The propagation and energy coupling of intense laser beams in plasmas are critical issues in laser-driven inertial confinement fusion. Applying magnetic fields to such a setup has been evoked to enhance fuel confinement and heating, and mitigate laser energy losses. Here we report on experimental measurements demonstrating improved transmission and increased smoothing of a high-power laser beam propagating in an underdense magnetized plasma. We also measure enhanced backscattering, which our simulations show is due to hot electrons confinement, thus leading to reduced target preheating.

Colliding collisionless shocks appear in a great variety of astrophysical phenomena and are thought to be possible sources of particle acceleration in the Universe. We have previously investigated particle acceleration induced by single super-critical shocks (whose magnetosonic Mach number is higher than the critical value of 2.7) (Yao et al. 2021, 2022), as well as the collision of two sub-critical shocks (Fazzini et al. 2022). Here, we propose to make measurements of accelerated particles from interpenetrating super-critical shocks to observe the ''phase-locking effect'' (Fazzini et al. 2022) from such an event. This effect is predicted to significantly boost the energy spectrum of the energized ions compared to a single supercritical collisionless shock. We thus anticipate that the results obtained in the proposed experiment could have a significant impact on our understanding of one type of primary source (acceleration of thermal ions as opposed to secondary acceleration mechanisms of already energetic ions) of ion energization of particles in the Universe.

Colliding collisionless shocks appear in a great variety of astrophysical phenomena and are thought to be possible sources of particle acceleration in the Universe. To investigate the detailed dynamics of this phenomenon, we have performed a dedicated laboratory experiment. We have generated two counter-streaming subcritical collisionless magnetized shocks by irradiating two teflon (CF$_2$) targets with 100 J, 1 ns laser beams on the LULI2000 laser facility. The interaction region between the plasma flows was pre-filled with a low density background hydrogen plasma and initialized with an externally applied homogeneous magnetic field perpendicular to the shocks. We report here on measurements of the plasma density and temperature during the formation of the supercritical shocks, their transition to subcritical, and final interpenetration. We have also modeled the macroscopic evolution of the system via hydrodynamic simulations and the microphysics at play during the interaction via Particle-In-Cell simulations. The main goal was to understand what was the effect of the second shock on particle energization. We found that in the presence of two shocks the ambient ions reach energies around 1.5 times of the ones obtained with single shocks. Both the presence of the downstream zone of the second shock and of the downstream zone common for the two shocks play a role in the different energization: the characteristics of the perpendicular electric fields in the two areas allow, indeed, certain particles to keep being accelerated or to avoid being decelerated.

For several decades, the interest of the scientific community in aneutronic fusion reactions such as proton-Boron fusion has grown because of potential applications in different fields. Recently, many scientific teams in the world have worked experimentally on the possibility to trigger proton-Boron fusion using intense lasers demonstrating an important renewal of interest of this field. It is now possible to generate ultra-short high intensity laser pulses at high repetition rate. These pulses also have unique properties that can be leveraged to produce proton-Boron fusion reactions. In this article, we investigate the interaction of a high energy attosecond pulse with a solid proton-Boron target and the associated ion acceleration supported by numerical simulations. We demonstrate the efficiency of single-cycle attosecond pulses in comparison to multi-cycle attosecond pulses in ion acceleration and magnetic field generation. Using these results we also propose a path to proton-Boron fusion using high energy attosecond pulses.

Collisionless shocks are ubiquitous in the Universe and are held responsible for the production of non-thermal particles and high-energy radiation. In the absence of particle collisions in the system, theoretical works show that the interaction of an expanding plasma with a pre-existing electromagnetic structure (as in our case) is able to induce energy dissipation and allow for shock formation. Shock formation can alternatively take place when two plasmas interact, through microscopic instabilities inducing electromagnetic fields which are able in turn to mediate energy dissipation and shock formation. Using our platform where we couple a fast-expanding plasma induced by high-power lasers (JLF/Titan at LLNL and LULI2000) with high-strength magnetic fields, we have investigated the generation of magnetized collisionless shock and the associated particle energization. We have characterized the shock to be collisionless and super-critical. We report here on measurements of the plasma density, temperature, the electromagnetic field structures, and particle energization in the experiments, under various conditions of ambient plasma and B-field. We have also modeled the formation of the shocks using macroscopic hydrodynamic simulations and the associated particle acceleration using kinetic particle-in-cell simulations. As a companion paper of \citet{yao2020laboratory}, here we show additional results of the experiments and simulations, providing more information to reproduce them and demonstrating the robustness of our interpreted proton energization mechanism to be shock surfing acceleration.

The creation of an electron-positron pair in the collision of two real photons, namely the linear Breit-Wheeler process, has never been detected directly in the laboratory since its prediction in 1934 despite its fundamental importance in quantum electrodynamics and astrophysics. In the last few years, several experimental setup have been proposed to observe this process in the laboratory, relying either on thermal radiation, Bremsstrahlung, linear or multiphoton inverse Compton scattering photons sources created by lasers or by the mean of a lepton collider coupled with lasers. In these propositions, the influence of the photons' energy distribution on the total number of produced pairs has been taken into account with an analytical model only for two of these cases. We hereafter develop a general and original, semi-analytical model to estimate the influence of the photons energy distribution on the total number of pairs produced by the collision of two such photon beams, and give optimum energy parameters for some of the proposed experimental configurations. Our results shows that the production of optimum Bremsstrahlung and linear inverse Compton sources are, only from energy distribution considerations, already reachable in today's facilities. Despite its less interesting energy distribution features for the LBW pair production, the photon sources generated via multiphoton inverse Compton scattering by the propagation of a laser in a micro-channel can also be interesting, thank to the high collision luminosity that could eventually be reached by such configurations. These results then gives important insights for the design of experiments intended to detect linear Breit-Wheeler produced positrons in the laboratory for the first time.

Charged particles can be accelerated to high energies by collisionless shock waves in astrophysical environments, such as supernova remnants. By interacting with the magnetized ambient medium, these shocks can transfer energy to particles. Despite increasing efforts in the characterization of these shocks from satellite measurements at the Earth's bow shock and powerful numerical simulations, the underlying acceleration mechanism or a combination thereof is still widely debated. Here, we show that astrophysically relevant super-critical quasi-perpendicular magnetized collisionless shocks can be produced and characterized in the laboratory. We observe characteristics of super-criticality in the shock profile as well as the energization of protons picked up from the ambient gas to hundreds of keV. Kinetic simulations modelling the laboratory experiment identified shock surfing as the proton acceleration mechanism. Our observations not only provide the direct evidence of early stage ion energization by collisionless shocks, but they also highlight the role this particular mechanism plays in energizing ambient ions to feed further stages of acceleration. Furthermore, our results open the door to future laboratory experiments investigating the possible transition to other mechanisms, when increasing the magnetic field strength, or the effect induced shock front ripples could have on acceleration processes.

Using three-dimensional kinetic simulations, we examine the emission of collimated gamma-ray beams from structured laser-irradiated targets with a pre-filled cylindrical channel. The channel guides the incident laser pulse, enabling generation of a slowly evolving azimuthal plasma magnetic field that serves two key functions: to enhance laser-driven electron acceleration and to induce emission of gamma-rays by the energetic electrons. Our main finding is that the conversion efficiency of the laser energy into a beam of gamma-rays ($5^{\circ}$ opening angle) can be significantly increased without increasing the laser intensity by utilizing channels with an optimal density. The conversion efficiency into multi-MeV photons increases roughly linearly with the incident laser power $P$, as we increase $P$ from 1 PW to 4 PW while keeping the laser peak intensity fixed at $5 \times 10^{22}$ W/cm$^2$. This scaling is achieved by using an optimal range of plasma densities in the channel between 10 and $20 n_{cr}$, where $n_{cr}$ is the classical cutoff density for electromagnetic waves. The corresponding number of photons scales as $P^2$. One application that directly benefits from such a strong scaling is the pair production via two-photon collisions, with the number of generated pairs increasing as $P^4$ at fixed laser intensity., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures

A one-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation tracks a fast magnetosonic shock over time scales comparable to an inverse ion gyrofrequency. The magnetic pressure is comparable to the thermal pressure upstream. The shock propagates across a uniform background magnetic field with a pressure that equals the thermal pressure upstream at the angle 85$^\circ$ at a speed that is 1.5 times the fast magnetosonic speed in the electromagnetic limit. Electrostatic contributions to the wave dispersion increase its phase speed at large wave numbers, which leads to a convex dispersion curve. A fast magnetosonic precursor forms ahead of the shock with a phase speed that exceeds the fast magnetosonic speed by about $\sim 30 \%$. The pair beaming in the Breit-Wheeler (BW) process is investigated. We examine the effect of the BW differential cross section on pair angular and energy distributions. Stellar seismology reveals some interior properties of thousands of solar-type stars but the solar seismic sound speed stays puzzling since a decade as it disagrees with the Standard Solar Model (SSM) prediction. One of the explanations of this disagreement may be found in the treatment of the transport of radiation from the solar core to the surface. As the same framework is used for other stars, it is important to check precisely the reliability of the interacting cross sections of photons with each species in order to ensure the energy transport for temperature T > 2 - 10$^6$ K and density $\rho$ > 0.2 g/cm$^3$. In this paper, we propose a new technique to reach the domain of temperature and density found in the solar radiative interior. This technique called the Double Ablation Front (DAF) is based on a high conversion of the laser energy into X-rays thanks to moderated Z material irradiated by laser intensity between 1.5 $\times$ 10$^{15}$ W/cm$^2$ and 4 $\times$ 10$^{15}$ W/cm$^2$. This high conversion creates, in addition to the electronic front a second ablation front in the moderated Z material. Between the two fronts there is a plateau of density and temperature that we exploit to heat a sample of iron or of oxide. The first simulations realized with the hydrodynamic code CHIC show that this technique allows to reach conditions equivalent to half the radiative zone of the Sun with high stability both in time and space. We examine the possibility to measure both iron and oxygen absorption spectra.

Direct production of electron--positron pairs in two photon collisions, the Breit--Wheeler process, is one of the basic processes in the Universe. However, it has never been observed in laboratory because of absence of the intense gamma-ray sources. Laser induced synchrotron sources emission may open for the first time a way to observe this process. A feasibility of an experimental set--up using a MeV photon source is studied in this paper. We compare several $\gamma$--ray sources, estimate the expected number of electron--positron pairs and competing processes by using numerical simulations including quantum electrodynamic effects.
