5. Comparative toxicity of spinetoram to Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood and its parasitoid Encarsia formosa Gahan

Abstract

The role of selective new generation bioisecticides, beside their effectiveness against key pests, relies on their safety to beneficial arthropods. Spinetoram, a semi-synthetic analogue of the microbial-derived bioinsecticide spinosad is registered worldwide for application in numerous crops, but assessment of its ecotoxicological risk to beneficial arthropods has scarcely been documented. Moreover, this is the first report on toxic effects of spinetoram on a pest, the greenhouse whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), and/or its successful biocontrol agent, the parasitoid Encarsia formosa Gahan (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae). Under laboratory conditions, we assessed the acute toxicity of spinetoram insecticide (25% a.i.) to adults, nymphs and eggs of the greenhouse whitefly, as well as to parasitoid adults and pupae. In all concentration-response bioassays, the spinetoram insecticide was applied to tobacco leaves settled onto 1% agar layer in ventilated Petri dishes using a Potter spray tower. The parameters of spinetoram acute toxicity to adults of both the pest and the parasitoid were evaluated in residual contact bioassays, while whitefly eggs and nymphs, and parasitoid pupae were topically treated with a series of spinetoram concentrations, covering a range of 10-90% mortality. Lethal spinetoram effects on the parasitoid E. formosa were assessed through selectivity ratio (SR) estimations, showing the ratios beetween median lethal concentrations (LC50s) estimated for the parasitoid, and LC50s estimated for the pest. The following LC50 values were obtained: 4.593, 15.027 and 11.73 mg A.I./l for whitefly adults, nymphs and eggs, respectively, and 0.686 and 1.715 mg A.I./l for parasitoid adults and pupae, respectively. The calculated SR estimations were below 1, indicating that spinetoram insecticide is non-selective to both tested stages of the parasitoid E. formosa. A more detailed understanding of spinetoram impact on E. formosa in whitefly integrated management requires further evaluation of sublethal effects and greenhouse trials, with an emphasis on population-level responses.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBiological invasions by alien agricultural insect pests represent nowadays a major threat to the durability of agricultural systems. In this study, we report for the first time the presence of an invasive economic pest of ornamental and solanaceous crops in Tunisia: the cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsisTinsley (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae). It is native to America and has been spreading in Asia and the Mediterranean Basin. It was found in autumn 2021 forming dense colonies on Lantana camaraL. (Verbenaceae) used for ornamental purposes in urban parks in the governorate of Tunis and on tomato Lycopersicon esculentumMill. (Solanaceae) protected crops in the governorate of Sousse. Phenacoccus solenopsiswas identified using an integrative approach based on morphological features and molecular analysis. Phylogenetic analysis using the mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I (mtCOI) sequences of P. solenopsispopulations from native and invaded areas retrieved in GenBank showed that Tunisian specimens might derive from an Asian population. We found that Nephus quadrimaculatusHerbst (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae: Scymninae) is the only natural enemy associated with this newly introduced pest so far. This is the first report of P. solenopsisattacking Lantana and tomato plants in Tunisia, and it should be considered as a potential threat to associated crops.

Abstract

The egg parasitoid Trichogramma japonicum (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) is used for biological control of lepidopteran pests, and it could be used for optimizing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in rice crop. Chlorantraniliprole is a diamide insecticide broadly applied for pest control in rice cropping systems and it has been generally considered harmless to egg parasitoids. However, the impact of sublethal or low lethal concentrations of chlorantraniliprole on T. japonicum remains unclear. In this context, under laboratory conditions we assessed the acute toxicity of chlorantraniliprole on T. japonicum as well as sublethal effects of a low lethal concentration (LC10) on key biological traits of the parasitoid. In addition, we also evaluated the impact of chlorantraniliprole on the biocontrol service provided by T. japonicum on the pest Chilo suppressalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) under field conditions. The LC10 of chlorantraniliprole on adult parasitoids through exposure with residues was 0.110 mg/L, and this LC10 induced hormesis in exposed individuals; locomotory activity, respiratory metabolism and mass reproduction of T. japonicum were enhanced. Under field conditions, chlorantraniliprole led to increased biocontrol service provided by T. japonicum (reduced pest damage). These results can be useful for optimizing further the use of Trichogramma parasitoids into IPM in rice crops. It also hints the importance of carrying out careful risk-assessment of pesticide non-lethal effects under field conditions when developing IPM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
