To address the escalating global demand for food production, it is imperative to minimize agricultural losses caused by pests, accounting for up to 40 % of the substantial worldwide losses of 70 billion USD. While conventional pesticides raise environmental concerns, environmentally friendly alternatives like curcumin and carvacrol face low biological activity due to their low solubility and premature degradation in environmental conditions, that is, degradation can occur due to solar radiation, high temperature, etc., before the active ingredients can exert its full potential. This study introduces zein-based nanocarriers encapsulating curcumin and carvacrol, exhibiting favorable characteristics. Cytotoxicity tests indicate approximately 60% viability for fibroblast cell lines compared to 20% for keratinocyte cell lines. The nanoencapsulated compounds exhibit promising biological activity against soybean pests, mites, and caterpillars, without causing phytotoxicity. Tetranychus urticae mortality rates reach 77.1 ± 11.5 %, and nanoencapsulated ingredients demonstrate higher repellency (61.1 ± 8.8%) than emulsified ones (51.1 ± 5.4 %). Nanoencapsulated ingredients exhibit significantly higher mortality rates for Spodoptera cosmioides and Spodoptera eridania, underscoring the potential of nanoencapsulation in bolstering bioactivity against specific pests and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Abstract Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) isolates native to Maranhão (BtMA) that are highly toxic to Aedes aegypti larvae and seven standard subspecies of Bt were analyzed for genetic diversity using the rep-PRC technique with BOX, ERIC, REP, MB1, and GTG5 markers. The rep-PCR technique is considered an extremely reliable, reproducible, fast and highly discriminatory technique that may be used even among populations of the same species. These five markers revealed a total of 38 polymorphic DNA fragments for 30 BtMA isolates. Eight groups were obtained with the dendrogram generated through Pearson's correlation analysis, with four groups formed only with BtMA isolates and four comprised of isolates of BtMA and the standard subspecies toxic to dipterans and lepidopterans. Despite the high genetic diversity of BtMA, a low correlation between the collection site, gene content and mortality against A. aegypti larvae was evidenced. The clustering of the standard subspecies of Bt that were toxic against dipterans with BtMA isolates confirm the mosquitocidal action of the native isolates from Maranhão, and they can be used as an alternative for A. aegypti control and other insects of medical importance and for the control of agricultural pests.

RESUMO: O objetivo da pesquisa foi analisar a suscetibilidade de Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) a isolados de Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner e avaliar a compatibilidade dos isolados mais virulentos com inseticidas registrados para o controle de pragas do repolho. Foi avaliada a eficiência de 13 isolados, através de testes de patogenicidade e virulência (CL50 e TL50) em lagartas de segundo instar de P. xylostella. A compatibilidade entre os isolados e os ingredientes ativos foi realizada a partir da mistura do inseticida no meio de cultura, com posterior inoculação de uma alíquota da suspensão do micro-organismo, sendo avaliado o número de esporos / mL após sete dias de crescimento do entomopatógeno. Os isolados HD-1, HD-4, HD-11, HD-73 e T-07 foram os mais eficientes no controle de P. xylostella, responsáveis por ocasionar mortalidade total das lagartas, com CL50 variando entre 0,75 e 11,66 × 103 esporos / mL e TL50 entre 25,12 e 34,47 h. Os isolados HD-1 e HD-4 apresentaram interação neutra com o ingrediente ativo tiametoxam, sendo positiva para com o isolado T-07, com aumento significativo da esporulação. Os demais ingredientes ativos foram considerados tóxicos em relação ao desenvolvimento reprodutivo de B. thuringiensis. This study investigated the potential of Bacillus thuringiensis isolates obtained in the Cerrado region of the Brazilian state of Maranhão for the biological control of Aedes aegypti larvae. The isolates were obtained from soil samples and the identification of the B. thuringiensis colonies was based on morphological characteristics. Bioassays were run to assess the pathogenicity and toxicity of the different strains of the B. thuringiensis against third-instar larvae of A. aegypti. Protein profiles were obtained by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Polymerase chain reaction assays were used to detect the toxin genes found in the bacterial isolates. Overall, 12 (4.0%) of the 300 isolates obtained from 45 soil samples were found to present larvicidal activity, with the BtMA-104, BtMA-401 and BtMA-560 isolates causing 100% of mortality. The BtMA-401 isolate was the most virulent, with the lowest median lethal concentration (LC50) (0.004 × 107 spores/mL), followed by the Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis standard (0.32 × 107 spores/mL). The protein profiles of BtMA-25 and BtMA-401 isolates indicated the presence of molecular mass consistent with the presence of the proteins Cry4Aa, Cry11Aa and Cyt1, similar to the profile of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis IPS-82. Surprisingly, however, none of the cry and cyt genes analyzed were amplified in the isolate BtMA-401. The results of the present study revealed the larvicidal potential of B. thuringiensis isolates found in the soils of the Cerrado region from Maranhão, although further research will be necessary to better elucidate and describe other genes associated with the production of insecticidal toxins in these isolates. Helicoverpa armigera is a polyphagous pest sensitive to Cry1Ac protein from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). The susceptibility of the different larval instars of H. armigera to Cry1Ac protoxin showed a significant 45-fold reduction in late instars compared to early instars. A possible hypothesis is that gut surface proteins that bind to Cry1Ac differ in both instars, although higher Cry toxin degradation in late instars could also explain the observed differences in susceptibility. Here we compared the Cry1Ac-binding proteins from second and fifth instars by pull-down assays and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry analysis (LC-MS/MS). The data show differential protein interaction patterns of Cry1Ac in the two instars analyzed. Alkaline phosphatase, and other membrane proteins, such as prohibitin and an anion selective channel protein were identified only in the second instar, suggesting that these proteins may be involved in the higher toxicity of Cry1Ac in early instars of H. armigera. Eleven Cry1Ac binindg proteins were identified exclusively in late instar larvae, like different proteases such as trypsin-like protease, azurocidin-like proteinase, and carboxypeptidase. Different aminopeptidase N isofroms were identified in both instar larvae. We compared the Cry1Ac protoxin degradation using midgut juice from late and early instars, showing that the midgut juice from late instars is more efficient to degrade Cry1Ac protoxin than that of early instars, suggesting that increased proteolytic activity on the toxin could also explain the low Cry1Ac toxicity in late instars.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a toxicidade e a capacidade de ligação das proteínas Cry1Aa, Cry1Ab, Cry1Ac e Cry1Ca, de Bacillus thuringiensis, a receptores intestinais de Helicoverpa armigera. Realizou-se análise de ligação das proteínas ativadas às vesículas de membrana da microvilosidade apical (VMMA) do intestino médio deH. armigera, além de ensaios de competição heteróloga para avaliar sua capacidade de ligação. Cry1Ac destacou-se como a proteína mais tóxica, seguida por Cry1Ab e Cry1Aa. A proteína Cry1Ca não foi tóxica às lagartas e, portanto, não foi possível determinar os seus parâmetros de toxicidade CL50 e CL90. As proteínas Cry1Aa, Cry1Ab e Cry1Ac são capazes de se ligar a um mesmo receptor nas membranas intestinais, o que aumenta o risco do desenvolvimento de resistência cruzada. Portanto, a utilização conjunta dessas proteínas deve ser evitada.

We investigated the use of Bacillus thuringiensis isolated in the state of Amazonas, in Brazil, for the biological control of the dengue vector Aedes aegypti. From 25 soil samples collected in nine municipalities, 484 bacterial colonies were obtained, 57 (11.78%) of which were identified as B. thuringiensis. Six isolates, IBt-03, IBt-06, IBt-07, IBt-28, IBt-30, and BtAM-27 showed insecticidal activity, and only BtAM-27 presents the five genes investigated cry4Aa, cry4Ba, cry10Aa, cry11Aa, and cry11Ba. The IBt-07 and IBt- 28, with lower LC50 values, showed equal toxicity compared to the standards. The isolates of B. thuringiensis from Amazonas constitute potential new means of biological control for A. aegypti, because of their larvicidal activity and the possibility that they may also contain new combinations of toxins.

The sugarcane billbug, Sphenophorus levis (Coleoptera: Dryophthoridae), is an important pest of sugarcane crops in the São Paulo State, Brazil. Their larvae damage plants rhizome, causing losses of up to 30 t ha-1 year-1 of sugarcane. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of entomopathogenic nematodes and chemical insecticides against the sugarcane billbug and the scarab beetle Leucothyreus sp., three field trials were carried out in Brazil. For the first one, 10 treatments were considered: 1) thiametoxan (Actara 250WG) 500 g ha-1 of commercial product (c.p.); 2) thiametoxan 1.0 kg ha-1 c.p.; 3) thiametoxan 1.5 kg ha-1 c.p.; 4) Steinernema brazilense 108 infective juveniles (IJ) ha-1 + thiametoxan 250 g ha-1 c.p.; 5) S. brazilense (108 IJ ha-1) + thiametoxan 500 g ha-1 c.p.; 6) Heterorhabditis indica (108 IJ ha-1) + thiametoxan 250 g ha-1 c.p; 7) H. indica (108 IJ ha-1) + thiametoxan 500 g ha-1 c.p.; 8) S. brazilense (108 IJ ha-1); 9) H. indica (108 IJ ha-1); and 10) Control. The second one consisted of five treatments: 1) thiametoxan (Actara 250WG) 800 g ha-1 c.p.; 2) fipronil (Regente 800WG) 250 g ha-1 c.p.; 3) S. brazilense (108 IJ ha-1); 4) S. brazilense (108 IJ ha-1) + thiametoxan 200 g ha-1 c.p.; and 5) Control. In the third one, all treatments already mentioned for the second trial plus the mixture S. brazilense (108 IJ ha-1) + fipronil (Regente 800WG) 62.5 g ha-1 c.p. were considered. All treatments with the insecticides and nematodes provided higher sugarcane yield, when compared to their respective controls, which were most damaged by S. levis, but without statistical significance. S. brazilense was more efficient on controlling this pest, if compared to H. indica, but without statistical significance. S. brazilense provided a 50% control of Leucothyreus sp. larvae, meanwhile the best treatments against this scarab were the mixtures of this nematode with fipronil (78%) and thiametoxan (83%).

As brocas-das-cucurbitáceas Diaphania spp. são as principais pragas das cucurbitáceas, podendo ocasionar perdas de até 100% na produção. A fim de reduzir o uso de inseticidas, o controle biológico, aplicado com parasitoides do gênero Trichogramma, tem-se destacado. Objetivou-se avaliar a seletividade dos ingredientes ativos abamectina, tiacloprido e clorfenapir, para Trichogramma atopovirilia Oatman & Platner (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). Para isso, 20 fêmeas recém-emergidas de T. atopovirilla foram individualizadas, em tubos de vidro (2,5 cm de diâmetro x 8,5 cm de comprimento), e oferecidas cartelas com 30 ovos de Diaphania hyalinata (Linnaeus) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), previamente imersas por cinco segundos em calda química. Os ingredientes ativos abamectina, tiacloprido e clorfenapir não afetaram o parasitismo de T. atopovirilia. Clorfenapir reduziu a emergência. Abamectina e tiacloprido são os mais recomendados no manejo integrado de pragas, pois foram os que se mostraram mais seletivos a T. atopovirilia em ovos de D. hyalinata.

Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is the main insect pest of corn in the Americas. The objective was to evaluate the performance of Trichogramma atopovirilia (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) with influence of Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Bt) (Bacillaceae) (Dipel™ PM) to control of S. frugiperda. S. frugiperda eggs were immersed in solution of Bt and submitted to parasitism for 24 hours. The experiment was kept in acclimatized chamber at temperature of 25 ± 1ºC, relative humidity of 70 ± 10% and photophase of 14 hours. The parasitism, emergence, number of individuals per egg, sex ratio of offspring and longevity of females that parasitized were used as indicators of compatibility between the biological control agents. There was no difference in any biological characteristics of T. atopovirilia induced by Bt. The commercially B. thuringiensis formulated as Dipel™ PM applied on S. frugiperda eggs not affect T. atpovirilia.

Dois experimentos foram realizados para avaliar o efeito de duas formulações comerciais à base de Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuillemin e Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch., Sorokin sobre os parâmetros biológicos de Trichogramma atopovirilia Oatman & Platner, 1983. No primeiro experimento, cartelas com ovos de Spodoptera frugiperda, 1797 foram mergulhadas em suspensões preparadas com os produtos e, em seguida, colocadas à disposição dos parasitóides para oviposição, durante um período de 24 horas. No segundo, fêmeas do parasitóide foram alimentadas com uma solução mel e suspensão de conídios. Em ambos os experimentos as fêmeas mortas foram colocadas em uma câmara úmida para observar a esporulação dos fungos. Os tratamentos foram mantidos em câmara climatizada com temperatura de 25±1º C, umidade relativa de 70±10% e fotofase de 14 horas. Avaliou-se a longevidade e mortalidade dos adultos, índice de parasitismo, emergência do parasitóide, número de indivíduos por ovo e razão sexual dos descendentes. As formulações não interferiram nos parâmetros avaliados e não foi observada a esporulação do fungo no cadáver do parasitóide adulto. É possível inferir que T. atopovirilia e os fungos entomopatogênicos B. bassiana e M. anisopliae são compatíveis e podem ser empregados simultaneamente em programas de manejo integrado de S. frugiperda.Two bioassays were performed to evaluate the effect of two biopesticides based on Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuillemin and Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorokin on the biological parameters of Trichogramma atopovirilia Oatman & Platner, 1983. In the first one, displays with S. frugiperda, 1797 eggs were dropped into the biopesticide suspension and offered to the parasitoid females for 24 hours. In the second one, parasitoid females were fed with a suspension containing honey and biopesticide suspension. In both cases, after the parasitoid death they were mantained into a humid chamber to observe fungus sporulation. The experiments were maintained in a climatized chamber at 25±1º C, RH 70± 10%, and photophase of 14 hours. The longevity and adult mortality, total parasitism, progeny emergency, number of individuals per egg and sexual ratio were analyzed. The biopesticides did not affect the evaluated parameters and no fungus sporulation was observed in dead females. It is possible to assert that the entomopathogenic fungi B. bassiana and M. anisopliae can be used with T. atopovirilia in IPM S. frugiperda systems.

The entomopathogenic bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis is a control agent with toxic and environmental characteristics that allows the control of pest insects according to the Integrate Pest Management (IPM) precepts. In order to find new strains, potentially toxic to Sitophilus oryzae L. 1763 (Coleoptera: Curculinidae), 1.073 strains of B. thuringiensis from parts of Brazil were used. Genetic material was extracted with InstaGene Matrix kit, used for the amplification of sequences in Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and viewed in 1.5% agarose gel. The gene cry35Ba class was represented by 60 B. thuringiensis isolates (5.6%), which were then subjected to bioassays with S. oryzae larvae. Among the isolates studied, four caused more than 50% mortality in pathogenicity tests, and the isolates 544 and 622 were the most virulent, as determined by CL50 estimates. The four toxic isolates had spherical, bi-pyramidal and cuboid crystals, and a 44-kDa protein was found in sodium dodecyl sulphate - polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), which coded for the product of cry35Ba genes. These data demonstrate the potential of B. thuringiensis for the management of S. oryzae larvae.A bactéria entomopatogênica Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) é um agente de controle com características tóxicas e ambientais que permitem o controle de insetos-praga de acordo com as premissas do Manejo integrado de pragas (MIP). Com o objetivo de buscar novas linhagens potencialmente tóxicas para Sitophilus oryzae L. 1763 (Coleoptera: Curculinidae), caracterizaram-se molecularmente 1,073 isolados de B. thuringiensis de regiões do Brasil. O material genético foi extraído através do kit InstaGene Matrix, utilizado para a amplificação das seqüências através da técnica de Polymerase chain reaction PCR, sendo os resultados visualizados em gel de agarose 1,5%. A classe do gene cry35Ba foi representada por 60 isolados (5,6%) de Bt, os quais foram submetidos a bioensaio com larvas de S. oryzae. Quatro causaram mortalidade acima de 50% nos testes de patogenicidade e os isolados 544 e 622 foram os mais virulentos, conforme determinado pela estimativa da CL50. Nos quatro isolados que demonstraram toxicidade, foram detectados cristais esféricos, bipiramidais e cubóides, além de proteínas com 44 kDa, referentes aos genes cry35Ba por Sodium dodecil sulphate - polyacrilamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Estes dados demonstram o potencial de Bt no manejo de S. oryzae.

This work was carried out to study the effects of adult feeding and mating on the biological potential and parasitism of Trichogramma pretiosum and T. acacioi (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) to improve their use in biological control programs. Both species presented higher parasitism and longevity whenever adults were fed. Fed and unmated T. pretiosum females led to low parasitism whereas T. acacioi females did not present parasitism whatsoever. Egg viability of T. pretiosum was similar for fed and mated individuals, but T acacioi showed lower values for this parameter when unfed and without mating. Unmated females produced only males while mated ones had more than 60% female descendents for both Trichogramma species. Therefore, mated and fed female parasitoids should be released in crop systems to increase the biological control.Os efeitos do acasalamento e alimentação no potencial biológico e parasitismo de Trichogramma pretiosum e Trichogramma acacioi (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), foram estudados objetivando-se aprimorar o uso dessas espécies no controle biológico. O parasitismo e longevidade dos adultos de ambas as espécies foram maiores para fêmeas alimentadas e o parasitismo foi nulo e baixo para fêmeas acasaladas e não-alimentadas de T. acacioi e T. pretiosum, respectivamente. A viabilidade de ovos parasitados por T. pretiosum foi semelhante entre os tratamentos, mas para T. acacioi houve uma menor viabilidade do parasitismo realizado por fêmeas sem acasalamento e sem alimento. Descendentes de T. pretiosum e T. acacioi sem acasalamento produziram apenas machos, enquanto fêmeas acasaladas tiveram mais de 60% dos descentes fêmeas para as duas espécies de Trichogramma. Portanto, fêmeas acasaladas e alimentadas devem ser liberadas para o controle biológico.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as características biológicas dos parasitoides Trichogramma acacioi, T. atopovirilia, T. marandobai, T. demoraesi, T. exiguum (duas linhagens) e T. pretiosum (seis linhagens), criados em ovos de Trichoplusia ni. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com 15 repetições. As características biológicas avaliadas foram: parasitismo, viabilidade, razão sexual e número de indivíduos por ovo. A percentagem de parasitismo variou entre 7,66 e 53%, com maior valor observado para a linhagem Tspd de Trichogramma pretiosum, e o menor para a linhagem Trecife de T. pretiosum. Não houve diferença significativa dessa espécie quanto à viabilidade, que ficou acima de 85%. A razão sexual variou de 0,75 a 1, e a linhagem Tspd apresentou o menor valor. O número de parasitoides por ovo variou entre 2,39 para T. marandobai (linhagem Tm1) e 1,34 para T. exiguum (linhagem Te1). A espécie que apresentou o melhor desempenho em laboratório foi T. pretiosum (Tspd), com os maiores valores observados na percentagem de parasitismo e na emergência.The objective of this study was to evaluate the biological characteristics of the parasitoids Trichogramma acacioi, T. atopovirilia, T. marandobai, T. demoraesi, T. exiguum (two lines), and T. pretiosum (six lines), reared on eggs of Trichoplusia ni. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, with 15 replicates. The biological characteristics evaluated were: parasitism, viability, sexual ratio and number of individuals per egg. The parasitism percentage varied between 7.66 and 53%, whith highest value observed for Trichogramma pretiosum Tspd line, and the lowest for the T. pretiosum Trecife line. There was no significant difference for the viability, which remained higher than 85%. The sex ratio varied from 0.75 to 1, and Tspd line showed the lowest value. The number of individuals per egg varied between 2.39 for T. marandobai (Tm1 line) and 1.34 for T. exiguum (Te1 line). T. pretiosum (Tspd line) was the species with the best performance in laboratory with the highest values observed in parasitism and in viability.

The soil and other substrates such as mushroom compounds are the main sources of new Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) isolates for Integrated Pest Management programs. This study describes the relationship between chemical properties of the soil (pH, OM, P3+, K1+, Ca2+, Mg2+, H1++Al3+, B3+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Mn2+ and Zn2+) and the occurrence of Bt in Brazil. A total of 1,197 bacterial colonies were obtained, being 512 of them identified as Bt. The Bt index (iBt), which is the relation between Bt colonies and bacterial counts ranged from 0.18 to 0.86. The iBt may be expressed with the formula: iBt= -0.4 + 0.6Ca2+ + 0.07Cu2+ + 0.009Fe2+ - 0.53Mg2+ -0.12Mn2+ + 1.26Zn2+. A cluster of samples with fewer colonies and a high negative correlation (antagonism) between Mn2+ and Ca2+; Mg2+ and Ca2+; Mg2+ and Zn2+; Mn2+ and Zn2+ and a high positive correlation (synergism) between Mn2+ and Mg2+; Zn2+ and Ca2+ was observed. The relationship between these elements and their effect on the Bt presence are discussed.O solo e outros substratos, como restos vegetais são as principais fontes de obtenção de isolados de Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) para programas de Manejo Integrado de Pragas. Este estudo descreve uma investigação sobre a relação entre algumas propriedades químicas do solo (pH, MO, P3+, K1+, Ca2+, Mg2+, H1+ + Al3+, B3+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Mn2+ e Zn2+) e a ocorrência de Bt em solos do Brasil. Entre 1197 colônias bacterianas, 512 foram identificados como Bt. O índice de Bt (iBt), que é a relação entre o número de colônias de Bt e de colônias bacterianas, variou de 0,18 a 0,86. Os dados obtidos mostraram que o iBt pode ser representado pelo iBt da fórmula = -0,.4 + 0,6Ca2+ + 0,07Cu2+ + 0,009Fe2+ - 0,53Mg2+ -0,12Mn2+ + 1,26Zn2+. Observou-se o agrupamento das amostras com poucas colônias; uma correlação negativa elevada (antagonismo) entre Mn2+ e Ca2+, Mg2+ e Ca2+, Mg2+ e Zn2+, Mn2+ e Zn2+; uma correlação positiva elevada (sinergismo) entre Mn2+ e Mg2+, Zn2+ e Ca2+. A relação entre esses elementos e o efeito dessa relação na presença de Bt são discutidos.

The experiment was carried out at the Laboratory of Entomology of theCentro de Ciências Agrárias da Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (CCA-UFES) seeking to verify the susceptibility of Spodoptera frugiperda larvae from Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo to isolates of the entomopathogenic bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) and to observe possible differences between populations susceptibility. Thirty-one isolates were assayed in four bioassays on fall armyworm second instar larvae. Evaluations carried out seven days after treatment application showed that differences in populations susceptibility were observed only for the isolates 06 and 09 and the most promising isolates to both populations were 11, 25, 26, 27 e 229, because they caused 100% of mortality to fall armyworm larvae.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi a confecção das tabelas de vida de fertilidade para cinco linhagens de Trichogramma pretiosum, em ovos do hospedeiro Tuta absoluta, nas temperaturas constantes e alternadas, utilizando-se os dados das características biológicas e da capacidade de parasitismo. Foram utilizados setecentos ovos, divididos em quarenta por repetição, para a condução dos tratamentos. A duração média de cada geração (T) para as linhagens de T. pretiosum, nas temperaturas constantes, apresentou uma relação inversa com a elevação térmica com exceção da linhagem L2. A duração média de cada geração (T) foi menor, para todas as linhagens, na temperatura de 30°C. A capacidade máxima de aumento da população medida pela taxa líquida de reprodução (Ro) ocorreu na temperatura de 25°C, para as linhagens L2, L5 e L6. Com exceção da linhagem L4, todas as demais apresentaram uma relação direta da razão infinitesimal de aumento (rm) com a elevação da térmica. A variação intraespecífica foi devida às características do ambiente no qual as linhagens foram encontradas.The objective of this research was to construct a life table for five strains of Trichogramma pretiosum, in eggs of Tuta absoluta, for the constant and alternate temperatures, using the data of the biological characteristics and of the capacity of parasitism. The mean generation time (T), for in the constant temperatures, except for the strain L2, presented an inverse relationship with the thermal elevation for the other strains of T. pretiosum. The mean generation time (T) it was smaller, for all the strains, in the temperature of 30°C. The maximum capacity of increase of the population measured by Ro, happened at the temperature of 25°C, for the strains L2, L5 and L6. Except for the strain L4, all the others showed a direct relationship of the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) with the elevation of the temperature. It was due to environmental characteristics where the strains had been found.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a influência do desenvolvimento embrionário dos ovos do hospedeiro P. xylostella sobre fêmeas de Trichogramma exiguum, com diferentes idades. Para tanto, cinqüenta fêmeas recém-emergidas ou com 24, 48, 72, e 96horas após a emergência deste parasitóide foram divididas em cinco lotes. Para cada fêmea, foi oferecida uma cartela, contendo 30 ovos de P. xylostella com um, dois e três dias de idade. As maiores taxas de parasitismo foram observadas em ovos de três dias de desenvolvimento embrionário, independente da idade do parasitóide, com exceção daqueles com 72 horas de idade. A viabilidade não foi influenciada pela idade do parasitóide e nem pela fase embrionária do hospedeiro. A razão sexual foi semelhante nas três fases embrionárias do hospedeiro para fêmeas de T. exiguum com 24, 48 e 72 horas de idade. Ao avaliar os descendentes do parasitóide provenientes de ovos com três, dois e um dia de desenvolvimento embrionário, verificou-se que os maiores valores de longevidade foram obtidos quando foram usadas fêmeas recém-emergidas ou com 48 e 72 horas de vida,respectivamente. Estes resultados indicam a importância da idade do parasitóide, bem como o período de desenvolvimento embrionário do hospedeiro para manter a qualidade de T. exiguum em laboratório, em uma criação massal, e também nas liberações de campo para o controle biológico de pragas.The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of the embryonic development of eggs from the P. xylostella host on Trichogramma exiguum females of different ages. Fifty females – either just-emerged or 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours after emergence of this parasitoid were divided into five groups. Each female was offered a recipient with 30 P. xylostella eggs, which were 1-, 2- and 3-days-old. The greatest rates of parasitism were observed on eggs with 3 days of embryonic development, with exception of those 72-hours-old. Viability was not influenced by parasitoid age or host embryonic stage. Sex ratio was similar in all three embryonic host stages for T. exiguum females that were 24-, 48- and 72-hours-old. While evaluating parasitoid progeny obtained from eggs with 3, 2 and 1 days of embryonic development, it was verified that the highest values of longevity were obtained when the females used were just-emerged, or 48- and 72-hours-old, respectively. These resultsindicate the importance of the age of the parasitoid, as well as the host embryonic development period, in order to maintain quality of T. exiguum at laboratory conditions, in mass culture, as well as in field releases for biological pest control.

Visando estudar o efeito da bactéria entomopatogênica Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) sobre fêmeas adultas de Trichogramma pratissolii e sua progênie, este trabalho foi realizado com diferentes isolados de Bt e Bt kurstaki misturados ao alimento fornecido para o parasitóide antes de parasitar ovos de Anagasta kuehniella. Para tanto, suspensões de seis isolados de Bt E-3, E-10, E-15, E-16, E-19, E-20 e o Bt kurstaki foram misturados em gotícula de mel (1:1), como fonte de alimento e mel puro como testemunha, e, em seguida, foram oferecidos simultaneamente cartelas com ovos do hospedeiro para o parasitismo. Foram utilizadas 20 repetições por tratamento. O experimento foi mantido em câmara climatizada a 25 ± 1ºC, UR 70 ± 10% e fotofase de 14h. Foram avaliados os parasitismos diários, totais e acumulados; sobrevivência; emergência e razão sexual da progênie. Os tratamentos não afetaram o parasitismo, razão sexual e a longevidade, porém em alguns tratamentos (E-3, E-10, E-16 e E-20) foi observado efeito indireto sobre a emergência da progênie, o que implicaria a necessidade de mais liberações massais do parasitóide para alcançar os resultados esperados. Por outro lado, a aceleração do parasitismo verificada em todos os tratamentos sugere que adultos de T. pratissolii, quando submetidos à pressão de algum fator externo tendem a parasitar o mais rápido possível para assegurar a sobrevivência da progênie. Portanto, a combinação Bt + T. pratissolii pode favorecer a atuação do parasitóide em campo, principalmente em casos em que é necessária uma rápida redução dos níveis populacionais da praga.

O experimento foi mantido em BOD a 25 + 1ºC, umidade relativa de 70+ 10% e fotofase de 14 horas. Foram analisados a longevidade, os parasitismos diário, acumulado e total. Não houve influência dos tratamentos sobre a longevidade e todos ostratamentos em T. pratissolii e E-3, E-10, E-16 e E- 19 em T. pretiosum diminuíram o tempo necessário para os parasitóides atingirem 80% de parasitismo. Apesar dessa aceleração do parasitismo, o Bt não influenciou o total de ovos parasitados, mostrando-se como tática de controle que pode ser usada com Trichogramma em programas de MIP.The goal of this work was to detect the possible side-effectsprovoked by Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) strains on eggs parasitoids Thichogramma pratissolii and Trichogramma pretiosum. Six strains of Bt: E-3, E-10, E-15, E-16, E-19, and E-20 and Bt kurstaki were assayed in honey drop to stimulate the feeding of the parasitoids in each treatment and offered simultaneously displays with Anagasta kuehniella eggs. The experiment was maintained in a climatized chamber at 25+ 1ºC, RH 70+ 10%, and photophase of 14 hours. The longevity, the daily, the accumulated, and the total parasitism were observed. No treatments affected the longevity of both parasitoids. All treatments in T. pratissolii and E-3, E-10, E-16, and E-19 in T. pretiosum decreased the time necessary to reach 80% of parasitism. The lack of deleterious effects of Bt on these parasitoids suggests that these natural enemies can be used together in IPM programs.

The bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a promising control agent of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith). Besides the lethal effect on hosts, the entomopathogen may cause physiological alterations that hinder insects' feeding intake and reproduction. Larval and female pupa weight, oviposition and egg fecundity were determined in second instar S. frugiperda larvae infected with 39 Bt isolates in four bioassays. Sublethal effects were observed in the follow isolates: ESALQ 1.1, ESALQ 1.4, ESALQ 1.6, ESALQ 3.7, ESALQ 4.2 and ESALQ 5.2 (larval and female pupae weight); ESALQ 5.1 (larval weight); ESALQ 1.2 and ESALQ 3.7 (egg fecundity); ESALQ 3.7 (oviposition and egg fecundity); ESALQ 3.7 and ESALQ 5.2 (oviposition). Significant correlations were observed when parameters were analyzed together, except in the second bioassay (female pupal weight ´ oviposition, female pupal weight ´ egg fecundity and oviposition ´ egg fecundity). Some Bt isolates affected the biological parameters of S. frugiperda, mainly larval and female pupae weight, and in some instances these effects were passed on to further life cycle stages affecting oviposition and egg fecundity. Although sublethal effects are difficult to evaluate, mainly under field conditions, they should be considered when the activity of an entomopathogen is measured.

Relata-se a importância da bactéria entomopatogênica Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis para o controle de Aedes aegypti. São abordados a utilização e potencial de B. thuringiensis israelensis contra o mosquito vetor da dengue. Outros aspectos são discutidos como a evolução da resistência dos insetos em relação aos inseticidas químicos e as vantagens e desvantagens do controle microbiano como estratégia de controle. É dada ênfase à importância da utilização desta bactéria no Brasil como alternativa para resolver o problema em questão sem afetar o ambiente, o homem e outros vertebrados nas áreas de risco.The importance of the entomopathogenic bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis in the control of Aedes aegypti is presented. The use and potential of B. thuringiensis israelensis against the mosquito vector of dengue fever is described. Other aspects such as insect's resistance development against chemicals and advantages and constraints of using microbial control are discussed. Emphasis is given to the importance of the use of this bacterium in Brazil, which could contribute significantly to solving the mosquito problem without affecting the environment, humans and others invertebrate organisms in critical regions.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência, a estabilidade, a forma de aplicação e a compatibilidade do óleo de mamona com o fungo entomopatogênico Beauveria bassiana no controle da traça-das-crucíferas, Plutella xylostella. No primeiro experimento, foram avaliadas a eficiência, a estabilidade após 70 dias de armazenamento e a forma de aplicação do óleo de mamona. No segundo experimento, foi avaliada a compatibilidade do óleo de mamona com B. bassiana. A atividade inseticida do óleo de mamona é instável ao longo do tempo. O óleo de mamona é compatível com B. bassiana no controle de P. xylostella.

It was studied the parasitism capacity of Trichogramma acacioi on Anagasta kuehniella and Sitotroga cerealella eggs at different temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 ± 1°C). The parasitism of T. acacioi varied with temperature and host. The highest parasitism (³80%) were observed during the first days after emergence in both hosts, at all tested temperatures. The accumulated parasitism varied with both host and temperature, being higher on A. kuehniella at 20°C, what shows good parasitoid species adaptation to this temperature. Thus, we conclude that the best host and best temperature to be used at mass-rearing of T. acacioi is A. kuehniella and 20ºC, respectively. Moreover, this Trichogramma species has great potential to be used in field releases at regions where average temperature is around 20ºC.Foi estudada a capacidade de parasitismo de Trichogramma acacioi em ovos de Anagasta kuehniella e Sitotroga cerealella em diferentes temperaturas (15, 20, 25, 30 e 35 ± 1°C). O parasitismo de T. acacioi variou com a temperatura e hospedeiro. O maior parasitismo (³80%) foi observado durante os primeiros dias após a emergência, em ambos hospedeiros e em todas as temperaturas estudadas. O parasitismo acumulado variou nas diferentes temperaturas e hospedeiros, sendo maior em A. kuehniella a 20ºC, o que mostra uma boa adaptação da espécie do parasitóide a essa temperatura. Assim, concluímos que o melhor hospedeiro alternativo e melhor temperatura para serem usadas em criações massais de T. acacioi é a A. kuehniella e 20ºC, respectivamente. Ainda, esta espécie de Trichogramma tem grande potencial para ser usada em liberações de campo em regiões onde a temperatura média está em torno de 20ºC.

The effect of commercial formulation neem oil of the 0.3, 0.4 e 0.5% was evaluated, as it was applied on eggs of Helicoverpa zea with 1, 2, and 3 days old. The experiment was carried out in acclimatized chamber 25 ± 1º C, 70 ± 10% relative humidity and photophase of 14 hours, in the Entomology Laboratory of the CCA-UFES, in Alegre, ES. Eggs of H. zea were glued in paper cards and treated by submersion in the solutions and in the water (control) for five seconds. There are not differences in the eggs viability between the treatments (Tukey p = 0.05), thus demonstrating that there are no effects of the concentrations of the product on different ages of eggs.

Interactions of the parasitoids Palmistichus elaeisis Delvare & LaSalle and Trichospilus diatraeae Cherian & Margabandhu (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) with its alternative host Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) affect the success or failure of the mass production of these parasitoids for use in integrated pest management programs. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in the cellular defense and encapsulation ability of A. gemmatalis pupae against P. elaeisis or T. diatraeae in adult parasitoid densities of 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 or 13 parasitoids/pupae. We evaluated the total quantity of circulating hemocytes and the encapsulation rate versus density. Increasing parasitoid density reduced the total number of hemocytes in the hemolymph and the encapsulation rate by parasitized pupae. Furthermore, densities of P. elaeisis above 5 parasitoids/pupae caused higher reduction in total hemocyte numbers. The encapsulation rate fell with increasing parasitoid density. However, parasitic invasion by both species induced generally similar responses. The reduction in defensive capacity of A. gemmatalis is related to the adjustment of the density of these parasitoids to their development in this host. Thus, the role of the density of P. elaeisis or T. diatraeae by pupa is induced suppression of cellular defense and encapsulation of the host, even without them possesses a co-evolutionary history. Furthermore, these findings can predict the success of P. elaeisis and T. diatraeae in the control of insect pests through the use of immunology as a tool for evaluation of natural enemies.

O objetivo deste trabalho é comunicar a ocorrência da curuquerê-da-couve, Ascia monuste orseis (Godart) (Lepidoptera: Pieridae), causando danos a Crataeva tapia (L.) (tapiá). Mudas de tapiá, com cerca de 25cm de altura, foram severamente atacadas por lagartas da curuquerê-da-couve, que causaram 100% de desfolha, além de alimentarem-se da epiderme do caule em estrutura primária (casca), o que causou a morte de todas as mudas.This research is aimed at comunicating the occurrence of cabbage caterpillar Ascia monuste orseis (Godart) (Lepidoptera: Pieridae), causing damage to Crataeva tapia (L.) ("tapiá"). It was verified 100% of desfoliation indicating that these larvae caused severe damaged to "tapiá". Besides this, they consumed epidermis causing death of all seedlings.

ABSTRACT This study investigated the potential of Bacillus thuringiensis isolates obtained in the Cerrado region of the Brazilian state of Maranhão for the biological control of Aedes aegypti larvae. The isolates were obtained from soil samples and the identification of the B. thuringiensis colonies was based on morphological characteristics. Bioassays were run to assess the pathogenicity and toxicity of the different strains of the B. thuringiensis against third-instar larvae of A. aegypti. Protein profiles were obtained by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Polymerase chain reaction assays were used to detect the toxin genes found in the bacterial isolates. Overall, 12 (4.0%) of the 300 isolates obtained from 45 soil samples were found to present larvicidal activity, with the BtMA-104, BtMA-401 and BtMA-560 isolates causing 100% of mortality. The BtMA-401 isolate was the most virulent, with the lowest median lethal concentration (LC50) (0.004 × 107 spores/mL), followed by the Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis standard (0.32 × 107 spores/mL). The protein profiles of BtMA-25 and BtMA-401 isolates indicated the presence of molecular mass consistent with the presence of the proteins Cry4Aa, Cry11Aa and Cyt1, similar to the profile of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis IPS-82. Surprisingly, however, none of the cry and cyt genes analyzed were amplified in the isolate BtMA-401. The results of the present study revealed the larvicidal potential of B. thuringiensis isolates found in the soils of the Cerrado region from Maranhão, although further research will be necessary to better elucidate and describe other genes associated with the production of insecticidal toxins in these isolates.
