Straipsnyje pirmą kartą analizuojami dviejų Baltijos šalių – Lietuvos ir Latvijos XVI–XVIII a. bronzinių sietynų dekoro motyvai. Gausiau išlikę pavyzdžiai Latvijoje pasitelkiami rekonstruoti prarastą šios rūšies paveldą Lietuvoje, analizuojama dekoro motyvų įvairovė, kilmė ir simbolika. Lietuvai artima Latvija tyrimui pasirinkta ne tik dėl gausaus XVI–XVIII a. bronzinių sietynų paveldo, bet ir dėl LDK ir Livoniją siejusių glaudžių politinių ir ekonominių prekybinių ryšių. Tyrime išryškėjo dvi dekoro elementų grupės: vieni atkeliavo iš gotikos ir vis dar buvo naudojami renesanso laikotarpiu, kitus motyvus imta naudoti kartu su antikinės kultūros puoselėjimo pradžia XVI a. Kontekstui suvokti straipsnyje trumpai apžvelgiami seniausi, gotikos laikų Lietuvoje ir Latvijoje saugomi sietynai su Švč. Mergelės Marijos skulptūrėle. Remiantis išlikusiais pavyzdžiais Lenkijoje, galima teigti, kad mariologinių sietynų Lietuvoje ir Latvijoje galėjo būti dar ir renesanse. Vieni archajiškiausių, dar gotikoje imti naudoti zoomorfiniai motyvai – elnias, liūto galvutė. Su pastaruoju elementu nemažai sietynų išliko Latvijoje, tikėtina kad tokių buvo ir Lietuvoje. Delfinas, dažnai sutinkamas XVI–XVII a. sietynų dekoro elementas, ankstyvosios krikščionybės mene jis laikytas Kristaus Išganytojo simboliu. Lietuvoje išliko Europoje gana reti sietynai su žalčio / gyvatės formos šakomis. Šio nevienareikšmiškos simbolikos dekoro kilmė – Nyderlandai. Lietuvos muziejuose saugomi keturi XVI–XVII a. sietynai su šiuo dekoru. Tiek Lietuvoje, tiek Latvijoje išliko daug sietynų su dvigalviais ereliais. Jie paplitę visoje Europoje ir galėjo reikšti simpatiją ar dinastinius, administracinius ryšius su kuria nors imperija. Gausus sietynų su šiuo motyvu palikimas krikščionių sakraliniuose pastatuose leidžia daryti prielaidą ir apie platesnę, sakralinę dvigalvio erelio reikšmę. Renesanso, vėliau ir baroko laikotarpiu, sietynus imta dekoruoti alegoriniais antikos mitologijos motyvais. Vienas populiariausių – senovės Romos dievas Jupiteris. Jis buvo siejamas su ugnies stichija ir dangiškąją šviesa. Populiarus sietynų dekoro elementas buvo ir sirenos. XVI–XVIII a. sietynų viršūnės puoštos įvairių laikotarpių karių skulptūrėlėmis, kurių simboliką galima interpretuoti kaip teisingumo vykdytojus ir Dieviškosios tvarkos žemėje palaikytojus. XVI–XVIII a. bronziniai sietynai Lietuvoje ir Latvijoje buvo puošiami ne tik figūriniais dekoro elementais, bet ir kompoziciją papildančiais augaliniais motyvais: ūgliais, pumpurais arba gėlių žiedais. Tyrime išryškėjo, kad sietynų viršūnėse montuoti ne atsitiktiniai, bet laikotarpiui aktualūs ir svarbūs simbolinės reikšmės dekoro elementai. Tai galėjo būti alegoriniai ugnį/dangišką šviesą simbolizuojantys dekoro motyvai, dieviškosios tvarkos palaikytojų žemėje ar dieviškąją globą simbolizuojantys motyvai. Taip pat politines sąsajas ar palankumą žymintys heraldiniai dekoro elementai. Reikšminiai žodžiai: bronza, dekoras, gotika, renesansas, barokas. The article analyses for the first time the décor motifs of the bronze chandeliers from Lithuania and Latvia in the 16th–18th century. More abundant objects in Latvia are used to reconstruct the lost heritage of chandeliers in Lithuania, and the variety, origin, and symbolism of décor motifs are analysed. The study revealed two groups of décor elements: some of them came from the Gothic and were still used during the Renaissance, while other motifs were started to use altogether with the beginning of the promotion of antiquity culture in the 16th century. The tops of the chandeliers were not decorated with random but rather relevant and important elements of the symbolic meaning of that period. These could be allegorical motifs of décor symbolising fire/ Heavenly light, motifs symbolising Divine order on earth or Divine patronage, as well as heraldic décor elements denoting political relationships or friendliness. Straipsnyje analizuojami XVI–XVIII a. Lietuvoje ir Latvijoje išlikusių bronzinių sietynų puošybos elementai: aptariama simbolika ir kultūriniai veiksniai, lėmę jų paplitimą vienu ar kitu laikotarpiu. Renesanso ir baroko stiliaus sietynų Lietuvoje išliko gerokai mažiau nei kaimyninėje Latvijoje. Išaiškinus dažniausius ir tipiškiausius Latvijos bronzinių sietynų dekoro elementus, daromos prielaidos apie Lietuvos interjeruose kabėjusias, bet neišlikusias apšvietimo priemones. The paper analyses, for the first time, the motifs of the décor of bronze chandeliers in Lithuania and Latvia from the 16th to 18th century. It uses the more abundant examples in Latvia to reconstruct the lost heritage of chandeliers in Lithuania and examines the variety, origin, and symbolism of the decorative motifs. Latvia, which shares a border with Lithuania, was chosen for the study because of the abundant heritage of bronze chandeliers from the 16th to 18th century and close political and economic trade relations between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Livonia. The study revealed two groups of décor elements: some of them came from the Gothic period and were still used during the Renaissance, while completely different motifs came into use when the promotion of the Classical Antiquity culture began in the 16th century. Based on the surviving examples in Poland, it can be stated that Mariological chandeliers may have still existed in Lithuania and Latvia in the Renaissance. Some of the most archaic zoomorphic motifs of a deer and a lion’s head were already used in the Gothic era. Not a few chandeliers containing the latter element have survived in Latvia; therefore, it is probable that they also existed in Lithuania. A dolphin frequently found in the décor of chandeliers from the 16th and 17th centuries was considered a symbol of Christ the Saviour in the art of early Christianity. Chandeliers with serpent arms that are relatively rare in Europe have survived in Lithuania. This polysemantic symbolism of décor has originated from the Netherlands. Lithuanian museums store four chandeliers with this décor from the 16th and 17th centuries. A large number of chandeliers with a double-headed eagle have survived in Lithuania and Latvia. They were widespread throughout Europe and could express sympathies for or dynastic, administrative relations with any empire. The abundant heritage of chandeliers with this motif in Christian sacral buildings also suggests a broader, i. e. sacral meaning of the double-headed eagle. During the Renaissance and later in the Baroque period, allegorical motifs of the Classical mythology started appearing in the décor of chandeliers. One of the most popular gods of ancient Rome was Jupiter. He was associated with the element of fire and Heavenly Light. Sirens were also a popular element of décor in chandeliers. In the 16th to 18th century, the tops of the chandeliers were sometimes decorated with sculptures of soldiers of various periods, which can be interpreted as symbolising the doers of justice and the maintainers of the Divine Order on earth. From the 16th to 18th century, the decorations of bronze chandeliers in Lithuania and Latvia included figurative décor elements and floral motifs that complemented the composition: shoots, buds or flower blossoms. The study revealed that the motifs used to decorate the tops of the chandeliers were not random but rather important elements with a symbolic meaning relevant for that period. These could be allegorical motifs of décor symbolising fire/Heavenly Light, motifs symbolising the Divine Order on earth or Divine Patronage, as well as heraldic décor elements denoting political relationships or sympathies. The objective of the paper is to present the current state of research on the silhouette and activity of Pedro Ruiz de Moros (Roysius), as well as on his work Decisiones Lituanicae, and put forward research postulates. The author presented in particular the results of research conducted by Tomasz Fijałkowski and Andrzej Kremer, and proposed directions in which these studies should be supplemented. One of the postulates is to take a closer look at Roysius as a Renaissance expert in Roman law. Another postulate is to conduct in-depth research into elements of Roman law in Decisiones, and then determine the influence of this work on judicial practice. Another area of research is the activity of Roysius in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, in particular his role in the work on the Second Statute of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the development of the Statutes of the Samogitian chapter. Next, the postulate of publishing Decisiones’ translation into Polish was presented, and difficulties and doubts related to the translation were indicated.

Žygimanto Augusto medalio perdirbinys, sujungęs portretinio averso kopiją su iš kabučio perdarytu reversu, straipsnyje interpretuojamas kaip karaliaus asmens ir valdžios komentaras. Pasitelkus vaizdinius ir rašytinius šaltinius, tyrime konstruojamas istorinis Giovanniui Giacomui Caragliui priskiriamo originalo ir jo perdirbinio kontekstas išskleidžiant dvipusio medalio potencialą apversti prasmes. This enquiry focuses on the portrait medal of King Sigismund Augustus attributed to the goldsmith Giovanni Giacomo Caraglio; the medal and its remake are kept in the Ashmolean Museum of the University of Oxford. The medal features in Caraglio’s portrait painted by Paris Bordone in 1553, and is therefore also dated to the same year. The obscure occasion for which the medal was cast prompts reconsidering the relation between its obverse and reverse. The obverse features the bust of the king in profile facing left, while the reverse depicts the figure of Faith encircled with the quote from Virgil’s Aeneid: “DVM SPIRITVS HOS REGET ARTVS” (“As long as the spirit directs these limbs”, IV, 336). Avigdor W.G. Posèq has convincingly argued that the left-facing orientation of the profile coincides with the direction towards the past and is often used when representing humanists, females, minors, and clergymen rather than kings and politicians who are responsible for shaping the future. What is the message behind the medal that depicts the king looking towards the past in combination with the personification of Faith and Aeneas’ promise to remember Dido? This essay argues that this combination acknowledges Sigismund Augustus’ acceptance of his royal duties and his resolution to remain faithful to the Catholic creed of his ancestors in the wake of the death of his beloved spouse Queen Barbara Radziwill (1523–1551). Although, due to Virgil’s authority and the privileged genre of medal art, this item has been regarded as high art, the association between the queens Barbara and Dido bore significant misogynist and erotic undertones. The latter have been exploited in the remake of the medal as its bronze aftercast was adjoined to a former pendant featuring Venus and Mars surprised by Vulcan and Olympian gods mocking them. Due to the identification of the hitherto obscured iconography of the reverse as well as the references to the Reposianus’ epyllion together with Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Ars Amatoria as its literary sources, this unique medallic remake comes across as a humorous gesture. The paper argues that the reverse being fixed to the obverse along the horizontal axis allowed the viewers to reveal the erotic reputation of the king and, by doing so, turn the image of Augustus (meaning, literally, “the elevated one”) head upside down. This way, by a mere twist of fingers, the contradictory combination of reverse and obverse of this medallic remake allowed the erudite and powerful onlookers to join the Olympian gods in their laughter.

Translatio imperii is a concept and political stereotype of transfer of metaphysical world domination from country to country. The concept of translatio imperii accounts for the belief of the Byzantine emperors in their exceptional right over emperorship as legal successors of the old Rome. After the fall of Constantinople (1453), the concept of translatio imperii gradually lost its universal character and was interpreted in the confines of a nation. In the epic poetry of the Renaissance, the theme of translatio imperii can manifest itself in describing the history of a concrete dynasty that is fighting with another dynasty, albeit within the borders of the same country. Francesco Filelfo (1398–1481) mused on the concept of translatio imperii in the epic poem Sphortias dedicated to Francesco Sforza, an Italian condottiero. At the end of the 15th century, a new legend appeared that claimed the Byzantine origin of the Monomach’s Cap. That, in turn, explains the religious and political idea of Moscow being the third Rome. Alternative theories emerged in the epic poetry of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The epic poem The Prussian War (Lat. Bellum Prutenum, 1516) by Ioannes Visliciensis depicts the events of the Great War with the Teutonic knights and the battle of Grunwald in 1410. The events became the symbol of political might of the Jagiellonian dynasty. The poem provided a literary formulation of the concept “Jagiellonian” patriotism for the first time. In his epic poem Radivilias (1592), Ioannes Radvanus incorporates the idea of translatio imperii when he shares a ‘Roman’ legend according to which the kings of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania trace their origin from patrician Palemon (Publius Palemo Libo) who founded the city of Nova Roma. The true successors of the Roman empire are patricians led by Palemon – the founders of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The artistic expression of both the “Jagiellonian” and Lithuanian (i.e., Grand Duchy of Lithuania) patriotism which incorporated the concept of translatio imperii had an enormous impact on the formation of the national identity of the Belarusian, Lithuanian, and Polish peoples.

Nuo Viduramžių sodas buvo neatsiejama Europos pilių, vienuolynų, didikų rezidencijų aplinkos dalis. Rašytiniuose šaltiniuose „karaliaus sodas“ Vilniaus pilyje minimas nuo XVI a. 4 dešimtmečio. Nors archeologiniai pilies teritorijos tyrimai neatskleidė tikslios sodų buvimo vietos, kultūriniame sluoksnyje aptikta reliktų, kuriuos galima priskirti Viduramžių pilies, renesansinių ir barokinių rūmų sodų paveldui. Straipsnyje pristatoma autentiška Vilniaus pilies sodų istoriją liudijanti medžiaga, supažindinama su renesansinio stiliaus sodo, skirto šios rezidencijos sodams atminti, projektiniais sprendimais. From medieval times, gardens were an indispensable component of castle, monastery and palace environment in Europe. The earliest remarks on royal gardens at the Vilnius Lower Castle date back to the 1530s. Long-term archaeological excavations of the site did not help to establish the precise location of these gardens. However, some artefacts were found in the cultural layers, which could be interpreted as garden elements belonging to the medieval castle, the renaissance and the baroque palaces. The authors of the article refer to authentic materials pertaining to the history of landscape management at the Vilnius castle site. These materials have been collected during the archaeological excavations conducted by the Lietuvos Pilys Castle Research Centre and are currently analyzed at the Scientific Research Centre at the National Museum the Palace of Grand Dukes of Lithuania. The garden history could be traced through the remnants of garden facilities: the fragments of medieval wattle dated to the late 14th century, pond reinforcements in front of the royal palace, which was under construction at that time, dated to 1510–1511, and wells in the area of the renaissance gardens dated to 1560–1562. Besides, several relics of the seventeenth-century baroque garden were uncovered in the presumed garden area: a masonry base of a garden statue or fountain, sized 2.6 x 2.12 m, a fragment of a sandstone vase, almost 1 m in diameter, and a segment of a cobbled road running along the hill’s retaining wall. The history of the use of ornamental plants is attested by fragments of flowerpots or Myrtaceae pollen found in the sixteenth-century cultural layers. The territorial distribution of the remnants of garden facilities indicates that the gardens were not localized in a single area but rather surrounded the royal residence. The article also presents a project of a renaissance-style garden adjacent to the reconstructed palace, designed to commemorate the historical royal gardens. The garden will consist of three main parts: a bosket separating the garden terrace, four box-edged lawns with a central fountain, and raised beds with ornamental plants and culinary herbs selected referring to sixteenth-century books. The garden construction is due for completion in 2018.

Armour or its details, that now get more and more attention from the researchers, are collected in funds of Lithuanian museums and there are quite a few of them. Also, as the time goes by, they are complemented with new archaeological findings that can provide new and very useful information to the explorations of Lithuanian war history. However, topic of armour in Lithuanian historiography is practically not examined and for that, even until now, we do not have armour types that are generally accepted and used in science, as well as their detailed Lithuanian names. Such situation not only complicates the work of a research, but also does not give a possibility to provide the results of the work clearly and in an understandable manner. That is why in this article, collaborating with the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language, names of armour details and their types during Middle Ages and Renaissance are provided, being made more Lithuanian and adjusted to Lithuanian language. Terms of armour and their details used in Lithuanian scientific literature are discussed and at the same time main problems of armour terminology in Europe are provided. Terminology offered in this publication should be complemented with the names of armour or its details as the time goes by because understandable and clear terminology of armour is essential when wanting to successfully continue research of Lithuanian war history and archaeology.

Karolingų renesansas – specifinė istorijos atkarpa, siejusi ir savitai transformavusi antikos ir viduramžių švietėjišką bei kultūros paveldą, naujai traktavusi mokyklos ir ugdančiojo mokymo idėją. Šiuo laikotarpiu, kai kultūra iš Britų salų kėlėsi į Frankų imperijos teritoriją, svarbų vaidmenį suvaidino Biskopo (Biscop), Bedos Garbingojo (Venerable) bei Alkuino (Alcuin) teorinis ir praktiškasis pedagoginis palikimas, pagrįstas mokyklų steigimu ir realaus pedagoginio proceso konstravimo sudėtingumu. Tai buvo naujas žvilgsnis į patį žmogų, pasaulio suvokimą ir žmogaus vietą kosmoso erdvėje. Straipsnyje išryškinama septynių laisvųjų menų svarba ugdant asmenybę, formuojant protingą ir dorovingą žmogų. Analizuojami kai kurių Palatine mokyklos vadovėlių turinio ypatumai, atskleidžiantys mokymo principus ir tikslus. Aptariami Karolingų renesanso kultūros ir mokyklos aspektai bei pagrindinės žmogaus lavinimo idėjos, besiremiančios sokratiškosios didaktikos metodu. Carolingian Renaissance is a very special period of consolidation and transformation of an ancient and medieval educational and cultural heritage, which re-interpreted the idea of school and developing teaching. During this period, when culture moved from the British Isles to the territory of the Frankish Empire, Biscop’s, the Venerable Bede’s and Alcuin’s theoretical practical pedagogic legacy, based on opening of schools and complexity of actual pedagogical process construction, played an important role. This was a new insight into a human being, perception of the world and place of the human being in the universe. The article emphasizes the importance of the seven liberal arts to the development of personality, a rational and moral person. Peculiarities of contents of certain textbooks of Palatine School are analyzed, which reveal the principles and objectives of teaching. Aspects of the Carolingian Renaissance culture and school are discussed as well as the main ideas of educating people, built upon the Socratic method of didactics.

Straipsnis – bandymas apžvelgti turtingą Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės retorikos tradiciją: nusakyti jos vietą europiniame kontekste, išryškinti tradicijos ir naujovių santykį, parodyti, kaip retorikos mokslas veikė individualią kūrybą, atskleisti, kokie netikėtumai laukia sklaidant rankraščius. Tyrimui pasitelkta rankraštinė medžiaga, kurios likę daug ir kuri bibliotekų ir archyvų tamsoje vis dar laukia savo tyrėjų, kad būtų prakalbinta ir perduota šių dienų žmogui. LDK retorikai didžiausią įtaką darė XV–XVI a. atsiradę retorikos mokslo veikalai, kuriuose dažniausiai referuotos Antikos žinios, tačiau pateiktos ir gyvenamojo laiko įžvalgos. Labiausiai nusipelnę XVII a. LDK poetikos ir retorikos mokslui yra jėzuitai. Lietuvos jėzuitų kolegijose teorinį retorikos pagrindą sudarė renesansiška dėstymo tradicija. XVII a. pastebima tendencija įtraukti į paskaitas literatūros kūriniuose atsiradusias naujoves, aptarti specifines retorikos mokslo problemas. Norą išsamiai aptarti Baroko epochoje atsiradusias temas liudija Vilniaus universiteto profesorių – Žygimanto Liauksmino (1597–1670) ir Kazimiero Kojalavičiaus (1617–1674) – retorikos teorijai skirti darbai, sulaukę populiarumo Europoje. Rankraštinį LDK poetikos ir retorikos palikimą išskiria dvi pagrindinės tendencijos. Viena jų susijusi su teoriniu šių disciplinų aiškinimu – tai noras dėstomas taisykles pagrįsti vietinių, t. y. LDK autorių veikaluose išsakytomis mintimis. Kita tendencija susijusi su retorikos praktika. Paskaitose buvo įprasta visus teorinius teiginius iliustruoti atitinkamu poezijos ar prozos pavyzdžiu.

Po Smolensko praradimo 1514 m. vasarą, tų pačių metų rudenį buvo pasiekta svarbi pergalė prieš Maskvos kariuomenę prie Oršos. Karinės strateginės Oršos mūšio pasekmės bei teritoriniai laimėjimai atkovojant, kas prarasta, pasirodė nedideli, tačiau reikšmingi buvo pergalės padariniai tarptautiniams santykiams. Tai lėmė diplomatija ir propaganda – Europoje efektyviai buvo paskleista žinia apie pergalingą mūšį prieš stačiatikius maskvėnus. Svarbūs čia buvo proginiai poezijos kūriniai, kiti tekstai, formavę viešąjį naratyvą apie valdovo Žygimanto laimėtą mūšį. Siekiant atsakyti į klausimą, kokią vietą tokiuose šaltiniuose užima Lietuvos, lietuvių karvedžių, karių ir kitų Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės realijų paminėjimas, straipsnyje atidžiau pažvelgiama į proginius poezijos kūrinius, rašytus netrukus ir kiek vėliau po pergalės. Šalia Jokūbo Pizono eilėraščių šiuo aspektu aptariamas ir tuomet publikuotas jo laiškas. After the loss of Smolensk in summer of 1514, in autumn of the same year an important victory was achieved against the troops of Muscovy at Orsha. Military strategic implications of the Battle of Orsha and territorial achievements were small in comparison with more important consequences on the international plane. It was a result of diplomacy and propaganda: the news about the victory against the Orthodox Muscovites have been effectively disseminated in Europe. Occasional poetic works played important role in this process. Subsequently, most of them were included into the collection Carmina de memorabili cede Scismaticorum Moscouiorum published in Rome in 1515. In order to answer the question of how often Lithuania, Vilnius and Lithuanians are mentioned in such literary sources and also what kind of relevance these references present, occasional poetry written shortly after victory by such authors as Andreas Cricius (Pol. Andrzej Krzycki), Jacobus Piso (Hung. Jakab Piso) (including one letter written by him), Joannes Dantiscus (Pol. Jan Dantyszek), and others are analysed thoroughly in the article.

Šiame studijinio pobūdžio straipsnyje analizuojami poeto Sigito Gedos atlikti Williamo Shakespeare’o sonetų vertimai į lietuvių kalbą (Vilnius: Žara, 2009). Atskleidžiama vertimų ir sekimų svarba formuojantis itališkajai bei angliškajai sonetų struktūrai; pateikiama trumpa Shakespeare’o sonetų vertimų į lietuvių kalbą ir jų tyrimų apžvalga; supažindinama su šiuolaikinėmis teorinėmis poetinio vertimo nuostatomis, liečiančiomis vertimo adekvatumo, ekvivalentiškumo, kultūrinių realijų perteikimo klausimus (James S. Holmes, Francis R. Jones, Raymond van den Broeck, Theodore Horace Savory); aptariamos bendrosios kalbinės, kultūrinės Shakespeare’o sonetų vertimo į lietuvių kalbą problemos. Taikant lyginamąjį ir atidžiojo skaitymo metodus, detaliai analizuojami šeši Gedos išversti sonetai, didesnį dėmesį skiriant originalo poetinės sintaksės ir semantikos figūrų perkėlimui (18, 73, 116 sonetai), prasmės atskleidimui ir jos transformacijoms vertimuose (27, 66, 13 sonetai). Naudojamasi moksliniu angliškuoju sonetų leidimu (redaktorė Katherine Duncan-Jones, 2012), užsienio autorių atliktais Shakespeare’o sonetų ir jų vertimų tyrimais (Manfred Pfister, Niveen Aziz Muhammed Tinah, Douglas Trevor, Lukas Erne, Catherine Belsey, Paul Edmondson, Stanley Wells, Zacharij Plavskin, Michail Morozov, Aleksandr Anikst). Epizodiniam lyginimui pasitelkiami Samuilo Maršako vertimai, turėję nemenkos įtakos Gedos vertimams, taip pat ir kiti rusiškieji bei lietuviškieji (Aleksio Churgino, Alfonso Tyruolio-Šešplaukio, Tautvydos Marcinkevičiūtės, Antano Danieliaus) vertimai. Daroma išvada, kad Gedos versti sonetai išlaiko originalaus teksto struktūrą, sintaksinį ir semantinį branduolį – išplėstinę metaforą ir antitezę, tačiau patiria nemenkų poetikos bei prasmės nuostolių ir nepasiekia vertėjo poetinio talento lygmens. The article examines the translation of William Shakespeare’s sonnets into Lithuanian by the poet Sigitas Geda (Vilnius: Žara, 2009). The authors discuss the importance of translations and interpreting via a third language for the formation of Italian and English sonnet structure; provide a short overview on Lithuanian translations of Shakespeare’s sonnets and their research; present some modern theoretical principles of poetry translation including translation adequacy, equivalence and cultural transfers (James S. Holmes, Francis R. Jones, Raymond van den Broeck, Theodore Horace Savory); examine general linguistic and cultural issues of Lithuanian translations of Shakespeare’s sonnets. A detailed analysis of the translation of six sonnets by Geda is done applying comparative and close reading methods. The article focuses on the transfer of figures of speech (sonnets 18, 73 and 116) and the deciphering and transformation of meaning (sonnets 27, 66 and 13). The resources include the edition of Shakespeare’s sonnets with commentaries (ed. Katherine Duncan Jones), the research of sonnets and their translations carried out by foreign authors (Manfred Pfister, Niveen Aziz Muhammed Tinah, Douglas Trevor, Lukas Erne, Catherine Belsey, Paul Edmondson, Stanley Wells, Zacharij Plavskin, Michail Morozov, Aleksandr Anikst). Occasionally, comparisons are made with translation by Samuil Marshak that had a greatly influence on Geda and with other variant translations of Russian and Lithuanian authors (Aleksys Churginas, Alfonsas Tyruolis-Šešplaukis, Tautvyda Marcinkevičiūtė, Antanas Danielius). In conclusion, sonnets translation by Geda preserves the text structure of the original, its syntactic and semantic nexus – extended metaphor and antithesis; however, it results in a great loss of poetic and semantic features and does not reveal the poetic talent of the translator.

During the sixteenth century Virgil's poetry had a noticeable and increasingly strong influence on literature written in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. This can be attributed to the fact that the Aeneid enabled Polish and Lithuanian to construct a reflection on early modem national identity. The author attempts here to examine this hypothesis and to answer the question: how did Virgilian identity-topoi work in poems written in Poland and Lithuania in the sixteenth century? To do that he focuses on eight epic poems published in Polish and Latin between 1516 and 1592. In the main part of the paper several topics used in these poems are examined. These are: Lithuania's location in Europe and its geography, Lithuanian history, the inhabitants' sense of identity and the definition of homeland. Read together, these passages evoke a coherent image of the sixteenth-century Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In the conclusions the author argues that the Aeneid provided Polish and Lithuanian poets with a language they could use for creating and expressing Lithuanian identity. This can be observed especially in a historical narrative which is based on four Virgilian motifs: the ethnogenetic myth, the legendary foundation of the capital city, the legendary victory and the tale of a contemporary hero who links this ancient history to a poet's present time. The author stresses the fact that the process of constructing knowledge about Lithuania was triggered by the humanistic ways of reading Virgil's texts and the sixteenth-century imitative procedures.

The article evaluates the role of the epopee genre in the literary process of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania during the Renaissance and early Baroque periods. Epopee was considered the genre par excellence in Classical poetry. In the Renaissance this genre developed mostly in Latin, and not in national languages. The genre started with the historical-dynastic epos Bellum Prutenum by loannes Visliciensis. Meanwhile, the traditions of elegiac, hagiographical and panegyric poetry, as well as the роеm hodoeporicon, continued. Л new humanistic understanding of the idea of herois perfecti (perfect hero) was formed in the literature of the region as well as in the creative work of the poets belonging to the 'German cultural space'. From the middle of the sixteenth century the role of Latin diminished in the heroic epic genre in the literature of the Polish Crown while in that of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Latin preserved its dominant position. The special place enjoyed by epic poetry in Latin in the literature of Central and Eastern European countries gave rise to a tendency to epicise poetic narration, which, in turn, influenced the formation of the poetic manner of the most prominent poets of the nineteenth century.

Straipsnio tikslas yra supažindinti skaitytojus su beveik nežinomu kitais atžvilgiais puikiai pažįstamo rašytojo, pirmosios spausdintos Lietuvos istorijos (1582) autoriaus – Motiejaus Strijkovskio – kūriniu. 1575 metais jis išleido lenkų kalba trylikaskiemenėmis eilutėmis parašytą poemą, trumpai vadinamą Apie Lenkijos Karalystės ir Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės laisvę. Iš pirmo žvilgsnio ši knyga atrodo daugmaž tipiškas daugiažanrės XVI–XVIII amžių Europos literatūros apie sudėtingus krikščioniškojo pasaulio santykius su Osmanų imperija – vadinamųjų „turcikų“ – pavyzdys. Kaip tikras Renesanso žmogus, autorius akivaizdžiai didžiuojasi savo žiniomis, įgytomis iš asmeninės patirties: kai knyga buvo spausdinama, jis buvo ką tik grįžęs iš Stambulo, kuriame lankėsi kaip Lenkijos diplomatinės pasiuntinybės narys. Strijkovskis, buvęs karys ir žvalgas, ne tik kviečia visus krikščionis suvienyti jėgas prieš turkų grėsmę, bet ir siūlo labai pragmatišką bei detalią karinių veiksmų programą. Kiekviena proga jis ragina lenkų ir lietuvių bajoriją ruoštis neišvengiamam karui su Osmanais ir drąsina juos ginti garsiąją savo laisvę, kaip didžiausią privilegiją pasaulyje. Kita vertus, keliose kūrinio vietose jis kone šlovina turkų drausmę, santūrumą, lygias visų teises (taip atspindėdamas to meto krikščioniškajai Europai būdingą ambivalentišką požiūrį į Osmanų imperiją) ir leidžia suprasti, kad turkų užimtų šalių kilmingieji bei aukštoji dvasininkija pelnytai kenčia už ankstesnį savo pasipūtimą ir savanaudiškumą. Šiuo atžvilgiu aptariamąją Strijkovskio poemą galima lyginti su iškilių XVI amžiaus Lietuvos mąstytojų Mykolo Lietuvio ir Andriejaus Volano politiniais ir sociologiniais veikalais. Article aims to introduce the reader with an almost unknown work by otherwise very wellknown writer, the author of the first printed history of Lithuania (1582), Maciej Stryjkowski. In 1575 he published a poem, written in Polish thirteensyllable verses, untitled (in short) About the liberty of the Kingdom of Poland and the Great Duchy of Lithuania. At first glance, this book is a rather typical example of 16th–18th century European literature of many different genres (the so-called Turcica), dealing with complex relationship between the Christian world and the Ottoman Empire. As a true Renaissance man, the author is obviously very proud of his knowledge gained from personal experience: at the time the book was published, he had recently returned from Stambul, which he had visited as a member of Polish diplomatic mission. Being an ex-soldier and scout, Stryjkowski not only calls all Christians to join their forces against the Turkish threat, but also suggests a very pragmatic and explicit military action program. At every opportunity, he admonishes Polish and Lithuanian nobility to prepare themselves for an inevitable war with the Ottomans and encourages them to defend their famous liberty, as a greatest privilege in the world. On the other hand, in several places of his work he almost glorifies Turkish discipline, moderation, equality of rights (thus reflecting an ambivalent attitude to Ottoman Empire, characteristic for Christian Europe of that time), and alludes that the noblemen and the upper clergy of the countries occupied by Turks, actually deserve their suffering for their previous arrogance and selfishness. For that matter, the discussed poem by Stryjkowski may be compared to political and sociological works by prominent Lithuanian thinkers of 16th century Michalo Lituanus and Andreas Volanus.

Lietuvos Didžiojoje Kunigaikštystėje italų menininkai dirbo nuo XVI a. pradžios, juos globojo didysis kunigaikštis Žygimantas Senasis. Jo ir sūnaus Žygimanto Augusto fundacijų dėka Vilnius tapo svarbiu Florencijos-Romos renesanso centru. Pradžioje menininkai atvykdavo į Lietuvą per Krokuvą. XVII a. pradžioje, keičiantis meno suvokimo situacijai Lenkijoje, svarbiais kultūriniais centrais tapo Liublinas, vėliau – Varšuva. Tuo laikotarpiu menininkai į Lietuvą dažniausiai atvykdavo iš Italijos-Šveicarijos pasienio regiono. XVII a. dauguma jų darbų priklausė avangardui ir šiuo požiūriu lenkų menininkai dažniausiai nesekė. Italų menininkų kūryba buvo labai reikšminga Lietuvos-Vilniaus vėlyvojo baroko ir klasicizmo judėjimams. Italian artists have been working on the territory of Grand Duke of Lithuania since the beginning of the 16th century, which is associated with patronage of Sigismund the Old. Thanks to him and to the foundations of his follower Sigismund Augustus, Vilnius became an important centre of Florentine-Roman Renaissance. At first artists were coming to Lithuania through Cracow. Lublin and later Warsaw were important centres at the turn of the 17th century together with the changing artistic situation in Poland. In those days artists, who came to Lithuania, were mostly from Italian-Swiss border. In the 17th century much of their work fit into avant-garde artistic undertakings and from this point of view often Polish art did not follow suit. Italian artists' activity is also very important for Lithuanian-Vilnius movements of late Baroque and Classicism.

Straipsnyje siekiama apžvelgti pagrindines orderių teorijas nuo Antikos laikų iki XIX a., gilinantis į jų dvasinę esmę, sakralizuotus klasikinio orderio kilmės aiškinimus. Seniausias žinomas veikalas, kuriame išdėstytos architektūros taisyklės, – Vitruvijaus traktatas „Dešimt knygų apie architektūrą“, išleistas I a. pr. Kr. Autorius mėgino apibendrinti graikų architektūrą, nors pats gyveno daugiau kaip dviem šimtmečiams praėjus po klasikinio jų periodo (V-III a. pr. Kr.). Vitruvijus nurodo, kokius orderius dera naudoti įvairių dievų šventykloms. Minervos, Marso, Heraklio šventyklos statomos dorėninės: šių dievų narsumas reikalauja pastatų be puošybos. Veneros, Floros, Prozerpinos ar nimfų šventykloms tinkamiausias būtų korintinis orderis, nes tos dievybės tokios švelnios, jog ir architektūrai dera taikyti lieknas formas, spalvingai papuoštas lapais ir užraitomis. O Junonai, Dianai ir panašioms dievybėms skirtas šventyklas reikėtų statyti pagal jonėninį orderį, kurio šventyklos įsiterptų tarp griežtų dorėninių ir švelnių korintinių pastatų. Klasikinio orderio kilmės teorijas krikščioniškąja kryptimi plėtojo XVI a. Renesanso teoretikas Sebastianas Serlio (1475-1555). Knygose apie architektūrą jis siūlė kitaip naudoti skirtingus orderius ir rekomendavo dorėninį orderį taikyti bažnyčioms, skirtoms Šv. Petrui, Šv. Pauliui, Šv. Jurgiui ar kitiems šventiesiems, kurie turėjo tvirtybės ir jėgos aukoti gyvenimą Kristaus tikėjimui. Serlio sukurta orderių sakralizacija buvo naujas būdas dvasingumui išreikšti. Tai – perėjimas į simbolinę krikščionių šventųjų semantiką. XVI a. italų Renesanso architektų teorinius ieškojimus užbaigė Palladio sekėjas Vincenzo Scamozzi (1552-1616), 1615 m. Venecijoje išleidęs didžiulį traktatą „Apie visuotinės architektūros idėją“. Scamozzi suteikė klasikinei formai dvasinę prasmę, teigdamas, jog orderis architektūroje – tai tos pačios visuotinės Dievo sukurtos tvarkos dalis. Renesanso teoretikų dieviškos kilmės teorijos suformulavo naują požiūrį į orderį kaip į dvasios reiškinį. XVI a. architektūros teorijos darbų pasirodė ir kitose šalyse. 1550 m. Ciuriche išėjo architekto ir medžio raižytojo Hanso Blumo knyga „V Columnae, arba penkių orderių aprašymas ir pritaikymas“. Toskaninės kolonos proporcijas jis lygino su storu valstiečiu ir netgi vadino ją valstietiška. Tai buvo akivaizdus orderio desakralizavimas, atkreipus dėmesį į žemesnį socialinį sluoksnį. XVII a. architektūrinės teorinės minties centras persikėlė į Prancūziją. Po Philibert‘o De L’Orme (1510?-1570) dar 1568 m. sukurto „Pirmojo tomo apie architektūrą“ iškilo naujų talentų. Vienas ryškiausių buvo Roland‘as Frėart‘as de Chambrai (1606-1676), pasižymėjęs kaip vienas pirmųjų helenizmo apologetų, neigusių visa, kas neatitiko antikinės Graikijos formų ir estetinių idealų. XVIII a. orderių sakrališkos simbolikos problema jau nebuvo tokia populiari kaip anksčiau. Teoretikai labiau diskutavo, ar orderis kilęs iš panašumo į žmogaus kūną, ar išsirutuliojo iš medinių konstrukcijų. XVIII-XIX a. archeologų atradimai, tiksliųjų mokslų pasiekimai, pagaliau šviečiamoji filosofija skatino architektūros teoretikus būti tikslesnius, tačiau tai, kas buvo sukurta nuo Vitruvijaus laikų iki klasicizmo, nebuvo pamiršta. Orderių dieviškos kilmės teorijos neaplenkė ir Lietuvos. Jos atėjo su kitų šalių teoretikų darbais, kurie buvo studijuojami ir padėjo formuoti menininkų pažiūras. Vilniaus universiteto architektūros teoretikų darbai akivaizdžiai atskleidžia, kaip sakrališkosios orderio teorijos, perėjusios antropomorfinį etapą, susitelkė ties organine architektūros kilme.

In 2012 the LAM Department Lithuanian Museums’ Centre for Information, Digitisation and LIMIS started to develop audio guide text for Lithuanian Clock Museum. It contains 30 selected most valuable clocks on display at the museum, which reflect the mechanism development history and represent different artistic styles. This article, prepared according to the audio guide mentioned, aims to present a detailed presentation of the exhibits selected for the audio guide and to highlight their uniqueness. Throughout history humans tried to answer the question what is time. Developed civilizations tried to know, learn to count and master time since the very old days. Visiting Lithuanian Clock Museum exposition reassures that it is not so simple to count time and that various nations understood it differently. Moreover, the visitors can find out that common time counting system that we know today was created only in the 19th century. The exposition of the Clock Museum provides the visitors with an opportunity to see more than 400 original and rare clocks and to see a clockmaker’s workshop during the Renaissance. The exposition consists of two parts. The first floor presents time counting principles and the development of clock construction from the ancient times until today. The visitors are introduced to calendars, ancient sun, water, fire, sand, mechanical and other clocks. The second floor introduces the changes in the form and design of mechanic clocks from 16th to 20th century. The exposition displays the works of the famous European and Lithuanian clock makers – Theodor Tarasovig, Abraham-Louis Breguet, Theodore Perret and others. The remaining part of the 19th century park near the building of the museum was turned into a courtyard with working sundials. After taking a look at the exposition of the clocks, the visitors are invited to take a walk in the Sundial Park. [...]

Straipsnyje analizuojami trys Pranciškaus Akvaviviečio (Franciscus de Comitibus Aquae Vivae) vardu rašyti laiškai (apie 1429 m.), esantys Lietuvos didžiojo kunigaikščio Vytauto epistoliniame kodekse. Vienas jų – rašytas Vytautui, o kiti du skirti aiškiau neidentifikuotiems asmenims. Tyrimas parodė, kad nemaža Lietuvos valdovui skirto laiško dalis yra žodis žodin „nusirašyta“ nuo garsaus italų humanisto, politikos veikėjo Kolucijaus Salutati (Coluccio Salutati) laiško, kuris buvo rašytas 1390 m. Paduvos valdytojui Pranciškui Karariečiui (Francesco Novello da Carrara). Pranciškus Akvavivietis perima Salutati laiško idėją, esmines struktūrines dalis, pavyzdžius, realijas ir kūrybiškai pritaiko Vytauto asmeniui bei konkrečiai situacijai, pridėdamas ir savų pavyzdžių, minčių, pareikšdamas savą poziciją. Pasitelkus platesnį istorinį, kultūrinį kontekstą, pirmuose straipsnio skyriuose aiškinamasi laiškų parašymo intencijos, tikslai, keliamos hipotezės, susijusios su laiškų autentiškumu, adresanto identitetu, jo siekiais, galimais užsakovais ar inspiratoriais ir kt. Aptariama Lietuvos didžiojo kunigaikščio dvaro ir kanceliarijos kultūrinė aplinka, nuo Antikos laikų gyvavusios tradicijos: rašyti fiktyvius laiškus; pamokyti, pagirti ar kaip nors paveikti valdovą, skiriant jam įvairaus pobūdžio veikalus. Tolesniuose skyriuose analizuojamas šių epistolinių tekstų turinys, kompozicija, realijos, literatūrinė raiška, siekiama pateikti kuo daugiau informacijos apie galimą, iki šiol aiškiai neidentifikuotą, autorių. Be to, aptariamas laiško autoriaus pateiktas Lietuvos didžiojo kunigaikščio portretas, jo asmens, veiklos ir poelgių vertinimas. Article deals with the three letters written on the behalf of an Italian Franciscus de Comitibus Aquae Vivae (ca. 1429) that survived in the epistolary codex of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Vytautas. One of them, the very longest one, was written to Vytautas, and it attempts to dissuade Vytautas from aspirations of coronation, whiles the other two were addressed to not clearly identified magnates. The research revealed that a big part of the letter addressed to the Grand Duke was copied word by word from the letter of the well-known Italian humanist and political character Coluccio Salutati that was written in 1390 to a governor of Padova Francesco Novello da Carrara. Franciscus de Comitibus Aquae Vivae took over the idea of the Salutati’s letter, essential structural parts, examples, realities, and creatively applies all that to the person of Vytautas and his contemporary situation, also, by adding his own examples, thoughts, expressing his own position. With a broader historical, cultural context attached, the first chapters of the article deal with intentions of writing the letters, aims, raise hypotheses linked to the authenticity of the letters, identity of author, his aspirations, possible customers or moving spirits etc. Here are discussed cultural surroundings of a court and chancery of the Grand Duke of Lithuania, and traditions alive from the Antiquity: to write fictitious letters, to commend or somehow affect a ruler by bestowing on him works of various formats. In the further chapters contents of these epistolary texts, a composition, realities, and literary expression are being analyzed; it is sought to present to the best of ability more information on a possible until now clearly unidentified author. Beyond this, it is discussed a portrait of the Grand Duke of Lithuania being created by an author of the letter addressed to Vytautas, evaluation of his person, activity and actions. The letter to Vytautas is interesting not only by its content, structure, style, literary expression, illustrating assimilation of the Medieval and Renaissance kinds of epistles and rhetoric, but, also, shows how, for the creation of epistolary text, an idea, structure of letter of the other author is used, how it is imitated, keen-wittedly recreated. Analysis of this letter reveals how letters of well-known humanists spread, how creative and ideologically they were used for “teaching” a ruler not only of own, but, also, of a foreign country and culture; the letter to Vytautas reflects the extent in what spread of ideas and canons of epistolography alike was happening. The letters of Franciscus testify for the actuality of the contemporary epistolary genre and its significant place in political and, undoubtedly, cultural communication.

Renesanso ir baroko laikais buvo įprasta trijų šventųjų kalbų (hebrajų, graikų ir lotynų) samprata. Drauge buvo sakralizuoti ir jų rašmenys. Straipsnyje aptariami šventųjų raidynų ir kalbų (pirmiausia – graikų ir lotynų) statuso ir likimo LDK bruožai. Vietinės kalbos, vartodamos šiuos raidynus (lietuvių ir lenkų – lotyniškąjį; rusėnų – sukurtą graikiškojo pagrindu), aktualizuodavo ir juos lydinčias vertybių sistemas. Sakraliosios kalbos LDK gyvenime pynėsi su kasdienėmis, kasdienės ėmė savo orumą iš tikro ar tariamo ryšio su sakraliosiomis, galiausiai ir vienas, ir kitas perteikiantys raidynai keitėsi vietomis; natūrali dinamika galiausiai baigėsi lotyniškojo alfabeto, kaip visą valstybę apimančio komunikacijos įrankio ir europinio tapatumo ženklo, įsigalėjimu.

Straipsnyje siekiama išnagrinėti XVI a. – XVII a. I trečdalio Vilniaus miesto pastatų sienų tapybos paveldą kaip lokalinį vienos epochos, tipo ir meninio stiliaus fenomeną. Vilniaus renesansinė polichrominė tapyba ir sgrafitai išliko fragmentiškai, negausiai ir buvo atrasti skirtingu metu, visai atsitiktinai. Šis paveldas neužfiksuotas rašytiniuose šaltiniuose, nedatuotas ir beveik netyrinėtas, todėl iki šiol nebuvo interpretuojamas kaip visuminis reiškinys. Straipsnyje jis nagrinėjamas ornamento istorijos ir ikonografijos aspektais. Lietuvoje dar neįprasta mūsų XVI a. – XVII a. I trečdalio dailės objektus priskirti Šiaurės renesansui. Lyginant Vilniaus namų sienų dekorą su tuo pačiu metu Europoje plitusiais raižiniais, atsiskleidė Šiaurės renesanso dailės ypatumai: būdingų ornamentinių sistemų ir pavyzdžių kartotės, vienalaikis skirtingų laikotarpių itališkojo renesanso elementų plitimas, renesansinių elementų jungtys su vėlyvosios gotikos ir manierizmo dekoro motyvais. The aim of this article is to generalize wall painting in Vilnius city from the 16th century till the 3rd decade of the 17th century as a phenomenon interrelated by the same epoch, place, type of art, and artistic style. The Renaissance polychromic painting and sgraffito have hardly ever been researched and interpreted from such perspective because the remnants are scarce and patchy and because they had been uncovered on multiple occasions and completely perchance. This heritage has not been documented in written sources, nor has it been used; therefore, so far it can only be analyzed in terms of artistic style, ornamentation, and iconography. After comparing this object with the samples of ornamental graphics that at that time were spreading in other European cities, it is argued in this paper that pieces of art from Vilnius of the 16th century to the first half of the 17th century have typical features of the Northern Renaissance. It is still uncommon in Lithuania to attribute objects from this epoch to the Northern Renaissance. The Renaissance and Mannerist art heritage is still (mainly out of habit) being assessed according to the Italian artistic criteria. There have been long-lasting doubts about whether Renaissance art had ever been part of Vilnius citizens’ surroundings. However, having summed up all the known fragments of polychromic painting and sgraffito, it appears that this part of heritage was rather diverse and valuable. The fragments of Vilnius Renaissance ornamental wall painting represent the most characteristic inter-European peculiarities and development stages of the style. In Bernardin Church, the samples from Albrecht Dürer’s epoch, the transitional period from the late Gothic to Renaissance (first quarter of the 16th century), can be found. Paintings from the mid or late 16th century have remained at 13 Rūdininkai Street, and paintings of the transitional period from the Renaissance to Baroque (1600–1630) at Hozijus house. The ornamentation of the Mannerist style was used at the Holy Spirit’s Dominincan Monastery and in sgraffito of several buildings in Vilnius. Therefore, manifestations of the Renaissance epoch are imprinted in the wall paintings of Vilnius in a rather versatile fashion. Diversity and eclecticity are characteristic of the Northern Renaissance: it is an integral combination of elements from various different Renaissance periods, a junction of Renaissance elements and late Gothic or Mannerist motifs. From this perspective, one can argue that the Vilnius Renaissance heritage is a typical sample of the Northern Renaissance. It is so far uncertain in what ways the samples of Renaissance ornamentation would find themselves in Vilnius. However, if our Renaissance heritage is characteristic of Central European cities, one can predict that the samples had also been reaching our city in ordinary ways that have been researched scrupulously by foreign art critics. Illustrations from “Column Books” or other press, title pages, plates of ornamental carvings could have served as prototypes for the Renaissance wall paintings. A perspective for further research of this question is unfolding. The remaining wall painting ornamentation may help in correcting the dates of construction, reconstruction and renovation of some of Vilnius architectural objects. It would be careless to make further conclusions about the Renaissance ornamentation in Vilnius city, because the mentioned painting findings are absolutely random and do not entirely reveal how much and what kind of painting was present in Vilnius city in the 16th–17th century.

Valdovo laiškas – sudėtingas, gana tradicinis darinys, kurio struktūrą, turinį, stilių, literatūrinę raišką veikė atitinkamos epochos pokyčiai – mentaliniai, socialiniai, politiniai, kultūriniai ir kt. Visuomenės lūžiai, skirtingų kultūrų sankirtos, naujos visuomenės formavimasis – gera proga stebėti ir tirti tradicijos ir atsirandančių naujovių santykį. Kiekviena epocha turėjo savitą epistolinį kanoną, kurio pagrindą sudarė ne vieną šimtmetį trunkanti laiškų rašymo tradicija ir jos modifikacijos. Straipsnyje analizuojamas XIV–XVI a. Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės (LDK) valdovų korespondencijos pobūdis, kanoninis jų laiškų modelis, jį formavusi bendraeuropinė epistolikos tradicija, išryškinami atsiradę žanriniai, kultūriniai, mentaliniai ir kiti pokyčiai. Straipsnyje aptariama valdovų laiškų – kaip dalykinės, diplomatinės korespondencijos pavyzdžio – struktūra, tematika, kreipiniai, stilius, leksika, luominės etikos reikalavimai, laiško rengimo kontekstas, tipologizacijos, tikrosios autorystės klausimai. Tyrimo pagrindą sudaro lotyniška Lietuvos didžiųjų kunigaikščių: Gedimino, Vytauto, Aleksandro, Žygimanto Senojo, Žygimanto Augusto – korespondencija, lyginama su kai kurių jų amžininkų Europos valdovų laiškais. Letter of a ruler is a complicated quite traditional formation, which in terms of structure, content, style, and literary expression was affected by epochal changes – mental, social, political, cultural, etc. The article analyses a character of correspondence of rulers of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries, also, a canonical model of their letters, adapted pan European tradition of Latin epistolic that formed the model; the genre, cultural, mental, and other changes are emphasized. The article discusses the rulers’ letters as an example of objective, diplomatic correspondence, their structure, themes, address, lexis, requirements of class ethics (all these are traditional, enduring elements of ruler’s epistles), style (the most volatile element), a context of preparing a letter; there are discussed questions of typologisation, real authorship and other problems of a common nature of research of the GDL epistles. The Latin correspondence of grand dukes of Lithuania (Gediminas, Vytautas, Alexander, Sigismundus the Old, Sigismundus Augustus) makes the basis of research; for comparison letters of some contemporary European rulers are included. Correspondence of rulers of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania is a relevant component of an enduring miscellaneous political, cultural process. It reflects ruler’s life, self-expression of his personality, his education, and political, cultural connections, nature of ruling. Magnates and noblemen eventually absorbed a model of rulers’ epistles, traditions of communication, thus, it was a certain exemplum, which formed and granted a continuity of traditions of matter-of-fact communication via correspondence in the lower strata of society.

Nagrinėjama architektūros istorijos problema, susijusi su pilių rūmų evoliucija dabartinėje Lietuvos teritorijoje Lietuvos renesanso laikotarpiu. Remtasi darbo tematikai artima mokslinių publikacijų medžiaga ir kita literatūra, archyviniais dokumentais. Teoriniu lygmeniu apžvelgiant pilių rūmų priešistorę, ištyrus jų atsiradimo sąlygas, atskleidžiamos esminės pilių rūmų raidos tendencijos renesanso laikotarpiu dabartinėje Lietuvos teritorijoje. XVI amžiaus pradžioje italų, flamandų, Flandrijos renesansui pasiekus Lietuvą ir susiliejus su vietos lietuviškomis tradicijomis, lietuviškojo renesanso laikotarpiu pilių rūmai Lietuvoje pasiekė klestėjimo laikotarpį. Pilių rūmai pasižymėjo konstrukcijų, architektūros formų įvairumu, palyginti tikslinga funkcijos ir meninės išraiškos sąsaja, darnia jungtimi su aplinkos komponentais. Article author examines the problem of architecture history associated with the evolution of castle palaces in the current territory of Lithuania in the Lithuanian Renaissance period. The article is based on research papers thematically close to the publication, other literature and archive documents. After prehistory review of castle palaces at a theoretical level and clarifying the conditions for their occurrence, significant development trends of castle palaces during the Renaissance period in current Lithuania territory is revealed. At the beginning of the sixteenth century, Italian, Flemish and Flanders Renaissance reached Lithuania and merged with the local tradition; in the light of the Lithuanian Renaissance castle palaces reached their prosperity period in Lithuania. Castle palaces were distinguished by the diversity of their structural and architectural forms, relatively meaningful connection between function and artistic expression and a sustainable link with the components of environment.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjami iki 1705 m. išleisti Mažosios Lietuvos giesmynai, pradedant 1566-1570 m. laikotarpiu išėjusiomis Martyno Mažvydo „Gesmėmis Chriksczoniskomis", kurios yra pirmasis atskira publikacija išleistas lietuviškas giesmynas. Straipsnio autorius siūlo išskirti renesansinį ir barokinį ciklus. Renesansiniam ciklui būdinga tai, kad naujausios giesmės sukurtos XVI a. Šį ciklą pradėjo minėtosios „Gesmes Chriksczoniskos", toliau pratęsė Jono Bretkūno 1589 m. „Giesmes Duchaunas" ir užbaigė Lozoriaus Zengštoko 1612 m. „Giesmes Chriksczionischkos ir Duchaunischkos". Renesansinio ciklo lietuviški tekstai yra neaukšto, kartais netgi prasto poetinio lygio. Barokiniame cikle senesniųjų publikacijų paveldas praturtinamas giesmėmis, sukurtomis XVII a. laikantis barokinės poezijos principų. Barokinį ciklą pradėjo Danieliaus Kleino 1666 m. „Naujos Giesmju knygos", toliau pratęsė 1685 ir 1705 m. išėję papildyti jų leidimai – vadinamieji Jono Rikovijaus ir Frydricho Zigmanto Šusterio giesmynai. Didžioji dalis naujų šio ciklo tekstų parašyta gerokai meniškiau nei renesansinių giesmynų kūriniai.

Straipsnis skirtas aptarti filosofo Algio Uždavinio dvasios atgimimo sampratą naudojantis lyginamųjų civilizacijų tyrinėjimų metodu. Publikacijoje atskiriamas istorinis europietiškas renesansas ir hermetinė, sufistinės dvasios atgimimo koncepcijos. Parodoma, kaip sufistinio ar hermetinio-noetinio kosmo ratuose dvasios atgimimas gali būti aiškinamas kaip simbolinis-ontinis įvykis ir teurginis veiksmas vienu metu. Tariama, kad šios hermeneutinės, meditacinės, ekstatinės veiklos, transformacijos yra dvasios išsilaisvinimas iš kasdienybės priklausomybių, išsivadavimas iš egoistinės fantazijos ir kolektyvinės ideologijos prievartos. Savimonės pokyčiai, teurginio veiksmo (bendradarbiaujant su dievais) temos yra centrinės Uždavinio filosofijai, kaip ir daugeliui neoplatonizmo, hermetizmo ar sufizmo filosofijos atstovų. Jis savo tekstuose minėtas didžiąsias metafizines tradicijas nagrinėja nuosekliai įveikdamas ir kritikuodamas europocentrizmo ribotumą ir nubrėžia alternatyvią, galimą europiečio mąstymo raidą, siūlančią patirti panašų, teurginį, žmogaus esmės, dieviškumo prabudimo džiaugsmą. Toks aiškinimas atveria hermetinio ir sufistinio atgimimo sąvokos ir praktikos turinį ir kartu suteikia galimybę pažvelgti į europietiškąjį renesansą kitu žvilgsniu. Article is devoted to the discussion of the philosopher Algis Uždavinys' concept of the resurgence of spirit by using the method of the comparative studies of civilization. The historical European Renaissance is separated from the Hermetic, Sufist concept of the resurgence of spirit. The paper shows that the revival of the divine-human soul could be explained as both a symbolic and a theurgic act, or as an event in Sufist or Hermetic circles of the cosmos. It is presupposed that the Hermetic, meditative, ecstatic activities and transformations constitute a liberation of the divine spirit from dependencies on everyday life, from egoistic fantasy and collective ideological coercion. The cosmic changes in self-consciousness, the onto-topics of theurgy (in collaboration with the gods) are central for the philosophy of Uždavinys as they are for a number of representatives of Neoplatonism, Hermeticism, and Sufism. In his texts, by considering all the aforementioned big metaphysical traditions Uždavinys questions, criticizes, and ultimately overcomes the limits of Eurocentrism. He demonstrates some possible ways to experience higher happiness and bliss through the resurgence of the essence of the human being thus offering a new way of philosophizing in Europe. The Hermetic and Neoplatonic roots of wisdom, the Sufi conception of the revival explains and imbues with significance mystic practices and contemplations, a special type of life and public behavior in the West. Besides, the interpretation of Eastern philosophical traditions makes it possible to approach the philosophy of the European Renaissance from yet another perspective.

Po Smolensko praradimo 1514 m. buvo pasiekta svarbi pergalė prieš Maskvos kariuomenę prie Oršos. Lenkijos ir Lietuvos valdovas Žygimantas pačiame mūšyje nedalyvavo, tačiau parodė veiklumą telkdamas kariuomenę, vadovavo jai iki karo stovyklos Borisove, kur pasiliko saugomas 4000 karių. Mūšio lauke lietuvių ir lenkų jungtiniams daliniams vadovavo Lietuvos didysis etmonas Konstantinas Ostrogiškis. Straipsnyje analizuojama, kaip ši situacija atsispindi rašytiniuose šaltiniuose apie mūšį, kaip pergalės proga rašytuose tekstuose atskleidžiamas valdovo, Lenkijos karaliaus ir Lietuvos didžiojo kunigaikščio (toliau - Lk ir Ldk), vaidmuo. Siekiant atsakyti į klausimą, kokią vietą šaltiniuose užima valdovo figūra, atidžiau pažvelgiama į naratyvinius tekstus, skirtus katalikiškajai Europai, ir proginius poezijos kūrinius, rašytus netrukus po pergalės. It was a usual practice from the times of the Roman emperors and even prior, to attribute the victories of the military leaders to the rulers. Sigismund the Old demonstrated his initiative by assembling the army and seeking to reverse, in 1514, the course of the war of 1512-1522 with Moscow, in the direction more favourable to Lithuania. After the loss of Smolensk, an important victory was achieved against Moscow's troops at Orsha. The ruler was not-involved in the battle, with quite a significant part of the troops - 4000 soldiers - staying away at quite a distance in the camp in Borisov. The joint Lithuanian and Polish units were led on the battle field by Great Hetamn of Lithuania Konstantin Ostrozskij. The article analyzes how this situation is reflected in the written sources about the battle. The question about the role of the ruler's figure in historical sources prompts a closer look at the narrative texts dedicated to the Catholic part of Europe as well as literary works composed on certain occasions. Among the official letters carrying the news of the victory, the letter by Sigismund the Old to the pope appears of the utmost importance and has been published repeatedly. The sole circumstance of the king speaking on his behalf leads to the association of all the events with the king's actions. The letter rings a pronouncedly triumphant note and serves the obvious propaganda objective - to depict the enemy in a negative light and to aggrandize the author's mission and success. [...] Most of the poetical works dedicated to the victory at Orsha, were first of all promptly published in Krakow; subsequently they were included into the collection "Carmina de memorabili cede Scismaticorum Moscouiorum" published in Rome in 1515. The article discusses the poems in terms of the depiction of the ruler. Of them, stand out the poems written in Vilnius by Andreas Cricius (Andrzej Krzycki), the then-secretary of Barbara, the first wife of the king. They mention most of the military leaders that took part in the battle (Konstantin Ostrozskij, Janusz Swierczowski, Wojciech Sampoliński, Jurgis Radvila) and other details. Yet other poetic works dedicated to the victory, by Joannes Dantiscus (pol. Jan Dantyszek), Valentinus Ekius (Valentin Eck, Eckius, Ecchius), Christopherus Suchtenius (Christoph von Suchten), Casparus Ursinus Vėlius, Bernardus Vapovius (Bernard Wapowski), - are examples of laudatory writing dedicated to the occasion and include little realistic detail, mostly relying on the opposition of the pictures of victorious Sigismund and smitten Moscow's ruler, whose losses are especially emphasized. Despite some shared features, repetitive common places (loci communes) and motives, these authors each had their own poetic concept, distinct in their creative ideas, poetic composition, completeness, poetic form, intonation and poetics.

Renesanso epochoje avalynė buvo svarbi kostiumo dalis. Skirtingų socialinių sluoksnių žmonės avėjo skirtingą avalynę. Tai patvirtina ikonografija ir rašytiniai šaltiniai. Deja, istorinės šio laikotarpio avalynės radinių yra išlikę labai mažai. Todėl didžioji dalis šios avalynės rekonstruojama remiantis archeologine medžiaga. Dažniausiai vien pagal išorinius požymius archeologinių avalynės radinių neįmanoma priskirti kuriam nors socialiniam sluoksniui. Tik išsamūs ir įvairiapusiai individualių avalynės radinių tyrimai, duomenis papildžius istorinių šaltinių informacija ir ikonografine medžiaga, leidžia atskleisti skirtingų socialinių sluoksnių avalynės požymius. Aptariama tema Lietuvoje beveik netyrinėta. Šio laikotarpio avalynės skirtumai mažai analizuoti Europoje ir kaimyniniuose kraštuose. Remiantis individualių Lietuvos archeologinių avalynės radinių iš skirtingų vietų tyrimų duomenimis (šiuo metu visa medžiaga yra tik iš Vilniaus) galima teigti, kad iš ožkos ar kitų gyvūnų (išskyrus galvijus) odos pagaminta, šviesi ar ryškesnės spalvos, sudėtingesnės konstrukcijos, rantinio tvirtinimo, praplatinta priekine dalimi, tekstile puošta ir modelinė avalynė turėtų būti skiriama aukštesnio socialinio statuso visuomenės atstovams. Tamsesnę, nedekoruotą, prastesnės kokybės galvijų odos ir paprastesnės konstrukcijos avalynę avėjo žemesnio socialinio sluoksnio gyventojai. Perforacija puošta avalynė taip pat yra aukštesnio socialinio statuso žmonių avalynės požymis, bet ji galėjo būti įperkama ir žemesnio socialinio sluoksnio atstovams Footwear was an important part of the costume in the Renaissance Epoch. People of different social class wore different footwear. This is evidenced by iconography and written sources. Regrettably, there are very few findings of the historical footwear from this period. Therefore, the major share of this footwear is reconstructed based on archaeological material. It is impossible to attribute the archaeological findings of footwear to any specific social class solely according to the external features. Only exhaustive and versatile investigations of individual footwear findings, having supplemented the data with the information from historical sources and iconographic material, allow revealing the features of footwear of different social classes. The discussed topic has been scarcely investigated in Lithuania. The differences of footwear of this period have been little analysed in Europe and neighbouring countries. Based on the data of investigations of individual Lithuanian archaeological footwear findings from different locations (all material currently comes from Vilnius), we may state that footwear made from goat’s or other animals’ (except livestock) skin, of light or brighter colour, more sophisticated construction, rand fastening, wider front part, ornamented in textile and modelled footwear should be attributed to people from a higher social class. Darker, not decorated footwear of simpler construction, made from lower quality stock skin, was worn by lower social class representatives. Perforated footwear also belonged to people from a higher social class, yet lower social class representatives could also afford it.

Mikalojus Daukša (*tarp 1527 ir 1538 Babėnuose (dab. Kėdainių miesto dalis)-†1613 II Varniuose) - Žemaičių kanauninkas, pirmųjų lietuviškų knygų, išspausdintų Lietuvoje, autorius. Rūpindamasis Dievo žodžio skelbimu gimtąja kalba, jis išvertė ir parengė keletą būtiniausių kasdieniam Bažnyčios gyvenimui veikalų: ispano kunigo Jokūbo Ledesmos SJ (*1522-†1570) katekizmą ir lenko kunigo Jokūbo Wujeko SJ (*1541-†1597) mažąją postilę. Abiejų knygų kalbos, stilistikos ir rašybos pagrindu susiformavo vidurinis lietuvių rašto kalbos variantas, anuomet vadintas "žemaičių kalba" (gyvavo iki XIX a.) ir daugiausia vartotas religiniuose raštuose.

Motiejus Strijkovskis (Maciej Stryjkowski, Matthias Striicovius Osostevicius, *1547 III 21 Strikove netoli Lodzės (Lenkija)-†apie 1590 greičiausiai Lietuvoje, Jurbarke) - lenkiškai ir lotyniškai rašęs istoriografas, poetas, pirmosios išspausdintos Lietuvos istorijos autorius. Strijkovskio kūriniai stebina erudicija, tačiau iki šiol nedaug ką tikra žinome apie jo mokslą ir studijas. Abejonių nekelia tai, kad 1553- 1561 m. jis mokėsi parapinėje Bžezinų mokykloje. Paskutiniais mokymosi metais jis patyrė sunkią galvos traumą. Per metus atsistojęs ant kojų, 1563 m. Strijkovskis su Poznanės kašteliono Petro Čarnkovskio palyda atvyko į Vilnių. Iš čia jis nebegrįžo atgal, o su lietuvių kariuomene patraukė prie rytinių Lietuvos sienų, į karo su Maskva frontą. 1564-1574 m. jis dalyvavo karo veiksmuose prieš Maskvą. 1574 m. Strijkovskis išvyko į Krokuvą, kur dalyvavo karaliaus Henriko Valua vainikavimo iškilmėse. Tų metų pabaigoje jis su Lenkijos pasiuntiniu Andriumi Taranovskiu iškeliavo į Konstantinopolį. 1575 m. grįžęs iš diplomatinės misijos, Strijkovskis kurį laiką praleido Krokuvoje, rinkdamas medžiagą savo istoriniams veikalams, o paskui išvyko į Lietuvą. Nuo 1576 m. jis gyveno Slucke pas kunigaikščius Olelkaičius. Mirus globėjui Jurgiui Olelkaičiui, Strijkovskis 1578 m. pabaigoje ar 1579 m. pradžioje persikėlė į Varnius, buvo globojamas Žemaičių vyskupo Merkelio Giedraičio. 1580 m. istorikas per Liepoją nukeliavo į Karaliaučių, kur baigė tvarkyti savo Kronikos tekstą ir galbūt prižiūrėjo jos leidybą. 1582 m. jis grįžo į Žemaitiją. 1586 m. pabaigoje jį randame klebonaujantį Jurbarke. Kadangi po 1590 m. dokumentuose minimas kitas Jurbarko klebonas, manoma kad Strijkovskis ten ir mirė apie 1590-uosius.

Straipsnyje apžvelgiama, kokį poveikį įvairioms Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės raštijos ir apskritai kultūros sritims, taip pat kultūrinio gyvenimo kontekstui turėjo 1514 m. LDK kariuomenės pergalė prieš Maskvos kariuomenę prie Oršos. Informuoti apie pergalę ir ją išgarsinti buvo pasitelkta gausi korespondencija, triumfo renginiai, buvo sukurta nemažai eiliuotų proginių kūrinių, išspausdintų ne tik Krokuvoje, bet ir Bazelyje, Romoje ir plačiai paplitusių. Informacija apie įvykį pateko į vokiškus vienkartinius naujienų leidinius. Šios pergalės pasekmės buvo 1515 m. suvažiavimas Vienoje ir, netiesiogiai, – net šv. Kazimiero, tikro valdovo Žygimanto brolio, kanonizacijos bylos pradžia. Galima teigti, kad pergalė paskatino svarbaus vėlesnio literatūrinio veikalo – Jono Visliciečio poemos Bellum Prutenum (1516) atsiradimą. Daugelis šių raštų ir renginių skleidė garsą apie Lietuvą, jos valdovus, sostinę Vilnių.Tokios propagandos ir kultūrinės sklaidos formos puikiai atitiko Žygimanto Senojo ir Jogailaičių dinastijos politinius interesus regione ir Europoje (visų pirma santykiuose su Habsburgais), o kartu žymėjo įsitvirtinančią Lietuvoje kultūrinę Renesanso epochą. The article gives an overview of the influence that the 1514 victory of the GDL army at Orsha had on various fields of GDL literature and culture in general. The victory was made widely known through copious correspondence and triumphal celebrations. It was lauded in numerous occasional poems and other writings, which were printed not only in Cracow, but as far as in Basel and Rome, and gained a wide popularity. Information about the victory also reached German one-time publications news. Among the consequences of the victory were such important events as the 1515 Congress of Vienna, and indirectly, the beginning of the canonisation case of St. Casimir in 1517 in Rome. The victory can be said to have prompted the appearance of an important poetic work of a later period by Joannes Vislicensis Bellum Prutenum (1516). A majority of these writings and celebrations made Lithuania, its rulers and the capital, Vilnius much better known abroad. Such forms of propaganda and culture dissemination not only were in perfect accord with the political interests of Sigismund the Old and the Jagiellonian dynasty in the region and in Europe (first of all, in their relations with the Habsburgs), but also signified the advent of Renaissance to Lithuania.

Straipsnyje aptariamas mecenatystės fenomenas, labiausiai istoriškai ir kultūriškai apmąstytas Renesanso laikais. Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės (toliau - LDK) literatūroje apie neišvengiamą mecenatystės naudą valstybės gerbūviui kalbėjo Jonas iš Vislicos, Mikalojus Husovianas, kiti vėlyvojo Renesanso poetai. Iš rytinių Vokietijos žemių kilęs Johanas Milijus, tarnavęs dvaro poetu pas kunigaikštį Grigorijų Chodkevičių, savo teoriniuose svarstymuose ir poetinėje kūryboje kalbėjo apie mokslų globėjiškumą. Ši įtaka atkeliavo iš Vokietijos humanistų idėjų, skleidžiamų Johanno Reichlino, Adamo Schröderio, Danieliaus Hermanno ir kitų poetų kūryboje. Savo originalų mecenato paveikslą ir jo vietą visuomenėje aprašė poetas Jonas Radvanas knygoje Radviliada (1592). Renesanso epochoje mecenatystės, mokslų globėjiškumo tema buvo labai populiari daugelio LDK poetų kūryboje. Gajaus Mecenato kalba rašiusių senųjų LDK poetų žodžiai - tai kreipimasis per epochas į kitas kartas, kvietimas puoselėti geriausias mecenatystės tradicijas. The phenomenon of patronage was a repeated object of study in various forms of art. As far as literary monuments are concerned, this issue was considered to be a precondition for the appearance of a variety of literary works (works of S. Łempicki, A. Sajkowski, A. Skepjan). But if we refer to the ancient literature of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, it appears that the authors ofthat epoch - "the epoch of the omnipotence of the poets able to immortalize events and people" (J. Nowak-Dlużewski) - left from their deserving attention discussions concerning the essence and goals of patronage. Ioannes Visliciensis (in his prose address to the master Pavel Russin from the book Prussian War, 1516) was among the first to draw attention to the connection between the public recognition of a piece of art and the patronage of a famous and authoritarian person. Nicolaus Hussovianus developed his ideas concerning the vital necessity that the prosperity of the state played in patronage in the dedication of the poem Carmen de statura... bisontis (1523) addressed to the Queen Bona Sforza. The poets of the Late Renaissance also dealt with the topic mentioned above. Johannes Mylius, German by birth, the poet laureate of the prince Hrehory Chodkewicz, proved the necessity of extending patronage to sciences, first of all, to philology, not only in his theoretical discourses but also in his poetic works. Of course, here one should note the influence of German humanists, especially Johann Reuchlin. Similar considerations were expressed by Adam Schroether (in the prose dedication of the poem About the Lithuanian river Neman (1682)), also by Franciscus Gradovius (in the epigram to the coat of arms of Radzivil Family from the introduction to the poem Description of the Moscow expedition of Christopher Radzivil (1582)). The Vilna poet Ioannes Radvanus expressed in artistic form his original vision of the image of patronage and its role in society in his book Radivilias, or About life and feats... of Nicolai Radzivil (1592). The fact that the topic of patronage and the protection of sciences was popular and relevant for many poets of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, is testimony of the high spiritual atmosphere which was created, developed and actively promoted by the courts of major magnates of our state in the 16th century. It was namely that epoch which gave powerful stimulus to the spiritual development of many present-day people.

Straipsnyje analizuojamos pagrindinės politikos mokslo atsiradimo prielaidos. Įprasta manyti, jog politikos mokslo gimimą iš esmės lėmė pozityvizmo filosofija. Šiame straipsnyje bandoma parodyti, kad tam tikros politikos mokslo prielaidos buvo suformuotos gerokai anksčiau. Klasikinės politikos sampratos atmetimas ir naujos, modernios politikos sampratos formavimasis, pastebimas jau Renesanso pasaulėjautoje, N. Machiavelli’o ir Th. Hobbeso politinėse teorijose, leido iškelti žmogaus ir politikos „konstruojamumo“ idėjas. Teigiama, jog moderni politikos samprata buvo viena iš būtinų politikos mokslo sąlygų. XVII a. mokslo revoliucija paskatino mąstytojus į filosofiją perkelti gamtos mokslų metodus. Gamtos mokslų metodais pakelti filosofiją į naują mokslinį lygmenį buvo vienas didžiausių daugelio Apšvietos filosofų tikslų. The aim is to show that the rupture in the history of political philosophy in the Renaissance, the refusal of the classical political thought about human nature as zoon politikon and about purpose of state, and the birth of modern political ideas about politics as mechanics, was conditio sine qua non for the emergence of the new political science. Main philosophers who initiated this rupture were N. Machiavelli and Th. Hobbes. The 17th century scientific revolution and Enlightenment helped to bring the methods of natural sciences into philosophy. All those ideas were fused together in Positivism which played a pivotal role in the emergence of Political science.Keywords: Renaissance, Enlightenment, positivism, Mill, Comte.

Skirtingai nei daugelis Renesanso autorių, Strijkovskis buvo iš karto palankiai amžininkų priimtas, o jo kūryba, pirmiausia "Kronika", pasklido ne tik senojoje Lietuvoje, bet ir visame Vidurio ir Rytų Europos regione. "Kronika" darė poveikį visu laikotarpiu iki pat Abiejų Tautų Respublikos žlugimo ir netgi vėliau. Tas poveikis nebuvo vienodas. Iš pradžių jo būta stipresnio; pasirodžius Alberto Kojalavičiaus "Lietuvos istorijai", tas poveikis apsilpo, tačiau nuo XIX a. pradžios ji vėl buvo plačiau skaitoma, perspausdinama, ja buvo remiamasi grožiniuose kūriniuose ir Lietuvos mokyklose. Tai lėmė kelios svarbios ypatybės. Strijkovskio "Kronikos" tekstai atitiko kelių kartų visuomenės ideologinius, politinius, kultūrinius ir meninius lūkesčius. Antra, kaip ir Trečiasis Lietuvos Statutas, Kronika savomis - idėjinėmis ir meninėmis - priemonėmis grindė Respublikos pilietinės tautos politinę ir kultūrinę tapatybę. Trečia, Kronikos sėkmingą sklaidą užtikrino kalba, kuria ji buvo parašyta. XVI a. tapusi regionine bendravimo ir visokeriopos komunikacijos priemone, lenkų kalba savo ruožtu garantavo ilgesnį gyvavimą visiems ja parašytiems raštijos paminklams bei literatūros kūriniams.

Jonas Radvanas (†po 1592) - žymiausias XVI a. lotyniškai rašęs lietuvių poetas, herojinio epo "Radviliada" (Radivilias) autorius. Iki šiol labai mažai ką žinome apie Radvaną, todėl apie jo gyvenimą daugiausia galime papasakoti, pasirėmę jo kūriniais. Jo eilėraščiai bei poemos buvo spausdinami laikotarpiu nuo XVI a. devinto dešimtmečio vidurio (1584) iki dešimtojo pradžios (1592), todėl galime spėti jį gimus apie XVI a. vidurį. Radviliadoje užrašyta keletas lietuviškų žodžių. Jų kalbinės ypatybės (pavyzdžiui, galimas trumpųjų kirčiuotų balsių liginimas) ir tai, kad pirmą žinomą savo eilėraštį Radvanas pasirašė Vilniečiu (Joatmes Raduanouius Vilnensis), rodytų, kad poetas galėjo būti kilęs iš Rytų Aukštaitijos (galbūt Vilniaus krašto) arba ilgai čia gyventi. Nežinome nė to, kur jo mokytasi.

Straipsnio tikslas yra palyginti, kaip Žalgirio mūšis ir karalius Vladislovas Jogaila vaizduotas Jano Kochanovskio poezijoje ir Motiejaus Strijkovskio „Lenkijos, Lietuvos, Žemaičių ir visos Rusios kronikoje“ (1582). Kochanovskis mūšiui neskyrė specialaus kūrinio, o apie jį ir karalių Jogailą rašė Vladislovui Varniečiui skirtame, nors nebaigtame darbe bei odėje „Vėliavėlė arba prūsų duoklė“ (1569, išleistas 1587). Autorius lygina Jogailos paveikslą Žalgirio mūšyje su karaliaus Vladislovo vaizdavimu mūšyje prie Varnos lenkų poezijoje XV-XVI amžiais (iki Jano Kochanovskio). Tai leidžia teigti, kad tiek Kochanovkis, tiek Strijkovskis laikėsi abiejų valdovų vertinimo tradicijos: karalius Jogaila nugalėtojas, o Varnietis pomirtine šlove apgaubtas riteris. Tačiau Kochanovskis renkasi renesanso epochai būdingus vaizdinius – pamaldumą, nuolankumą Apvaizdos akivaizdoje, Jogailai dovanotą pergalę ar Varniečio drąsą ir jam lemtą nesėkmę. Tuo tarpu Strijkovskis abiem atvejais renkasi epinį pasakojimą, nors nuo tradicijos pernelyg nenutolsta. Straipsnyje analizuojamas Žalgirio mūšio 600-šimtųjų metų minėjimo kontekstas, primenama nuo Jogailos ir Jogailaičių laikų susiklosčiusi mūšio minėjimo tradicija bei jos sunykimas renkamų karalių laikais ir netekus nepriklausomybės, taip pat kulto grįžimas 1910 metais. Apibendrinant galima kalbėti apie dvi Žalgirio mūšio vizijas: poetinę Kochanovskio ir labiau istorikui metraštininkui būdingą Strijkovskio. Pirmasis poetiškai perteikia vien stereopinius mūšio bruožus, antrasis detalizuoja ir atskiroms detalėms suteikia poetinio iškilmingumo. The article aims to compare how the Battle of Grunwald and King Władysław Jagiełło were pictured in Jan Kochanowski’s poetry and Maciej Stryjkowski’s “Chronicle of Poland, Lithuania, Samogitia and all of Ruthenia” (1582). Kochanowski did not dedicate any special piece of writing to the battle and wrote about it and King Jagiełło in an unfinished work dedicated to Władysław of Varna and in the ode “The Banner, or the Prussian Homage” (1569, published in 1587). The author compares the picture of Jagiełło in the Battle of Grunwald with the depiction of King Władysław in the Battle of Varna in the 15th–16th-century Polish poetry (before Jan Kochanowski). This means that both Kochanowski and Stryjkowski upheld the tradition of appreciating the both rulers: King Jagiełło was a winner and Władysław of Varna was a knight covered in posthumous glory. Kochanowski, however, chose images typical of the Renaissance Period – piety and obedience to the Divine, a victory given to Jagiełło or Władysław of Varna’s courage and fate of being doomed to failure. Meanwhile, in both cases, Stryjkowski chose an epic narrative, though he did not depart from the tradition too much. The article examines the commemoration context of the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald, recalls the tradition of marking the battle started in the times of Jagiełło and the Jagiellonians, and its decay in times of elected Kings and after the loss of independence, and also the return of the cult in 1910. To conclude, two visions of the Battle of Grunwald can be mentioned: Kochanowski’s poetic vision and Stryjkowski’s vision more typical of a historian and chronicler. The first poetically conveyed only stereotypical features of the battle, while the latter gave separate details to poetically solemnise it.

Europos kultūros istorijoje Renesansu vadinamas laikotarpis, Italijoje trukęs nuo XIV a. iki XVI a. pradžios, o likusioje Europos dalyje - maždaug nuo XV a. iki XVI a. pabaigos. Lietuvoje Renesanso apraiškų pastebime XVI a. pradžioje, o jo įsigalėjimo pradžią datuojame XVI a. viduriu. Šio laikotarpio pabaigą galima sieti su kai kuriais svarbiais XVI a. antrosios pusės įvykiais, formavusiais savitus jau kitos - Baroko - epochos pavidalus: Kontrreformacijos pradžia XVI a. aštuntajame dešimtmetyje, jėzuitų mokymo ir mokslo įstaigų sistemos susiformavimu antroje XVI a. pusėje (1570 Vilniuje atidaroma jėzuitų kolegija, 1579 jos pagrindu įsteigiamas universitetas; iki amžiaus pabaigos tokios kolegijos atidaromos dar Polocke, Rygoje, Tartu ir Nesvyžiuje), taip pat ypač reikšmingomis valstybės teisės (Trečiasis Lietuvos Statutas, 1589), Bažnyčios (Brastos unija, 1596) reformomis ir kt. Renesanso LDK literatūros paminklų eilę pradeda lotyniškos Mikalojaus Husoviano poemos, o užbaigia Jono Radvano "Radivilias" (Radviliada, 1592). Į tą gretą taip pat patenka religiniai raštai lietuvių, lenkų, rusėnų, lotynų ir vokiečių kalbomis, ėję tiek Kunigaikštijoje, tiek kaimyninėje Prūsijoje, kurią vasalinė priklausomybė visu šiuo laikotarpiu siejo su Gediminaičių dinastijos valdoma Lenkijos Karalyste, o kultūrinis ir etninis bendrumas - su ta pačia Lenkija, Livonija ir Lietuva.

Šiandien galime rinktis tarp Kotrynos II lietuviams siūlyto „įtvirtintos tvarkos“ pasakojimo ir LDK Respublikos kurto laisvės naratyvo, tarp skirtingų tautos praeities perskaitymų. Neįmanoma gyventi be pasakojimo. Pasakojimas – savitas tautos savikūros būdas. Juo remdamasi bendruomenė gali konstruoti ir saugoti socialinę tikrovę. Būtent ši pasakojimo galia sureikšmina ir istoriko vaidmenį: nuo jo profesinės bei etinės laikysenos priklauso, kokia tautos praeitis formuoja jos ateitį. Todėl svarbu, kad pasakotojo pasirinkimas būtų kuo sąmoningesnis ir atsakingesnis. Atsakingam pasakotojui derėtų pasverti vieno ar kito naratyvo įtaką dabartinės bendruomenės tapatybei bei jos elgsenoms. Pačiai istorikų bendrijai šiandien reikėtų išsamiau nagrinėti ir aptarinėti viešai sekamo istorinio pasakojimo ištakas, kompoziciją, nuostatas bei pobūdį. Būtinas didesnis dėmesys vadovėlių naratyvui. Nuo mūsų valios pareina, ar šiandienos nacionalinis naratyvas bus iš svetimų tekstų nuolaužų sudėliotas, inertiškas, nesavarankiškas, nerišlus, uždaras, monologiškas, depresyvus, ar gebėsime jį kurti savarankišką, atvirą, polilogišką, nuoseklų, aistringai tiesos siekiantį, išėjusiųjų ir gyvųjų dialogu grįstą. Pirmasis pasirinkimas kur kas paprastesnis. Antrasis pasirinkimas reikalauja kur kas daugiau kūrybinių pastangų, maištingos abejonės ankstesnių istorinių diskursų įtvirtintais teiginiais, sunkių tiesos paieškų. Tačiau būtent iš tokio sąmoningo pasirinkimo kilusiu nacionaliniu pasakojimu galėtų gerokai patikimiau remtis trečiosios Lietuvos Respublikos laisvė. Today we can choose between a narrative about “the established order” suggested by Catherine II and a narrative of freedom created by the Republic of the GDL and between different readings about the nation's past. It is impossible to live without a narrative. A narrative is a distinctive way of self-creation of the nation. With regard to it, a community may construct and secure social reality. This power of the narrative gives significance to a historian's role: the past which forms the future depends on a historian's professional and ethical position. Therefore it is important that a narrator's choice would be as conscious and responsible as possible. A responsible narrator should decide between the influence of one or another narrative to the identity of nowadays community and its behaviour. Currently, a wide community of historians should analyse and discuss the beginnings, composition, attitudes and nature of a publicly told historic narrative in more detail. More attention should be paid to the narrative in textbooks. It depends on our will if a nowadays national narrative is going to be made of fragments from borrowed texts and characterised as inert, dependent, incoherent, close, monologic, and depressive or we will be able to make it independent, open, polylogic, consistent, passionately seeking for truth and based on a dialogue between the dead and the living. The first choice is much simpler. The second one requires much more creative effort, rebellious doubt regarding the well-established statements of former historical discourses and hard search for truth. However, the third freedom of the republic of Lithuania could be more reliably based on a national narrative derived from this conscious choice.

Konstatuojama, kad Lietuvos paminėjimai yra gana reti. Viduramžių kūriniuose ją „paslepia“ bendresni aisčių arba baltų genčių (prūsų, sembų) pavadinimai. Tikrinis Lietuvos vardas, nedidelių teritorinių vienetų pavadinimai ir valdovų vardai pirmą kartą iškyla vėlyvųjų viduramžių poeto Guillaume’o de Machaut epinėse poemose. Padėtis nepakinta ir kitų epochų kūriniuose, tik Lietuva būna „pasislėpusi“ nebe už baltų genčių, bet už Lenkijos. Daugiausia informacijos apie Lietuvą, kaip apie atskirą valstybę, pateikiama XVIII a. Enciklopedijoje. Beveik visais analizuotais atvejais Lietuvos paminėjimai įgyja kito, svetimo, pagonio, kurį reikia apkrikštyti bei paversti civilizuotu ir savu, konotacijas. Net Enciklopedijos straipsnyje, kuris turėtų išlaikyti objektyvumo siekį, neišvengiama gana subjektyvaus vertinimo, ir Lietuva priskiriama barbariškajai Europos daliai. The article attempts to clarify when, in which circumstances and contexts did various epochs and written genres of the French language made reference to such words as Lithuania and Lithuanian or concepts, sayings and descriptions of old Baltic tribes. In the Song of Roland (11th cent.), in works by Guillaume de Machaut (~1300–1377) “Dit du Lion” and “Confort d'ami”, in the poem by Philippe Desportes (1546–1606) “Au revoir la France”, “Au revoir la Pologne”, Essay by Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592), treatise by Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712–1778) “Du contrat social ou Principes du droit politique” and encyclopaedia published by Denis Diderot and Jean Le Rond d’Alembert from 1751 to 1772. It is stated that very few references were made to the name of Lithuania. In Medieval works its name was “hidden” under more general names of Aistian or Baltic tribes (Prussians and Sembs). The proper name of Lithuania and small territorial units or rulers were first mentioned in epic poems by Medieval poet Guillaume de Machaut. Situation remained unchanged in works of later epochs, the only difference being that the proper name of Lithuania was now “hidden” not under the names of Baltic tribes but under the name of Poland. Most of information about Lithuania as an individual state is presented in the encyclopaedia of 18th century. In almost all analysed cases references to Lithuania have connotations of something alien, pagan which needs to be baptised and civilised and made one of us. Even in the encyclopaedic article which should primarily seek to present an impartial account, the description is rather partial and Lithuania is attributed to the barbaric parts of Europe.

The initial knowledge about the representative buildings, which used to be in the Dubingiai castle place, can be traced back to the 15th c, when, in 1415 Vytautas, the grand duke of Lithuania, invited the king Jogaila to stay at Dubingiai castle place. There is no doubt that since the 15th c a stone palace stood in that place. There, as a sourcebooks claim, the queen Barbora made a stay in the middle of the 16th c. The excavated palace is dated from the end of the15th c to the beginning of the 16th c. It was a moderate building (about 17 m in the East–West direction and 15 m in the South–North direction). It was of an almost square shape, had a ground floor, first floor and a cellar, made of stone, not plastered from the outside, attributed to the gothic style. The parts which persisted and were explored during the research are: the staircase to the ground floor, a segment of the flooring of the ground floor, the ceramic tiles, and the remains of the annex (initially the watchman place, later it was transformed into the kitchen), which was projected above the cylindrical cellar arch and was of a 4 x 9 m in size (S–N x E–W direction). Above the cellars the flooring remained, it was set-up of the ceramic, non-glazed tiles (21 x 17.8 x 5.4 cm), together with that, a section of the ground floor walls, which have a thickness of a 1–1.115 m, endured. The walls were made of red bricks (27.5–30 x 13.5–14.5 x 7–8 cm), using a whitish fine-grained grout together with bulky stones, of about 0.5 x 0.6 m in size.In the middle of the 16th c, after the fall of the cellar arch in 1547, repair works were done: the old building was fortified with a counterfort sustaining the southern wall; the staircase was attributed to the guard annex on the northeastern side, it served as a separate exit to the northerly household yard; on the northeastern angle of the palace, close to the staircase, a latrin (a toilet and a leakage accumulator) was set, its shape was of a small turret, it was obviously connected to the halls of the ground and the first floor.In the beginning of the 17th c, by the initiative of Kristupas Radvila (1585–1640), the palace was reconstructed, it was enlarged in double. The evidence for the date of the annex building is the Dutch pipe piece, which was found in the base pit close to the Southern wall. It has a repousse inscription on its stem, it says “IONAS” (letters N and S written backwards), and 1633. The length of the new annex – 11.5 m (E–W direction), the width – about 10.5 m2. Accordingly, the area of the western lodgments (hall and a hallway) took 38.4 m and 17.9 m2, while the second hall and the hallway, which were attached to the old palace, took 18.5 m2 and 7.5 m2. The outer walls of the annex were 0,75–0,85 m in thickness. They were tied in renaissance way with the 28 x 14 x 7 cm bricks with passes. Comparatively thin outer walls of the building show, that the annex had only one floor. The annex floor was reveted with square, ceramic, non-glazed tiles, their measurements are 27.5 x 27.5 x 5 cm. The lodgements had stained glass windows, as they are mentioned in the stock. During the researches quite a lot of greenish glass (0.2 cm in thickness) was found, most of the lightplates had a shape of a triangle. The inner hall walls of (0.5 m high persisted) were plastered with white daub. It is possible that the ceiling was wooden, the roof was covered with flat tilings (a were found in the remains of the palace).One of the most interesting elements of the palace interior is the place of a former tile stove, it was detected in the annex hall. During the research the bakestone of the stove was found, it was of a 1.62 m length, the legs of the bakestone persisted very well. They are circular, 14 cm in diameter, 7 cm in high, the bricks were made in a round shape reminding columns.Among the palace findings there are a lot of building materials: bricks and brickbats, calcimine, flat tiling, more seldom pantiles, fragments of stained-glass and frames. Another large part of findings consists of tiles and kitchen-ceramics. Traditional techniques such as modeling and throwing prevail, it points to the rough moulding, grinded stone, usage of wide clay straps, the articles were burned in oxidation. Some articles were decorated using the round stamp ornament. Very few fragments of gothic or black – urban ceramics were found: the bottom parts of a bowl, decorated with a round stamp ornament, and a thin-pane jar. The tiles were undamaged and very different: concave, cylindrical and square tiles; decorated with the vegetal ornaments and blazonry; backgrounds differ in colour, some of them white, some blue, or green. In the middle of the tile there is an armorial brown eagle with yellow legs, a shield. The green-glazed tiles were decorated with the initials of Žygimantas Augustas, the armorial tile, with Vytis, the square tiles decorated with religious ornaments (Madonna and a pear). The tiles of the 17th c were decorated with vegetal ornaments and covered with a green glaze, or were not glazed at all.Other findings were: segments of chalices, a knife, an ax, a ring, a fingertip, the bottom part of a glass mug, the sole of a wineglass, stylus (medieval tool for writing), a chess counter made of bone, a tip of a bow arrow, a stone spindle, bone planking ornamented with geometrical motives, coins (a coin of Kazimieras Jogailaitis (3rd type), Aleksandras half-penny, half-pennies of Žygimantas Augustas, shilling of Karolis the XIth, half-penny of Žygimantas the Old, Jonas Kazimeras shillings etc).The research of Dubingiai palace will continue. It is foreseen to investigate the gothic cellars and the yard of the palace. The excavated masonry were registered in detail, all the cultural layers were fixed with the 3D scanner. A detailed photofixation was made, the course of the research is being filmed, the initial stylistical cartogram of the masonry is already prepared, about 10 000 archaeological findings are already inventorized.The excavated parts of the palace are covered with a temporal mantle and partly mothballed, but in the short run a special, modern museum-like mantle is going to be built. The author of the mantle project is an architect R. Zilinskas.

Pirmoje straipsnio dalyje, aptariančioje literatūros ir istorijos sąsajas, išryškinamas istorinės ir poetinės vaizduotės giminingumas. Remiantis F. Nietzsche's, J. Ruseno, H.White'o darbais, atskleidžiama istorinių pasakojimų tipologinė įvairovė, pagrįsta retorinės kalbos figūrų, populiarių naratyvinių modelių panaudojimu, praeities įprasminimo būdų skirtybėmis. Akcentuojamas ir literatūros istoriškumas: pateikiama glausta lietuvių istorinių dramų tipologinė apžvalga, paremta Vakarų Europos istorinių-kultūrinių epochų periodizacija, kultūros istorijos, istorinės poetikos formų adaptavimu bei rekonstravimu, pritaikant ir kai kurias istorinio pasakojimo tipologines apibrėžtis. Antroje straipsnio dalyje atskleidžiamas Viduramžių vaizdinys neoromantinėse G. Landsbergio–-Žemkalnio, V. Krėvės, L. Giros, V. Mykolaičio–-Putino dramose, jų paralelės su preromantine gotikinio romano ir melodramos stilistika, integruojančia senąsias (kurtuazinio romano) bei moderniąsias (simbolizmo) poetikos formas In the first part of the article, which analyses interactive links between literature and history, the close relationships of historical and poetic imagery are highlighted. On the basis of the works of F. Nietzsche, J. Riisen, H. White, a typological variety of historical narratives is presented, and it focuses on the exploitation of the figures of rhetorical language and on the popular narrative patterns as well as on the conceptual inter-relationships between the past and the present. The historical dimension of literature is put forward by presenting a concise typological overview of Lithuanian historical dramas; the overview relies on the accepted periodization of historic and cultural epochs in West Europe, also on the adaptations and reconstructions of the historic – poetic forms and images of the history of culture; some typological definitions, well-fitting the historical narratives under discussion, are applied here. In the second part of the article, the ways of portraying medieval images in the neoromantic dramas of G. Landsbergis-Žemkalnis, V. Krėvė, L. Gira, V. Mykolaitis-Putinas are discussed; some attention is given to disclosing links between the above mentioned dramas and the stylistic peculiarities of the pre-romantic gothic novel and melodrama that integrate previously popular forms (for instance, in the knights novel) wit modern (symbolic) poetic forms

Literatūrinis bei mokslinis Alberto Kojalavičiaus palikimas kol kas nėra sudominęs šių dienų Baltarusijos mokslininkų taip, kaip Motiejaus Strijkovskio kūriniai. Tačiau tai tėra tik laiko klausimas, nes savu metu nė Strijkovskis baltarusių nedomino taip, kaip domina dabar. Pastaraisiais dešimtmečiais apie jį daug rašė Mikola Ulaščikas, Viačaslavas Čamiarickis, Siamonas Padokšinas, Ivanas Saverčanka, Albina Semiančuk ir kai kurie kiti šių dienų Baltarusijos tyrėjai. Strijkovskis buvo vienas iš mėgstamiausių XX amžiaus baltarusių literatūros klasiko Uladzimiro Karaškevičiaus autorių (jo apysakos „Kristus nusileido Gardine“ motto paimtas iš „Kronikos“). Strijkovskio recepcijos baltarusių kultūroje savitumą sudaro dėmesys pirmiausia poetinei, o ne istoriografinei kūrybai. Tai galima pagrįsti nuorodomis į poetinių „Kronikos“ intarpų vertimus, kuriuos parengė Alesius Briazgunovas, ir į šio straipsnio autoriaus apžvalgą, kurioje pateikiama informacija apie Strijkovskio kūrybinio palikimo recepciją įvairiakalbėje LDK poezijoje The literary and scientific heritage of Albert Kojalowicz so far has not attracted as much attention among modern-day Byelorussian scientists as the works of Maciej Stryjkowski. However, in the author's opinion, this is merely a question of time since even Stryjkowski earlier did not interest Byelorussian researches to the extent he interests them now. However, Mykolą Ulashchik, Vyachaslav Chamyaritsky, Syamon Padokshin, Ivan Saverchanko, Albina Semyanchuk and some other contemporary Byelorussian researchers wrote much about him in the course of the past decades. Stryjkowski was one of the favorite authors of the classic of the 20th century Byelorussian literature Uladzimir Karashkevich (the motto of his novella "Christ descended in Grodno" has been taken from the "Chronicle"). The peculiarity of Stryjkowski's reception in Byelorussian culture is that attention is accorded to his poetry rather than to his historical writings. This evaluation is based on the references to translations of poetic insertions in the text of the "Chronicle", prepared by Ales' Bryazgunov, and on the overview of the reception of Stryjkowski's cultural heritage in the multilingual poetry of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, compiled by the author of this article

XX a. Lietuvos tyrinėtojai, kaip ir kitų šalių mokslininkai, sistemingai domėjosi archeologiniais ornamentais ar liaudies raštais. Tačiau iki šiol XVI-XVIII a. architektūrinė ir profesionaliosios dailės ornamentika tyrinėta nereguliariai, todėl mažai žinoma apie šio laikotarpio grafinių prototipų įtaką LDK dailei: tyrinėtojai negali pasakyti kokios italų, olandų ar vokiečių knygų iliustracijos, kokie architektūriniai traktatai ir ornamentiniai raštai buvo naudoti. 2006-2007 m. Hozijaus (Hosius) šeimos namuose Vilniuje buvo atrasta ornamentinė sienų tapyba, atlikta temperos technika. Tai viena iš dviejų didžiausių didelio mastelio kompozicijų, nutapytų miestiečių namuose Lietuvoje. Tačiau nėra išlikę archyvinės informacijos apie šią tapybą ir nežinoma kas buvo užsakovas. Kai kurios šio objekto detalės neišlikę. Atlikus sunykusios tapybos analizę nepavyko atskleisti jokių ornamentinių motyvų ar jų derinių, kurie galėjo būti populiarūs po renesanso ir manierizmo epochos. Tapybos koloritas, reljefinė lipdyba ir tapymo maniera paskatino tyrinėtojus freską datuoti XVII pradžia (iki 1630 m.). Tačiau pagal naudotą ikonografiją freska gali būti priskiriama renesansui ir manierizmui. Daroma prielaida, jog ornamentinė tapyba greičiausiai buvo sukurta prieš XVII a. vidurio sugriovimus ir Vilniaus gaisrus. During the 20th century, researchers in Lithuania as well as in other countries demonstrated a systematic interest preferably in archaeological ornaments or folk art patterns. So far, the 16th-18th century's architectural and professional fine arts ornamentation has been researched only sporadically. Very little is known about the influence of the 16th-18th century's graphic prototypes on fine arts of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Today we cannot be sure as which Italian, Dutch or German book illustrations, which architectural tractates and which ornamental prints the artists could have used. In 2006-07 a wall painting in the distemper technique based on ornamental patterns was found in the House of the Hosius (Hozijus, Hozius, Hozjusz) Family in Vilnius. This is one of the two oldest (known for the present time) large-scale compositions painted in burgher houses in Lithuanian towns. There is no archival information about this painting and it is unknown, who the client was. Certain parts of this object have not survived. The analysis of die painting of the House of Hosius has not revealed any ornamental motives or their combinations, which could have become popular after the Renaissance and Mannerism epoch. Painting colouring, relief modelling and, most importantly, the manner of painting also encourage the dating of the fresco approximately before 1630. As a result, if to take iconography into consideration, the fresco could be attributed to the Renaissance and Mannerism; whereas, if to refer to the criteria of the painting style, it could also be attributed to the Early Baroque. It was certainly created before the demolitions and fires of Vilnius of the middle 17t h century.

Tyrinėjant kultūros istoriją dažniausiai paliečiami itin svarbūs įvykiai ar reiškiniai, lėmę konkrečių formacijų atsiradimą bei plėtrą. Akcentuojama, kas iškilu, tipinga, tapo sklaidos ar modifikacijų centru. Tačiau siekiant išsamesnio epochos, reiškinio suvokimo, privalu atlikti „kultūrinio sluoksnio“ analizę, t. y. būtina komunikacinė archeologija; reikia įvardyti reliktus, parodančius reiškinių funkcionavimo ir recepcijos variacijas. Straipsnyje dėmesys kreipiamas ne į svarbiausias Renesanso Lietuvos bibliotekas ir jų įtaką visuomenės švietimui, bet į spausdinto žodžio sklaidą XVI a. Lietuvos periferijoje, t. y. Žemaitijoje ir Vidurio Lietuvoje, siekiama įžvelgti bibliofilijos apraiškas ir knygos, kaip intelektinio turto, įsisąmoninimą senosios Lietuvos mintijime, atliepusį naujo politikos, pasaulėžiūros ar pasaulėvokos lygmens formavimąsi toli nuo didžiųjų centrų. Straipsnyje pateikta kruopšti, informatyvi Kauno bibliotekose saugomų XV–XVI a. knygų nuosavybės ženklų analizė, atskleidžiamos egzistavusios asmeninės bibliotekos bei tuometinė istorinė situacija. Daroma išvada, kad knygos plitimas Vidurio ir Vakarų Lietuvoje buvo nulemtas visų pirma naujos religijos – krikščionybės – įtvirtinimo, pareikalavusio mokytų žmonių kulto apeigoms atlikti ir sielovadai plisti. Knygos plitimas provincijoje rodo aktyvėjančią šio krašto integraciją į visuomeninį ir politinį valstybės gyvenimą. Asmeninė knyga ir privačios bibliotekos ilgainiui skatino didžiųjų mokslo centrų bibliotekų susiformavimą, ir tai ilgam lėmė šio krašto mentalinę, dvasinę bei literatūrinę įtaką Didžiajai Lietuvai. The article discusses the dissemination of the printed word in the provinces of Samogitia and Central Lithuania in the XVI century. It explores how city residents, landed gentry and clergy of Central and Western Lithuania started their acquaintance with the book. The article also addresses possible ways of obtaining books, bibliophilic nature of private book collections, the migration of personal book collections to the growing libraries of educational centres. Most attention is accorded to the XV-XVI centuries' books with ownership-testifying inscriptions, which are kept in libraries of the present-day Kaunas. Some interesting copies of such books have marginals written by famous upholders of Lithuanian culture. The author concludes that 1) the spread of books in Central and Western Lithuania was predetermined by the establishment of the new religion – Christianity; 2) the European orientation of the new nobility encouraged the need of higher education, which was instrumental for the appearance of the personal collections amassed either for the purposes of study or post-study; 3) the expansion of literacy among the lower classes made the book important as both an educational aid and a possession; 4) the spread of books in the provinces demonstrated a more active integration of the provinces of Lithuania into social and political life of the state.

Julijonas Lindė-Dobilas žinomas kaip pirmojo lietuvių psichologinio ir socialinio romano, daugelio literatūrinės kritikos ir estetikos darbų autorius, ilgametis Panevėžio gimnazijos direktorius. Nepaisant visų savo nuopelnų, tinkamo įvertinimo Dobilas nesusilaukė. 1936 m. literatūros istorijos autorius Vincas Mykolaitis- Putinas neskiria nė vienos eilutės Dobilui, o Juozas Keliuotis teigia, kad kritikai neminėjo, o skaitytojai net nežinojo tokį rašytoją esant. Dobilas kaip asmenybė susiformavo ne Lietuvoje, o gilias liuteroniškas tradicijas turinčioje Latvijoje, kurioje jis ne tik baigė vokiečių gimnaziją, bet ir kunigavo apie 15 metų. Taip susiformavo savitas Dobilo kultūrinis mentalitetas, kuris susipriešino su Lietuvoje dominuojančia pozityvistine ir materialistine pasaulėvoka. Metodologinėmis nuostatomis Dobilas artimas vokiečių "dvasios istorijos" mokyklai. Dobilas sukuria idealistinę kultūrinę lietuvių tautos koncepciją, kurios pamatinė idėja reiškė, kad dabartinė kultūros būsena yra ne kas kita, kaip tautos dvasios objektyvacija. Norėdama pasiekti Vakarų kultūros lygį Lietuva turi eiti vieninteliu įmanomu keliu - brandinti savo tautos dvasią, kuri kol kas generuoja tik gana primityvias formas. Šiame kelyje Lietuva privalės pervertinti kai kurias vertybes, tarp jų ir senovės kultą ar pasididžiavimą savo kalbos senumu. Tauta atgims per artojėlio (valstiečio) dvasios kultūrinimą. Toks konceptualiai nuoseklus požiūris į meno, o per jas ir į tautos dvasios problemas lietuvių kultūroje buvo ne tik naujas, bet psichologiškai ir sunkiai priimtinas, jau vien dėl to, kad Dobilas nežadėjo greito tautos pabudimo. Julijonas Lindė-Dobilas is well-known as the author of the first Lithuanian psychological and social novel, numerous literary criticism and aesthetic works, the long-time director of Panevėžys Gymnasium. Contemporaries described him as an extremely spiritual, introvert man, the most conscious preacher of idealism, who searched for manifestations of Lithuanian character, and sought to understand Lithuanian literature in the context of the world literature. Despite all his merits, Dobilas has been underestimated. Putinas, the author of the History of Literature published in 1936, does not dedicate a line to Dobilas, while Keliuotis claims that Dobilas was not a popular writer, because literary critics have not quoted him, have not analysed him, while ordinary readers have not known that such writer ever existed. Such literary isolation of Dobilas could be explained because Dobilas as a personality was formed not in Lithuania, but in Latvia, which had deep Lutheran traditions, where he not only graduated from German gymnasium, but also was a minister for about 15 years. According to methodological attitudes, Dobilas is close to the German school of the "history of the spirit". Dobilas created an idealistic cultural conception of Lithuanian nation, the underlying idea of which declared that "not the substance gives forms to the spirit, but the spirit per se creates it for itself. In order to reach Western cultural state, Lithuania has to go down only one possible road - to nurture its nation's spirit, which so far generates only fairly primitive forms. On this road Lithuania will have to re-evaluate some values, among them the antiquity cult or pride in its archaic language. The nation will be reborn through the cultivation of the ploughman's (peasant's) spirit. Such conceptually consistent approach to art and through it to the nation's spiritual problems in Lithuanian culture was not only new but also psychologically hardly acceptable because Dobilas did not promise the quick rebirth of the nation.

Tyrimo objektas – humanisto, pedagogo, literato Saliamono Risinskio laiškų rinkinys Epistolarum Solomonis Pantheri, libri duo (Altdorphii: In officina typographica Nicolai Talaei, 1587). Tai pirmas epistolografinis rinkinys XVI a., parengtas Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės autoriaus. Analizuojant jo sudėtį, turinį, stilistinę raišką, aptariama Risinskio pasaulėžiūra, pasaulėvoka, kūrybiškumas, erudicija ir kt. Lyginant su kitais Vakarų Europos ir LDK epistoliniais tekstais, siekiama parodyti Risinskio veikalo savitumą, originalumą, o kartu išryškinti idėjas, apmąstymus, nuostatas bei kūrybinės raiškos formas, būdingas renesansinės Europos humanistinei, intelektualinei, kultūrinei erdvei The work Epistolarum Solomonis Pantheri, libri duo by the humanist, man of letters and educator Saliamonas Risinskis (Lat. Solomo Pantherus, Rysinius, ca. 1560-1625), published in Altdorf in 1587, is the first epistolographic collection, edited by the author of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, much different from other works of this nature by the diversity of its themes, the originality of the contents and the style. Early letters of Risinskis's reflect the environment he lived in, his worldview, his interests, his dreams, his relationships at home and abroad. They also add to biographical knowledge and show the talent, creativity, superior intelligence and education of their creator. This letter collection contains a whole arsenal of humanist ideas and themes, which was characteristic for the humanists, philosophers and scientists of the Enlightenment and is equally relevant for people of our times. In the letters, Risinskis ponders on the nature of man, the meaning of life, other ethical, social and existential issues. He discusses the concept of friendship, the importance of science, the power of the mind, literary matters, the issue of talent, the relationship between the poet and the critic; he puts forward humanist pedagogical ideas, describes travels etc. The letters discussed in the present article are the literary debut of Risinskis; they also are a mature declaration of the ideas of an educated, thinking, doubting and creative person

Straipsnis skirtas apžvelgti XVIII a. poetikose teiktą sektinų autorių kanoną ir įvertinti jo sąsajas su to meto lotyniškąja progine kūryba. Problemai tirti pasitelkta prancūzų jėzuito Juozapo Juvencijaus (Iosephus Iuvencius, Joseph de Jouvancy) poetika Institutiones poeticae et rhetoricae', vienas iš populiariausių to meto teorinių darbų, kuriuo buvo naudotasi tiek jėzuitų, tiek ir pijorų mokyklose. Pažymėtina, kad poetikoje pateikto skaityti ir imituoti tinkamų kūrėjų sąrašo personalijos visiškai sutampa su analogišku sąrašu, esančiu to paties autoriaus parengtame metodiniame leidinyje De ratione discendi et docendi, skirtame jėzuitų mokyklų mokytojams. Siekiant atskleisti XVIII a. antrojoje pusėje prasidėjusius, o jo pabaigoje išryškėjusius literatūrinės estetikos kitimus ir literatūros raidos tendencijas bei šių veiksnių formuojamus kanono pokyčius, pasiremta pijoro retorikos profesoriaus Pilypo Nerio Golianskio (Filip Nereusz Golariski) darbu, kiek ir kaip literatūrinėje kūryboje buvo realizuoti poetikose išdėstyti teoriniai teiginiai, atsakymų ieškota apžvelgiant XVIII a. Vilniaus akademijos spaustuvės lotyniškuosius proginius leidinius, taip pat šiuo aspektu vertinant pijorų proginės poezijos rinktinę Zebranie rymow, išėjusią Vilniaus pijorų spaustuvėje. The literary taste of the 18* century authors was principally formed by the school tradition of humanist education based primarily on the study of ancient literature. It was organically connected with the genre definitions and evaluations of various ancient prosaists and poets, presented in works on poetics and rhetoric of the times. The authors of poetics and rhetoric, generalizing from theoretical experience of the earlier ages and ever pursuing tasks of school education, formed a certain literary communis opinio or the canon of authors deserving of imitation. Some of the most significant theoretic works of the times are the poetics by the Jesuit Juventius Institutiones poeticae et rhetoricae and the study by a professor of rhetoric, the Piarist Golariski. The list of standard authors produced in Juventius's poetics accorded the most attention to ancient authors. Meanwhile, Golariski's work, reflecting the literary aesthetics of the Enlightenment, included in the list Golariski's contemporaries or earlier authors having written in his native language, i.e. Polish. The overview of the fictional literature of the 18th century in Latin demonstrates that the 18* century writers' attitude mainly conformed to the authors canon defined in the poetics. Quoting ancient authors and later poets, the 18* century writers displayed their extensive erudition; quotations were carefully chosen as to flow into the text, to enrich and diversify it, to emphasize the essential motives of the content. Apart from the authors mentioned above, quoted were such poets and prosaists as Claudius Claudianus, Pliny the Younger, Marcus Antonius Muretus, Lucanus, Homer, Venantius Fortunatus, Sarbievius (the odes), Virgil, Propertius, Statius (silvae), Seneca, Sallustius, Manilius, Horace, Anacreon, Ausonius, Cicero, Francesco Petrarca, Albert Ines, Jacob Balde, Jan Kwiatkiewicz, Szymon Starowolski and others.

Straipsnyje aptariamos tokio ilgaamžiškumo priežastys – stereotipo gajumas, retorinės kultūros ypatumai, „ilgųjų Viduramžių“ fenomenas ir kt. Apžvelgus, ką sako pacituotas Baltramiejaus tekstas, pastebima, kad tarp pelkių, miškų ir pagonybės būta šiandien jau menkai suvokiamo ryšio. Stereotipinis LDK vaizdas buvo piešiamas Silvijaus Piccolominio „De Europa“, (1458) iš kurio vienu ar kitu pavidalu pateko į Hartmanno Schedelio (1493), Marko Antonijaus Sabeliko (1498) kronikas, Sebastijono Mūnsterio kosmografiją ir Gerardo Merkatoriaus atlasą bei kitų autorių darbus. Lietuvos vaizdas regimas ir kituose Europoje išpopuliarėjusiuose tekstuose – Motiejaus Miechoviečio „Traktate apie dvi Sarmatijas“, Zigmanto Herberšteino kelionės į Moskoviją užrašuose. Straipsnyje apžvelgiami analizuojamu aspektu svarbūs šaltiniai: kartografiniai paminklai, LDK metraščiai, kronikos, Istorijos, literatūros kūriniai. Apibendrinama, kad XIII-XV a. Lietuvai prigijusi „miškų ir pelkių krašto“ charakteristika turėjo nedviprasmišką „barbarų šalies“ konotaciją. Lietuvių pastangos įveikti tokį požiūrį pastebimos jau XVI a. – jas vainikavo M. K. Radvilos Našlaitėlio rūpesčiu XVI a. pabaigoje pradėtas rengti LDK žemėlapis, kuris buvo išspausdintas XVII a. pradžioje. An extract from Franciscan Bartholomew’s popular work of the 13th c. “On the properties of things” which describes Lithuania as “a land of forests and swamps” is chosen as a point of departure for the article. Containing new details, this description was repeated by various European authors until the very 17th c. The article discusses reasons for such longevity, such as vitality of the stereotype, peculiarities of rhetorical culture and the phenomenon of “long Middle Ages”. Examination of quoted Bartholomew’s text shows that there was a relation between swamps, forests and paganism which is poorly perceived today. The stereotypical picture of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was painted by Silvio Piccolomini in his “De Europa” (1458), from which in one form or another it found its way into chronicles by Hartmann Schedel (1493) and Marco Antonio Sabelico (1498), the cosmography by Sebastian Münster, the atlas of Gerardus Mercator and works by other authors. The image of Lithuania is also displayed in other European popular texts, such as “Tractatus de Duabus Sarmatiis” by Mathias de Mechovia and “Rerum Moscoviticarum Commentarii” by Sigismund von Herberstein. The article looks at the following significant sources: cartographic monuments, annuals of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, chronicles, historical and literary works. To conclude, characterisation of Lithuania in the 13th–15th c. as “a land of forests and swamps” had an unambiguous connotation of “the country of barbarians”. Efforts of Lithuanians to change this attitude are noticeable already in the 16th c. – they were crowned with the map of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the drawing of which began on the initiative of M. K. “the Orphan” Radziwiłł in the late 16th c. and which was printed in the early 17th c.

Straipsnyje apžvelgiama lietuvių istoriografija, skirta Lietuvos sąsajoms su Italija. Šios dvi geografiškai tolimos Europos valstybės puoselėjo glaudžius abipusius kultūrinius ir dvasinius ryšius. Neabejotina, kad ryšiai su Italija turėjo svarbią reikšmę Lietuvos kultūros ir meno raidai. Daugelis Lietuvos, Lenkijos ir Italijos mokslininkų domėjosi vertingu istoriniu paveldu, susiformavusiu nuo vėlyvųjų viduramžių iki šių dienų. Plati šios tematikos Lietuvos istorijos ir kultūros tyrinėjimų kryptis, apimanti skirtingas humanitarinių mokslų sritis, lietuviškoje istoriografijoje ėmė formuotis tarpukariu. Vėliau tyrinėjimai įgijo platų įvairialypį studijų spektrą, kuris išėjo net už Lietuvos ribų. Apžvelgiami Lietuvos ir Šventojo Sosto santykių, šventųjų kulto, renesansinio ir barokinio meno, humanizmo raidos, lietuvių kilmės jaunuolių studijų Italijoje XIV-XVIII a. tyrimai, itališkų XVI-XVII a. tekstų studijos, itališka tematika senosios Lietuvos raštijos tyrimuose, italų meno, muzikos, šalių prekybinių ryšių, kultūrinio ir mokslinio bendradarbiavimo ir kt. tyrimai. Istorikų, kultūros bei senosios literatūros ir meno tyrinėtojų, kalbininkų tyrimai tik patvirtina, kad Lietuva ir Italija niekada nebuvo praradusios ryšio: kultūrinio, meninio ar politinio-diplomatinio. Net sunkiausiu Lietuvos politinės egzistencijos laikotarpiu, neturint tiesioginių ryšių su Italija ar priėjimo prie jos archyvų, ši tema lietuvių istoriografijoje atsiskleisdavo pačiais įvairiausiais aspektais, pabrėždavo per šimtmečius susiklosčiusį gilų kultūrinį, o kartu ir diplomatinį ryšį tarp šių valstybių. The article overviews the Lithuanian historiography, dedicated to the relations between Lithuania and Italy. The said two countries, which are not close to each other geographically, nurtured close cultural and spiritual relations. Without any doubt the relations with Italy had significance to development of culture and art in Lithuania. Most Lithuanian, Polish and Italian scientists took interest in the valuable historical heritage, which shaped from the late Middle Ages till the present day. The wide direction of studies of the history and culture of Lithuania in terms of the subject, covering different areas of humanities, commenced its formation in the Lithuanian historiography during the interwar period. Later on the studies acquired a wide and diverse spectrum, which even exceeded the limits of Lithuania. The article overviews the studies of relations between Lithuania and the Holy See, the cult of saints, the Renaissance and the Baroque art, the development of humanism, the studies of young people of Lithuanian origin in Italy in the 14th – 18th centuries, the Italian texts, written in the 16th – 17th centuries, the Italian subjects in the studies of old Lithuanian writing, the Italian art and music, the trade relations between the two countries, the cultural and scientific cooperation, etc.. The studies, performed by historians, scholars of culture, old literature and art and linguists only evidence that Lithuania and Italy never lost their cultural, art related and political – diplomatic relations. Even in the hardest period of Lithuania’s political existence, with no direct communication with Italy or access to its archives, the subject revealed itself in Lithuanian historiography in most diverse aspects and emphasized deep cultural and diplomatic relations between the two states, which were shaped during the time period of several centuries.
