Abstract

Abstract Background Energy poverty, which is the deprivation of a series of energy services that satisfy human needs, affects over 2 billion individuals who rely on the combustion of biomass and other solid fuels to fulfill their energy needs. While certain communities address their energy shortfall by harnessing local natural resources, these alternatives fail to provide access to more advantageous and sustainable conditions, thus leading to what are commonly referred to as socioecological traps. Results This research studies the relationships between the energy alternatives that two communities have developed, the bioenergy capability that would allow the system to access more desirable and sustainable states, and the costs and benefits that are perceived from this new use of their residues and resources. A quantitative methodology was employed by designing and applying a structured questionnaire applied to 207 households in two energy-poor communities in the municipality of Irapuato, Guanajuato, Mexico: San Agustín de los Tordos and El Comedero Grande. We have inferred that the alternatives generated by the communities function as socioecological traps. On the one hand, these options generate adverse effects on the health of people and the environment, while discouraging the construction of bioenergy capabilities; on the other hand, they allow them to cover some training costs, at least in the short term. These discoveries suggest that the system is currently in an advantageous phase of the cultivation of new capabilities. Conclusions The outcomes of this study contribute significantly to enhancing our comprehension of socioecological traps and capabilities within the realm of energy, thereby offering valuable insights for the effective management of successful bioenergy implementation initiatives. Moreover, these findings enable the development of frameworks for theoretical interpretation and methodological application within specific contexts, exemplified in our case by rural communities in Irapuato, Guanajuato Mexico. The holistic approach reveals that while individuals may have alternatives to fulfill their energy requirements, many of these alternatives can inadvertently become socioecological traps. For instance, the use of firewood as a short-term solution for household energy needs can generate adverse health and environmental consequences in the long run. In the light of these considerations, a study of their nature becomes imperative and relevant as it delves deeply into the intricate relationship between compensatory alternatives and capacities. Simultaneously, it scrutinizes the community’s perception of bioenergy in terms of costs and benefits, with the overarching goal of transitioning toward a sustainable energy system.

Abstract

Abstract Background A puzzle in evolution is the understanding of how the environment might drive subtle phenotypic variation, and whether this variation is adaptive. Under the neutral evolutionary theory, subtle phenotypes are almost neutral with little adaptive value. To test this idea, we studied the infraspecific variation in flower shape and color in Mammillaria haageana, a species with a wide geographical distribution and phenotypic variation, which populations are often recognized as infraspecific taxa. Results We collected samples from wild populations, kept them in the greenhouse for at least one reproductive year, and collected newly formed flowers. Our first objective was to characterize tepal natural variation in M. haageana through geometric morphometric and multivariate pigmentation analyses. We used landmark-based morphometrics to quantify the trends of shape variation and tepal color-patterns in 20 M. haageana accessions, belonging to five subspecies, plus 8 M. albilanata accessions for comparison as the sister species. We obtained eight geometric morphometric traits for tepal shape and color-patterns. We found broad variation in these traits between accessions belonging to the same subspecies, without taxonomic congruence with those infraspecific units. Also the phenetic cluster analysis showed different grouping patterns among accessions. When we correlated these phenotypes to the environment, we also found that solar radiation might explain the variation in tepal shape and color, suggesting that subtle variation in flower phenotypes might be adaptive. Finally we present anatomical sections in M. haageana subsp. san-angelensis to propose some of the underlying tepal structural features that may give rise to tepal variation. Conclusions Our geometric morphometric approach of flower shape and color allowed us to identify the main trends of variation in each accession and putative subspecies, but also allowed us to correlate these variation to the environment, and propose anatomical mechanisms underlying this diversity of flower phenotypes.

Abstract

Introducción. Conocer los factores que condicionan la tasa de adopción de sistemas de riego tecnificados, es importante por el ahorro de agua que podría obtenerse al aumentar el número de unidades que utilizan sistemas más eficientes. Objetivo. Determinar los factores que condicionan la tasa de adopción de sistemas de riego tecnificados en México. Materiales y métodos. Se estimó un modelo logit en donde la variable dependiente fue el logit de la razón de probabilidades de usar sistemas de riego tecnificados contra otros sistemas de riego. Las variables independientes fueron: precio de la energía eléctrica, valor del agua, precipitación pluvial, temperatura, número de acuíferos sobreexplotados, tamaño de predio, tasa de utilización de unidades de producción que utilizan medidas sanitarias y grado de escolaridad de los productores agrícolas. La estimación se realizó con datos de las 32 entidades federativas de México para el 2019. Resultados. Los resultados indicaron que si el precio de la energía eléctrica y el valor del agua aumentan en 10 %, la tasa o probabilidad de usar sistemas de riego tecnificados aumentaría de 24,51 a 25,42 y 26,17 %, respectivamente. Una disminución del 10 % en la precipitación pluvial aumentaría la probabilidad de usar sistemas de riego tecnificados de 24,51 a 25,41 %, mientras que con un aumento de 5 % en la temperatura, esa probabilidad pasaría de 24,51 a 29,40 %. Conclusión. Estos resultados demostraron la importancia que tienen las condiciones económicas y climáticas como factores que afectan el uso de sistemas de riego tecnificados y, por lo tanto, en el ahorro de agua.

Abstract

The “Lagunas de Montebello” National Park located in Chiapas, Mexico, is well known for its crystal blue water bodies, some of which, in 2003, started to change color from crystalline to cloudy brown, and occasionally emit a foul smell, contains white-yellowish supernatant debris and dead fish. To determine the causes of the changes in the water characteristics of the “Liquidambar” lagoon of the Montebello lagoon system, a physicochemical characterization was carried out over the first six meters of the water column, together with geochemical speciation analysis and the saturation index calculation for different minerals. Water was classified as calcium-sulfated and the main mechanism that controlled its chemistry was rocks dissolution. Sulfide was found at all sampled depths in the range of 0.11 to 1.13 mg.L-1. The concentration of sulfate in the water column ranged from 249.21 to 298.7 mg.L-1, carbonate ranged from 140.5 to 261.4 mg.L-1, calcium and magnesium ranged from 94.5 to 146.9 mg.L-1 and 34.2 to 38.3 mg.L-1, respectively. Likewise, oxygen was also found to be oversaturated on the surface with a value of 9.32 mg.L-1. The speciation results and SI indicated that the mineral phases calcite, aragonite, and dolomite were oversaturated, being greater on the surface. The results suggested the possibility that the turbidity, the coloration change, and the whitish supernatant were due to the precipitation of carbonate minerals, microbiologically influenced by the photosynthetic activity in the upper layer of the lagoon water.

25. Otra especie nueva del género Dahlia (Asteraceae, Coreopsideae): ¿estamos cerca de conocer su diversidad total?

Abstract

Background and Aims: The genus Dahlia is culturally and economically appreciated. The botanical explorations in richness areas for Dahlia still provide taxonomic novelties. The aims of this communication are to describe the new species D. gypsicola, and compare it morphologically and ecologically with D. calzadana, providing a distribution map, illustrations, an identification key for Dahlia of the Cañada-Mixteca biocultural region in Oaxaca, Mexico, and a species accumulation analysis. Methods: Our study was based on field exploration, herbarium material revision, and analysis of living collections. The conservation status was determined based on range size, and criteria and categories of the IUCN Red List. To measure the sampling effort, a predictive species richness analysis was calculated considering 41 taxa of Dahlia and 2297 herbarium records collected between 1791-2021. Key results: Dahlia gypsicola is a member of Dahlia section Dahlia, morphologically related to D. calzadana. It differs by the herbaceous habit, semi-succulent leaves and stems, smaller petioles and capitulum, more capitula per synflorescence, and fewer disk florets per capitulum. Moreover, both species are allopatric and do not share ecological preferences and phenology. The category of Critically Endangered (CR B1a) is proposed for D. gypsicola, and Endangered (EN B1a) for D. calzadana. The species prediction richness shows that the number of known Dahlia species is almost complete: the inventory is approaching 95% and the predicted number of species is close to 43. Conclusions: A complete knowledge of the diversity in Dahlia could enhance plant breeding programs with economic and cultural impacts, because the possibilities of generating new cultivars are many. It is recommended to continue the explorations and increase botanical collections; undescribed species may exist where gypsophyte centers of endemism overlap with richness areas of Dahlia., Antecedentes y Objetivos: El género Dahlia es cultural y económicamente apreciado. Las exploraciones botánicas en áreas de riqueza para Dahlia siguen aportando novedades taxonómicas. Los objetivos de esta comunicación son describir a la nueva especie D. gypsicola, y compararla morfológica y ecológicamente con D. calzadana, proveer un mapa de distribución, ilustraciones, una clave de identificación para Dahlia de la región biocultural Cañada-Mixteca en Oaxaca, México, y análisis de acumulación de especies. Métodos: Nuestro estudio se basó en exploraciones de campo, revisión de especímenes de herbario y análisis de colecciones vivas. Se determinó el estado de conservación considerando el área de distribución y criterios y categorías de la Lista Roja de la UICN. Para medir el esfuerzo de muestreo se realizó un análisis predictivo de riqueza considerando 41 especies de Dahlia y 2297 registros de herbario recolectados entre 1791-2021. Resultados clave: Dahlia gypsicola es miembro de Dahlia sección Dahlia; relacionada morfológicamente con D. calzadana. Se diferencia por el hábito herbáceo, hojas y tallos semisuculentos, peciolos y capítulos más pequeños, más capítulos por sinflorescencia y menos flores del disco por capítulo. Además, ambas especies son alopátricas y no comparten preferencias ecológicas ni fenología. Se propone la categoría En Peligro Crítico (CR B1a) para D. gypsicola y En Peligro (EN B1a) para D. calzadana. Los predictores de riqueza muestran que el número de especies conocidas de Dahlia está casi completo: el inventario se acerca al 95% y el número previsto de especies es cercano a 43. Conclusiones: Un conocimiento completo de la diversidad de Dahlia podría potenciar programas de fitomejoramiento con impactos económicos y culturales, porque las posibilidades de generar nuevos cultivares son amplias. Abstract

Este artículo se propone pensar la potencia –pretérita y actual– del peronismo, como movimiento político-cultural, a partir de un análisis de las esculturas tituladas Los derechos del trabajador y La razón de mi vida, pensadas originalmente como parte del llamado Monumento al Descamisado, diseñado por el gobierno en 1951, y que actualmente forman parte del patrimonio del Museo Histórico 17 de octubre, ubicado en la localidad de San Vicente, provincia de Buenos Aires. Abordándolas desde el punto de vista del enfoque biográfico de la cultura material, se realiza un recorrido de los distintos momentos que atravesaron las esculturas hasta el lugar (físico, histórico y simbólico) que ocupan hoy, entendiendo así que no solo han logrado trascender enormemente a sus creadores, sino que además se han visto resignificadas y transformadas en diversas instancias, producto de cambiantes relaciones sociales y de poder.

35. Growth Patterns in Seedling Roots of the Pincushion Cactus Mammillaria Reveal Trends of Intra- and Inter-Specific Variation

Abstract

Genetic mechanisms controlling root development are well-understood in plant model species, and emerging frontier research is currently dissecting how some of these mechanisms control root development in cacti. Here we show the patterns of root architecture development in a gradient of divergent lineages, from populations to species in Mammillaria. First, we show the patterns of variation in natural variants of the species Mammillaria haageana. Then we compare this variation to closely related species within the Series Supertexta in Mammillaria (diverging for the last 2.1 million years) in which M. haageana is inserted. Finally, we compared these patterns of variation to what is found in a set of Mammillaria species belonging to different Series (diverging for the last 8 million years). When plants were grown in controlled environments, we found that the variation in root architecture observed at the intra-specific level, partially recapitulates the variation observed at the inter-specific level. These phenotypic outcomes at different evolutionary time-scales can be interpreted as macroevolution being the cumulative outcome of microevolutionary phenotypic divergence, such as the one observed in Mammillaria accessions and species.

Abstract

Objective: to analyze treatment outcomes in patients with stage IIA–IIIB cervical cancer.Materials and methods. The study included 278 women with stage IIA–IIIB cervical cancer. Study participants were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 comprised 165 patients who received chemoradiotherapy + surgery (radical hysterectomy). Patients in group 2 received standard radiotherapy.Results. Patients receiving combination therapy demonstrated better overall and relapse-free survival compared to those receiving standard treatment.Conclusion. Both publications of other authors and our own results suggest high efficacy and safety of combination therapy for stage IIA–IIIB cervical cancer.
