Abstract

Evaluation of predictive deep learning (DL) models beyond conventional performance metrics has become increasingly important for applications in sensitive environments like healthcare. Such models might have the capability to encode and analyse large sets of data but they often lack comprehensive interpretability methods, preventing clinical trust in predictive outcomes. Quantifying uncertainty of a prediction is one way to provide such interpretability and promote trust. However, relatively little attention has been paid to how to include such requirements into the training of the model. In this paper we: (i) quantify the data (aleatoric) and model (epistemic) uncertainty of a DL model for Cardiac Resynchronisation Therapy response prediction from cardiac magnetic resonance images, and (ii) propose and perform a preliminary investigation of an uncertainty-aware loss function that can be used to retrain an existing DL image-based classification model to encourage confidence in correct predictions and reduce confidence in incorrect predictions. Abstract

Lead-free piezoelectric (K, Na)NbO3 (KNN) is considered one of the promising candidates for the replacement of Pb(ZrxTi1−x)O3. Several studies underlined the issue of K and Na volatility with increasing deposition temperatures, leading to high leakage currents in thin films, which still represents a major drawback for applications. This paper shows how epitaxial growth with concomitant preferred orientation of KNN films on niobium-doped strontium titanate (Nb:STO) depends on growth temperature and substrate strain. A preferred out-of-plane polar (001) orientation of KNN is obtained at high temperatures (>600 °C), while (100) orientation is dominant for lower ones. The (001) orientation is forced out-of-plane due to the sizeable in-plane stress derived from a negative lattice mismatch of pseudo-cubic KNN with respect to the underlying cubic (001) Nb:STO substrate. Moreover, we show that K-Na deficiency and high leakage of epitaxial KNN films deposited at high temperatures are accompanied by the appearance of a pattern of orthogonal spontaneous ferroelectric domains aligned to the [100] and [010] directions of Nb:STO. This pattern, visible in secondary electron microscopy, piezoforce response microscopy, and conductive atomic force microscopy images, is uncorrelated to the surface morphology. Supported by reciprocal space mapping by x-ray diffraction, this phenomenon is interpreted as the result of strain relaxation via ferroelectric domain formation related to K-Na deficient films displaying a sizable and increasing compressive strain when grown on Nb:SrTiO3. Our findings suggest that strain engineering strategies in thin films could be used to stabilize specific configurations of piezo- and ferroelectric domains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Coral reefs are threatened by climate change and the effects of human activity on the marine environment. Researchers are attempting to rescue this fragile ecosystem through coral restoration actions, and a common step in these procedures is transplanting the new coral colonies into coral reefs. To do that, commercial concrete or epoxy resins, also called putty, are utilized, highlighting different concerns about their mechanical and hardening performances and their impact and fate once released into the environment. Hence, this study presents a new biodegradable epoxidized soybean oil acrylate (ESOA)/zein-based coral putty capable of quick hardening underwater as an ecofriendly alternative for transplantation of new coral colonies in the reef. Coral putty is composed of two components, containing one a radical initiator and the other a radical accelerator. Once the two components are mixed, coral putty becomes hard underwater in 20–25 min, showing a hardening timescale much faster than other commercial products. The coral putty is biocompatible when applied to the coral Stylophora pistillata in aquaria and Acropora tenuis corals are out-planted on the reef in the Maldives, demonstrating how this new class of vegetable-oil-based materials can be a more sustainable alternative to epoxy resins commonly used in coral restoration procedures.

10. Hydrothermal synthesis of Cu-substituted Ni ferrites: Structural, morphological, and magnetic properties

Abstract

Cu-substituted Ni ferrite systems are produced following a hydrothermal synthetic route carried out at relatively mild conditions (i.e., below 200 °C). Different degrees of substitution were investigated, ranging from bare Ni ferrite to a complete Cu-substituted system (by replacing 100% of Ni with Cu). Morphological and structural characterisations point out that the introduction of Cu in the Ni ferrite (below 50% substitution) causes a gradual reduction of the average diameter of the ferrite polyhedral nanoparticles maintaining the Ni ferrite structure. At higher content of Cu, instead, the morphology evolves toward the co-presence of iron oxides (magnetite and hematite) and copper oxide (tenorite), without the formation of bare Cu ferrite. The partially substituted Ni ferrite nanomaterials exhibit a mostly superparamagnetic behaviour in all samples, registering a reduction of the values of magnetisation saturation by increasing the Cu content. Transmission Mössbauer spectroscopy performed on these nanomaterials evidenced a gradual lowering of the Fe fraction occupying the octahedral sites and a consequent increment of the Fe fraction in the tetrahedral sites. Quantitative analysis confirms the gradual reduction of the Ni content within the ferrite samples, coupled with the opposite increment of the Cu content, whereas the Fe content is lower in the case of Ni75-Cu25 sample. This particular behaviour can be associated with the influence of Cu substitution in the Ni ferrite structure, with preferential replacement of Fe from the octahedral B-sites toward the tetrahedral A-sites.

Abstract

Tetragonal phase of CuMnAs progressively appears as one of the key materials for antiferromagnetic spintronics due to efficient current-induced spin-orbit torques whose existence can be directly inferred from crystal symmetry. Theoretical understanding of spintronic phenomena in this material, however, relies on the detailed knowledge of electronic structure (band structure and corresponding wave functions) which has so far been tested only to a limited extent. We show that AC permittivity (obtained from ellipsometry) and UV photoelectron spectra agree with density functional calculations. Abstract

The electrical manipulation of spins in semiconductors, without magnetic fields or auxiliary ferromagnetic materials, represents the holy grail for spintronics. The use of Rashba effect is very attractive because the k-dependent spin-splitting is originated by an electric field. So far only tiny effects in two-dimensional electron gases (2DEG) have been exploited. Recently, GeTe has been predicted to have bulk bands with giant Rashba-like splitting, originated by the inversion symmetry breaking due to ferroelectric polarization. In this work, we show that GeTe(111) surfaces with inwards or outwards ferroelectric polarizations display opposite sense of circulation of spin in bulk Rashba bands, as seen by spin and angular resolved photoemission experiments. Our results represent the first experimental demonstration of ferroelectric control of the spin texture in a semiconductor, a fundamental milestone towards the exploitation of the non-volatile electrically switchable spin texture of GeTe in spintronic devices., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

GeTe has been proposed as the father compound of a new class of functional materials displaying bulk Rashba effects coupled to ferroelectricity: ferroelectric Rashba semiconductors. In nice agreement with first principle calculations, we show by angular resolved photoemission and piezo-force microscopy that GeTe displays surface and bulk Rashba bands arising from the intrinsic inversion symmetry breaking provided by the remanent ferroelectric polarization. Abstract

Recent studies have demonstrated the potential of antiferromagnets as the active component in spintronic devices. This is in contrast to their current passive role as pinning layers in hard disk read heads and magnetic memories. Here we report the epitaxial growth of a new high-temperature antiferromagnetic material, tetragonal CuMnAs, which exhibits excellent crystal quality, chemical order and compatibility with existing semiconductor technologies. We demonstrate its growth on the III-V semiconductors GaAs and GaP, and show that the structure is also lattice matched to Si. Neutron diffraction shows collinear antiferromagnetic order with a high Ne\'el temperature. Combined with our demonstration of room-temperature exchange coupling in a CuMnAs/Fe bilayer, we conclude that tetragonal CuMnAs films are suitable candidate materials for antiferromagnetic spintronics., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, Published in Nature Communications (2013)

20. Proteasome-mediated degradation of long-range nucleases negatively regulates resection of DNA double-strand breaks

Abstract

Homologous recombination is initiated by the nucleolytic degradation (resection) of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). DSB resection is a two-step process. In the short-range step, the MRX (Mre11-Rad50-Xrs2) complex, together with Sae2, incises the 5′-terminated strand at the DSB end and resects back toward the DNA end. Then, the long-range resection nucleases Exo1 and Dna2 further elongate the resected DNA tracts. We found that mutations lowering proteasome functionality bypass the need for Sae2 in DSB resection. In particular, the dysfunction of the proteasome subunit Rpn11 leads to hyper-resection and increases the levels of both Exo1 and Dna2 to such an extent that it allows the bypass of the requirement for either Exo1 or Dna2, but not for both. These observations, along with the finding that Exo1 and Dna2 are ubiquitylated, indicate a role of the proteasome in restraining DSB resection by negatively controlling the abundance of the long-range resection nucleases.

Abstract

The possibility to engineer (GeTe)m(Sb2Te3)n phase-change materials to co-host ferroelectricity is extremely attractive. The combination of these functionalities holds great technological impact, potentially enabling the design of novel multifunctional devices. Here an experimental and theoretical study of epitaxial (GeTe)m(Sb2Te3)n with GeTe-rich composition is presented. These layered films feature a tunable distribution of (GeTe)m(Sb2Te3)1 blocks of different sizes. Breakthrough evidence of ferroelectric displacement in thick (GeTe)m(Sb2Te3)1 lamellae is provided. The density functional theory calculations suggest the formation of a tilted (GeTe)m slab sandwiched in GeTe-rich blocks. That is, the net ferroelectric polarization is confined almost in-plane, representing an unprecedented case between 2D and bulk ferroelectric materials. The ferroelectric behavior is confirmed by piezoresponse force microscopy and electroresistive measurements. The resilience of the quasi van der Waals character of the films, regardless of their composition, is also demonstrated. Hence, the material developed hereby gathers in a unique 2D platform the phase-change and ferroelectric switching properties, paving the way for the conception of innovative device architectures.

Abstract

Some places have better than expected health trends despite being disadvantaged in other ways. Thematic analysis of qualitative data from stakeholders (N = 25) in two case studies of disadvantaged local authorities the North West and South East of England assessed explanations for the localities’ apparent health resilience. Participants identified ways of working that might contribute to improved life expectancy, such as partnering with third sector, targeting and outcome driven action. Stakeholders were reluctant to assume credit for better-than-expected health outcomes. External factors such as population change, national politics and finances were considered crucial. Local public health stakeholders regard their work as important but unlikely to cause place-centred health resilience.

Abstract

Optical spin orientation and depolarization phenomena in semiconductors are of overwhelming importance for the development of spin-optoelectronics. In this paper we employ Ge-based spin-photodiodes to investigate the room temperature spectral dependence of optical spin orientation in Germanium, in the range 400-1550 nm, and the photo-carrier spin relaxation phenomena. Apart from the maximum in the spin polarization of photo-carriers for photon energy resonant with the direct gap (1550 nm), we experimentally demonstrate the presence of a second sizable peak at 530 nm due to photo-generation far away from the center of the Brillouin zone, within the L valleys. Furthermore, our data indicate that the equivalent the spin lifetime of holes in Ge is in the order of 5-10 ps, meaning that the spin diffusion length for holes at room temperature is larger than expected, in the order of 150-220 nm., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We present a combined experimental and computational method which enables the precise determination of the atomic positions in a thin film using CuK{\alpha} radiation, only. The capabilities of this technique surpass simple structure refinement and allow solving unknown phases stabilized by substrate-induced stress. We derive the appropriate corrections to transform the measured integrated intensities into structure factors. Data collection was performed entirely on routinely available laboratory diffractometers (CuK{\alpha} radiation); the subsequent analysis was carried out by single-crystal direct methods ({\delta} recycling procedure) followed by the least-squares refinement of the structural parameters of the unit cell content. We selected an epitaxial thin film of CuMnAs grown on top of a GaAs substrate, which formed a crystal structure with tetragonal symmetry, differing from the bulk material which is orthorhombic. Here we demonstrate the new tetragonal form of epitaxial CuMnAs grown on GaAs substrate and present consistent high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and stoichiometry analyses.

Abstract

The design of large-scale electronic circuits that are entirely spintronics-driven requires a current source that is highly spin-polarised at and beyond room temperature, cheap to build, efficient at the nanoscale and straightforward to integrate with semiconductors. Yet despite research within several subfields spanning nearly two decades, this key building block is still lacking. We experimentally and theoretically show how the interface between Co and phthalocyanine molecules constitutes a promising candidate. Spin-polarised direct and inverse photoemission experiments reveal a high degree of spin polarisation at room temperature at this interface. We measured a magnetic moment on the molecules's nitrogen pi orbitals, which substantiates an ab-initio theoretical description of highly spin-polarised charge conduction across the interface due to differing spinterface formation mechanims in each spin channel. We propose, through this example, a recipe to engineer simple organic-inorganic interfaces with remarkable spintronic properties that can endure well above room temperature.

Abstract

Here we show the room temperature integrated detection of the helicity of photons with 1300 nm wavelength, via spin- photodiodes based on fully epitaxial Fe/MgO/Ge(001) heterostructures. These devices convert the photon helicity in a variation of the photocurrent ({\Delta}I) for opposite orientations of the Fe magnetization. We found {\Delta}I on the order of 5.9% for 100% circularly polarized light, both in the forward and the reverse bias, with a contribution of 0.8% from the Fe dichroic light absorption and of 5.1% from the spin filtering of photo-generated carriers crossing the Fe/MgO/Ge tunneling barrier., Comment: This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to some imperfections in the figures

Abstract

DNA damage elicits a checkpoint response depending on the Mec1/ATR kinase, which detects the presence of single-stranded DNA and activates the effector kinase Rad53/CHK2. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, one of the signaling circuits leading to Rad53 activation involves the evolutionarily conserved 9-1-1 complex, which acts as a platform for the binding of Dpb11 and Rad9 (referred to as the 9-1-1 axis) to generate a protein complex that allows Mec1 activation. By examining the effects of both loss-of-function and hypermorphic mutations, here, we show that the Cdc55 and Tpd3 subunits of the PP2A phosphatase counteract activation of the 9-1-1 axis. The lack of this inhibitory function results in DNA-damage sensitivity, sustained checkpoint-mediated cell-cycle arrest, and impaired resection of DNA double-strand breaks. However, drug delivery to cancer cells must be optimized to improve the overall therapeutic effect of drug/MFH combination treatments.Purpose: The aim of this work was to demonstrate the potentiation of 2-phenylethynesulfonamide (PES) at various combination treatments with MFH, using low-intensity ultrasound as an intracellular delivery enhancer.Methods: The effect of ultrasound (US), MFH, and PES was first evaluated individually and then as combination treatments. Definity® microbubbles and polyethylene glycol (PEG)-coated iron oxide nanoparticles were used to induce cell sonoporation and MFH, respectively. Assessment of cell membrane permeabilization was evaluated via fluorescence microscopy, iron uptake by cells was quantified by UV-Vis spectroscopy, and cell viability was determined using automatic cell counting.Results: Notable reductions in cancer cell viability were observed when ultrasound was incorporated. For example, the treatment US+PES reduced cell viability by 37% compared to the non-toxic effect of the drug. Similarly, the treatment US+MFH using mild hyperthermia (41°C), reduced cell viability by an additional 18% when compared to the effect of MH alone. Significant improvements were observed for the combination of US+PES+MFH with cell viability reduced by an additional 26% compared to the PES+MFH group. The improved cytotoxicity was attributed to enhanced drug/nanoparticle intracellular delivery, with iron uptake values nearly twice those achieved without ultrasound. Various treatment schedules were examined, and all of them showed substantial cell death, indicating that the time elapsed between sonoporation and magnetic field exposure was not significant.Conclusion: Superior cancer cell-killing patterns took place when ultrasound was incorporated thus demonstrating the in vitro ultrasonic potentiation of PES and mild MFH. Abstract

Operational modal analysis is a robust and practical approach to structural health monitoring which assumes white noise as input. Therefore, the accuracy of this method can be compromised when dealing with colored unknown excitations, in which, for example, harmonic loads induced by the operation of mechanical equipment, may affect the modal parameter estimation. This study aims to address the challenge of identifying both natural and forcing frequencies of a complex building by exploiting the potentiality of both the spectral kurtosis analysis and stochastic subspace identification technique. The first one is based on the evaluation of a statistical quantity characterized by low values when data are stationary and Gaussian and high values when specific frequencies and nonstationarity are present in the signals. It allows the detection of harmonics, transients, and repetitive impulses in the frequency domain. Its combined use with the stochastic subspace identification technique enables us to effectively identify and separate harmonic‐induced vibrations from structural response to ambient white noise. This approach can lead to a more accurate modal parameter estimation that has been investigated in this work through numerical and experimental analyses carried out on the Cardinal Massaia hospital building in Asti, Italy. An experimental daily dynamic campaign has been carried out to acquire accelerations in operational conditions including disturbances due to machinery like elevators and air conditioners. The combined use of kurtosis analysis and stochastic subspace identification techniques has been used to process a large dataset of noisy measurements acquired in operational conditions. Five different measurement setups have been implemented, each one composed of 14 sensors. Notwithstanding the complexity of the case study under investigation for both the structural configuration and difficulties in the experimental data acquisition, this approach allowed to distinguish natural from forcing frequencies, highlighting its accuracy and robustness. Patients and methods: The design of this study was planned to compare two populations that performed DASS-42 test twice within a similar period of time. The first population performed the first DASS test before the treatment and the second test about 3 months later, at the end of two specific REAC neuromodulation treatments, neuropostural optimization (NPO) and neuropsychophysical optimization (NPPO), that have previously shown an efficacy in the treatment of depression, anxiety and stress. The second population (untreated), used as the randomized control group, consisted of a similar group by gender and age, who performed the DASS-42 test in an online platform twice, with an interval of about 3 months between the first and second tests, similar to the interval between the two tests in the treated group. Results: The comparison between the treated group and the control group points out the REAC treatment efficacy in improving the quality of life. At the second DASS-42 test, self-administered about 3 months after the treatments, treated patients were positioned on average values of much milder severity in all the three clusters, depression, anxiety, and stress, while in untreated patients there was no significant difference between the mean values of the first and second DASS tests. Conclusion: The results obtained in this study, evaluated with the DASS-42 test, confirm that REAC-NPO and REAC-NPPO neuromodulation treatments can be useful tools for the clinical treatment of depression, anxiety, and stress, as already proven by previous results evaluated with different psychometric tests. 39. Laser Ablation Modelling: The link between Desorption and Ablation regime

Abstract

A new parameterized model for the ablation phenomena is presented. The model describes the three different regimes usually observed, as a function of the laser fluence. The first one corresponds to a vaporization; it takes place at low fluence and it is well described by a typical Arrhenius expression, dependent on the vaporization energy Ev, of the solid. The true ablation regime, depends on the energy density Ed, of the material, and appears at high laser energy, after reaching threshold fluence. The transition region, that connects both processes, is mainly governed by the structure of the crystal, which determines the threshold fluence necessary to initiate the ablation regime. The model accounts for the link between the vaporization and ablation regimes and provides new insight into the ablation phenomena from the point of view of the structure of the material., Comment: 21 pages, 5 Figures included

PTX induces mitotic block and sensitive cells exit mitosis dying by mitotic catastrophe. Resistant cells remain in block and continue proliferation after drug decay, denoting one of the PTX resistance mechanisms. Mild hyperthermia (HT) triggers mitotic exit of PTX-pretreated cells, overcoming PTX resistance and suggesting HT-forced mitotic exit as a promising strategy to potentiate PTX. Methods and results: Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) were used to deliver mild HT at 42°C in PTX-pretreated breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7 cells sensitive and resistant to PTX. To evaluate mechanism of cell death, cells were classified based on nuclear morphology into interphase, mitotic, micronucleated, and apoptotic. The combined PTX→SPION treatment resulted in an increase in the percentage of micronucleated cells, an indication of forced mitotic exit. Importantly, in PTX-resistant cells, the combination therapy using SPION HT helps to overcome resistance by reducing the number of cells relative to the control. Conclusion: SPION HT potentiates PTX by significantly reducing cell survival, suggesting potential of combined treatment for future clinical translation. Abstract

In this article, we deal with the so-called ‘risky sexual behaviours’ and the spread of HIV/AIDS among the community of MSM (men who have sex with other men). For a long time, both the sociological analysis and the medical and epidemiological approach studied the behaviour of the gay population as “inherently” more problematic in terms of spreading the human immunodeficiency virus. For these studies, even more dangerous are those men who sell sex and sexual services. Starting from a sample of twenty-one male sex workers in Italy and of the use or misuse of condoms during encounters with their male clients, this contribution will try to understand how ‘risky sexual practices’ (like barebacking or doing sex without a condom) are written and re-written. From the sexual script theory to the recent advancement in medicine in the fight against HIV/AIDS (like TasP and PrEP) that shape and reshape how sex is performed, moving from the “gay plague” to the “Truvada whore” and from traditional sexual scripts to the neoliberal sexual actor.
