11. Exploring Resources for Responsiveness to Student Thinking in Practice

Abstract

Supporting teachers' attention and responsiveness to the substance of student thinking is increasingly emphasized across disciplines. Yet studies demonstrate how such responsiveness, in practice, is highly contextualized and often fleeting. This study conceptualizes and examines what functioned as "resources for responsiveness" within and across nine sustained cases of responsiveness in three science teachers' inquiry-oriented classrooms. Analyses demonstrated how a diverse range of personal, social, and material/structural resources facilitated teachers' responsiveness, with some commonalities but also much variation across teachers. These findings contribute to the field's understanding of what may support teachers' attention and responsiveness to student thinking and suggest the importance of (a) responsiveness in the design and facilitation of professional learning and (b) increased attention to teachers' affect.

12. Children's Emerging Understanding of Anonymity Does Not Predict Reputation Enhancing Generosity

Abstract

Young children tend to behave more generously when their actions are identified than when they are anonymous, yet we know little about the cognitive foundations required for anonymity to impact generosity. In three studies we examined Canadian children's understanding of anonymity and its impact on sharing in anonymous and identified contexts. Study 1 assessed whether 3- and 5-year-old children (N = 100, 51 female) understood anonymous and identified sharing, and whether age-related changes in their understanding corresponded to sharing behavior. We found that understanding of anonymity improved with age, but anonymity did not influence sharing. Study 2 assessed 5-year-old children's (N = 60, 30 female) judgments about how others would share in these contexts and their preferences for receiving donations from identified or anonymous donors. We found that children preferred to receive from identified donors and believed that identified donors were more generous. Study 3 assessed whether 5-year-old children (N = 60, 30 female) preferred to share as anonymous or identified donors themselves, and whether their choice influenced sharing behavior. We found that while participants preferred to share as identified donors, this choice did not influence sharing. Overall, our findings suggest that although 5-year-old Canadian children have a robust understanding of the implications of anonymous and identified sharing, this understanding is not sufficient to motivate increased generosity.

Abstract

Here we report two antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), HG2 and HG4 identified from a rumen microbiome metagenomic dataset, with activity against multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, especially methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains, a major hospital and community-acquired pathogen. We employed the classifier model design to analyse, visualise, and interpret AMP activities. This approach allowed in silico discrimination of promising lead AMP candidates for experimental evaluation. The lead AMPs, HG2 and HG4, are fast-acting and show anti-biofilm and anti-inflammatory activities in vitro and demonstrated little toxicity to human primary cell lines. The peptides were effective in vivo within a Galleria mellonella model of MRSA USA300 infection. In terms of mechanism of action, HG2 and HG4 appear to interact with the cytoplasmic membrane of target cells and may inhibit other cellular processes, whilst preferentially binding to bacterial lipids over human cell lipids. Therefore, these AMPs may offer additional therapeutic templates for MDR bacterial infections.

16. Launching Networked PLCs: Footholds into Creating and Improving Knowledge of Ambitious and Equitable Teaching Practices in an RPP

Abstract

One of the major challenges in educational reform is supporting teachers and the profession in the continual improvement of instruction. Research-practice partnerships and particularly networked improvement communities are well-suited for such knowledge-building work. This article examines how a networked improvement community with eight school-based professional learning communities--comprised of secondary science teachers, science and emergent bilingual coaches, and researchers--launched into improvement work within schools and across the district. We used data from professional learning communities to analyze pathways into improvement work and reflective data to understand practitioners' perspectives. We describe three improvement launch patterns: (1) Local Practice Development, (2) Spread and Local Adaptation, and (3) Integrating New Practices. We raise questions about what is lost and gained in the transfer of tools and practices across schools and theorize about how research-practice partnerships find footholds into joint improvement work.

20. Environmental drivers of earthen heritage deterioration in dryland regions

Abstract

Earthen sites form a key part of our heritage: providing us with evidence for past civilisations, acting as a focal point for community identity and forming aesthetically pleasing buildings and structures. These sites are found on every continent but are concentrated in dryland regions, such as across northwest China and central Asia. Due to the low durability of earthen materials, many earthen heritage sites exposed to harsh dryland environments are experiencing extensive deterioration. If we are to pass on these sites to future generations, we need to understand how earthen heritage sites are impacted by environmental drivers of deterioration and how the risk of deterioration could be minimised. To address this challenge, this thesis determines the likely impacts of the main environmental drivers of earthen heritage deterioration under current and future conditions in dryland regions. The research presented in this thesis examines the impact of wind and rain as drivers of deterioration at Suoyang Ancient City. Suoyang is an archaeological city built out of rammed earth in the Han (206 BC–220 AD) and Tang (618 – 907 AD) dynasties and is located in Gansu Province, northwest China, on the ancient Silk Road. It exhibits a range of deterioration features from the detachment of surface material to wall slumps and collapses. In 2015, an experimental area was established at the site, which includes several test walls. This thesis uses a combined fieldwork-modelling approach. A controlled field experiment was used to investigate the deteriorative impact of key individual environmental processes on earthen structures. Geomorphological signatures were used to assess the relative importance of wind and rain as drivers of deterioration. These field results were used to develop and parameterise the Vegetation and Sediment TrAnsport model for Heritage Deterioration (ViSTA-HD), a cellular automaton model that spatially resolves the risk of environmental driven deterioration across earthen heritage wall faces. ViSTAHD was used to test the impact of future climatic and conservation scenarios on the risk of earthen heritage deterioration. Findings showed that even though individual wind events are of low magnitude, their high frequency occurrence results in a significant cumulative impact of wind-driven deterioration under both current and potential future conditions. Increasing natural vegetation cover was found to minimise the risk of deterioration under a range of climatic scenarios. Given the similarities in material properties, history and location of Suoyang to other earthen heritage sites in Northwest China and central Asia, findings in this thesis can be applied to many other earthen sites in these regions.

Abstract

BackgroundProgressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative disease without approved therapies, and therapeutics are often tried off-label in the hope of slowing disease progression. Results from these experiences are seldom shared, which limits evidence-based knowledge to guide future treatment decisions.ObjectivesTo describe an open-label experience, including safety/tolerability, and longitudinal changes in biomarkers of disease progression in PSP-Richardson's syndrome (PSP-RS) patients treated with either salsalate or young plasma and compare to natural history data from previous multicenter studies.MethodsFor 6 months, 10 PSP-RS patients received daily salsalate 2,250 mg, and 5 patients received monthly infusions of four units of young plasma. Every 3 months, clinical severity was assessed with the Progressive Supranuclear Palsy Rating Scale (PSPRS), and MRI was obtained for volumetric measurement of midbrain. A range of exploratory biomarkers, including cerebrospinal fluid levels of neurofilament light chain, were collected at baseline and 6 months. Interventional data were compared to historical PSP-RS patients from the davunetide clinical trial and the 4-Repeat Tauopathy Neuroimaging Initiative.ResultsSalsalate and young plasma were safe and well tolerated. PSPRS change from baseline (mean ± standard deviation [SD]) was similar in salsalate (+5.6 ± 9.6), young plasma (+5.0 ± 7.1), and historical controls (+5.6 ± 7.1), and change in midbrain volume (cm3 ± SD) did not differ between salsalate (-0.07 ± 0.03), young plasma (-0.06 ± 0.03), and historical controls (-0.06 ± 0.04). No differences were observed between groups on any exploratory endpoint.ConclusionsNeither salsalate nor young plasma had a detectable effect on disease progression in PSP-RS. Focused open-label clinical trials incorporating historical clinical, neuropsychological, fluid, and imaging biomarkers provide useful preliminary data about the promise of novel PSP-directed therapies.

26. Teacher Sense-Making about Being Responsive to Students' Science Ideas: A Case Study

Abstract

Being responsive to the substance of students' disciplinary thinking is central to current visions of reformed science teaching. Studies of classroom practice, however, show that this kind of teaching is relatively rare. In this paper, we use data from one cohort of university physics Learning Assistants (LAs) to illustrate what it looks like for teachers to sense-make about being responsive to student thinking. We draw on the theoretical lens of sense-making--including Spillane et al.'s (2002) notion that teachers need opportunities to sense-make not only about the substance of new instructional approaches but also their own relationship to these approaches--to unpack the central questions that LAs asked about being responsive. We give evidence from course assignments that these LAs' extended sense-making was productive both (1) for their attention to the substance of student thinking and (2) to their identification with responsiveness as a central facet of good instruction, Our case study highlights the tensions that teachers may experience as they enter this instructional space and what "resolution" of such tensions can look like.

40. Reframing the Responsiveness Challenge: A Framing-Anchored Explanatory Framework to Account for Irregularity in Novice Teachers' Attention and Responsiveness to Student Thinking

Abstract

Mathematics and science education researchers focused on teacher education emphasize attention and responsiveness to student thinking as central to effective classroom practice. Being responsive to student thinking involves attending to the substance of students' ideas--the meaning students are making--and pursuing that thinking, adjusting the flow of instruction as needed. Yet, attention and responsiveness to student thinking is irregular and generally rare among novice teachers. In this theoretical paper, we argue that the irregularity of attention and responsiveness to student thinking, including variability within individual teachers' practice, can be explained by a framework grounded in teachers' localized "framings" of their classroom activity--their sense of "what is it that's going on here." Using analyses of classroom episodes across contexts and timescales to illustrate our claims, we demonstrate how a framing-anchored framework can coordinate and improve upon three common explanations for the irregularity of novice teachers' attention and responsiveness to student thinking: underdeveloped skills and/or knowledge for attending and responding, "transmissionist" beliefs about learning, and institutional constraints (and teachers' perceptions thereof). Building on this argument, we suggest that teacher educators can work with novice teachers' framings of their classroom activities as a generative anchor for supporting attention and responsiveness to student thinking in classroom settings.
