperature 8.6_{-1.2}^{+1.3} keV of the cluster recently measured with Chandra is consistent with this high lensing mass. When we adopt the 1-sigma lower limit as a mass threshold and use the cosmological parameters favored by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe 5-year (WMAP5) result, the expected number of similarly massive clusters at z >~ 1.4 in the 11 square degree survey is N ~ 0.005. Therefore, the discovery of the cluster within the survey volume is a rare event with a probability < 1%, and may open new scenarios in our current understanding of cluster formation within the standard cosmological model., Accepted to ApJ for publication. 40 pages and 14 figures

XMMU J1229+0151 is a rich galaxy cluster with redshift z=0.975, that was serendipitously detected in X-rays within the scope of the XMM-Newton Distant Cluster Project. HST/ACS observations in the i775 and z850 passbands, as well as VLT/FORS2 spectroscopy were further obtained, in addition to follow-up Near-Infrared (NIR) imaging in J- and Ks-bands with NTT/SOFI. We investigate the photometric, structural and spectral properties of the early-type galaxies in the high-redshift cluster XMMU J1229+0151. Source detection and aperture photometry are performed in the optical and NIR imaging. Galaxy morphology is inspected visually and by means of Sersic profile fitting to the 21 spectroscopically confirmed cluster members in the ACS field of view. The i775-z850 colour-magnitude relation (CMR) is derived with a method based on galaxy magnitudes obtained by fitting the surface brightness of the galaxies with Sersic models. The i775-z850 CMR of the spectroscopic members shows a very tight red-sequence with a zero point of 0.86+-0.04 mag and intrinsic scatter equal to 0.039 mag. The CMR obtained with the galaxy models has similar parameters. Stellar masses and formation ages of the cluster galaxies are derived by fitting the observed spectral energy distributions (SED) with models based on Bruzual & Charlot 2003. We obtain a star formation weighted age of 4.3 Gyr for a median mass of 7.4e10 Msun. Instead of an unambiguous brightest cluster galaxy (BCG), we find three bright galaxies with a similar z850 magnitude, which are, in addition, the most massive cluster members, with ~ 2e11 Msun. Our results strengthen the current evidence for a lack of significant evolution of the scatter and slope of the red-sequence out to z~1.

X-ray luminous clusters of galaxies at z~1 are emerging as major cosmological probes and are fundamental tools to study the cosmic large-scale structure and environmental effects of galaxy evolution at large look-back times. We present details of the newly-discovered galaxy cluster XMMU J0104.4-0630 at z=0.947 and a probable associated system in the LSS environment. The clusters were found in a systematic study for high-redshift systems using deep archival XMM-Newton data for the serendipitous detection and the X-ray analysis, complemented by optical/NIR imaging observations and spectroscopy of the main cluster. We find a well-evolved, intermediate luminosity cluster with Lx=(6.4+-1.3)x10^43 erg/s (0.5-2.0 keV) and strong central 1.4 GHz radio emission. The cluster galaxy population exhibits a pronounced transition toward bluer colors at cluster-centric distances of 1-2 core radii, consistent with an age difference of 1-2 Gyr for a single burst solar metallicity model. The second, less evolved X-ray cluster at a projected distance of 6.4 arcmin (~3 Mpc) and a concordant red-sequence color likely forms a cluster-cluster bridge with the main target as part of its surrounding large-scale structure at z~0.95., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Distant clusters of galaxies are ideal laboratories for cosmic evolution studies and — as key tracers of large-scale structure with a high redshift leverage — they are also sensitive cosmological test objects [1]. We have initiated the XMM-Newton Distant Cluster Project (XDCP), a serendipitous survey for X-ray luminous z>1 clusters using archival XMM-Newton data, in order to provide a statistically complete sample for evolutionary and cosmological studies. The interim goal of the XDCP is the construction of an X-ray flux limited sample of ∼30 galaxy clusters beyond redshift one; the estimated XMM-Newton final archive potential is to provide more than 100 such objects. A comprehensive XDCP project overview can be found in [2]. Here we present selected results on the statistics of the X-ray data and the efficacy of the distant cluster candidate selection.

Statistical studies of ROSAT selected cluster samples at z 1. We are currently engaged in the XMM-Newton Distant Cluster Project (XDCP) [1], a serendipitous X-ray survey with the goal to construct a statistically complete sample of at least 30 galaxy clusters at z>1 for evolutionary and cosmological studies. In these proceedings we show that the prospects of finding very distant cooling core clusters are very promising for ongoing XMM surveys if these systems exist at lookback times of more than 8 Gyrs.

We have discovered 11 ultra-faint ($r\lesssim 22.1$) low surface brightness (LSB, central surface brightness $23\lesssim \mu_r\lesssim 26$) dwarf galaxy candidates in one deep Virgo field of just $576$ arcmin$^2$ obtained by the Large Binocular Camera (LBC) at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). Their association with the Virgo cluster is supported by their distinct position in the central surface brightness - total magnitude plane with respect to the background galaxies of similar total magnitude. They have typical absolute magnitudes and scale sizes, if at the distance of Virgo, in the range $-13\lesssim M_r\lesssim -9$ and $250\lesssim r_s\lesssim 850$ pc, respectively. Their colors are consistent with a gradually declining star formation history with a specific star formation rate of the order of $10^{-11}$ yr$^{-1}$, i.e. 10 times lower than that of main sequence star forming galaxies. They are older than the cluster formation age and appear regular in morphology. They represent the faintest extremes of the population of low luminosity LSB dwarfs that has been recently detected in wider surveys of the Virgo cluster. Thanks to the depth of our observations we are able to extend the Virgo luminosity function down to $M_r\sim -9.3$ (corresponding to total masses $M\sim 10^7$ M$_{\odot}$), finding an average faint-end slope $\alpha\simeq -1.4$. This relatively steep slope puts interesting constraints on the nature of the Dark Matter and in particular on warm Dark Matter (WDM) often invoked to solve the overprediction of the dwarf number density by the standard CDM scenario. We present a satellite mission concept to measure the dark energy equation of state parameter w with percent-level precision. The Very Ambitious Dark Energy Research satellite (VADER) is a multi-wavelength survey mission joining X-ray, optical, and IR instruments for a simultaneous spectral coverage from 4microns (0.3eV) to 10keV over a field of view (FoV) of 1 square degree. VADER combines several clean methods for dark energy studies, the baryonic acoustic oscillations in the galaxy and galaxy cluster power spectrum and weak lensing, for a joint analysis over an unrivalled survey volume. The payload consists of two XMM-like X-ray telescopes with an effective area of 2,800cm^2 at 1.5keV and state-of-the-art wide field DEPFET pixel detectors (0.1-10keV) in a curved focal plane configuration to extend the FoV. The X-ray telescopes are complemented by a 1.5m optical/IR telescope with 8 instruments for simultaneous coverage of the same FoV from 0.3 to 4 microns. The 8 dichroic-separated bands (u,g,r,z,J,H,K,L) provide accurate photometric galaxy redshifts, whereas the diffraction-limited resolution of the central z-band allows precise shape measurements for cosmic shear analysis. The 5 year VADER survey will cover a contiguous sky area of 3,500 square degrees to a depth of z~2 and will yield accurate photometric redshifts and multi-wavelength object parameters for about 175,000 galaxy clusters, one billion galaxies, and 5 million AGN. VADER will not only provide unprecedented constraints on the nature of dark energy, but will additionally extend and trigger a multitude of cosmic evolution studies to very large (>10 Gyrs) look-back times., 14 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in the SPIE conference proceedings

International audience; Aims. Observations and cosmological simulations show galaxy clusters as a family of nearly self-similar objects with properties that can be described by scaling relations as a function of mass and time. Here we study the scaling relations between the galaxy velocity dispersion (σv) and X-ray quantities, such as X-ray bolometric luminosity (LBolX,500) and temperature (TX) in galaxy clusters at high redshifts (0.64 ≤ z ≤ 1.46). We also compare our results with the analogous study of the local HIFLUGCS sample.Methods. For the analysis, we use a set of 15 distant galaxy clusters extracted from the literature and selected via different methods. We also use a sample of ten newly discovered clusters selected via their X-ray emission by the XMM-Newton Distant Cluster Project (XDCP), with more than ten confirmed spectroscopic members per cluster. For both samples, the same method was used to determine σv. We also study the evolution of this scaling relation by comparing the high redshift results with the data from the HIFLUGCS sample, which is taken as a representative of the conditions in the local Universe. For such an analysis, we restrict the study to the clusters in the common LBolX,500 range. We also investigate the LX − TX and the σv − TX relations for the 15 clusters from the literature sample.Results. We report the results of the X-ray and kinematic analysis of ten newly detected high redshift clusters and provide their spectroscopic and kinematic details. For the entire distant sample, we find a slope fully consistent with the one typical of local clusters, albeit with a large associated uncertainty (~26%). We repeat the fit by freezing the slope to the value found for the HIFLUGCS systems restricted to the same luminosity range as our sample to investigate the evolution of the amplitude alone. We find a positive offset of ΔA/A = 0.44 ± 0.22 if the self-similar evolution is neglected, hence indicating the possible need for including evolutionary effects. However, the LX − TX relation is found to be in good agreement with the local relation without any significant redshift evolution. Finally, the σv − TX relation appears to slightly deviate from the theoretical expectation that galaxies and gas particles have a similar specific kinetic energy. However, the associated uncertainty is currently too large for making any conclusive statement in this regard.

We present the spectroscopic confirmation of a structure of galaxies surrounding the radio galaxy MRC0156-252 at z = 2.02. The structure was initially discovered as an overdensity of both near-infrared selected z > 1.6 and mid-infrared selected z > 1.2 galaxy candidates. We used the VLT/FORS2 multi-object spectrograph to target ~80 high-redshift galaxy candidates, and obtain robust spectroscopic redshifts for more than half the targets. The majority of the confirmed sources are star-forming galaxies at z > 1.5. In addition to the radio galaxy, two of its close-by companions (< 6'') also show AGN signatures. Ten sources, including the radio galaxy, lie within |z - 2.020 | < 0.015 (i.e., velocity offsets < 1500 km/s) and within projected 2 Mpc comoving of the radio galaxy. Additional evidence suggests not only that the galaxy structure associated with MRC0156-252 is a forming galaxy cluster but also that this structure is most probably embedded in a larger scale structure., 11 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

We report the discovery of a galaxy cluster at z = 1.490 originally selected as an extended X-ray source in the XMM-Newton Distant Cluster Project. Further observations carried out with the VLT-FORS2 spectrograph allowed the spectroscopic confirmation of seven secure cluster members, providing a median system redshift of z = 1.490 ± 0.009. The color-magnitude diagram of XMMU J0338.8+0021 reveals the presence of a well-populated red sequence with z − H ≈ 3, albeit with an apparent significant scatter in color. Since we do not detect indications of any strong star formation activity in these objects, the color spread could represent the different stellar ages of the member galaxies. In addition, we found the brightest cluster galaxy in a very active dynamical state, with an interacting, merging companion located at a physical projected distance of d ≈ 20 kpc. From the X-ray luminosity, we estimate a cluster mass of M200 ~ 1.2 × 1014 M⊙. The data appear to be consistent with a scenario in which XMMU J0338.8+0021 is a young system, possibly caught in a moment of active ongoing mass assembly.

We report on the discovery of two galaxy clusters, SPT-CL J2332-5358 and SPT-CL J2342-5411, in X-rays. These clusters were also independently detected through their Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect by the South Pole Telescope, and confirmed in the optical band by the Blanco Cosmology Survey. They are thus the first clusters detected under survey conditions by all major cluster search approaches. The X-ray detection is made within the frame of the XMM-BCS cluster survey utilizing a novel XMM-Newton mosaic mode of observations. The present study makes the first scientific use of this operation mode. We estimate the X-ray spectroscopic temperature of SPT-CL J2332-5358 (at redshift z=0.32) to T = 9.3 (+3.3/-1.9) keV, implying a high mass, M_{500} = 8.8 +/- 3.8 \times 10^{14} M_{sun}. For SPT-CL J2342-5411, at z=1.08, the available X-ray data doesn't allow us to directly estimate the temperature with good confidence. However, using our measured luminosity and scaling relations we estimate that T = 4.5 +/- 1.3 keV and M_{500} = 1.9 +/- 0.8 \times 10^{14} M_{sun}.
