The control and management of malaria are linked to the quality of diagnosis. We sought to estimate the performance of routine microscopy for malaria diagnosis and assess the prevalence of submicroscopic Plasmodium (P.) falciparum infection among febrile patients in two healthcare facilities in Mossendjo, the Republic of the Congo. A cross-sectional study was conducted between January and December 2022. A total of 650 and 234 patients with signs of uncomplicated malaria were enrolled at the Centre de Sante Intégré (CSIMSJ) and Hôpital de Base (HBMSJ), respectively. Two thick blood smears were performed for each patient, one analyzed by routine microscopists and the other by an expert. The msp-1 and msp-2 genes were genotyped to detect submicroscopic P. falciparum infection. At the CSIMSJ, the sensitivity was 49.5% and the specificity was 88.6%. The positive and negative predictive values were 77.7% and 68.7%, respectively. At the HBMSJ, the sensitivity was 32.9% and the specificity was 79.4%. The positive and negative predictive values were 44.8% and 69.5%, respectively. P. falciparum was the only species detected by routine microscopists, while experts identified some cases with P. malariae and P. ovale. The proportion of submicroscopic infections was 35.75%. Children under 5 years old had higher rates of parasitemia. However, submicroscopic infections were more pronounced in the adult group. The performance of routine malaria microscopists at Mossendjo was inaccurate at both sites. With the large proportion of submicroscopic infection, malaria management at Mossendjo requires the improvement of microscopists' skills and the concomitant use of RDTs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Objective HIV has been reported to interfere with protective vaccination against multiple pathogens, usually through the decreased effectiveness of the antibody responses. We aimed to assess neutralizing antibody responses induced by COVID-19 vaccination in PLWH in Brazzaville, Republique of the Congo. Method The study was conducted at the Ambulatory Treatment Center of the National HIV Program, in charge of over 6000 PLWH, and the health center of FCRM in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo. Participants were divided into two groups: PLWH with well-controlled HIV infection (CD4 counts no older than one week ≥ 800 / mm3, undetectable viral load of a period no older than one week and regularly taking Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy for at least 6 months) and PLWOH. These groups were subdivided by vaccination status: fully vaccinated with adenovirus-based vaccines (Janssen/Ad26.COV2.S and Sputnik/Gam-COVID-Vac) or inactivated virus vaccine (Sinopharm/BBIP-CorV) and a control group of unvaccinated healthy individuals. All participants were RT-PCR negative at inclusion and/or with no documented history of SARS-CoV-2 infection. ELISA method was used for detecting IgG and neutralizing Antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 antigens using a commercial neutralizing assay. Results We collected oropharyngeal and blood samples from 1016 participants including 684 PLWH and 332 PLWOH. Both PLWH and PLWOH elicited high levels of antibody responses after complete vaccination with inactivated virus vaccine (Sinopharm/BBIP-CorV) and adenovirus-based vaccines (Janssen/Ad26.COV2.S and Sputnik/Gam-COVID-Vac). Overall, no difference was observed in neutralization capacity between PLWOH and PLWH with well-controlled HIV infection. Conclusion The results from this study underline the importance of implementing integrated health systems that provide PLWH the opportunity to benefit HIV prevention and care, at the same time while monitoring their vaccine-induced antibody kinetics for appropriate booster schedules.

The study presents the data on organization of laboratory testing of clinical and environmental samples within the framework of establishing the etiology of the acute intestinal infections outbreak, performed by the specialists of the joint SAET of the Rospotrebnadzor in Dolisie (Republic of the Congo) in the period of 07–24 July, 2023.Materials and methods. In order to identify the causative agents of cholera and other acute intestinal infections of bacterial and viral nature, 177 clinical and environmental samples were tested, as well as cultures on solid nutrient media and bacterial suspensions. A total of 1023 tests were carried out by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and 305 – using bacteriological method.Results and discussion. The causative agent of cholera has not been detected in any of the samples tested. Using the PCR method, markers of acute intestinal diseases agents (Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., Campylobacter spp., Rotavirus A) have been identified in 23 clinical samples and 1 sample of bacterial suspension. No DNA/RNA of pathogens has been detected in environmental samples. During culture studies, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi have been isolated from 8 clinical samples, and their antibiotic sensitivity has been determined. Applying whole-genome nanopore sequencing, using the MinIon platform (Oxford Nanopore Technologies, UK), nucleotide sequences of 4 S. Typhi isolates have been investigated and deposited in the international database NCBI GenBank (No. CP141260, CP141193, CP141194, CP141195). Additionally, the analysis of initially sterile samples (blood, peritoneal fluid, intraoperational samples) from the patients of General and Reference hospitals of Dolisie has resulted in the identification of 5 cultures of non-fermenting bacteria, and their antibiotic sensitivity has been determined.

Abstract Background Mosquitoes belonging to the Anopheles gambiae sensu lato complex play a major role in malaria transmission across Africa. This study assessed the relative importance of members of An. gambiae s.l. in malaria transmission in two rural villages in the Republic of the Congo. Methods Adult mosquitoes were collected using electric aspirators from June to September 2022 in Djoumouna and Ntoula villages and were sorted by taxa based on their morphological features. Anopheles gambiae s.l. females were also molecularly identified. A TaqMan-based assay and a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were performed to determine Plasmodium spp. in the mosquitoes. Entomological indexes were estimated, including man-biting rate, entomological inoculation rate (EIR), and diversity index. Results Among 176 mosquitoes collected, An. gambiae s.l. was predominant (85.8%), followed by Culex spp. (13.6%) and Aedes spp. (0.6%). Three members of the An. gambiae s.l. complex were collected in both villages, namely An. gambiae sensu stricto (74.3%), Anopheles coluzzii (22.9%) and Anopheles arabiensis (2.8%). Three Plasmodium species were detected in An. gambiae s.s. and An. coluzzii (Plasmodium falciparum, P. malariae and P. ovale), while only P. falciparum and P. malariae were found in An. arabiensis. In general, the Plasmodium infection rate was 35.1% (53/151) using the TaqMan-based assay, and nested PCR confirmed 77.4% (41/53) of those infections. The nightly EIR of An. gambiae s.l. was 0.125 infectious bites per person per night (ib/p/n) in Djoumouna and 0.08 ib/p/n in Ntoula. The EIR of An. gambiae s.s. in Djoumouna (0.11 ib/p/n) and Ntoula (0.04 ib/p/n) was higher than that of An. coluzzii (0.01 and 0.03 ib/p/n) and An. arabiensis (0.005 and 0.0 ib/p/n). Conclusions This study provides baseline information on the dominant vectors and dynamics of malaria transmission in the rural areas of the Republic of the Congo during the dry season. We present a preliminary discussion about cauliflory, sexual dimorphism and biogeographic patterns in Drypetes Vahl (Putranjivaceae Endl.), focused on Africa. We also present a taxonomic treatment for two new species of cauliflorous trees of this genus from the rainforests of western Central Africa, one endemic to Gabon and known from six gatherings, D. aphanes Quintanar, D.J.Harris & Barberá sp. nov., and the other distributed in Gabon and the Republic of the Congo, D. cauta D.J.Harris, Barberá & Quintanar sp. nov., also known from another six gatherings. They are presented along with D. gabonensis Pierre ex Hutch., known from 25 gatherings made throughout western Central Africa, a species with markedly dimorphic flowers between sexes compared to the rest of the species in the genus. Specimens of these two new species have been confused with D. gabonensis due to some morphological resemblances. This treatment includes the detailed descriptions of these three species, the typification of their names, a comparative table summarizing their main morphological differences, an identification key, an illustration and information about their habitat and distribution. A provisional IUCN Red List assessment shows that D. gabonensis and D. cauta sp. nov. are ‘Vulnerable’ species, and D. aphanes sp. nov. is ‘Endangered’. After the publication of these new species, Drypetes consists of 86 species in continental Africa and the Malagasy Region and 219 species for the whole world.

Abstract Background Loa loa microfilariae circulate in the peripheral blood of human hosts following a diurnal periodicity, with maximal microfilaremia levels generally observed between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. Few studies have assessed factors potentially associated with this periodicity. Methods Microfilaremia data were collected repeatedly between 9:00 am and 8:00 pm from 13 individuals in the Republic of the Congo. Using local polynomial regression (LOESS), we determined the best models representing the dynamics of microfilaremia over this period. In a second step, using cosinor models, we evaluated the influence of sex, age, and body temperature on the periodicity of L. loa microfilaremia in blood. Results All subjects reached their maximum microfilaremia between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. Individual microfilaremia showed different patterns between individuals, and some clearly showed multiple peaks within a day. LOESS provided a good fit to the observed data. Without adjustment, the maximum microfilarial density was reached around 11:00 am. Adjustment revealed three distinct modes of microfilaremia, occurring around 10:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 4:00 pm. Cosinor models also provided good fit to our data. After adjustment on body temperature, the L. loa microfilaremia fluctuation amplitude decreased significantly from 1684.8 to 310.6 microfilariae(mf)/ml and the predicted peak was estimated at 12:02 pm. Conclusions We characterized the periodicity of L. loa microfilaremia mathematically with two different approaches: cosinor models and LOESS regression. Both models suggest that body temperature plays a role in the variation in microfilaremia within a day. Further studies are needed to identify individual co-factors affecting microfilaremia. We conducted a serologic survey of 2,430 serum samples collected during 1997-2012 for various studies to determine the prevalence of the hemorrhagic fever virus Ebola virus (EBOV) in equatorial Africa. We screened serum samples for neutralizing antibodies by using a pseudotype microneutralization assay and a newly developed luciferase immunoprecipitation system assay. Specimens seroreactive for EBOV were confirmed by using an ELISA. Our results suggest a serologic prevalence of 2%-3.5% in the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which have reported outbreaks of infection with EBOV. In addition we detected a seroprevalence of 1.3% in southern Cameroon, which indicated a low risk for exposure in this region.

This study showed that natural infection with B1.617.2 (delta) variant was more immunogenic compared to those being infected with B1.214.2 variant. We found a significantly higher concentration in anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG (p < 0.0002) and antibodies neutralization capacity (P < 0.0001) in fully vaccinated compared to unvaccinated participants. Two months post vaccination, individuals who received Janssen/Ad26.COV2.S presented higher (p = 0.01) total IgG to spike protein compared to BBIP-CorV.Conclusion: Both natural infection and vaccination with BBIP-CorV and Janssen/Ad26.COV2.S induced antibody response in Congolese population. In addition, Janssen/Ad26.COV2.S was more immunogenic than Sinopharm/BBIP-CorV. There is a need to investigate the duration of these antibodies both in previously infected and naive vaccinated Congolese to allow public heath stakeholders to make evidence-based decision on vaccine schedule for the Congolese population. Background: In the Republic of the Congo, malaria represents a major public health problem affecting all age groups. A regular surveillance of the current efficacy of first-line anti-malarial drugs is required in the face of possible emergence and spread of artemisinin-resistant Plasmodium falciparum strains in Africa. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of malaria among febrile patients of all ages and assess the efficacy of artemether-lumefantrine (AL) and artesunate-amodiaquine (ASAQ) in Congolese children. Methods: Febrile patients of all ages were initially screened for malaria by both rapid diagnostic test (RDT) and microscopy. Patients less than 12 years of age, with parasitaemia ≥ 1000 asexual parasites of P. falciparum/µL of blood, without any signs of severity, were enrolled in a therapeutic efficacy study and treated after obtaining their parents' (or legal guardian's) informed consent in two health centres in Dolisie. The patients were followed for 28 days in accordance with the 2009 World Health Organization standard protocol. If parasitaemia reappeared on or after day 7, the genetic profiles (genes expressing merozoite surface protein-1 [msp1], merozoite surface protein-2 [msp2], and glutamine-rich protein [glurp]) of pre-treatment and post-treatment isolates were compared by nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by capillary electrophoresis to make a distinction between recrudescence and re-infection. The clinical and parasitological outcome was analysed by the per-protocol method and Kaplan–Meier survival curves. Results: A total of 994 febrile patients of all ages were screened by RDT and microscopy. Of 994 patients, 323 (32.5%) presented a positive RDT, and 266 (26.8%) were microscopy-positive. Based on microscopy as the reference diagnostic method, the sensitivity and the specificity of the RDT were 98.9 and 91.8%, respectively. The Cohen's kappa coefficient was 0.86. A total of 121 children aged less than 12 years (61 in AL treatment group and 60 in ASAQ treatment group) were included in therapeutic efficacy study. Before PCR correction, the proportions of adequate clinical and parasitological response were 96.6% for AL and 86.0% for ASAQ in the per-protocol population (P < 0.05). The PCR-corrected efficacy rates were 98.2% and 94.2% for AL and ASAQ, respectively (P > 0.05). Both treatments were well tolerated. Conclusions: AL and ASAQ remain highly effective for the first-line treatment of uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria in Dolisie. Despite high efficacy of first- and second-line treatment, there is a continuing need to scale up effective malaria preventive interventions and vector control strategies in the country. Mo Koundje ("Mok") was a western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) whose remains form part of the collection of Leeds Museums and Galleries. Before his early death from Bright's disease (nephritis), he was hugely popular during six years of captivity spent at London Zoo. Newspapers from around the United Kingdom and across the globe reported Mok's arrival at the Zoo, his exploits, illnesses and demise. While the archives of the Zoological Society of London tell us about the latter part of Mok's life, tracing his life and journey before entering Europe has proved more difficult. However, French colonial archives held at the Archives nationales d'outre-mer, Aix-en-Provence, give glimpses of the life of his previous owner, Jean Charles André Capagorry, allowing us to piece together the long journey Mok made from a Congolese forest to a museum in Leeds. Background and aims - The genus Englerodendron (Leguminosae-Detarioideae) has recently been enlarged to include Isomacrolobium and Pseudomacrolobium, and currently includes 18 tropical African species. The recent discovery of a new species in Gabon has led us to re-evaluate the delimitation of several taxa in the genus. Material and methods - This paper is based on field work by the authors in Gabon, and on a study of herbarium material from BR, BRLU, K, LBV, MO, P, and WAG; normal practices of herbarium taxonomy have been applied. Results - Englerodendron nguemae is described and illustrated as a new species, endemic to Gabon. It is remarkable for the variation in its leaves, which may be 2-jugate, 1-jugate, or unifoliolate on the same plant. The species is most similar to E. brachyrhachis, but the latter has uniformly 2-jugate leaves; E. nguemae also differs in its longer and more broadly winged leaf rachis (if present) that is convex (not flat) above, its stamen filaments pubescent at the base, and its glabrous style. Several collections from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, previously associated with E. obanense, are considered here to represent two different taxa. One of them, E. macranthum (a new combination and name at new rank based on Macrolobium isopetalum var. macranthum, which is raised to species status), is endemic to the Mayombe range and differs from E. obanense by its inflorescences branched from the base or nearly so, and its shorter 1-seeded pods. The other taxon, still imperfectly known and here treated as Englerodendron sp. A, is endemic to the Kivu region; it differs from E. obanense by its large foliaceous stipules and from E. conchyliophorum by the lack of a basal auricle on the stipules. In addition, the first records of E. leptorrhachis from Equatorial Guinea, and of E. conchyliophorum from the Republic of the Congo, are documented, and a revised key to the now 21 species (one undescribed) of Englerodendron is presented. Abstract Background Invasive mosquito species, such as Aedes albopictus in Congo can affect the distribution of native species, changing the vector composition and pattern of disease transmission. Here, we comparatively establish the geographical distribution and larval habitat preference of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus and the risk of arbovirus disease outbreaks using Stegomyia indices in the city of Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of the Congo. Methods Human dwelling surveys of water-holding containers for immature stages of Aedes was carried out in December 2017 in Brazzaville through a random cluster sampling method. A total of 268 human dwellings distributed in 9 boroughs and 27 neighbourhoods were surveyed across the city. Results Overall, 455 potential larval habitats were surveyed. Both Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus were collected across the city with an overall high prevalence of Ae. aegypti (53.1%) compared to Ae. albopictus (46.9%). Geographical distribution analysis showed that Ae. aegypti was more abundant (mean = 6.6 ± 1.4) in neighbourhoods located in downtown, while the abundance of Ae. albopictus was low (mean = 3.5 ± 0.6) in suburbs. Peridomestic containers, especially discarded tanks, were the most strongly colonized productive larval habitat for both mosquito species with the prevalence of 56.4% and 53.1% for Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus, respectively. Globally, the house index (HI), Breteau index (BI) and container index (CI) were high for Ae. aegypti (26.6%, 38.4% and 22.6%) and Ae. albopictus (33.3%, 49.6% and 26.6%) compared to the transmission risk threshold (5%, 5% and 20%) established by the WHO/PAHO. Overall, pupae-based indices (the pupae index and the pupae per person index) were not significantly different between Ae. aegypti (273.4% and 23.2%) and Ae. albopictus (228.8% and 19.5%). Conclusions The findings of this study suggest a high risk for transmission of arbovirus diseases in Brazzaville and call for an urgent need to implement vector control strategies against these vectors in the Republic of the Congo.

Abstract Background In the Republic of Congo, with two massive outbreaks of chikungunya observed this decade, little is known about the insecticide resistance profile of the two major arbovirus vectors Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Here, we established the resistance profile of both species to insecticides and explored the resistance mechanisms to help Congo to better prepare for future outbreaks. Methods Immature stages of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus were sampled in May 2017 in eight cities of the Republic of the Congo and reared to adult stage. Larval and adult bioassays, and synergist (piperonyl butoxide [PBO]) assays were carried out according to WHO guidelines. F1534C mutation was genotyped in field collected adults in both species and the polymorphism of the sodium channel gene assessed in Ae. aegypti. Results All tested populations were susceptible to temephos after larval bioassays. A high resistance level was observed to 4% DDT in both species countrywide (21.9–88.3% mortality). All but one population (Ae. aegypti from Ngo) exhibited resistance to type I pyrethroid, permethrin, but showed a full susceptibility to type II pyrethroid (deltamethrin) in almost all locations. Resistance was also reported to 1% propoxur in Ae. aegypti likewise in two Ae. albopictus populations (Owando and Ouesso), and the remaining were fully susceptible. All populations of both species were fully susceptible to 1% fenitrothion. A full recovery of susceptibility was observed in Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus when pre-exposed to PBO and then to propoxur and permethrin respectively. The F1534C kdr mutation was not detected in either species. The high genetic variability of the portion of sodium channel spanning the F1534C in Ae. aegypti further supported that knockdown resistance probably play no role in the permethrin resistance. Conclusions Our study showed that both Aedes species were susceptible to organophosphates (temephos and fenitrothion), while for other insecticide classes tested the profile of resistance vary according to the population origin. These findings could help to implement better and efficient strategies to control these species in the Congo in the advent of future arbovirus outbreaks.

The family Rhabdoviridae contains diverse viruses, including vector-borne and nonvector-borne viruses, some that are human pathogens, including rabies virus and also nonpathogenic viruses. Bats, which are a known reservoir of viruses with zoonotic potential including coronaviruses, also carry multiple rhabdoviruses such as but not limited to lyssaviruses. We collected samples from 193 insectivorous and frugivorous bats in the Republic of the Congo and tested them for rhabdovirus RNA. Four samples were found positive for viral RNA representing sequences of four different, not previously described rhabdoviruses. Although phylogenetic and taxonomic placement of the novel sequences is uncertain, similarities with previously detected rhabdovirus sequences in bats suggest that these could represent vertebrate viruses. Considering the pathogenic risks some rhabdoviruses pose for humans, these results highlight the need for more research and surveillance regarding rhabdoviruses and bats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Monkeypox, caused by a zoonotic orthopoxvirus, is endemic in Central and West Africa. Monkeypox has been sporadically reported in the Republic of the Congo. During March 22–April 5, 2017, we investigated 43 suspected human monkeypox cases. We interviewed suspected case-patients and collected dried blood strips and vesicular and crust specimens (active lesions), which we tested for orthopoxvirus antibodies by ELISA and monkeypox virus and varicella zoster virus DNA by PCR. An ecologic investigation was conducted around Manfouété, and specimens from 105 small mammals were tested for anti-orthopoxvirus antibodies or DNA. Among the suspected human cases, 22 met the confirmed, probable, and possible case definitions. Only 18 patients had available dried blood strips; 100% were IgG positive, and 88.9% (16/18) were IgM positive. Among animals, only specimens from Cricetomys giant pouched rats showed presence of orthopoxvirus antibodies, adding evidence to this species’ involvement in the transmission and maintenance of monkeypox virus in nature.

The Afrotropical scarab beetle genus Cerhomalus Quedenfeldt, 1884 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) is revised. Two new species are described: C. quedenfeldti sp. nov. and C. petrovitzi sp. nov. A new combination, Cerhomalus absconditus (Petrovitz, 1971) comb. nov., is established. The genus occurs in Central and West Africa with the majority of records from the Congo Basin. In this study, we empirically examined the effect of natural resource abundance on economic growth for Republic of the Congo for the period 19742015 by using ARDL approach in order to test the resource curse hypothesis, the findings of this research suggest that the natural resource did not enhance economic growth, and instead of contributing positively on growth, it affects him negatively. Furthermore, we find that financial development exerts a negative and significant impact on economic growth in the short-run. The impact of exports on economic growth is positive and statistically significant at 1% level of signification in long-run as well as in short-run. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Archean banded iron formations (BIF) represent a major contributor to better constraining and assessing the paleogeography and evolution of Archean cratons. In this context, we conducted an exhaustive sampling and analysis campaign of BIF units in the Congo Craton, covering several greenstone belts within the Ivindo, Kelle-Mbomo, and Chaillu blocks. The REE + Y patterns suggest: (1) Interaction of seawater with Fe-oxyhydroxides, as illustrated by strong REE enrichment coupled with La and Y enrichment; (2) contributions from high-temperature (>250 °C) hydrothermal fluids, illustrated by positive Eu anomalies; and (3) detrital input as suggested by relatively consistent REE concentrations and a chondritic Y/Ho ratio. These observations suggest a typical environment of Algoma-type BIF deposition. Moreover, assessment of the Ce anomalies in a combination of HREE enrichment indicates that some basins in the Chaillu and Ivindo blocks may have known potential oxygen-rich episodes in the early Archean during the deposition of these BIFs.

Objective: To evaluate the clinical severity of diarrhoea associated to viral co-infection in children with acute gastroenteritis.Methods: About 461 children under five years hospitalised with acute diarrhoea (266 males and 187 females) were enrolled in the study. Using stool samples, rotavirus and adenovirus infections were investigated by ELISA, and norovirus infections by nested duplex RT-PCR. We assessed social, demographic, clinical and behavioural conditions that might influence the occurrence of rotavirus, adenovirus and norovirus infections.Results: Mono-viral infection was detected in 49% and mixed viral infection in 12% of patients. The prevalence of mixed infection was neither dependent on age nor sex. Three samples were infected with all three viruses. A significant association was found between fever (axillary temperature> 37.5 °C) and rotavirus-norovirus dual infection (aOR (CI 95%) = 2.1 (1.14-3.84), P = 0.016; aOR (CI 95%) = 0.37 (0.19-0.73), P = 0.004). Mixed infection was the most common during the dry season from June to October (71.4% versus 54.7%, P = 0.023).Conclusion: Co-infection with both rotavirus and norovirus is common in under-five hospitalised children but does not contribute to the severity of the disease. The Nabeba high-grade iron deposit (Republic of the Congo) is hosted by banded iron formation (BIF) in the Ivindo Basement Complex, which lies in the northwestern part of the Congo Craton. The Nabeba BIF is intercalated with chlorite-sericite-quartz schist and comprises two facies (oxide and a carbonate-oxide). In this study, whole-rock and LA-ICP-MS magnetite geochemistry of the BIF was reported. Magnetite samples from both BIF facies had fairly similar trace element compositions except for the rare earth element plus yttrium (REE + Y) distribution patterns. The high V, Ni, Cr, and Mg contents of the magnetite in the Nabeba BIF could be ascribed to the involvement of external medium-high temperature hydrothermal fluids during their deposition in relatively reduced environment. The Post-Archean Australian Shale (PAAS)-normalized REY patterns of the Nabeba BIF magnetite were characterized by LREE depletion coupled with varying La and positive Eu anomalies. Processing of the information gathered from the geochemical signatures of magnetite and the whole-rock BIF suggested that the Nabeba BIF was formed by the mixing of predominantly anoxic seawater (99.9%) with 0.1% of high-temperature (>250 °C) hydrothermal vent fluids, similar to the formation mechanism of many Archean Algoma-type BIFs reported elsewhere in the world.

Abstract The HIV epidemic continues to be a major global public health issue. Since 2012, there has been a paucity of information from the Republic of the Congo on HIV incidence and prevalence rates, national HIV programme effectiveness, highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) rollout, patient adherence to treatment, operational and basic science research studies on HIV/AIDS, and donor funding and its impact on the country. A review of the existing literature on HIV in the Republic of the Congo was conducted, focused on prevalence trends, effectiveness of the current national HIV programme, HAART rollout, patient adherence to antiretrovirals (ARVs), resistance to ARVs, the cost of treatment, and operational issues affecting HIV/AIDS programmes in the country. In light of the findings, several important priority areas for scaling-up HIV/AIDS services, programmatic and research activities in the Republic of the Congo are highlighted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents the results of optical, electron microscopic and electron microprobe studies of columbite group minerals, collected during heavy mineral concentrate sampling of alluvial deposits in the Mayoko region (Republic of the Congo). The aim of the study is revealing tantalum niobates ore body in this region. We found that these minerals in loose deposits are represented by two grain-size groups: less than 1.6 mm (fine fraction) and 1.6-15 mm (coarse fraction). The grains of both fractions belong mainly to columbite-(Fe), less often to columbite-(Mn), tantalite-(Mn) and tantalite-(Fe), contain impurities of Sc, Ti, and W. The crystals have micro-scaled zoning (zones varies slightly in the Ta/Nb ratio values) and contains a lot of mineral inclusions and veins represented by zircon, pyrochlore supergroup minerals and others. Columbite-(Fe) and columbite-(Mn) are characterized by an increased content of Ta2O5 up to the transition to tantalite-(Fe) and tantalite-(Mn). This allows us to exclude the formation of subalkaline rare-metal granites, their metasomatites (albitites and greisenes) and carbonatites, from the list of possible columbite ore rocks source in the Mayoko district. Thus, beryl type and complex spodumene subtype rare-element pegmatites of the mixed petrogenetic family LCT-NYF (according to P.Černý) should be considered as a probable root source. The results of the research should be taken into account when developing the methodology for prospecting in this area.

Potamonautes walderi (Colosi, 1924), is redescribed from the lectotype and the male gonopods, abdomen, mouthparts, chelipeds, and sternum are illustrated. Photographs of the lectotype are provided and its distribution and conservation status is discussed. The Congo’s independence in 1960 was followed by unrest, intervention by Belgian troops, and the secession of the Katanga province. The United Nations Security Council authorized Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld to send a peacekeeping force to support the Congolese government, but with the proviso not to interfere in domestic politics. This contradiction created a mission impossible. Conflicting interpretations of the mandate were complicated by the member states’ geostrategic interests at the height of the Cold War. The mandate that Hammarskjöld had boldly secured was contested and led both the Soviet Union and the Western alliances of states to distrust the role of the secretary-general. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Identification of a chikungunya virus outbreak in a rural region in the Republic of the Congo. • Presence of the E1-A226V substitution in the circulating chikungunya virus strain. • Possible recent evolution of the A226V mutation and vector-host switch. In January 2019, an outbreak of chikungunya virus fever was reported in a rural region near Pointe-Noire, Republic of the Congo. Molecular and phylogenetic analysis of this new CHIKV strain demonstrated the presence of the A226V substitution and a surprisingly close relation with Aedes aegypti- associated Central Africa chikungunya strains. These results, combined with the preponderance of Aedes albopictus in the outbreak area, suggest a recent vector-host switch facilitated by the emergence and spread of the A226V mutation from a related CHIKV strain previously circulating in Aedes aegypti. The proximity of this outbreak to the large city of Pointe-Noire alerts us to a possibly devastating future outbreak in the absence of measures limiting the proliferation of Ae. albopictus mosquitoes.
