Abstract

The containment of unwanted electromagnetic radiation and interference is a relevant topic for the system design of any electrical system, and even more for data centers. In this context, the racks hosting piles of servers are one of the main sources of electromagnetic noise. Such unwanted radiation can couple and interact with other computing machines, but also with sensitive electronic devices needed for the management and/or maintenance of the center. The aim of this work is to show how the proper stack-up of the trays in the rack gives rise to a decrease in the unwanted physical electromagnetic radiation. Based on the application of the spherical wave expansion technique, a multi-objective genetic algorithm is developed to evaluate the optimal set of rack configurations that allows for a reduction of the external radiated field. The algorithm and the implemented constraints are described, and the results are discussed.

Abstract

Background: The Covid-19 pandemic may have a deleterious impact on patients with autoimmune systemic diseases (ASD) due to their deep immune-system alterations. Objective: This study aims to investigate the prevalence of symptomatic Covid-19 and its correlations with both organ involvement and ongoing treatments in a large series of Italian ASD patients during the first wave of pandemic. Methods: Our multicenter telephone 6-week survey included 3,029 unselected ASD patients enrolled at 36 tertiary referral centers of northern, central, and southern Italian macro-areas with different diffusion of the pandemic. Symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection was classified as definite Covid-19 (presence of symptoms plus positive oral/nasopharyngeal swabs) or highly suspected Covid-19 (highly suggestive symptoms, in the absence of a swab testing). Results: A significantly higher prevalence of definite plus highly suspected Covid-19 compared to the Italian general population was detected in the whole ASD series (p=.000), as well as in patients from the three macro-areas (p=.000 in all). Statistically higher prevalence of Covid-19 was also found in connective tissue diseases compared to chronic arthritis subgroup (p=.000) and in ASD patients with pre-existing interstitial lung involvement (p=.000). Patients treated with either conventional disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and/or biological DMARDs showed a significantly lower prevalence of Covid-19 (p=.000 in both). Finally, scleroderma patients undergoing low-dose aspirin showed a significantly lower rate of Covid-19 compared to those without (p=0.003). Conclusion: The higher prevalence of Covid-19 in ASD patients, along with the significant correlations with important clinical features and therapeutic regimens, suggests the need to develop targeted prevention/management strategies during the current pandemic wave.

Abstract

An iterative optimization for decoupling capacitor placement on a power delivery network (PDN) is presented based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The ANN is first trained by an appropriate set of results obtained by a commercial simulator. Once the ANN is ready, it is used within an iterative GA process to place a minimum number of decoupling capacitors for minimizing the differences between the input impedance at one or more location, and the required target impedance. The combined GA&ndash, ANN process is shown to effectively provide results consistent with those obtained by a longer optimization based on commercial simulators. With the new approach the accuracy of the results remains at the same level, but the computational time is reduced by at least 30 times. Two test cases have been considered for validating the proposed approach, with the second one also being compared by experimental measurements.

Abstract

The current demand in Power Distribution Network (PDN) design is characterized by the accurate placement of decoupling capacitors and the minimization of their number aimed at cost saving. The paper proposes an optimization algorithm for accordingly placing decoupling capacitors one-by-one and iteratively evaluating the cost function of each PDN design solution. This allows the designer to identify the minimum number of decaps whenever the input impedance satisfies the target impedance requirements. The algorithm is based on the Genetic Algorithm accordingly adapted for the specific application of PDN design. It may involve the evaluation of the input impedance at multiple locations, representing either multiple ICs, as well as multiple power input areas/pins of the same IC. The validation of the developed optimization algorithm is carried out by applying it to a manufactured PCB and by employing typical (low inductance) decaps for PDN design. The optimization process led to a decap configuration that effectively takes into account the decap value, the parasitics inductance, and the decap location. An accurate experimental test further validates the optimized PDN.

Abstract

The present work develops a unitary finite difference time domain (FDTD) formulation to take into account the unavoidable coupling, of resistive nature, among the N ports of a general termination network at the ends of lossy and externally excited multiconductor transmission lines. It completes the contribution of a previous paper where a FDTD scheme has been developed for the same coupling but for lossless and only internally excited lines. Abstract

The ever growing complexity of electronic circuits placed at the ends of multiconductor transmission line models requires also taking into account the electrical coupling among all ports of their equivalent termination networks. This work develops an explicit finite difference time-domain scheme that takes into account a lumped resistive coupling among the N ports of a general termination network. The developed vector time-domain equations are validated comparing the results with those obtained by a commercial tool.

Abstract

Decoupling capacitors are fundamental keys for the reduction of transient noise in power delivery networks, their arrangement and values are crucial for reaching this goal. This work deals with the optimization of the decoupling capacitors of a power delivery network by using a nature-inspired algorithm. In particular, the capacitance value and the location of three decoupling capacitors are optimized in order to obtain an input impedance below a specific mask, by using a nature-inspired algorithm, the genetic one, in combination with two electromagnetic solvers used to compute the objective function. An experimental board is designed and manufactured, measurements are performed to validate the numerical results.

Abstract

This paper describes the job carried out for the developing of an analytical model that is able to calculates the input impedance of a power distribution network (PDN) by taking into account modeling of package and PCB. PDNs are usually already widely available, the work focuses on the chip and interposer PDN. The model has been used by an optimizer to determine the optimum position of the decoupling capacitors to be connected to the PDN.

Abstract

The paper applies the combined SI-PI co-simulation to on chip high speed interconnects. A complete model of chip and interposer PDN is developed and, together to a lumped model of the PCB and package PDN, it is employed to supply I/O drivers for HBM traces laid out on silicon interposer. A comprehensive analysis is carried out highlighting the impact of the decoupling capacitor placement and their corresponding parasitic inductance on the supply voltage ripple and on the output eye diagram at the signal receivers.

Abstract

To reduce the noise created by a power delivery network, the number, the value of decoupling capacitors and their arrangement on the board are critical to reaching this goal. This work deals with specific improvements, implemented on a genetic algorithm, which used for the optimization of the decoupling capacitors in order to obtain the frequency spectrum of the input impedance in different positions on the network, below previously defined values. Measurements are performed on a specifically manufactured board in order to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and the optimization results obtained for a specific example board.

Abstract

The high level of integration in digital electronic chips based on three-dimensional (3D) technology requires accurate modelling of the vertical interconnects (the through silicon vias – TSVs). An accurate prediction of the signal propagation and crosstalk of the TSVs cannot be based on the single via since the interaction among adjacent TSVs in a high density array cannot be neglected. An algorithm is proposed that extends the approach for modelling a TSV array with a complete analytical evaluation of the final multiport scattering parameter matrix, thus making the electromagnetic modelling of such structures more efficient without relying on commercial circuit solvers. The proposed method requires much less processing time with respect to commercial solvers with a comparable accuracy.

Abstract

The paper proposes an optimization procedure for the design of a common mode filter based on removable electromagnetic bandgap structures. Our algorithm exploits auxiliary response surface approximation models. As demonstrated, it allows us to quickly refine the preliminary analytical design and precisely achieve the required filtering frequency and to maximize the filter bandwidth at the level of a full-wave EM simulation model of the structure of interest.
