Abstract

The generalized Allen-Cahn equation, \[ u_t=\varepsilon^2(D(u)u_x)_x-\frac{\varepsilon^2}2D'(u)u_x^2-F'(u), \] with nonlinear diffusion, $D = D(u)$, and potential, $F = F(u)$, of the form \[ D(u) = |1-u^2|^{m}, \quad \text{or} \quad D(u) = |1-u|^{m}, \quad m >1, \] and \[ F(u)=\frac{1}{2n}|1-u^2|^{n}, \qquad n\geq2, \] respectively, is studied. These choices correspond to a reaction function that can be derived from a double well potential, and to a generalized degenerate diffusivity coefficient depending on the density $u$ that vanishes at one or at the two wells, $u = \pm 1$. It is shown that interface layer solutions that are equal to $\pm 1$ except at a finite number of thin transitions of width $\varepsilon$ persist for an either exponentially or algebraically long time, depending upon the interplay between the exponents $n$ and $m$. Abstract

Microbial fuel cells implemented in constructed wetlands (CW-MFCs), albeit a relatively new technology still under study, have shown to improve treatment efficiency of urban wastewater. So far the vast majority of CW-MFC systems investigated were designed as lab-scale systems working under rather unrealistic hydraulic conditions using synthetic wastewater. The main objective of this work was to quantify CW-MFCs performance operated under different conditions in a more realistic setup using meso-scale systems with horizontal flow fed with real urban wastewater. Operational conditions tested were organic loading rate (4.9+-1.6, 6.7+-1.4 and 13.6+-3.2 g COD/m2.day) and hydraulic regime (continuous vs intermittent feeding) as well as different electrical connections: CW control (conventional CW without electrodes), open-circuit CW-MFC (external circuit between anode and cathode not connected) and closed-circuit CW-MFC (external circuit connected). Eight horizontal subsurface flow CWs were operated for about four months. Each wetland consisted of a PVC reservoir of 0.193 m2 filled with 4/8 mm granitic riverine gravel. All wetlands had intermediate sampling points for gravel and interstitial liquid sampling. The CW-MFCs were designed as three MFCs incorporated one after the other along the flow path of the CWs. Results showed no significant differences between tested organic loading rates, hydraulic regimes or electrical connections, however, on average, systems operated in closed-circuit CW-MFC mode under continuous flow outperformed the other experimental conditions. Closed-circuit CW-MFC compared to conventional CW control systems showed around 5% and 22% higher COD and ammonium removal, respectively. Correspondingly, overall bacteria activity, as measured by the fluorescein diacetate technique, was higher (4% to 34%) in closed-circuit systems when compared to CW control systems., Comment: 39 pages, 8 Figures

Abstract

Burkina Faso livestock feeding is characterized by a hot dry season fodder deficit, which affects animal performance and causes economic losses. To overcome this challenge, improving quality fodder production through the use of dual-purpose crops is a potential alternative. Hence, this study aimed at testing dual-purpose cultivars of sorghum and cowpea under monoculture and intercropping in the North Sudan zone in Burkina Faso. To do this, a “Mother and Baby trials” approach was adopted. The mother trial was designed as a randomized complete block with eight treatments (combinations of monoculture and intercropping systems for two cowpeas and two sorghum cultivars) and four replications during two cropping seasons (2019 and 2020) at the INERA research station in Saria. The on-farm “baby” trials involved 30 farmers during two cropping seasons (2019 and 2020) in four communes: Koudougou, Poa, Nandiala, and Kokologo. Data were collected on weed biomass and density, fodder biomass and grain yield, intercropping efficiency, and fodder nutritive value. The results of the mother trial showed that intercropping significantly (p ≤ 0.05) reduced weed density and weed biomass. Sorghum cultivar Ponta Negra had the highest fodder biomass yield (10.05 kg DM/ha) while sorghum Sariaso16 had the highest grain yield (4.42 kg/ha). Cowpea cultivar KVx745-11P had greater fodder biomass (4.72 kg DM/ha) than Tiligré (3.28 kg DM/ha) with similar grain yield (2.17 and 2.17 kg/ha). Intercropping was the most efficient land-use cropping system for fodder biomass and grain yield improvement both in mother and baby trials. For fodder nutritive value, cultivars Sariaso16 and Ponta Negra had similar crude protein concentrations (ranging from 4.1 to 5.4%), and cowpea cultivar KVx745-11P haulms had greater crude protein (ranging from 16.9 to 20.3%). The use of Ponta Negra and KVx745-11P and Sariaso16 and KVx745-11P under intercropping is likely to optimize grain and quality fodder production for crop-livestock farmers in the North Sudan zone.

Abstract

This paper establishes the spectral stability of monotone traveling front solutions for reaction-diffusion equations where the reaction function is of Nagumo (or bistable) type and with diffusivities which are density dependent and degenerate at zero (one of the equilibrium points of the reaction). Spectral stability is understood as the property that the spectrum of the linearized operator around the wave, acting on an exponentially weighted space, is contained in the complex half plane with non-positive real part. Three different types of monotone waves are studied: (i) stationary diffusion-degenerate fronts, connecting the two stable equilibria of the reaction; (ii) traveling diffusion-degenerate fronts connecting zero with the unstable equilibrium; and, (iii) non-degenerate fronts. In the first two cases, the degeneracy is responsible of the loss of hyperbolicity of the asymptotic coefficient matrices of the spectral problem at one of the end points, precluding the application of standard techniques to locate the essential spectrum. This difficulty is overcome with a suitable partition of the spectrum, a generalized convergence of operators technique, the analysis of singular (or Weyl) sequences and the use of energy estimates. The monotonicity of the fronts, as well as detailed descriptions of the decay structure of eigenfunctions on a case by case basis, are key ingredients to show that all traveling fronts under consideration are spectrally stable in a suitably chosen exponentially weighted $L^2$ energy space., Comment: 34 pages, 1 figures

Holographic codes grown with perfect tensors on regular hyperbolic tessellations using an inflation rule protect quantum information stored in the bulk from errors on the boundary provided the code rate is less than one. Hyperbolic geometry bounds the holographic code rate and guarantees quantum error correction for codes grown with any inflation rule on all regular hyperbolic tessellations in a class whose size grows exponentially with the rank of the perfect tensors for rank five and higher. Abstract

ObjectivesThis study aimed at re-evaluating the strength and shape of the dose-response relationship between the combined (or joint) effect of intensity and duration of cigarette smoking and the risk of head and neck cancer (HNC). We explored this issue considering bivariate spline models, where smoking intensity and duration were treated as interacting continuous exposures.Materials and methodsWe pooled individual-level data from 33 case-control studies (18,260 HNC cases and 29,844 controls) participating in the International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology (INHANCE) consortium. In bivariate regression spline models, exposures to cigarette smoking intensity and duration (compared with never smokers) were modeled as a linear piecewise function within a logistic regression also including potential confounders. We jointly estimated the optimal knot locations and regression parameters within the Bayesian framework.ResultsFor oral-cavity/pharyngeal (OCP) cancers, an odds ratio (OR) >5 was reached after 30 years in current smokers of ∼20 or more cigarettes/day. Patterns of OCP cancer risk in current smokers differed across strata of alcohol intensity. For laryngeal cancer, ORs >20 were found for current smokers of ≥20 cigarettes/day for ≥30  years. In former smokers who quit ≥10  years ago, the ORs were approximately halved for OCP cancers, and ∼1/3 for laryngeal cancer, as compared to the same levels of intensity and duration in current smokers.ConclusionReferring to bivariate spline models, this study better quantified the joint effect of intensity and duration of cigarette smoking on HNC risk, further stressing the need of smoking cessation policies.

Reconstructing the states of the nodes of a dynamical network is a problem of fundamental importance in the study of neuronal and genetic networks. An underlying related problem is that of observability, i.e., identifying the conditions under which such a reconstruction is possible. In this paper we study observability of complex dynamical networks, where we consider the effects of network symmetries on observability. We present an efficient algorithm that returns a minimal set of necessary sensor nodes for observability in the presence of symmetries.

Abstract

Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.) is one of the primary perennial forages in the southeastern USA. Newer hybrid cultivars have superior production and nutritive value compared to common ecotypes. However, there are many challenges facing bermudagrass production in the region. First, the bermudagrass stem maggot (BSM; Atherigona reversura Villeneuve) has severely damaged bermudagrass throughout the region. Strategically timed pyrethroid applications significantly reduce adult BSM populations, but efforts are needed to develop integrated pest management plans. Second, an increasing number of producers are noting challenges with green‐up following winter dormancy. This may be attributed to disease, unbalanced soil fertility, and weed pressure. Perhaps one of the most limiting factors for continued production is the deficit of sprigs and trained personnel to sprig hybrid bermudagrasses. This research is critically important as the need for cold‐tolerant bermudagrass is increasing as tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.) S. J. Darbyshire) is declining due to changes in temperature and precipitation throughout the northern parts of the region. Plant breeders are investigating hybrid bermudagrass at latitudes >35° with respect to freeze or cold tolerance. Despite the many challenges facing hybrid bermudagrass in the southeastern USA, researchers are working to ensure its persistence, productivity, and availability for the future. Abstract

Introduction: Maralfalfa grass (Pennisetum spp.) is known for its high dry matter productivity and nutritive value. However, information on agronomic management practices to improve yield and nutritive value in Ethiopia is sparse. Materials and method: The experiment consisted of 7 plant densities (33,333 [75 cm × 40 cm]; 26,667[75 cm × 50 cm]; 25,000 [100 cm × 40 cm]; 22,222 [75 cm × 60 cm]; 20,000 [100 cm × 50 cm]; 16,667 [100 cm × 60 cm]; and 13,333 [125 cm × 60 cm] plants per hectare, and arranged in randomized complete block design with three replications. Results: The results indicated that the year had a significant (P<0.001) effect on measured traits. Plant densities had no significant (P>0.05) effect on the number of nodes and leaves per plant, leaf length, and basal diameters. The number of tillers per plant varied significantly among plant densities only in the first year at the 1st harvest. Plant height in the first year was significantly (P<0.01) greater than in the second year. Discussion: Annual dry matter production and annual crude protein production of Maralfalfa grass were not significantly affected by plant density. Nutritive value parameters (CP, Ash, NDF, ADF, ADL, and IVDMD) were not significantly (P > 0.05) influenced by plant density. Using a lower plant density could reduce the amount of planting material, transport, and labor costs. Conclusion: However, further studies on Maralfalfa grass should be conducted in multi-locations of Ethiopia both under rain-fed and irrigated conditions with various agronomic practices. Abstract

Pharmacogenomics (PGx) is considered an emergent field in developing countries. Research on PGx in the Latin American and the Caribbean (LAC) region remains scarce, with limited information in some populations. Thus, extrapolations are complicated, especially in mixed populations. In this paper, we reviewed and analyzed pharmacogenomic knowledge among the LAC scientific and clinical community and examined barriers to clinical application. We performed a search for publications and clinical trials in the field worldwide and evaluated the contribution of LAC. Next, we conducted a regional structured survey that evaluated a list of 14 potential barriers to the clinical implementation of biomarkers based on their importance. In addition, a paired list of 54 genes/drugs was analyzed to determine an association between biomarkers and response to genomic medicine. This survey was compared to a previous survey performed in 2014 to assess progress in the region. The search results indicated that Latin American and Caribbean countries have contributed 3.44% of the total publications and 2.45% of the PGx-related clinical trials worldwide thus far. A total of 106 professionals from 17 countries answered the survey. Six major groups of barriers were identified. Despite the region’s continuous efforts in the last decade, the primary barrier to PGx implementation in LAC remains the same, the “need for guidelines, processes, and protocols for the clinical application of pharmacogenetics/pharmacogenomics”. Cost-effectiveness issues are considered critical factors in the region. Items related to the reluctance of clinicians are currently less relevant. Based on the survey results, the highest ranked (96%–99%) gene/drug pairs perceived as important were CYP2D6/tamoxifen, CYP3A5/tacrolimus, CYP2D6/opioids, DPYD/fluoropyrimidines, TMPT/thiopurines, CYP2D6/tricyclic antidepressants, CYP2C19/tricyclic antidepressants, NUDT15/thiopurines, CYP2B6/efavirenz, and CYP2C19/clopidogrel. In conclusion, although the global contribution of LAC countries remains low in the PGx field, a relevant improvement has been observed in the region. The perception of the usefulness of PGx tests in biomedical community has drastically changed, raising awareness among physicians, which suggests a promising future in the clinical applications of PGx in LAC.

Abstract

The early molecular identification of strains of Plasmodium vivax that have a worse prognosis is important to stratify the risk of complications and choice of conduct made by medical teams. Thus, the aim of the present study was to associate the presence of polymorphisms in the pvmdr-1 and pvcrt-o resistance genes of P. vivax in patients with better or worse prognosis. This cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted based on data obtained from the records of 120 patients diagnosed with malaria in the Brazilian Amazon. The T958M and F1076L mutations of the pvmdr-1 gene had a frequency of 3.3 and 4.2%, respectively, and primo-infected patients had a 17 times greater chance of being infected with protozoa with the T958M mutation compared to patients with previous episodes. Regarding pvcrt-o, the C393T and T786C polymorphisms had a frequency of 14.2 and 3.3%, respectively, and self-declared white patients had a 3.1 times greater chance of being infected with protozoa with the C393T polymorphism. In addition, patients with this pvcrt-o polymorphism had lower concentrations of C-reactive protein, indicating a better prognosis. These data present clues of genetic indicators useful for assessing the virulence of the parasite and the prognosis of patients with vivax malaria.

Abstract

The alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) cultivar 'UF_AlfPers_2015' (Reg. no. CV‐208, PI 702791) was developed by the Agronomy Department, a unit of the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station, University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF‐IFAS), and was released in 2021. The need for high‐yielding and persistent nondormant alfalfa cultivars adapted to the southeastern United States continues to be a factor limiting the adoption and use of alfalfa in the region. A group of 17 alfalfa plants selected from a pasture of 'Florida 99' were intercrossed in isolation to produce UF_AlfPers_2015. The experimental line was evaluated for herbage accumulation (HA), persistence, and nutritive value in Florida and other states. UF_AlfPers_2015 had superior HA (20% greater than Florida 99 and 30% than 'Bulldog 805' on average) and improved persistence and showed similar nutritive value compared with other cultivars in Florida. UF_AlfPers_2015 had greater HA than 'Alfagraze 600 RR' in Gene Autry, OK, and similar HA compared with Bulldog 505 and Bulldog 805 in Gene Autry, OK; Vashti, TX; and Brooksville, MS. UF_AlfPers_2015 is a nondormant (fall dormancy 9) alfalfa cultivar. A US Plant Variety Protection application has been filed, and breeder seed will be maintained by the Agronomy Department of UF‐IFAS.
