1. Initial results from a hydroacoustic network to monitor submarine lava flows near Mayotte Island

Abstract

In 2019, a new underwater volcano was discovered at 3500 m below sea level (b.s.l.), 50 km east of Mayotte Island in the northern part of the Mozambique Channel. In January 2021, the submarine eruption was still going on and the volcanic activity, along with the intense seismicity that accompanies this crisis, was monitored by the recently created REVOSIMA (MAyotte VOlcano and Seismic Monitoring) network. In this framework, four hydrophones were moored in the SOFAR channel in October 2020. Surrounding the volcano, they monitor sounds generated by the volcanic activity and the lava flows. The first year of hydroacoustic data evidenced many earthquakes, underwater landslides, large marine mammal calls, along with anthropogenic noise. Of particular interest are impulsive signals that we relate to steam bursts during lava flow emplacement. A preliminary analysis of these impulsive signals (ten days in a year, and only one day in full detail) reveals that lava emplacement was active when our monitoring started, but faded out during the first year of the experiment. A systematic and robust detection of these specific signals would hence contribute to monitor active submarine eruptions in the absence of seafloor deep-tow imaging or swath-bathymetry surveys of the active area.

Abstract

The seismic crisis that began in May, 2018 off the coast of Mayotte announced the onset of a volcanic eruption that started two months later 50 km southeast of the island. This seismicity has since been taken as an indicator of the volcanic and tectonic activity in the area. In response to this activity, a network of stations was deployed on Mayotte over the past three years. We used the machine learning-based method PhaseNet to re-analyze the seismicity recorded on land since March 2019. We detect 50,512 events compared to around 6508 manually picked events between March 2019 and March 2021. We locate them with NonLinLoc and a locally developed 1-D velocity model. While eruptions are often monitored through the analysis of Volcano-Tectonic (VT) seismicity (2–40 Hz), we focus on the lower frequency, Long Period (LP) earthquakes (0.5–5 Hz), which are thought to be more directly related to fluid movement at depth. In Mayotte, the VT events are spread between two clusters, whereas the LP events are all located in a single cluster in the bigger proximal VT cluster, at depths ranging from 25 to 40 km. Moreover, while the VT earthquakes of the proximal cluster occur continuously with no apparent pattern, LP events occur in swarms that last for tens of minutes. We show that during the swarms, LP events generally migrate downward at a speed of 5 m/s. While these events do not appear directly linked to upward fluid migration, their waveform signature could result from propagation through a fluid-rich medium. They occur at a different location than VT earthquakes, also suggesting a different origin which could be linked to the Very Long Period events (VLP) observed above the LP earthquakes in Mayotte.

Abstract

Continuous seismological observations provide valuable insights to deepen our understanding of geological processes and geohazards. We present a systematic analysis of two months of seismological records using an AI-based Self-Supervised Learning (SSL) approach revealing previously undetected seismic events whose physical causes remain unknown but that are all associated with the dynamics of the Mayotte submarine volcano. Our approach detects and classifies known and new event types, including two previously unknown eruptive sequences displaying properties similar to other sequences observed at underwater and aerial volcanoes. The clustering workflow identifies seismic events that would be difficult to observe using conventional classification approaches. Our findings contribute to the understanding of submarine eruptive processes and the rare documentation of such events. We further demonstrate the potential of SSL methods for the analysis of seismological records, providing a synoptic view and facilitating the discovery of rarely observed events. 9. Citizen Science for Disaster Risk Governance: Towards a Participative Seismological Monitoring of the Mayotte Volcanic Crisis

Abstract

The United Nations (UN) Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 aims to mitigate natural disasters, specifically in developing regions. It promotes the adoption of people-centered disaster risk reduction approaches. Hence, citizen science represents an interesting tool to engage populations in the mitigation of disaster risk, through data collection and analysis, and in the dissemination of scientific and safety information. Herein, we evaluate the potential and feasibility of a citizen science project on the island of Mayotte (in the Mozambique Channel). Mayotte has been experiencing an unexpected volcano-seismic crisis since 2018, which has generated strong anxiety in the population. To address this, we have developed a citizen seismology program to engage Mayotte’s inhabitants in seismic data processing. First, we conducted an initial test of our protocol to identify seismic events with a set of university students. We then conducted 15 interviews with members of local administrations and associations to assess the potential for engaging the general population in this project. The results show that we are able to collect reliable data from citizens with non-professional backgrounds using the protocol designed in the project. We also show a strong demand for scientific information from Mayotte’s inhabitants, associated with a robust trust in science and scientists, despite the circulation of alternative explanations for the seismicity among the population. Based on these results, our citizen science project could be positively received by Mayotte’s inhabitants, if advertised adequately. Finally, we discuss the value of these results for disaster risk reduction in vulnerable territories.

10. Capturing Mayotte's deep magmatic plumbing system and its spatiotemporal evolution with volcano-tectonic seismicity

Abstract

Since 2018, an unexpected number of earthquakes have been occurring offshore Mayotte, in the Mozambique Channel. They are linked to the eruption of the Fani Maoré submarine volcano. Using a recently developed comprehensive automatic catalog, we explore two years of the volcano-tectonic (VT) seismicity between March 2019 and March 2021, and analyse in detail the active structures of the magmatic plumbing system using ~33,000 events. The VT earthquakes highlight three magma storage zones and two aseismic conduits that have never been observed before. The temporal evolution of the seismicity reveals a probable regime change in March 2020. While before, the plumbing system reacted to the drainage of magma from a deep reservoir and to the migration of magma towards the seafloor, it is now responding to new migrations of fluids and to the redistribution of the stress-load across the system's pre-existing faults. This analysis is key to better understanding long-term volcanism worldwide.

15. Combining hydro-acoustic sources and bathymetric differences to track the vent evolution of the Mayotte eruption, Mozambique Channel

Abstract

The majority of Earth volcanism takes place in the deep ocean. Deep-sea volcanoes are particularly complicated to study due to their remoteness. Very different methods can be used and their combination can lead to crucial information about submarine volcanoes behavior. In Mayotte, Comoros archipelago, efforts have been made to study and monitor the deep volcanic activity (∼3000 m) currently occurring east of Mayotte through various methods and campaigns on land and at sea. In October 2020, a line of 10 Ocean Bottom Seismometers was deployed during 10 days, leading to a hand-picked catalog of more than a thousand of hydro-acoustic signals, which have been associated with reactions between hot lava and deep cold ocean waters. During the same period, repeated swath bathymetry surveys were performed over an active lava flow field. We compare the time evolution of the hydro-acoustic events locations and bathymetry differences observed between each survey. While bathymetric information gives absolute location of new lava flows, hydro-acoustic events give detailed relative time variations leading to short-term spatial evolution. Bathymetric information thus provides snapshots of the eruptive area evolution at specific times, when hydro-acoustic signals show its continuous evolution. By combining both complementary analyses we are able to clearly define the detailed evolution of the lava flows pattern in the short time period of 10 days. Applied to the data already acquired on Mayotte since 2019, this method could allow us to estimate more precisely the volcano effusion rate and its evolution, giving further insights on the feeding system.

Abstract

The brutal onset of seismicity offshore Mayotte island North of the Mozambique Channel, Indian Ocean, that occurred in May 2018 caught the population, authorities, and scientific community off guard. Around 20 potentially felt earthquakes were recorded in the first 5 days, up to magnitude Mw 5.9. The scientific community had little pre-existing knowledge of the seismic activity in the region due to poor seismic network coverage. During 2018 and 2019, the MAYOBS/REVOSIMA seismology group was progressively built between four French research institutions to improve instrumentation and data sets to monitor what we know now as an on-going exceptional sub-marine basaltic eruption. After the addition of 3 medium-band stations on Mayotte island and 1 on Grande Glorieuse island in early 2019, the data recovered from the Ocean Bottom Seismometers were regularly processed by the group to improve the location of the earthquakes detected daily by the land network. We first built a new local 1D velocity model and established specific data processing procedures. The local 1.66 low VP/VS ratio we estimated is compatible with a volcanic island context. We manually picked about 125,000 P and S phases on land and sea bottom stations to locate more than 5,000 events between February 2019 and May 2020. The earthquakes outline two separate seismic clusters offshore that we named Proximal and Distal. The Proximal cluster, located 10km offshore Mayotte eastern coastlines, is 20 to 50 km deep and has a cylindrical shape. The Distal cluster start 5 km to the east of the Proximal cluster and extends below Mayotte's new volcanic edifice, from 50 km up to 25 km depth. The two clusters appear seismically separated, however our dataset is insufficient to firmly demonstrate this.

Abstract

Human activity causes vibrations that propagate into the ground as high-frequency seismic waves. Measures to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread changes in human activity, leading to a months-long reduction in seismic noise of up to 50%. The 2020 seismic noise quiet period is the longest and most prominent global anthropogenic seismic noise reduction on record. While the reduction is strongest at surface seismometers in populated areas, this seismic quiescence extends for many kilometers radially and hundreds of meters in depth. This provides an opportunity to detect subtle signals from subsurface seismic sources that would have been concealed in noisier times and to benchmark sources of anthropogenic noise. A strong correlation between seismic noise and independent measurements of human mobility suggests that seismology provides an absolute, real-time estimate of population dynamics.

Abstract

International audience; In May 2018, a seismic crisis started East of Mayotte which was widely felt on the island and has been linked to the discovery of a new active submarine edifice. In order to reconstruct the evolution of the crisis with more details on the active structures we re-analyze the seismicity from March 2019 to February 2021 and focus on its evolution throughout the eruption. We use a catalog built by using the neural network-based method PhaseNet, which considerably increased the number of detected earthquakes and enabled a deeper analysis of the seismicity variations. Moreover, the development of a new velocity model for the region allowed a precise location of these earthquakes using only land-stations data. We show that the geometry of the seismicity has evolved in the two main clusters of activity with a general decrease in activity in the proximal cluster and no decrease in activity in the distal cluster. Spatial evolutions of different sub-clusters can be identified over time. This analysis is essential to understand the dynamics of the volcanic and magmatic processes beneath Mayotte island and will provide crucial details on the dynamics of submarine eruptions.

33. Spatiotemporal Correlation Analysis of Noise-Derived Seismic Body Waves With Ocean Wave Climate and Microseism Sources.

Abstract

Seismic signals can be extracted from ambient noise wavefields by the correlation technique. Recently, a prominent P-type phase was observed from teleseismic noise correlations in the secondary microseism period band. The phase is named Pdmc in this paper, corresponding to its origin from the interference between the direct P waves transmitting through the deep mantle and the core (P and PKPab waves). We extract the phase by correlating noise records from two seismic networks in the Northern Hemisphere and locate the microseism sources that are efficient for the Pdmc construction in the South Pacific. We investigate the spatiotemporal links of the Pdmc signal with global oceanic waves and microseism sources. Interestingly, the correlation with wave height is higher in several regions surrounding the effective source region, rather than in the effective source region. The Pdmc amplitude is highly correlated with the power of the effective microseism sources. Also, it is apparently correlated with ineffective sources in the Southern Hemisphere and anticorrelated with sources in the Northern Hemisphere. We ascribe the correlation with the ineffective southern sources to the spatiotemporal interconnections of the southern sources. The anticorrelation with northern sources can be explained by the reverse seasonal patterns between the southern and northern sources and by that the northern sources impede the signal construction. The signal construction from noise correlations relies on the competition between the effective and ineffective sources, not just on the power of the effective sources. Abstract

International audience; The accuracy of Green's functions retrieved from seismic noise correlations in the microseism frequency band is limited by the uneven distribution of microseism sources at the surface of the Earth. As a result, correlation functions are often biased as compared to the expected Green's functions, and they can include spurious arrivals. These spurious arrivals are seismic arrivals that are visible on the correlation and do not belong to the theoretical impulse response. In this article, we propose to use Rayleigh wave spurious arrivals detected on correlation functions computed between European and United States seismic stations to locate microseism sources in the Atlantic Ocean. We perform a slant stack on a time distance gather of correlations obtained from an array of stations that comprises a regional deployment and a distant station. The arrival times and the apparent slowness of the spurious arrivals lead to the location of their source, which is obtained through a grid search procedure. We discuss improvements in the location through this methodology as compared to classical back projection of microseism energy. This method is interesting because it only requires an array and a distant station on each side of an ocean, conditions that can be met relatively easily.

Abstract

Mayotte island experienced a large volcanic eruption 50 km offshore in 2018–2021, creating the submarine volcano "Fani Maoré". The eruption was accompanied by intense seismicity at mantle depths (20–45 km), divided into a "proximal" and a "distal" cluster centered 10 and 30 km east from the island, respectively. Previous studies suggest that two separate magma reservoirs may lie at the top and bottom of the proximal cluster. Here, we assess whether two reservoirs are a mechanically viable explanation for the proximal cluster's truncated conical shape. We developed finite-element models of pressurized magma reservoirs in a 2D axisymmetric domain, modeling the reservoirs as compliant elastic ellipsoids embedded in an elastoplastic host rock. We find that, at these depths, extremely low friction is required to generate failure at realistically low reservoir pressures. This implies in turn that mechanical weakening must occur at these depths. The weakening could be induced by fractures or pore fluid overpressure in the volcanic system. We find that two superimposed reservoirs can generate a plastic domain between them, if they are spatially close enough. Several reservoir geometries (from spherical to sill-like) are plausible. A conical fracture domain is more likely to appear for reservoirs with opposite pressure loads (i.e. one inflating, one deflating). Given the geometrical match with the proximal seismicity cluster at Mayotte, we suggest that the shallower (Moho-depth) reservoir is inflating, creating a potential hazard for Mayotte island. • Two interacting magma reservoirs can explain the earthquake distribution near Mayotte. • A 20-km deep reservoir near the island may have inflated during the recent eruption. • Shear patterns between modeled magma reservoirs depend on the applied pressure loads. • The occurrence of mantle-deep earthquakes near Mayotte may indicate mantle weakening. Detections of pP and sP phase arrivals (the so-called depth phases) at teleseismic distance provide one of the best ways to estimate earthquake focal depth, as the P-pP and the P-sP delays are strongly dependent on the depth. Based on a new processing workflow and using a single seismic array at teleseismic distance, we can estimate the depth of clusters of small events down to magnitude Mb 3.5. Our method provides a direct view of the relative variations of the seismicity depth from an active area. This study focuses on the application of this new methodology to study the lateral variations of the Guerrero subduction zone (Mexico) using the Eielson seismic array in Alaska (USA). After denoising the signals, 1232 Mb 3.5 + events were detected, with clear P, pP, sP and PcP arrivals. A high-resolution view of the lateral variations of the depth of the seismicity of the Guerero--Oaxaca area is thus obtained. The seismicity is shown to be mainly clustered along the interface, coherently following the geometry of the plate as constrained by the receiver-function analysis along theMeso America Subduction Experiment profile. From this study, the hypothesis of tears on the western part of Guerrero and the eastern part of Oaxaca are strongly confirmed by dramatic lateral changes in the depth of the earthquake clusters. Abstract

Seismological detection methods are traditionally based on picking techniques. These methods cannot be used to analyse emergent signals where the arrivals cannot be picked. Here, we detect and locate seismic events by applying a beamforming method that combines multiple body-wave phases to USArray data. This method explores the consistency and characteristic behaviour of teleseismic body waves that are recorded by a large-scale, still dense, seismic network. We perform time-slowness analysis of the signals and correlate this with the time-slowness equivalent of the different body-wave phases predicted by a global traveltime calculator, to determine the occurrence of an event with no a priori information about it. We apply this method continuously to one year of data to analyse the different events that generate signals reaching the USArray network. In particular, we analyse in detail a low-frequency secondary microseismic event that occurred on 2010 February 1. This event, that lasted 1 d, has a narrow frequency band around 0.1 Hz, and it occurred at a distance of 150° to the USArray network, South of Australia. We show that the most energetic phase observed is the PKPab phase. Direct amplitude analysis of regional seismograms confirms the occurrence of this event. We compare the seismic observations with models of the spectral density of the pressure field generated by the interferences between oceanic waves. Abstract

Correlations of the ambient seismic field have been used successfully for tomographic imaging of the Earth on a wide range of scales. This is based on the theoretical and experimental observations that correlation functions computed between the signals recorded by two stations contain an approximation of the impulse response (Green's function) between these stations.Numerous seismic sensors have been installed during the last decades in California and have recorded continuously ambient seismic field. These signals give the opportunity to image the California upper crust structure using ambient noise correlations. For the time period between 2001 and 2016, we are able to compute the correlation tensor between hundred pairs of stations. We measure the group and phase velocity for Rayleigh and Love waves, on the ZZ and TT components, respectively for the period range 5 s to 20 s. The velocities at each period are regionalized using a regularized straight-ray scheme and the local dispersion curves for Love and Rayleigh waves are jointly inverted to obtain shear-wave velocity vs. depth profiles. The final 3D velocity model clearly highlights the Central Valley sedimentary basin as well as higher velocity in Coastal Ranges and the Sierra Nevada batholith.The waves that comprise the ambient field are subject to scattering due to the heterogeneous earth. It is possible to use the effects of scattering that do not correspond to the propagation between the two stations considered, to locate potential external sources of signal. We thus identify supplementary arrivals using array analysis to localize the source of scattering effects linked to strong structural variations. We are particularly interested in imaging scatters that result in coupling between the P-SV and SH systems because they are a consequence of lateral heterogeneities in Earth structure. For that reason, we are interested in components of the correlation tensor, different from the Vertical-Vertical component, and we expect the Radial/Vertical to Transverse components to be particularly helpful. Abstract

Human activity causes vibrations that propagate into the ground as high-frequency seismic waves. Measures to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread changes in human activity, leading to a months-long reduction in seismic noise of up to 50%. The 2020 seismic noise quiet period is the longest and most prominent global anthropogenic seismic noise reduction on record. While the reduction is strongest at surface seismometers in populated areas, this seismic quiescence extends for many kilometers radially and hundreds of meters in depth. This provides an opportunity to detect subtle signals from subsurface seismic sources that would have been concealed in noisier times and to benchmark sources of anthropogenic noise. A strong correlation between seismic noise and independent measurements of human mobility suggests that seismology provides an absolute, real-time estimate of population dynamics., P.K. was funded by a Royal Society University Research Fellowship (URF\R1\180377).
