Abstract

Purpose: During the last decade, the establishment of distribution systems in cities has attracted an increased interest in the society as well as in academia. City-logistic implies distribution of goods critical to the everyday life in a flexible urban environment with regard to public- and industrial stakeholder interests. Based on different stakeholder interests, there is a standing need to evaluate the use of public space (PS) an urban environment. Yet, there is still an uncertainty about stakeholder interests as well as stakeholders rights to influence the use of PS in the urban environment. The purpose of this paper is to present a conceptual framework to evaluate the use of PS with regard to stakeholder interests. Research Approach: A literature review of published research on city-logistics was conducted to create a framework for evaluation interests in PS. The conceptual framework includes the use of PS in urban environment. Based on the presented conceptual framework, stakeholder interests and rights to influence the usage of PS in an urban environment have been evaluated based on empirical data from a single in-depth case study of a Swedish city. Empirical data from participant observations and a survey questionnaire were used as empirical evidence in the evaluation. Findings and Originality: The findings illustrate evaluation of stakeholder interests and rights to influence the use of PS in an urban environment. Main findings include enhanced understanding of different stakeholder interests. The paper contributes to the understanding of an issue is been important in implementing city-logistics, but still not much addressed in published logistics literature: the use of PS. The combination of published research on city-logistics, and analysis of different stakeholder's interests and rights to influence the use of PS provides interesting insight from which further research can be developed to enrich theory and management of city-logistics. 10. Logistic management of trailers based on the EPCIS standard: A cross-case analysis

Abstract

The efficient management of logistic operations at port terminals is vital in developing global competition and trade and distributing cargo across geographical borders. The application of standardized approaches improves the efficiency of logistic operations. This paper presents a conceptual framework based on the international Electronic Product Code Information Services (EPCIS) standard for analyzing the efficiency of logistic operations at port terminals. The paper contributes to the field by studying logistic operations efficiency in the management of trailers based on an international standard. The literature was reviewed to establish a conceptual framework. Then, a case study was conducted regarding logistic operations in the export and import of trailers, as well as transshipments of cargo between trailers, at two port terminals in the United Kingdom and one port terminal in the Netherlands. The findings show that by adopting the EPCIS standard, port operators can improve logistic management efficiency, including the arriving, transporting, receiving, inspecting, outbound staging, loading, picking-up, unloading, re-packing, and shipping operations of trailers. This paper identifies how, when managing trailers at port terminals, applying a conceptual framework based on an international standard can improve logistical efficiency so that this management is consistent with the development of a global standard used to enhance planning, traceability, and safety in the port sector.

11. An electronic traceability system based on EPCIS standard: Pilot study

Abstract

Within the eTrace project to develop and evaluate an electronic traceability system,a pilot test was performed in Sweden to test an EPCIS-based traceability system to track product through the cod fish value chain. The pilot was conducted successfully from 17th – 21st May, 2010 in Simrishamn, Sweden. The crates containing raw fish and fish fillets labeled with RFID tags were read using handheld scanners as they moved through the value chain from catch to the retailer. The information related to each finished product was linked back to a particular Catch location, landing site and processing location. This information was uploaded to the EPCIS repository and was available to the value chain stakeholders through a web based interface. This system enabled efficient tracking of fish and electronic information exchange throughout the value chain. An increase in cod sale in the retail store was also observed and was attributed to the traceability information displayed next to the product for the retail customers. Innovation Norway

Abstract

Traceability in food supply chains has received increased attention in the last decade. The efforts of governmental authorities have also increased to regulate and control food supply chains and product characteristics related to information to ensure safety, quality, and preservation of living resources. Previous studies in the area take an industrial focus and exclude the governmental authority focus. This thesis thus focuses on exploring governmental authority and industrial effects on traceability in food supply chains. The purpose is to extend the traceability capabilities in food supply chains that are influenced by governmental authorities. The thesis reports findings from literature reviews and case studies that investigated three research questions. The first question embraces different perspectives of food supply chain traceability in supply chain management (SCM) literature, as well as the science theoretical perspective of food supply chain traceability. The second question explores modelling techniques for mapping food supply chains based on two dimensional flows of information between a governmental authority and actors, and of the flows of physical goods in three fresh food supply chains. The third question concerns the effects on operational activities and traceability information in fresh food supply chains by implementing the RFID based smart goods concept. The results show that food supply chain traceability is a multidisciplinary concept which is important for governmental authorities. Supply chain management techniques for mapping descriptive information flows and for capturing information in supply chains are applicable to improve traceability in fresh food supply chains. The thesis further examines the influence of traceability on operational activities in food supply chains. The results presented contribute to the understanding of traceability in food supply chains affected by governmental regulations from a managerial point of view. This is useful for authorities and industrial firms in the food industry as well as for academia, since it shows that food supply chain traceability should be prioritised to influence future supply chain traceability setups and theoretical development of the research area.

15. Effects on logistic operations from RFID- and EPCIS-enabled traceability.

Abstract

Purpose – The paper aims to explore the potential effects on logistic operations of implementing the Electronic Product Code Information Service (EPCIS) standard and radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to enable food traceability. A conceptual model for analysing supply chains according to EPCIS standard is also presented. Design/methodology/approach – A literature review was conducted to establish a theoretical framework. A case study of a Swedish fresh fish supply chain was then carried out. Findings – Implementation of the EPCIS standard and RFID technology to enable food traceability potentially affects the following logistic operations activities: identification, monitoring, labelling, goods handling, reporting of production, identification costs and revenue changes due to sales of goods. The conceptual model was used to analyse the effects. Research limitations/implications – The paper contributes to logistic research by studying the implementation of RFID technology and information standards to comply with food traceability requirements. The research is limited to fish supply chains; other sectors and supply chains need to be investigated for further generalisation of the results. Practical implications – Regulatory requirements on food traceability stipulate the implementation of food traceability systems, placing the responsibility on companies by authorities. The research presented can support managers in understanding the potential effects of implementing such systems. Originality/value – The discussion about logistics and food traceability has in part revolved around implementation of RFID technology and standardised approaches for handling information to preserve food quality and safety.
