In Anatolia, Kars is one of the cities where tourism activities have gained importance in recent years, bearing various architectural features of the Ottoman and Russian periods. Conservation and inventory studies for historical buildings in Kars, which started in the early 1970s at the building scale, have recently begun to be taken under protection with building and street-scale conservation practices, especially with the impact of tourism. At this point, the study aims to reveal the conservation practices that have recently become increasingly visible in the city and the role of tourism in urban conservation. In this study, which adopts a qualitative research design, various data collection techniques have been used. A descriptive analysis of these data has been conducted. The results of the study show that in addition to the historical buildings with architectural value due to the impact of tourism, many buildings bearing traces of cultural heritage that have become dilapidated and abandoned to their fate have been taken under protection with restorations of different scales in recent years, while on the other hand, historical buildings have started to gain economic value. In this context, it is revealed that the cultural geography of the city has started to change in recent years and the role of conservation practices at different scales on tourism has increased. Ülkemizde sayıca en fazla sayıda bulunan tarihi yapıların başında gelen geleneksel konutların korunması, büyük çoğunluğu kullanım dışı kalması sebebiyle zor olmaktadır. Ancak bu yapıların yaşatılması ve kullanılması hem korunmanın sağlanmasına hem de kent panoramasında sürdürülebilirliğe imkân vermektedir. Geleneksel konutların birçoğunun günümüz konfor koşullarına cevap verememesi bunların kullanım dışı kalmasına sebebiyet verirken yeniden işlevlendirilerek kullanılabilmeleri de sürdürülebilir mimariye sahip olduklarını göstermektedir. Çalışmada Çatalca’da bulunan geleneksel bir konut değerlendirilmiş, belgelemesi yapılmış ve meydana gelen bozulmalar tespit edilmiştir. Yerinde yapılan incelemeler ve karşılaştırmalı çalışmalar ile restitüsyon önerisi getirilmiş, uygun olan müdahale biçimleri belirlenerek restorasyon kararları verilmiştir. Yapının mevcut fonksiyonu ile kullanımı değerlendirilmiş fakat farklı bir işlev vererek kullanılmasının konutun yaşatılmasında daha etkin olacağı değerlendirilmiştir. Araştırmada geleneksel bir konutun yaşatılabilmesi ile en doğru işlevin verilmesi amaçlanmış, konumu ve mevcut durumu değerlendirilerek konutun yaşatılması ön planda tutulmuştur. Yapılara yönelik işlev değişikliği önerilerinde nelere dikkat edilmesi gerektiği de ayrıca açıklamıştır.

Stream corridors, which have been used as waste discharge areas since the Industrial Revolution, have become invisible in uncontrolled developing cities due to rapid population growth. Most of the urban stream corridors have been enclosed in concrete canals, covered and their beds have been changed. Streams, which lost most of their natural functions as a result of pollution and the aforementioned processes, became a source of problems as a result of the pressures they were subjected to. However, flood control, recreational potential, being a biodiversity reserve area, etc. Due to the benefits they provide to the ecosystem with these services, urban river corridors are areas that need to be improved and brought back to the city and the ecosystem. With this approach, awareness of urban river corridors has increased for nearly 30 years and improvement efforts have started to gain momentum by reintegrating the corridors into ecosystems. The study area, Poligon Stream, is an urban river system that has been squeezed into a concrete canal under intense urbanization pressure and has been cut off from the ecosystem by being covered in some parts and causing floods that cause loss of life and property. This study presents restorative and rehabilitative design proposals for the reintegration of Poligon Creek with the green infrastructure approach into the ecosystem and the city. The study was carried out with two different approaches. In order to improve the destructive floods caused by the Polygon Stream in the short term, a rehabilitation project was prepared primarily to improve the current situation, and a second restoration project was proposed in order to set an example for the possibility of rehabilitating the area and reintroducing it to nature in the long term and to set an example for the correct use of the river corridors in new urban settlements. The restoration project also includes the case for the design of urban rivers in accordance with ecological principles before they are under pressure of construction. As a result of the study, rehabilitation and restoration projects were discussed and compared with the current situation, and various suggestions were made for improvement. As a result, in order to create a healthy urban ecosystem, it has been seen that ecological-based approaches will give much better results; as for large-scale planning decisions, the resilience of cities to disasters will increase with the support of green infrastructure systems, and existing natural resources can be used more sustainably and efficiently. It is seen that caravanserais, which have a long history, increased in number during the period when the Silk Road gained importance. With the increase in urbanization, these buildings, which were located far from the city centers, were replaced by inns over time. Caravanserai structures built for accommodation purposes were also used for trade. It is aimed to ensure active use of the caravanserais, which lost their importance after the Ottoman period, by giving them a new function today. The scope of these structures, which were repaired with contemporary interventions, was determined and the adaptations of the caravanserais in question were examined. The literature review of the structures was made on the National Thesis Center and Google Scholar sites, and visual scanning was also made on the Pinterest site. Contemporary intervention methods applied to the building were separated and the current status of the building after the intervention was determined. By trying to reveal the reasons for choosing repair types that try to capture the original architectural language and contemporary intervention methods due to the needs of the building in terms of aesthetics, statics, etc., it was aimed to find an answer as to which repair method is healthier. Preservation and conservation endeavors aimed at historical structures hold significant importance in transmitting cultural and historical legacies to future generations, functioning as custodians of societal memory. This research meticulously assesses the current condition of a traditional mansion situated in the Çatalca district of Istanbul, outlining restoration strategies to restore its original character. Despite the burgeoning residential development in Çatalca, the rapid onset of structural decay poses a tangible threat to the preservation of its historical heritage, necessitating a focused examination of relevant structures in the area. Thorough documentation, meticulous surveys, archival research, and on-site inspections have been conducted, leading to the formulation of comprehensive restoration proposals and intervention strategies. Recognizing the distinctive attributes of the mansion, it becomes apparent that its restoration should prioritize maintaining its original function rather than exploring alternative uses. Furthermore, the examination uncovers numerous alterations and misguided interventions over time, emphasizing the urgent need for concerted preservation endeavors. The transformation of heritage buildings within the scope of energy efficiency studies has become a serious research area in recent years. This study aims to emphasize the importance of analysis, monitoring and control of the current state of the building in interventions to be applied while protecting a heritage building. Within the scope of this purpose, it presents the energy performance monitoring process in a historical building as a case study. Tiryakizade Süleyman Ağa Mosque, which is an 18th century structure located in Eskişehir's Odunpazarı district, has a multifunctional use as a cafeteria and a mosque The energy performance monitoring of the building, whose user density is variable depending on the variety of functions, was carried out in 2022 using the discrete/repetitive period method. Outdoor climate data of the building location, indoor temperature (°C), relative humidity (%), user presence (%), on/off status of lighting elements (%), gas consumption (kWh), thermal transmittance coefficients of building elements (W/m2K) were monitored using appropriate devices and methods. The building monitoring data obtained from all seasons were examined according to the indoor thermal comfort conditions in the standards evaluated according to the international standards ASHRAE 55 and ISO 7730. It has been determined that the case in question does not meet the thermal comfort conditions in the standards at a high rate. Parameters such as building envelope, impermeability and user factor for the determination reached were evaluated and detailed research points were determined for further studies. This research aimed to uncover the traditional, cultural, and artistic significance of the endangered handmade carpet repairing profession within its historical context. Employing the historical case study method, the study delves into both the present state and past evolution of this profession. Data collection primarily relied on document analysis, encompassing printed publications, accessible e-archive materials, and historical records related to the profession. The study was bound by the limitations of its data sources and the chosen keywords for electronic literature searches. The document analysis revealed a comprehensive dataset comprising 2 books, 1 book chapter, 2 articles, 3 papers, 3 master's theses, 1 proficiency in art thesis, 20 Ottoman archive documents, 3 newspaper articles, 3 photographs, 2 stereographs, and 1 postcard. These documents underwent meticulous descriptive analysis and are presented chronologically in tabular form. In conclusion, the study yielded significant insights into the current state of the handmade carpet repairing profession in Türkiye and its historical journey, tracing back to as early as 1686. One of the types of civil buildings that have the most important place in our social life is traditional residences. Housing gives traces of a family's history, social life and culture of a society. Traditional houses have an important place in terms of sustainability for social and cultural values that have an important place in the protection of our cultural heritage. Zile is one of the leading cities in terms of cultural heritage of Tokat. One of these cultural heritage building types is traditional houses. The houses reflect the history, culture and art of a city. Traditional residences in the district center of Zile are concentrated on the outskirts of the castle. The residences are located within the urban protected area. One of these traditional residences is Emine Tekgöz House. The house is in plan type with an interior sofa and there are rooms around the sofa. The building has a two-storey facade and the upper floor is in the form of a flat overhang. Killit (Dereici), which is largely abandoned today, is an Assyrian village thought to have a population of more than 20,000 spread around the world. The Kilit (Dereiçi) village of Savur stands out as a rare example in the world with its multi-identity structure. The street façades of this Assyrian village, which has such cultural importance, can be clearly seen today, due to various factors. The aim of the study is to investigate the damage patterns and the factors affecting the durability of Kilit (Dereici) street facades (Old Bazaar). For this purpose, observational detection method was used and the findings were presented based on the dictionary of stone deterioration patterns prepared by ICOMOS-ISCS,2008. As a result of the study, the most intense deteriorations observed on the street facades; cement-induced faulty repairs made between the joints of the stone blocks on the facades and ‘crack, disintegration, erosion, ‘missing part, discolouration’ on the stone surfaces exposed to climate impact for a long time.

Historical buildings damaged due to natural disasters and man-made destruction are restored to have the most similar appearance to their original state. At the same time, architecture students conduct research and gather information on these buildings to learn about the restoration process. However, conditions such as pandemics, diseases, dangers, and adverse weather conditions that restrict accessibility prevent students from accessing these buildings. This study aims to overcome the access difficulties experienced by architecture students during the examination of historical buildings in the restoration courses by utilizing Virtual Reality (VR) and especially to teach the measurement techniques in the restoration course in a virtual environment with remote access. Within the scope of the study, the Historic Safranbolu Tannery Building, whose data collection process was completed before restoration, was modeled with its actual dimensions, and transferred to the VR environment. For students to work together interactively in this building, we implemented virtual versions of traditional measuring tools such as tape measure, water hose, plumb and whiteboard into the system. Thus, unlike other studies in the literature in the field of architectural restoration, a virtual educational environment has been created in which multiple students interact with each other simultaneously as if they were in the same environment, despite being in physically different environments. In the post-experiment questionnaires, it was observed that the participants generally had a positive perspective on the developed method. The system achieved an average score of 88.62% across a comprehensive set of 14 statements within the questionnaire. In this study, an optimization model has been developed to plan the restoration works envisaged to be done in historical buildings. There are very few studies in the literature on modeling the restoration works of historical monuments and cultural heritages, and most of these studies are based on multi-criteria decision-making models that aim to prioritize the works to be done. Restoration of historical monuments is an expensive and long process. Considering the cultural, social and economic importance of the buildings under the assumption that the works under restoration will be closed to visitors, the importance of optimizing the restoration works is understood. However, no study has been found in the operations research literature that deals with this problem in the scope mentioned. Where the minimum set of actions required to correct defects in a building is termed a 'work', it can be assumed that there may be more than one 'work' due to different defects in a building. Restoration works need to be assigned to work packages and scheduled according to the limited budget allocated for the restoration of the works. Since the budget is limited, the entire budget allocated for a certain period is reserved for only one work package. That is, work packages cannot be executed in parallel, a new work package cannot be started before a work package is completed. It is conceivable that similar types of work could be done by the same teams. There are economic advantages for similar works to be done by the same teams for different historical buildings located at close distances to each other. Under the assumption that the building will remain closed to use/visit before all the restoration works on a work are completed, it can be aimed to complete the restoration works of the buildings as early as possible. In this context, with the developed mathematical model, it is aimed to assign the works to the work packages by taking into account their similarity and geographical proximity, thus making optimal assignment and scheduling under limited budget conditions. Bu çalışmada tarihi Tokat Deveci Hanı’nın hasar görmüş tonozu için geleneksel malzeme dışında çelik konstrüksiyon ile sağlamlaştırma önerisi hazırlanmıştır. Yapı sonlu elemanlar yöntemiyle SAP2000 programı kullanılarak modellenerek statik ve dinamik açıdan yapısal analizleri gerçekleştirilmiştir. Analizlerde literatürde verilen malzeme özellikleri ve deprem yönetmeliğinin ilgili formülleri kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlar deformasyon ve gerilme haritaları üzerinden tartışılmıştır. Bu veriler ışığında hasarlı tonozlu yada benzer konstrüksiyona sahip yapılar için geçici yada kalıcı olarak çelikle sağlamlaştırma-tamamlama uygulamalarının mevcut yapının sismik performansına olumlu yönde etkisinin olduğu görülmüştür.

Historic environments are cultural monuments that contain the traces of cities over time and their tangible and intangible values. Reflecting the building material, construction technique, aesthetics, social, cultural and economic characteristics of the period in which they were built, the buildings have survived to the extent that they adapt to the changes in time. It has been determined that one of the main problems in the restoration of the building, which is refunctionalized according to today's needs, is 'how to adapt the new to the existing texture, how to establish the old-new relationship'. In this context, architectural design approaches for new buildings/additions in the historic environment were analyzed. Since 1931, international principles, standards and declarations have been compiled. The industrial heritage in the Grade 3 archaeological site in Cumhuriyet Quarter, Tarsus District, Mersin Province is the study area of Boğaziçi University Gözlükule Excavations Research Center. The research design is based on the intervention decisions taken in the restoration of the building, design criteria and the impacts of the socioeconomic changes of the city on the building. Chemical changes, insects, microorganisms, excess heat, light, humidity, and storage or display errors all contribute to the decay and deterioration of historical artifacts. If restoration of historical artifacts damaged for any reason is impractical in the short term, basic conservation procedures must be implemented, and the artifact should be kept in a proper environment. The restoration of calligraphy plates should be undertaken by a team that comprises calligraphers, in addition to restorers of ancient works. Since restoration works often overlook this issue, many historic calligraphy signs suffer a loss of their artistic value. Apart from official institutions, freelance restorers who primarily work in the antique, auction, collector, and secondhand markets have also received training. Nonetheless, due to a substantial number of these professionals working for commercial enterprises, they may not demonstrate adequate sensitivity and precision in the restoration of calligraphy pieces. This study aims to highlight fundamental principles for conserving and restoring original calligraphy works and the problematic practices present in the commercial art industry. In this study, a new posterior dynamic stabilization implant, which can help stabilize the spine normally, was designed using CAD commercial software programs and its biomechanical effects were determined and compared with the finite element (FE) method. Friction coefficient, material model, convergence analysis, loading and boundary conditions are defined for FE analysis. Two different implant and device components that maintain the range of motion within the standard limits were created with the SOLIDWORKS program, and ABAQUS CAD simulation program and MATLAB program were used together to calculate the range of motion. All implants are designed by choosing titanium material, the rod, screw, pin and nut components connecting the L4-L5 vertebrae. Lumbar spine models that are healthy and treated with two different implants were simulated under physiological conditions using scan data from computed tomography (CT). The range of motion, adjacent level effect and restoration percentages were calculated for all designed devices in six different directions. In the design of implant parts, 70% restoration percentage, which is an acceptable value in the movement of the spine with the implant, has been tried to be achieved in all directions. It has been determined that the device with the optimum data obtained provides more restoration in Z and Y directions. Restoration values are 33% for extantion, 53% for flexion, 55% and 68% for axial rotations and lateral bending, respectively. Conservation is very important in order to transfer the historical, cultural and social characteristics of the society to future generations. According to studies, protection is also necessary in terms of sustainability. Although there are cultural assets with important features in Catalca District, Turkey, the district has three different sites and rich traditional housing stock. Houses that have been deteriorating due to natural and human-caused reasons until today have also undergone changes due to changing population movements, especially as a result of population exchange. Göksel Bey Dwelling, located on the island no 237 parcel no 7, has also partially preserved its original form but has begun to lose its quality due to various interventions. It is important to conserve and maintain the structure and it is aimed to return the housing to its original state. For this reason, the housing was documented to identify the deterioration and problems that occurred. The documentation of the structure was carried out using the optical method "total station" and the classical building survey method. In accordance with the on-site survey and comparative examples, a restitution proposal was made for its original state. In accordance with the scientific grounds, intervention decisions were made to conserve, and a restoration project was prepared for the housing to be used its original residential function. The purpose of conservation is to preserve the physical structure of the buildings along with their symbolic and artistic values and to ensure their sustainability. As a study reflecting this view, the structural and decorative materials of the Ahirardi Mosque, located in the historical city center of Kütahya, were examined from an archeometric point of view. Physical, chemical and petrographic analyzes were applied to stone, brick, plaster, mortar and tile samples from different parts of the mosque, which was built in 1876 and underwent various interventions over time. Within the scope of archaeometric studies, the physical properties of stone and brick samples were determined by basic physical tests, and the amount of salt dissolved in water and salt (anion) types of the same samples were determined by conductometric analysis. Aggre- gate/binder in mortars and plasters and particle size distribution (granulometric) analyses in aggregate were applied. The petrographic properties of all structural samples were determined by optical microscopy analysis on thin sections. The stones used in the construction of the mosque are mostly ignimbrite rock type. As with the stones, petrographic analyzes of the brick samples also showed that they have a volcanic origin. Mortar samples, whose aggregate/binder compositions were examined, were classified under 2 groups and plaster samples were classified under 3 groups. It has been determined that the binder content of mortars and plasters, all of which are repair examples, consists of cement/ash, clay/ash mixture binders. Repair mortar and plaster samples, whose aggregate/binder contents are quite similar, reflect recent repairs and the original mortar and plaster of the mosque has been destroyed in these processes.
