2. Using various machine learning algorithms for quantitative analysis in Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy

Abstract

Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy technique is employed for quantitative analysis of aluminum samples by different classical machine learning approaches. A Q-switch Nd:YAG laser at fundamental harmonic of 1064 nm is utilized for creation of LIBS plasma for prediction of constituent concentrations of the aluminum standard alloys. In current research, concentration prediction is performed by linear approaches of support vector regression, multiple linear regression, principal component analysis integrated with MLR and SVR, and as well as nonlinear algorithms of artificial neural network, kernelized support vector regression , and the integration of traditional principal component analysis with KSVR, and ANN. Furthermore, dimension reduction is applied on various methodologies by PCA algorithm for improving the quantitative analysis. The results presented that the combination of PCA with KSVR algorithm model had the best efficiency in predictions of the most of elements among other classical machine learning algorithms.

Abstract

Recurrent Neural Networks are classes of Artificial Neural Networks that establish connections between different nodes form a directed or undirected graph for temporal dynamical analysis. In this research, the laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique is used for quantitative analysis of aluminum alloys by different Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) architecture. The fundamental harmonic (1064 nm) of a nanosecond Nd:YAG laser pulse is employed to generate the LIBS plasma for the prediction of constituent concentrations of the aluminum standard samples. Here, Recurrent Neural Networks based on different networks, such as Long Short Term Memory (LSTM), Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), Simple Recurrent Neural Network (Simple RNN), and as well as Recurrent Convolutional Networks comprising of Conv-SimpleRNN, Conv-LSTM and Conv-GRU are utilized for concentration prediction. Then a comparison is performed among prediction by classical machine learning methods of support vector regressor (SVR), the Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP), Decision Tree algorithm, Gradient Boosting Regression (GBR), Random Forest Regression (RFR), Linear Regression, and k-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) algorithm. Results showed that the machine learning tools based on Convolutional Recurrent Networks had the best efficiencies in prediction of the most of the elements among other multivariate methods.

8. Thermoelectric properties of armchair phosphorene nanoribbons in the presence of vacancy-induced impurity band

Abstract

Armchair phosphorene nanoribbons (APNRs) are known to be semiconductors with an indirect bandgap. Here, we propose to introduce new states in the gap of APNRs by creating a periodic structure of vacancies (antidots). Based on the tight-binding model, we show that a periodic array of vacancies or nanopores leads to the formation of an impurity band inside the gap region. We first present an analytical expression for the dispersion relation of an impurity band induced by hybridization of bound states associated with each single vacancy defect. Then, we increase the size of vacancy defects to include a bunch of atoms and theoretically investigate the effect of nanopores size and their spacing on electronic band structure, carrier transmission function, and thermoelectric properties. Our analysis of the power generation rate and thermoelectric efficiency of these structures reveals that an ANPR can be used as a superb thermoelectric power generation module.

Abstract

Double-level quantum systems are good candidates for revealing coherent quantum transport properties. Here, we consider quantum interference effects due to the formation of a two-level system (TLS) coupled to the edge channel of a zigzag Phosphorene nanoribbon (ZPNR). Using the tight-binding approach, we first demonstrate the formation of a TLS in bulk Phosphorene sheet due to the existence of two nearby vacancy impurities. Then, we show that such a TLS can couple to the quasi-one-dimensional continuum of the edge states in a ZPNR which results in the the appearance of two-dip Fano-type line shapes. To this end, we generalize the Lippmann-Schwinger approach to study the scattering of edge electrons in a ZPNR by two coupled impurity defects. We obtain an analytical expression of the transmission coefficient which shows that the positions and widths of the anti-resonances can be controlled by changing the intervacancy distance as well as their distance from the edge of the ribbon. This work constitutes a clear example of the multiple Fano resonances in mesoscopic transport.

28. A tight-binding investigation of biaxial strain induced topological phase transition in GeCH$_3$

Abstract

We propose a tight-binding (TB) model, that includes spin-orbit coupling (SOC), to describe the electronic properties of methyl-substituted germanane (GeCH$_3$). This model gives an electronic spectrum in agreement with first principle results close to the Fermi level. Using the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ formalism, we show that a topological phase transition from a normal insulator (NI) to a quantum spin Hall (QSH) phase occurs at 11.6\% biaxial tensile strain. The sensitivity of the electronic properties of this system on strain, in particular its transition to the topological insulating phase, makes it very attractive for applications in strain sensors and other microelectronic applications., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

In this paper the optical gain mechanism in phototransistor detectors (PTDs) is explored in low light conditions. An analytical formula is derived for the physical limit on the minimum number of detectable photons for the PTD. This formulation shows that the sensitivity of the PTD, regardless of its material composition, is related to the square root of the normalized total capacitance at the base layer. Since the base total capacitance is directly proportional to the size of the PTD, the formulation shows the scaling effect on the sensitivity of the PTD. We used the extracted formula to study the sensitivity limit of a typical InGaAs/InP heterojunction PTD. Modeling predicts that a PTD with a nanoscale electronic area can reach to a single photon noise equivalent power even at room temperature. The proposed model can also be used to explore the sensitivity and speed of the nanowire-based photodetectors. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive study on the sensitivity of the PTD for low light detection., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Objective: Stuttering is a type of communication and fluency disorder that hurts mental and emotional health. It is also associated with a significant increase in both trait and social anxiety. Studies on stuttering in adults have indicated the nature and impact of this phenomenon. In addition, some psychological aspects of this phenomenon remain vague and need further investigation. Therefore, the present study aimed to compare emotion regulation difficulties, repetitive negative thinking, and experiential avoidance between people who stutter and healthy individuals. Method: In this study, 101 people who stutter (43 females and 58 males, with a mean age of 29.55 ± 187 years), as well as 110 healthy individuals (74 females and 36 males, with a mean age of 25.57 ± 489 years) as participants were chosen using the convenience sampling method among those who referred to the speech therapy clinics of Tehran, Iran. Research instruments including the repetitive negative thinking inventory, Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale, and Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (AAQ-I) were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using multivariate ANOVA test and Multiple Regression Analysis. Results: The mean age of the participants was 29.55 years in the people who stutter and 25.57 years in the healthy individuals (P < 0.01). The present results indicated that the mean score of experiential avoidance was higher in the people who stutter (M ± SD: 35.74 ± 9.24) compared to the healthy individuals (M ± SD: 8.89 ± 31.11). Additionally, the mean score of emotion regulation difficulties was higher in the people who stutter (M ± SD: 88.75 ± 20.59) compared to the healthy individuals (M ± SD: 64.14 ± 94.94) (P < 0.001). However, there was no significant difference in the mean score of repetitive negative thinking between the people who stutter (M ± SD: 98.45 ± 25.85) and healthy individuals (M ± SD: 93.71 ± 25.24) groups (P > 0.05). There was a significant correlation between experiential avoidance and emotion regulation difficulties in people who stutter (P < 0.01). Experiential avoidance and repetitive negative thinking can significantly predict emotion regulation difficulties in people who stutter (R = 0.65, P < 0.01). Conclusion: People who stutter obtained higher emotion regulation difficulties and experiential avoidance scores than those without stuttering and A significant correlation between experiential avoidance and emotion regulation difficulties was found.
