Für die spätneolithische Wartberg-Gruppe in Mitteldeutschland liegen nur wenige Siedlungsbefunde vor, die bei einer überwiegend schlechten Erhaltung zudem mehrfach unzureichend publiziert sind. Für eine Neubewertung der befestigten Flachlandsiedlung bei Wittelsberg und der hier auftretenden Grubenhäuser werden vorab die bisher bekannten Haus- und Siedlungsbefunde anhand der publizierten Informationen und ausgewählter Archivalien zusammengestellt. Der Beitrag wird ergänzt durch Tierknochenanalysen an dem kleinen Bestand von Wittelsberg, Fpl. 7., Offa, 78 (2021)

Die diachrone quantitative Analyse des Hausbaus des Mittelgebirgsraums vom Frühneolithikum bis in die frühe Bronzezeit an diversen konstruktiven Merkmalen zeigt Entwicklungen und Brüche. Hierbei werden bekannte Entwicklungen aus dem Früh- und Mittelneolithikum mit aktuellen Erkenntnissen anhand neuer Befunden zum Spät- und Endneolithikum verbunden. Neben der oft verwendeten Hausgröße werden die Pfostenfläche und die Proportion zur Hausfläche als besonders deskriptive Merkmale des Wandels herausgestellt. Im Detail lassen sich hierdurch Wege von Innovationen nachzeichnen und anhand der möglichen Vorbilder die fehlenden Hausbauten des Spätneolithikums umreißen., Journal of Neolithic Archaeology, 24 (2022)

Trotz jahrelanger, intensiver Forschung ist es bisher nicht gelungen, die Morbidität und Mortalität der aneurysmatischen Subarachnoidalblutung (SAB) signifikant zu senken. Der Fokus dieser Bemühungen lag in den letzten Jahrzehnten vor allem auf der frühen Erkennung und Behandlung des verzögert, typischerweise zwischen Tag 4 und 14 auftretenden, symptomatischen Vasospasmus´ und somit einer zerebralen Ischämie, die mit einer höheren Rate an klinischen Komplikationen, reduzierter Alltagsaktivität, schlechterer kognitiver Leistungsfähigkeit und einer insgesamt höheren Mortalität einhergeht sowie mit einem insgesamt schlechteren neurologischen Outcome assoziiert ist. Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich per Tierexperiment mit der Akutphase der SAB und zweier möglicher Therapiestrategien (Hyper-HES und Hypothermie), die möglichst früh im Verlauf angewendet werden und für eine histologisch sowie neurologisch nachweisbare Verbesserung im Gesamtergebnis sorgen können. Insgesamt entsprechen sowohl die osmotischwirksame Therapie mit Hydroxyethylstärke als auch die hypotherme Therapie nach unseren Resultaten der primären Zielsetzung der Studie. Die Möglichkeit einer prinzipiell überall verfügbaren, kostengünstigen und gut steuerbaren Frühphasentherapie nach SAB ohne Kompromittierung der initialen Diagnostik und der klinischen Differentialdiagnosen scheint hier jeweils gegeben zu sein., Despite years of intensive research, morbidity and mortality from aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) was not significantly lowered. The focus of these efforts in recent decades has been primarily on the early detection and treatment of the delayed, typically between day 4 and 14, symptomatic vasospasm and thus cerebral ischemia which is associated with a higher rate of clinical complications, reduced daily activity, worse cognitive performance and overall higher mortality and associated with an overall poorer neurological outcome. This work deals with the acute phase of SAH and two possible therapy strategies (hyper-HES and hypothermia) which are used as early as possible in the course of an animal experiment and can result in a histologically and neurologically demonstrable improvement in the overall result. Overall, both the osmotically effective therapy with hydroxyethyl starch as well as the hypothermic therapy correspond to our results and the primary objective of the study. The possibility of an early-stage therapy after SAH that is available in principle everywhere, is inexpensiv and can be easily controlled without compromising the initial diagnosis and the clinical differential diagnoses seems to be given here.

The re-analyses of the Altendorf gallery grave reveal three different phases of inhumation burial practices: collective burials of a whole community (3250–3100 BC), a hiatus in burial practice (3100–2600 BC), and fewer but continuous single inhumations (2600–1450 BC). These changes can be associated with the abandonment of collective social practices all over Central Europe at the end of the fourth millennium BC, and the establishment of new ideologies and the re-use of older monuments by 2600 BC. In light of the current interest in climate change and its effects on modern economies, several projects have highlighted the role of climate forcing on past societies. In particular, there has been focus on the role of climate forcing in the Iberian Peninsula, during the 4.2 k event, which roughly coincides with the Chalcolithic to Bronze Age transition (c. 2200–2000 BCE). While much of this research has focused on the South-eastern regions, given its long and rich history of archaeological research, some attention has shifted to the Southwest Iberia, which has revealed in recent years a clearer picture of its societies during the Chalcolithic period. More specifically, Southwest Iberia has disclosed very interesting social dynamics when it comes to ditched-enclosure sites, dynamics that came to a rather abrupt end around the same time of the 4.2 k event. The current paper reports the results of the 2018 geomagnetic survey campaign at the ditched-enclosure site of Monte da Contenda, in Arronches, Portugal. While these results are not directly related to climate forcing per se, they do provide more insight into the Chalcolithic communities that could have been directly affected by climate events. Whereas the first campaign, in 2013, revealed a very complex ditch system but was unable to expose the site’s full layout, the 2018 campaign was able to reveal the site’s ditch systems in their entirety. Many of the assumptions established in the first campaign concerning the layout of the site were confirmed during this second campaign, namely that the ditch system is delimited to the south by the ribeira das Argamassas and that the site contains two distinct ditch systems, comprising a total of 17 to 19 ditches, establishing Monte da Contenda as the site with the highest number of ditches currently known in Portugal., Journal of Neolithic Archaeology, Vol. 21 (2019)

The end of the third millennium BCE represents (not only) on the Iberian Peninsula the time of transition to the Bronze Age. At the same time this is the time of a general climatic event, the so-called 4.2 ka BP event, which can be observed (in different manifestations) in different regions of the northern hemisphere. By synchronizing cultural and climatic developments and above all by assessing demographic developments and their spatial development, a much-discussed connection between the two phenomena can be made plausible and opens the perspective for further, more detailed research on the interdependence between cultural, demographic and climatological processes. For this purpose, the results of aoristics, 14C sum calibration and the evaluation of the concentration of long-chain n-alkane homologues of terrestrial origin as precipitation predictor are combined, their correlation is presented and possible responses are interpreted from the mapping of the settlement system development. Since 2009, a Priority Program of the German Research Foundation (DFG) deals with the Funnel Beaker Period in Northern Germany, focussing, in a holistic approach, on the conjunction of social structures and the erection of monuments. To this end, evidence for subsistence patterns, social organisation, communication and networks are considered in a diachronic perspective. Spatial structures and chronologies are re-evaluated and adjusted in the light of new excavation results, scientific data and statistical analysis, environmental and economic data are presented and discussed. Several new fieldwork projects are introduced, and their results are combined into the frame of an overall picture of Funnel Beaker societies which are to be described as a complex mosaic of regionally diverse patterns, different sequences of temporal change and distinct spheres of social interaction. Finally, a discussion of the role of monuments in social reproduction together with considerations towards demographic trends leads to a model of social change reaching from cooperative actions to collective dictions of individual social roles and a rise of social inequalities.

In order to understand the dynamics of cultural phenomena, scientific dating in archaeology is an increasingly indispensable tool. Only by dating independently of typology is it possible to understand typological development itself (Müller 2004). Here radiometric dating methods, especially those based on carbon isotopy, still play the most important role. For evaluations exceeding the intra-site level, it is particularly important that such data is collected in large numbers and that the dates are easily accessible. Also, new statistical analyses, such as sequential calibration based on Bayesian methods, do not require single dates, but rather demand a greater number. By their combination significantly more elaborate results can be achieved compared to the results from conventional evaluation (e. g. Whittle et al. 2011). A second premise of RADON is that of „Open Access“. This approach continues to be applied in the international research community, which we welcome as a highly positive development. The radiocarbon database RADON has been committed to this principle for more than 12 years. In this database 14C data – primarily of the Neolithic of Central Europe and Southern Scandinavia – is collected and successively augmented.

The hepatitis B virus (HBV) is one of the most widespread human pathogens known today, yet its origin and evolutionary history are still unclear and controversial. Here, we report the analysis of three ancient HBV genomes recovered from human skeletons found at three different archaeological sites in Germany. We reconstructed two Neolithic and one medieval HBV genomes by assembly from shotgun DNA sequencing data. Additionally, we observed HBV-specific peptides using paleo-proteomics. Our results show that HBV circulates in the European population for at least 7000 years. The Neolithic HBV genomes show a high genomic similarity to each other. In a phylogenetic network, they do not group with any human-associated HBV genome and are most closely related to those infecting African non-human primates. These ancient virus forms appear to represent distinct lineages that have no close relatives today and possibly went extinct. Our results reveal the great potential of ancient DNA from human skeletons in order to study the long-time evolution of blood borne viruses.
