We study the propagation of both low- and high-amplitude ring-shaped sound waves in a 2D square lattice of acoustic waveguides with Helmholtz resonators. We show that the inclusion of the Helmholtz resonators suppresses the inherent anisotropy of the system in the low frequency regime allowing for radially symmetric solutions. By employing the electroacoustic analogue approach and asymptotic methods we derive an effective cylindrical Korteweg de Vries (cKdV) equation. Low-amplitude waveforms are self-similar structures of the Airy function profile, while high-amplitude ones are of the form of cylindrical solitons. Our analytical predictions are corroborated by results of direct numerical simulations, with a very good agreement between the two.

We report on a direct mapping of acoustic slender waveguides to the one dimensional trimer Su- Schrieffer-Heeger model, with neither chiral nor mirror symmetry. Importantly, we can choose to perform this mapping for either the acoustic velocity or pressure. We demonstrate that, for finite systems, this choice is necessarily linked to the boundary conditions. It allows for the unveiling of the edge states of the acoustic system through an edge state phase diagram. An experimental realization of our setup in the audible regime corroborates our theoretical predictions.

Mirror-symmetric acoustic metascreens producing perfect absorption independently of the incidence side are theoretically and experimentally reported in this work. The mirror-symmetric resonant building blocks of the metascreen support symmetric and antisymmetric resonances that can be tuned to be at the same frequency (degenerate resonances). The geometry of the building blocks is optimized to critically couple both the symmetric and the antisymmetric resonances at the same frequency allowing perfect absorption of sound from both sides of the metascreen. A hybrid analytical model based on the transfer matrix method and the modal decomposition of the exterior acoustic field is developed to analyze the scattering properties of the metascreen. The resulting geometry is 3D printed and experimentally tested in an impedance tube. Experimental results agree well with the theoretical predictions proving the efficiency of these metascreens for the perfect absorption of sound in the ventilation problems.

We investigate the dynamical properties of a strongly disordered micropolar lattice made up of cubic block units. This phononic lattice model supports both transverse and rotational degrees of freedom hence its disordered variant posses an interesting problem as it can be used to model physically important systems like beam-like microstructures. Different kinds of single site excitations (momentum or displacement) on the two degrees of freedom are found to lead to different energy transport both superdiffusive and subdiffusive. We show that the energy spreading is facilitated both by the low frequency extended waves and a set of high frequency modes located at the edge of the upper branch of the periodic case for any initial condition. However, the second moment of the energy distribution strongly depends on the initial condition and it is slower than the underlying one dimensional harmonic lattice (with one degree of freedom). Finally, a limiting case of the micropolar lattice is studied where Anderson localization is found to persist and no energy spreading takes place.

We report the experimental design of a 1D stealth acoustic material, namely a material that suppresses the acoustic scattering for a given set of incident wave vectors. The material consists of multiple scatterers, rigid diaphragms, located in an air-filled acoustic waveguide. The position of the scatterers has been chosen such that in the Born approximation a suppression of the scattering for a broad range of frequencies is achieved and thus a broadband transparency. Experimental results are found in excellent agreement with the theory despite the presence of losses and the finite size of the material, features that are not captured in the theory. This robustness as well as the generality of the results motivates realistic potential applications for the design of transparent materials in acoustics and other fields of wave physics.

We numerically investigate the dynamics of an one-dimensional disordered lattice using the Hertzian model, describing a granular chain, and the $\alpha+\beta $ Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou model (FPUT). The most profound difference between the two systems is the discontinuous nonlinearity of the granular chain appearing whenever neighboring particles are detached. We therefore sought to unravel the role of these discontinuities in the destruction of Anderson localization and their influence on the system's chaotic dynamics. Our results show that both models exhibit an energy range where localization coexists with chaos. However, the discontinuous nonlinearity is found to be capable of triggering energy spreading of initially localized modes, at lower energies than the FPUT model. A transition from Anderson localization to chaotic dynamics and energy equipartition is found for the granular chain and is associated with the"propagation" of the discontinuous nonlinearity in the chain. On the contrary, the FPUT chain exhibits an alternate behavior between localized and delocalized chaotic behavior which is strongly dependent on the initial energy of excitation.

We investigate the spectral properties of a class of hard-wall bounded systems, described by potentials exhibiting domain-wise different local symmetries. Tuning the distance of the domains with locally symmetric potential from the hard wall boundaries leads to extrema of the eigenenergies. The underlying wavefunction becomes then an eigenstate of the local symmetry transform in each of the domains of local symmetry. These extrema accumulate towards eigenenergies which do not depend on the position of the potentials inside the walls. They correspond to perfect transmission resonances of the associated scattering setup, obtained by removing the hard walls. We argue that this property characterizes the duality between scattering and bounded systems in the presence of local symmetries. Our findings are illustrated at hand of a numerical example with a potential consisting of two domains of local symmetry, each one comprised of Dirac ? barriers., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Utilizing the effect of losses, we show that symmetric 3-port devices exhibit coherent perfect absorption of waves and we provide the corresponding conditions on the reflection and transmission coefficients. Infinite combinations of asymmetric inputs with different amplitudes and phase at each port as well as a completely symmetric input, are found to be perfectly absorbed. To illustrate the above we study an acoustic 3-port network operating in a subwavelength frequency both theoretically and experimentally. In addition we show how the output from a 3-port network is altered, when conditions of perfect absorption are met but the input waves phase and amplitude vary. In that regard, we propose optimized structures which feature both perfect absorption and perfect transmission at the same frequency by tuning the amplitudes and phases of the input waves.

One-dimensional topological edge modes are usually studied considering the interface between two different semi infinite periodic crystals (PCs) with inverted band structure around the Dirac point. Here we consider the case where the two PCs are finite, constituting an open scattering system, and we study the influence of the size of this finite structure on the interface mode by inspecting the complex resonances. First we show the complex resonance distribution corresponding to the band inversion around the Dirac point. Perturbations from the Dirac point display the emergence of the localized interface mode. We also report on a remarkable robustness of the interface mode as the system size varies which persists even for the smallest possible size., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians are obtained to describe coherent perfect absorbing and lasing boundary conditions. PT -symmetry of the Hamiltonians enables to design configurations which perfectly absorb at multiple frequencies. Broadened and flat perfect absorption is predicted at the exceptional point of PT -symmetry breaking while, for a particular case, absorption is enhanced with the use of gain. The aforementioned phenomena are illustrated for acoustic scattering through Helmholtz resonators revealing how tailoring the non-Hermiticity of acoustic metamaterials leads to novel mechanisms for enhanced absorption.

In this work, we analytically report Coherent Perfect Absorption induced by the acoustic nonlinear response of a Helmholtz Resonator side loaded to a waveguide. In particular, we show that this two-port acoustic system can perfectly absorb two high amplitude symmetric incident waves when the additive nonlinear losses in the HR, induced by the jet flow separation, together with the weak linear viscothermal losses of the HR balance the radiation losses to the waveguide. For the case of the one-sided incidence configuration, this condition leads to an absorption equal to 0.5. This result, which is verified experimentally, is in a good agreement with an analytical nonlinear model of the impedance of the HR. The nonlinear control of perfect absorption using resonators will open new possibilities in the design of high amplitude sound attenuators for aero-engine applications.

We experimentally report perfect acoustic absorption through the interplay of the inherent losses and transparent modes with high $Q$ factor. These modes are generated in a two-port, one-dimensional waveguide which is side-loaded by isolated resonators of moderate $Q$ factor. In symmetric structures, we show that in the presence of small inherent losses, these modes lead to coherent perfect absorption associated with one-sided absorption slightly larger than 0.5. In asymmetric structures, near perfect one-sided absorption is possible (96 \%) with a deep sub-wavelength sample ($\lambda/28$). The control of strong absorption by the proper tuning of few resonators with weak losses will open new possibilities in various wave-control devices.

We implement the concept of complete local symmetry in lossy acoustic waveguides. Despite the presence of losses, the existence of a spatially invariant current is shown theoretically and observed experimentally. We demonstrate how this invariant current leads to the generalization of the Bloch and parity theorems for lossy systems defining a mapping of the pressure field between symmetry related spatial domains. Using experimental data we verify this mapping with remarkable accuracy. For the performed experiment we employ a construction technique based on local symmetries which allows the design of setups with prescribed perfect transmission resonances in the lossless case. Our results reveal the fundamental role of symmetries in restricted spatial domains and clearly indicate that completely locally symmetric devices constitute a promising class of setups, regarding the manipulation of wave propagation., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We experimentally and analytically report broadband and narrowband perfect absorption in two different acoustic waveguide-resonator geometries by the mechanism of critical coupling. In the first geometry the resonator (a Helmholtz resonator) is side-loaded to the waveguide and it has a moderate quality factor. In the second geometry the resonator (a viscoelastic porous plate) is in-line loaded and it contains two resonant modes with low quality factor. The interplay between the energy leakage of the resonant modes into the waveguide and the inherent losses of the system reveals a perfect and a broadband nearly perfect absorption. The results shown in this work can motivate relevant research for the design of broadband perfect absorbers in other domains of wave physics.

We report experimental results and study theoretically soliton formation and propagation in an airfilled acoustic waveguide side loaded with Helmholtz resonators. Our theoretical approach relies on a transmission-line description of this setting, which leads to a nonlinear dynamical lattice model. The latter is treated analytically, by means of dynamical systems and multiscale expansion techniques, and leads to various soliton solutions for the pressure. These include Boussinesq-like and Korteweg-de Vries pulse-shaped solitons, as well as nonlinear Schr\"{o}odinger envelope solitons. The analytical predictions are in excellent agreement with direct numerical simulations and in qualitative agreement with the experimental observations., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

We investigate the sound propagation in an air-filled tube periodically loaded with Helmholtz resonators. By tuning the Helmholtz with the Bragg resonance, we study the efficiency of slow sound propagation in the presence of the intrinsic viscothermal losses of the system. While in the lossless case the overlapping of the resonances results in slow sound induced transparency of a narrow frequency band surrounded by a strong and broadband gap, the inclusion of the unavoidable losses imposes limits to the slowdown factor and the maximum transmission. Experiments, theory and finite element simulations have been used for the characterization of acoustic wave propagation. Experiments, in good agreement with the lossy theory, reveal the possibility of slowing sound at low frequencies by 20 times. A trade-off among the relevant parameters (delay time, maximum transmission, bandwidth) as a function of the tuning between Bragg and Helmholtz resonance frequency is also presented.
