Search

The region of $N\approx Z\approx 40$ has long been associated with strongly deformed nuclear configurations. The presence of this strong deformation was recently confirmed through lifetime measurements in $N\approx Z$ Sr and Zr nuclei. Theoretically, however, these nuclei present a challenge due to the vast valence space required to incorporate all deformation driving interactions. Recent state-of-the-art predictions indicate a near axial prolate deformation for $N=Z$ and $N=Z+2$ nuclei between $N=Z=36$ and $N=Z=40$. In this work we investigate the shores of this island of deformation through a sub-barrier Coulomb excitation study of the $N=Z+4$ nucleus, \textsuperscript{80}Sr. Extracting a spectroscopic quadrupole moment of $Q_s(2^+_1) = 0.45^{+0.83}_{-0.88}$~eb, we find that \textsuperscript{80}Sr is inconsistent with significant axial prolate deformation. This indicates that the predicted region of strong prolate deformation around $N=Z=40$ is tightly constrained to the quartet of nuclei: \textsuperscript{76,78}Sr and \textsuperscript{78,80}Zr., Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters B

The properties of a nanosecond isomer in $^{32}$Si, disputed in previous studies, depend on the evolution of proton and neutron shell gaps near the `island of inversion'. We have placed the isomer at 5505.2(2) keV with $J^{\pi} = 5^-$, decaying primarily via an $E3$ transition to the $2^+_1$ state. The $E3$ strength of 0.0841(10) W.u. is unusually small and suggests that this isomer is dominated by the $(\nu d_{3/2})^{-1} \otimes (\nu f_{7/2})^{1}$ configuration, which is sensitive to the $N=20$ shell gap. A newly observed $4^+_1$ state is placed at 5881.4(13) keV; its energy is enhanced by the $Z=14$ subshell closure. This indicates that the isomer is located in a `yrast trap', a feature rarely seen at low mass numbers., Comment: Accepted, Physical Review C

Undesired coupling to the surrounding environment destroys long-range correlations on quantum processors and hinders the coherent evolution in the nominally available computational space. This incoherent noise is an outstanding challenge to fully leverage the computation power of near-term quantum processors. It has been shown that benchmarking Random Circuit Sampling (RCS) with Cross-Entropy Benchmarking (XEB) can provide a reliable estimate of the effective size of the Hilbert space coherently available. The extent to which the presence of noise can trivialize the outputs of a given quantum algorithm, i.e. making it spoofable by a classical computation, is an unanswered question. Here, by implementing an RCS algorithm we demonstrate experimentally that there are two phase transitions observable with XEB, which we explain theoretically with a statistical model. The first is a dynamical transition as a function of the number of cycles and is the continuation of the anti-concentration point in the noiseless case. The second is a quantum phase transition controlled by the error per cycle; to identify it analytically and experimentally, we create a weak link model which allows varying the strength of noise versus coherent evolution. Furthermore, by presenting an RCS experiment with 67 qubits at 32 cycles, we demonstrate that the computational cost of our experiment is beyond the capabilities of existing classical supercomputers, even when accounting for the inevitable presence of noise. Our experimental and theoretical work establishes the existence of transitions to a stable computationally complex phase that is reachable with current quantum processors.

A novel pathway for the formation of multi-particle-multi-hole (np-mh) excited states in rare isotopes is reported from highly energy- and momentum-dissipative inelastic-scattering events measured in reactions of an intermediate-energy beam of 38Ca on a Be target. The negative-parity,complex-structure final states in 38Ca were observed following the in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy of events in the 9Be(38Ca,38Ca+gamma)X reaction in which the scattered projectile lost longitudinal momentum of order p = 700 MeV/c. The characteristics of the observed final states are discussed and found to be consistent with the formation of excited states involving the rearrangement of multiple nucleons in a single, highly-energetic projectile-target collision. Unlike the far-less dissipative, surface-grazing reactions usually exploited for the in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy of rare isotopes, these more energetic collisions appear to offer a practical pathway to nuclear-structure studies of more complex multi-particle configurations in rare isotopes - final states conventionally thought to be out of reach with high-luminosity fast-beam-induced reactions., Comment: Accepted in Phys Rev Lett. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2210.01106

The neutron-deficient Ca isotopes continue to attract attention due to their importance for testing isospin symmetry and their relevance in capture reactions of interest for nova nucleosynthesis and the shape of light curves in Type I X-ray bursts. To date, spectroscopic information on 38,39 Ca is largely limited to data on lower-spin excited states. Here, we report in-beam {\gamma}-ray spectroscopy of complementary higher-spin, complex-structure states in 39 Ca populated in fast-beam-induced, momentum-dissipative processes leading to neutron pickup onto excited configurations of the projectile, 9 Be(38 Ca , 39 Ca + {\gamma})X. Such a dissipative reaction was recently characterized for the case of inelastic scattering of 38 Ca off 9 Be, 9 Be(38 Ca, 38 Ca + {\gamma})X. Additional data and discussion on the nuclear structure of 38 Ca is also presented. An explanation for the more-complex-structure states, populated with small cross sections in one-nucleon knockout reactions, and observed in the tails of their longitudinal momentum distributions, is also offered., Comment: Submitted to Phys. The low-spin structure of the semimagic 64Ni nucleus has been considerably expanded: combining four experiments, several 0+ and 2+ excited states were identified below 4.5 MeV, and their properties established. The Monte Carlo shell model accounts for the results and unveils an unexpectedly complex landscape of coexisting shapes: a prolate 0+ excitation is located at a surprisingly high energy (3463 keV), with a collective 2+ state 286 keV above it, the first such observation in Ni isotopes. The evolution in excitation energy of the prolate minimum across the neutron N = 40 subshell gap highlights the impact of the monopole interaction and its variation in strength with N.

We report on the first in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy of the proton-dripline nucleus $^{40}$Sc using two-nucleon pickup onto an intermediate-energy rare-isotope beam of $^{38}$Ca. The $^{9}$Be($^{38}$Ca,$^{40}$Sc$+\gamma$)X reaction at 60.9 MeV/nucleon mid-target energy selectively populates states in $^{40}$Sc for which the transferred proton and neutron couple to high orbital angular momentum. In turn, due to angular-momentum selection rules in proton emission and the nuclear structure and energetics of $^{39}$Ca, such states in $^{40}$Sc then exhibit $\gamma$-decay branches although they are well above the proton separation energy. This work uniquely complements results from particle spectroscopy following charge-exchange reactions on $^{40}$Ca as well as $^{40}$Ti EC/$\beta^+$ decay which both display very different selectivities. The population and $\gamma$-ray decay of the previously known first $(5^-)$ state at 892 keV and the observation of a new level at 2744 keV are discussed in comparison to the mirror nucleus and shell-model calculations. On the experimental side, this work shows that high-resolution in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy is possible with new generation Ge arrays for reactions induced by rare-isotope beams on the level of a few $\mu$b of cross section., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. We report the pressure (p_max = 1.5 GPa) evolution of the crystal structure of the Weyl semimetal T_d-MoTe_2 by means of neutron diffraction experiments. We find that the fundamental non-centrosymmetric structure T_d is fully suppressed and transforms into a centrosymmertic 1T' structure at a critical pressure of p_cr = 1.2 GPa. This is strong evidence for a pressure induced quantum phase transition (QPT) between topological to a trivial electronic state. Although the topological QPT has strong effect on magnetoresistance, it is interesting that the superconducting critical temperature T_c, the superfluid density, and the SC gap all change smoothly and continuously across p_cr and no sudden effects are seen concomitantly with the suppression of the T_d structure. This implies that the T_c, and thus the SC pairing strength, is unaffected by the topological QPT. However, the QPT requires the change in the SC gap symmetry from non-trivial s+- to a trivial s++ state, which we discuss in this work. Our systematic characterizations of the structure and superconducting properties associated with the topological QPT provide deep insight into the pressure induced phase diagram in this topological quantum material., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

New experimental data obtained from $\gamma$-ray tagged one-neutron and one-proton knockout from $^{55}$Co is presented. A candidate for the sought-after $T=1, T_z = 0, J^{\pi} = 6^+$ state in $^{54}$Co is proposed based on a comparison to the new data on $^{54}$Fe, the corresponding observables predicted by large-scale-shell-model (LSSM) calculations in the full $fp$-model space employing charge-dependent contributions, and isospin-symmetry arguments. Furthermore, possible isospin-symmetry breaking in the $A=54$, $T=1$ triplet is studied by calculating the experimental $c$ coefficients of the isobaric mass multiplet equation (IMME) up to the maximum possible spin $J=6$ expected for the $(1f_{7/2})^{-2}$ two-hole configuration relative to the doubly-magic nucleus $^{56}$Ni. The experimental quantities are compared to the theoretically predicted $c$ coefficients from LSSM calculations using two-body matrix elements obtained from a realistic chiral effective field theory potential at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO)., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. Simpson and Tostevin proposed that the width and shape of exclusive parallel momentum distributions of the A-2 residue in direct two-nucleon knockout reactions carry a measurable sensitivity to the nucleon single-particle configurations and their couplings within the wave functions of exotic nuclei. We report here on the first benchmarks and use of this new spectroscopic tool. Exclusive parallel momentum distributions for states in the neutron-deficient nuclei $^{22}$Mg, $^{23}$Al, and $^{24}$Si populated in such direct two-neutron removal reactions were extracted and compared to predictions combining eikonal reaction theory and shell-model calculations. For the well-known $^{22}$Mg and $^{23}$Al nuclei, measurements and calculations were found to agree, supporting the dependence of the parallel momentum distribution width on the angular momentum composition of the shell-model two-neutron amplitudes. In $^{24}$Si, a level at 3439(9) keV, of relevance for the important $^{23}$Al(p,$\gamma$)$^{24}$Si astrophysical reaction rate, was confirmed to be the $2^+_2$ state, while the $4^+_1$ state, expected to be strongly populated in two-neutron knockout, was not observed. This puzzle is resolved by theoretical considerations of the Thomas-Ehrman shift, which also suggest that a previously reported 3471-keV state in $^{24}$Si is in fact the ($0^+_2$) level with one of the largest experimental mirror-energy shifts ever observed., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. An extensive, model-independent analysis of the nature of triaxial deformation in $^{76}$Ge, a candidate for neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay, was carried out following multi-step Coulomb excitation. Shape parameters deduced on the basis of a rotational-invariant sum-rule analysis provided considerable insight into the underlying collectivity of the ground-state and $\gamma$ bands. Both sequences were determined to be characterized by the same $\beta$ and $\gamma$ deformation parameter values. In addition, compelling evidence for low-spin, rigid triaxial deformation in $^{76}$Ge was obtained for the first time from the analysis of the statistical fluctuations of the quadrupole asymmetry deduced from the measured $E2$ matrix elements. These newly determined shape parameters are important input and constraints for calculations aimed at providing, with suitable accuracy, the nuclear matrix elements relevant to $0\nu\beta\beta$., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We present a high-resolution in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy study of excited states in the mirror nuclei $^{55}$Co and $^{55}$Ni following one-nucleon knockout from a projectile beam of $^{56}$Ni. The newly determined partial cross sections and the $\gamma$-decay properties of excited states provide a test of state-of-the-art nuclear structure models and probe mirror symmetry in unique ways. A mirror asymmetry for the partial cross sections leading to the two lowest $3/2^-$ states in the $A = 55$ mirror pair was identified as well as a significant difference in the $E1$ decays from the $1/2^+_1$ state to the same two $3/2^-$ states. The mirror asymmetry in the partial cross sections cannot be reconciled with the present shell-model picture or small mixing introduced in a two-state model. The observed mirror asymmetry in the $E1$ decay pattern, however, points at stronger mixing between the two lowest $3/2^-$ states in $^{55}$Co than in its mirror $^{55}$Ni.

A more detailed test of the implementation of nuclear forces that drive shell evolution in the pivotal nucleus \nuc{42}{Si} -- going beyond earlier comparisons of excited-state energies -- is important. The two leading shell-model effective interactions, SDPF-MU and SDPF-U-Si, both of which reproduce the low-lying \nuc{42}{Si}($2^+_1$) energy, but whose predictions for other observables differ significantly, are interrogated by the population of states in neutron-rich \nuc{42}{Si} with a one-proton removal reaction from \nuc{43}{P} projectiles at 81~MeV/nucleon. The measured cross sections to the individual \nuc{42}{Si} final states are compared to calculations that combine eikonal reaction dynamics with these shell-model nuclear structure overlaps. The differences in the two shell-model descriptions are examined and linked to predicted low-lying excited $0^+$ states and shape coexistence. Based on the present data, which are in better agreement with the SDPF-MU calculations, the state observed at 2150(13)~keV in \nuc{42}{Si} is proposed to be the ($0^+_2$) level., Comment: accepted in Physical Review Letters

Spin orbit coupling (SOC) is the key to realizing time-reversal invariant topological phases of matter. Famously, SOC was predicted by Kane and Mele to stabilize a quantum spin Hall insulator; however, the weak intrinsic SOC in monolayer graphene has precluded experimental observation. Here, we exploit a layer-selective proximity effect---achieved via van der Waals contact to a semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide--to engineer Kane-Mele SOC in ultra-clean \textit{bilayer} graphene. Using high-resolution capacitance measurements to probe the bulk electronic compressibility, we find that SOC leads to the formation of a distinct incompressible, gapped phase at charge neutrality. The experimental data agrees quantitatively with a simple theoretical model in which the new phase results from SOC-driven band inversion. In contrast to Kane-Mele SOC in monolayer graphene, the inverted phase is not expected to be a time reversal invariant topological insulator, despite being separated from conventional band insulators by electric field tuned phase transitions where crystal symmetry mandates that the bulk gap must close. Electrical transport measurements, conspicuously, reveal that the inverted phase has a conductivity $\sim e^2/h$, which is suppressed by exceptionally small in-plane magnetic fields. The high conductivity and anomalous magnetoresistance are consistent with theoretical models that predict helical edge states within the inversted phase, that are protected from backscattering by an emergent spin symmetry that remains robust even for large Rashba SOC. Two dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) based semiconductors have generated intense recent interest due to their novel optical and electronic properties, and potential for applications. In this work, we characterize the atomic and electronic nature of intrinsic point defects found in single crystals of these materials synthesized by two different methods - chemical vapor transport and self-flux growth. Using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), we show that the two major intrinsic defects in these materials are metal vacancies and chalcogen antisites. We show that by control of the synthetic conditions, we can reduce the defect concentration from above $10^{13} /cm^2$ to below $10^{11} /cm^2$. Because these point defects act as centers for non-radiative recombination of excitons, this improvement in material quality leads to a hundred-fold increase in the radiative recombination efficiency.

We present a detailed quantum oscillatory study on the Dirac type-II semimetallic candidates PdTe$_{2}$ and PtTe$_{2}$ \emph{via} the temperature and the angular dependence of the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) and Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) effects. In high quality single crystals of both compounds, i.e. displaying carrier mobilities between $10^3$ and $10^4$ cm$^2$/Vs, we observed a large non-saturating magnetoresistivity (MR) which in PtTe$_2$ at a temperature $T = 1.3$ K, leads to an increase in the resistivity up to $5 \times 10^{4}$ % under a magnetic field $\mu_0 H = 62$ T. These high mobilities correlate with their light effective masses in the range of 0.04 to 1 bare electron mass according to our measurements. For PdTe$_{2}$ the experimentally determined Fermi surface cross-sectional areas show an excellent agreement with those resulting from band-structure calculations. Surprisingly, this is not the case for PtTe$_{2}$ whose agreement between calculations and experiments is relatively poor even when electronic correlations are included in the calculations. Therefore, our study provides a strong support for the existence of a Dirac type-II node in PdTe$_2$ and probably also for PtTe$_2$. Band structure calculations indicate that the topologically non-trivial bands of PtTe$_2$ do not cross the Fermi-level ($\varepsilon_F$). In contrast, for PdTe$_2$ the Dirac type-II cone does intersect $\varepsilon_F$, although our calculations also indicate that the associated cyclotron orbit on the Fermi surface is located in a distinct $k_z$ plane with respect to the one of the Dirac type-II node. We report complex metamagnetic transitions in single crystals of the new low carrier Kondo antiferromagnet YbRh3Si7. Electrical transport, magnetization, and specific heat measurements reveal antiferromagnetic order at T_N = 7.5 K. Neutron diffraction measurements show that the magnetic ground state of YbRh3Si7 is a collinear antiferromagnet where the moments are aligned in the ab plane. With such an ordered state, no metamagnetic transitions are expected when a magnetic field is applied along the c axis. It is therefore surprising that high field magnetization, torque, and resistivity measurements with H||c reveal two metamagnetic transitions at mu_0H_1 = 6.7 T and mu_0H_2 = 21 T. When the field is tilted away from the c axis, towards the ab plane, both metamagnetic transitions are shifted to higher fields. The first metamagnetic transition leads to an abrupt increase in the electrical resistivity, while the second transition is accompanied by a dramatic reduction in the electrical resistivity. Thus, the magnetic and electronic degrees of freedom in YbRh3Si7 are strongly coupled. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are interesting for understanding fundamental physics of two-dimensional materials (2D) as well as for many emerging technologies, including spin electronics. Here, we report the discovery of long-range magnetic order below TM = 40 K and 100 K in bulk semiconducting TMDs 2H-MoTe2 and 2H-MoSe2, respectively, by means of muon spin-rotation (muSR), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The muon spin rotation measurements show the presence of a large and homogeneous internal magnetic fields at low temperatures in both compounds indicative of long-range magnetic order. DFT calculations show that this magnetism is promoted by the presence of defects in the crystal. The STM measurements show that the vast majority of defects in these materials are metal vacancies and chalcogen-metal antisites which are randomly distributed in the lattice at the sub-percent level. DFT indicates that the antisite defects are magnetic with a magnetic moment in the range of 0.9-2.8 mu_B. Further, we find that the magnetic order stabilized in 2H-MoTe2 and 2H-MoSe2 is highly sensitive to hydrostatic pressure. These observations establish 2H-MoTe2 and 2H-MoSe2 as a new class of magnetic semiconductors and opens a path to studying the interplay of 2D physics and magnetism in these interesting semiconductors., Comment: 13 pages, 10 Figures

We evaluate the topological character of TaAs through a detailed study of the angular, magnetic-field and temperature dependence of its magnetoresistivity and Hall-effect(s), and of its bulk electronic structure through quantum oscillatory phenomena. At low temperatures, and for fields perpendicular to the electrical current, we extract an extremely large Hall angle $\Theta_H$ at higher fields, that is $\Theta_H \sim 82.5^{\circ}$, implying a very pronounced Hall signal superimposed into its magnetoresistivity. For magnetic fields and electrical currents perpendicular to the \emph{c}-axis we observe a very pronounced planar Hall-effect, when the magnetic field is rotated within the basal plane. This effect is observed even at higher temperatures, i.e. as high as $T = 100$ K, and predicted recently to result from the chiral anomaly among Weyl points. Superimposed onto this planar Hall, which is an even function of the field, we observe an anomalous planar Hall-signal akin to the one reported for that is an odd function of the field. Below 100 K, negative longitudinal magnetoresistivity (LMR), initially ascribed to the chiral anomaly and subsequently to current inhomogeneities, is observed in samples having different geometries and contact configurations, once the large Hall signal is subtracted. Our measurements reveal a phase transition upon approaching the quantum limit that leads to the reconstruction of the FS and to the concomitant suppression of the negative LMR indicating that it is intrinsically associated with the Weyl dispersion at the Fermi level. For fields along the \emph{a}-axis it also leads to a pronounced hysteresis pointing to a field-induced electronic phase-transition. MoTe$_2$ is an exfoliable transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) which crystallizes in three symmetries, the semiconducting trigonal-prismatic $2H-$phase, the semimetallic $1T^{\prime}$ monoclinic phase, and the semimetallic orthorhombic $T_d$ structure. The $2H-$phase displays a band gap of $\sim 1$ eV making it appealing for flexible and transparent optoelectronics. The $T_d-$phase is predicted to possess unique topological properties which might lead to topologically protected non-dissipative transport channels. Recently, it was argued that it is possible to locally induce phase-transformations in TMDs, through chemical doping, local heating, or electric-field to achieve ohmic contacts or to induce useful functionalities such as electronic phase-change memory elements. The combination of semiconducting and topological elements based upon the same compound, might produce a new generation of high performance, low dissipation optoelectronic elements. Here, we show that it is possible to engineer the phases of MoTe$_2$ through W substitution by unveiling the phase-diagram of the Mo$_{1-x}$W$_x$Te$_2$ solid solution which displays a semiconducting to semimetallic transition as a function of $x$. We find that only $\sim 8$ \% of W stabilizes the $T_d-$phase at room temperature. Here, we report a systematic study on the Hall-effect of the semi-metallic state of bulk MoTe$_2$, which was recently claimed to be a candidate for a novel type of Weyl semi-metallic state. The temperature ($T$) dependence of the carrier densities and of their mobilities, as estimated from a numerical analysis based on the isotropic two-carrier model, indicates that its exceedingly large and non-saturating magnetoresistance may be attributed to a near perfect compensation between the densities of electrons and holes at low temperatures. A sudden increase in hole density, with a concomitant rapid increase in the electron mobility below $T \sim 40$ K, leads to comparable densities of electrons and holes at low temperatures suggesting a possible electronic phase-transition around this temperature., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Both Nb$_3$Pd$_x$Se$_7$ and Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$ crystallize in a monoclinic point group while exhibiting superconducting transition temperatures as high as $T_c\sim 3.5$ and $\sim 4.7 $ K, respectively. Disorder was claimed to lead to the extremely large upper critical fields ($H_{c2}$) observed in related compounds. Despite the presence of disorder and heavier elements, $H_{c2}$s in Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$ are found to be considerably smaller than those of Nb$_3$Pd$_x$Se$_7$ while displaying an anomalous, non-saturating linear dependence on temperature $T$ for fields along all three crystallographic axes. In contrast, crystals of the latter compound displaying the highest $T_c$s display $H_{c2}\propto (1-T/T_c)^{1/2}$, which in monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides is claimed to be evidence for an Ising paired superconducting state resulting from strong spin-orbit coupling. This anomalous $T$-dependence indicates that the superconducting state of Nb$_3$Pd$_x$Se$_7$ is quasi-two-dimensional in nature. This is further supported by a nearly divergent anisotropy in upper-critical fields, i.e. $\gamma= H_{c2}^{b}/H_{c2}^{a^{\prime}}$, upon approaching $T_c$. Hence, in Nb$_3$Pd$_x$Se$_7$ the increase of $T_c$ correlates with a marked reduction in electronic dimensionality as observed, for example, in intercalated FeSe. For the Nb compound, Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that an increase in the external field produces an anisotropic orbital response, with especially strong polarization at the Pd sites when the field is perpendicular to their square planar environment. Therefore, DFT suggests the field-induced pinning of the spin to the lattice as a possible mechanism for decoupling the superconducting planes. The electronic structure of WTe$_2$ and orthorhombic $\gamma-$MoTe$_2$, are claimed to contain pairs of Weyl type-II points. A series of ARPES experiments claim a broad agreement with these predictions. We synthesized single-crystals of MoTe$_2$ through a Te flux method to validate these predictions through measurements of its bulk Fermi surface (FS) \emph{via} quantum oscillatory phenomena. We find that the superconducting transition temperature of $\gamma-$MoTe$_2$ depends on disorder as quantified by the ratio between the room- and low-temperature resistivities, suggesting the possibility of an unconventional superconducting pairing symmetry. Similarly to WTe$_2$, the magnetoresistivity of $\gamma-$MoTe$_2$ does not saturate at high magnetic fields and can easily surpass $10^{6}$ \%. Remarkably, the analysis of the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) signal superimposed onto the magnetic torque, indicates that the geometry of its FS is markedly distinct from the calculated one. The dHvA signal also reveals that the FS is affected by the Zeeman-effect precluding the extraction of the Berry-phase. A direct comparison between the previous ARPES studies and density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations reveals a disagreement in the position of the valence bands relative to the Fermi level $\varepsilon_F$. Here, we show that a shift of the DFT valence bands relative to $\varepsilon_F$, in order to match the ARPES observations, and of the DFT electron bands to explain some of the observed dHvA frequencies, leads to a good agreement between the calculations and the angular dependence of the FS cross-sectional areas observed experimentally. However, this relative displacement between electron- and hole-bands eliminates their crossings and, therefore, the Weyl type-II points predicted for $\gamma-$MoTe$_2$., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, supplementary file not included (in press)

Results are reported for single crystal specimens of Hf$_2$Te$_2$P and compared to its structural analogue Zr$_2$Te$_2$P, which was recently proposed to be a potential reservoir for Dirac physics.[1] Both materials are produced using the iodine vapor transport method and the resulting crystals are exfoliable. The bulk electrical transport and thermodynamic properties indicate Fermi liquid behavior at low temperature for both compounds. Quantum oscillations are observed in magnetization measurements for fields applied parallel but not perpendicular to the $c$-axis, suggesting that the Fermi surfaces are quasi-two dimensional. Frequencies are determined from quantum oscillations for several parts of the Fermi surfaces. Lifshitz-Kosevich fits to the temperature dependent amplitudes of the oscillations reveal small effective masses, with a particularly small value $m^*$ $=$ 0.046$m_0$ for the {\alpha} branch of Zr$_2$Te$_2$P. Electronic structure calculations are in good agreement with quantum oscillation results and illustrate the effect of a stronger spin-orbit interaction going from Zr to Hf. These results suggest that by using appropriate tuning parameters this class of materials may deepen the pool of novel Dirac phenomena.

Here, we present a detailed study on the temperature and angular dependence of the Shubnikov-de-Haas (SdH) effect in the semi-metal WTe$_2$. This compound was recently shown to display a very large non-saturating magnetoresistance which was attributed to nearly perfectly compensated densities of electrons and holes. We observe four fundamental SdH frequencies and attribute them to spin-orbit split, electron- and hole-like, Fermi surface (FS) cross-sectional areas. Their angular dependence seems consistent with ellipsoidal FSs with volumes suggesting a modest excess in the density of electrons with respect to that of the holes. We show that density functional theory (DFT) calculations fail to correctly describe the FSs of WTe$_2$. When their cross-sectional areas are adjusted to reflect the experimental data, the resulting volumes of the electron/hole FSs obtained from the DFT calculations would imply a pronounced imbalance between the densities of electrons and holes. We find evidence for field-dependent Fermi surface cross-sectional areas by fitting the oscillatory component superimposed onto the magnetoresistivity signal to several Lifshitz-Kosevich components. We also observe a pronounced field-induced renormalization of the effective masses. Taken together, our observations suggest that the electronic structure of WTe$_2$ evolves with the magnetic field. Here, we present a temperature ($T$) dependent comparison between field-effect and Hall mobilities in field-effect transistors based on few-layered WSe$_2$ exfoliated onto SiO$_2$. Without dielectric engineering and beyond a $T$-dependent threshold gate-voltage, we observe maximum hole mobilities approaching 350 cm$^2$/Vs at $T$=300 K. The hole Hall mobility reaches a maximum value of 650 cm$^2$/Vs as $T$ is lowered below $\sim$ 150 K, indicating that insofar WSe$_2$-based field-effect transistors (FETs) display the largest Hall mobilities among the transition metal dichalcogenides. The gate capacitance, as extracted from the Hall-effect, reveals the presence of spurious charges in the channel, while the two-terminal sheet resistivity displays two-dimensional variable-range hopping behavior, indicating carrier localization induced by disorder at the interface between WSe$_2$ and SiO$_2$. We argue that improvements in the fabrication protocols as, for example, the use of a substrate free of dangling bonds are likely to produce WSe$_2$-based FETs displaying higher room temperature mobilities, i.e. approaching those of $p$-doped Si, which would make it a suitable candidate for high performance opto-electronics., Comment: 35 pages including supplementary information. 7 figures in main text, 4 figures in supplementary file

Here, we unveil evidence for a quantum phase-transition in CeCu_2Ge_2 which displays both an incommensurate spin-density wave (SDW) ground-state, and a strong renormalization of the quasiparticle effective masses (mu) due to the Kondo-effect. For all angles theta between an external magnetic field (H) and the crystallographic c-axis, the application of H leads to the suppression of the SDW-state through a 2^nd-order phase-transition at a theta-dependent critical-field H_p(theta) leading to the observation of small Fermi surfaces (FSs) in the paramagnetic (PM) state. For H || c-axis, these FSs are characterized by light mu's pointing also to the suppression of the Kondo-effect at H_p with surprisingly, no experimental evidence for quantum-criticality (QC). But as $H$ is rotated towards the a-axis, these mu's increase considerably becoming undetectable for \theta > 56^0 between H and the c-axis. Around H_p^a~ 30 T the resistivity becomes proportional T which, coupled to the divergence of mu, indicates the existence of a field-induced QC-point at H_p^a(T=0 K). This observation, suggesting FS hot-spots associated with the SDW nesting-vector, is at odds with current QC scenarios for which the continuous suppression of all relevant energy scales at H_p(theta,T) should lead to a line of quantum-critical points in the H-theta plane. Finally, we show that the complexity of its magnetic phase-diagram(s) makes CeCu_2Ge_2 an ideal system to explore field-induced quantum tricritical and QC end-points., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, Phys. URu$_2$Si$_2$ is claimed to be a chiral \emph{d}-wave superconductor with a $k_z (k_x \pm ik_y)$ time-reversal symmetry broken orbital component for the Cooper pair wave-function, which contains both nodal points and lines of nodes \cite{kasahara, kasahara2}. To study the magnetic response of such an unconventional state through a bulk, thermodynamic probe, we measured the magnetic torque $\tau$ in very high-quality, well-characterized URu$_2$Si$_2$ single-crystals \cite{altarawneh,altarawneh2} at high magnetic-fields $H$ and at very low temperatures $T$. The magnetization $M(H) \propto \tau(H) /H$ of URu$_2$Si$_2$, in its superconducting state and for angles within $15^{\circ}$ from the \emph{ab}-plane, reveals a change in its sign for $H$ approaching $H_{c2}$: from a clear diamagnetic response dominated by the pinning of vortices to a state with a smaller but "paramagnetic-like" hysteretic response which \emph{disappears} at $H_{c2}$, thus implying that it is intrinsically related to the superconducting state. We argue that this anomalous, angular-dependent behavior is evidence for a time-reversal symmetry broken superconducting state in URu$_2$Si$_2$, although not necessarily for the $k_z (k_x \pm ik_y)$ state., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We report the discovery of superconductivity in Nb$_3$Pd$_{x}$Se$_7$ with a $x$-dependent superconducting transition-temperature as high as $T_c \simeq 2.1 $ K for $x \simeq0.7$ (middle point of the resistive transition). Needle-like single crystals display anisotropic upper-critical fields with an anisotropy $\gamma = H^{b}_{c2}/H^{a}_{c2}$ as large as 6 between fields applied along their needle axis (or $b-$axis) or along the $a-$axis. As for the Fe based superconductors $\gamma$ is temperature-dependent suggesting that Nb$_3$Pd$_{0.7}$Se$_7$ is a multi-band superconductor. This is supported by band structure calculations which reveal a Fermi surface composed of quasi-one-dimensional and quasi-two-dimensional sheets of hole character, as well as three-dimensional sheets of both hole- and electron-character. Remarkably, $H^{b}_{c2}$ is observed to saturate at $H^{b}_{c2}(T \rightarrow 0 \text{K}) \simeq 14.1$ T which is $4.26 \times H_p$ where $H_p$ is the Pauli-limiting field in the weak-coupling regime. The synthesis procedure yields additional crystals belonging to the Nb$_2$Pd$_{x}$Se$_5$ phase which also becomes superconducting when the fraction of Pd is varied. For both phases we find that superconductivity condenses out of an anomalous metallic state, i.e. displaying $\partial \rho/ \partial T < 0$ above $T_c$ similarly to what is observed in the pseudogap-phase of the underdoped cuprates. Here, we report the discovery of superconductivity in a new transition metal-chalcogenide compound, i.e. Nb2Pd0.81S5, with a transition temperature Tc > 6.6 K. Despite its relatively low Tc, it displays remarkably high and anisotropic superconducting upper critical fields, e.g. mu_0 H_{c2} (T approaching 0 K). 37 T for fields applied along the crystallographic b-axis. For a field applied perpendicularly to the b-axis, mu_0 H_{c2} shows a linear dependence in temperature which coupled to a temperature-dependent anisotropy of the upper critical fields, suggests that Nb2Pd0.81S5 is a multi-band superconductor. This is consistent with band structure calculations which reveal nearly cylindrical and quasi-one-dimensional Fermi surface sheets having hole and electron character, respectively. The static spin susceptibility as calculated through the random phase approximation, reveals strong peaks suggesting proximity to a magnetic state and therefore the possibility of unconventional superconductivity., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

By fabricating and characterizing multi-layered MoS$_2$-based field-effect transistors (FETs) in a four terminal configuration, we demonstrate that the two terminal-configurations tend to underestimate the carrier mobility $\mu$ due to the Schottky barriers at the contacts. For a back-gated two-terminal configuration we observe mobilities as high as 125 cm$^2$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$ which is considerably smaller than 306.5 cm$^2$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$ as extracted from the same device when using a four-terminal configuration. This indicates that the intrinsic mobility of MoS$_2$ on SiO$_2$ is significantly larger than the values previously reported, and provides a quantitative method to evaluate the charge transport through the contacts., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, typos fixed, and references updated
