Clerodendrum ervatamioides C. Y. Wu was described in 1977 with its type locality in Yunnan, China. During our floristic investigation in the Muong Nhe Nature Reserve of Vietnam of Dien Bien province and in the Muong Te district of the Lai Chau province, we collected several specimens of Clerodendrum ervatamioides, marking the first record of its occurrence in Vietnam. In this paper, details of the morphological features, distribution, ecology, photo plates, and a table comparing the morphological features with its ally Clerodendrum garrettianum Craib are provided.

Amblovenatum immersum (Blume) Mazumdar (Thelypteridaceae) is newly recorded in Vietnam. It is similar to A. terminans (Panigrahi) J. P. Roux in its woody rhizome and cristate spores but differs in terms of its plant size, lobed pinnae, lobed segments, veinlets, sori and indusia. It was previously found to exist in China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Thailand as well as in east Africa, tropical America, northern Australia and Micronesia. The present study provides a detailed description, photos, and line drawing of the species. Furthermore, a comparison of the diagnostic characters with the closely related species in Vietnam A. terminans is provided.

Tripterygium wilfordii Hook.f. (Celastraceae), collected from Phia Oac-Phia Den National Park of Vietnam, is reported here as a new generic and species record for the flora of Vietnam. The genus Tripterygium differs from other genera of Celastraceae by its samara fruits, which become three-winged at maturity, and a scandent shrub. Taxonomic notes, descriptions, line drawing and photographs are provided, together with short notes on the distribution, ecology and phenology of Tripterygium wilfordii.

Ischaemum amboliense (Poaceae, Andropogoneae), a new species of Muraina grass, is described and illustrated here. The new species is closely allied to I. travancorense but differs from it in having annual habit and erect posture, culm with sparsely hairy nodes, well-exerted racemes, lower glumes of sessile spikelets with 3–4 side nodules without ridges, upper glume of sessile spikelets with bicuspidate apex and margins with a membranous wing on one side of apical region and lower lemma of sessile spikelets winged on both sides towards the apex. A strict consensus tree obtained from the Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian analyses of trnLC–trnLD and ETS datasets supported the novelty of the species. Here, we provide a detailed morphological description, molecular phylogenetic analysis, distribution map, and photo-plates of the novel and allied species.

Rungia gialaiensis, a new species endemic to Gia Lai Province in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, is described and illustrated. It is morphologically allied to R. daklakensis and R. khasiana, but differs from both in its stoloniferous branches growing from leaf axils.

The genus Capparis Linnaeus (1753: 503) belongs to the family Capparaceae and is distributed in tropics and subtropics of the Old World, comprising 141 species (POWO 2021). Jacobs (1965) studied the genus from Indus to pacific land and classified it under four formal sections viz. Capparis, Sodada, Monostichocalyx, and Busbeckea. Thereafter, several new species were described under the genus from various parts of the Old World (Srisanga & Chayamarit 2004, Fici 2012, Huang et al. 2013, Thuong et al. 2013, 2015, 2017a,b, 2018, 2020, Fici et al. 2020, Murugan et al. 2020).

Pseudoxytenanthera madhavii a new species of bamboo, locally known as Mes and traditionally utilized in the northern Western Ghats of India, is described and illustrated. The new species can be distinguished from its allied species, P. stocksii by longer and shining culms, young culms covered with white powdery scuff, undulating culm blades, fresh culm sheaths with waxy coating, black to brownish black hairs on culm sheaths, hollow culms with wall thickness of 0.9–1.9 cm at breast height and filaments united more than half of the length. A detailed description, photoplates, distribution map are provided for the new species in addition to the key for Indian Pseudoxytenanthera.

In spite of availability of several plastomes representing different tribes of Plantaginaceae, sparse attempts have been made to understand the plastome structure, evolution, and phylogenomics. In the present study, we have made an effort to understand the gene content and plastome evolution in the family Plantaginaceae using the newly generated plastome sequence of Veronica ovata subsp. kiusiana, a taxon native to SE Asia. In the first-ever attempt, plastomes of seven out of 10 tribes of Plantaginaceae have been compared to understand the evolution across the tribes of Plantaginaceae. The size of the plastome of V. ovata subsp. kiusiana is 152,249 bp, showing a typical quadripartite structure containing LSC, SSC, and two IRs with the sizes of 83,187, 17,704, and 25,679 respectively. The plastome comparison revealed the unique deletions in ycf2 and ndhF genes of members of different tribes, and also revealed high nucleotide variable hotspots. The study also revealed six highly variable genes and intergenic spacer viz. rps16, rps15-ycf1, ccsA-ndhD, ndhC-trnV, petN-psbM, and ycf1-trnN as potential DNA barcodes for the genus Veronica. The phylogenomic study revealed the sister relationship between V. ovata subsp. kiusiana and V. persica and also suggested the tentative placement of seven tribes in the family Plantaginaceae.

The Western Ghats of India support a significant amount of biodiversity despite heavy habitat loss. The northern part of this biodiversity hot-spot, along with Konkan, is considerably different from its southern and central counterparts on account of lesser precipitation and extended dry season. Though this region has been floristically surveyed well, there was a long need for a synthesis on local endemism of the flowering plants. Therefore, the present work was undertaken to produce an updated list of the local endemic plant species of the region with an analysis of habitat characteristics and their survival strategies. An extensive review of literature, herbarium records, and field studies yielded a checklist of 181 taxa including four monospecific genera which were examined for their distribution across their latitudinal spread and habitat specificity. A majority of the endemics are therophytes with their predominance, especially on rock outcrops. Northern Western Ghats seems to be the center of rapid diversification of certain herbaceous endemic genera like Ceropegia, Glyphochloa, Dipcadi, Eriocaulon and a few others. Despite being declared as a biodiversity hot-spot and having a higher concentration of endemic taxa, the region is underrepresented in global IUCN threat status assessments. The implication of effective conservation measures is necessary and the data presented in the manuscript can be used as a proxy for conservation planning.

The genus Capparis is well known for its medicinal properties and many species of the genus are widely used in crude drug preparation. The present study is an effort to understand the inter and intraspecific plastome variations within genus Capparis using two newly sequenced plastomes. Plastome representatives from four taxa of Capparis were compared to understand the gene composition and arrangements within the genus. The LSC and SSC regions exhibited high nucleotide variation in Capparis species. The loss of two ndh genes from C. spinosa var. herbacea is reported for the first time. Moreover, we also report pseudogenization of seven genes from the genome of Capparis spinosa var. herbacea. In addition, rpl32-ccsA, atpF-atpH, petA-psbJ, trnL-trnF, trnH-psbA spacer region and one gene ycf1 were identified as potential barcodes for the genus Capparis based on inter and intraspecific variations.

The genus Smithsonia Saldanha (1974: 73) belongs to family Orchidaceae, subfamily Epidendroideae, tribe Vandeae, subtribe Aeridinae and is endemic to Western Ghats of India (Kumar et al. 2001, Irwin & Narasimhan 2011). The genus comprises three species, viz. S. straminea C.J.Saldanha (1974: 73), S. maculata (Dalzell) (1851: 282) C.J.Saldanha (1974: 74) and S. viridiflora (Lindl.) (1858: 38) C.J.Saldanha (1974: 75).

The present work is an effort to untangle the taxonomy of Phlogacanthus pulcherrimus, a poorly known species reported here for the first time for the flora of Vietnam. Fresh specimens of this species were collected from three localities in Southern Vietnam. They provided new insights to its appearance and morphology. Phlogacanthus pulcherrimus can be distinguished from the morphologically close P. geoffrayi and P. turgidus by oblanceolate-obovate, light to dark purple flower-subtending bracts, oblanceolate bracteoles, and staminodes 1 mm long. The corolla of the Vietnamese specimens of P. pulcherrimus is uniformly dark purple outside. A detailed description, photographs, and information on habitat, ecology and distribution of P. pulcherrimus are provided. Typification of this name is performed, and a specimen at K (K000885620) is designated as a lectotype.

Ischaemum janarthanamii S.A. Bokil, Datar & R.K. Choudhary, a new species belonging to family Poaceae, subfamily Andropogoneae is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to I. dalzellii and I. semisagittatum but differs from them in having geniculately ascending culms, lower glume of sessile spikelets winged on both sides, apex of upper glume of pedicelled spikelets mucronate, lower glume of pedicelled spikelets asymmetrically deltoid to oblong-lanceolate, joints of rachis linear-trigonous and bases of lower leave-blades hastate. Bayesian analysis of combined trnL c-d and ETS data sets supported the separation of the new species.

Examination of type specimens has shown that Primula subansirica G.D. Pal is a Gesneriad and conspecific with Beccarinda cordifolia (Anthony) B.L. Burtt (Gesneriaceae), thus a reduction is made and a new synonymy is proposed.

Capparis bachii Sy, R.K. Choudhary & Joongku Lee (Capparaceae) is described and illustrated based on a collection from Dong Nai Province, southern Vietnam. It is morphologically similar to C. diffusa but differs from it by having numerous flowers per umbel, numerous stamens per flower, larger gynophore, cordate leaf base, and presence of hairs on leaves.

Plagiopteron Griff. (Celastraceae), collected from Bac Giang Province of Vietnam is reported here as a new generic record for the flora of Vietnam. It is supposedly an early derived member of the subfamily Hippocrateoideae (composed of tribes Campylostemoneae and Hippocrateeae), within Hippocrateaceae. The genus differs from other members of Celastraceae by its many bicyclically arranged stamens. Leaf anatomical studies have been performed to understand various features such as venation, vascular bundles, collenchyma and stomata. Taxonomic notes, description, and photographs are provided, together with short notes on the distribution, ecology and phenology of the species.Bangladesh J. Jasminum vietnamense B.H. Quang & Joongku Lee, sp. nova (Oleaceae) from Quang Nam province of Vietnam is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to J. adenophyllum, J. fuchsiifolium and J. pierranum, but differs from them by having a comparatively smaller calyx tube, absence of domatia at vein axils of the leaf, and by considerably smaller bracts.

Stephania subpeltata (방기과)의 베트남 분포를 처음으로 보고한다. 본 종은 형태적으로 S. japonica와 유사하지만 엽신이 방패모양에 가까운 난상삼각상 또는 넓은 삼각상이며, 엽병이 조금 더 짧고, 잎맥의 수가 적으며, 작은 화경에 산형모양의 취산화서가 달리지만 드물게는 복취산화서를 가지며, 꽃이 자색이고 내과피 에 돌출된 열의 수가 적어 뚜렷하게 구별된다. 본 종의 분류학적 기재, 상세 분포 및 생태학적 정보와 함께 베트남에 분포하는 함박이속(Stephania) 식물의 종검색표를 제시하였다.

Rungia daklakensis D.V. Hai, Y.F. Deng & Joongku Lee sp. nova (Acanthaceae) is described and illustrated from Vietnam. It is morphologically closely related to R. pierrei, from which it differs by the bifariously pubescent stem, shape and pubescence of leaves, smaller spikes, much bigger sterile bracts, glabrous calyx and glabrous capsules. Colour photographs, description and an identification key to Vietnamese species of Rungia are provided.

A new species of Goniothalamus (Blume) Hook.f. & Thomson (Annonaceae), G. banii B. H. Quang, R. K. Choudhary & V.T. Chinh, is described and illustrated from Thanh Hoa Province, Vietnam. This species shows morphological similarities with G. uvarioides King and G. donnaiensis Finet & Gagnep. but is differentiated by having 22–30 (or more) secondary veins in the leaf, a 1–3-flowered cyme, a ca 2–3 cm long pedicel, lanceolate and tomentose outer petals, stipitate obovoid-oblong monocarps, and a single-seeded monocarp.

While revising the genus Dillenia Linnaeus (1753: 535) for Malaysia, Hoogland (1952) proposed the new combination, Dillenia mansonii (Gage 1906: 73) Hoogland (1952: 83) by transferring Wormia mansoni Gage (1906: 73) (Wormia mansonii). Gage (1906) in the protologue of W. mansonii cited the specimen examined as ‘In ripis fluminis Yunzalin, prope confluentum cum Salween, Tenasserim. Manson!’. Hoogland (1952) cited ‘Type specimen: Manson, banks of Yunzalin, Riv. above its junction with the Salween, Burma, May 1905; holotype in CAL’ under D. mansonii. During the study, we could trace out four such specimens housed at CAL (CAL0000004061, CAL0000004062, CAL0000004063 and CAL0000004064), three of which are annotated by Hoogland as ‘type’ (CAL0000004061, CAL0000004063, CAL0000004064) and the remaining one as ‘ISOTYPE’. However, in our opinion, these specimens are to be considered as syntypes following Art. 40, Note 1 (McNeill 2014, Turland et al. 2018). The citation of ‘Holotype’ by Hoogland has to be accepted as a correctable error under Art. 9.10 (Turland et al. 2018). There are more than one specimens at CAL of a single gathering and it cannot be ascertained which specimen Hoogland (1952) designated as the holotype. Hence, the holotype designated by Hoogland (1952) should be corrected to first-step lectotype (Art. 9.17: Turland et al. 2018). We have designated here a second-step lectotype following the Art. 9.17 (Turland et al. 2018).

Ethnopharmacological relevance The ethnobotanical survey was carried out in the Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve (BHHNR), Vietnam. The Van Kieu ethnic group, the inhabitant of Nature Reserve, is rich in knowledge about the medicinal plants found in the Nature Reserve. However, their knowledge is less documented. Aim of the study The present study was conducted to document the use of medicinal plants, plant parts used, mode of preparation and delivery by the ethnic group of Van Kieu. The study also aimed at comparing the information generated by this study with the previously published Dictionary of Vietnam Medicinal plants (DVM). Materials and methods The information was collected through semi-structured and unstructured interviews. The interviews were conducted from April 2016 to March 2017. The number of informants involved in the survey was 93 belonging to age group of 20–81. Species Use-Reports (UR) were analyzed to determine the plant importance in the local and the Informant Consensus Factor (FIC). Local plant uses were listed and compared with the previously published data from Vietnam. Results Comprehensively 355 Use-Reports were documented in this study. A total of 111 medicinal plant species belonging to 102 genera and 46 families were reported. Out of 46 families, Euphorbiaceae (10 species), Compositae and Leguminosae (9 species each), Apocynaceae (7 species), Rutaceae and Rubiaceae (5 species each) were the dominant families. Leaves were the most frequently used plant part (43.1%) in the preparation of medicines. The most frequent preparation method was decoction (49%) while the oral route of administration (51%) was the most commonly mentioned mode of administration. Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam., Chromolaena odorata (L.) R.M.King & H.Rob., Blumea balsamifera (L.) DC., Psidium guajava L. and Catunaregam spinosa (Thunb.) Tirveng. were shown to be the most useful plants as indicated by their relatively high UR. Eight medicinal plants (7.21%) used by Van Kieu ethnic people have not been previously reported in DVM. Conclusion The Van Kieu ethnic group holds valuable knowledge about uses of medicinal plant resources which is inherited through generations however this knowledge was not documented. The study highlights the need for documenting and publicizing the traditional medicinal knowledge which will provide basic data for further research and conservation.

Justicia kampotiana Benoist (Acanthaceae) is reported as a new record for the flora of Vietnam. This species differs from its allied species J. ingrata Benoist in having corolla outside pubescent, tubes slightly longer than limbs and considerably shorter petioles. Description, line drawing and color photographs are provided for species identification. Furthermore, a comparison of the diagnostic characters with those of related species is made.

Capparis gialaiensis Sy, a new species of Capparaceae from Vietnam is described and illustrated. It is morphologically closest to C. longistipitata, but differs in length of thorns, filaments and gynophore, shape of the leaf and shape and size of petals. Color photographs, a table comparing the new species with closely allied species and a key are provided to facilitate species identification.

The genus Trigonella includes the widely cultivated T. foenum-graecum and a number of other medicinal and aromatic plant species distributed around the Mediterranean region. Sectional delimitation of Trigonella species is still based on morphology and interspecific relationships within the genus are not yet sufficiently resolved. Phylogenetic relationships in 22 species representing 11 of the 12 sections recognized within the genus Trigonella were analyzed using nuclear ITS and plastid trnL-F DNA sequences. Within nuclear ITS region, ITS-II was found to evolve faster compared to ITS-I. Maximal phylogenetic resolution and support was obtained in the combined analysis of the two selected regions. Trees resulting from maximum parsimony as well as Bayesian inference of combined data provided evidence for Trigonella being monophyletic with high support but did not agree with the traditional subgeneric division. Phylogenetic reconstructions indicated three major lineages supported by apomorphies in inflorescence and stipule. The phylogram supported the sectional delimitation of sections Cylindricae, Verae, Samaroideae, Pectinatae, Erosae and Callicerates. There is strong support to combine monotypic sections Pectinatae and Erosae into one. However, species belonging to section Foenum-graecum and Falcatulae clustered in different subclades, contrary to their current classification. Inflorescence type appears to be a useful character with taxonomic potential for phenetic implications at subgeneric and sectional level within the genus. Moreover, some legume and seed characteristics, considered important in existing taxonomy, appear to have arisen more than once in Trigonella and are homoplastic.

Eriocaulon karaavalense Darsh., R.K. Choudhary, Datar & G.R. Rao (Eriocaulaceae) is described and illustrated as a new species from the Western Ghats, India. It is closely similar to E. kanarense but differs from it by the number of peduncles, linear-lanceolate leaves, glandular female petals, non-beaked seeds, and ribbon-shaped seed appendages. Eriocaulon karaavalense is also similar to E. palghatense and E. odoratum but differs from the former by hemispherical white heads, unequal male petals, and remarkably longer peduncles; and from the latter by linear-lanceolate leaves, white heads and seed appendages in the form of split ribbon-like bands. Phylogenetic analysis based on ITS and trnL-F loci confirmed the status of E. karaavalense as a distinct species.

Prismatomeris Thwaites is a small genus consisting of 15 species in the family Rubiaceae and is distributed throughout Asia (Mabberley, 2008; Chen and Taylor, 2011). In Viet Nam, the genus is represented by four species (Ho, 2000; Tran, 2005). While exploring the flora of HonBa Nature Reserve in Khan Hoa Province of the country, the authors came across an interesting specimen of Prismatomeris which, after critical examination and with help of relevant literature (Pitard, 1924; Ho, 2000; Tran, 2005; Chen and Taylor, 2011) and type specimens, identified as P. fragrans E.T. Geddes. This species was so far reported from North West Laos and Thailand, but never from Viet Nam. Hence, this is reported as a new distributional record for the flora of Viet Nam. A detailed description and colour photographs are provided for easy identification of the species.

Talipariti simile (Blume) Fryxell, Malvaceae is reported as new record from Vietnam. The plant can be differentiated from its allied species T. macrophyllum (Roxb. ex Hornem.) Fryxell in having glabrescent stems with purplish and smaller hairs, lanceolate-oblong and smaller stipules and ovoid capsules which are devoid of apicule or beaks. Taxonomic description, line drawing and color photographs have been provided to add to the species identification. Furthermore, comparison of the diagnostic characters between this species and the above mentioned related species is made.

Jasminum attenuatum Roxb. ex G. Don, a species of Oleaceae, was recently found in Kon Ka Kinh National Parkof Vietnam that represents a new record to the flora of the country. The plant can be differentiated from its allied species J. lati-petalum C.B. Clarke and J. simplicifolium subsp. funale (Decne) Kiew by the shape of its leaf blade, in having 5-20 floweredinflorescence, linear bracts, and obconic and glabrous calyx with shorter lobes. The present study provides the species descrip-tion, illustrations, micrographs by scanning electron microscope of the pollen grains, and important taxonomic notes. Further-more, a comparison of the diagnostic characters between this species and the above mentioned related species is made. Don, (물푸레나무과)을 베트남 미기록종으로 보고한다. 본 종은 근연종인 J. latipetalum과 J. simplicifolium subsp. funale와는 엽신의 모양, 화서에5-20개의 꽃이 달리고 선상의 포를 가지며 악편은 짧고 무모이며 역원추형의 악을 갖는 특징으로 근연종들과 구분된다. 본 연구에 종 동정을 위한 중요한 형질과 분류학적 기재, 식물도해, 원색사진 및 화분의 주사전자현미경 사진을제시하였으며 본 종과 근연종인 J. latipetalum과 J. simplicifolium subsp. funale 와의 분류학적 형질들을 비교하였다.

The present study focuses on the status of Reseda pentagyna Abdallah & A.G. Miller (Resedaceae). The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of nuclear ribosomal DNA and chloroplast trnL-F gene of the questioned species were sequenced. The Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) search showed maximum identity with R. stenostachya. The parsimony analysis of ITS, trnL-F and combined sequences data analyses revealed grouping of Reseda species consistent with established taxonomic sections of the genus, R. pentagyna showed proximity with R. stenostachya (100% bootstrap support), nested within the clade of section Reseda.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjpt.v20i2.17397Bangladesh J. Argostemma glabra Joongku Lee, T.B. Tran & R.K. Choudhary, a new species of Rubiaceae from Khanh Hoa Province of Vietnam is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to A. apiculatum, but differs in its creeping habit, 4–6 flowered inflorescence, bigger and triangular bracts, smaller peduncle, bigger and broadly triangular calyx lobes, and non-apiculate and smaller corolla. Color photographs, a line drawing and a taxonomic key are provided to facilitate identification.

One rare, poorly known species from India, South China and Thailand - Jasminum extensum Wall. ex G. Don is recently discovered in Vietnam representing a new record to the flora of the country. The plant differs from its closely related species viz. Jasminum pierreanum in having coriaceous leaves and 5–6 primary veins in each side of the mid-rib. Detailed information on taxonomy, types, morphology, habitat, ecology, distribution and studied voucher specimens, as well as illustrations are provided here for species identification.

Capparis daknongensis D.T. Sy, G.C. Tucker, Cornejo & Joongku Lee, a new species of Capparaceae from Dak Nong province, Vietnam, is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to C. khuamak, but differs in having pruinose twigs, fewer stamens, longer filaments and gynophore, and a different fruit morphology.
