Background: Since the consensus of ISAPP on the definition of the term "postbiotic" there has been an enthusiasm for publications in review form—their number being disproportionate to the primary research. The aim of this bibliometry is to analyze the bibliometric trends of this newfound interest in the field. Methods: Search of the PubMed database for review articles on postbiotics, published between November 2021 and June 2024. Results: Analysis was performed on 92 review articles, the number corresponding to 2.9 reviews per month. China, Poland, Italy, Iran and India had the maximum productivity among the 32 countries involved; 21 articles were published in 13 journals with the highest impact factor, while 45 were in 16 journals with an IF between 4.0 and 4.9. The authors were mainly affiliated to universities with specialization in both basic research and technology, as well as food science. The top five publications regarding the citations received, published in Foods (2), EBioMedicine, Biomolecules, and Front. Nutr., have collected between 138 and 109 citations. Conclusions: The ever-growing number of reviews regarding postbiotics is perhaps disproportionate to the actual original research in the field. Further clinical trials would extend and deepen the subject and facilitate the drowning of more robust conclusions in relation to their effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study examined review articles in medical sciences and analyzed their citations of retracted Iranian papers. This was a quantitative and applied study using scientometrics and descriptive cross-sectional approaches. Review articles' citation trends of retracted studies were investigated using the quantitative method, and the status of the mentioned citations was determined using the descriptive method. The study population comprised 53 review studies that cited 28 retracted Iranian articles. The current study on review articles citing retracted papers revealed that most citations in 2019 were in the form of systematic reviews and meta-analyses by Iranian authors. These articles were occasionally published in journals with a high credibility and impact factor. Although the most frequent reasons for article retraction in the present study were scientific misconduct, most of the citing review articles did not mention this issue. Further research is required to determine the impact of referencing retracted articles on the results of review articles, especially systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and randomized clinical trials (RCTs), regarding the reasons for retraction.

Unrecognised and unknown information needs can significantly impact on the quality of decision making, advice, and patient care. In the practice of veterinary medicine, additional information may be required in one or more of epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, control (risk reduction), and prevention (risk avoidance), in order to optimise patient care. Veterinary Evidence publishes Knowledge Summaries, which aim to answer a specific and focused clinical query by appraising the best available evidence published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. By presenting the evidence in a structured and easily digestible format, Knowledge Summaries enable veterinary professionals to stay informed and apply the best available evidence to their decision-making. To assist in the identification of unrecognised deficits and the generation of clinical queries Veterinary Evidence has developed a list of common conditions for each species, alongside the different categories of information. The aim is to prompt and support the generation of new clinical queries in a more systematic format. This resource sits alongside our species-based lists of clinical queries that have already been suggested by practicing veterinarians, veterinary nurses, and other paraprofessionals (see veterinaryevidence.org/index.php/ve/clinical-queries). We hope readers and prospective authors will use these resources to generate new clinical queries or as a starting point for writing their own Knowledge Summaries. Most of the papers published in Veterinary Evidence are Knowledge Summaries, but the journal has always accepted and will continue to accept and encourage other types of reviews and original research that provide evidence to inform clinical practice. For example, in this issue we have published a commentary paper by Professor Jonathan Elliott regarding the processes and evidence required for the registration of veterinary medicinal products which provides some important insights and debate into the publication of evidential information (Elliott, 2024). A Knowledge Summary may not always be the best format to synthesise and summarise evidence on a multifaceted topic; scoping reviews, systematic reviews, or narrative reviews maybe more appropriate. Munn et al. (2018) provide a useful account of scoping reviews and how they differ from traditional literature and systematic reviews. In particular, we are keen to receive articles on artificial intelligence applications, sustainability, and quality improvement in clinical practice, as the impact and importance of these topics grows. We are also making some changes to the presentation of Knowledge Summaries in Veterinary Evidence, to help readers more easily understand the details and context of the summarised evidence. In order to support everyone in appraising and understanding quantitative clinical studies, we will be publishing a glossary and guidance on basic statistical terms and tests on the journal website.

Drawing maps of co-word at different time periods under investigation illustrates changes and stability in the concepts and words related to the field of informatics. New concepts emerged as a recombination of existing words interacting with developments and new technologies. My goal in this editorial is to reflect on the practice of literature review in the administration field from a critical perspective. The literature review I am referring to is not just a set of techniques for conducting it; it is a collective doing among scholars, producing specific knowledge. By drawing on concepts such as fad, methodologism, and decolonial critique, we can conclude that contrary to the common belief among researchers, following rigid protocols in literature review does not necessarily lead to new knowledge. In this contribution, an empirical relationship between the number of review and research articles published per year was searched. The simple idea based on proportionality (linearity) between the numbers of both kinds of articles was expressed in terms of a quadratic relationship, in which the quadratic member can reflect negative or positive deviations from the assumed linearity. The quadratic relationship was able to describe beginning periods of research fields as well as their mature phases and to detect the unpredictably high number of review articles. This article and the related Feature Topic at Organizational Research Methods upcoming were motivated by the concern that despite the bourgeoning number and diversity of review articles, there was a lack of guidance on how to produce rigorous and impactful literature reviews. In this article, we introduce review research as a class of research inquiries that uses prior research as data sources to develop knowledge contributions for academia, practice and policy. We first trace the evolution of review research both outside of and within management including the articles published in this Feature Topic, and provide a holistic definition of review research. Then, we argue that in the plurality of forms of review research, the alignment of purpose and methods is crucial for high-quality review research. To accomplish this, we discuss several review purposes and criteria for assessing review research's rigor and impact, and discuss how these and the review methods need to be aligned with its purpose. Clarivate Analytics’ suppression of the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) for three history of economics journals in 2018 resulted from the publication of a single review article solicited for History of Economic Ideas (HEI). That episode highlights several connections between JIF pressures on authors and editors, on the practice of writing review articles, and on the field of history of economics. We examine the different roles and proliferation of review articles, discuss recent examples of review articles in the history of economics literature, and conclude with a brief discussion of review articles, in connection with the way historians of economics cite.

This paper concerns the development of a central tenet of modern biochemistry: that cellular metabolism coordinates biological energy supply through the cyclical making and breaking of "energy-rich" phosphate bonds. This interpretation of intermediary metabolism was comprehensively set forth in two review articles published nearly simultaneously (though independently) in early 1941 by German biochemist Fritz Lipmann and Danish biochemist Herman Kalckar. Lipmann and Kalckar first met in the early 1930s in Copenhagen, where they were in frequent contact until 1939, when both left Denmark. Despite the similar claims advanced in Lipmann's and Kalckar's reviews, the two men's presentations differed substantially with respect to their descriptions of "energy-rich" phosphate bonds and their target audiences. In order to explore the circumstances behind these divergences, this paper utilizes a "parallel lives" approach. By analyzing Lipmann's and Kalckar's lives in parallel, particular institutional contexts emerge as having been especially significant in shaping their differing interpretations of the power of phosphate bonds. The period that Lipmann spent in muscle researcher Otto Meyerhof's laboratory (1927-30) conditioned his physiological interpretation of the role of phosphate bonds in cellular energy metabolism. Kalckar's time at California Institute of Technology (1939-40)-- where he was in regular communication with chemists such as Linus Pauling--played the most significant role in his decision to present the power of phosphate bonds from a chemical perspective. Ultimately, an examination of the life stories behind Lipmann's and Kalckar's 1941 reviews illuminates how older physiological perspectives were combined with recent advances in theoretical chemistry to explain how energy flows through living organisms. A review article is an article in which the latest published works in a certain scientific field or the work of an individual researcher or research group are discussed, summarized, analysed, evaluated and synthesized. The preparation of reviews is complex, extensive and time-consuming. Due to this complexity, several people with different knowledge usually participate, and a librarian is also involved in the role of information specialist. The search process consists of the following steps: plan the review and document the search process, determine a clear and focused question, develop inclusion and exclusion criteria, carry out early scoping searches, identify the specific bibliographic databases, identify key search terms, identify appropriate subject headings (index terms), synonyms and free text words, use Boolean operators, parentheses and database-appropriate field codes, optimize the search, translate the search for other databases, screen titles and abstracts, obtain full-text papers, screen the full-text papers. As an example in practice, we will choose the planning and implementation of an inquiry in the field of oncology, which will determine the possible link between tobacco smoking and cervical cancer.

This study investigated rhetorical functions and their associated linguistic realizations in English review article abstracts. The analysis was based on a corpus of 100 English review article abstracts from linguistics and applied linguistics disciplines and followed a corpus-driven discourse analytic top-down approach. MAXQDA and WordSmith were used to code the moves and analyze their associated sub-corpora, respectively. The results of calculating range and frequency distributions showed that English conceptual review article abstracts use a rhetorical structure, different from that of research paper abstracts. This rhetorical organization is realized through a different set of moves, namely ) establishing the territory or area of study, 2) identifying the problem, 3) introducing the present research, 4) organizing the paper, and 5) concluding or reflecting. Moreover, each move was realized through a distinct set of sub-moves. In terms of range, the moves dealing with purpose and structure were the most widely present moves; in terms of frequency distribution, the move dealing with structure was the most frequent. Furthermore, the highly frequent use of plural self-mentions indicates that in review article abstracts, the emphasis is on research as a group activity inclusive of the researcher(s) and objects of study. In addition, the presence of ‘establishing the territory’, together with ‘identifying the problem’ can be seen as an attempt to sell the research. The quality of literature reviews can be highly variable, depending not only on the author’s knowledge of the topic but also their skill in navigating and synthesizing the literature. This paper discusses different types of review articles and provides information on how to improve the quality of literature reviews in chemistry, through better planning, rigorous literature searching, and thoughtful construction. Using these tools and techniques, authors will be able to craft higher quality, methodologically sound reviews that will more accurately reflect the state of the literature and will more clearly communicate that information to the reader. Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology Volume 2: Issue 1, Article 1, 2021. While Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology (TESK) was originally designed to fill a void in publishing applied information for practitioners in physical activity and sport, the TESK editors have determined a need to update the submission categories. The categories of Process of Science and Implementation Strategies have been retained, and three new types of submissions now will be accepted: Expedited Articles, Review Articles, and Case Studies. Process of Science submissions should seek to answer the question, "What was learned from the experience of performing the investigation?", while Implementation Strategies should address, "How can what was carried out be explained?" Required elements for both submission types are outlined along with guidelines for conducting peer-reviews. Expedited Articles can be submitted to TESK and undergo an accelerated review by the editors. Required elements and the peer review processes are also outlined for Review Articles and Case Studies. Introduction: Following surgical repair of distal radius fractures, mobilisation timeframes and interventions vary. Early mobilisation (<2 weeks postoperatively) usually includes range of motion exercises and may include recommendations to perform daily activities. The review investigated (i) how early mobilisation was recommended, particularly with respect to wrist use during daily activities and (ii) the efficacy and safety of early versus delayed mobilisation (< or ≥2 weeks). Methods: The study protocol was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42019136490). Five databases were searched for studies that compared early and delayed mobilisation in adults with volar plating of distal radius fractures. The Downs and Black Quality Index and the Template for Intervention Description and Replication checklist were used for quality evaluation. Effect sizes were calculated for range of movement, function and pain at 6–8, 10–12 and 26 weeks. A descriptive analysis of outcomes and mobilisation regimes was conducted. Results: Eight studies with a mean Quality Index score of 20 out of 28 (SD=5.6) were included. Performing daily activities was commonly recommended as part of early mobilisation. Commencing mobilisation prior to two weeks resulted in greater range of movement, function and less pain at up to eight weeks postoperatively than delaying mobilisation until two weeks or later. Discussion: Performance of daily activities was used alongside exercise to promote recovery but without clearly specifying the type, duration or intensity of activities. In combination with exercise, early daily activity was safe and beneficial. Performing daily activities may have discrete advantages. Hand therapists are challenged to incorporate activity-approaches into early mobilisation regimes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study assessed the research output on Bamboo for a period of 29 years (1989-2018). The web of science database has been used to retrieve worldwide publication records on bamboo research. The records were analysed using the descriptive statistics. Based on the retrieved data, various aspect of literature on bamboo research analysed and interpreted. The performance of the most productivity countries, authors, journals, Institution wise, and Growth rate and doubling time have assessed. The articles were classified as Research, review and others and grouped under 22 subjects to identify the subject coverage of bamboo research. The study found a positive growth in research and review article while very sharp decrement was observed. The growth rate and doubling period were estimated 8.5 and 8.34 respectively. Most of the articles written on Agriculture, Material Science, building technology and chemistry. M. Das (Presidency University, Department Life Science, Kolkata) is the most prolific primary author while R. Kumar (National Institute of Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineer, Silchar, India) mostly occurred as secondary author. Local and National collaboration mostly observed in the paper. India is the most productive country of world followed by china and Tamilnadu is most productive state of India. Review articles are an often neglected genre in scholarly communication. Though there was intense discussion about review articles in scientometrics in the 1970s and 1980s, we find less studies devoted to this genre within the last 20 years. Yet, recent discussions in other fields, such as linguistics, sociology or medicine imply that review articles are part of important debates about problems of research in academia, such as research quality or transparency. Against that background, the purpose of this paper is to review recent developments for the study of review articles in scientometrics and beyond, to discuss theoretical, conceptual and empirical accounts of how review articles can be defined, and to identify major methodological and conceptual challenges for studying review articles. Based on reviewing work and inputs received from of a workshop conducted at a Conference of the International Society of Informetrics in September 2019, we propose a research agenda for the study of review articles. We have identified six realms of study in this area: (1) the study of methodological caveats resulting from the usage of scholarly databases, (2) the study of field specific patterns of reception and usage of review articles, (3) the study of argumentative and textual structures of review articles, (4) the exploration of organizations and infrastructures for review articles, (5) the study of epistemic roles of review articles, and (6) the analysis of authorship patterns in review articles. The use of the journal impact factor for evaluation purposes has been widely challenged because of the simplistic algorithm involved in impact factor calculation. As a result, a journal's impact factor may be affected by many variables, such as highly cited review articles. In the present study, we aimed to investigate whether and to what extent review articles affect the impact factors of journals. We examined the citations of original research articles and review articles in the field of physics, and compared the impact factors of the journals Science, Nature, and Cell with and without citation counts of review articles included. The results showed that review articles consistently received higher numbers of citations than did original research articles. In addition, review articles accounted for 3–10% of the impact factors of these top journals. Based on our findings, we suggest that sophisticated methods, in addition to the impact factor, be employed for research evaluation purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Literature review articles provide a valuable mechanism for remaining informed amidst an ever-increasing body of scientific work. Condensing current advances into this disseminatable form is a critical activity for any research trainee. To systematize this multifaceted process, we present the "why, when, who, what, how, and where" of composing a literature review article. Commentaries include selection of a review topic, conducting modern literature searches using online databases, stepwise strategies for manuscript drafting, and prevention of plagiarism. This article deals with expectation dynamics in the field of synthetic biology. The article draws on scholarly review articles as the main material, complemented by expert interviews conducted with scholars from the field. The aim is to explore how expectations change over time and how they are used to justify and move the field. Drawing from conceptual advances of the sociology of expectations, I show how expectations are increasingly linked at different levels (the landscape, sector, and niche level) and how they support and justify the field among different audiences. The analysis shows that, while in the early period expectations supported different innovation paths and communities (such as chemical biology, protocell research, as well as bioengineering), bioengineering becomes the dominant representation in the second period. Linkages between expectation levels increase the relevance of bioengineering concepts, while the history type of review articles link bioengineering's past with the future of the field. Interviews and complementary material reveal that this reflects changes in the community as well as in the policy realm. Based on the material, it is argued that review articles can play a role in the formation of collective expectations and in the construction of scientific collectives, such as synthetic biology. • The article shows the relevance of review articles as a rather neglected material for studying visions and expectations. • The article combines conceptual advances from the sociology of expectations with genre studies in order to explore writing practices of vision building. • Exploring this material of review articles, the study shows how expectations are closely related to textual practices of ordering. • Studying the field of synthetic biology, the article shows how uses of expectations change over time. Wiegand (1984) introduced dictionary criticism as a formal component of a general theory of lexicography. Since then many scholars have focused on various aspects of dictionary criticism. In this article a distinction is made between two major types of dictionary criticism, i.e. the review of metalexicographical literature and the review of dictionaries. In the review of dictionaries different types can be identified, i.e. a short discussion without a critical evaluation, a more comprehensive review, a review article, reaction to a review or a review article, a peer review and the evaluation of a dictionary as a part of a bigger metalexicographical contribution. This article gives a brief discussion of the scope of dictionary criticism and looks at some criteria for dictionary reviews before focusing on aspects of dictionary reviews in the Scandinavian journal of lexicography LexicoNordica and the South African lexicography journal Lexikos. A comparison is made between the reviews in these two journals, identifying striking similarities and differences. It is also shown that the reviews in Lexikos frequently refer to topics that are not as relevant to LexicoNordica. This is due to the fact that dictionaries reflect something of the linguistic and cultural environment where they are published. Proposals are made to enhance the quality of reviews in Lexikos and to help ensure a stronger theoretical approach to reviews as a genre that elevates the metalexicographic discourse and improves the dictionary culture of a given community.
