The vertically integrated zonal momentum balance of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) is dominated by wind stress at the surface and topographic form stress (TFS) at the bottom. It has been argued that wind stress is transferred from the surface to the bottom by transient baroclinic eddies, via interfacial form stress, to establish the balance between wind stress and TFS. However, ocean models indicate TFS responds rapidly to changes in wind stress, suggesting that barotropic processes play a role in this balance. We investigate the dynamics governing the wind–TFS balance of the ACC and its response to wind using an idealized, wind- and buoyancy-driven channel model. We show that the balance is established and maintained at equilibrium by the barotropic dynamics. The balance results from the continuity of the flow, in which the Ekman transport at the surface, balanced by wind stress, is compensated by a return flow at depth, balanced by TFS. This leads to a match between wind stress and TFS which is independent of momentum stresses in the interior. Transient baroclinic eddies oppose the wind-driven isopycnal steepening via eddy buoyancy fluxes, which act to flatten the isopycnals. The eddy-driven isopycnal flattening corresponds to a reduction in the zonal geostrophic shear and thus a redistribution of the zonal momentum in the interior via eddy momentum stresses. The maintenance of the vertically integrated ACC momentum balance by the barotropic dynamics explains the fast response of the wind–TFS balance to changes in wind forcing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Standing meanders along the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) have been shown to be regions of elevated eddy variability, meridional heat transport, and vertical exchange. In this study, we investigate the influence of a standing meander south of Australia on air‐sea heat fluxes, upper ocean structure, and subduction in the 1/10° ACCESS‐OM2 ocean‐sea ice model forced by the JRA55 atmospheric reanalysis. We track the model's Subantarctic and Polar Fronts based on their jet and water mass structure, and produce composites of thermodynamical and dynamical properties of the meander in relaxed and flexed states. The standing meander induces trough‐to‐crest variations in surface heat flux, mixed layer depth (MLD), wind stress curl, vertical velocity, and subduction. At the crests, the ocean loses heat and the mixed layer is deeper; at the troughs, the ocean gains heat and the mixed layer is shallower. Wind stress curl, vertical velocity, and subduction change sign on entering and exiting crests and troughs. Vertical velocity due to the curvature of the meander is an order of magnitude larger than Ekman vertical velocity. The poleward excursion of Polar Front meander crests extends subduction to Antarctic Intermediate Water density classes. Finally, flexing of the meander enhances both air‐sea exchange and vertical velocity. The results show that standing meanders of the ACC influence the distribution and magnitude of air‐sea fluxes of heat and momentum and exchange between the surface and interior ocean. The research clarifies how meandering of ocean currents shapes air‐sea interaction and the transfer of surface ocean properties into the ocean interior in the ACC south of Australia. Meanders refer to curved patterns in the ACC's flow. We track specific ACC features and look at what is different inside and outside the meander in a computer model. We find that ocean meanders shape where the Southern Ocean gains and loses heat. These changes in heat exchange shape the mixed layer depth (MLD) in the ocean. The MLD is important for climate, biology productivity, and absorption of heat and carbon by the ocean. Meandering produces stronger vertical motion and increases sinking of water from the surface into the ocean interior, compared to regions where meanders are not present. When the meander flexes and becomes more curved, the vertical motion and atmosphere‐ocean exchange become even stronger. The results show that small‐scale patterns in ocean flow can have a strong influence on the atmosphere, with implications for climate and ocean circulation. These patterns are not well represented in climate models and our study is a step toward accounting for their absence. The long‐held view that the East Antarctic margin is isolated from warm offshore waters has been challenged by recent observations showing incursions of warm modified Circumpolar Deep Water (mCDW) reaching several East Antarctic ice shelves. However, large areas of the East Antarctic continental shelf remain poorly observed, making it challenging to determine if the supply of oceanic heat to the ice shelves is changing. Here, we use temperature and salinity profiles to the west of the Shackleton Ice Shelf (SIS; ≈100°E) spanning 60 years to assess the variability of the water masses in the context of a changing climate. We document warming and freshening of shelf waters. Prior to 1996, cold mCDW water (θ < −1.6°C) was found below the surface mixed layer and cold Dense Shelf Water (DSW) with a salinity of >34.5 dominated the water column. After 2010, warm mCDW (≥−1.0°C) was widespread over the continental shelf and DSW with salinity over 34.5 was no longer present. The mixing ratio of glacial meltwater indicates that warm mCDW observed in 2011 caused basal melting of the SIS, possibly reducing the salinity of DSW. Increased access of warm waters to the continental shelf may have also occurred on the eastern side of the ice shelf, where glaciological evidence shows the grounding line has retreated. These observations suggest a shift occurred prior to 2011 that has increased the ocean heat supply to the continental shelf and to the SIS, increasing basal melt and reducing DSW formation. Plain Language Summary: Recently, relatively warm waters that are normally found offshore are coming onto the Antarctic continental shelves, threatening the stability of East Antarctic ice shelves. The process, known as an "intrusion," is mostly reported in West Antarctica. Yet, recent studies have documented similar warm water intrusions in East Antarctica. East Antarctica contains more ice mass than West Antarctica and thus, its potential contributions to sea level rise are also higher. It is not known if these intrusions have always happened, or if they started at a particular point in time. Much less is known about what mechanisms make them happen. This study shows warm water intrusions reach the Shackleton Ice Shelf from 2011 onwards. The intrusions melt the ice shelf from below and the freshwater resulting from this melt goes into the ocean and freshens it. It also increases the stratification of the water column, making it harder for polynyas, massive open ocean areas that form next to the Antarctic margins during the Austral winter, to produce an important dense water variety that supplies the bottom layer of the world ocean's circulation. There is good correspondence between Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) front locations derived from temperatures sampled in the upper 150m along the penguin tracks and front positions inferred using maps of sea surface height (SSH). Mesoscale features detected in the SSH maps from this eddy-rich region are also reproduced in the individual temperature sections based on dive data. The foraging strategy of Macquarie Island king penguins appears to be influenced strongly by oceanographic structure: almost all the penguin dives are confined to the region close to and between the northern and southern branches of the Polar Front. Surface chlorophyll distributions also reflect the influence of the ACC fronts, with the northern branch of the Polar Front marking a boundary between low surface chlorophyll to the north and elevated values to the south.
