Security and privacy enhancing technologies are an essential feature for the intelligent transportation system (ITS) deployment. As security system introduces generally an overhead, the test and evaluation of a defined security solution is as important as its design. In this context, the PRESERVE project aims to design, implement and test a secure and scalable security system for ITS. In this paper, the authors focus on the PRESERVE security tests and precisely the joint trial tests with the French Score@F FOT. The authors present the test cases of PRESERVE VSS integrated with Score@F FOT system and evaluated performance indicators. This will be the first paper describing PRESERVE test cases and Score@F platforms integrating security solution.

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are cooperative systems based on vehicular communications. They involve different actors like manufacturers, transportations authorities and users and enable diverse ITS applications to enhance safety in transportation systems. One of the ultimate design goals of ITS is to have a robust system that resists to various security attacks. Thus, security remains a major challenge before the deployment of such systems. In this paper, we present the ITS framework and communication architecture in Europe. Then, we identify inherent threats in this architecture. Finally, and using ETSI threat analysis methodology, we propose a risk analysis of ITS.

Current authentications with a secret key are based on the Challenge-Response paradigm. This mechanism avoids the clear transmission of the password in the network. Most protocols in Internet applications integrate this mechanism to authenticate a client before providing a service. Unfortunately this method in the protocol design increases the protocolar exchanges. This contribution is equivalent to Challenge-Response model but it permits to reduce the handshakes. Based on HMAC One-Time-Password (HOTP), the challenge is implicit in the user request. This solution has same security properties of a Challenge-Response authentication and become integrated naturally into Session Initiation Protocol (SIP); SIP is nowadays most popular Voice over IP protocol. Integrated in the existing SIP parameter, the solution doesn't change the SIP signaling, thus permitting a total interoperability between equipments modified or not.
