Background In several species, paraoxonase‐1 (PON‐1) decreases during inflammation, because of the presence of oxidative stress; its measurement recently has been validated in horses, but its role as a clinical biomarker is unknown. Objectives To evaluate sensitivity, specificity and likelihood ratio of PON‐1 activity to identify systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS)‐positive horses or horses with a poor prognosis. Animals One hundred seventy‐two blood samples from 58 sick horses from 3 different veterinary hospitals. Methods In a cross‐sectional study, PON‐1 activity was measured upon admission and at 24‐hour intervals until discharge or death, and results were analyzed based on SIRS status and outcome. Results No statistically significant difference was found in median PON‐1 activity between SIRS and non‐SIRS cases or between survivors and non‐survivors except for mares, in which PON‐1 activity was significantly lower in SIRS‐positive horses (P = .05). The sensitivity of PON‐1 activity in identifying horses with SIRS or negative outcome was low (0.0%‐46.2% depending on the examined group) but its specificity was high (87.0%‐100.0%). However, when PON‐1 is low, the likelihood of death is 2.40‐3.89 times higher than the likelihood of survival. Repeated measurement of PON‐1 after treatment does not predict outcome. Conclusions and Clinical Importance Evaluation of PON‐1 activity in horses with inflammation might be advisable in the future, but only low activity at admission may be relevant in predicting SIRS or negative outcome.

During cystoscopy, performed with air insufflation in a standing Argentinian gelding, the horse showed ataxia and fell to the ground with generalised muscular twitching and horizontal nystagmus, tachypnoea and tachyarrhythmia. General anaesthesia was induced. Arterial blood gas-analysis before induction of anaesthesia revealed an increased pH, decreased partial pressure of carbon dioxide and decreased partial pressure of oxygen. Venous air embolism was suspected.

Rib fractures occur most commonly in foals born after dystocia, secondary to natural or iatrogenic trauma, especially in primiparous mares. The cause of thoracic trauma may be focal pressure on the thorax during passage of the foal through the pelvic canal. The surgical treatment for rib fracture repair has been considered by few papers. The purpose of this study was to describe a method, easy to perform and as useful as other techniques, that can provide a stable fixation of fractured ribs, using a tension device that counteracts tension and bending forces.

Obiettivo: capire la relazione che intercorre tra le coliche del cavallo e le parassitosi intestinali, quindi capire l’effettiva rilevanza clinica delle infezioni parassitarie. Tipo di studio: studio clinico-chirurgico e parassitologico. Metodi: in questo studio sono stati presi in esame 92 cavalli afferiti presso il servizio SARGA del Dipartimento di Scienze Mediche Veterinarie durante gli anni 2009-2011. 27 di questi soggetti sono stati sottoposti a laparotomia esplorativa per colica, 22 avevano una colica che si è risolta con terapia medica, sono stati 43 i cavalli afferiti presso il servizio per patologie diverse dall’addome acuto. I cavalli da cui è stato possibile prelevare un’adeguato quantitativo di feci (# 86) sono stati sottoposti ad esami coprologici, qualitativi e quantitativi. I dati ottenuti sono stati sottoposti ad analisi statistica descrittiva, al test del Chi quadrato e al test di Kuskall-Wallis rispettivamente per le prevalenze e i dati quantitativi, oltre ad una regressione logistica per evidenziare i fattori di rischio. Dai cavalli sottoposti a celiotomia è stato prelevato il contenuto intestinale per la raccolta dei parassiti adulti. Risultati: la prevalenza e l’abbondanza degli strongili è risultata significativamente minore nei cavalli sottoposti a chirurgia addominale rispetto al totale della popolazione presa in esame. Differenze significative di prevalenza sono state evidenziate anche tra i cavalli in colica medica e chirurgica. L’unico fattore di rischio evidenziato dall’analisi di regressione logistica è rappresentato dall’età per le sole coliche trattate chirurgicamente. Né strongili né ascaridi sembrano aumentare il rischio di colica. La probabilità di decesso aumenta significativamente in caso di colica chirurgica ma non è influenzata in alcun modo dalle infezioni parassitarie., Aim: Understanding the relationship between colic and intestinal parasites in horses, and the clinical significance of parasite infections. The data obtained were statistically summarized; Chi-square test and Kruskall-Wallis test for prevalence and abundance data, respectively, were then performed; logistic regression was used to highlight possible risk factors. Bowel content was collected for adult parasite collection from horses undergone exploratory celiotomy. Results: strongyles have significantly lower prevalence and intensity in horses undergoing abdominal surgery compared to the total examined population. Difference in prevalence was observed between horses treated with medical and surgical terapy. The only risk factor highlighted with logistic regression is represented by the age for colic surgically treated . Neither strongyles or ascarid seem to increase the risk of colic. The chance of death increases significantly in case of surgical colic but it is not related with parasite infections.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of treatment of single injection of autologous platelet rich plasma (PRP) in suspensory ligament lesions in horses. The results obtained in this clinical trial are encouraging. Seven of the 10 treated horses have had a positive outcome with a 12 months follow up. The 3 horses with a negative outcome were all trotters, affected in hind limbs. This result might have a correlation both with the discipline itself and with the management and training of such horses, which are often put back into competition with an urgency potentially undermining a complete recovery. In this study were considered only horses treated with a single application of PRP, which was demonstrated to be effective on rats (Virchenko & Aspengerg, 2006) and that has here shown a satisfactory outcome. In this report we included only the horses in which it was considered, based on an ultrasonographic evidence, that multiple injections might even cause a damage to the fibrils in shaping. Until more consistent data become available, it is possible to state that the treatment of suspensory ligament lesion with PRP seems to be effective, uneventful, cheap and easy, and able to accelerate and improve the quality of the heal, thus it should strongly be considered for these injuries in sport horses.

Il problema legato alla tecnica da adottare per la chiusura delle ferite chirurgiche addominali rimane di attualità sia in medicina umana che veterinaria, come testimoniato da recenti rassegne o studi statistici (2, 5, 6). In particolare, a partire dalla fine degli anni ’80 la sutura di tipo continuo è stata riconosciuta come metodo di elezione per la chiusura dell’addome nel cavallo, così come anche in altre specie compreso l’uomo, sulla base di lavori sperimentali (7) e risultati di studi clinici (8, 9). Scopo di questo studio è quello di presentare la nostra casistica clinica relativamente alle problematiche di guarigione della ferita chirurgica celiotomica di cavalli adulti operati per chirurgia addominale, con chiusura della parete addominale secondo una procedura che prevede una sutura interrotta sulla linea alba.
