Objectives: To compare the frequency of patients' oral health problems and prevention needs among Slovenian and international dentists with the aim to validate the four oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) dimensions across six clinical dental fields in all World Health Organization (WHO) regions. Methods: An anonymous electronic survey in the English language was designed using Qualtrics software. A probability sampling for Slovenia and a convenience sampling strategy for dentist recruitment was applied for 31 countries. Dentists engaged in six dental fields were asked to categorize their patients' oral health problems and prevention needs into the four OHRQoL dimensions (Oral Function, Orofacial Pain, Orofacial Appearance, and Psychosocial Impact). Proportions of patients' problems and prevention needs were calculated together with the significance of Slovenian and international dentists' differences based on dental fields and WHO regions. Results: Dentists (n=1, 580) from 32 countries completed the survey. There were 223 Slovenian dentists (females: 68%) with a mean age (SD) of 41 (10.6) years and 1, 358 international dentists (females: 51%) with a mean age (SD) of 38 (10.4). Pain-related problems and prevention needs were the most prevalent among all six dental fields reported by dentists ; Slovenian (37%) and 31 countries (45%). Objectives: To investigate the correlation between the four dimensions of Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) and Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) constructs in a dental patient population. Methods: A cross-sectional study carried out at HealthPartners, Minnesota, USA. This study is a secondary data analysis of available adult dental patients' data. The instruments used to assess the OHRQoL and HRQoL constructs were the Oral Health Impact Profile-version with 49 items (OHIP-49) and Patient-Reported Outcome Measures Information System (PROMIS) measures v.1.1 Global Health instruments Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), respectively. We used Structural Equation Modeling to determine the correlation between OHRQoL and HRQoL. Results: Two thousand and seventy-six dental patients participated in the study. OHRQoL and HRQoL scores correlated with 0.56 (95%CI:0.52-0.60). The OHRQoL and Physical Health dimension of HRQoL correlated with 0.55 (95%CI:0.51-0.59). The OHRQoL and Mental Health dimension of HRQoL correlated with 0.51 (95%CI:0.47- 0.55). When adjusted for age, gender, and depression, the correlation coefficients changed only slightly and resulted in 0.52 between OHRQoL and HRQoL Physical Health, and 0.47 between OHRQoL and HRQoL Mental Health. Model fit statistics for all analyses were adequate and indicated a good fit. Conclusions: OHRQoL and HRQoL overlap greatly. For dental practitioners, the OHRQoL score is informative for their patients' general health status and vice versa. Study results indicate that effective therapeutic interventions by dentists improve patients' OHRQoL as well as HRQoL.

Aim: To validate the Slovenian version (SOC-13-SVN) of Sense of Coherence 13-item instrument (SOC-13) in Slovenian multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. Methods: A consecutive 134 Slovenian MS patients were enrolled in a cross-sectional study in 2013. The reliability of the SOC-13-SVN was assessed for internal consistency by Cronbach's alpha coefficient (a), dimensionality by the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and criterion validity by Pearson correlation coefficient (r) between SOC-13-SVN global score and MSQOL-54 composite scores - Mental Health Composite score (MHC) and Physical Health Composite score (PHC). Results: For the SOC-13-SVN instrument as a whole, internal consistency was high (alfatotal=0.88) while it was low for three subscales (alfacomprehensibility=0.79; alfamanageability=0.66; alfameaningfulness=0.69). The results of the CFA confirmed a three-factor structure with good fit (RMSEA=0.059, CFI=0.953, SRMR=0.065), however, the correlations between the factors were very high (rcomprehensibility/manageability=0.938; rcomprehensibility/meaningfulness=0.811; rmanageability/meaningfulness=0.930). Purpose. To cross-culturally adapt and validate Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life-54 (MSQOL-54) instrument. Methods. The study which enrolled 134 Slovenian multiple sclerosis (MS) patients was conducted from March to December 2013. The internal consistency of the MSQOL-54 instrument was evaluated by Cronbach's alpha coefficient (alpha), and its dimensionality assessed by the principal component analysis (PCA). Results. The whole instrument had high internal consistency (alpha=0.88), as well as the majority of its twelve subscales (alpha=0.83-0.94). The results of the PCA showed two components with eigenvalue greater than 1, explaining 59.4% of the cumulative variance. Further results indicated good construct validity of the instrument with the physical health-related-quality-of-life subscales loading highly on the physical component, and mental health-related-quality-of-life subscales loading highly on the mental component. Conclusion. The Slovenian version of the MSQOL-54 instrument proved to be an internally consistent and accurate tool, well accepted by the Slovenian MS patients. The adequate psychometric properties warrant the scientifically sound version of the MSQOL-54 instrument, which is from now on at disposal to all health professionals dealing with MS patients in Slovenia.

Objectives: To investigate validity and reliability of Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) scores with a 7- day recall period (SDRP) in international prosthodontic patients from six countries (Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Slovenia, Sweden) and to compare the results with OHIP scores based on a one- month recall period (OMRP).Methods: Six consecutive samples of 22 to 59 patients per country (267 patients all together ; mean age±SD: 54.0±17.2 years, 58% women) completed the OHIP twice (once with a SDRP and once with an OMRP) within two weeks in a randomized order when patients’ OHRQoL was considered stable. OHIP scores using the new SDRP were correlated with OHIP scores using the standard OMRP. For each recall period, a validity coefficient was calculated as a Spearman rank correlation coefficient between OHIP summary scores and a 5-point ordinal measure of self- reported oral health status. Test- retest reliability was calculated as an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) based on a one-way ANOVA of the two recall periods’ OHIP scores.Results: Mean OHRQoL impairment differed from 16.2±23.5 in Sweden up to 49.2±42.1 in Germany with an average of 35.2±32.4 (first occasion) to 36.2±30.8 OHIP points (second occasion) for the entire study population. OHIP summary scores of both recall versions were highly correlated with coefficients ranging from r=0.73 to 0.98 with an average of 0.97. Validity coefficients ranged from rS=0.38 to 0.77 with an average of 0.64 for the SDRP and 0.59 for the OMRP. ICC ranged from 0.72 for Japan up to 0.96 for Croatia, Germany, and Hungary, with an average of 0.95.Conclusions: OHIP scores using the new SDRP were valid and reliable when assessed in international prosthodontic patients. Clinical relevance: Conceptual advantages and a slightly higher validity coefficient make a SDRP a preferred frame of reference in clinical applications of the OHIP questionnaire.

PURPOSE: The aim was to investigate the effects of age, gender, Eichner clasification and presence of posterior teeth on the mandibular residual ridge resorption in the region of foramen mentale. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Linear measurements were made on 294 panoramic radiographs using ISSA software. Linear Index was expressed as a proportion of an measurement dependent of the alveolar ridge and the one that is not, what minimizes errors related to magnification and distortion. RESULTS: The resorption was signifficantly affected (p0.05), but they changed the dependent variable only 0, 7% on the right side and 3.4% on the left side. CONCLUSION: Gender and age failed to show an association with mandibular ridge resorption.

The occlusal splint is considered a standard therapy for sleep bruxism (SB), but to the best of our knowledge, no prospective study has ever been done presenting gender differences in the oral-health-related-quality-of-life (OHRQoL) outcomes. Objectives: (a) To determine gender impact on OHRQoL outcomes in patients wearing a full-coverage hard acrylic splint for SB during the first year of splint therapy (ST) and (b) to compare the OHRQoL with controls using the Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaire (OHIP-SVN). Methods: Data were collected from self-completed OHIP-SVN questionnaires administered three times: before ST, 13.89±4.38 days and 8.20±2.44 months after insertion of the splint. The impact of ST on the OHRQoL was assessed in 47 consecutive patients of the University Dental Clinic, who had received an occlusal splint by the same prosthodontist between January 2006 and December 2008. Most of the patients were females (66.0%, n=31, mean age±SD=37.55±14.15 years). Mean age±SD for males was 35.63±12.97 years (n=16). The regional population sample of random adults served as controls (n=400, mean age±SD=41.38±12.66 years). The OHRQoL was calculated as the summary score for the complete questionnaire as well as for all seven subscales of the OHIP-SVN. Results: OHRQoL was statistically significantly improved only in females with SB in the first year of ST (p=0.030 ; Wilcoxon signed ranks), while in males OHRQoL remained unchanged (p=0.172 ; Wilcoxon signed ranks). Within two weeks of ST there were no longer statistically significant differences considering OHRQoL between bruxers and general population (p=0.109 ; Mann-Whitney-U-test). When comparing psychological discomfort prior and several months after the beginning of ST, a significant increase in psychological discomfort was registered only in males (p=0.009 ; Wilcoxon signed ranks). Conclusions: Our data shows that ST for SB increases OHRQoL only in females. The OHRQoL in males remains unchanged. Other treatment modalities should also be considered when treating SB in males.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the effects of gender, age and Eichner clasification on the degree of the posterior mandibular residual ridge resorption. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Proportional area measurements of the posterior mandible were made on 204 panoramic radiographs using ISSA software. The method demarcates two areas of the radiograph ; one defined by the crest of the residual alveolar ridge and the other independent of the alveolar ridge. The proportional value (Posterior Area Index) was expressed as a proportion of an area dependent of the alveolar ridge and the one that is not. The use of proportions rather than actual measurements minimized errors related to magnification and distortion. RESULTS: The method of posterior indices showed that the posterior edentulous mandible resorption was signifficantly affected only by the loss of posterior teeth (molars, molars and premolars): 25.6% for the left side and 22.6% for the right side (p0.05). However the effect of age (right side-2, 3% and left side 1, 6% ; p>0, 05), Eichner clasification (right side-1, 7% and left side 4% ; p>0, 05) and gender changed the dependent variable only 4% (right side) and 5.6% (left side). CONCLUSION: Female gender was not a risk factor for posterior mandibular ridge resorption. Age and Eichner clasification failed to show an association with resorption of the residual posterior mandibular ridge. It depended only on the presence of posterior teeth.

Sažetak Posljednjih godina u Hrvatskoj se shvatilo koliko je nužno da pacijent sam procijeni vlastito zdravlje, što je istodobno dodatak dosadašnjem praćenju kliničkih indikatora oralnih bolesti. Svrha rada: Željelo se procijeniti OHRQoL koristeći se upitnikom za OHIP kod pacijenata uključenih u izradu novih potpunih proteza i to prije završene terapije i poslije nje, te ustanoviti postoji li razlika u spolu. Svrha rada također je bila procijeniti OHRQoL opće populacije te doznati ima li razlika prije terapije i poslije nje u odnosu prema pacijentima kojima su potrebne nove potpune proteze. Ispitanici i postupci: U istraživanju je sudjelovalo 130 ispitanika opće populacije i 70 pacijenata uključenih u protetsku terapiju izrade potpunih proteza. Svi su ispunili hrvatsku verziju upitnika za OHIP (OHIP-CRO49). Rezultati: U općoj populaciji nije bilo veće razlike u OHRQoL-u između muškaraca i žena (p>0, 05). Kod pacijenata prije početka protetske terapije s potpunim protezama, OHRQoL je bio znatno lošiji kod žena negoli kod muškaraca (p0, 05).

Uvod: Određivanje ispravnog smjera protetske plohe nužno je prilikom protetske rehabilitacije, budući da se tako osigurava stabilnost proteze. Cilj: Usporediti točnost triju metoda za određivanje nagiba protetske plohe: a/ paralelizam s Camperovom ravninom, b / paralelizam s plohom koja povezuje papilu incizivu i hamularne udubine, i c / protetska ploha završava u razini eminencije piriformis. Materijali i metode: Osamdeset eugnatih ispitanika fotografirani su s Foxovom ravninom u ustima. Modeli gornje čeljusti montirani su u artikulator te su obavljena mjerenja. Rezultati: Camperova ravnina i Foxova ravnina (predstavlja okluzijsku ravninu) nisu paralelne (x = 3, 52 stupnjeva, P 0, 05). Zaključak: Nagib umjetne protetske plohe trebao bi se određivati temeljem paralelizma s ravninom papila inciziva-hamularne udubine, što je točnije nego prema Camperovoj liniji ili eminenciji piriformis.

Objectives: Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) is an important patient-centered endpoint to be considered when assessing the impact of oral diseases in general population and evaluating the professional interventions. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare OHRQoL in different population groups in Croatia. Methods: The OHIP-CRO49 questionnaire was used and a total of 271 patients participated: General population wearing removable dentures (GPRD, n=42, mean age=47.60), General population without removable dentures (with their own teeth or fixed partial dentures) (GPNRD, n=140, mean age=44.31), Patients having acute dental pain (PAP, n=30, mean age=49.26) and the Control group-Healthy young population with all teeth and without any dental problems (CHP, n=59, mean age=22.31). Results: The scores of the OHIP-CRO49 and all seven subscales were significantly higher for GPRD (summary score=33.48) than for GPNRD (19.71). Aim: Oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) is affected by oral status and degree of prosthodontic rehabilitation. The aim was to evaluate changes of the OHRQoL after different prosthodontic therapies. Materials and Methods: The OHIP49-CRO questionnaire was completed by 228 patients before prosthodontic treatment and one year after rehabilitation with either fixed partial dentures (FPD), or removable partial dentures (RPD), combination of removable partial and complete dentures (CRPCD), complete dentures (CD) and mandibular overdentures on implants (CDI). Another group of 130 healthy subjects from general population was randomly collected as a control group. To determine the impact of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) to the self-percieved oral health related quality of life and to compare the oral-Health-Related-Quality-of-Life (OHRQoL) with a control group. Participants. Eighty one consecutive Slovenian TMD patients participated as a study group and another 400 adults from the regional population sample served as controls. Methods. The mean OHIP-SVN summary scores were computed for all the patients with the same diagnosis and the same subgroup of the axis I according to the RDC/TMD exam form.
