Current research trend is the identification of psychosocial variables that moderate and/or mediate the association between stressors and psychopathological symptoms. Research has shown Locus of Control (LoC) is a key cognitive component of this psychological process in adolescents from individualist cultures. Estudar a correspondência entre diferentes níveis de análise da interação pais-bebê/criança pode nos ajudar a chegar a uma linguagem mais comum e a compartilhar conceitos que permitam trocas mais frutíferas entre pesquisadores com diferentes orientações teóricas e metodológicas. Os autores do presente artigo representam alguns dos principais grupos de pesquisa brasileiros voltados à investigação da interação pais-bebê/criança. São apresentadas as diferentes perspectivas dos autores e discutidas as suas aproximações e diferenças, visando a demonstrar a complexidade e a diversidade de abordagens com relação às interações pais-bebê/criança e seu papel no desenvolvimento. Embora a definição de interação não seja consensual, verificase uma tendência entre os autores a considerar explicitamente a questão da ação recíproca, da co-construção e da bidirecionalidade. Não obstante o foco no comportamento manifesto e na ação recíproca existe também consciência de que as transações implícitas e as representações individuais e sociais influenciam a interação, e que há que se desenvolver procedimentos metodológicos rigorosos para estudá-las. Espera-se que a continuidade das discussões leve ao aprimoramento e à articulação das diversas propostas aqui apresentadas. The study of corresponding levels of analysis in the parent-infant/child interaction may lead us to a common language and shared concepts, that in turn will hopefully aid in the prolific exchanges among researchers from various theoretical and methodological backgrounds. The authors of this article represent some of the most prominent research teams of Brazil engaged in the study of parent-infant/child interaction. Their various perspectives are presented, as are their points of agreement and disagreement, with the purpose of demonstrating both the complexity and the diversity of approaches to the parent-infant/child interactions and their role in development. Although there is no consensual definition of interaction, there is a tendency of the authors to consider the question of reciprocal actions, co-construction, and bidirectionality. Granting that there is a trend to focus on manifested behavior and interaction, there is also a clear awareness that implicit transactions and social representations must be studied through rigorous methodological procedures, insofar as they influence interactions. It is hoped that, as these discussions progress, the ideas proposed herein will be both improved and better disseminated.

Interações iniciais parecem ser adaptativas, e conhecê-las é fundamental para compreender a ontogênese humana. Este estudo compara dados de observações de díades mãe-bebê, analisando os comportamentos dos parceiros, a complexidade das trocas e seu componente afetivo. Participaram 56 díades (28 com bebês de um mês e 28 com bebês de cinco meses), filmadas em suas casas em situações livres. Foram identificados e analisados episódios de interação. Os resultados indicaram efeito do fator tipo de díade (de bebês de um ou de cinco meses) em quatro variáveis dependentes que indicam complexidade das interações. Diferenças foram observadas nos dois grupos quanto à manifestação de afetividade recíproca dos parceiros. As interações mostram-se predominantemente de tipo face-a face quando os bebês têm um mês e de estimulação por objeto aos cinco meses, indicando assim uma tendência observada em grupos urbanos ocidentais. As manifestações afetivas e a presença de interações que envolvem o sistema de contato corporal levam a que se hipotetize um padrão de autonomia relacional. Os resultados confirmam a literatura quanto à possibilidade de trocas em etapas iniciais do desenvolvimento, e o estudo contribui para o conhecimento de suas características. É destacada a afetividade, e enfatizado seu papel constitutivo nas interações, de fundamental importância no desenvolvimento infantil. Early interactions seem to be adaptive, it is fundamental to know them in order to understand human ontogenesis. This study compares data of observations of mother-baby dyads, analyzing the behavior of the partners, the complexity of the interchanges and their affective components. The participants were 56 dyads (28 with one-month old babies and 28 with five-month old babies), filmed in their homes in free situations. Interaction episodes were identified and analyzed. The results showed the effect of the factor type of dyad (one or five months-old babies) in four dependent variables that indicate complexity of the interactions. Differences in the manifestation of reciprocal affectivity of the partners were observed in the two groups. The interactions were predominantly face-to-face when the babies are one-month old, and the system of object stimulation is predominant when the babies are five-months old. This indicates a tendency observed in Western urban groups. The affective manifestations and the presence of interactions which are characterized by the system of body contact favor the formulation of a hypothesis of the presence of an autonomous relational pattern. The results confirm the literature about the possibility of interchanges in initial stages of the development, and the study contributes for the knowledge of its characteristics. The affective aspect is stressed, and its constitutive role in interactions is emphasized, assuming its importance in child development.

A necessidade de enfocar aspectos socioculturais nas investigações em psicologia tem sido destacada por diferentes autores, em diferentes épocas, e a abordagem sociocultural representa uma fonte conceitual proveitosa neste sentido. Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar e discutir algumas idéias centrais da abordagem sociocultural, mudanças pelas quais esta abordagem passou nas últimas décadas, algumas de suas vertentes e autores. Os conceitos aqui discutidos não esgotam o tema, mas podem ser úteis para tentativas de articular investigações de diferentes temas em psicologia à abordagem sociocultural. As considerações finais apontam no sentido da necessidade de incluir as investigações em psicologia em um cenário conceitual que considere a cultura e o contexto social como elementos centrais, articulando as contribuições da psicologia transcultural e da cultura. The need to approach sociocultural aspects in psychological investigations has been emphasized by different authors in different times, and the sociocultural approach represents a profitable conceptual source in this sense. The purpose of this article was to discuss some concepts of the sociocultural approach, changes by which this approach went through last decades, some of their perspectives and authors. The concepts here discussed can be useful in the attempts to articulate psychological investigations in a sociocultural approach. The conclusions point to the need of including the investigations in psychology into a conceptual approach that considers the culture and the social context as central elements, articulating the contributions of the cross-cultural psychology, and of the culture.

Este estudo visou a analisar características das interações iniciais mãe-bebê em um contexto urbano brasileiro; as relações entre características de interações, atividades maternas e a concepção acerca das competências dos bebês; e as relações entre características destas atividades e o estado de vigília dos bebês. A amostra foi constituída por 30 díades. Os bebês tinham idade média de 29 dias. Registrou-se em vídeo as atividades da díade durante 20 minutos. Foi aplicado um questionário às mães. Os dados foram analisados em termos da percentagem de ocorrências das atividades da díade e de interação. Os episódios de interação identificados foram de curta duração, predominantemente face-a-face, têm contextos específicos de troca e se caracterizam principalmente por atividades sociais. Os bebês foram avaliados como ativos, participantes das trocas sociais. Os resultados contribuem com elementos importantes para discussão da natureza dos primeiros processos interacionais. This study aimed at analyzing the characteristics of initial mother-baby interactions in a Brazilian urban environment; the relationship between the interaction characteristics, mother's activities and their conception about the baby's competences; and the relationship between the characteristic of those activities and the baby's awareness state. A sample of 30 mother-baby dyads was observed. The dyads consisted of mothers and her babies who were, on average, 29-days old. The dyads were videotaped for 20 minutes and the mothers were asked to answer a questionnaire. The data were analyzed in terms of the percentage of the occurrences of the dyad's activities and interaction. The episodes of interaction observed were short-term, mainly face-to-face, having a specific context and mostly distinguished as social activities. The babies were evaluated as active and participant in the social exchange. The results contribute with important elements for the discussion of the nature of the first interactional processes.

A responsividade materna tem sido considerada como um elemento central para a compreensão do desenvolvimento infantil e este conceito tem sido articulado com a teoria do apego. Este artigo tem como objetivo discutir criticamente o papel de estudos transculturais sobre responsividade materna, à luz da teoria do apego, a partir da revisão da literatura recente sobre o tema. Considerando a teoria do apego um referencial valioso para investigações sobre interações mãe-bebê e responsividade materna, as conclusões apontam, basicamente, para três questões: 1) a teoria do apego precisa ser investigada em diferentes contextos socioculturais e receber validação transcultural; 2) pesquisas sobre responsividade materna devem considerar a discussão sobre a teoria do apego e diferenças culturais; 3) a inclusão do estudo da responsividade materna em referenciais teóricos que levem em conta variáveis socioculturais é necessária. Maternal responsiveness has been considered as an important concept for the understanding of different aspects of infant development, and this concept has been articulated with attachment theory. The objective of this article is to discuss critically the role of transcultural studies about maternal responsiveness, based on attachment theory, and to review of the recent literature about this subject. Considering attachment a valuable theoretical basis for investigations on mother-infant interactions and maternal responsiveness, the conclusions basically point to three issues: 1) the attachment theory needs to be investigated in different socio-cultural contexts, to be tested in its limits and to receive a transcultural validation; 2) research on maternal responsiveness should take into account the discussion on attachment theory and cultural differences; 3) the inclusion of the study of maternal responsiveness in a theoretical framework that takes into account socio-cultural variables is necessary.

A imitação em fases iniciais do desenvolvimento tem sido estudada sob diferentes perspectivas teóricas, que atribuem importância e interpretação diferenciadas para seu papel no desenvolvimento infantil. Considera-se que a compreensão da imitação inicial mostra-se extremamente relevante do ponto de vista epistemológico e teórico. Assim, neste trabalho é feito um breve histórico dos estudos sobre imitação, para apresentar uma revisão e discussão das principais evidências empíricas sobre imitação inicial. As explicações teóricas dessas evidências e as hipóteses que foram sendo falseadas a partir das mesmas são analisadas. Finalmente, a relação dessas evidências com o desenvolvimento da percepção e da origem da representação e as implicações para explicações do desenvolvimento inicial são discutidas. Imitation in initial phases of the development has been studied under different theoretical perspectives that gave differentiated importance and interpretation for role of this process on development. This study's assumption is that the understanding of early imitation is extremely relevant from the epistemological and theoretical point of view. Based on this assumption, the history of imitation studies is briefly described before presenting a review and discussion of the main empirical evidences on early imitation. Theoretical explanations and their associated falsified hypotheses are analyzed. Finally, the relation between the evidences about early imitation and perceptual development, and the origins of representation, and their implications for explanations of early development are discussed.

Neste trabalho, adota-se a perspectiva sócio-cultural e pressupõe-se que as interações adulto-bebê são matrizes nas quais se constrói o desenvolvimento. Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo descrever e analisar as transformações nas atividades da mãe e do bebê, nas trocas interativas e nos contextos específicos em que tais atividades e interações ocorrem, em etapas iniciais de desenvolvimento do bebê. Foi realizado o registro em vídeo, em ambiente natural, da observação de uma díade mãe-bebê em quatro momentos de desenvolvimento do bebê: 2, 10, 15 e 21 semanas. Foram analisadas as modificações na natureza das interações, mudanças nas atividades dos parceiros (e.g., vocalização, fala, sorriso), nos tipos de estimulação por parte das mães (e.g., estimulação voltada para a mãe ou voltada para os objeto) e os diferentes contextos de interação. Os resultados obtidos mostraram-se convergentes com achados de pesquisas na área, ampliando-os. Foram identificadas, desde fases iniciais, interações como processos recíprocos de engajamento que tornaram-se mais freqüentes e complexos. Foi possível identificar interações mãe-bebê, caracterizá-las e ilustrar a natureza diferenciada das atividades e interações dos parceiros em momentos distintos do desenvolvimento do bebê. Os resultados apresentados puderam ser interpretados segundo a abordagem sócio-cultural, que considera as interações sociais como constitutivas do desenvolvimento. This study aims at investigating developmental changes in the patterns of mother-infant interaction, at early stages of the baby's development. A mother-infant dyad was observed and video recorded at home at four moments of the baby's development: 02, 10, 15 and 21 weeks. The modifications in the nature of the interaction, in the partners' activities (e.g. vocalization, speech, smile), in the kinds of stimulation promoted by the mother (e.g. directed to herself or to objects), and in the different interactional contexts were examined. Results were consistent with the literature in the area and have expanded it. It was possible to identify interactions as reciprocal processes of engagement which became gradually more frequent and complex. Mother-infant interactions were identified since early stages. They were characterized and illustrated the differentiated nature of activities of the partners and interactions at distinct moments of the baby's development.

Published article at: European Journal of Psychotraumatology Background: Children and adolescents are often exposed to traumatic events, which may lead to the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is therefore important for clinicians to screen for potential symptoms that can be signs of PTSD onset. PTSD in youth is a worldwide problem, thus congruent screening tools in various languages are needed. Objective: The aim of this study was to test the general psychometric properties of the Traumatic Stress Disorder Reaction Index for children and adolescents (UCLA PTSD) Reaction Index for DSM-5 (PTSD-RI-5) in adolescents, a self-report instrument intended to screen for trauma exposure and assess PTSD symptoms. Method: Data was collected from 4201 adolescents in communities within eleven countries worldwide (i.e. Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, Indonesia, Montenegro, Nigeria, Palestine-Gaza, Philippines, Portugal, Romania, and Serbia). Internal consistency, discriminant validity, and a confirmatory factor analysis of a four-factor model representing the main DSM-5 symptoms of the PTSD-RI-5 were evaluated. Results: The PTSD-RI-5 total score for the entire sample shows very good reliability (α = .92) as well as across all countries included (α ranged from .90 to .94). The correlations between anxiety/depressive symptoms and the PTSD-RI-5 scores were below .70 indicating on good discriminant validity. The four-factor structure of the scale was confirmed for the total sample and data from six countries. The standardized regression weights for all items varied markedly across the countries. The lack of a common acceptable model across all countries prevented us from direct testing of cross-cultural measurement invariance.Conclusions: The four-factor structure of the PTSD-RI-5 likely represents the core PTSD symptoms as proposed by the DSM-5 criteria, but there could be items interpreted in a conceptually different manner by adolescents from different cultural/regional backgrounds and future cross-cultural evaluations need to consider this finding. HIGHLIGHTS • The cross-cultural aspects of the DSM-5 PTSD reaction index for youth (PTSD-RI-5) across multiple, worldwide countries were addressed • The four-factor structure of the scale that follows the DSM-5 criteria for PTSD was confirmed • Not all PTSD symptoms as measured by the instrument are relevant to adolescents across different societies. Antecedentes: Los niños y adolescentes a menudo están expuestos a eventos traumáticos, que pueden llevar al desarrollo de un trastorno de estrés postraumático (TEPT). Por lo tanto, es importante que los médicos examinen los posibles síntomas que pueden ser signos del inicio de un TEPT. Este trastorno en jóvenes es un problema global, por lo que se necesitan herramientas de detección congruentes en varios idiomas. Objetivo: El objetivo de este estudio fue probar en adolescentes las propiedades psicométricas generales del Índice de Reacción TEPT de la UCLA para el DSM-5 (PTSD-RI-5), que es un instrumento de auto-reporte destinado a evaluar la exposición al trauma y evaluar los síntomas de PTSD.

It s also thought that: the babies share universal characteristics, interactions are constituent of the development, the parenting investment is a species characteristic, and the shape that each one of these aspects assumes, is directly related to the socio cultural context. From this estimative we re able to think about the changes of the social roles demanded by the occidental urban society s economic system, where the remunerated jobs for women are increasing at a good rate, leading the father to get more space towards the child s, including their engagement in the nursery school. The main aim of this study was to investigate the different aspects concerning the father s engagement with their children, including their involvements on the nursery school s environment. Aiming to bring evidences that can contribute to this discussion, the sociocultural approach was considered. Three different studies with fathers and mothers of children from 0 to 5 years old participated on this empiricist research thesis; including interviews, applying the tool on Father Style and an analysis of the father s participation on events and school related activities. The analysis of these data focuses the evaluation of both maternal and paternal levels of satisfaction about the father s engagement with their children, besides identifying which aspects show higher or lower frequency about day care, including the school s role. With regards the nursery school some interesting results were found: there is a kind of tendency about the level of the father s engagement. It seems to grow up when the children were younger and when the pedagogical aspects were not evaluated like relevant to them. The result found indicated that, even though there s a tendency of a father s bigger enrollment on entertainment activities with their children, they show themselves more and more available to the involvement with the others child s daily activities, like the physical care and school participation. The fathers that participated on the study are overall satisfied with their fatherhood exercises, but they considered that the mothers, not only stimulate their participation, but also wish for a bigger enrollment of their part. At the end of this study we re able to firm that, the participant families of this Brazilian portion on the city of Rio de Janeiro, tend to not to have the practice of the traditional fatherhood , however they still don t fully exercise the non-traditional fatherhood , exerting on its majority the fatherhood with changing manifestations . Este estudo parte dos pressupostos de que o desenvolvimento humano em todos os seus aspectos depende de um outro social , de que a família é o primeiro ambiente socializador da criança, e suas práticas são essenciais para que a criança se desenvolva. Pressupõe-se também que: os bebês compartilham características universais, interações são constitutivas do desenvolvimento, o investimento parental é característica da espécie, e o formato que cada um desses aspectos assume está diretamente relacionado ao contexto sociocultural. A partir desses pressupostos pode-se pensar nas mudanças nos papéis sociais exigidas pelo sistema econômico da sociedade urbana ocidental, em que a mulher cada vez mais tem trabalhos remunerados, necessitando muitas vezes deixar os filhos em creches e levando o pai a ganhar espaço em relação aos cuidados com os filhos, inclusive tendo uma participação nestas instituições. Desta forma, o presente trabalho pretendeu investigar os diversos aspectos do envolvimento paterno com seus filhos, inclusive a sua participação na creche,, buscando compreendê-lo através da abordagem sociocultural. Fizeram parte da pesquisa empírica nesta tese três estudos distintos com pais e mães de crianças de 0 a 5 anos, incluindo entrevistas, aplicação do instrumento Estilo Paterno e análise da participação paterna em eventos e atividades escolares, com o intuito de investigar o nível de satisfação paterno e materno com o envolvimento do pai com os filhos e identificando em que aspectos essa participação é mais ou menos freqüente nos cuidados cotidianos, incluindo a escola. Os resultados encontrados indicam que, embora haja uma tendência dos pais em um maior engajamento nas atividades voltadas para o entretenimento com os filhos, estes se mostram cada vez mais disponíveis para o engajamento nas demais atividades diárias. Na creche há uma tendência de maior participação paterna quanto menor a idade do filho e enquanto não prevalecem os aspectos pedagógicos. Os pais participantes de uma forma geral estão satisfeitos com o seu exercício da paternidade, mas consideram que as mães, não só incentivam a sua participação, como desejam um maior engajamento dos pais. Ao término deste estudo podemos afirmar que, as famílias participantes desta amostra brasileira na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, tendem a não ter como prática o exercício da paternidade tradicional , porém ainda não vivem plenamente o exercício da paternidade não tradicional .
