State-of-the-art laser frequency stabilization is limited by miniscule length changes caused by thermal noise. In this work, a cavity-length-insensitive frequency stabilization scheme is implemented using strong dispersion in a $21\,\mathrm{mm}$ long cavity with a europium-ion-doped spacer of yttrium orthosilicate. A number of limiting factors for slow light laser stabilization are evaluated, including the inhomogeneous and homogeneous linewidth of the ions, the deterioration of spectral windows, and the linewidth of the cavity modes. Using strong dispersion, the cavity modes were narrowed by a factor $1.6\cdot 10^5$, leading to a cavity linewidth of $3.0\,\mathrm{kHz}$ and a $Q$ factor of $1.7\cdot 10^{11}$. Frequency stabilization was demonstrated using a cavity mode in a spectral transparency region near the center of the inhomogeneous profile, showing an overlapping Allan deviation below $6\cdot 10^{-14}$ and a linear drift rate of $3.66\,\mathrm{Hz}/\mathrm{s}$. Distortion free negative group velocity pulse propagation is demonstrated in a rare-earth-ion-doped-crystal (RE) through the creation of a carefully designed spectral absorption structure in the inhomogeneous profile of Eu:YSO and subsequently inverting it. The properties of the RE system make it particularly well suited for this since it supports the creation of very sharp, arbitrarily tailored spectral features, which can be coherently inverted by a single pulse thanks to the long coherence time of the transition. All together these properties allow for a large time advancement of pulses without causing distortion. A pulse advancement of 10.9% with respect to the pulse full-width-half-maximum was achieved corresponding to a time-bandwidth product of 0.05. This to our knowledge is the largest time-bandwidth product achieved, with negligible shape distortion and attenuation. We present a quantum repeater protocol for distributing entanglement over long distances, where each repeater node contains several qubits that can couple to one single-photon emitter. Photons from the emitters perform heralded entanglement generation between qubits in neighboring nodes. The protocol leaves the emitters disentangled from the qubits and photons, thus allowing them to be reused to entangle other qubits. The protocol can therefore be time multiplexed, which increases the rate of generated EPR pairs. Deterministic entanglement swapping and heralded entanglement purification are used to extend the distance of the entanglement and reduce the error of the entangled qubits, respectively. We perform a complete protocol analysis by considering all relevant error sources, such as initialization, two-qubit gate, and qubit measurement errors, as well as the exponential decoherence of the qubits with time. The latter is particularly important since we analyze the protocol performance for a broad range of experimental parameters and obtain secret key rates ranging from $1 \rightarrow 1000$ Hz at a distance of $1000$ km. Our results suggest that it is important to reach a qubit memory coherence time of around one second, and two-qubit gate and measurement errors in the order of $10^{-3}$ to obtain reasonable secret key rates over distances longer than achievable with direct transmission.

Rare-earth (RE) ion doped nano-materials are promising candidates for a range of quantum technology applications. Among RE ions, the so-called Kramers' ions possess spin transitions in the GHz range at low magnetic fields, which allows for high-bandwidth multimode quantum storage, fast qubit operations as well as interfacing with superconducting circuits. They also present relevant optical transitions in the infrared. In particular, Er$^{3+}$ has an optical transition in the telecom band, while Nd$^{3+}$ presents a high-emission-rate transition close to 890 nm. In this paper, we measure spectroscopic properties that are of relevance to using these materials in quantum technology applications. We find the inhomogeneous linewidth to be 10.7 GHz for Er$^{3+}$ and 8.2 GHz for Nd$^{3+}$, and the excited state lifetime T$_1$ to be 13.68 ms for Er$^{3+}$ and 540 $\mu$s for Nd$^{3+}$. We study the dependence of homogeneous linewidth on temperature for both samples, with the narrowest linewidth being 379 kHz (T$_2$ = 839 ns) for Er$^{3+}$ measured at 3 K, and 62 kHz (T$_2$ = 5.14 $\mu$s) for Nd$^{3+}$ measured at 1.6 K. Further, we investigate time-dependent homogeneous linewidth broadening due to spectral diffusion and the dependence of homogeneous linewidth on magnetic field, in order to get additional clarity of mechanisms that can influence the coherence time. Quantum memories for quantum communication need to be able to store photons for an extended time and then to release them on demand. This can be achieved in atomic frequency comb ensemble based quantum memories by control pulses that transfer the excitation to and from long-lived spin states. However, such pulses can give rise to coherent and incoherent noise due to their interaction with the memory ensemble. In this article, we experimentally demonstrate the ability to switch off the coherent noise from such control pulses during the echo emission in a spin-wave quantum memory, using the linear Stark effect in rare-earth-ion doped crystals. By applying an electric field pulse, the echo emission was coherently switched off prior to the first spin transfer pulse, and the stored data pulse was restored only when both an optical recall pulse and a re-phasing electrical pulse were applied, giving a high degree of control of both desired and undesired emissions. We estimate the effectiveness of this technique by turning off the free induction decay of a narrow ensemble of ions. This technique can thus improve the noise performance of spin-wave storage at the single photon level by quenching coherent optical radiation created by the strong control pulses. The method demonstrated here represents a proof-of-principle that the spin-wave storage scheme can be combined with Stark control. Flip-flop processes due to magnetic dipole-dipole interaction between neighbouring ions in rare-earth-ion-doped crystals is one of the mechanisms of relaxation between hyperfine levels. Modeling of this mechanism has so far been macroscopic, characterized by an average rate describing the relaxation of all ions. Here however, we present a microscopic model of flip-flop interactions between individual nuclear spins of dopant ions. Every ion is situated in a unique local environment in the crystal, where each ion has different distances and a unique orientation relative to its nearest neighbors, as determined by the lattice structure. Thus, each ion has a unique flip-flop rate and the collective relaxation dynamics of all ions in a bulk crystal is a sum of many exponential decays, giving rise to a distribution of rates rather than a single average decay rate. We employ this model to calculate flip-flop rates in Pr$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ and show experimental measurements of population decay of the ground state hyperfine levels at $\sim$2 K. We also present a new method to measure rates of individual transitions from hole burning spectra that requires significantly fewer fitting parameters in theoretical rate equations compared to earlier work. Furthermore, we measure the effect of external magnetic field on the flip-flop rates and observe that the rates slow down by two orders of magnitude in a field of 5 - 10 mT., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

We present two protocols for constructing quantum processor nodes in randomly doped rare-earth-ion crystals and analyze their properties. By varying the doping concentration and the accessible laser tunability, the processor nodes can contain anywhere from only a few tens to almost $1000$ qubits. Furthermore, the average number of qubits each qubit can interact with, denoted by the connectivity, can be partly tailored to lie between just a few and roughly one hundred. We also study how a limited tunability of the laser affects the results, and conclude that a tuning range of $100$ GHz limits the results to roughly $100$ qubits with around $50$ connections per qubit on average. In order to construct an even larger processor, the vision is that several of these quantum processor nodes should be connected to each other in a multi-node architecture via, e.g., optical interfaces or flying qubits in the form of light. Our results are encouraging for establishing the rare-earth-ion-based systems as a quantum computing platform with strong potential and can serve to focus the efforts within the field.

The effect of instantaneous spectral diffusion (ISD) on gate operations in rare-earth-ion-doped crystals is an important question to answer for the future of rare-earth quantum computing. Here we present a microscopic modeling that highlights the stochastic nature of the phenomenon, and use it to investigate ISD errors on single-qubit gate operations. Furthermore, we present a method to estimate the total error from many different error sources by only studying subsystems containing one error source at a time. This allows us to estimate the total ISD error from all non-qubit dopants in the vicinity of a qubit. We conclude that optical pumping techniques must be used to empty the frequency regions around the qubit transitions from absorption (transmission windows) in order to suppress the ISD errors. Despite using such windows, there remains a roughly $0.3\%$ risk that a qubit has an ISD error larger than the error from other sources. In those cases, the qubit can be discarded and its frequency channel can be reused by another qubit. Quantum computers based on rare-earth-ion-doped crystals show promising properties in terms of scalability and connectivity if single ions can be used as qubits. Through simulations, we investigate gate operations on such qubits and discuss how gate and system parameters affect gate errors, the required frequency bandwidth per qubit, and the risk of instantaneous spectral diffusion (ISD) occurring. Furthermore, we examine how uncertainties in the system parameters affect the gate errors, and how precisely the system needs to be known. We find gate errors for arbitrary single-qubit gates of $2.1\cdot 10^{-4}$ when ISD is not considered and $3.4\cdot 10^{-4}$ when we take heed to minimize it. Additionally, we construct two-qubit gates with errors ranging from $5\cdot 10^{-4} \rightarrow 3\cdot 10^{-3}$ over a broad range of dipole-dipole interaction strengths.

Length changes due to thermo-mechanical noise originating from, for example, Brownian motion are a key limiting factor of present day state-of-the-art laser frequency stabilization using Fabry-P\'erot cavities. We present a laser-frequency stabilization concept using an optical cavity with a strong slow-light effect to reduce the impact of cavity length changes on the frequency stability. The resulting noise-reduction factor is proportional to the ratio between the light phase and group velocities in the highly dispersive cavity spacer. We experimentally demonstrate a proof-of-principle implementation of this laser-frequency stabilization technique using a rare-earth doped crystalline cavity spacer in conjunction with semi-permanent spectral tailoring to achieve precise control of the dispersive properties of the cavity. Several platforms are being considered as hardware for quantum technologies. For quantum computing (QC), superconducting qubits and artificially trapped ions are among the leading platforms, but many others also show promise, e.g. photons, cold atoms, defect centers including Rare-Earth (RE) ions. So far, results are limited to the regime of noisy intermediate scale qubits (NISQ), with a small number of qubits and a limited connectivity, and it is likely that future QC hardware will utilize several existing platforms in different ways. Thus, it currently makes sense to invest resources broadly and explore the full range of promising routes to quantum technology. Rare-earth ions in solids constitute one of the most versatile platforms for future quantum technology. One advantage is good coherence properties even when confined in strong natural traps inside a solid-state matrix. This confinement allows very high qubit densities and correspondingly strong ion-ion couplings. In addition, although their fluorescence is generally weak, cavity integration can enhance the emission greatly and enable very good connections to photonic circuits, including at the telecom wavelengths, making them promising systems for long-term scalability. The primary aim of this roadmap is to provide a complete picture of what components a RE quantum computer would consist of, to describe the details of all parts required to achieve a scalable system, and to discuss the most promising paths to reach it. In brief, we find that clusters of 50-100 single RE ions can act as high fidelity qubits in small processors, occupying only about (10 nm)^3. Due to the high capacity for integration of the RE systems, they be optically read out and connected to other such clusters for larger scalability. Accurate and efficient quantum control in the presence of constraints and decoherence is a requirement and a challenge in quantum information processing. Shortcuts to adiabaticity, originally proposed to speed up slow adiabatic process, have nowadays become versatile toolboxes for preparing states or controlling the quantum dynamics. Unique shortcut designs are required for each quantum system with intrinsic physical constraints, imperfections, and noises. Here, we implement fast and robust control for the state preparation and state engineering in a rare-earth ions system. Specifically, the interacting pulses are inversely engineered and further optimized with respect to inhomogeneities of the ensemble and the unwanted interaction with other qubits. We demonstrate that our protocols surpass the conventional adiabatic schemes, by reducing the decoherence from the excited state decay and inhomogeneous broadening. The results presented here are applicable to other noisy intermediate scale quantum systems.

We present an extension of the atomic frequency comb protocol that utilizes the Stark effect to perform noise-free, on-demand, control. An experimental realization of this protocol was implemented in the Pr$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ solid-state system, and a recall efficiency of 38\% for a 0.8 $\mu$s storage time was achieved. Experiments were performed with both bright pulses as well as weak-coherent states, the latter achieving a signal-to-noise ratio of $570 \pm 120$ using input pulses with an average photon number of $\sim 0.1$. The principal limitation for a longer storage time was found to be the minimum peak width attainable for Pr$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$. We employ an adaptation of an established atomic-frequency comb model to investigate an on-demand, wide-bandwidth, memory based on Eu$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$. From this we determine that a storage time as long as 100 $\mu$s may be practical even without recourse to spin-wave storage., Comment: Published version. 9 pages, 7 figures

High-fidelity qubit initialization is of significance for efficient error correction in fault tolerant quantum algorithms. Combining two best worlds, speed and robustness, to achieve high-fidelity state preparation and manipulation is challenging in quantum systems, where qubits are closely spaced in frequency. Motivated by the concept of shortcut to adiabaticity, we theoretically propose the shortcut pulses via inverse engineering and further optimize the pulses with respect to systematic errors in frequency detuning and Rabi frequency. Such protocol, relevant to frequency selectivity, is applied to rare-earth ions qubit system, where the excitation of frequency-neighboring qubits should be prevented as well. Furthermore, comparison with adiabatic complex hyperbolic secant pulses shows that these dedicated initialization pulses can reduce the time that ions spend in the excited state by a factor of 6, which is important in coherence time limited systems to approach an error rate manageable by quantum error correction. Coherent sources of attosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation present many challenges if their full potential is to be realized. While many applications benefit from the broadband nature of these sources, it is also desirable to produce narrow band XUV pulses, or to study autoionizing resonances in a manner that is free of the broad ionization background that accompanies above-threshold XUV excitation. Here we demonstrate a method for controlling the coherent XUV free induction decay that results from using attosecond pulses to excite a gas, yielding a fully functional modulator for XUV wavelengths. We use an infrared (IR) control pulse to manipulate both the spatial and spectral phase of the XUV emission, sending the light in a direction of our choosing at a time of our choosing. This allows us to tailor the light using opto-optical modulation, similar to devices available in the IR and visible wavelength regions.

In this article, we experimentally demonstrate a new way of controlling the group velocity of an optical pulse by using a combination of spectral hole burning, slow light effect and linear Stark effect in a rare-earth-ion-doped crystal. The group velocity can be changed continuously by a factor of 20 without significant pulse distortion or absorption of the pulse energy. With a similar technique, an optical pulse can also be compressed in time. Theoretical simulations were developed to simulate the group velocity control and the pulse compression processes. The group velocity as well as the pulse reshaping are solely controlled by external voltages which makes it promising in quantum information and quantum communication processes. It is also proposed that the group velocity can be changed even more in an Er doped crystal while at the same time having a transmission band matching the telecommunication wavelength., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

We perform hole burning with a low drift stabilized laser within the zero phonon line of the 4f-5d transition in Ce$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ at 2K. The narrowest spectral holes appear for small applied magnetic fields and are $6\pm4$ MHz wide (FWHM). This puts an upper bound on the homogeneous linewidth of the transition to $3\pm2$ MHz, which is close to lifetime limited. The spin level relaxation time is measured to $72\pm21$ ms with a magnetic field of 10 mT. A slow permanent hole burning mechanism is observed. If the excitation frequency is not changed the fluorescence intensity is reduced by more than 50$\%$ after a couple of minutes of continuous excitation. The spectral hole created by the permanent hole burning has a width in the tens of MHz range, which indicates that a trapping mechanism occurs via the 5d-state.

We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically a controllable way of shifting the frequency of an optical pulse by using a combination of spectral hole burning, slow light effect, and linear Stark effect in a rare-earth-ion doped crystal. We claim that the solid angle of acceptance of a frequency shift structure can be close to $2\pi$, which means that the frequency shifter could work not only for optical pulses propagating in a specific spatial mode but also for randomly scattered light. As the frequency shift is controlled solely by an external electric field, it works also for weak coherent light fields, and can e.g. be used as a frequency shifter for quantum memory devices in quantum communication.

We demonstrate an all-optical Raman spin echo technique, using Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) to create the different pulses of the spin echo sequence: initialization, pi-rotation, and readout. The first pulse of the sequence induces coherence directly from a mixed state, and the technique is used to measure the nuclear spin coherence of an inhomogeneously broadened ensemble of rare-earth ions (Pr$^{3+}$). In contrast to previous experiments it does not require any preparatory hole burning pulse sequences, which greatly shortens the total duration of the sequence. The effect of the different pulses is characterized by quantum state tomography and is compared with simulations. We demonstrate two applications of the technique by using the spin echo sequence to accurately compensate a magnetic field across our sample, and to measure the coherence time at high temperatures up to 11 K, where standard preparation techniques are difficult to implement. The polarization direction of an electromagnetic field changes and eventually reaches a steady state when propagating through a birefringent material with off axis absorption or gain. The steady state orientation direction depends on the magnitude of the absorption (gain) and the phase retardation rate. The change in the polarization direction is experimentally demonstrated in weakly doped ($0.05\%$) Pr$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystals, where the light polarization, if initially aligned along the most strongly absorbing principal axis, gradually switch to a much less absorbing polarization state during the propagation. This means that the absorption coefficient, $\alpha$, in birefringent materials generally varies with length. More than 4 orders of magnitude of cavity-linewidth narrowing in a rare-earth-ion-doped crystal cavity, emanating from strong intracavity dispersion caused by off-resonant interaction with dopant ions, is demonstrated. The dispersion profiles are engineered using optical pumping techniques creating significant semipermanent but reprogrammable changes of the rare-earth absorption profiles. Several cavity modes are shown within the spectral transmission window. Three orders of magnitude cavity-linewidth narrowing in a rare-earth-ion-doped crystal cavity, induced by strong intra-cavity dispersion caused by off-resonant interaction with dopant ions is demonstrated. In this work the inhomogeneous (zero-phonon line) and homogeneous line widths, and one projection of the permanent electric dipole moment change for the Ce 4f-5d transition in Y_2SiO_5 were measured in order to investigate the possibility for using Ce as a sensor to detect the hyperfine state of a spatially close-lying Pr or Eu ion. The experiments were carried out on Ce doped or Ce-Pr co-doped single Y_2SiO_5 crystals. The homogeneous line width was measured to be about 3 MHz, which is essentially limited by the excited state lifetime. Based on the line width measurements, the oscillator strength, absorption cross section and saturation intensity were calculated to be about 9*10^-7, 5*10^-19 m^2 and 1*10^7 W/m^2, respectively. One projection of the difference in permanent dipole moment, Delt_miu_Ce, between the ground and excited states of the Ce ion was measured as 6.3 * 10^-30 C*m, which is about 26 times as large as that of Pr ions. The measurements done on Ce ions indicate that the Ce ion is a promising candidate to be used as a probe to read out a single qubit ion state for the quantum computing using rare-earth ions., Comment: 9 figures, 8 pages

A light-storage experiment with a total (storage and retrieval) efficiency $\eta=58 \pm 5%$ is carried out by enclosing a sample, with a single pass absorption of 10%, in an impedance-matched cavity. The experiment is carried out using the Atomic Frequency Comb (AFC) technique in a praseodymium-doped crystal ($0.05%Pr^{3+}:Y_2SiO_5$) and the cavity is created by reflection coating the crystal surfaces. The AFC technique has previously by far demonstrated the highest multi-mode capacity of all quantum memory concepts tested experimentally. We claim that the present work shows that it is realistic to create efficient, on-demand, long storage time AFC memories.

Cavity assisted quantum memory storage has been proposed [PRA 82, 022310 (2010), PRA 82, 022311 (2010)] for creating efficient (close to unity) quantum memories using weakly absorbing materials. Using this approach we experimentally demonstrate a significant (about 20-fold) enhancement in quantum memory efficiency compared to the no cavity case. A strong dispersion originating from absorption engineering inside the cavity was observed, which directly affect the cavity line-width. A more than 3 orders of magnitude reduction of cavity mode spacing and cavity line-width from GHz to MHz was observed. Rare-earth ions in dielectric crystals are interesting candidates for storing quantum states of photons. A limiting factor on the optical density and thus the conversion efficiency is the distortion introduced in the crystal by doping elements of one type into a crystal matrix of another type. Here, we investigate the system Pr3+:La2(WO4)3, where the similarity of the ionic radii of Pr and La minimizes distortions due to doping. We characterize the praseodymium hyperfine interaction of the ground state (3H4) and one excited state (1D2) and determine the spin Hamiltonian parameters by numerical analysis of Raman-heterodyne spectra, which were collected for a range of static external magnetic field strengths and orientations. On the basis of a crystal field analysis, we discuss the physical origin of the experimentally determined quadrupole and Zeeman tensor characteristics. We show the potential for quantum memory applications by measuring the spin coherence lifetime in a magnetic field that is chosen such that additional magnetic fields do not shift the transition frequency in first order. We demonstrate two-stage laser stabilization based on a combination of Fabry- Perot and spectral-hole burning techniques. The laser is first pre-stabilized by the Fabry-Perot cavity to a fractional-frequency stability of sigma_y(tau) < 10^-13. A pattern of spectral holes written in the absorption spectrum of Eu3+:Y2SiO5 serves to further stabilize the laser to sigma_y(tau) = 6x10^-16 for 2 s < tau < 8 s. Measurements characterizing the frequency sensitivity of Eu3+:Y2SiO5 spectral holes to environmental perturbations suggest that they can be more frequency stable than Fabry-Perot cavities.

Due to inhomogeneous broadening, the absorption lines of rare-earth-ion dopands in crystals are many order of magnitudes wider than the homogeneous linewidths. Several ways have been proposed to use ions with different inhomogeneous shifts as qubit registers, and to perform gate operations between such registers by means of the static dipole coupling between the ions. In this paper we show that in order to implement high-fidelity quantum gate operations by means of the static dipole interaction, we require the participating ions to be strongly coupled, and that the density of such strongly coupled registers in general scales poorly with register size. Although this is critical to previous proposals which rely on a high density of functional registers, we describe architectures and preparation strategies that will allow scalable quantum computers based on rare-earth-ion doped crystals., Comment: Submitted to Phys. A sequence of optical holeburning pulses is used to isolate transitions between hyperfine levels, which are initially buried within an inhomogeneously broadened absorption line. Using this technique selected transitions can be studied with no background absorption on other transitions. This makes it possible to directly study properties of the hyperfine transitions, e.g. transition strengths, and gives access to information that is difficult to obtain in standard holeburning spectroscopy, such as the ordering of hyperfine levels. The techniques introduced are applicable to absorbers in a solid with long-lived sublevels in the ground state and where the homogeneous linewidth and sublevel separations are smaller than the inhomogeneous broadening of the optical transition. In particular, this includes rare-earth ions doped into inorganic crystals and in the present work the techniques are used for spectroscopy of Pr3+ in Y2SiO5.
