Abstract

Regular remote sensing of the magnetic field embedded within the million-degree solar corona is severely lacking. This reality impedes fundamental investigations of the nature of coronal heating, the generation of solar and stellar winds, and the impulsive release of energy into the solar system via flares and other eruptive phenomena. Resulting from advancements in large aperture solar coronagraphy, we report unprecedented maps of polarized spectra emitted at 1074 nm by Fe+12 atoms in the active corona. We detect clear signatures of the Zeeman effect that are produced by the coronal magnetic field along the optically thin path length of its formation. Our comparisons with global magnetohydrodynamic models highlight the valuable constraints that these measurements provide for coronal modeling efforts, which are anticipated to yield subsequent benefits for space weather research and forecasting., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, published in Science Advances

Abstract

The efficient release of magnetic energy in astrophysical plasmas, such as during solar flares, can in principle be achieved through magnetic diffusion, at a rate determined by the associated electric field. However, attempts at measuring electric fields in the solar atmosphere are scarce, and none exist for sites where the magnetic energy is presumably released. Here, we present observations of an energetic event using the National Science Foundation's Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, where we detect the polarization signature of electric fields associated with magnetic diffusion. We measure the linear and circular polarization across the hydrogen H-epsilon Balmer line at 397 nm at the site of a brightening event in the solar chromosphere. Our spectro-polarimetric modeling demonstrates that the observed polarization signals can only be explained by the presence of electric fields, providing conclusive evidence of magnetic diffusion, and opening a new window for the quantitative study of this mechanism in space plasmas., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures, published in Nature Communications

Abstract

We present an interpretation of the recent Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) observations of propagating wavefronts in the lower solar atmosphere. Using MPS/University of Chicago MHD (MURaM) radiative magnetohydrodynamic simulations spanning solar photosphere, overshoot region, and lower chromosphere, we identify three acoustic-wave source mechanisms, each occurring at a different atmospheric height. We synthesize the DKIST Visible Broadband Imager (VBI) G-band, blue-continuum, and CaIIK signatures of these waves at high spatial and temporal resolution, and conclude that the wavefronts observed by DKIST likely originate from acoustic sources at the top of the solar photosphere overshoot region and in the chromosphere proper. The overall importance of these local sources to the atmospheric energy and momentum budget of the solar atmosphere is unknown, but one of the excitation mechanism identified (upward propagating shock interaction with down-welling chromospheric plasma resulting in acoustic radiation) appears to be an important shock dissipation mechanism. Abstract

Postoperative acute kidney injury (PO-AKI) is a common complication of major surgery that is strongly associated with short-term surgical complications and long-term adverse outcomes, including increased risk of chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular events and death. Risk factors for PO-AKI include older age and comorbid diseases such as chronic kidney disease and diabetes mellitus. PO-AKI is best defined as AKI occurring within 7 days of an operative intervention using the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) definition of AKI; however, additional prognostic information may be gained from detailed clinical assessment and other diagnostic investigations in the form of a focused kidney health assessment (KHA). Prevention of PO-AKI is largely based on identification of high baseline risk, monitoring and reduction of nephrotoxic insults, whereas treatment involves the application of a bundle of interventions to avoid secondary kidney injury and mitigate the severity of AKI. As PO-AKI is strongly associated with long-term adverse outcomes, some form of follow-up KHA is essential; however, the form and location of this will be dictated by the nature and severity of the AKI. In this Consensus Statement, we provide graded recommendations for AKI after non-cardiac surgery and highlight priorities for future research.

Abstract

A multi-conjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) system for solar observations has been set up at the 1.6-meter clearaperture New Solar Telescope (NST) in Big Bear Lake, California. Being a pathnder to address fundamentaldesign questions in solar MCAO experimentally, the system is purposely exible. We deploy three deformablemirrors (DMs). One of which is conjugate to the telescope pupil, and the other two to distinct higher altitudes.The pupil DM can be either placed into a pupil image up- or downstream of the high-altitude DMs. Thehigh-altitude DMs can be separately and quickly conjugated to various altitudes between 2 and 8 km. ThreeShack-Hartmann wavefront sensor units are available, one for low-order, multi-directional sensing and two highorderon-axis sensing of which one is used at a time. The exibility of the setup allows us to experimentallystudy the various sequencings of DMs and WFSs, which are hard to simulate conclusively. We report on thepreliminary results and summarize the design and the conguration options of the MCAO system at Big BearSolar Observatory (BBSO).

Abstract

There are significant advantages in combining Hinode observations with ground-based instruments that can observe additional spectral diagnostics at higher data rates and with greater flexibility. However, ground-based observations, because of the random effects of weather and seeing as well as the complexities data analysis due to changing instrumental configurations, have traditionally been less efficient than satellite observations in producing useful datasets. Future large ground-based telescopes will need to find new ways to optimize both their operational efficiency and scientific output. We have begun experimenting with service-mode or queue-mode observations at the Dunn Solar Telescope using the Interferometric Bidimensional Spectrometer (IBIS) as part of joint Hinode campaigns. 44. The discrepancy in G-band contrast: Where is the quiet Sun?

Abstract

We compare the rms contrast in observed speckle reconstructed G-band images with synthetic filtergrams computed from two magneto-hydrodynamic simulation snapshots. The observations consist of 103 bursts of 80 frames each taken at the Dunn Solar Telescope (DST), sampled at twice the diffraction limit of the telescope. The speckle reconstructions account for the performance of the Adaptive Optics (AO) system at the DST to supply reliable photometry. We find a considerable discrepancy in the observed rms contrast of 14.1% for the best reconstructed images, and the synthetic rms contrast of 21.5% in a simulation snapshot thought to be representative of the quiet Sun. The areas of features in the synthetic filtergrams that have positive or negative contrast beyond the minimum and maximum values in the reconstructed images have spatial scales that should be resolved. This leads us to conclude that there are fundamental differences in the rms G-band contrast between observed and computed filtergrams. On the basis of the substantially reduced granular contrast of 16.3% in the synthetic plage filtergram we speculate that the quiet-Sun may contain more weak magnetic field than previously thought., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

45. Detection of opposite polarities in a sunspot light bridge: evidence of low-altitude magnetic reconnection

Abstract

A multi-wavelength photometric analysis was performed in order to study the sub-structure of a sunspot light bridge in the photosphere and the chromosphere. Active region NOAA 8350 was observed on 1998 October 8. The data consist of a 100 min time series of 2D spectral scans of the lines FeI 5576, H-alpha 6563, FeI 6302.5, and continuum images at 5571. We recorded line-of-sight magnetograms in 6302.5. The observations were taken at the Dunn Solar Telescope at U. S. National Solar Observatory, Sacramento Peak. We find evidence for plasma ejection from a light bridge followed by Ellerman bombs. Magnetograms of the same region reveal opposite polarity in light-bridge with respect to the umbra. These facts support the notion that low altitude magnetic reconnection can result in the magnetic cancellation as observed in the photosphere., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures.
