Background and Aims Androdioecy, the co-occurrence of males and hermaphrodites, is a rare reproductive system. Males can be maintained if they benefit from a higher male fitness than hermaphrodites, referred to as male advantage. Male advantage can emerge from increased fertility owing to resource reallocation. However, empirical studies usually compare sexual phenotypes over a single flowering season, thus ignoring potential cumulative effects over successive seasons in perennials. In this study, we quantify various components of male fertility advantage, both within and between seasons, in the long-lived perennial shrub Phillyrea angustifolia (Oleaceae). Although, owing to a peculiar diallelic self-incompatibility system and female sterility mutation strictly associated with a breakdown of incompatibility, males do not need fertility advantage to persist in this species, this advantage remains an important determinant of their equilibrium frequency. Methods A survey of >1000 full-sib plants allowed us to compare males and hermaphrodites for several components of male fertility. Individuals were characterized for proxies of pollen production and vegetative growth. By analysing maternal progeny, we compared the siring success of males and hermaphrodites. Finally, using a multistate capture–recapture model we assessed, for each sexual morph, how the intensity of flowering in one year impacts next-year growth and reproduction. Key Results Males benefitted from a greater vegetative growth and flowering intensity. Within one season, males sired twice as many seeds as equidistant, compatible hermaphroditic competitors. In addition, males more often maintained intense flowering over successive years. Finally, investment in male reproductive function appeared to differ between the two incompatibility groups of hermaphrodites. Conclusion Males, by sparing the cost of female reproduction, have a higher flowering frequency and vegetative growth, both of which contribute to male advantage over an individual lifetime. This suggests that studies analysing sexual phenotypes during only single reproductive periods are likely to provide inadequate estimates of male advantage in perennials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Two widely cultivated annual buckwheat crops, Fagopyrum esculentum and F. tataricum, differ from each other in both rutin concentration and reproductive system. However, the underlying genetic mechanisms remain poorly elucidated. Results Here, we report the first haplotype-resolved chromosome-level genome assemblies of the two species. Two haplotype genomes of F. esculentum were assembled as 1.23 and 1.19 Gb with N50 = 9.8 and 12.4 Mb, respectively; the two haplotype genomes of F. tataricum were 453.7 and 446.2 Mb with N50 = 50 and 30 Mb, respectively. We further annotated protein-coding genes of each haplotype genome based on available gene sets and 48 newly sequenced transcriptomes. We found that more repetitive sequences, especially expansion of long terminal repeat retrotransposons (LTR-RTs), contributed to the large genome size of F. esculentum. Based on the well-annotated sequences, gene expressions, and luciferase experiments, we identified the sequence mutations of the promoter regions of two key genes that are likely to have greatly contributed to the high rutin concentration and selfing reproduction in F. tartaricum. Conclusions Our results highlight the importance of high-quality genomes to identify genetic mutations underlying phenotypic differences between closely related species. F. tataricum may have been experienced stronger selection than F. esculentum through choosing these two non-coding alleles for the desired cultivation traits. These findings further suggest that genetic manipulation of the non-coding promoter regions could be widely employed for breeding buckwheat and other crops.

The Cichorium genus offers a unique opportunity to study the sporophytic selfincompatibility (SSI) system, being composed of species characterized by highly efficient self-incompatibility (e.g., C. intybus) and complete self-compatibility (e.g., C. endivia). To this end, the chicory genome was used to map seven previously identified SSI locus-associated markers. The region containing the S-locus was therefore restricted to an ~4 M bp window on chromosome 5. Among the genes predicted in this region, MDIS1 INTERACTING RECEPTOR LIKE KINASE 2 (ciMIK2) was particularly promising as a candidate for SSI. Its ortholog in Arabidopsis (atMIK2) is involved in pollen-stigma recognition reactions, and its protein structure is similar to that of S-receptor kinase (SRK), a key component of the SSI system in the Brassica genus. The amplification and sequencing of MIK2 in chicory and endive accessions revealed two contrasting scenarios. In C. endivia, MIK2 was fully conserved even when comparing different botanical varieties (i.e., smooth and curly endive). In C. intybus, 387 polymorphic positions and 3 INDELs were identified when comparing accessions of different biotypes all belonging to the same botanical variety (i.e., radicchio). The polymorphism distribution throughout the gene was uneven, with hypervariable domains preferentially localized in the LRR-rich extracellular region, putatively identified as the receptor domain. The gene was hypothesized to be under positive selection, as the nonsynonymous mutations were more than double the synonymous ones (dN/dS = 2.17). An analogous situation was observed when analyzing the first 500 bp of the MIK2 promoter: no SNPs were observed among the endive samples, whereas 44 SNPs and 6 INDELs were detected among the chicory samples. Further analyses are needed to confirm the role of MIK2 in SSI and to demonstrate whether the 23 species-specific nonsynonymous SNPs in the CDS and/or the species-specific 10 bp-INDEL found in a CCAAT box region of the promoter are responsible for the contrasting sexual behaviors of chicory and endive. The chemotherapeutic drug 5-fluorouracil (5FU) is frequently used to treat a wide range of solid malignant tumors, such as colorectal, pancreatic, gastric, breast, and head and neck cancers. Its antitumoral effects are achieved by interfering with the synthesis of RNA and DNA and by inhibiting thymidylate synthase in both malignant and non-malignant cells. Therefore, it can be responsible for severe toxicities in crucial body organs, including heart, liver, kidney, and reproductive system. Given the fact that 5FU-induced reproductive toxicity may limit the clinical application of this drug, in this study, we aimed to discuss the main locations and mechanisms of the 5FU-induced reproductive toxicity. Initially, we discussed the impact of 5FU on the male reproductive system, which leads to damage of the seminiferous epithelial cells and the development of vacuoles in Sertoli cells. Although no noticeable changes occur at the histopathological level, there is a decrease in the weight of the prostate. Additionally, 5FU causes significant abnormalities in spermatogenesis, including germ cell shedding, spermatid halo formation, polynucleated giant cells, and decreased sperm count. Finally, in females, 5FU-induced reproductive toxicity is characterized by the presence of atretic secondary and antral follicles with reduced numbers of growing follicles, ovarian weight, and maturity impairment. Synthetic amorphous silica (SAS) consists of agglomerates and aggregates of primary particles in the nanorange (<100 nm) and it is the E551 authorized food additive. The potential risks for human health associated to dietary exposure to SAS are not completely assessed; in particular, data on male and female reproductive systems are lacking. A 90-day oral toxicity study with pyrogenic SAS nanomaterial NM-203 was carried out on the basis of the OECD test guideline 408 in the frame of the NANoREG project. Adult Sprague-Dawley rats of both sexes were orally treated for 90 days with 0, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 mg SAS/kg bw per day. Dose levels were selected to be as close as possible to the expected human exposure to food additive E551. The present paper provides specific information on potential effects on male and female reproductive systems, through the evaluation of serum biomarkers, sperm count, histopathological analysis of testis, epididymis, ovary and uterus and real-time PCR on uterus; potential genotoxic alterations were evaluated by comet assay on testis, sperm and ovary. NM-203 did not induce histophatological and genotoxic effects in male reproductive system. In female rats, ovary is not target of NM-203 and only tissue-specific effects on uterus were recorded up to 10 mg/kg bw per day. To our best knowledge, this is the first study providing data on male and female reproductive systems after long-term, repeated oral exposure at dose levels close to dietary human exposure, which identifies a limited concern only for female reproductive health. Island plants provide special opportunities for the study of evolution and ecology. In field and greenhouse studies we characterized a model reproductive system for Plocama pendula , endemic to the Canary Islands. This species has a complicated and not immediately obvious reproductive system. Pollination is biotic, and all flowers are morphologically hermaphroditic, but half of the plants characteristically bear flowers with nectar, pistils with reflexed stigmatic lobes and pollen-less anthers (i.e. they are functionally female flowers). The other half bear nectar-less flowers with abundant pollen and full-sized pistils that mostly have un-reflexed stigmatic lobes (i.e. they are hermaphroditic flowers functioning mostly as males). However, experiments show these pollen-bearing flowers to be self-compatible. Thus, the functionally male flowers have a breeding system that allows selfing in limited circumstances, but the functionally male flowers produce far fewer fruits than do functionally female flowers. With morphologically gynodioecious, functionally largely dioecious flowers, sometimes capable of selfing, the reproductive system of this species could be labelled as 'leaky' in many respects. Thus, we propose that P. pendula has colonized new habitats and persists in substantial populations at least in part because it manifests a reproductive system that is a model for successfully balancing the often-conflicting evolutionary demands of colonization, establishment and persistence. Abstract Background The swimming crab Portunus trituberculatus is one of the most commonly farmed crustaceans in China. As one of the most widely known and high-value edible crabs, it crab supports large crab fishery and aquaculture in China. Only large and sexually mature crabs can provide the greatest economic benefits, suggesting the considerable effect of reproductive system development on fishery. Studies are rarely conducted on the molecular regulatory mechanism underlying the development of the reproductive system during the mating embrace stage in this species. This study aims to evaluate a reproductive systems augmented reality (AR) application for use in sexual health education. AR material included learner interactivity and a 3D video. Sixteen counselor candidates voluntarily registered to the sexual health class. A Reproductive Systems Questionnaire and an AR interview form were used to collect data. The participants were evaluated with a pretest, post-test and retention test. A significant improvement from pretest to post-test indicated that the AR application enhanced participants' knowledge of reproductive organs and their positions. Reproductive systems are life attributes important in defining the demography and genetic constitution of invasive alien species populations. We describe the phenology, floral behavior and floral visitors in Mexican populations of Leonotis nepetifolia considered invasive in America, Asia and Oceania. The mating system was determined through pollination experiments and, with a morphological analysis of flowers (outcrossing index, OCI) and pollen/ovule ratio, the breeding system was evaluated. Germination of 1 and 2‐year‐old seeds was tested to assess the potential characteristics of germination. Leonotis nepetifolia was reproductive for 7 months (June to December) and tended towards a specific season during autumn. Anthesis lasted 36 hr with protogyny and no hercogamy, with floral visitors of Apodiformes, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera and Thysanoptera. Pollination experiments indicated a mixed mating system, whereas the OCI and the pollen/ovule ratio pointed towards a facultative xenogamous breeding system. Seed production was high (1,445 ± 132 seeds/plant); the seeds had potential longevity and were neutral photoblastic. One‐year‐old seeds germinated slightly later (x¯ = 2.6 ± 0.11 days) than 2‐year‐old seeds (x¯ = 1.9 ± 0.02 days), both synchronously (IS1yr = 0.88 ± 0.03 and IS2yr = 0.82 ± 0.02). Germination percentage for 1‐year‐old seeds was lower (55.33 ± 4.40%) than that of 2‐year‐old seeds (94.18 ± 0.59%), suggesting a potential longevity of the seeds in an optimal environment. Reproductive characteristics, such as wide reproductive period, mixed breeding system, copious seed production, seeds with potential longevity, and quick and synchronic germination in different light conditions, favor the invasive capacity of Leonotis nepetifolia. The reproductive systems of invasive species play a key role in determining their geographical distributions. Oxalis pes-caprae is a clonal, polyploid, heterostylous, plant native to South Africa, but now invasive in all major Mediterranean climatic regions. Here, we extend earlier surveys in the Western Mediterranean basin of floral morph ratios, reproductive traits and ploidy level to include populations from South Africa and introduced regions of Australia, California and Chile. We sampled a total of 104 populations, 33 in South Africa, 29 in Australia, 27 in California and 15 in Chile and collected data on floral morph representation (trimorphic, dimorphic, monomorphic), flower size, fruit set, and ploidy level using flow cytometry. There were significant differences among regions in floral morph structure of populations, reproductive traits and ploidy level. Populations in South Africa were exclusively tristylous and largely tetraploid (4x); Australian populations were mostly pentaploid (5x, 65.5%), comprised exclusively of the short-styled morph, with the remaining populations either dimorphic or trimorphic. Populations in California and Chile were comprised exclusively of the 5x short-styled morph. Fruit set varied dramatically among populations with no fruit produced in 5x populations. Our study demonstrates striking geographical variation among regions in reproductive systems ranging from a mixture of sexual and clonal reproduction in the native range to exclusively clonal propagation in some introduced regions. The urogenital system of male squamates consists of the testis, testicular ducts, and sexual segment of the kidney. These structures undergo seasonal variation, and their morphology is variable across taxa. Despite multiple studies examining the morphology of the various components of the reproductive system, few studies have examined squamates in sympatry. The purpose of this study was to investigate the morphology and seasonal variation of the reproductive system in two taxa that are sympatric with one another, Anolis carolinensis and Sceloporus undulatus, from southeastern Louisiana. Specimens were collected monthly for an entire year and processed for histological and ultrastructural analysis. Both species have a single rete testis leading from the testis to the ductuli efferentes, which leads into the proximal portion of the epididymis. The rete testis consists of a simple squamous epithelium with irregularly shaped nuclei, the ductuli efferentes consists of a ciliated simple cuboidal epithelium, and the epididymis a pseudostratified columnar epithelium. No differences were observed in the morphology of the urogenital systems between taxa but phenological variation was observed in terms of the tissue development for reproduction. Anolis carolinensis has an extended active period and two separated periods of maximal activity evidenced by two peaks in the ductuli efferentes epithelial height and tubular diameter (March and July) whereas Sceloporus undulatus only had a single peak occurring in June. These results suggest that reproductive morphology may be conserved at taxonomic levels above family level, and reproductive activity may be constrained phylogenetically and is not solely dependent on environmental factors, at least in terms of geographic range, though it is acknowledged that microhabitats may play a major role in cyclicity of reproductive events. Future studies examining species at various taxonomic levels, as well as species in sympatry, will provide additional insight into hypotheses concerning abiotic factors and reproductive biology. Molluscs are the most diverse group in respect of sexual systems and strategies. They can be dioecious with separate sexes or hermaphroditic. Within hermaphroditism, it is possible to distinguish a number of modifications of this type of reproduction, such as protandry, protogyny, sex reversal, or protandry with some overlap. It is thought that dioecy was ancestral because it occurs in most classes of molluscs. Hermaphroditism evolved independently several times, and sequential and simultaneous hermaphroditism are more closely related to each other than to dioecy. This publication presents a general review of sexual systems and strategies in terrestrial gastropods with special emphasis on mating, fertilization, presence of love darts, reproductive strategies (semelparity vs. iteroparity) and modes (oviparity, ovoviviparity, viviparity), production of eggs and egg cannibalism.

Sperm maturation, as a process through which spermatozoa acquire the ability for motility activation and fertilization, is well‐known for many groups of animals. This process takes place in a taxon‐specific manner in different parts of male reproductive tract. In contrast to most fish with external fertilization, a large number of animals have internal fertilization where transit through the epididymis of the male reproductive tract is necessary for the completion of sperm maturation. Although Chondrichthyes are fishes, they exhibit internal fertilization and possess specific male genital anatomy that resembles mammals. The existence of sperm maturation in the epididymis of cartilaginous fishes has been proposed but has yet to be confirmed. In this study, we used mature ocellate river stingrays Potamotrygon motoro, as a representative of Chondrichthyes, collected during the natural spawning period and evaluated sperm motility parameters during transit through the male reproductive tract, and upon contact with uterine fluid. Our data demonstrate that spermatozoa acquire motility after transit through the epididymis and are stored in a motile state within a specific organ – the seminal vesicles. Moreover, these motile spermatozoa are able to increase their velocity under the influence of uterine fluid in the female reproductive tract. Sexually mature ocellate river stingrays (Potamotrygon motoro, representative of Chondrichthyes) possess specific features of male gametes: (1) their spermatozoa acquire motility after leaving the testes during the transit through the epididymis; (2) thereafter spermatozoa are stored in a motile state within a specific male organ – the seminal vesicles; and (3) these motile spermatozoa are able to change their motility parameters under the influence of uterine fluid in the female reproductive tract. Based on the changes in these parameters during sperm transit through the male reproductive tract and upon contact with uterine fluid, we have confirmed the occurrence of epididymal sperm maturation and suggested the occurrence of capacitation stage in ocellate river stingrays. Background: Anticancer agents induce a variety of adverse effects when administered to cancer patients. Busulfan is a known antileukemia agent. When administered for treatment of leukemia in young patients, busulfan could cause damage to the male reproductive system as one of its adverse effects, resulting in sterility. Methods: We investigated the effects of Korean Red Ginseng extract (KRGE) on busulfan-induced damage and/or dysfunction of the male reproductive system. Results: We found that administration of busulfan to mice: decreased testis weight; caused testicular histological damage; reduced the total number of sperm, sperm motility, serum testosterone concentration; and eventually, litter size. Preadministration of KRGE partially attenuated various busulfan-induced damages to the male reproductive system. These results indicate that KRGE has a protective effect against busulfan-induced damage to the male reproduction system. Conclusion: The present study shows a possibility that KRGE could be applied as a useful agent to prevent or protect the male reproductive system from the adverse side effects induced by administration of anticancer agents such as busulfan.

Abstract: Stabilizing selection around a fixed phenotypic optimum is expected to disfavor sexual reproduction, since asexually reproducing organisms can maintain a higher fitness at equilibrium, while sex disrupts combinations of compensatory mutations. This conclusion rests on the assumption that mutational effects on phenotypic traits are unbiased, that is, mutation does not tend to push phenotypes in any particular direction. In this article, we consider a model of stabilizing selection acting on an arbitrary number of polygenic traits coded by bialellic loci, and show that mutational bias may greatly reduce the mean fitness of asexual populations compared with sexual ones in regimes where mutations have weak to moderate fitness effects. Indeed, mutation and drift tend to push the population mean phenotype away from the optimum, this effect being enhanced by the low effective population size of asexual populations. In a second part, we present results from individual‐based simulations showing that positive rates of sex are favored when mutational bias is present, while the population evolves toward complete asexuality in the absence of bias. We report on how a long-term study of the reproductive biology of the Critically Endangered Schiedea adamantis (Caryophyllaceae), one of Hawai‘i's rarest plant species, was leveraged for conservation purposes. Our major goals were to provide seeds with the greatest genetic variation possible for reintroduction and to ensure that both female and hermaphroditic plants of this wind-pollinated species were reintroduced in a manner that maximized both outcrossing and seed production. Schiedea adamantis was one of the first Hawaiian plant species listed under the Endangered Species Act (USA). The species has been studied intensively to test hypotheses addressing the evolution of breeding systems. Information on outcrossing levels and the extent of inbreeding depression was integrated into ongoing reintroduction efforts. Population size peaked in 1994, when 267 flowering individuals were found on Lē‘ahi (Diamond Head Crater). By 2016 only 17 flowering individuals were present, with drought and invasive species being possible causes of this decline. Reintroduction attempts in 1998 using genetically diverse seeds were unsuccessful because of drought and a lack of sufficient supplemental irrigation. Additional reintroduction attempts in 2012 and 2014 were more successful because of increased supplemental irrigation. Plants used in reintroductions represent genotypes long since absent in the natural population, and may contain the genetic variability essential for evolutionary responses to climate change and the spread of invasive species. The destruction of many plants reintroduced in 2015 and 2016 by a fire in March 2016 highlights the need for additional restoration areas at Lē‘ahi and elsewhere, and storage of seeds for future use. Background: The swimming crab Portunus trituberculatus is one of the most commonly farmed crustaceans in China. As one of the most widely known and high-value edible crabs, it crab supports large crab fishery and aquaculture in China. Only large and sexually mature crabs can provide the greatest economic benefits, suggesting the considerable effect of reproductive system development on fishery. Studies are rarely conducted on the molecular regulatory mechanism underlying the development of the reproductive system during the mating embrace stage in this species. In this study, we used high-throughput sequencing to sequence all transcriptomes of the P. trituberculatus reproductive system. Results: Transcriptome sequencing of the reproductive system produced 81,688,878 raw reads (38,801,152 and 42,887,726 reads from female and male crabs, respectively). Low-quality (quality <20) reads were trimmed and removed, leaving only high-quality reads (37,020,664 and 41,021,030 from female and male crabs, respectively). A total of 126,188 (female) and 164,616 (male) transcripts were then generated by de novo transcriptome assembly using Trinity. Functional annotation of the obtained unigenes revealed that a large number of key genes and some important pathways may participate in cell proliferation and signal transduction. On the basis of our transcriptome analyses and as confirmed by quantitative real-time PCR, a number of genes potentially involved in the regulation of gonadal development and reproduction of P. trituberculatus were identified: ADRA1B, BAP1, ARL3, and TRPA1. Conclusion: This study is the first to report on the whole reproductive system transcriptome information in stage II of P. trituberculatus gonadal development and provides rich resources for further studies to elucidate the molecular basis of the development of reproductive systems and reproduction in crabs. Background: Reproductive traits are features of a species’ biology that may determine its rarity, as they affect its genetic diversity and structure, as well as its population dynamics. Study species: The rare and threatened species Furcraea parmentieri, whose distribution is limited to the Trans-Mexican volcanic belt. Questions: How is the reproductive phenology of F. parmentieri? Does flower morphology vary between individuals? Does it produce nectar? Which animals visit its flowers? Is it self-compatible? Do the seeds originated via different pollination treatments show differences in their germinability? Study sites and dates: We studied the F. parmentieri from 2007 to 2008, at El Xitle volcano (altitude: 2800 – 3100 m; pine-oak forest), in the south of Mexico City. Methods: Reproductive phenology was recorded through fortnightly visits to the study site. Flowers were collected, flower visitors were recorded and nectar production was measured. An experiment was done which included four treatments: autonomous pollination, geitonogamy, cross pollination, and a control. We measured seed set, fruit set and seed germination in each treatment. Results: Inflorescences started in January and flowering finished in May. Fruit maturation took from May to November. Nectar production was negligible. Flowers were visited by hawkmoths and hummingbirds. Fruit set was very low (ca. 5 %) and we observed self-incompatibility. Conclusions: Fucraeae parmentieri presents a low fruit set due to pollinator limitation. However the population seems to be thriving. The main threat faced by this species is the high land-use change rate along its distribution range, as well as climate change.

Molluscs are the most diverse group in respect of sexual systems and strategies. They can be dioecious with separate sexes or hermaphroditic. Within hermaphroditism, it is possible to distinguish a number of modifications of this type of reproduction, such as protandry, protogyny, sex reversal, or protandry with some overlap. It is thought that dioecy was ancestral because it occurs in most classes of molluscs. Hermaphroditism evolved independently several times, and sequential and simultaneous hermaphroditism are more closely related to each other than to dioecy. This publication presents a general review of sexual systems and strategies in terrestrial gastropods with special emphasis on mating, fertilization, presence of love darts, reproductive strategies (semelparity vs. iteroparity) and modes (oviparity, ovoviviparity, viviparity), production of eggs and egg cannibalism.

Triplaris gardneriana (Polygonaceae) is a dioecious pioneer tree reported as insect-pollinated, despite possessing traits related to anemophily. Here, we analyse the possible roles of insects and wind on the pollination of this species to establish whether the species is ambophilous., We carried out observations of floral biology, as well as on the frequency and behaviour of pollinators visiting flowers in a population of T. gardneriana in the Chaco vegetation of Brazil. We conducted experimental pollinations to determine the maternal fertility of female plants and whether they were pollen-limited, and we also conducted aerobiological experiments to provide evidence of how environmental factors influence atmospheric pollen dispersal., The population comprised an area of approximately 152.000 m2 and was composed of 603 female and 426 male plants (sex ratio = 0.59:0.41). We observed 48 species of insects visiting flowers of T. gardneriana, of which the bees Scaptotrigona depilis and Apis mellifera scutellata were the most effective pollinators. We recorded pollen grains dispersed by wind on 74% of the glass slides placed on females, located at different distances (1-10 m) from male plants., Airborne pollen concentration was negatively correlated with relative humidity and positively correlated with temperature. Our observations and experimental results provide the first evidence that T. gardneriana is an ambophilous species, with pollen dispersal resulting from both animal and wind pollination. This mixed pollination strategy may be adaptive in T. gardneriana providing reproductive assurance during colonisation of sites with different biotic and abiotic conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Shifts in pollination may drive adaptive diversification of reproductive systems within plant lineages. The monophyletic genus Schiedea is a Hawaiian lineage of 32 extant species, with spectacular diversity in reproductive systems. Biotic pollination is the presumed ancestral condition, but this key element of the life history and its role in shaping reproductive systems has remained undocumented. • We observed floral visitors to two species of Schiedea and conducted field experiments to test pollinator effectiveness. We used choice tests to compare attraction of pollinators to species hypothesized to be biotically vs wind-pollinated. • Pseudoschrankia brevipalpis (Erebidae), a recently described moth species known only from O'ahu, visited hermaphroditic Schiedea kaalae and S. hookeri and removed nectar from their unique tubular nectary extensions. Pseudoschrankia brevipalpis effectively pollinates S. kaalae; single visits to emasculated flowers resulted in pollen transfer. In choice tests, P. brevipalpis strongly preferred these hermaphroditic species over two subdioecious species capable of wind pollination. • A shift from biotic to abiotic pollination is clearly implicated in the diversification of reproductive systems within Schiedea. Abundant pollination by a previously unknown native moth in experimental and restored populations suggests the potential for restoration to re-establish native plant-pollinator interactions critical for production of outcrossed individuals with high fitness. This review focuses on the fact that oral disorders are not merely localized to the mouth; in a broader sense, they also have a more significant impact on systemic health. In this review, we tried to bring to the notice various complications of periodontitis on the body's major organ systems. It has also been suggested that there is a potential connection between periodontitis and certain systemic disorders. Reviewing this fascinating topic is necessary. The objective is to create a thorough body of knowledge on the subject that is simple to access, alert medical professionals to the connection between dental health and systemic health, and highlight the necessity of a more thorough incorporation of medical and dental training. Periodontitis is a probable risk factor for various problems connected to the cardiovascular, pulmonary, endocrine, musculoskeletal, central nervous, and reproductive systems. It is a continual likely source of infection. Oral health affects overall health, and if extensive healthcare is ever accomplished, dental health should never be considered a distinct, remote, and lower significant part of health wholly disconnected from quality of life. One should never underestimate oral disorders as being acute and always curable. ABSTRACT Data of six studied Neotropical Anaxagorea species are analyzed and discussed with respect to the population structure, flowering phenology, flower morphology, anthesis, scent emission, thermogenesis, floral visitors, breeding system, fruit-set and seed dispersal. The probably reason for the patchy distribution of small populations of Anaxagorea species within lowland tropical forests is given. A novel explanation of the functional significance of ruminate endosperm is presented. Flowering of the species follows either the annual or the continuous flowering pattern. All studied species have diurnal, two-day lasting, protogynous anthesis; several species have thermogenic flowers. Self-compatibility appears to be the prevailing reproductive system in the genus. However, there is a strong tendency for effecting cross-pollination. Floral scent of Anaxagorea species contains fruit-like components, and the pollinators, primarily Nitidulidae (Colopterus spp.) are attracted by deceit. Strong scenting pollination chambers occur also in most other cantharophilous Annonaceae. Novel floral developments are apparent mainly in fly-, cockroach- and bee-pollinated Annonaceae, which have patterns different from cantharophilous species and exhibit open flowers with reflexed petals, which allow their pollinators to reach and touch the reproductive organs.

Male goats of mating age serologically negative for Toxoplasma gondii were divided into three groups: GI - controls (placebo) (n = 2); GII - infected with 1 × 10(6) tachyzoites (RH strains) (n = 2); and GIII - infected with 2 × 10(5) oocysts (P strains) (n = 2). Clinical, hematology, parasite and serology tests and studies of parasites in the semen through bioassay and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and in reproductive organs (bioassay) were performed to assess toxoplasma infection. Serological titers peaked at 4096 in two animal groups infected with the protozoan. The bioassays allowed an early detection of protozoa in semen samples of tachyzoite-inoculated animals. T. gondii DNA was identified through PCR in the semen in five (Days 5, 7, 28, 49, and 70) and two (both at day 56) different days post-inoculation in GII and GIII animals, respectively. It was also possible to detect T. gondii DNA in reproductive organs (prostate pool, testicles, seminal vesicle and epididymis) of goats inoculated with either tachyzoites or oocysts. The present study suggests the possibility of venereal transmission of T. gondii among goats and it should be further assessed.Caprinos machos, em idade reprodutiva, sorologicamente negativos para Toxoplasma gondii foram distribuídos em três grupos de animais: GI (n = 2) controle (placebo), GII (n = 2) - infectado com 1 × 10(6) taquizoítos (cepa RH) e GIII (n = 2) infectado com 2 × 10(5) oocistos (cepa P). Os títulos sorológicos alcançaram valores máximos de 4096 nos dois grupos de animais infectados. Pela técnica da bioprova, foi possível revelar precocemente a presença do coccídio nas amostras seminais dos animais inoculados com taquizoítos. Pela PCR, foi possível identificar, no sêmen, material genético de T. gondii, em cinco (5º, 7º, 28º, 49º e 70º) e em duas (ambos ao 56º) datas experimentais pós-inoculação dos animais pertencentes aos grupos GII e GIII, respectivamente.Por esta mesma técnica, foi possível ainda isolar material genético deste protozoário, também em amostras teciduais (pool de próstata, testículo, vesícula seminal e epidídimo) dos caprinos inoculados com taquizoítos e oocistos. A presente pesquisa sugere a possibilidade da ocorrência da transmissão sexual do T. gondii na espécie caprina.

Aquatic angiosperms have evolved from a diverse assemblage of terrestrial lineages and exhibit broad variation in morphology, life history, and reproductive systems. This variation reflects evolutionary modifications that have occurred following transitions to aquatic habitats, and adaptation to the wealth of ecological niches that occur in wetland environments. Despite this variation, nearly all perennial aquatic plants share one important feature: propagation through both sexual and clonal reproduction. These contrasting reproductive modes involve the formation of propagules that differ in size, resource status, and genetic identity. Accordingly, the balance between sexual and clonal reproduction has important ecological and evolutionary consequences for dispersal, recruitment, and spatial patterns of genetic diversity within and among populations. Here, we review the diversity of aquatic plant life histories and reproductive modes and consider: (1) their effects on patterns of dispersal across spatial scales ranging from the local population to inter-continental transport; (2) how clonality affects sexual fitness via trade-offs and mating patterns; (3) the roles of sexual versus clonal reproduction in population establishment and in the subsequent spread of invasive aquatic plants; (4) how the contrasting properties of sexually- versus clonally-derived propagules in terms of dispersal and competition potentially influence patterns of selection on reproductive mode; (5) the roles of phenotypic plasticity, somatic mutations and epigenetic inheritance in promoting invasion success in widespread clonal aquatic species. We conclude our review by identifying profitable areas for future enquiry in an effort to provide a robust agenda for future research on the ecology and evolution of aquatic plants. The general morphology of cuticle-lined internal genitalia and oviduct is analyzed in intact females of the phytophagous mites, Loboquintus subsquamatus and Trisetacus cf bagdasariani (Acari: Eriophyoidea) using tetramethylrhodamine B isothiocyanate-phalloidin, three anaesthetics (magnesium sulphate, lidocaine and CO-enriched water) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). This is the first protocol adopted for CLSM studying musculature of mites. Revision of the previous terminology of eriophyoid internal genitalia from Nuzzaci and Alberti (Eriophyoid mites: their biology, natural enemies and control. World crop pests 6. Elsevier, Amsterdam, pp 101-150, ) resulted in the refinement of the terms 'distal oviduct', 'genital chamber' and 'spermatheca'. Relative position of the elements of cuticle-lined internal genitalia is discussed and a generalized 3D model and animation (available on-line as supplementary material) of eriophyoid genital apparatus are provided. The wall of eriophyoid oviduct contains strong longitudinal muscles attached to the cuticle genital chamber with folded walls. When the egg is being extruded by contraction of the oviduct muscles, it forms lobes corresponding to the internal topography of the oviduct and genital chamber; these lobes invaginate inward from the gonopore, resulting in the 'flower-shaped' figures rarely observed in slide-mounted mites. Gnathosomal muscles (cheliceral muscles and extrinsic muscles of palps) and opisthosomal muscles D of Loboquintus mites are attached to the three posterior depressions near the rear prodorsal shield margin. Background and Aims About 6 % of an estimated total of 240 000 species of angiosperms are dioecious. The main precursors of this sexual system are thought to be monoecy and gynodioecy. A previous angiosperm-wide study revealed that many dioecious species have evolved through the monoecy pathway; some case studies and a large body of theoretical research also provide evidence in support of the gynodioecy pathway. If plants have evolved through the gynodioecy pathway, gynodioecious and dioecious species should co-occur in the same genera. However, to date, no large-scale analysis has been conducted to determine the prevalence of the gynodioecy pathway in angiosperms. In this study, this gap in knowledge was addressed by performing an angiosperm-wide survey in order to test for co-occurrence as evidence of the gynodioecy pathway. Methods Data from different sources were compiled to obtain (to our knowledge) the largest dataset on gynodioecy available, with 275 genera that include at least one gynodioecious species. This dataset was combined with a dioecy dataset from the literature, and a study was made of how often dioecious and gynodioecious species could be found in the same genera using a contingency table framework. Key Results It was found that, overall, angiosperm genera with both gynodioecious and dioecious species occur more frequently than expected, in agreement with the gynodioecy pathway. Importantly, this trend holds when studying different classes separately (or sub-classes, orders and families), suggesting that the gynodioecy pathway is not restricted to a few taxa but may instead be widespread in angiosperms. Conclusions This work complements that previously carried out on the monoecy pathway and suggests that gynodioecy is also a common pathway in angiosperms. The results also identify angiosperm families where some (or all) dioecious species may have evolved from gynodioecious precursors. Abstract: In this study, we developed a method of fractional parentage analysis using microsatellite markers. We propose a method for calculating parentage probability, which considers missing data and genotyping errors due to null alleles and other causes, by regarding observed alleles as realizations of random variables which take values in the set of alleles at the locus and developing a method for simultaneously estimating the true and null allele frequencies of all alleles at each locus. We then applied our proposed method to a large sample collected from a wild population of brown trout (Salmo trutta). On analyzing the data using our method, we found that the reproductive success of brown trout obeyed a power law, indicating that when the parent-offspring relationship is regarded as a link, the reproductive system of brown trout is a scale-free network. Characteristics of the reproductive network of brown trout include individuals with large bodies as hubs in the network and different power exponents of degree distributions between males and females. Background and Aims The sexual separation in dioecious species has interested biologists for decades; however, the cellular mechanism leading to unisexuality has been poorly understood. In this study, the cellular changes that lead to male sterility in the functionally dioecious cactus, Opuntia stenopetala, are described. Methods The spatial and temporal patterns of programmed cell death (PCD) were determined in the anthers of male and female flowers using scanning electron microscopy analysis and histological observations, focusing attention on the transition from bisexual to unisexual development. In addition, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick-end labelling assays were used as an indicator of DNA fragmentation to corroborate PCD. Key results PCD was detected in anthers of both female and male flowers, but their patterns differed in time and space. Functionally male individuals developed viable pollen, and normal development involved PCD on each layer of the anther wall, which occurred progressively from the inner (tapetum) to the outer layer (epidermis). Conversely, functional female individuals aborted anthers by premature and displaced PCD. In anthers of female flowers, the first signs of PCD, such as a nucleus with irregular shape, fragmented and condensed chromatin, high vacuolization and condensed cytoplasm, occurred at the microspore mother cell stage. Later these features were observed simultaneously in all anther wall layers, connective tissue and filament. Neither pollen formation nor anther dehiscence was detected in female flowers of O. stenopetala due to total anther disruption. Conclusions Temporal and spatial changes in the patterns of PCD are responsible for male sterility of female flowers in O. stenopetala. Male fertility requires the co-ordination of different events, which, when altered, can lead to male sterility and to functionally unisexual individuals. Abstract: Marathrum is a Neotropical genus of Podostemaceae that has been recognized for its elevated degree of vegetative polymorphism. Marathrum rubrum Novelo & Philbrick and Marathrum schiedeanum Cham. represent a clear example: are these distinct species or morphological variants determined by the environment? Three populations were analyzed where we carried out intra-population manual cross-pollinations and compared these to heterospecific pollinations and open-pollinations (control) to test for the presence of reproductive barriers between species. Pollen tube development, seed production, seed size, and germination were observed in legitimate and heterospecific crosses. Our results indicate that there are no reproductive barriers between these species, since we did not find differences in abundance and/or distribution of pollen tubes among pollination treatments. Significant differences among populations in the average number of ovules were found. Similarly, seed number differed among pollination treatments. In general, heterospecific crosses produced less seeds than manual cross-pollinations and open-pollinated flowers. Average seed size was larger for heterospecific crosses than manual cross-pollinations and open-pollinations, whereas no differences in seed germination among populations or pollination treatments were detected. The results support the hypothesis that these ‘species’ constitute morphological variants of the same species. These results are consistent with the proposal that M. rubrum and M. schiedeanum are conspecific with the more widespread Mesoamerican species Marathrum foeniculaceum Bonpl. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Trypanosoma cruzi, the agent of Chagas disease, is usually subdivided into six discrete typing units (DTUs), TcI to TcVI, among which TcI and TcV are most common in human infections in Bolivia. Multilocus microsatellite typing (MLMT) was selected to further explore the structure of the natural populations belonging to these DTUs. The analysis showed that microsatellite clustering does not fully match the six DTUs, but it is relevant for the within DTUs analyses. Population genetics analysis was conducted on 11 relevant subsamples of stocks from Bolivia and Peru, belonging to TcI (6) and TcV (5), defined by four criterions: DTU, vector species, geographic origin, and date of isolation. Most TcV strains presented the same multilocus genotype over all subsamples with the puzzling characteristic that five loci were heterozygous and the other five homozygous. In TcI, four clusters were defined according to the vector species. Most of them appeared in agreement with clonal propagation (stocks isolated from Triatoma infestans and Triatoma sordida), while a few highly homozygous stocks (e.g. those isolated from Rhodnius stali) suggested that scarce sex events can occur. The poor role played by spatio-temporal factors in describing the observed genetic diversity suggested that ecology, in particular as regard to host played a significant role. These results highlight the extreme heterogeneity of T. cruzi and suggest that further population genetics surveys will need to target the most possible precise spatio-temporal and ecological scales. The southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), and other related species have become pests in cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., after successful eradication efforts for the boll weevil. In Central Texas, little is known regarding the ecology of N. viridula. The reproductive status of N. viridula adults can be used to estimate population density and overwintering survival, but previous studies failed to provide clear visualizations for the developmental stages of the reproductive systems. This study was undertaken to provide improved visualizations of the developmental stages of the reproductive systems. Results will be critical in the accurate assessment of population reproductive status, estimation of population densities, and overwintering survival. Recent biological invasions provide opportunities to investigate microevolution during contemporary timescales. The tempo and scope of local adaptation will be determined by the intensity of natural selection and the amounts and kinds of genetic variation within populations. In flowering plants, genetic diversity is strongly affected by interactions between reproductive systems and stochastic forces associated with immigration history and range expansion. Here, we explore the significance of reproductive system diversity for contemporary evolution during plant invasion. We focus in particular on how reproductive modes influence the genetic consequences of long-distance colonization and determine the likelihood of adaptive responses during invasion. In many clonal invaders, strong founder effects and restrictions on sexual reproduction limit opportunities for local adaptation. In contrast, adaptive changes to life-history traits should be a general expectation in both outbreeding and inbreeding species. We provide evidence that evolutionary modifications to reproductive systems promote the colonizing ability of invading populations and that reproductive timing is an important target of selection during range expansion. Knowledge of the likelihood and speed at which local adaptation evolves in invasive plants will be particularly important for management practices when evolutionary changes enhance ecological opportunities and invasive spread. Important scientific findings frequently arise from serendipitous findings. Unfortunately, many scientists are not prepared to take advantage of unexpected results and to question established paradigms, and this prevents them from capitalizing on their good fortune. In this essay, I first explain how pure serendipity led us to discover unusual modes of reproduction such as clonal reproduction by males and a green-beard gene. Next, I argue that the reproductive systems of ants and other organisms are probably much more diverse than is generally appreciated. This leads me to advocate for a new ‘molecular naturalist’ approach to reproductive systems and a more ‘naturalistic’ approach in population and evolutionary genetics. Finally, I make two further points. The first is that our current funding and education systems tend to hinder originality and curiosity. The other is that the field of ecology and evolution, and more generally all of science, would benefit from a shift in values from scientific productivity to scientific creativity. Patterns of isozyme variation were examined in 17 populations of P. pusillus and P. berchtoldii, together with one population of P. trichoides taken for comparison. Both P. pusillus and P. berchtoldii displayed low levels of variation within populations associated with high levels of interpopulation differentiation. This pattern of partitioning of genetic variation within and between populations is attributed to the founder effect, frequent vegetative propagation by turions, dominant self-fertilization and limited seedling recruitment. The mechanism of pollen transfer was investigated in cultivation. Effective pollination takes place in air above the water surface (autogamy, geitonogamy, anemogamy), on the water surface (epihydrogamy) or below water surface (hydroautogamy). The species are self-compatible. The low level of infra-population variation together with rare occurrence of heterozygotes suggest that selfing is the most frequent mode of pollination, although the protogynous flowers may occasionally permit some cross-pollination. Unique enzyme markers were found for P. pusillus and P. berchtoldii, and also for the single population of P. trichoides. All multienzyme phenotypes were species-specific. Isozyme data support the separate position of P. pusillus and P. berchtoldii. The present paper reviews mechanisms producing complicated patterns of variation within Hieracium subgen. Pilosella. The taxonomic complexity of this subgenus is due to highly variable basic species and intermediate (hybridogenous) species. The most important sources of variation are polyploidy, hybridization and (mostly) facultative apomixis of the aposporous type. The combination of hybridization, apomixis and clonal growth leads to the maintenance of various hybrids having originated from backcrossing and hybridization among more than two species, which is possible because of the fertile pollen of apomictic hybrids. Ever since Mendel’s experiments, some of F1 hybrids have been found to be highly variable, probably reflecting the high heterozygosity of some of the basic species. Variable progeny can also result from unreduced gametes, or the rare parthenogenetic development of reduced gametes. While these processes were detected in experiments, their role within field populations remains unknown. However, multiple origins of intermediate species, and introgression within basic species are highly likely to result in high levels of variation. While few population level studies have been undertaken in Europe, several such studies have been carried out on adventive populations in New Zealand, and these show a different pattern.
