Search

JWST has discovered a large population of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) at high redshift. Many of these newly discovered AGN have broad permitted lines (typically H$\alpha$), but are extremely weak in the X-rays. Here we present the NIRSpec spectrum of the most extreme of these objects, GN-28074, an AGN at $z=2.26$ with prominent Balmer, Paschen and \HeI broad lines, and with the highest limit on the bolometric to X-ray luminosity ratio among all spectroscopically confirmed AGN in GOODS. This source is also characterized by a mid-IR excess, most likely associated with the AGN torus' hot dust. The high bolometric luminosity and moderate redshift of this AGN allow us to explore its properties more in depth relative to other JWST-discovered AGN. The NIRSpec spectrum reveals prominent, slightly blueshifted absorption of H$\alpha$, H$\beta$ and \HeI$\lambda$10830. The Balmer absorption lines require gas with densities of $n_{\rm H}> 10^8~{\rm cm}^{-3}$, inconsistent with an ISM origin, but fully consistent with clouds in the Broad Line Region (BLR). This finding suggests that at least part of the X-ray weakness is due to high (Compton thick) X-ray absorption by (dust-free) clouds in the BLR, or in its outer, slowly outflowing regions. GN-28074 is also extremely radio-weak. The radio weakness can also be explained in terms of absorption, as the inferred density of the clouds responsible for H$\alpha$ absorption makes them optically thick to radio emission through free-free absorption. Alternatively, in this and other JWST-discovered AGN, the nuclear magnetic field may have not developed properly yet, resulting both in intrinsically weak radio emission and also lack of hot corona, hence intrinsic X-ray weakness. Finally, we show that recently proposed scenarios, invoking hyper-dense and ultra-metal-poor outflows or Raman scattering to explain the broad H$\alpha$, are completely ruled out., Comment: 21 pages 8 figures in main text. We investigate the X-ray properties of a large sample of 71 broad line and narrow line AGN at 2

A sample of quasars has been recently assembled to investigate the non-linear relation between their monochromatic luminosities at 2500{\AA}, and 2 keV and to exploit quasars as a new class of standardized candles. The use of this technique for cosmological purposes relies on the non-evolution with redshift of the UV-optical spectral properties of quasars, as well as on the absence of possible contaminants such as dust extinction and host-galaxy contribution. We address these possible issues by analysing the spectral properties of our cosmological quasar sample. We produced composite spectra in different bins of redshift and accretion parameters (black hole mass, bolometric luminosity), to investigate any possible evolution of the spectral properties of the continuum of the composites with these parameters. We found a remarkable similarity amongst the various stacked spectra. The overall shape of the continuum does not show any statistically significant trend with the accretion parameters nor with the redshift. The composite spectrum of our quasar sample is consistent with negligible levels of both intrinsic reddening (with a colour excess E(B-V)< 0.01) and host-galaxy emission (less than 10%) in the optical. We tested whether unaccounted dust extinction could explain the discrepancy between our cosmographic fit of the Hubble-Lemaitre diagram and the concordance {\Lambda}CDM model. The average colour excess required to solve the tension should increase with redshift up to unphysically high values (E(B-V)=0.1 at z>3) that would imply that the intrinsic emission of quasars is much bluer and more luminous than ever reported in observed spectra. The similarity of quasar spectra across the parameter space excludes a significant evolution of the average continuum properties with any of the explored parameters, confirming the reliability of our sample for cosmological applications., Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication on A&A

A characteristic feature of quasars is the observed non-linear relationship between their monochromatic luminosities at rest-frame 2500 {\AA} and 2 keV. This relationship is evident across all redshifts and luminosities and, due to its non-linearity, can be implemented to estimate quasar distances and construct a Hubble Diagram for quasars. Historically, a significant challenge in the cosmological application of this relation has been its high observed dispersion. Recent studies have demonstrated that this dispersion can be reduced by excluding biased objects from the sample. Nevertheless, the dispersion remains considerable ($\delta \sim 0.20$ dex), especially when compared to the Phillips relation for supernovae Ia. Given the absence of a comprehensive physical model for the relation, it remains unclear how much of the remaining dispersion is intrinsically tied to the relation itself and how much can be attributed to observational factors not addressed by the sample selection and by the choice of X-ray and UV indicators. Potential contributing factors include (i) the scatter produced by using X-ray photometric results instead of spectroscopic ones, (ii) the intrinsic variability of quasars, and (iii) the inclination of the accretion disc relative to our line of sight. In this study, we thoroughly examine these three factors and quantify their individual contributions to the observed dispersion. Based on our findings, we argue that the intrinsic dispersion of the X-ray/UV luminosity relation is likely below 0.06 dex. Context: A non-linear relation between quasar monochromatic luminosities at 2500A and 2 keV holds at all observed redshifts and luminosities, and it has been used to derive quasar distances and to build a Hubble Diagram of quasars. The choice of the X-ray and UV indicators has so far been somewhat arbitrary, and has typically relied on photometric data. Aims: We want to determine the X-ray and UV proxies that provide the smallest dispersion of the relation, in order to obtain more precise distance estimates, and to confirm the reliability of the X-ray to UV relation as a distance indicator. Methods: We performed a complete UV spectroscopic analysis of a sample of $\sim$1800 quasars with SDSS optical spectra and XMM- Newton X-ray serendipitous observations. In the X-rays, we analysed the spectra of all the sample objects at redshift z $>$1.9, while we relied on photometric measurements at lower redshifts. As done in previous studies, we analysed the relation in small redshift bins, using fluxes instead of luminosities. Results: We show that the monochromatic fluxes at 1 keV and 2500A are, respectively, the best X-ray and UV continuum indicators among those that are typically available. We also find a tight relation between soft X-ray and Mg ii2800A line fluxes, and a marginal dependence of the X-ray to UV relation on the width of the Mg ii line. Conclusions: Our analysis suggests that the physical quantities that are more tightly linked to one another are the soft X-ray flux at $\sim$1 keV and the ionizing UV flux blueward of the Lyman limit. However, the "usual" monochromatic fluxes at 2 keV and 2500A estimated from photometric data provide an almost as-tight X-ray to UV relation, and can be used to derive quasar distances. We present the analysis of the rest frame ultraviolet and optical spectra of 30 bright blue quasars at $z\sim3$, selected to examine the suitability of AGN as cosmological probes. In our previous works, we found an unexpectedly high fraction ($\approx 25 \%$) of X-ray weak quasars in the sample. The latter sources also display a flatter UV continuum and a broader and fainter CIV profile in the archival UV data with respect to their X-ray normal counterparts. Here we present new observations with the LBT in both the $zJ$ (rest-frame $\simeq$2300-3100 $\rm \mathring{A}$) and the $K_S$ ($\simeq$4750-5350 $\rm \mathring{A}$) bands. We estimated black hole masses ($M_{\rm BH}$) and Eddington ratios ($\lambda_{\rm Edd}$) from the from the H$\beta$ and MgII emission lines, finding that our $z\sim3$ quasars are on average highly accreting ($\langle \lambda_{\rm Edd} \rangle\simeq 1.2$ and $\langle M_{\rm BH} \rangle\simeq 10^{9.7}M_\odot$), with no difference in $\lambda_{\rm Edd}$ or $M_{\rm BH}$ between X-ray weak and X-ray normal quasars. From the $zJ$ spectra, we derive flux and equivalent width of MgII and FeII, finding that X-ray weak quasars display higher FeII/MgII ratios with respect to typical quasars. FeII/MgII ratios of X-ray normal quasars are instead consistent with other estimates up to $z\simeq6.5$, corroborating the idea of already chemically mature BLRs at early cosmic time. From the $K_S$ spectra, we find that all the X-ray weak quasars present generally weaker [OIII] emission (EW<10 $\rm \mathring{A}$) than the normal ones. The sample as a whole, however, abides by the known X-ray/[OIII] luminosity correlation, hence the different [OIII] properties are likely due to an intrinsically weaker [OIII] emission in X-ray weak objects, associated to the shape of the spectral energy distribution. In the past few years, we built a Hubble diagram of quasars up to redshift z$\sim$7, based on the nonlinear relation between quasars' x-ray and UV luminosities. Such a Hubble diagram shows a >4$\sigma$ deviation from the standard flat $\Lambda$CDM model at z>1.5. Given the important consequences of this result, it is fundamental to rule out any systematic effect in the selection of the sample and/or in the flux measurements, and to investigate possible redshift dependences of the relation, that would invalidate the use of quasars as standard candles. Here we review all the observational results supporting our method: the match of the Hubble diagram of quasars with that of supernovae in the common redshift range, the constant slope of the relation at all redshifts, the redshift non-evolution of the spectral properties of our sources both in the x-rays and in the UV. An independent test of our results requires the observation of other standard candles at high redshift. In particular, we expect that future observations of supernovas at z>2 will confirm the deviation from the concordance model found with the Hubble diagram of quasars.

The recent extension of the Hubble diagram of Supernovae and quasars to redshifts much higher than 1 prompted a revived interest in non-parametric approaches to test cosmological models and to measure the expansion rate of the Universe. In particular, it is of great interest to infer model-independent constraints on the possible evolution of the dark energy component. Here we present a new method, based on a Neural Network Regression, to analyze the Hubble Diagram in a completely non-parametric, model-independent fashion. We first validate the method through simulated samples with the same redshift distribution as the real ones, and discuss the limitations related to the "inversion problem" for the distance-redshift relation. We then apply this new technique to the analysis of the Hubble diagram of Supernovae and quasars. We confirm that the data up to $z \sim 1-1.5$ are in agreement with a flat ${\Lambda}CDM$ model with ${\Omega}_M \sim 0.3$, while $\sim 5$-sigma deviations emerge at higher redshifts. A flat ${\Lambda}CDM$ model would still be compatible with the data with ${\Omega}_M > 0.4$. Allowing for a generic evolution of the dark energy component, we find solutions suggesting an increasing value of ${\Omega}_M$ with the redshift, as predicted by interacting dark sector models.

Kilo-parsec scale hard ($>$ 3 keV) X-ray continuum and fluorescent Fe K$\alpha$ line emission has been recently discovered in nearby Compton-thick (CT) active galactic nuclei (AGN), which opens new opportunities to improve AGN torus modeling and investigate how the central supermassive black hole interacts with and impacts the host galaxy. Following a pilot Chandra survey of nearby CT AGN, we present in this paper the Chandra spatial analysis results of five uniformly selected non-CT but still heavily obscured AGN to investigate the extended hard X-ray emission by measuring the excess emission counts, excess fractions, and physical scales. Three of them show extended emission in the 3.0-7.0 keV band detected at $>$ 3$\sigma$ above the Chandra PSF with total excess fractions ranging from $\sim$8% - 20%. The extent of the hard emission ranges from at least $\sim$250 pc to 1.1 kpc in radius. We compare these new sources with CT AGN and find that CT AGN appear to be more extended in the hard band than the non-CT AGN. Similar to CT AGN, the amounts of extended hard X-ray emission relative to the total emission of these obscured AGN are not negligible. Together with other extended hard X-ray detected AGN in the literature, we further explore potential correlations between the extended hard X-ray component and AGN parameters. We also discuss the implications for torus modeling and AGN feedback. Tidal disruption events (TDEs) are usually discovered at X-ray or optical wavelengths through their transient nature. A characteristic spectral feature of X-ray detected TDEs is a "supersoft" X-ray emission, not observed in any other extragalactic source, with the exception of a few, rapidly variable hyper-luminous X-ray sources (HLXs) or supersoft active galactic nuclei (AGN) that are however distinguishable by their optical emission. The goal of our work is to find extragalactic supersoft sources associated with galactic centres. We expect this category to include overlooked TDEs, supersoft AGN and nuclear HLXs. Finding such sources would allow for the study of extreme regime accretion on different black hole mass scales. We searched for supersoft X-ray sources (SSS) by cross-correlating optical and X-ray catalogues to select extragalactic near-nuclear sources and we then filtered for very steep spectra (photon index $\Gamma>3$) and high X-ray luminosities ($L_X>10^{41}$~erg~s$^{-1}$). With our blind search, we retrieved about 60 sources including 15 previously known supersoft AGN or TDEs, so demonstrating the efficiency of our selection. Of the remaining sample, 36 sources, although showing steeper-than-usual spectra, are optically classified as AGN. The remaining nine, previously unknown sources show spectral properties consistent with the emission by extremely soft-excess dominated AGN (five sources) or TDE (four sources). An {\it XMM-Newton} follow-up observation of one of these sources confirmed its likely TDE nature. Our work is the first attempt to discover TDEs by their spectral features rather than their variability and has been successful in retrieving known TDEs as well as discovering new extreme ultrasoft sources, including four new TDE candidates, one of which is confirmed via follow-up observations., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables. The non-linear relation between the X-ray and ultraviolet (UV) luminosity in quasars has been used to derive quasar distances and to build a Hubble diagram at redshifts up to $z\sim$ 7. This cosmological application is based on the assumption of independence of the relation on redshift and luminosity. We want to test the reliability of this hypothesis by studying the spectroscopic properties of high-redshift quasars in the X-ray and UV bands. We performed a one-by-one analysis of a sample of 130 quasars at $z>$ 2.5 with high-quality X-ray and UV spectroscopic observations. We found that not only the X-ray to UV correlation still holds at these redshifts, but its intrinsic dispersion is as low as 0.12 dex (previous works reached 0.20$-$0.22 dex). For a sample of quasars at $z\sim$ 3 with particularly high-quality observations the dispersion further drops to 0.09 dex, a value entirely accountable for by intrinsic variability and source geometry effects. The composite spectra of these quasars, in both the X-rays and the UV, do not show any difference with respect to the average spectra of quasars at lower redshifts. The absence of any spectral difference between high- and low-$z$ quasars and the tightness of the X-ray to UV relation suggests that no evolutionary effects are present in the relation. Therefore, it can be safely employed to derive quasar distances. The detection of the accelerated expansion of the Universe has been one of the major breakthroughs in modern cosmology. Several cosmological probes (CMB, SNe Ia, BAO) have been studied in depth to better understand the nature of the mechanism driving this acceleration, and they are being currently pushed to their limits, obtaining remarkable constraints that allowed us to shape the standard cosmological model. In parallel to that, however, the percent precision achieved has recently revealed apparent tensions between measurements obtained from different methods. These are either indicating some unaccounted systematic effects, or are pointing toward new physics. Following the development of CMB, SNe, and BAO cosmology, it is critical to extend our selection of cosmological probes. Novel probes can be exploited to validate results, control or mitigate systematic effects, and, most importantly, to increase the accuracy and robustness of our results. This review is meant to provide a state-of-art benchmark of the latest advances in emerging beyond-standard cosmological probes. We present how several different methods can become a key resource for observational cosmology. In particular, we review cosmic chronometers, quasars, gamma-ray bursts, standard sirens, lensing time-delay with galaxies and clusters, cosmic voids, neutral hydrogen intensity mapping, surface brightness fluctuations, stellar ages of the oldest objects, secular redshift drift, and clustering of standard candles. The review describes the method, systematics, and results of each probe in a homogeneous way, giving the reader a clear picture of the available innovative methods that have been introduced in recent years and how to apply them. We analyse some open debates in cosmology in light of the most updated quasar (QSO) sample, covering a wide redshift range up to $z\sim7.5$, combined with type Ia supernovae (SNe) and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). Indeed, extending the cosmological analyses with high-redshift data is key to distinguishing between different cosmological models that are degenerate at low redshifts, and allowing better constraints on a possible dark energy (DE) evolution. Also, we discuss combinations of BAO, SNe, and QSO data to understand their compatibility and implications for extensions of the standard cosmological model. Specifically, we consider a flat and non-flat $\Lambda \mathrm{CDM}$ cosmology, a flat and non-flat DE model with a constant DE equation of state parameter ($w$), and four flat DE models with variable $w$, namely the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder and Jassal-Bagla-Padmanabhan models, and an "exponential" and Barboza-Alcaniz parameterisations. We find that a joint analysis of QSO+SNe with BAO is only possible in the context of a flat Universe. Indeed BAO confirms the flatness condition assuming a curved geometry, whilst SNe+QSO show evidence of a closed space. We also find $\Omega_{M,0}=0.3$ in all data sets assuming a flat $\Lambda \mathrm{CDM}$ model. Yet, all the other models show a statistically significant deviation at 2-3$\sigma$ with the combined SNe+QSO+BAO data set. In the models where DE density evolves with time, SNe+QSO+BAO data always prefer $\Omega_{M,0}>0.3$, $w_{0}<-1$ and $w_{a}>0$. We present a study of the relation between X-rays and ultraviolet emission in quasars for a sample of broad-line, radio-quiet objects obtained from the cross-match of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR14 with the latest Chandra Source Catalog 2.0 (2,332 quasars) and the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey (273 quasars). The non-linear relation between the ultraviolet (at 2500 A, $L_{O}$) and the X-ray (at 2 keV, $L_{X}$) emission in quasars has been proved to be characterised by a smaller intrinsic dispersion than the observed one, as long as a homogeneous selection, aimed at preventing the inclusion of contaminants in the sample, is fulfilled. By leveraging on the low background of Chandra, we performed a complete spectral analysis of all the data available for the SDSS-CSC2.0 quasar sample (i.e. 3,430 X-ray observations), with the main goal of reducing the uncertainties on the source properties (e.g. flux, spectral slope). We analysed whether any evolution of the $L_{X}-L_{O}$ relation exists by dividing the sample in narrow redshift intervals across the redshift range spanned by our sample, $z \simeq 0.5-4$. We find that the slope of the relation does not evolve with redshift and it is consistent with the literature value of $0.6$ over the explored redshift range, implying that the mechanism underlying the coupling of the accretion disc and hot corona is the same at the different cosmic epochs. We also find that the dispersion decreases when examining the highest redshifts, where only pointed observations are available. These results further confirm that quasars are `standardisable candles', that is we can reliably measure cosmological distances at high redshifts where very few cosmological probes are available., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We analyse the properties of the CIV broad emission line in connection with the X-ray emission of 30 bright SDSS quasars at z~3.0-3.3 with pointed XMM-Newton observations, which were selected to test the suitability of AGN as cosmological tools. In our previous work, we found that a large fraction (~25%) of the quasars in this sample are X-ray underluminous by factors of >3-10. As absorbing columns of >10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ can be safely ruled out, their weakness is most likely intrinsic. Here we explore possible correlations between the UV and X-ray features of these sources to investigate the origin of X-ray weakness. We fit their UV SDSS spectra and analyse their CIV properties (e.g., equivalent width, EW; line peak velocity, $\upsilon_{\rm peak}$) as a function of the X-ray photon index and 2-10 keV flux. We confirm the trends of CIV $\upsilon_{\rm peak}$ and EW with UV luminosity at 2500 angstrom for both X-ray weak and X-ray normal quasars, as well as the correlation between X-ray weakness and CIV EW. In contrast to some recent work, we do not observe any clear relation between the 2-10 keV luminosity and $\upsilon_{\rm peak}$. We find a correlation between the hard X-ray flux and the integrated CIV flux for X-ray normal quasars, whilst X-ray weak quasars deviate from the main trend by more than 0.5 dex. We argue that X-ray weakness might be interpreted in a starved X-ray corona picture associated with an ongoing disc-wind phase. If the wind is ejected in the vicinity of the black hole, the extreme-UV radiation that reaches the corona will be depleted, depriving the corona of seeds photons and generating an X-ray weak quasar. Yet, at the largest UV luminosities (>10$^{47}$ erg s$^{-1}$), there will still be an ample reservoir of ionising photons that can explain the excess CIV emission observed in the X-ray weak quasars with respect to normal sources of similar X-ray luminosities., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures (with 3 more figures in the Appendix), abstract abridged. Cosmography is a powerful tool to investigate the Universe kinematic and then to reconstruct dynamics in a model-independent way. However, recent new measurements of supernovae Ia and quasars have populated the Hubble diagram up to high redshifts ($z \sim 7.5$) and the application of the traditional cosmographic approach has become less straightforward due to the large redshifts implied. Here we investigate this issue through an expansion of the luminosity distance-redshift relation in terms of "orthogonal" logarithmic polynomials. In particular we point out the advantages of a new procedure of "orthogonalization" and we show that such an expansion provides a very good fit in the whole $z=0\div 7.5$ range to both real and mock data obtained assuming various cosmological models. Moreover, despite of the fact that the cosmographic series is tested well beyond its convergence radius, the parameters obtained expanding the luminosity distance - redshift relation for the $\Lambda$CDM model are broadly consistent with the results from a fit of mock data obtained with the same cosmological model. This provides a method to test the reliability of a cosmographic function to study cosmological models at high redshifts and it demonstrates that the logarithmic polynomial series can be used to test the consistency of the $\Lambda$CDM model with the current Hubble diagram of quasars and supernovae Ia. We confirm a strong tension (at $>4\sigma$) between the concordance cosmological model and the Hubble diagram at $z>1.5$. Several independent cosmological data, collected within the last twenty years, revealed the accelerated expansion rate of the Universe, usually assumed to be driven by the so called dark energy, which, according to recent estimates, provides now about 70 % of the total amount of matter-energy in the Universe. The nature of dark energy is yet unknown. Several models of dark energy have been proposed: a non zero cosmological constant, a potential energy of some self interacting scalar field, effects related to the non homogeneous distribution of matter, or effects due to alternative theories of gravity. Recently, it turned out that the standard flat LambdaCDM is disfavored (at 4 sigma) when confronted with a high redshift Hubble diagram, consisting of supernovae of type Ia (SNIa), quasars (QSOs) and gamma ray-bursts (GRBs) ([1-3]). Here we use the same data to investigate if this tension is confirmed, using a different approach: actually in [1-3], the deviation between the best fit model and the LambdaCDM model was noticed by comparing cosmological parameters derived from cosmographic expansions of their theoretical predictions and observed high redshift Hubble diagram. In this paper we use a substantially different approach, based on a specific parametrization of the redshift dependent equation of state (EOS) of dark energy component w(z). Our statistical analysis is aimed to estimate the parameters characterizing the dark energy EOS: our results indicate (at > 3 sigma level) an evolving dark energy EOS, while the cosmological constant has a constant EOS, wLambda =-1. We present a new catalogue of ~2,400 optically selected quasars with spectroscopic redshifts and X-ray observations from either Chandra or XMM-Newton. The sample can be used to investigate the non-linear relation between the UV and X-ray luminosity of quasars, and to build a Hubble diagram up to redshift z~7.5. We selected sources that are neither reddened by dust in the optical/UV nor obscured by gas in the X-rays, and whose X-ray fluxes are free from flux-limit related biases. After checking for any possible systematics, we confirm, in agreement with our previous works, that (i) the X-ray to UV relation provides distance estimates matching those from supernovae up to z~1.5, and (ii) its slope shows no redshift evolution up to z~5. We provide a full description of the methodology for testing cosmological models, further supporting a trend whereby the Hubble diagram of quasars is well reproduced by the standard flat $\Lambda$CDM model up to z~1.5-2, but strong deviations emerge at higher redshifts. Since we have minimized all non-negligible systematic effects, and proven the stability of the $L_{\rm X}-L_{\rm UV}$ relation at high redshifts, we conclude that an evolution of the expansion rate of the Universe should be considered as a possible explanation for the observed deviation, rather than some systematic (redshift-dependent) effect associated with high-redshift quasars., Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The recent Chandra discovery of extended $\sim$kpc-scale hard ($>$ 3 keV) X-ray emission in nearby Compton-thick (CT) active galactic nuclei (AGN) opens a new window to improving AGN torus modeling and investigating how the central super massive black hole interacts with and impacts the host galaxy. Since there are only a handful of detections so far, we need to establish a statistical sample to determine the ubiquity of the extended hard X-ray emission in CT AGN, and quantify the amount and extent of this component. In this paper, we present the spatial analysis results of a pilot Chandra imaging survey of 7 nearby ($0.006 < z < 0.013$) CT AGN selected from the Swift-BAT spectroscopic AGN survey. We find that five out of the seven CT AGN show extended emission in the 3-7 keV band detected at $>$ 3$\sigma$ above the Chandra PSF with $\sim$12% to 22% of the total emission in the extended components. ESO 137-G034 and NGC 3281 display biconical ionization structures with extended hard X-ray emission reaching kpc-scales ($\sim$ 1.9 kpc and 3.5 kpc in diameter). The other three show extended hard X-ray emission above the PSF out to at least $\sim$360 pc in radius. We find a trend that a minimum 3-7 keV count rate of 0.01 cts/s and total excess fraction $>$20% is required to detect a prominent extended hard X-ray component. Given that this extended hard X-ray component appears to be relatively common in this uniformly selected CT AGN sample, we further discuss the implications for torus modeling and AGN feedback., Comment: 20 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Ultraviolet (UV) line driven winds may be an important part of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback process, but understanding their impact is hindered by the complex nature of the radiation hydrodynamics. Instead, we have taken the approach pioneered by Risaliti & Elvis, calculating only ballistic trajectories from radiation forces and gravity, but neglecting gas pressure. We have completely re-written their QWIND code using more robust algorithms, and can now quickly model the acceleration phase of these winds for any AGN spectral energy distribution spanning UV and X-ray wavebands. We demonstrate the code using an AGN with black hole mass $10^8\, M_\odot$ emitting at half the Eddington rate and show that this can effectively eject a wind with velocities $\simeq (0.1-0.2)\, c$. The mass loss rates can be up to $\simeq 0.3 M_\odot$ per year, consistent with more computationally expensive hydrodynamical simulations, though we highlight the importance of future improvements in radiation transfer along the multiple different lines of sight illuminating the wind. We present a flux-resolved X-ray analysis of the dwarf Seyfert 1.8 galaxy NGC 4395, based on three archival $XMM-Newton$ and one archival $NuSTAR$ observations. The source is known to harbor a low mass black hole ($\sim 10^4- {\rm a~ few~}\times 10^{5}~\rm M_\odot$) and shows strong variability in the full X-ray range during these observations. We model the flux-resolved spectra of the source assuming three absorbing layers: neutral, mildly ionized, and highly ionized ($N_{\rm H} \sim 1.6\times 10^{22}-3.4 \times 10^{23}~\rm cm^{-2}$, $\sim 0.8-7.8 \times 10^{22}~\rm cm^{-2}$, and $ 3.8 \times 10^{22}~\rm cm^{-2}$, respectively. The source also shows intrinsic variability by a factor of $\sim 3$, on short timescales, due to changes in the nuclear flux, assumed to be a power law ($\Gamma = 1.6-1.67$). Our results show a positive correlation between the intrinsic flux and the absorbers' ionization parameter. The covering fraction of the neutral absorber varies during the first $XMM-Newton$ observation, which could explain the pronounced soft X-ray variability. However, the source remains fully covered by this layer during the other two observations, largely suppressing the soft X-ray variability. This suggests an inhomogeneous and layered structure in the broad line region. We also find a difference in the characteristic timescale of the power spectra between different energy ranges and observations. We finally show simulated spectra with $XRISM$, $Athena$, and $eXTP$, which will allow us to characterize the different absorbers, study their dynamics, and will help us identify their locations and sizes., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

(abridged) We present the X-ray analysis of a sample of 30 luminous quasars at $z\simeq3.0-3.3$ with deep XMM-Newton observations, selected from the SDSS-DR7 to be representative of the most luminous, intrinsically blue quasar population. By construction, the sample boasts a unique degree of homogeneity in terms of optical/UV properties. In the X-rays, only four sources are too faint for a detailed spectral analysis. Neglecting a radio-loud object, the other 25 quasars are, as a whole, the most X-ray luminous ever observed, with rest-frame 2-10 keV luminosities of $0.5-7\times10^{45}$ erg/s. The continuum photon index distribution, centred at $\Gamma\sim1.85$, is in excellent agreement with those in place at lower redshift, luminosity and black-hole mass, confirming the universal nature of the X-ray emission mechanism in quasars. Even so, when compared against the well-known $L_{\rm X}-L_{\rm UV}$ correlation, our quasars unexpectedly split into two distinct subsets. About 2/3 of the sources are clustered around the relation with a minimal scatter of 0.1 dex, while the remaining 1/3 appear to be X-ray underluminous by factors of $>3-10$. Such a large incidence ($\approx25\%$) of X-ray weakness has never been reported in radio-quiet, non-BAL quasar samples. Several factors could contribute to enhance the X-ray weakness fraction among our $z\simeq3$ blue quasars. However, the X-ray weak objects also have, on average, flatter spectra, with no clear evidence of absorption. Indeed, column densities in excess of a few $\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ can be ruled out for most of the sample. We suggest that, at least in some of our X-ray weak quasars, the corona might experience a radiatively inefficient phase due to the presence of a powerful accretion-disc wind, which substantially reduces the accretion rate through the inner disc and so the availability of seed photons for Compton up-scattering., Comment: Version accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics (13+2 pages, 10+1 figures, 3 tables)

A tight non-linear relation between the X-ray and the optical-ultraviolet (UV) emission has been observed in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) over a wide range of redshift and several orders of magnitude in luminosity, suggesting the existence of an ubiquitous physical mechanism regulating the energy transfer between the accretion disc and the X-ray emitting corona. Recently, our group developed a method to use this relation in the observational cosmology, turning quasars into standardizable candles. This work has the main aim to investigate the potential evolution of this correction at high redshifts. We thus studied the $L_{\rm X}-L_{\rm UV}$ relation for a sample of quasars in the redshift range 4<$z$<7, adopting the selection criteria proposed in our previous work regarding their spectral properties. The resulting sample consists of 53 Type 1 (unobscured) quasars, observed either with Chandra or XMM-Newton, for which we performed a full spectral analysis, determining the rest-frame 2 keV flux density, as well as more general X-ray properties such as the estimate of photon index, and the soft (0.5-2 keV) and hard (2-10 keV) unabsorbed luminosities. We find that the relation shows no evidence for evolution with redshift. The intrinsic dispersion of the L$_X$-L$_{UV}$ for a sample free of systematics/contaminants is of the order of 0.22 dex, which is consistent with previous estimates from our group on quasars at lower redshift., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, 2 appendices

In the current framework, the standard parametrization of our Universe is the so-called Lambda Cold Dark Matter ({\Lambda}CDM) model. Recently, Risaliti & Lusso (2019) have shown a ~4{\sigma} tension with the {\Lambda}CDM model through a model-independent parametrization of a Hubble Diagram of supernovae Ia (SNe Ia) from the JLA survey and quasars. Model-independent approaches and independent samples over a wide redshift range are key to testing this tension and any possible systematics. Here we present an analysis of a combined Hubble Diagram of SNe Ia, quasars, and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) to check the agreement of the quasar and GRB cosmological parameters at high redshifts (z>2) and to test the concordance flat {\Lambda}CDM model with improved statistical accuracy. We build a Hubble diagram with SNe Ia from the Pantheon sample (Scolnic et al. 2018), quasars from the Risaliti & Lusso (2019) sample, and GRBs from the Demianski et al. (2017a) sample, where quasars are standardised through the observed non-linear relation between their ultraviolet and X-ray emission and GRBs through the correlation between the spectral peak energy and the isotropic-equivalent radiated energy (the so-called "Amati relation"). We fit the data with cosmographic models consisting of a fourth-order logarithmic polynomial and a fifth-order linear polynomial, and compare the results with the expectations from a flat {\Lambda}CDM model. We confirm the tension between the best fit cosmographic parameters and the {\Lambda}CDM model at ~4{\sigma} with SNe Ia and quasars, at ~2{\sigma} with SNe Ia and GRBs, and at >4{\sigma} with the whole SNe Ia+quasars+GRB data set. The completely independent high-redshift Hubble diagrams of quasars and GRBs are fully consistent with each other, strongly suggesting that the deviation from the standard model is not due to unknown systematic effects but to new physics., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, amended typos in equations 7 and 8

We write in response to the call from the 2020 Decadal Survey to submit white papers illustrating the most pressing scientific questions in astrophysics for the coming decade. We propose exploration as the central question for the Decadal Committee's discussions.The history of astronomy shows that paradigm changing discoveries are not driven by well formulated scientific questions, based on the knowledge of the time. They were instead the result of the increase in discovery space fostered by new telescopes and instruments. An additional tool for increasing the discovery space is provided by the analysis and mining of the increasingly larger amount of archival data available to astronomers. Revolutionary observing facilities, and the state of the art astronomy archives needed to support these facilities, will open up the universe to new discovery. Here we focus on exploration for compact objects and multi messenger science. This white paper includes science examples of the power of the discovery approach, encompassing all the areas of astrophysics covered by the 2020 Decadal Survey.

We recently proposed the equivalent width (EW) of the narrow [OIII]5007{\AA} emission line as an orientation indicator for active galactic nuclei. We tested this method on about $12,300$ optically selected broad line quasars from the SDSS 7th Data Release at redshift $z < 0.8$ and with full width at half-maximum values of broad emission lines (H$\alpha$, H$\beta$, and MgII) larger than $2000$ km/s. We now examine their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) using broad band photometry from the near-infrared to the ultraviolet to look for variations in the overall shape as a function of the EW[OIII]. We find that quasars with low EW[OIII] values (close to face-on position) have flatter near-infrared SEDs with respect to sources with high EW[OIII] values (almost edge-on). Moreover, quasars with high EW[OIII] values show a factor of $\sim 2$ lower emission in the UV to quasars with low EW[OIII] values. Our findings indicate that the torus is clumpy and, on average, co-axial with the accretion disc and broad line region, in agreement with the most recent theoretical models for the obscuring torus., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (8 pages, 4 figures and 2 tables)

We present results from a deep, coordinated $XMM$-$Newton$+$NuSTAR$ observation of the Seyfert 2 galaxy IRAS 00521-7054. The $NuSTAR$ data provide the first detection of this source in high-energy X-rays ($E > 10$ keV), and the broadband data show this to be a highly complex source which exhibits relativistic reflection from the inner accretion disc, further reprocessing by more distant material, neutral absorption, and evidence for ionised absorption in an extreme, ultrafast outflow ($v_{\rm{out}} \sim 0.4c$). Based on lamppost disc reflection models, we find evidence that the central supermassive black hole is rapidly rotating ($a > 0.77$), consistent with previous estimates from the profile of the relativistic iron line, and that the accretion disc is viewed at a fairly high inclination ($i \sim 59^{\circ}$). Based on extensive simulations, we find the ultrafast outflow is detected at $\sim$4$\sigma$ significance (or greater). We also estimate that the extreme outflow should be sufficient to power galaxy-scale feedback, and may even dominate the energetics of the total output from the system., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the results of high-resolution subpixel imaging of the hard continuum and Fe K{\alpha} line of the Compton Thick (CT) Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) ESO 428-G014, observed with Chandra ACIS. While the 3-4 keV emission is dominated by an extended component, a single nuclear point source is prominent in the 4-6 keV range. Instead, two peaks of similar intensity, separated by ~36 pc in projection on the plane of the sky are detected in the Fe K{\alpha} emission. The SE knot could be marginally associated with the heavily obscured hard continuum source. We discuss four possible interpretations of the nuclear morphology. (1) Given the bolometric luminosity and likely black hole (BH) mass of ESO 428-G014, we may be imaging two clumps of the CT obscuring torus in the Fe K{\alpha} line. (2) The Fe K{\alpha} knots may be connected with the fluorescent emission from the dusty bicone, or (3) with the light echo of a nuclear outburst. (4) We also explore the less likely possibility that we may be detecting the rare signature of merging nuclei. Considering the large-scale kpc-size extent of the hard continuum and Fe K{\alpha} emission (Papers I and II), we conclude that the AGN in ESO 428-G014 has been active for at least 104 yrs. The concordance (LambdaCDM) model reproduces the main current cosmological observations assuming the validity of general relativity at all scales and epochs, the presence of cold dark matter, and of a cosmological constant, equivalent to a dark energy with constant density in space and time. However, the LambdaCDM model is poorly tested in the redshift interval between the farthest observed Type Ia supernovae5 and that of the Cosmic Microwave background (CMB). We present spatially resolved Chandra narrow-band imaging and imaging spectroscopy of NGC 3393. This galaxy hosts a Compton-thick Seyfert 2 AGN with sub-kpc bipolar outflows that are strongly interacting with the circumnuclear gas. We identify narrow-band excess emission associated with the Ne IX 0.905 keV transition (with likely contributions due to intermediate-state iron emission) that points to strong shocks driven by AGN feedback. Imaging spectroscopy resolves outflow-ISM interaction sites and the surrounding ISM at ~100 pc scales, and suggests the presence of a hot AGN wind above the plane at radii beyond the shock sites. The cross-cone shows evidence for reprocessing of photoionization which has passed through gaps in the torus, and also for collisionally excited plasma which may be powered by a shock-confined equatorial outflow. Deep X-ray observations at sub-arcsecond resolution (such as may be performed very efficiently by Lynx, which would also energetically resolve the complex line emission) are necessary to eliminate model degeneracies and reduce uncertainties in local feedback properties., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures, 33 images, 6 tables. Ionized outflows, revealed by broad asymmetric wings of the [OIII] line, are commonly observed in AGN but the low intrinsic spatial resolution of observations has generally prevented a detailed characterization of their properties. The MAGNUM survey aims at overcoming these limitations by focusing on the nearest AGN, including NGC 1365, a nearby Seyfert galaxy (D~17 Mpc), hosting a low-luminosity AGN (Lbol ~ 2x10^43 erg/s). We want to obtain a detailed picture of the ionized gas in the central ~5 kpc of NGC 1365 in terms of physical properties, kinematics, and ionization mechanisms. We also aim to characterize the warm ionized outflow as a function of distance from the nucleus and its relation with the nuclear X-ray wind. We employed VLT/MUSE optical integral field spectroscopic observations to investigate the warm ionized gas and Chandra ACIS-S X-ray data for the hot highly-ionized phase. We obtained flux, kinematic, and diagnostic maps of the optical emission lines, which we used to disentangle outflows from disk motions and measure the gas properties down to a spatial resolution of ~70 pc. [OIII] emission mostly traces an AGN-ionized kpc-scale biconical outflow with velocities up to ~200 km/s. H{\alpha} emission traces instead star formation in a circumnuclear ring and along the bar, where we detect non-circular motions. Soft X-rays are mostly due to thermal emission from the star-forming regions, but we could isolate the AGN photoionized component which matches the [OIII] emission. The mass outflow rate of the extended ionized outflow matches that of the nuclear X-ray wind and then decreases with radius. However, the hard X-ray emission from the circumnuclear ring suggests that star formation might contribute to the outflow. X-ray observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) show variability on timescales ranging from a few hours up to a few days. Some of this variability may be associated with occultation events by clouds in the broad line region. In this work, we aim to model the spectral and polarization variability arising from X-ray obscuration events, serving as probes of the relativistic effects that dominate the emission from the innermost regions. We show that asymmetries can be clearly detected in the AGN spectra as the cloud is shading different parts of the accretion disc. We also show that these effects can be detected in the temporal evolution of the polarization degree ($P$) and the polarization position angle ($\Psi$). The variations in $P$ and $\Psi$ are highly dependent on the inclination of the system, the position of the primary source and its intrinsic polarization. Considering the disc-corona system only, for an inclination $\theta = 30^\circ$ (60$^\circ$), $P$ increases up to $\sim 20$% (30)%, in the 4-8 keV band, when the unpolarized primary source is obscured. However, after accounting for the contribution of parsec-scale material scattering the light in our line of sight (narrow-line region and molecular torus), the variability is smoothed out and the polarization degree can be reduced down to $\sim 1$% (2%). Our results suggest that the study of eclipses in AGN with the next generation of X-ray spectral and polarimetric missions could provide unique information on the physics and structure of the innermost regions as well as of the parsec-scale material., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 16 pages, 11 figures

We present a search for nuclear X-ray emission in the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) of a sample of groups and clusters of galaxies extracted from the Chandra archive. The exquisite angular resolution of Chandra allows us to obtain robust photometry at the position of the BCG, and to firmly identify unresolved X-ray emission when present, thanks to an accurate characterization of the extended emission at the BCG position. We present a deep Chandra spectral and spatial study of the kpc-scale diffuse X-ray emission of the Compton thick (CT) AGN ESO428-G014. The entire spectrum is best fit with composite photoionization + thermal models. The diffuse emission is more extended at the lower energies (<3 keV). The smaller extent of the hard continuum and Fe K{\alpha} profiles imply that the optically thicker clouds responsible for this scattering may be relatively more prevalent closer to the nucleus. These clouds must not prevent soft ionizing X-rays from the AGN escaping to larger radii, in order to have photoionized ISM at larger radii. This suggests that at smaller radii there may be a larger population of molecular clouds to scatter the hard X-rays, as in the Milky Way. The diffuse emission is also significantly extended in the cross-cone direction, where the AGN emission would be mostly obscured by the torus in the standard AGN model. Our results suggest that the transmission of the obscuring region in the cross-cone direction is ~10% than in the cone-direction. In the 0.3-1.5 keV band, the ratio of cross-cone to cone photons increases to ~84\%, suggesting an additional soft diffuse emission component, disjoint from the AGN. This could be due to hot ISM trapped in the potential of the galaxy. X-ray reflection is a very powerful method to assess the spin of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in active galactic nuclei (AGN), yet this technique is not universally accepted. Indeed, complex reprocessing (absorption, scattering) of the intrinsic spectra along the line of sight can mimic the relativistic effects on which the spin measure is based. In this work, we test the reliability of SMBH spin measurements that can currently be achieved through the simulations of high-quality XMM-Newton and NuSTAR spectra. Each member of our group simulated ten spectra with multiple components that are typically seen in AGN, such as warm and (partial-covering) neutral absorbers, relativistic and distant reflection, and thermal emission. The resulting spectra were blindly analysed by the other two members. Out of the 60 fits, 42 turn out to be physically accurate when compared to the input model. The SMBH spin is retrieved with success in 31 cases, some of which (9) are even found among formally inaccurate fits (although with looser constraints). We show that, at the high signal-to-noise ratio assumed in our simulations, neither the complexity of the multi-layer, partial-covering absorber nor the input value of the spin are the major drivers of our results. The height of the X-ray source (in a lamp-post geometry) instead plays a crucial role in recovering the spin. In particular, a success rate of 16 out of 16 is found among the accurate fits for a dimensionless spin parameter larger than 0.8 and a lamp-post height lower than five gravitational radii., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables. We present the results from a $\sim500$ ks Chandra observation of the $z=6.31$ QSO SDSS J1030+0524. This is the deepest X-ray observation to date of a $z\sim6$ QSO. The QSO is detected with a total of 125 net counts in the full ($0.5-7$ keV) band and its spectrum can be modeled by a single power-law model with photon index of $\Gamma = 1.81 \pm 0.18$ and full band flux of $f=3.95\times 10^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. When compared with the data obtained by XMM-Newton in 2003, our Chandra observation in 2017 shows a harder ($\Delta \Gamma \approx -0.6$) spectrum and a 2.5 times fainter flux. Such a variation, in a timespan of $\sim2$ yrs rest-frame, is unexpected for such a luminous QSO powered by a $> 10^9 \: M_{\odot}$ black hole. The observed source hardening and weakening could be related to an intrinsic variation in the accretion rate. However, the limited photon statistics does not allow us to discriminate between an intrinsic luminosity and spectral change, and an absorption event produced by an intervening gas cloud along the line of sight. We also report the discovery of diffuse X-ray emission that extends for 30"x20" southward the QSO with a signal-to-noise ratio of $\sim$6, hardness ratio of $HR=0.03_{-0.25}^{+0.20}$, and soft band flux of $f_{0.5-2 \: keV}= 1.1_{-0.3}^{+0.3} \times 10^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, that is not associated to a group or cluster of galaxies. We discuss two possible explanations for the extended emission, which may be either associated with the radio lobe of a nearby, foreground radio galaxy (at $z \approx 1-2$), or ascribed to the feedback from the QSO itself acting on its surrounding environment, as proposed by simulations of early black hole formation., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, A&A accepted
