Due to allergy concerns, it is mandatory under EU law to declare in food products all ingredients derived from fish. Gelatine is prepared from the waste collagen of animal carcasses, including piscine, bovine and porcine materials, and is an ingredient in a wide range of foods. The Elliott Review into the integrity and assurance of food supply networks highlighted requirements for analytical surveillance methods to support due diligence, food safety and authenticity. We present the development of a method to extract gelatine from foods and determine the presence of piscine gelatine by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry using a suite of sixteen piscine marker peptides. The method has been successfully applied to gelatine granules, capsules and composite retail food products. While a study is required to determine parameters including the limit of detection of this method, the data indicate the method is reproducible between replicates of sub-samples and applies to a range of piscine gelatines collected over 16 years. Once validation studies are complete, there is potential for enforcement officers to apply the technology to verify the authenticity of fish products to support consumers in ensuring food safety and also food provenance relating to animal origin.

As the proteomic analysis of dietary peptides retrieved from archaeological materials becomes more common, new methods of authentication need to be considered. Here we present a quality control database (hereafter QCD) developed specifically for ancient dental calculus. By using the QCD as a first screening step we hope it can help users quickly identify problematic samples as well as those which could potentially be good candidates for endogenous dietary proteins. The extensive peat bogs of Southern Scandinavia have yielded rich Mesolithic archaeological assemblages, with one of the most iconic artefacts being the bone point. Although great in number they remain understudied. Here we present a combined investigation of the typology, protein-based species composition, and absolute chronology of Maglemosian bone points. The majority of the bone points are made from cervids and bovines. However, changes both in species composition and barb morphology can be directly linked to a paucity of finds lasting nearly 600 years in Southern Scandinavia around 10,300 cal BP. We hypothesize that this hiatus was climate-driven and forced hunter-gatherers to abandon the lakes. Furthermore, the marked change in bone points coincides with a change in lithic technology. We, therefore, propose that the Maglemose culture in Southern Scandinavia is fundamentally divided into an Early Complex and a Late Complex.

We review the extant data and present new evidence from two recently investigated sites found on the Serbian side of the Danube River – Tabula Traiana and Dubočka‐Kozja caves. The two sites have yielded layers dating to both the Middle and Upper Palaeolithic and have been investigated by the application of modern standards of excavation and recovery along with a suite of state‐of‐the‐art analytical procedures. The presentation focuses on micromorphological analyses of the caves’ sediments, characterisation of cryptotephra, a suite of new radiometric dates (accelerator mass spectrometry and optically stimulated luminescence) as well as proteomics (zooarchaeology by mass spectrometry) and stable isotope data in discerning patterns of human occupation of these locales over the long term.
