13 páginas, ilustraciones y tablas estadísticas., Hygroscopic salts have been detected in soils in the northern latitudes of Mars, and widespread chloride-bearing evaporitic deposits have been detected in the southern highlands. The deliquescence of hygroscopic minerals such as chloride salts could provide a local and transient source of liquid water that would be available for microorganisms on the surface. This is known to occur in the Atacama Desert, where massive halite evaporites have become a habitat for photosynthetic and heterotrophic microorganisms that take advantage of the deliquescence of the salt at certain relative humidity (RH) levels. We modeled the climate conditions (RH and temperature) in a region on Mars with chloride-bearing evaporites, and modeled the evolution of the water activity (aw) of the deliquescence solutions of three possible chloride salts (sodium chloride, calcium chloride, and magnesium chloride) as a function of temperature. We also studied the water absorption properties of the same salts as a function of RH. Our climate model results show that the RH in the region with chloride-bearing deposits on Mars often reaches the deliquescence points of all three salts, and the temperature reaches levels above their eutectic points seasonally, in the course of a martian year. The aw of the deliquescence solutions increases with decreasing temperature due mainly to the precipitation of unstable phases, which removes ions from the solution. The deliquescence of sodium chloride results in transient solutions with aw compatible with growth of terrestrial microorganisms down to 252 K, whereas for calcium chloride and magnesium chloride it results in solutions with aw below the known limits for growth at all temperatures. The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) has recently concluded a set of engineering flights for Observatory performance evaluation. These in-flight opportunities are viewed as a first comprehensive assessment of the Observatory's performance and are used to guide future development activities, as well as to identify additional Observatory upgrades. Pointing stability was evaluated, including the image motion due to rigid-body and flexible-body telescope modes as well as possible aero-optical image motion. We report on recent improvements in pointing stability by using an active mass damper system installed on the telescope. Measurements and characterization of the shear layer and cavity seeing, as well as image quality evaluation as a function of wavelength have also been performed. Additional tests targeted basic Observatory capabilities and requirements, including pointing accuracy, chopper evaluation and imager sensitivity. The success of the high resolution nightglow studies conducted with the Keck telescopes on Mauna Kea and the Very Large Telescopes in Chile led to the design of the Compact Echelle Spectrograph for Aeronomical Research (CESAR). This is an echelle spectrograph with grating post-dispersion that will be dedicated to nightglow studies at high spectral resolution (R ~ 20000) between 300-1000 nm, and that will be easily deployable at different sites. The development of CESAR is conducted by SRI International, and INO is involved in the optical design and integration of the spectrograph camera, whose all-spherical form is based on the camera of the HIRES spectrograph at the Keck I telescope. The detailed optical design is used to calculate the position of the spectral elements on the detector, predict their image quality, and estimate the level of stray light. This paper presents the methodology used in these analyses.

[1] Pressure waves in the Martian atmosphere could so far be observed only in the presence of clouds. Thanks to the Mars Global Surveyor/Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MGS/MOLA), a direct observation is now possible, with the method presented here. Many more events are thus potentially observable. We compare altimetry measurements from MGS/MOLA and spectral observations from ISM, the infrared spectrometer aboard the Phobos-2 spacecraft, to infer pressure variations in the Martian atmosphere. We identify variations of pressure above Martian volcanoes and we observe lee vortices of wavelength ∼200–250 km and amplitude ∼0.05 mbar in two different occasions. The application of this technique should constrain Martian meteorology with data from future imaging spectrometers.
