Cerebral autoregulation is an intrinsic myogenic response of cerebral vasculature that allows for preservation of stable cerebral blood flow levels in response to changing systemic blood pressure. It is effective across a broad range of blood pressure levels through precapillary vasoconstriction and dilation. Autoregulation is difficult to directly measure and methods to indirectly ascertain cerebral autoregulation status inherently require certain assumptions. Patients with impaired cerebral autoregulation may be at risk of brain ischemia. One of the central mechanisms of ischemia in patients with metabolically compromised states is likely the triggering of spreading depolarization (SD) events and ultimately, terminal (or anoxic) depolarization. Cerebral autoregulation and SD are therefore linked when considering the risk of ischemia. In this scoping review, we will discuss the range of methods to measure cerebral autoregulation, their theoretical strengths and weaknesses, and the available clinical evidence to support their utility. We will then discuss the emerging link between impaired cerebral autoregulation and the occurrence of SD events. The Earth Hologenome Initiative (EHI) is a global collaboration to generate and analyse hologenomic data from wild animals and associated microorganisms using standardised methodologies underpinned by open and inclusive research principles. This article traces the past, present and future of health geography through the career journeys of three notable academics, Sarah Curtis (SC), Julia Jones (JJ) and Graham Moon (GM). All three of these scholars have had entanglements with the Geographies of Health and Wellbeing Research Group (GHWRG) of the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) (RGS‐IBG) throughout their careers, enabling them to shape health geography into the contemporary sub‐discipline that we know today. GHWRG has, for the last 50 years, offered a lively and supportive network for all those interested in the geographies of health and health care, medical geography and all other areas of scholarship related to health and wellbeing that engage with geographical concerns. In 2018, a group of Irish emergency medicine (EM) trainees recognised their common interest in collaborative research and the difficulties that trainees can encounter when trying to broaden their research capacity, prompting the beginning of the Irish Trainee Emergency Research Network (ITERN) journey. Trainee-led collaboratives have been shown to be feasible and have the potential to deliver impactful research projects, generating an evidence base that may not have been possible without collaboration. This article describes the successes and achievement of ITERN and describes the processes and challenges that a trainee-led research network can encounter. The authors believe that trainee-led collaboratives can deliver powerful and impactful research for patients and broaden the research capacity of individuals, hospitals, and groups of healthcare professionals. In Portugal, approximately 22.9% of the population suffers from a psychiatric disorder, which places it as the second country with the highest prevalence of psychiatric disorders in Europe (Bernardino, 2019). Several approaches have been tested in patients diagnosed with psychosis, in which exercise is included, resulting in an increased number of published documents. The present study aims to identify the main hotspots (countries, sources, authors, keywords, and affiliations) and scientific literature trends regarding exercise's effects on patients with psychosis through a bibliometric analysis. The electronic search was conducted in three databases, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science, from the 1st of January 2013 to the 5th of June 2023. The following descriptors and Boolean operators were used to formulate the search: [("Physical Exercise" OR "Physical Activity" OR "Exercise") AND "Psychosis"]. The data extracted from Software R(V.4.3.0) in R format was analysed in the Bibliometrix program (http://www.bibliometrix.org (accessed 06/06/2023), and the outcome was organised by countries, sources, authors, keywords, and affiliations. A total of 1749 scientific documents were retrieved from the databases, of which 1186 were included in the sample and analysed. The results show an increase in scientific production since 2013, peaking between 2019 and 2021. The three countries that publish the most are the United States of America, Australia, and Iran, with a vast collaboration network between different countries, authors and institutions. Portugal is in the twenty-sixth position, with 63 published articles. The top three most referenced journals are: Schizophrenia Research, Psychiatry Research, and Frontiers In Psychiatry. The top three authors in this area of research are Brendon Stubbs, Davy Vancampfort and Simon Rosenbaum. Over the past 10 years, the top ten research keywords are: "humans", "man", "woman", "adults", "schizophrenia", "exercise", "young adults", "psychosis", "adolescents", and "middle-aged". The main institutions studying this area of research are the King's College London, the University of Manchester, the University of New South Wales, the University of Washington, and the University of Toronto. This bibliometric highlights the USA, Australia, and the United Kingdom as the most cited countries, with the main reference publications in which are located the main affiliations. Main trends evolved to an increase focused on diagnosed psychotic humans with different ages and exercise. Considering the sizeable collaborative network, future studies must consider the influence of cultural differences on the success of different modes of exercise in psychotic patients.

Abstract Background Long-term reinforcement in the role of primary care and improvement the healthcare system as a whole requires the involvement of GPs in clinical research processes. However, many clinical studies fail due to failure to achieve sample population targets amongst GPs and their patients. This issue has been identified and discussed, but effective strategies to overcome it are still lacking. One of the reasons is that the positions, requirements, and experiences of GPs on participating in clinical research have hardly been examined up to now. Methods The years 2021 and 2022 saw three quantitative and qualitative surveys amongst GPs in Germany with the aim of shedding light on the attitudes, experiences, and potential issues regarding the involvement of primary care in clinical research projects and participation in cluster-randomised controlled trials (cRCTs) in a general sense. This overview summarises and abstracts conclusions gained from the exploratory series of studies and compares the results with the current research situation. From here, this contribution will then develop an approach towards optimising the integration of GPs into clinical research. Results Most of the GPs asked associated clinical research with opportunities and potential such as closing gaps in healthcare, using evidence-based instruments, optimising diagnostic and therapeutic management, and reinforcement of multiprofessional healthcare. Even so, many GPs unsure as to how far primary care in particular would stand to benefit from studies of this type in the long term. Respondents were also divided on willingness to participate in clinical research. GPs having already participated in Innovation Fund projects generally saw a benefit regarding intervention and cost–benefit relationship. However, some also reported major hurdles and stress factors such as excessive documentation and enrolment requirements, greater interference in practice routines, and sometimes poor integration into project processes such as in communication and opportunities to play an active role in the project. Conclusions Results from the studies presented provide indications as to how GPs perceive clinical research projects and cRCTs as a whole and from their existing project experience, and on the requirements that studies would have to meet for GPs to be willing to participate. In particular, making sure that clinical studies fully conform with GPs would play a major role; this especially applies to freedom to make medical decisions, limitation of documentation obligations, interference in regular practice routine, greater involvement in research planning, and long-term reinforcement in the role of primary care. Clinical research projects and cRCTs should be planned, designed, and communicated for clear and visible relevance to everyday primary care.

The current publishing landscape grapples with opacity in the review process. In response, a proposal for a blockchain-driven system is put forth to establish transparent and auditable records for evaluations. However, despite its decentralized nature, concerns persist regarding confidentiality and secure data sharing, crucial for fostering future collaborations. To address these challenges, this study advocates for the implementation of an access control mechanism (ACM) to safeguard confidentiality. Under this mechanism, only the assigned reviewer would have access to the confidential manuscript, ensuring the integrity of the review process. In scientific collaborations, the imperative for confidential data sharing extends beyond reproducibility to encompass vital collaborative endeavors such as publications, Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), grants, and funding. While hierarchical ACM may prove insufficient in defending confidential data, a more nuanced approach is proposed, leveraging a fine-grained access control model that considers contextual opinions, embodied in the concept of Zero Trust Architecture. Additionally, an incentivization mechanism based on author feedback is proposed to bolster reviewer engagement and credibility. In summary, this study aims to tackle trust and confidentiality concerns within the review system, facilitating secure data sharing for future collaborations while enhancing the credibility of reviewers. By advocating for a transition towards decentralized scientific collaboration and review processes, this work underscores the importance of integrating confidential review and data sharing practices, thereby fortifying the scholarly ecosystem.

The European Network for diagnosis and treatment of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections—EURESTOP COST Action CA21145 focuses on tackling the burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and has gathered many members working on photodynamic approaches. The Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network (CPCRN) was established in 2002 to conduct applied research and undertake related activities to translate evidence into practice, with a special focus on the unmet needs of populations at higher risk of getting cancer and dying from it. A network of academic, public health and community partners, CPCRN is a thematic research network of the Prevention Research Centers Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The National Cancer Institute's Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) has been a consistent collaborator. The CPCRN has fostered research on geographically dispersed populations through cross-institution partnerships across the network. Since its inception, the CPCRN has applied rigorous scientific methods to fill knowledge gaps in the application and implementation of evidence-based interventions, and it has developed a generation of leading investigators in the dissemination and implementation of effective public health practices. This article reflects on how CPCRN addressed national priorities, contributed to CDC's programs, emphasized health equity and impacted science over the past twenty years and potential future directions. Purpose: A diverse workforce trained in dissemination & implementation (D&I) science is critical for improving cancer outcomes and reducing cancer-related health disparities. This study aims to describe and evaluate impact of the Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network (CPCRN) Scholars Program in preparing scholars for collaborative careers in cancer control and implementation research and practice, and offers evaluation-driven recommendations for program improvements. Methods: The CPCRN Scholars Workgroup conducted a sequential, mixed methods evaluation. We collected baseline and follow-up surveys and invited all 20 scholars and ten mentors to participate in an exit interview. We assessed the experience with the Scholar's program, ratings of D&I competences, progress on their project, feedback about the curriculum, and understanding of implementation science. Results: Over 86% partially or fully completed their project within 9 months; 78% of scholars engaged with a CPCRN workgroup. Scholars rated the following program components as valuable: the Putting Public Health Evidence in Action (PPHEIA) training (88.9%), D&I training modules (83.3%), and webinars (kickoff webinar-88.9% and selecting theories/models-88.9%). There was an increase in D&I competencies from baseline to posttest, with the greatest in community engagement topics. About 78% reported that they were satisfied with format of the activities and increased confidence in ability to discuss D&I concepts. From the qualitative interviews, the benefit of the program was becoming more knowledgeable about D&I research and networking. Conclusion: The inaugural year of the program yielded positive results, particularly related to increasing knowledge about D&I science and cancer control. The aims of this study were to establish a Research Network of Early Childhood Professionals and to identity network members' top research priorities and preferred research methods. Australian early childhood education (ECE) professionals were invited to participate in a Delphi-style survey. In Stage 1, participants were asked to describe the most important issues in ECE that need addressing; from this, a 'top 20' list of the most common research priorities was generated. In Stage 2, respondents were asked to prioritise the top 20 research topics and to rate their interest in participating in various methods of research. A total of 182 ECE professionals completed the Stage 1 survey (pre-COVID-19), yielding 34 topics of research interest. Ninety-four respondents completed the Stage 2 survey (during the COVID-19 pandemic), ranking the top three most important research topics as: educator wellbeing and mental health, child wellbeing and mental health, and professional learning and development. Members of the network appear to be interested in participating in ECE research and their research priorities can help highlight real-world issues warranting further investigation. Facilitating research that addresses prioritised ECE areas is particularly timely given the significant impact of the COVID-19 pandemic across the ECE sector. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sustainability-focused research networks and communities of practice have emerged as a key response and strategy to build capacity and knowledge to support transformation towards more sustainable, just and equitable futures. This paper synthesises insights from the development of a community of practice on social-ecological systems (SES) research in southern Africa over the past decade, linked to the international Programme on Ecosystem Change and Society (PECS). This community consists of a network of researchers who carry out place-based SES research in the southern African region. They interact through various cross-cutting working groups and also host a variety of public colloquia and student and practitioner training events. Known as the Southern African Program on Ecosystem Change and Society (SAPECS), its core objectives are to: (1) derive new approaches and empirical insights on SES dynamics in the southern African context; (2) have a tangible impact by mainstreaming knowledge into policy and practice; and (3) grow the community of practice engaged in SES research and governance, including researchers, students and practitioners. This paper reflects on experiences in building the SAPECS community, with the aim of supporting the development of similar networks elsewhere in the world, particularly in the Global South. Scotland has a distinguished track record in foundational clinical research. From the completion of the first clinical trial undertaken in scurvy to cloning the world's first whole mammal, Scottish basic and clinical research is world leading. More recently, challenges in access to research skills, funding and programmes by clinical trainees led to the development of alternatives to these typical avenues of accessing research opportunities. Trainee networks evolved to meet the needs of trainees looking to access projects and collaboratives beyond audit and quality improvement commonly performed during structured training. These networks have enjoyed enormous success and have succeeded in progressing projects which have impactful outputs for patients, and improving clinical services. Here, we describe the foundation of the first pan-Scotland physician trainee research network; Scottish Trainees Research In Gastroterology and Hepatology (ScotRIGHT). Aims: A cardiac surgery international nursing and allied professional research network titled CONNECT was created to strengthen collaborative cardiac surgery research through shared initiatives including supervision, mentorship, workplace exchange programs, and multi-site clinical research. As with any new initiative, there is a need to build brand awareness to enhance user familiarity, grow membership, and promote various opportunities offered. Social media has been used across various surgical disciplines; however, their effectiveness in promoting scholarly and academic-based initiatives has not been examined. The aim of this scoping review was to examine the different types of social media platforms and strategies used to promote cardiac research initiatives for CONNECT. Methods and results: A scoping review was undertaken in which a comprehensive and thorough review of the literature was performed. Fifteen articles were included in the review. Twitter appeared to be the most common form of social media used to promote cardiac initiatives, with daily posts being the most frequent type of engagement. Frequency of views, number of impressions and engagement, link clicks, and content analysis were the most common types of evaluation metrics that were identified. Conclusion: Findings from this review will inform the design and evaluation of a targeted Twitter campaign aimed at increasing brand awareness of CONNECT, which will include the use of @CONNECTcardiac Twitter handle, hashtags, and CONNECT-driven journal clubs. In addition, the use of Twitter to disseminate information and brand initiatives related to CONNECT will be evaluated using the Twitter Analytics function. Introduction: The Emergency Medicine Education and Research by Global Experts (EMERGE) network was formed to generate and translate evidence to improve global emergency care. We share the challenges faced and lessons learned in establishing a global research network. Methods: We describe the challenges encountered when EMERGE proposed the development of a global Emergency Department (ED) visit registry. The proposed registry was to be a 6-month, retrospective, deidentified, parsimonious dataset of routinely collected variables, such as patient demographics, diagnosis, and disposition. Results: Obtaining reliable, accurate, and pertinent data from participating EDs is challenging in a global context. Barriers experienced ranged from variable data taxonomies, need for language translation, varying processes for data cleaning and transfer of deidentified data, navigating numerous data protection regulations and substantial variation in each participating institution’s research infrastructure including training in research related activities. We have overcome many of these challenges through creating detailed data sharing agreements with bilateral regulatory oversight, developing relationships with and training site health informaticians to ensure secure transfer of deidentified data, and formalizing a transfer process ensuring data privacy. Conclusions: We believe that networks like EMERGE are integral to provide the necessary platforms for education, training and research collaborations. We identified substantial challenges in data sharing and variation in local sites’ research infrastructure, and propose approaches which may overcome the data quality and access issues that we encountered.

Background Since fatigue is shared across many conditions, understanding and managing fatigue requires cross-condition collaboration. The current analysis, focusing on fatigue in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), aimed to take the first steps towards building such collaboration by identifying potential members, presenting a map of studied topics and remaining gaps, and highlighting potential funders. Methods This study used components of scientometrics, content analysis, systematic review, and gap analysis using four data sources. Results We identified research teams on IBD fatigue in six countries with 23 authors who have published on fatigue in more than one condition, with chronic fatigue syndrome as the dominant topic of interest among the researchers. Crohn’s & Colitis UK and AbbVie were the main funders of research on IBD fatigue. Most publications were observational studies and respectively focused on psychological problems, physical problems, and outcomes (quality of life followed by severity of illness index) associated with IBD fatigue. A triad with King’s College London + Crohn’s & Colitis UK + University College London was the main active research network. In co-authorship network analysis, the collaboration across countries was more visible in a wired or star-shaped network with multiple core points; however, the collaboration in the largest cluster showed a neuron- or loop-shaped collaboration across the most active institutes. Conclusions This research took a mixed methods approach to initiating a collaboration by identifying members and building a map of recent research and gaps in order to tackle fatigue as a complex, cross-condition, and multi-disciplinary problem. Interventional and qualitative studies, along with systematic reviews to fill the research gaps, are needed. An international collaboration among institutes could provide support for large initiatives such as the release of standards of best practice, clinical practice guidelines, and consensus-based definitions of fatigue.

This editorial reflects on the status and development of martial arts studies as an academic field. It considers the differences between the notions of academic discipline and academic discourse. It suggests that the common metaphor of an academic 'field' is inappropriate for describing the terrain or topography of an academic discourse or discipline, and proposes that a better metaphor for describing this realm might be 'mirrored maze'. After characterising this situation, the editorial recalls the recent history of the establishment of anglophone martial arts studies via the establishment of the Martial Arts Studies Research Network. Following this, the editorial announces that, after almost a decade of development, the latest stage of the martial arts studies project is the creation of The Martial Arts Studies Association. There is a need to understand the lives of people who live in care homes and how care should be delivered in this setting. Enabling Research in Care Homes (ENRICH) was funded by National Institute for Health Research in 2012 in England to increase research awareness and participation for people who live and work in care homes. A similar model was developed for Scotland, but without funding this proved difficult. In 2021, the Chief Scientist Office funded an expansion of the existing model for Scottish care homes. This article describes the components of enabling research in care homes in Scotland and the research infrastructure the team are developing to enable more research, including clinical trials, to be carried out in Scottish care homes, and how this will benefit the residents, families and staff. Aim of study: To investigate the trends and existing research gaps in tomato grafting by employing scientometric methods. Area of study: In silico at SCOPUS database. Material and methods: Research articles were retrieved by combining the search terms related to tomato and grafting. The articles were selected according to pre-established criteria. Temporal trends and scientometric indexes were determined. Bibliometric mappings were conducted to determine the main countries, authors, and journals that published articles on tomato grafting; and to acquire collaboration and keywords co-occurrence networks. Technical aspects of tomato grafting were analyzed. Main results: A total of 397 research articles published from 1944 to 2020 were analyzed. The number of publications on tomato grafting increased at an annual rate of 8.8%. The USA and Spain are notable in terms of the number of published and cited articles. The USA and European countries had the highest number of collaborations. European authors had the strongest research connections. Interspecific grafts (61.83%) and experiments in controlled conditions (82.87%) predominated. The growing interest in tomato grafting has been observed as a means of overcoming environmental issues as well as yield and quality improvement. Research highlights: Collaboration among research groups contributed to a higher research impact on the theme. The mitigation of abiotic stresses and fruit quality has risen as significant concerns for tomato crops.

Community pharmacists' active participation in research is essential to build a robust, translatable evidence base. Practice-based research networks (PBRNs) have been established to support collaborative research and knowledge translation in community pharmacies. However, PBRNs' effectiveness in supporting research engagement and knowledge translation remains unexplored. A new PBRN will be implemented in southeast Queensland, Australia. This realist evaluation seeks to explain whether, how, why, for whom, in what context and over what duration the PBRN supports community pharmacists to engage in research. 1. to generate transferable knowledge about the different circumstances in which—and the mechanisms by which—a PBRN influences research engagement outcomes for different community pharmacists, in the form of a program theory. 2. To use the program theory to develop evidence-informed recommendations for use by PBRN stakeholders. A realist evaluation will be conducted in four iterative phases: (1) theory development, (2) hypothesis generation, (3) observations, and (4) theory refinement. A two-year multi-method study will be conducted, including interviews with pharmacists, surveys, participatory and observational data collection. The evidence will be used to confirm, refute, and/or refine the program theory. The evaluation will adhere to the Realist And Meta-Narrative Evidence Synthesis (RAMESES) publication and quality standards. The evaluation will contribute to the body of knowledge by generating a realist program theory to explain how, why, for whom, in what contexts, to what extent, in what respects, and over what duration the PBRN supports community pharmacists to engage in research. The multinational Arabidopsis research community is highly collaborative and over the past thirty years these activities have been documented by the Multinational Arabidopsis Steering Committee (MASC). Here, we (a) highlight recent research advances made with the reference plant Arabidopsis thaliana; (b) provide summaries from recent reports submitted by MASC subcommittees, projects and resources associated with MASC and from MASC country representatives; and (c) initiate a call for ideas and foci for the "fourth decadal roadmap," which will advise and coordinate the global activities of the Arabidopsis research community.

The 10th Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance (PeDRA) Annual Conference occurred November 3–5, 2022 in Bethesda, Maryland. This conference was the first in‐person PeDRA conference after 2 years of a virtual format due to COVID‐19. Fittingly, given the effects of the pandemic, the conference theme was "Reimagining Community." The conference included presentations and panel sessions on finding individual and collective purpose, leveraging community in pursuit of a shared goal, and creating a community of resources in collaboration with NIH. The goal of this meeting was to connect clinicians, basic scientists, patients, patient advocates, and industry partners. The reimagined community of pediatric dermatology research is a synergistic space for all members to better understand, prevent, treat, and cure dermatologic diseases and conditions in children. This two‐and‐a‐half‐day conference with over 300 attendees featured educational seminars including a keynote address, didactic lecture and panel sessions, skill‐building workshops, 13 topic‐specific breakout sessions, and an interactive poster session where 108 active and finished research projects could be discussed. OBJECTIVE: Examine the epidemiology of subspecialty physical abuse evaluations within CAPNET, a multicenter child abuse pediatrics research network. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of children <10 years old who underwent an evaluation (in-person or remote) by a child abuse pediatrician (CAP) due to concerns for physical abuse at ten CAPNET hospital systems from February 2021 through December 2021. RESULTS: Among 3667 patients with 3721 encounters, 69.4% were <3 years old; 44.3% <1 year old, 59.1% male; 27.1% Black; 57.8% White, 17.0% Hispanic; and 71.0 % had public insurance. The highest level of care was outpatient/emergency department in 60.7%, inpatient unit in 28.0% and intensive care in 11.4%. CAPs performed 79.1% in-person consultations and 20.9% remote consultations. Overall, the most frequent injuries were bruises (35.2%), fractures (29.0%), and traumatic brain injuries (TBI) (16.2%). Abdominal (1.2%) and spine injuries (1.6%) were uncommon. TBI was diagnosed in 30.6% of infants but only 8.4% of 1-year old children. In 68.2% of cases a report to child protective services (CPS) was made prior to CAP consultation; in 12.4% a report was made after CAP consultation. CAPs reported no concern for abuse in 43.0% of cases and mild/intermediate concern in 22.3%. Only 14.2% were categorized as definite abuse. CONCLUSION: Most children in CAPNET were <3 years old with bruises, fractures, or intracranial injuries. CPS reports were frequently made prior to CAP consultation. We build and analyse the network of 100 top-cited nodes (research papers and books from Google Scholar; the strength or citation of the nodes range from about 44 000 up to 100) starting in early 1980 until last year. These searched publications (papers and books) are based on Quantum Annealing Computation and Information categorized into four different sets: (A) Quantum/Transverse Field Spin Glass Model, (B) Quantum Annealing, (C) Quantum Adiabatic Computation and (D) Quantum Computation Information in the title or abstract of the searched publications. We fitted the growth in the annual number of publication (np) in each of these four categories, A–D, to the form np∼exp⁡(t/τ), where t denotes the time in years. We found the scaling time τ to be of the order of about 10 years for categories A and C, whereas τ is of the order of about 5 years for categories B and D. Structural equation modelling (SEM) is a popular multivariate analysis tool in marketing research that makes it possible to estimate both latent variables and their relationships. Variance-based (PLS) and covariance-based (CB) approaches are equal analysis methods based on recent methodological developments in PLS-SEM. The present study aims to eliminate the assumed methodological barriers of PLS-SEM and provide the domestic scientific community with a unified glossary and set of terms. The second part of the study examines SEM-related management articles published between 2016 and 2020. A distribution and thematic analysis revealed that the higher the prestige of the journal, the higher the SEM-publication ratio. Also, neither the chosen SEM methodology nor the analytics software were specified. Finally, a visualisation of research networks indicated that just a few scientific communities applied an SEM methodology in their research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current development of science is characterized by a global trend of scientific collaboration (SC). However, this growth has been mostly linked to intra-national cooperation. Several factors including geographic, institutional, and social proximities have been identified as key for promoting or hinder collaboration among scholars. Based on these premises, the present study analyses the co-authorship and affiliation relationships among geography education researchers in Latin America, exploring through a general trend and social network analysis, the characteristics of SC in geography education. For this purpose, 1774 articles (922 co-authored) published within the region were included as part of the data used for understanding the structure of SC. The results showed an increasing and dominant pattern of co-authoring in the region, but mostly developed at the local and national scale, with scarce intra-regional research. Moreover, the network analysis showed that there are some institutions with a dominant role in the production of research, and a loose network structure of research that could foster diverse perspectives on the field. These findings offer opportunities for thinking about how to enhance future SC processes in the region to strengthen the development of geography education research based on a regional collaborative approach. This case study traces the evolution of the Make Film History project, an award-winning archival resource which gives emerging filmmakers and educators in the UK and Ireland access to 270 films for creative reuse on course-related projects. It explores the barriers to the creative reuse of audiovisual archive material in education; and how the project overcame these with the support of our project partners at the participating archives to create a new, sustainable model for creative reuse in a range of educational settings and in partnership with film festivals. ObjectivesThis study sought to determine clinician and scientist involvement in heart failure (HF) clinical research and to describe the challenges of conducting clinical trials in the United States.BackgroundImprovements in the current capability, potential, and deficiencies of the HF clinical research infrastructure in the United States are needed in order to enhance efficiency and impact.MethodsThe Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA) distributed an electronic survey regarding HF clinical trial activity for the purpose of understanding the barriers that exist to conducting high-quality HF clinical research.ResultsOverall, 1,794 HFSA members were queried, and 434 members (24%) completed surveys, whereas a total of 7,589 individuals with interest in HF were queried, and 615 completed surveys. Of the respondents, 410 (67%) were actively engaged in HF research and 120 (20%) were interested in research. Most respondents, 270, were physicians (44%); 311 of the total (76% of the total and 80% of physicians) practiced in academic institutions; 333 respondents (81%) had served as principal investigators and 73 (18%) as site coordinators. Respondents active in clinical research usually participated in 1 to 5 trials and enrolled 1 to 20 patients annually. Institutional review board (IRB) approval typically required 3 months, and contract completion required 3 to 6 months per site. The greatest barriers to research were insufficient site budgets, delay in contracting, inability to find participants meeting trial entry criteria, and unavailability of qualified study coordinators.ConclusionsMany U.S. clinical research sites are constrained by budgetary, staffing, and contractual issues. The HFSA Research Network seeks to unify interested sites and deconstruct barriers to permit high-value HF research.

The Cancer Research Network (CRN) is a consortium of 12 research groups, each affiliated with a nonprofit integrated health care delivery system, that was first funded in 1998. The overall goal of the CRN is to support and facilitate collaborative cancer research within its component delivery systems. This paper describes the CRN's 20-year experience and evolution. The network combined its members' scientific capabilities and data resources to create an infrastructure that has ultimately supported over 275 projects. Insights about the strengths and limitations of electronic health data for research, approaches to optimizing multidisciplinary collaboration, and the role of a health services research infrastructure to complement traditional clinical trials and large observational datasets are described, along with recommendations for other research consortia.

AbstractObjectives To investigate general practitioners’ (GPs’) willingness to participate in long-term medical research and in research networks (RNs).Design and setting Cross-sectional survey among German GPs around Halle-Wittenberg and Leipzig in 2020.Subjects Random sample of 905 GPs.Main outcome measures and results Response rate 37%, 69% female. Overall, 57% were interested in participating in medical research, 34% in an active role in a RN. Interest in RN participation was positively associated with male sex, younger age, previous experiences in medical research, being involved in teaching undergraduates, and having qualification in a further specialty. Main motivators were improving patient care, giving a more realistic picture of GP care, and carrying out research on topics within their own interest areas and a reliable contact person at the leading institution. Most GPs were not afraid of reduced earnings; however, time investment was the main barrier for participation. GPs were willing to dedicate twice as much time to research when remuneration was offered. High rated topics were polypharmacy, chronic diseases, drug safety and adverse drug reactions.Conclusion GPs are interested to participate in practice-based research. The study results providing useful and generalizable insights in barriers and motivators should be considered when building and running GP-RNs.KEY POINTSThere is a difference between general practitioners’ (GPs’) overall interest in clinical research and their job and socio-demographic related readiness to participate in research networks (RNs).GPs are interested in RNs when it is a resource of and leading to enhanced patient-oriented care.GPs are willing to dedicate twice as much time to research when remunerated.GPs need a reliable counterpart within the leading institution.

Purpose: While the intellectual and scientific rationale for research collaboration has been articulated, a paucity of information is available on a strategic approach to facilitate the collaboration within a research network designed to reduce health disparities. This study aimed to (1) develop a conceptual model to facilitate collaboration among biostatisticians in a research network; (2) describe collaborative engagement performed by the Network's Data Coordinating Center (DCC); and (3) discuss potential challenges and opportunities in engaging the collaboration. Methods: Key components of the strategic approach will be developed through a systematic literature review. The Network's initiatives for the biostatistical collaboration will be described in the areas of infrastructure, expertise and knowledge management and experiential lessons will be discussed. Results: Components of the strategic approach model included three Ps (people, processes and programs) which were integrated into expert management, infrastructure management and knowledge management, respectively. Ongoing initiatives for collaboration with non-DCC biostatisticians included both web-based and face-to-face interaction approaches: Network's biostatistical capacities and needs assessment, webinar statistical seminars, mobile statistical workshop and clinics, adjunct appointment program, one-on-one consulting, and on-site workshop. The outreach program, as a face-to-face interaction approach, especially resulted in a useful tool for expertise management and needs assessment as well as knowledge exchange. Conclusions: Although fostering a partnered research culture, sustaining senior management commitment and ongoing monitoring are a challenge for this collaborative engagement, the proposed strategies centrally performed by the DCC may be useful in accelerating the pace and enhancing the quality of the scientific outcomes within a multidisciplinary clinical and translational research network.

Funding for large research initiatives, such as those funded through the National Institutes of Health U mechanism, has increased since 2010; however, there is little published research on how to evaluate the success of such initiatives. Here, we describe the collaborative evaluation planning process undertaken by the Interactions Core of the Collaborating for the Advancement of Interdisciplinary Research in Benign Urology (CAIRIBU) research community, a clinical and translational research initiative funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Evaluation is necessary to measure the impact of our work and to allow for continuous improvement efforts of CAIRIBU activities and initiatives. We developed and implemented an iterative seven-step process that engaged the Interactions Core, NIDDK program staff, and grantees at each step of the planning process. Challenges faced in planning and implementing the evaluation plan included the time burden on investigators to submit new data for evaluations, finite time and resources for evaluation work, and the development of infrastructure for the evaluation plan. We call on funding agencies to include more explicit requirements for evaluation participation from grantees, as well as dedicated funding to support the evaluation process, in future funding opportunity announcements for large research consortia.

Building capacity of researchers and practitioners in the dissemination and implementation (D&I) of evidence-based interventions is greatly needed to improve cancer prevention and control. A diverse workforce trained in D&I science is critical for improving cancer outcomes and reducing cancer-related health disparities. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network (CPCRN) Scholars Program aimed at training students, researchers, and practitioners in D&I for cancer prevention and control launched in 2021. The purpose of this paper is to describe the creation of the training program, curriculum, and evaluation plans, and to present the baseline results and lessons learned. CPCRN investigator and partner input and formative interviews (n = 16) with assistant professors, postdoctoral fellow, doctoral and undergraduate students, and a program manager guided development of the program. Twenty of 24 applicants were accepted into the inaugural year of the program. The majority of accepted scholars identified as female (80%) and were graduate students (50%). Thirty-five percent were of racially diverse backgrounds. Most self-rated their previous D&I experience and competencies at a beginner level. The multi-step approach used for development of this training program and lessons learned will be helpful for others collaborating on preparing the research and practice workforce in D&I science. Summary. Around the last few decades, nursing culture has seen significant changes all over the world. Nurses are increasingly required to comprehend and perform research, as well as to base their professional practice on research results, or to practice evidence-based nursing. Evidence-based nursing is described as the use of the most up-to-date clinical data in making patient-care choices, and such data is typically derived from nurse and other health-care professional research. Some studies [1, 2] have found a correlation between nursing research, evidence-based practice, and improved nursing care quality. The aim of the study – to examine recent literature on the effectiveness and feasibility of nursing research on public health quality, as well as to demonstrate the value of research in identifying and solving important nursing problems in Ukraine. Materials and Methods. For the previous 10 years, an examination of available information resources on the Internet and international professional periodicals has been conducted. The methods of analytical-comparative analysis and information search are used. Results. The nursing profession's culture has shifted considerably during the last few decades. Scientific advances that influence our understanding of health, disease, and symptoms, as well as novel diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, continue be in progress. Nurses' practice, research, and education are all changing. In reality, creative, collaborative, evidence-based care models can create new opportunities for higher educated nurses with knowledge, leadership and team-building skills, as well as ability to do study and research. To illustrate the value of nursing care, nursing research data can provide a foundation for clinical practice and improve the knowledge base of nurses in science on symptoms, health, self-management, and end-of-life palliative care, as well as behavioral health. Personalized, integrative, and technology teaching and learning can help students develop creative and critical thinking abilities, ethical and culturally inclusive foundations for nursing practice, teamwork and communication skills, and improve the quality of lifelong learning. Nurses in today's society must continue to study throughout their careers in order to be able to reflect on, analyze, and adapt their clinical practice based on the findings of systematic nursing and health-care research. Abstract Background Research networks offer multidisciplinary expertise and promote information exchange between researchers across Europe. They are essential for the European Union’s (EU) health information system as providers of health information and data. The aim of this mapping exercise was to identify and analyze EU research networks in terms of health data collection methods, quality assessment, availability and accessibility procedures. Methods A web-based search was performed to identify EU research networks that are not part of international organizations (e.g., WHO-Europe, OECD) and are involved in collection of data for health monitoring or health system performance assessment. General characteristics of the research networks (e.g., data sources, representativeness), quality assessment procedures, availability and accessibility of health data were collected through an ad hoc extraction form. Results Fifty-seven research networks, representative at national, international or regional level, were identified. In these networks, data are mainly collected through administrative sources, health surveys and cohort studies. Over 70% of networks provide information on quality assessment of their data collection procedures. Most networks share macrodata through articles and reports, while microdata are available from ten networks. A request for data access is required by 14 networks, of which three apply a financial charge. Few networks share data with other research networks (8/49) or specify the metadata-reporting standards used for data description (9/49). Conclusions Improving health information and availability of high quality data is a priority in Europe. Research networks could play a major role in tackling health data and information inequalities by enhancing quality, availability, and accessibility of health data and data sharing across European networks.

ObjectiveWe describe the rationale, development, and progress on the Community and Patient Partnered Research Network (CPPRN). The CPPRN builds on more than a decade of partnered work and is designed to promote health equity by developing partnered research on behavioral health and social risk factors in Los Angeles and New Orleans.SettingA community-academic partnership across Los Angeles County and New Orleans.MethodsReview of rationale, history, structure, activities and progress in applying community partnered participatory research (CPPR) to CPPRN.FindingsPatient and community stakeholders participated in all phases of development, including local and national activities. Key developments include partnered planning efforts, progress on aggregating a large, de-identified dataset across county agencies, and development of an information technology-supported screening approach for behavioral and social determinants in health care, social, and community-based settings.ConclusionThe CPPRN represents a promising approach for research data networks, balancing the potential benefit of information technology and data analytic approaches while addressing potential risks and priorities of relevant stakeholders.
