Are more solar panels always better in terms of carbon impact for a local energy community, and what is the influence of energy sufficiency? The answer is simple when the national electrical grid is taken as an infinite source of storage. However, this answer becomes uncertain if we consider that exporting power at the national scale is not a desired option. Although this is a conservative hypothesis, it is considered for technical and social reasons. In doing so, load profiles become a key to evaluating the carbon impact of hybrid systems with solar panels plus storage units. To summarize the impact of any load profiles on the optimal sizing of solar panels, we propose a novel index denoted 'natural self-sufficiency'. Our results show that not only reducing energy demand but also being more flexible significantly affects the carbon emissions related to solar panels. Obwohl dies eine konservative Hypothese ist, wird sie aus technischen und sozialen Gründen in Betracht gezogen. Unter dieser vorsichtigeren Annahme werden Belastungsprofile zu einem Schlüssel für die Bewertung der Kohlenstoffauswirkungen von Hybridsystemen mit Solarmodulen und Speichereinheiten. Um die Auswirkungen beliebiger Profile auf die optimale Dimensionierung von Solarmodulen zusammenzufassen, schlagen wir einen neuartigen Index vor, der als 'natürliche Autarkie' bezeichnet wird. Unsere Ergebnisse zeigen, dass nicht nur die Verringerung des Energiebedarfs, sondern auch eine größere Flexibilität die Kohlenstoffemissionen im Zusammenhang mit Solarmodulen erheblich beeinflusst.

International audience; This paper proposes a generic methodology for combined cycle gas turbines (CCGT) modeling. The main objectives are the estimation of the CO2 emissions for specific units and their integration in an environmental power dispatch that considers several plants. At first a design procedure aims at calibrating the model using the sparse information advised by the manufactures. Off-design points are also investigated in order to estimate the CO2 emissions on the whole operating range of the units. The obtained results show a good consistency with the emission coefficients found in the literature for that type of units. Then those carbon costs are used as input parameters for a unit commitment problem (UC). The Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulation minimizes the global emissions for a set of different units on Jurong Island in Singapore. The grid emission factor obtained for the simulated network displays values close to the registered field data which validates the developed model. Finally, a tightened formulation of the power dispatch problem is introduced. The objective is to reduce the computational time while guaranteeing good performance of the return solutions.

L’augmentation de la consommation pour soutenir la croissance, le souci de réduction des gaz à effet de serre et les avancées technologiques ont favorisé le développement des sources d’énergie renouvelables depuis les années 90. L’implantation de ces générateurs décentralisés a progressivement modifié l’architecture du réseau en passant d’un modèle vertical à une situation davantage clusterisée. Ce réseau maillé voit ainsi apparaitre de nouveaux acteurs, à la fois producteurs et consommateurs (en anglais, les « prosumers»). Pour ce type de structures, la stratégie classique actuelle consiste à acheter l'ensemble de l'énergie consommée alors que la totalité de la production est vendue séparément à des tarifs intéressants. Avec les progrès réalisés sur les différentes technologies de stockage, de nouveaux degrés de liberté apparaissent et des opérations plus intelligentes deviennent possibles. L’objet de l’étude est un microréseau comprenant un générateur photovoltaïque et un consommateur tertiaire associés à un moyen de stockage. Deux technologies sont envisagées avec des volants d’inertie dans un premier temps et une batterie électrochimique (Li-ion) par la suite. Les domaines d’étude relatifs à ce type de système sont la gestion énergétique par planification, la commande temps réel et le dimensionnement. Les travaux de cette thèse se concentrent d’abord sur la problématique de gestion par optimisation des flux d’énergie. Différents algorithmes sont ainsi utilisés et comparés pour planifier le fonctionnement du microréseau. L’objectif est de diminuer la facture énergétique en tenant compte des données de consommation et production mais également des politiques tarifaires en vigueur et d’éventuelles contraintes de fonctionnement imposées par le fournisseur d’énergie. Dans un second temps la problématique de dimensionnement est abordée avec une démarche de conception optimale intégrant la boucle de gestion dès la phase de design. Nous montrons plus particulièrement comment l’adéquation entre les méthodes d’optimisation utilisées et le modèle du microréseau employé peut permettre la réduction significative des temps de calcul. Une configuration optimale du microréseau, valable sur des horizons temporels longs intégrant les alternances saisonnières, peut finalement se dégager. Les travaux se concluent sur une phase d’analyse avec des dimensionnements établis pour différents contextes tarifaires. Le but est de dégager des domaines permettant de valoriser et justifier l’installation d’un moyen de stockage qui s’avère indispensable pour soutenir le développement des sources d’énergies renouvelables et assurer la transition énergétique.

The scope of the paper is to investigate different strategies for the design of a multi-energy system considered as a systemic optimization problem. The objective is to determine the best sizes of the energy assets such as electrochemical and thermal storages, cogeneration units, solar generators and chillers. In these cases, the techno-economic optimization is a tradeoff between the operating costs and the capital expenditures in the form of integrated management and design of the system. The paper addresses the challenges of these optimization problems in two steps. The former implements generic piecewise linearization techniques based on non-linear models. That approach allows a significant reduction of the computational time for the management loop of the assets (i.e. optimal power dispatch). The latter takes into consideration the integration of that management loop in different architectures for optimal system planning. The main contribution of the paper toward filling the gap in the literature is to investigate a wide range of optimization frameworks - with bi-level optimizations (using both deterministic and evolutionary methods), Monte-Carlo simulations as well as a performant ‘all-in-one’ approach in which both sizes and controls are variables of a single mathematical problem formulation. Finally, a thorough results analysis highlights that the best solution tends to be the same whether the objective to optimize is the traditional net present value at the end of the system lifespan or the total yearly cost of ownership. To face the increasing demand of electrical power in compliance with the liberalization of the electricity market and the need of reducing CO2 emissions, many distributed energy resources have emerged and especially the generation systems that utilize renewable energy sources. In the nearfuture, the grid could be described as an aggregation of several microgrids both consumer and producer. For those "prosumers", a classical strategy consists in selling all the highly subsidized production at important prices while all consumed energy is purchased. Smarter operations now become possible with developments of energy storage technologies and evolving prices policies. The microgrid considered in the thesis is composed of an industrial load and a photovoltaic generator associated to an energy storage. Two technologies are considered with high speed flywheels on one hand and a Li-ion electrochemical battery on the other. The common study referring to such systems allude to the optimal scheduling, the real-time management and the sizing methodology. Firstly in the thesis, the optimal power flow dispatching is performed using various algorithms. Those operations aim at reducing the electrical bill taking account of consumption and production forecasts as well as the different fares and possible constraints imposed by the power supplier. Then the design strategy is investigated. The approach consists in simultaneously integrating the energy management and the sizing of the system. We particularly underline the complexity of the resulting optimization problem and how it can be solved using suitable optimization methods in compliance with relevant models of the microgrid. We specifically show the reduction of the computational time allowing the microgrid simulation over long time durations in the optimization process in order to take seasonal variations into account. In the last part a cost analysis is performed, and different design are computed depending on the prices policies. International audience; Investment and operation of microgrids are challenging, especially when dealing with large-scale problems. As a result, optimization approaches are commonly used to tackle this issue. While most studies do not take renewal investment into account, this paper addresses the dynamic (multi-stage) investment and operation of a simple microgrid including Li-ion batteries and solar panels. Because the investment dynamic is a slow process compared to the operation, two time scales are introduced to formulate the problem. We show how to bridge the gap between these two time scales in order to ensure time continuity. Then, the problem is solved in a deterministic framework by using Mixed-Integer-Linear-Programming (MILP) for both time scales. Clustering methods are also introduced to reduce the computational complexity of the problem by reducing the length of the simulation periods (in terms of time steps). The multi-stage approach not only optimizes the size of technologies, but also determines the investment pathway along the horizon depending on the technoeconomic objective.
