6. The weak and superfast Cretan detachment, Greece: exhumation at subduction rates in extruding wedges

Abstract

Low-angle normal faults (detachments) are only efficient agents for bringing rocks from 40->100km depth back to the Earth's surface if they operate with extreme slip rates exceeding 20 km [Ma.sup.-1]. Here we propose a slip rate of [greater than or equal to] 20-30 km [Ma.sup.-1] for the Cretan detachment in the Aegean, Greece. The Cretan detachment and the subjacent subduction thrust bounded an extruding wedge above the Miocene Hellenic subduction zone. During exhumation the high-pressure rocks in the wedge were not significantly deformed. Very low shear coupling at the bounding faults (which are therefore weak) is needed to prevent significant deformation in the extruding wedge. The proposed slip rate of [greater than or equal to] 20-30 km [Ma.sup.-1] is similar to the subduction rate of 35-45 km [Ma.sup.-1] at the Hellenic subduction zone. We argue that extruding wedges can only slip at rates similar to subduction rates if there is very low shear coupling at the bounding faults, which may also explain the paradox of almost non-deformed but very rapidly exhumed rocks. Abstract

Based on lithostratigraphic comparisons the Menderes Massif has been correlated with the Cycladic Massif, thereby implying that the eastern Mediterranean consists of a narrow pre-Alpine basement belt which is laterally continuous over a long distance and which experienced a similar Alpine orogenic history. Our work indicates that the architecture, the age of basement and the pre-Alpine and Alpine tectonometamorphic history of both massifs differ fundamentally from each other. The Menderes Massif consists of remnants of the Cycladic Massif which overly an exotic unit, the Menderes nappes. Both massifs do not represent lateral continuations which has implications for palaeogeographic reconstructions. 12. The Variscan structural and metamorphic evolution of the eastern Southalpine basement

Abstract

The basement of the Southern Alps (northern Italy) belongs to the southernmost part of the European Variscan mountain belt. In contrast to other areas of the Alps, the post-Variscan metamorphic and tectonic overprint is weak and therefor permits the unravelling of the Variscan tectonometamorphic evolution of this region. Overprinting criteria and the mapping of the penetrative structural elements (S2 and L2) allow three deformational events to be distinguished. Majo Variscan deformation (D2) in the Southern Alps commenced in the Carboniferous and lasted until the end of the Late Carboniferous. Tectonic movement during D2 was north-directed and was accompanied and followed by greenschist facies metamorphism. Peak metamorphic conditions reached 450-550 [degrees] C and 5-6.5 kbar in the Brixen area and decreased in a southeasterly direction. Tectonic movement during D2 followed subduction of the Plankogel terrane and collision o the Noric terrane (northernmost part of Gondwana) with Laurasia and is interpreted to result from late orogenic extensional collapse of the Variscan mountain chain. Extensional deformation caused exhumation of the basement rocks as evidenced by greenschist facies basement pebbles, which show no substantial retrograde overprint, in Late Carboniferous/Early Permian conglomerates.

Abstract

The exclusive charmonium production process in pp¯ annihilation with an associated π0 meson pp¯ → J=ψπ0 is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. The feasibility of measuring this reaction through the J=ψ → eþe− decay channel with the AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt (PANDA ¯ ) experiment is investigated. Simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as the background rejection from various sources including the pp¯ → πþπ−π0 and pp¯ → J=ψπ0π0 reactions are performed with PANDAROOT, the simulation and analysis software framework of the PANDA ¯ experiment. Abstract

Radiometric (K-Ar and Ar-40/Ar-39) age determinations of volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks, combined with structural, gravity, and seismic reflection data, are used to constrain the age of sedimentary strata contained within the seismically and volcanically active northern Malawi (Nyasa) rift and to characterize changes in basin and flank morphologies with time. Faulting and volcanism within the Tukuyu-Karonga basin began at approximately 8.6 Ma, when sediments were deposited in abroad, initially asymmetric lake basin bounded on its northeastern side by a border fault system with minor topographic relief. Extensions, primarily by a slip along the border fault, and subsequent regional isostatic compensation led to the development of a 5-km-deep basin bounded by broad uplifted flanks. Along the low-relief basin margin opposite border fault, younger stratigraphic sequences commonly onlap older wedge-shaped sequences, although their internal geometry is often progradational. Intrabasinal faulting, flankuplift, and basaltic and felsic volcanism from centers at the northern end of the basin became more important at about 2.5 Ma when cross-rift transfer faults developed to link the Tukuyu-Karonga basin to the Rukwa basin. Local uplift and volcanic construction at the northern end of the basin led to a southeastward shift in the basin's depocenter. Sequence boundaries are commonly erosional along this low-relief (hanging wall) margin and conformable in the deep lake basin. The geometry of stratigraphic sequences and the distribution of the erosion indicate that horizontal and vertical crustal movements both across and along the length of the rift basin led to changes in levels of the lake, irrespective of paleoclimatic fluctuations.

Abstract

The exclusive charmonium production process in $\bar{p}p$ annihilation with an associated $��^0$ meson $\bar{p}p\to J/����^0$ is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. The feasibility of measuring this reaction through the $J/��\to e^+e^-$ decay channel with the PANDA (AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt) experiment is investigated. Simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as the background rejection from various sources including the $\bar{p}p\to��^+��^-��^0$ and $\bar{p}p\to J/����^0��^0$ reactions are performed with PandaRoot, the simulation and analysis software framework of the PANDA experiment. It is shown that the measurement can be done at PANDA with significant constraining power under the assumption of an integrated luminosity attainable in four to five months of data taking at the maximum design luminosity., 25 pages, 22 figures

Abstract

[1] Structural, metamorphic, and geochronologic work shows that the Ampelos/Dilek nappe of the Cycladic blueschist unit in the eastern Aegean constitutes a wedge of high-pressure rocks extruded during early stages of orogeny. The extrusion wedge formed during the incipient collision of the Anatolian microcontinent with Eurasia when subduction and deep underthrusting ceased and the Ampelos/Dilek nappe was thrust southward over the greenschist-facies Menderes nappes along its lower tectonic contact, the Cycladic-Menderes thrust, effectively cutting out a similar to 30- to 40-km-thick section of crust. The upper contact of the Ampelos/Dilek extrusion wedge is the top-to-the-NE Selcuk normal shear zone, along which the Ampelos/Dilek nappe was exhumed by similar to 30-40 km. Detailed Rb-Sr and Ar-40/Ar-39 dating of mylonites demonstrates that both shear zones operated between 42 and 32 Ma. There is no evidence for episodic motion during the similar to 10 Myr life span of the shear zones, suggesting that both shear zones operated in a steady, nonepisodic fashion. Our data provide supporting evidence that simultaneous thrust-type and normal sense shearing can accomplish the early exhumation of deep-seated rocks.

Abstract

Zircon and apatite fission track (ZFT and AFT) and (U-Th)/He, ;40;Ar/;39;Ar hornblende, and U-Pb zircon ages from the granites of Tinos Island in the Aegean Sea, Greece, suggest, together with published ZFT data, that there are three extensional detachments on Tinos. The Tinos granites crosscut the Tinos detachment. Cooling of the granites was controlled by the Livadi detachment, which occurs structurally above the Tinos detachment. Our U-Pb zircon age is 14.6 ± 0.2 Ma and two ;40;Ar/;39;Ar hornblende ages are 14.4 ± 0.4 and 13.7 ± 0.4 Ma. ZFT and AFT ages go from 14.4 ± 1.2 to 12.2 ± 1.0 Ma and 12.8 ± 2.4 to 11.9 ± 2.0 Ma. (U-Th)/He ages are from 10.4 ± 0.2 to 9.9 ± 0.2 Ma (zircon) and 11.9 ± 0.5 to 10.0 ± 0.3 Ma (apatite). All ages decrease northeastward in the direction of hanging wall transport on the Livadi detachment and age-distance relationships yield a slip rate of 2.6 (+3.3 / −1.0) km Ma;−1;. This rate is smaller than a published slip rate of 6.5 km Ma;−1; for the Vari detachment, which is another detachment structurally above the Tinos detachment. Because of the different rates and because published ZFT ages from the footwall of the Vari detachment are ∼10 Ma, we propose that the Vari detachment has to be distinguished from the older Livadi detachment. We discuss various models of how the extensional detachments may have evolved and prefer a scenario in which the Vari detachment cut down into the footwall of the Livadi detachment successively exhuming deeper structural units. The thermochronologic ages demonstrate the importance of quantitative data for constraining localization processes during extensional deformation.

25. Constraining the long-term evolution of the slip rate for a major extensional fault system in the central Aegean, Greece, using thermochronology

Abstract

The brittle/ductile transition is a major rheologic boundary in the crust yet little is known about how or if rates of tectonic processes are influenced by this boundary. In this study we examine the slip history of the large-scale Naxos/Paros extensional fault system (NPEFS), Cyclades, Greece, by comparing published slip rates for the ductile crust with new thermochronological constraints on slip rates in the brittle regime. Based on apatite and zircon fission-track (AFT and ZFT) and (U–Th)/He dating we observe variable slip rates across the brittle/ductile transition on Naxos. ZFT and AFT ages range from 11.8 ± 0.8 to 9.7 ± 0.8 Ma and 11.2 ± 1.6 to 8.2 ± 1.2 Ma and (U–Th)/He zircon and apatite ages are between 10.4 ± 0.4 to 9.2 ± 0.3 Ma and 10.7 ± 1.0 to 8.9 ± 0.6 Ma, respectively. On Paros, ZFT and AFT ages range from 13.1 ± 1.4 Ma to 11.1 ± 1.0 Ma and 12.7 ± 2.8 Ma to 10.5 ± 2.0 Ma while the (U–Th)/He zircon ages are slightly younger between 8.3 ± 0.4 Ma and 9.8 ± 0.3 Ma. All ages consistently decrease northwards in the direction of hanging wall transport. Most of our new thermochronological results and associated thermal modeling more strongly support the scenario of an identical fault dip and a constant or slightly accelerating slip rate of 6–8 km Myr− 1 on the NPEFS across the brittle/ductile transition. Even the intrusion of a large granodiorite body into the narrowing fault zone at 12 Ma on Naxos does not seem to have affected the thermal structure of the area in a way that would significantly disturb the slip rate. The data also show that the NPEFS accomplished a minimum total offset of 50 km between 16 and 8 Ma.

Abstract

We report U–Pb zircon ages of c. 700–550 Ma, 262–220 Ma, 47–38 Ma and 15–14 Ma from amphibolites on Naxos Island in the Aegean extensional province of Greece. The zircon has complex internal structures. Based on cathodoluminescence response, zoning and crosscutting relationships a minimum of four zircon growth stages are identified: inherited core, magmatic core, inner metamorphic (?) rim and an outer metamorphic rim. Trace element compositions of the amphibolites suggest igneous differentiation and crustal assimilation. Zircon solubility as a function of saturation temperatures, Zr content and melt composition indicates that the zircon did not originally crystallize in the mafic bodies but was inherited from felsic precursor rocks, and subsequently assimilated into the mafic intrusives during emplacement. Zircon inheritance is corroborated by the complex, xenocrystic nature of the zircon in one sample. Ages of c. 700–550 Ma and 262–220 Ma are assigned to inherited zircon. Available geochemical data suggest that the 15–14 Ma metamorphic rims grew in situ in the amphibolites, corresponding to a high-grade metamorphic event at this time. However, the geochemical data cannot conclusively establish if the c. 40 Ma zircon rims also grew in situ, or whether they were inherited along with the xenocrystic cores. Two scenarios for emplacement of the mafic intrusives are discussed: (i) Intrusion during late-Triassic to Jurassic ocean basin development of the Aegean realm, in which case the 40 Ma zircon rims would have grown in situ, and (ii) emplacement in the Miocene as a result mafic underplating during large-scale extension. In this case, only the 15–14 Ma metamorphic outer rims would have formed in situ in the amphibolitic host rocks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

30. Contrasting metamorphic evolution of metasedimentary rocks from the Çine and Selimiye nappes in the Anatolide belt, western Turkey

Abstract

P-T conditions, mineral isograds, the relation of the latter to foliation planes and kinematic indicators are used to elucidate the tectonic nature and evolution of a shear zone in an orogen exhumed from midcrustal depths in western Turkey. Furthermore, we discuss whether simple monometamorphic fabrics of rock units from different nappes result from one single orogeny or are related to different orogenies. Metasedimentary rocks from the (dine and Selimiye nappes at the southern rim of the Anatolide belt of western Turkey record different metamorphic evolutions. The Eocene Selimiye shear zone separates both nappes. Metasedimentary rocks from the (dine nappe underneath the Selimiye shear zone record maximum P-T conditions of about 7 kbar and > 550 degreesC. Metasedimentary rocks from the overlying Selimiye nappe have maximum P-T conditions of 4 kbar and c. 525 degreesC near the base of the nappe. Kinematic indicators in both nappes are related to movement on the Selimiye shear zone and consistently show a top-S shear sense. Metamorphic grade in the Selimiye nappe decreases structurally upwards as indicated by mineral isograds defining the garnet-chlorite zone at the base, the chloritoidbiotite zone and the biotite-chlorite zone at the top of the nappe. The mineral isograds in the Selimiye nappe run parallel to the regional S-R foliation, parallel the Selimiye shear zone and indicate that the Selimiye shear zone formed during this prograde greenschist to lower amphibolite facies metamorphic event but remained active after the peak of metamorphism. Ar-40/Ar-39 mica ages and the tectonometamorphic relationship with the Eocene Cyclades-Menderes thrust, which occurs above the Selimiye nappe in the study area, suggests an Eocene age of metamorphism in the Selimiye nappe.

31. Deformed A-type granites in northern Malawi, east-central Africa: pre- or syntectonic

Abstract

Metamorphosed and deformed A-type granites ranging in age from 1087 to 1119 Ma occur in strike-slip and reverse-slip shear zones of the Ubendian and Irumide belts of northern Malawi. Peak metamorphic conditions in the granites and their wallrocks reached about 12-13 kbar and 680-740[degrees]C. Microstructures reveal that the granites experienced a seemingly progressive deformation from magmatic to solid state. Magmatic deformation is manifested by the coexistence of aligned magmatic potassium feldspar, plagioclase, amphibole, biotite and ilmenite with undeformed quartz and schlieren structures. High-temperature solid-state deformation is characterized by widespread grain-boundary migration, dynamic recrystallization and myrmekitic potassium feldspar replacement. The tectonic foliation is generally subparallel to the magmatic foliation in the granites and also subparallel to the borders of the plutons and to the foliation in the wallrock. Kinematic indicators in both granite and wallrock reveal sinistral movement in the Ubendian-belt shear zones and top-to-the-ESE thrusting in the Irumide-belt shear zones. The overall parallelism of magmatic and tectonic foliations would suggest syntectonic emplacement of the granites with respect to a c. 1100 Ma Irumide orogeny. However, similar deformation patterns of granite-related dykes and some Pan-African pegmatites and geochronologic work suggests that the first deformation of the granites, their related dykes and some of the pegmatites occurred during the Pan-African orogeny. This study implies that a purely structural approach to distinguish syn- and pretectonic granites is rendered difficult when post-emplacement deformation occurred under high-grade metamorphic conditions. Strongly heterogeneous deformation with a pronounced degree of coaxial flattening in the granites allows magmatic structures to be preserved in low-strain zones and to be passively rotated into parallelism with penetrative deformation structures. 43. Kinematics of the Alpine plate-margin: structural styles, strain and motion along the Penninic-Austroalpine boundary in the Swiss-Austrian Alps

Abstract

A structural and kinematic analysis of parts of the Alpine suture zone, i.e. the Arosa Zone and the edges of the overlying Austroalpine and underlying Penninic units, is presented. The Arosa Zone is interpreted as part of an accretionary wedge formed by the overriding of the Austroalpine units, the northern part of the Adriatic plate, over the Penninic units. Structures, strain and stretching trajectories indicate that two main deformation events followed each other discontinuously. The earlier event was a WSW- to NW-directed thrusting under noncoaxial deformation and led to melange-type structures. The second event, less penetrative in the Arosa Zone and with a downward increase in strain and noncoaxial flow, formed N- to NE-verging folds and imbrication zones. West-directed displacement commenced in the Early Cretaceous and the motion changed to a prevailing northerly direction during the Eocene, as revealed by sediments involved in thrusting and by radiometric dating of the mylonites.
The kinematic history deduced from structural analysis agrees with the history obtained by recent work on plate margin sediments. We correlate the anticlockwise rotation of the Adriatic plate relative to Europe between about 130 and 60 Ma with the west-directed motion in the Arosa Zone. A change to relative N-S motion during the Lower Tertiary led to the N to NE directed displacements. A direct relationship thus exists between the motion of the Adriatic plate and the resulting deformation along its northern margin during the early history of the Eastern Alps.
Partitioning in brittle and ductile deformation and structural slicing under noncoaxial deformation is responsible for the melange-type structures.
