A pesar de los avances alcanzados en los últimos 30 años en las investigaciones en el cultivo del ñame en Cuba, la tecnología de producción en gran escala de este cultivo es susceptible de ser mejorada. El presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo incrementar la producción sostenible de ñame (Dioscorea spp.) mediante el mejoramiento de la tecnología del cultivo en condiciones de campo para el clon Criollo (Dioscorea alata L.) en la Provincia Granma. La investigación fundamental se basó en la mejora de la tecnología de producción con el uso de surcos en camellón a diferentes distancias de plantación (1x1 m y 1x0.5 m) con relación a la tradicional de montículo mediante la plantación (1x1 m) de bulbillos mayores de 80 g de clon Criollo (D. alata L.) provenientes de plantas in vitro cultivadas durante un primer ciclo de cultivo en campo. Se demostró que la tecnología de producción con el uso de cantero a una distancia de plantación de 1x0.5 m es significativamente superior desde el punto de vista sostenible a la tecnología tradicionalmente utilizada de montículo (1x1 m) con rendimientos agrícolas de 63 t/ha.

El plátano cultivar Enano Guantanamero (Musa spp., AAB), es uno de los más cultivados en Cuba, sin embargo, los nuevos biorreguladores del crecimiento, como el Pectimorf®, no se ha utilizado en la propagación in vitro de este cultivar. Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo mejorar el proceso de propagación masiva de plantas in vitro de plátano cultivar Enano Guantanamero (Musa spp., AAB) mediante el uso del Pectimorf® solo (5 y 10 mg. L-1) y combinado con reguladores del crecimiento (AIA y BAP) en la fase de multiplicación y enraizamiento in vitro. Se aplicó un diseño completamente aleatorizado con tres replicas por cada tratamiento. A los 21 días se evaluó en las plantas in vitro en las fases de multiplicación (número de brotes; altura del pseudotallo; número de hojas y número de raíces) y enraizamiento (altura del pseudotallo; número de hojas por planta, número de raíces, longitud de la raíz; masa seca foliar y masa seca de las raíces). La experiencia de innovación biotecnológica en la micropropagación del plátano cultivar Enano Guantanamero (Musa spp., AAB) con el uso del Pectimorf® mejoró de manera significativa el proceso de propagación masiva de plantas in vitro donde se demostró que la combinación BAP 4 mg. L-1 + Pectimorf'® 10 mg.L-1 sustituye el AIA 0,65 mg.L-1 en la fase de multiplicación, y el AIA 1.3 mg.L-1 + Pectimorf'® 10 mg.L-1 tuvo un efecto sinérgico en la fase de enraizamiento de las plantas in vitro.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Saccharomyces cerevisiae activated autolyzed yeast, and β-glucans in the diet of male Cryphiops caementarius on total and differential counts of hemocytes. 24 male shrimp captured in the Pativilca River of 7.05 ± 1.09 g and 5.9 ± 0.43 cm were used. Se expone el caso de un enfermo diagnosticado de cáncer epidermoide de cabeza cuello, que ingresa en la unidad de cuidados paliativos del Hospital Virgen de la Poveda para control sintomático y por claudicación familiar ante los cuidados. El enfermo presenta al ingreso un síndrome confusional agudo (SCA), que cursa con ideas e intentos de fuga; además de otros síntomas cambiantes. En la cuidadora principal se aprecia un proceso de duelo anticipado “desadaptativo”, y múltiples sesgos cognitivos y concepciones erróneas sobre el proceso de la enfermedad. Los objetivos del equipo interdisciplinar se dirigieron al control sintomático, mejora de la comunicación, resolución de duelo anticipado desadaptativo y despedida. El paciente permaneció ingresado treinta y dos días en nuestro centro, en este tiempo el objetivo de control sintomático se alcanzó en su totalidad, hasta el éxitus. La cuidadora principal consiguió vincularse afectivamente con su esposo. Pudieron despedirse.

El continuo crecimiento cuantitativo del turismo está siendo acompañado en las últimas décadas de profundos cambios cualitativos, que obligan a pensar periódicamente la oferta con el fin de adaptarla a los nuevos gustos y demandas de los consumidores. Es evidente que estos cambios implican la reformulación de las estrategias y los procesos tradicionales de desarrollo, pasándose de manera general de planteamientos para la creación de productos a un marco de intervención más complejo en el que sea obligado atender a la totalidad del destino turístico. El presente trabajo analiza cómo se están produciendo estos cambios, y cómo deberían evolucionar las metodologías y los procesos de planificación con el fin de atender al desarrollo de destinos complejos, sostenibles y con capacidad para abrirse un hueco competitivo frente a productos sólidamente posicionados.

For over 60 years, salicylic acid (SA) has been known as a plant immune signal required for basal and systemic acquired resistance. SA activates these immune responses by reprogramming ∼20% of the transcriptome through NPR1. However, components in the NPR1 signaling hub, which appears as nuclear condensates, and the NPR1 signaling cascade have remained elusive due to difficulties in studying this transcriptional cofactor, whose chromatin association is indirect and likely transient. To overcome this challenge, we applied TurboID to divulge the NPR1 proxiome, which detected almost all known NPR1 interactors as well as new components of transcription-related complexes. Testing of new components showed that chromatin remodeling and histone demethylation contribute to SA-induced resistance. Globally, the NPR1 proxiome has a striking similarity to the proxiome of GBPL3 that is involved in SA synthesis, except for associated transcription factors (TFs), suggesting that common regulatory modules are recruited to reprogram specific transcriptomes by transcriptional cofactors, like NPR1, through binding to unique TFs. Stepwise green fluorescent protein-tagged factor cleavage under target and release using nuclease (greenCUT&RUN) analyses showed that, upon SA induction, NPR1 initiates the transcriptional cascade primarily through association with TGACG-binding TFs to induce expression of secondary TFs, predominantly WRKYs. Further, WRKY54 and WRKY70 were identified to play a major role in inducing immune-output genes without interacting with NPR1 at the chromatin. Moreover, loss of condensate formation function of NPR1 decreases its chromatin association and transcriptional activity, indicating the importance of condensates in organizing the NPR1 signaling hub and initiating the transcriptional cascade. O-GlcNAcylation is a critical post-translational modification of proteins observed in both plants and animals and plays a key role in growth and development. While considerable knowledge exists about over 3000 substrates in animals, our understanding of this modification in plants remains limited. Unlike animals, plants possess two putative homologs: SECRET AGENT (SEC) and SPINDLY, with SPINDLY also exhibiting O-fucosylation activity. To investigate the role of SEC as a major O-GlcNAc transferase in plants, we utilized lectin-weak affinity chromatography enrichment and stable isotope labeling in Arabidopsis labeling, quantifying at both MS1 and MS2 levels. Our findings reveal a significant reduction in O-GlcNAc levels in the sec mutant, indicating the critical role of SEC in mediating O-GlcNAcylation. Through a comprehensive approach, combining higher-energy collision dissociation and electron-transfer high-energy collision dissociation fragmentation with substantial fractionations, we expanded our GlcNAc profiling, identifying 436 O-GlcNAc targets, including 227 new targets. The targets span diverse cellular processes, suggesting broad regulatory functions of O-GlcNAcylation. The expanded targets also enabled exploration of crosstalk between O-GlcNAcylation and O-fucosylation. We also examined electron-transfer high-energy collision dissociation fragmentation for site assignment. Mercury concentrations and yields in the Yukon River are the highest of the world's six largest panarctic drainages. Permafrost thaw has been implicated as the main driver of these high values. Alternative sources include mercury released from glacial melt and erosion, atmospheric mercury pollution, or surface mining. To determine the summer source and speciation of mercury across the Yukon River basin within Canada, we sampled water from 12 tributaries and the mainstem during July 2021. The total (unfiltered) mercury concentration in the glacier-fed White River was 57 ng/L, >10 times higher than all other sampled tributaries. The White River's high total mercury concentrations were driven by suspended sediment and persisted ∼300 km downstream of glacierized headwaters. Total mercury concentrations were lowest (typically <2 ng/L) in tributaries downstream of still-water landscape features (e.g., lakes and settling ponds), suggesting these features are effective sinks for sediment-bound mercury. Low total mercury concentrations (∼2 ng/L) were also observed in five tributaries across diverse thawing permafrost landscapes. These results suggest that glacial erosion and meltwater transport, not permafrost, drive enhanced exports of mercury with suspended sediment. Mercury exports may decline as glacial watersheds pass peak water. The recent discovery of SPINDLY (SPY)-catalyzed protein O-fucosylation revealed a novel mechanism for regulating nucleocytoplasmic protein functions in plants. Genetic evidence indicates the important roles of SPY in diverse developmental and physiological processes. However, the upstream signal controlling SPY activity and the downstream substrate proteins O-fucosylated by SPY remain largely unknown. Here, we demonstrated that SPY mediates sugar-dependent growth in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). We further identified hundreds of O-fucosylated proteins using lectin affinity chromatography followed by mass spectrometry. All the O-fucosylation events quantified in our proteomic analyses were undetectable or dramatically decreased in the spy mutants, and thus likely catalyzed by SPY. The O-fucosylome includes mostly nuclear and cytosolic proteins. Many O-fucosylated proteins function in essential cellular processes, phytohormone signaling, and developmental programs, consistent with the genetic functions of SPY. The O-fucosylome also includes many proteins modified by O-linked N-acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc) and by phosphorylation downstream of the target of rapamycin (TOR) kinase, revealing the convergence of these nutrient signaling pathways on key regulatory functions such as post-transcriptional/translational regulation and phytohormone responses. Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein enzyme responsible for maintaining the telomeric end of the chromosome. The telomerase enzyme requires two main components to function: the telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) and the telomerase RNA (TR), which provides the template for telomeric DNA synthesis. TR is a long non-coding RNA, which forms the basis of a large structural scaffold upon which many accessory proteins can bind and form the complete telomerase holoenzyme. These accessory protein interactions are required for telomerase activity and regulation inside cells. The interacting partners of TERT have been well studied in yeast, human, and Tetrahymena models, but not in parasitic protozoa, including clinically relevant human parasites. Here, using the protozoan parasite, Trypanosoma brucei ( T. brucei ) as a model, we have identified the interactome of T. brucei TERT ( Tb TERT) using a mass spectrometry-based approach. We identified previously known and unknown interacting factors of Tb TERT, highlighting unique features of T. brucei telomerase biology. Accurate relative quantification is critical in proteomic studies. The incorporation of stable isotope 15 N to plant-expressed proteins in vivo is a powerful tool for accurate quantification with a major advantage of reducing preparative and analytical variabilities. However, 15 N labeling quantification has several challenges. Less identifications are often observed in the heavy-labeled samples because of incomplete labeling, resulting in missing values in reciprocal labeling experiments. Inaccurate quantification can happen when there is contamination from co-eluting peptides or chemical noise in the MS 1 survey scan. These drawbacks in quantification can be more pronounced in less abundant but biologically interesting proteins, which often have very few identified peptides. SignificanceThe Ice-Free Corridor (IFC) has long played a key role in hypotheses about the peopling of the Americas. Earlier assessments of its age suggested that the IFC was available for a Clovis-first migration, but subsequent developments now suggest a pre-Clovis occupation of the Americas that occurred before the opening of the IFC, thus supporting a Pacific coastal migration route instead. However, large uncertainties in existing ages from the IFC cannot preclude its availability as a route for the first migrations. Resolving this debate over migration route is important for addressing the questions of when and how the first Americans arrived. We report cosmogenic nuclide exposure ages that show that the final opening of the IFC occurred well after pre-Clovis occupation.

Metabolic labeling using stable isotopes is widely used for the relative quantification of proteins in proteomic studies. In plants, metabolic labeling using 15 N has great potential, but the associated complexity of data analysis has limited its usage. Here, we present the 15 N stable-isotope labeled protein quantification workflow utilizing open-access web-based software Protein Prospector. Further, we discuss several important features of 15 N labeling required to make reliable and precise protein quantification. Permafrost carbon represents a potentially powerful amplifier of climate change, but little is known about permafrost sensitivity and associated carbon cycling during past warm intervals. We reconstruct permafrost history in western Canada during Pleistocene interglacials from 130 uranium-thorium ages on 72 speleothems, cave deposits that only accumulate with deep ground thaw. We infer that permafrost thaw extended to the high Arctic during one or more periods between ~1.5 million and 0.5 million years ago but has been limited to the sub-Arctic since 400,000 years ago. Our Canadian speleothem growth history closely parallels an analogous reconstruction from Siberia, suggesting that this shift toward more stable permafrost across the Pleistocene may have been Arctic-wide. In contrast, interglacial greenhouse gas concentrations were relatively stable throughout the Pleistocene, suggesting that either permafrost thaw did not trigger substantial carbon release to the atmosphere or it was offset by carbon uptake elsewhere on glacial-interglacial time scales., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors, some rights reserved; exclusive licensee American Association for the Advancement of Science. Chronic wounds are a major health problem that cause millions of dollars in expenses every year. Among all the treatments used, active wound treatments such as enzymatic treatments represent a cheaper and specific option with a fast growth category in the market. In particular, bacterial and plant proteases have been employed due to their homology to human proteases, which drive the normal wound healing process. However, the use of these proteases has demonstrated results with low reproducibility. Therefore, alternative sources of proteases such as snake venom have been proposed. Here, we performed a functional mining of proteases from rattlesnakes ( Crotalus ornatus , C. molossus nigrescens , C. scutulatus, and C. atrox ) due to their high protease predominance and similarity to native proteases. To characterize Crotalus spp. Proteases, we performed different protease assays to measure and confirm the presence of metalloproteases and serine proteases, such as the universal protease assay and zymography, using several substrates such as gelatin, casein, hemoglobin, L-TAME, fibrinogen, and fibrin. We found that all our venom extracts degraded casein, gelatin, L-TAME, fibrinogen, and fibrin, but not hemoglobin. Crotalus ornatus and C. m. nigrescens extracts were the most proteolytic venoms among the samples. Particularly, C. ornatus predominantly possessed low molecular weight proteases (P-I metalloproteases). Our results demonstrated the presence of metalloproteases capable of degrading gelatin (a collagen derivative) and fibrin clots, whereas serine proteases were capable of degrading fibrinogen-generating fibrin clots, mimicking thrombin activity. Moreover, we demonstrated that Crotalus spp. are a valuable source of proteases that can aid chronic wound-healing treatments.

Titanium (Ti) is broadly used for clinical purposes in various medical fields related to bone repair because of its favorable mechanical properties and its ability to osseointegrate in host bone tissue. Nowadays, Ti surfaces can be functionalized in order to provide potentially beneficial additional properties. In this review, we summarize different surface modifications of Ti implants, focusing on biological relevance and the biological issues targeted by each specific approach. We first define the historical relevance of Ti as an implantable material, the osseointegration process, and the main complications related to it before describing the biological rationale which motivates Ti surface modification in implantable devices. Then, we explore a variety of physical and chemical modifications feasible on Ti surfaces. Thereafter, we focus on inorganic and organic coatings being developed for implantable Ti devices that are currently under investigation. Finally, we summarize the surface-modification approaches clinically available or undergoing clinical trials.

The arrival of bison in North America marks one of the most successful large-mammal dispersals from Asia within the last million years, yet the timing and nature of this event remain poorly determined. Here, we used a combined paleontological and paleogenomic approach to provide a robust timeline for the entry and subsequent evolution of bison within North America. We characterized two fossil-rich localities in Canada's Yukon and identified the oldest well-constrained bison fossil in North America, a 130,000-y-old steppe bison, Bison cf. priscus We extracted and sequenced mitochondrial genomes from both this bison and from the remains of a recently discovered, ∼120,000-y-old giant long-horned bison, Bison latifrons , from Snowmass, Colorado. We analyzed these and 44 other bison mitogenomes with ages that span the Late Pleistocene, and identified two waves of bison dispersal into North America from Asia, the earliest of which occurred ∼195-135 thousand y ago and preceded the morphological diversification of North American bison, and the second of which occurred during the Late Pleistocene, ∼45-21 thousand y ago. This chronological arc establishes that bison first entered North America during the sea level lowstand accompanying marine isotope stage 6, rejecting earlier records of bison in North America. After their invasion, bison rapidly colonized North America during the last interglaciation, spreading from Alaska through continental North America; they have been continuously resident since then.

Recent advances in paleogenomic technologies have enabled an increasingly detailed understanding of the evolutionary relationships of now-extinct mammalian taxa. However, a number of enigmatic Quaternary species have never been characterized with molecular data, often because available fossils are rare or are found in environments that are not optimal for DNA preservation. Here, we analyze paleogenomic data extracted from bones attributed to the late Pleistocene western camel, Camelops cf. hesternus, a species that was distributed across central and western North America until its extinction approximately 13,000 years ago. Despite a modal sequence length of only around 35 base pairs, we reconstructed high-coverage complete mitochondrial genomes and low-coverage partial nuclear genomes for each specimen. We find that Camelops is sister to African and Asian bactrian and dromedary camels, to the exclusion of South American camelids (llamas, guanacos, alpacas, and vicuñas). These results contradict previous morphology-based phylogenetic models for Camelops, which suggest instead a closer relationship between Camelops and the South American camelids. The molecular data imply a Late Miocene divergence of the Camelops clade from lineages that separately gave rise to the extant camels of Eurasia. Existing radiocarbon ((14)C) dates on American mastodon (Mammut americanum) fossils from eastern Beringia (Alaska and Yukon) have been interpreted as evidence they inhabited the Arctic and Subarctic during Pleistocene full-glacial times (∼ 18,000 (14)C years B.P.). However, this chronology is inconsistent with inferred habitat preferences of mastodons and correlative paleoecological evidence. To establish a last appearance date (LAD) for M. americanum regionally, we obtained 53 new (14)C dates on 36 fossils, including specimens with previously published dates. Using collagen ultrafiltration and single amino acid (hydroxyproline) methods, these specimens consistently date to beyond or near the ∼ 50,000 y B.P. limit of (14)C dating. Some erroneously "young" (14)C dates are due to contamination by exogenous carbon from natural sources and conservation treatments used in museums. We suggest mastodons inhabited the high latitudes only during warm intervals, particularly the Last Interglacial [Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5] when boreal forests existed regionally. Our (14)C dataset suggests that mastodons were extirpated from eastern Beringia during the MIS 4 glacial interval (∼ 75,000 y ago), following the ecological shift from boreal forest to steppe tundra. Mastodons thereafter became restricted to areas south of the continental ice sheets, where they suffered complete extinction ∼ 10,000 (14)C years B.P. Mastodons were already absent from eastern Beringia several tens of millennia before the first humans crossed the Bering Isthmus or the onset of climate changes during the terminal Pleistocene. Local extirpations of mastodons and other megafaunal populations in eastern Beringia were asynchrononous and independent of their final extinction south of the continental ice sheets.

Varying levels of boreal summer insolation and associated Earth system feedbacks led to differing climate and ice-sheet states during late-Quaternary interglaciations. In particular, Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 11 was an exceptionally long interglaciation and potentially had a global mean sea level 6 to 13 metres above the present level around 410,000 to 400,000 years ago, implying substantial mass loss from the Greenland ice sheet (GIS). There are, however, no model simulations and only limited proxy data to constrain the magnitude of the GIS response to climate change during this 'super interglacial', thus confounding efforts to assess climate/ice-sheet threshold behaviour and associated sea-level rise. Here we show that the south GIS was drastically smaller during MIS 11 than it is now, with only a small residual ice dome over southernmost Greenland. We use the strontium-neodymium-lead isotopic composition of proglacial sediment discharged from south Greenland to constrain the provenance of terrigenous silt deposited on the Eirik Drift, a sedimentary deposit off the south Greenland margin. We identify a major reduction in sediment input derived from south Greenland's Precambrian bedrock terranes, probably reflecting the cessation of subglacial erosion and sediment transport as a result of near-complete deglaciation of south Greenland. Comparison with ice-sheet configurations from numerical models suggests that the GIS lost about 4.5 to 6 metres of sea-level-equivalent volume during MIS 11. This is evidence for late-Quaternary GIS collapse after it crossed a climate/ice-sheet stability threshold that may have been no more than several degrees above pre-industrial temperatures.

We report exceptional preservation of fossil wood buried deeply in a kimberlite pipe that intruded northwestern Canada's Slave Province 53.3±0.6 million years ago (Ma), revealed during excavation of diamond source rock. The wood originated from forest surrounding the eruption zone and collapsed into the diatreme before resettling in volcaniclastic kimberlite to depths >300 m, where it was mummified in a sterile environment. Anatomy of the unpermineralized wood permits conclusive identification to the genus Metasequoia (Cupressaceae). The wood yields genuine cellulose and occluded amber, both of which have been characterized spectroscopically and isotopically. From cellulose δ(18)O and δ(2)H measurements, we infer that Early Eocene paleoclimates in the western Canadian subarctic were 12-17°C warmer and four times wetter than present. Canadian kimberlites offer Lagerstätte-quality preservation of wood from a region with limited alternate sources of paleobotanical information.

To ascertain the response of the southern Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) to a boreal summer climate warmer than at present, we explored whether southern Greenland was deglaciated during the Last Interglacial (LIG), using the Sr-Nd-Pb isotope ratios of silt-sized sediment discharged from southern Greenland. Our isotope data indicate that no single southern Greenland geologic terrane was completely deglaciated during the LIG, similar to the Holocene. Differences in sediment sources during the LIG relative to the early Holocene denote, however, greater southern GIS retreat during the LIG. These results allow the evaluation of a suite of GIS models and are consistent with a GIS contribution of 1.6 to 2.2 meters to the ≥4-meter LIG sea-level highstand, requiring a significant sea-level contribution from the Antarctic Ice Sheet.

Peatlands are a key component of the global carbon cycle. Chronologies of peatland initiation are typically based on compiled basal peat radiocarbon (14C) dates and frequency histograms of binned calibrated age ranges. However, such compilations are problematic because poor quality 14C dates are commonly included and because frequency histograms of binned age ranges introduce chronological artefacts that bias the record of peatland initiation. Using a published compilation of 274 basal 14C dates from Alaska as a case study, we show that nearly half the 14C dates are inappropriate for reconstructing peatland initiation, and that the temporal structure of peatland initiation is sensitive to sampling biases and treatment of calibrated 14C dates. We present revised chronologies of peatland initiation for Alaska and the circumpolar Arctic based on summed probability distributions of calibrated 14C dates. These revised chronologies reveal that northern peatland initiation lagged abrupt increases in atmospheric CH4 concentration at the start of the Bølling-Allerød interstadial (Termination 1A) and the end of the Younger Dryas chronozone (Termination 1B), suggesting that northern peatlands were not the primary drivers of the rapid increases in atmospheric CH4. Our results demonstrate that subtle methodological changes in the synthesis of basal 14C ages lead to substantially different interpretations of temporal trends in peatland initiation, with direct implications for the role of peatlands in the global carbon cycle.

Causes of late Quaternary extinctions of large mammals ("megafauna") continue to be debated, especially for continental losses, because spatial and temporal patterns of extinction are poorly known. Accurate latest appearance dates (LADs) for such taxa are critical for interpreting the process of extinction. The extinction of woolly mammoth and horse in northwestern North America is currently placed at 15,000-13,000 calendar years before present (yr BP), based on LADs from dating surveys of macrofossils (bones and teeth). Advantages of using macrofossils to estimate when a species became extinct are offset, however, by the improbability of finding and dating the remains of the last-surviving members of populations that were restricted in numbers or confined to refugia. Here we report an alternative approach to detect 'ghost ranges' of dwindling populations, based on recovery of ancient DNA from perennially frozen and securely dated sediments (sedaDNA). In such contexts, sedaDNA can reveal the molecular presence of species that appear absent in the macrofossil record. We show that woolly mammoth and horse persisted in interior Alaska until at least 10,500 yr BP, several thousands of years later than indicated from macrofossil surveys. These results contradict claims that Holocene survival of mammoths in Beringia was restricted to ecologically isolated high-latitude islands. More importantly, our finding that mammoth and horse overlapped with humans for several millennia in the region where people initially entered the Americas challenges theories that megafaunal extinction occurred within centuries of human arrival or were due to an extraterrestrial impact in the late Pleistocene.

Climate models predict extensive and severe degradation of permafrost in response to global warming, with a potential for release of large volumes of stored carbon. However, the accuracy of these models is difficult to evaluate because little is known of the history of permafrost and its response to past warm intervals of climate. We report the presence of relict ground ice in subarctic Canada that is greater than 700,000 years old, with the implication that ground ice in this area has survived past interglaciations that were warmer and of longer duration than the present interglaciation.

Dealing with cardiac emergencies resulting from the development of life-threatening dysrhythmias always presents some degree of stress to the practitioner, regardless of the amount of experience and exposure to cardiac arrests. Dealing effectively with these emergencies is threefold. First is prevention of the event. The astute practitioner utilizes knowledge of precipitating factors, data collection, assessment, and intervention to prevent a patient's condition from advancing to an emergency situation. Second, one must be prepared to deal with the emergency, by having a plan of action and knowing what to expect. Finally, one must deal with the emergency as effectively as possible, and then evaluate what has occurred, how the emergency was handled, and what actions would have improved the experience.
