Search

Murunskite (K$_2$FeCu$_3$S$_4$) is a bridging compound between the only two known families of high-temperature superconductors. It is a semiconductor like the parent compounds of cuprates, yet isostructural to metallic iron-pnictides. Moreover, like both families, it has an antiferromagnetic (AF)-like response with an ordered phase occurring below $\approx$ 100 K. Through comprehensive neutron, M\"ossbauer, and XPS measurements on single crystals, we unveil AF with a nearly commensurate quarter-zone wave vector. Intriguingly, the only identifiable magnetic atoms, iron, are randomly distributed over one-quarter of available crystallographic sites in 2D planes, while the remaining sites are occupied by closed-shell copper. Notably, any interpretation in terms of a spin-density wave is challenging, in contrast to the metallic iron-pnictides where Fermi-surface nesting can occur. Our findings align with a disordered-alloy picture featuring magnetic interactions up to second neighbors. Moreover, in the paramagnetic state, iron ions are either in Fe$^{3+}$ or Fe$^{2+}$ oxidation states, associated with two distinct paramagnetic sites identified by M\"ossbauer spectroscopy. Upon decreasing the temperature below the appearance of magnetic interactions, these two signals merge completely into a third, implying an orbital transition. It completes the cascade of (local) transitions that transform iron atoms from fully orbitally and magnetically disordered to homogeneously ordered in inverse space, but still randomly distributed in real space., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figure, 2 tables (9 pages, 4 figures in the main text; 8 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables in the appendix)

Spiral spin liquids are an exotic class of correlated paramagnets with an enigmatic magnetic ground state composed of a degenerate manifold of fluctuating spin spirals. Experimental realisations of the spiral spin liquid are scarce, mainly due to the prominence of structural distortions in candidate materials that can trigger order-by-disorder transitions to more conventionally ordered magnetic ground states. Expanding the pool of candidate materials that may host a spiral spin liquid is therefore crucial to realising this novel magnetic ground state and understanding its robustness against perturbations that arise in real materials. Here, we show that the material LiYbO$_2$ is the first experimental realisation of a spiral spin liquid predicted to emerge from the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on an elongated diamond lattice. Through a complementary combination of high-resolution and diffuse neutron magnetic scattering studies on a polycrystalline sample, we demonstrate that LiYbO$_2$ fulfils the requirements for the experimental realisation of the spiral spin liquid and reconstruct single-crystal diffuse neutron magnetic scattering maps that reveal continuous spiral spin contours -- a characteristic experimental hallmark of this exotic magnetic phase., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted PRL

Neutron scattering measurements have been performed on deuterated powder samples of claringbullite and Zn-doped claringbullite (Zn$_x$Cu$_{4-x}$(OD)$_{6}$FCl). At low temperatures, claringbullite Cu$_4$(OD)$_{6}$FCl forms a distorted pyrochlore lattice with long-range magnetic order and spin-wave-like magnetic excitations. Partial Zn doping leads to the nominal ZnCu$_3$(OD)$_{6}$FCl compound, a geometrically frustrated spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet that shows no transition to magnetic order down to 1.5 K. We present the results of muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) and neutron scattering on the Ce-based quasikagome lattice CeRh$_{1-x}$Pd$_{x}$Sn ($x=0.1$ to 0.75). Our ZF-$\mu$SR results reveal the absence of static long-range magnetic order down to 0.05~K in $x = 0.1$ single crystals. The weak temperature-dependent plateaus of the dynamic spin fluctuations below 0.2~K in ZF-$\mu$SR together with its longitudinal-field (LF) dependence between 0 and 3~kG indicate the presence of dynamic spin fluctuations persisting even at $T$ = 0.05~K without static magnetic order. On the other hand, $C_{\text{4f}}$/$T$ increases as --log $T$ on cooling below 0.9~K, passes through a broad maximum at 0.13~K and slightly decreases on further cooling. The ac-susceptibility also exhibits a frequency independent broad peak at 0.16~K, which is prominent with an applied field $H$ along $c$-direction. We, therefore, argue that such a behavior for $x=0.1$ (namely, a plateau in spin relaxation rate ($\lambda$) below 0.2~K and a linear $T$ dependence in $C_{\text{4f}}$ below 0.13~K) can be attributed to a metallic spin-liquid (SL) ground state near the quantum critical point in the frustrated Kondo lattice. The LF-$\mu$SR study suggests that the out of kagome plane spin fluctuations are responsible for the SL behavior. Low energy inelastic neutron scattering (INS) of $x$ = 0.1 reveals gapless magnetic excitations, which are also supported by the behavior of $C_{\text{4f}}$ proportional to $T^{1.1}$ down to 0.06~K., Comment: 19 pages and 9 figures

MnSb$_{2}$O$_{6}$ is based on the structural chiral $P$321 space group #150 where the magnetic Mn$^{2+}$ moments ($S=5/2$, $L\approx 0$) order antiferromagnetically at $T_\mathrm{N}=12$ K. Unlike the related iron based langasite (Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$) where the low temperature magnetism is based on a proper helix characterized by a time-even pseudoscalar `magnetic' chirality, the Mn$^{2+}$ ions in MnSb$_{2}$O$_{6}$ order with a cycloidal structure at low temperatures, described instead by a time-even vector `magnetic' polarity. A tilted cycloidal structure has been found [M. Kinoshita et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 047201 (2016)] to facilitate ferroelectric switching under an applied magnetic field. In this work, we apply polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction analyzing the magnetic and nuclear structures in MnSb$_{2}$O$_{6}$ with the aim of understanding this magnetoelectric coupling. We find no evidence for a helicoidal magnetic structure with one of the spin envelope axes tilted away from the cycloidal $c$-axis. However, on application of a magnetic field $\parallel$ $\vec{c}$ the spin rotation plane can be tilted, giving rise to a cycloid-helix admixture that evolves towards a distorted helix (zero cycloidal component) for fields great than $\approx$ 2 T. We propose a mechanism for the previously reported ferroelectric switching based on coupled structural and magnetic chiralities requiring only an imbalance of structural chiral domains.

We present the low-temperature magnetic structures of SrGd$_2$O$_4$ combining neutron diffraction methods on polycrystalline and single-crystal samples containing the $^{160}$Gd isotope. In contrast to other members of the Sr$Ln_2$O$_4$ family ($Ln$ = lanthanide) this system reveals two long-range ordered magnetic phases, which our diffraction data unambiguously identify. Below $T_{\rm N1}$ = 2.73~K, a $\mathbf{q}_1$ = (0 0 0) magnetic structure is stabilized where ferromagnetic chains along the $c$~axis (space group $Pnam$) are coupled antiferromagnetically with neighboring chains. On cooling below $T_{\rm N2}$ = 0.48~K, an additional incommensurate component modulated by $\mathbf{q}_2$ = (0~0~0.42) evolves and aligned along either of the perpendicular axes for the two different Gd sites, resulting in a fan-like magnetic structure. The identification of the particular Gd sites with the magnetic order observed with neutron diffraction is facilitated by a detailed analysis of the crystal fields acting on the sites. The observed ordering phenomena underline the complex multiaxial anisotropy in this system.

We investigate the magnetic and crystal electric field (CEF) states of the Kondo lattice system CeCuGa3 by muon spin relaxation (muSR), neutron diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. A noncentrosymmetric BaNiSn3-type tetragonal crystal structure (space group I4mm) is inferred from x-ray as well as from neutron powder diffraction. The low-temperature magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity data show an anomaly near 2.3 - 2.5~K associated with long range magnetic ordering, which is further confirmed by muSR and neutron diffraction data. The neutron powder diffraction collected at 1.7 K shows the presence of magnetic Bragg peaks indexed by an incommensurate magnetic propagation vector k = (0.148, 0.148, 0) and the magnetic structure is best described by a longitudinal spin density wave with ordered moments lying in ab-plane. An analysis of the INS data based on a CEF model reveals the presence of two magnetic excitations near 4.5 meV and 6.9 meV. The magnetic heat capacity data suggest an overall CEF splitting of 20.7 meV, however the excitation between 20 and 30 meV is very broad and weak in our INS data, but could provide an evidence of CEF level in this energy range in agreement with the magnetic entropy. Our analysis of INS data based on the CEF-phonon model indicates that the two excitations at 4.5 meV and 6.9 meV have their origin in CEF-phonon coupling (i.e. splitting of one CEF peak into two peaks, called vibron), with an overall splitting of 28.16 meV, similar to the case of CeCuAl3 and CeAuAl3., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures

The magnetic ground state of polycrystalline N\'eel skyrmion hosting material GaV$_4$S$_8$ has been investigated using ac susceptibility and powder neutron diffraction. In the absence of an applied magnetic field GaV$_4$S$_8$ undergoes a transition from a paramagnetic to a cycloidal state below 13~K and then to a ferromagnetic-like state below 6~K. With evidence from ac susceptibility and powder neutron diffraction, we have identified the commensurate magnetic structure at 1.5 K, with ordered magnetic moments of $0.23(2)~\mu_{\mathrm{B}}$ on the V1 sites and $0.22(1)~\mu_{\mathrm{B}}$ on the V2 sites. These moments have ferromagnetic-like alignment but with a 39(8)$^{\circ}$ canting of the magnetic moments on the V2 sites away from the V$_4$ cluster. In the incommensurate magnetic phase that exists between 6 and 13 K, we provide a thorough and careful analysis of the cycloidal magnetic structure exhibited by this material using powder neutron diffraction., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We report the low-temperature properties of SrNd$_2$O$_4$, a geometrically frustrated magnet. Magnetisation and heat capacity measurements performed on polycrystalline samples indicate the appearance of a magnetically ordered state at $T_{\rm N}=2.28(4)$~K. Powder neutron diffraction measurements reveal that an \afm\ state with the propagation vector \QV\ is stabilised below this temperature. The magnetic order is incomplete, as only one of the two Nd$^{3+}$ sites carries a significant magnetic moment while the other site remains largely disordered. The presence of a disordered magnetic component below $T_{\rm N}$ is confirmed with polarised neutron diffraction measurements. In an applied magnetic field, the bulk properties measurements indicate a phase transition at about 30~kOe. We construct a tentative $H$-$T$ phase diagram of \sno\ from these measurements.

Double perovskite iridates $A_2$ZnIrO$_6$ ($A$ = alkaline or lanthanide) show complex magnetic behaviors ranging from weak ferromagnetism to successive antiferromagnetic transitions. Here we report the static ($dc$) and dynamic ($ac$) magnetic susceptibility, and neutron powder diffraction measurements for $A$ = La and Nd compounds to elucidate the magnetic ground state. Below 10~K, the $A$ = La compound is best described as canted iridium moments in an antiferromagnet arrangement with a propagation vector \textbf{k} = 0 and a net ferromagnetic component along the $c$-axis. On the other hand, Nd$_2$ZnIrO$_6$ is described well as an antiferromagnet with a propagation vector \textbf{k} = (1/2~1/2~0) below $T_\mathrm{N} \sim$ 17 K. Scattering from both the Nd and Ir magnetic sublattices were required to describe the data and both were found to lie almost completely within the $ab$-plane. $Dc$ susceptibility revealed a bifurcation between the zero-field-cooled and field-cooled curves below $\sim$13 K in Nd$_2$ZnIrO$_6$. A glassy state was ruled out by $ac$ susceptibility but detailed magnetic isotherms revealed the opening of the loop below 13~K. These results suggest a delicate balance exists between the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya, crystal field schemes, and $d$-$f$ interaction in this series of compounds., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. Polycrystalline members of the GaV$_4$S$_{8-y}$Se$_y$ family of materials with small levels of substitution between $0 \leq y \leq 0.5$ and $7.5 \leq y\leq 8$ have been synthesized in order to investigate their magnetic and structural properties. Substitutions to the skyrmion hosting parent compounds GaV$_4$S$_8$ and GaV$_4$Se$_8$, are found to suppress the temperature of the cubic to rhombohedral structural phase transition that occurs in both end compounds and to create a temperature region around the transition where there is a coexistence of these two phases. Similarly, the magnitude of the magnetization and temperature of the magnetic transition are both suppressed in all substituted compounds until a glassy-like magnetic state is realized. There is evidence from the $ac$ susceptibility data that skyrmion lattices with similar dynamics to those in GaV$_4$S$_8$ and GaV$_4$Se$_8$ are present in compounds with very low levels of substitution, $0 < y< 0.2$ and $7.8 < y < 8$, however, these states vanish at higher levels of substitution. The magnetic properties of these substituted materials are affected by the substitution altering exchange pathways and resulting in the creation of increasingly disordered magnetic states., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

The effect of substituting iron and zinc for cobalt in CaBaCo$_4$O$_7$ has been investigated using neutron diffraction and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The orthorhombic distortion present in the parent compound CaBaCo$_4$O$_7$ decreases with increasing the content of either Fe or Zn. The samples CaBaCo$_3$ZnO$_7$ and CaBaCo$_{4-x}$Fe$_x$O$_7$ with $x \leq 1.5$ are metrically hexagonal but much better refinements in the neutron diffraction patterns are obtained using an orthorhombic unit cell. The two types of substitution have opposite effects on the structural and magnetic properties. Fe atoms preferentially occupy the sites at the triangular layer. Thus, the replacement of Co by Fe supresses the ferrimagnetic ordering and CaBaCo$_{4-x}$Fe$_x$O$_7$ samples are antiferromagnetically ordered with a new propagation vector k=(1/3,0,0). However, the Zn atoms prefer occupying the Kagome layer, which is very detrimental for the long range magnetic interactions giving rise to a magnetic glass. The oxidation state of iron and zinc is found to be 3+ and 2+, respectively, independently of the content. Therefore, the average Co oxidation state changes accordingly with the Fe$^{3+}$ or Zn$^{2+}$ doping. Also, x-ray absorption spectroscopy data confirms the different preferential occupation for both Fe and Zn cations. The combined information obtained by neutron diffraction and x-ray absorption spectroscopy indicates that cobalt atoms can be either in a fluctuating Co$^{2+}$/Co$^{3+}$ valence state or, alternatively, Co$^{2+}$ and Co$^{3+}$ ions being randomly distributed in the lattice. These results explain the occurrence of local disorder in the CoO$_4$ tetrahedra obtained by EXAFS. An anomaly in the lattice parameters and an increase in the local disorder is observed only at the ferrimagnetic transition for CaBaCo$_4$O$_7$ revealing the occurrence of local magneto-elastic coupling.

Comprehensive muon spin rotation/relaxation (muSR) and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) studies supported via bulk measurements have been performed on the ordered double perovskite Sr2YbRuO6 to investigate the nature of the magnetic ground state. Two sharp transitions at TN1 ~ 42 K and TN2 ~ 36 K have been observed in the static and dynamic magnetization measurements, coinciding with the heat capacity data. In order to confirm the origin of the observed phase transitions and the magnetic ground state, microscopic evidences are presented here. An initial indication of long-range magnetic ordering comes from a sharp drop in the muon initial asymmetry and a peak in the relaxation rate near TN1. NPD confirms that the magnetic ground state of Sr2YbRuO6 consists of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with interpenetrating lattices of parallel Yb3+ and Ru5+ moments lying in the ab-plane and adopting a A-type AFM structure. Intriguingly, a small but remarkable change is observed in the long-range ordering parameters at TN2 confirming the presence of a weak spin reorientation (i.e. change in spin configuration) transition of Ru and Yb moments, as well as a change in the magnetic moment evolution of the Yb3+ spins at TN2. The temperature dependent behaviour of the Yb3+ and Ru5+ moments suggests that the 4d-electrons of Ru5+ play a dominating role in stabilizing the long range ordered magnetic ground state in the double perovskite Sr2YbRuO6 whereas only the Yb3+ moments show an arrest at TN2. The observed magnetic structure and the presence of a ferromagnetic interaction between Ru- and Yb- ions are explained with use of the Goodenough-Kanamori-Anderson (GKA) rules. Possible reasons for the presence of the second magnetic phase transition and of a compensation point in the magnetization data are linked to competing mechanisms of magnetic anisotropy., Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures

In the heavy-fermion system $Yb_2Pd_2In_{1-x}Sn_x$, the interplay of crystal-field splitting, Kondo effect, and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions leads to complex chemical-, pressure-, and magnetic-field phase diagrams, still to be explored in full detail. By using a series of techniques, we show that even modest changes of parameters other than temperature are sufficient to induce multiple quantum-critical transitions in this highly susceptible heavy-fermion family. In particular, we show that, above $\sim 10$ kbar, hydrostatic pressure not only induces an antiferromagnetic phase at low temperature, but it likely leads to a reorientation of the Yb magnetic moments and/or the competition among different antiferromagnetic configurations.

Features of low dimensional magnetism resulting from a square-net arrangement of Co atoms in trirutile CoTa$_2$O$_6$ is studied in the present work by means of density functional theory and is compared with the experimental results of specific heat and neutron diffraction. The small total energy differences between the ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) configuration of CoTa$_2$O$_6$ shows that competing magnetic ground states exist, with the possibility of transition from FM to AFM phase at low temperature. Our calculation further suggests the semi-conducting behavior for CoTa$_2$O$_6$ with a band gap of $\sim$0.41 eV. The calculated magnetic anisotropy energy is $\sim$2.5 meV with its easy axis along the [100] (in-plane) direction. Studying the evolution of magnetism in Co$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$Ta$_2$O$_6$ (x = 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 1). it is found that the sharp AFM transition exhibited by CoTa$_2$O$_6$ at $T_N$ = 6.2 K in its heat capacity vanishes with Mg-dilution, indicating the obvious effect of weakening the superexchange pathways of Co. The current specific heat study reveals the robust nature of $T_N$ for CoTa$_2$O$_6$ in applied magnetic fields. Clear indication of short-range magnetism is obtained from the magnetic entropy, however, diffuse components are absent in neutron diffraction data. At $T_N$, CoTa$_2$O$_6$ enters a long-range ordered magnetic state which can be described using a propagation vector, (1/4, 1/4, 0). Upon Mg-dilution at $x \geq$0.1, the long-range ordered magnetism is destroyed. We study magnetic behaviour of the Yb$^{3+}$ ions on a frustrated pyrochlore lattice in the spinel {\CYS}. The crystal-electric field parameters deduced from high-energy inelastic neutron scattering reveal well-isolated ytterbium ground state doublet with a weakly Ising character. Magnetic order studied by powder neutron diffraction evolves from the $XY$-type antiferromagnetic $\Gamma_5$ state to a splayed ice-like ferromagnet (both with k=0) in applied magnetic field with $B_c$=3 T. Low-energy inelastic neutron scattering identifies weakly dispersive magnetic bands around 0.72 meV starting at $\mid\bf{Q}\mid$ = 1.1 \AA$^{-1}$~ at zero field, which diminish with field and vanish above 3 T. We explain the observed magnetic behaviour in framework of the nearest-neighbour anisotropic exchange model for effective $S=1/2$ Kramers doublets on the pyrochlore lattice. The estimated exchanges position the {\CYS} spinel close to the phase boundary between the $\Gamma_5$ and splayed ferromagnet states, similar to the Yb-pyrochlores suggesting an important role of the competition between these phases., Comment: 24 pages, 7 Figures

The magnetic ground state of double perovskite Sr2DyRuO6 has been investigated using muon spin rotation and relaxation (muSR), neutron powder diffraction (NPD) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS), in addition to heat capacity and magnetic susceptibility (ac and dc) measurements. A clear signature of a long-range ordered magnetic ground state has been observed in the heat capacity data, which exhibit two sharp anomalies at 39.5 and 36 K found as well in the magnetic data. Further confirmation of long-range magnetic ordering comes from a sharp drop in the muon initial asymmetry and a peak in the relaxation rate at 40 K, along with a weak anomaly near 36 K. Based on temperature dependent NPD, the low temperature magnetic structure contains two interpenetrating lattices of Dy and Ru5, forming an antiferromagnetic ground state below 39.5 K with magnetic propagation vector k = (0,0,0). The magnetic moments of Dy and Ru at 3.5 K are pointing along the crystallographic b-axis with values of muDy = 4.92(10) muB and muRu = 1.94(7) muB, respectively. The temperature dependence of the Ru moments follows a mean field type behaviour, while that of the Dy moments exhibits a deviation indicating that the primary magnetic ordering is induced by the order of the 4d electrons of Ru rather than that of its proper 4f Dy electrons. The origin of the second anomaly observed in the heat capacity data at 36.5 K must be connected to a very small spin reorientation as the NPD studies do not reveal any clear change in the observed magnetic Bragg peaks positions or intensities between these two transitions. INS measurements reveal the presence of crystal field excitations (CEF) in the paramagnetic state with overall CEF splitting of 73.8 meV, in agreement with the point change model calculations., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures

The rare-earth based ternary intermetallic compounds $R_2TX_3$ ($R$ = rare-earth, $T$ = transition-metal, $X$ = Si, Ge, Ga, In) have attracted considerable interest due to a wide range of interesting low temperature properties. Here we investigate the magnetic state of Nd$_{2}$PdSi$_{3}$ using neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS). This compound appears anomalous among the $R_{2}$PdSi$_{3}$ series, since it was proposed to order ferromagnetically, whereas others in this series are antiferromagnets. Although some members of the $R_2TX_3$ series have been reported to form ordered superstructures, our data are well described by Nd$_{2}$PdSi$_{3}$ adopting the AlB$_2$-type structure with a single Nd site, and we do not find evidence for superlattice peaks in neutron diffraction. Our results confirm the onset of long range magnetic order below $T_0=17$~K, where the whole sample enters the ordered state. Neutron diffraction measurements establish the presence of a ferromagnetic component in this compound, as well as an antiferromagnetic one which has a propagation vector $\mathbf{k_2}=(1/2,1/2,1/4-\delta)$ with a temperature dependent $\delta\approx0.02-0.04$, and moments orientated exclusively along the $c$-axis. $\mu$SR measurements suggest that these components coexist on a microscopic level, and therefore the magnetic structure of Nd$_{2}$PdSi$_{3}$ is predominantly ferromagnetic, with a sinusoidally modulated antiferromagnetic contribution which reaches a maximum amplitude at 11~K, and becomes smaller upon further decreasing the temperature. INS results show the presence of crystalline-electric field (CEF) excitations above $T_0$, and from our analysis we propose a CEF level scheme., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Bulk studies have revealed a first-order valence phase transition in Ba$_2$PrRu$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$O$_6$ ($0.10 \le x \le 0.25$), which is absent in the parent compounds with $x = 0$ (Pr$^{3+}$) and $x =1$ (Pr$^{4+}$), which exhibit antiferromagnetic order with transition temperatures $T_{\rm N} = 120$ and 72 K, respectively. In the present study, we have used magnetization, heat capacity, neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering and x-ray absorption measurements to investigate the nature of the Pr ion in $x =0.1$. The magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity of $x =0.1$ show a clear sign of the first order valence phase transition below 175 K, where the Pr valence changes from 3+ to 4+. Neutron diffraction analysis reveals that $x =0.1$ crystallizes in a monoclinic structure with space group $P2_1/n$ at 300 K, but below 175 K two phases coexist, the monoclinic having the Pr ion in a 3+ valence state and a cubic one ($Fm\overline{3}m$) having the Pr ion in a 4+ valence state. Clear evidence of an antiferromagnetic ordering of the Pr and Ru moments is found in the monoclinic phase of the $x = 0.1$ compound below 110 K in the neutron diffraction measurements. Meanwhile the cubic phase remains paramagnetic down to 2 K, a temperature below which heat capacity and susceptibility measurements reveal a ferromagnetic ordering. High energy inelastic neutron scattering data reveal well-defined high-energy magnetic excitations near 264 meV at temperatures below the valence transition. The high energy excitations are assigned to the Pr$^{4+}$ ions in the cubic phase and the low energy excitations to the Pr$^{3+}$ ions in the monoclinic phase. Barlowite, Cu$_{4}$(OH)$_{6}$FBr, has attracted much attention as the parent compound of a new series of quantum spin liquid candidates, Zn$_{x}$Cu$_{4-x}$(OH)$_{6}$FBr. While it is known to undergo a magnetic phase transition to a long-range ordered state at $T_{N} = 15$ K, there is still no consensus over either its nuclear or magnetic structures. Here, we use comprehensive powder neutron diffraction studies on deuterated samples of barlowite to demonstrate that the only space group consistent with the observed nuclear and magnetic diffraction at low-temperatures is the orthorhombic $Pnma$ space group. We furthermore conclude that the magnetic intensity at $T < T_{N}$ is correctly described by the $Pn^\prime m^\prime a$ magnetic space group, which crucially allows the ferromagnetic component observed in previous single-crystal and powder magnetisation measurements. As such, the magnetic structure of barlowite resembles that of the related material clinoatacamite, Cu$_{4}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$, the parent compound of the well-known quantum spin liquid candidate hebertsmithite, ZnCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, supplemental material

The ground state magnetic behaviour of Ce2(Pd0.8Ag0.2)2In and Ce2(Pd0.5Ag0.5)2In, found in the ferromagnetic branch of Ce2Pd2In, has been investigated by neutron powder diffraction at low temperature. Ce2(Pd0.8Ag0.2)2In is characterized by a ferromagnetic structure with the Ce moments aligned along the c-axis and values of 0.96(2) mB. The compound retains the P4/mbm throughout the magnetic transition, although the magnetic ordering is accompanied by a significant decrease of the lattice strain along [00l], suggesting a magnetostructural contribution. The magnetic behaviour of Ce2(Pd0.5Ag0.5)2In is very different; this compound exhibits an extremely reduced magnetic scattering contribution in the diffraction pattern, that can be ascribed to a different kind of ferromagnetic ordering, with extremely reduced magnetic moments (~ 0.1 mB) aligned along [0l0]. These results point to a competition between different types of magnetic correlations induced by Ag-substitution, giving rise to a magnetically frustrated scenario in Ce2(Pd0.5Ag0.5)2In., Comment: to be published in Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter

The role of slight changes of the chemical composition on antiferromagnetic ordering of Cr in rare-earth orthochoromites was investigated on a series of ceramic solid-solutions Ce$_{1-x}$Eu${_x}$O$_3$ where x varied from 0 to 1. Gradual replacement of Ce with Eu reduces the cell volume and acts equivalently to applying external pressure. Full replacement of Ce by Eu, on the other hand, reduces the N\'{e}el temperature from 260 K for CeCrO$_3$ to 178 K for EuCrO$_3$ as established by magnetization, heat capacity and neutron powder diffraction measurements. High resolution x-ray powder diffraction measurements on Ce$_{1-x}$Eu${_x}$O$_3$ and neutron powder diffraction studies on CeCrO$_3$ enable to correlate the magnetic properties of the Cr magnetic subsystem with the size of the lattice and minute changes of the bonding and torsion angles within and between the CrO$_6$ octahedra. We find that the sizes and the shapes of the CrO$6$ octahedra remain essentially unchanged as the size of the rare-earth cations is reduced whereas decreasing Cr - O - Cr bonding angles and increasing inclination of neighboring octahedra enable to compensate for the decreasing lattice size., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures

Magnetic systems with spins sitting on a lattice of corner sharing regular tetrahedra have been particularly prolific for the discovery of new magnetic states for the last two decades. The pyrochlore compounds have offered the playground for these studies, while little attention has been comparatively devoted to other compounds where the rare earth R occupies the same sub-lattice, e.g. the spinel chalcogenides CdR2X4 (X = S, Se). Here we report measurements performed on powder samples of this series with R = Yb using specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, neutron diffraction and muon-spin-relaxation measurements. The two compounds are found to be magnetically similar. They long-range order into structures described by the \Gamma_5 irreducible representation. The magnitude of the magnetic moment at low temperature is 0.77 (1) and 0.62 (1) mu_B for X = S and Se, respectively. Persistent spin dynamics is present in the ordered states. The spontaneous field at the muon site is anomalously small, suggesting magnetic moment fragmentation. A double spin-flip tunneling relaxation mechanism is suggested in the cooperative paramagnetic state up to 10 K. We provide here a significant extension of the NuGrid Set 1 models in mass coverage and toward lower metallicity, adopting the same physics assumptions. The combined data set now includes the initial masses M/Msun = 1, 1.65, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 12, 15, 20, 25 for Z = 0.02, 0.01, 0.006, 0.001, 0.0001 with alpha-enhanced composition for the lowest three metallicities. These models are computed with the MESA stellar evolution code and are evolved up to the AGB, the white dwarf stage, or until core collapse. The nucleosynthesis was calculated for all isotopes in post-processing with the NuGrid mppnp code. Explosive nucleosynthesis is based on semi-analytic 1D shock models. Metallicity-dependent mass loss, convective boundary mixing in low- and intermediate mass models and H and He core burning massive star models is included. Convective O-C shell mergers in some stellar models lead to the strong production of odd-Z elements P, Cl, K and Sc. In AGB models with hot dredge-up the convective boundary mixing efficiency is reduced to accommodate for its energetic feedback. In both low-mass and massive star models at the lowest metallicity H-ingestion events are observed and lead to i-process nucleosynthesis and substantial N-15 production. Atmospheric parameters and chemical compositions for ten stars with metallicities in the region of -2.2< [Fe/H] <-0.6 were precisely determined using high resolution, high signal to noise, spectra. For each star the abundances, for 14 to 27 elements, were derived using both LTE and NLTE approaches. In particular, differences by assuming LTE or NLTE are about 0.10 dex; depending on [Fe/H], Teff, gravity and element lines used in the analysis. We find that the O abundance has the largest error, ranging from 0.10 and 0.2 dex. The best measured elements are Cr, Fe, and Mn; with errors etween 0.03 and 0.11 dex. The stars in our sample were included in previous different observational work. We provide a consistent data analysis. The data dispersion introduced in the literature by different techniques and assumptions used by the different authors is within the observational errors, excepting for HD103095. We compare these results with stellar observations from different data sets and a number of theoretical galactic chemical evolution (GCE) simulations. We find a large scatter in the GCE results, used to study the origin of the elements. Within this scatter as found in previous GCE simulations, we cannot reproduce the evolution of the elemental ratios [Sc/Fe], [Ti/Fe], and [V/Fe] at different metallicities. The stellar yields from core collapse supernovae (CCSN) are likely primarily responsible for this discrepancy. Possible solutions and open problems are discussed., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures

We address the deficiency of odd-Z elements P, Cl, K and Sc in galactic chemical evolution models through an investigation of the nucleosynthesis of interacting convective O- and C shells in massive stars. 3D hydrodynamic simulations of O-shell convection with moderate C-ingestion rates show no dramatic deviation from spherical symmetry. We derive a spherically averaged diffusion coefficient for 1D nucleosynthesis simulations which show that such convective-reactive ingestion events can be a production site for P, Cl, K and Sc. An entrainment rate of $10^{-3}{{\rm M}_\odot}$/s features overproduction factors $OP_\mathrm{s} \approx 7$. Full O-C shell mergers in our 1D stellar evolution massive star models have overproduction factors $OP_\mathrm{m}>1 \mathrm{dex}$ but for such cases 3D hydrodynamic simulations suggest deviations from spherical symmetry. p-process species can be produced with overproduction factors of $OP_\mathrm{m}>1 \mathrm{dex}$, e.g. for $^{130,132}Ba$. Using the uncertain prediction of the $15{{\rm M}_\odot}$, $Z=0.02$ massive star model ($OP_\mathrm{m} \approx 15$) as representative for merger or entrainment convective-reactive events involving O- and C-burning shells, and assume that such events occur in more than 50% of all stars, our chemical evolution models reproduce the observed Galactic trends of the odd-Z elements., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

A quantum spin liquid is a novel state of matter characterized by quantum entanglement and the absence of any broken symmetry. In condensed matter, the frustrated rare-earth pyrochlore magnets Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, so-called spin ices, exhibit a classical spin liquid state with fractionalized thermal excitations (magnetic monopoles). Evidence for a quantum spin ice, in which the magnetic monopoles become long range entangled and an emergent quantum electrodynamics arises, seems within reach. The magnetic properties of the quantum spin ice candidate Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ have eluded a global understanding and even the presence or absence of static magnetic order at low temperatures is controversial. Here we show that sensitivity to pressure is the missing key to the low temperature behaviour of Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. By combining neutron diffraction and muon spin relaxation on a stoichiometric sample under pressure, we evidence a magnetic transition from a disordered, non-magnetic, ground state to a splayed ferromagnetic ground state.

The development of short- and long-range magnetic order induced in a frustrated zig-zag ladder compound SrDy2O4 by an applied field is studied using neutron diffraction techniques. In zero field, SrDy2O4 lacks long-range magnetic order down to temperatures as low as 60 mK, and the observed powder neutron diffraction (PND) patterns are dominated by very broad diffuse scattering peaks. Single crystal neutron diffraction reveals that the zero-field magnetic structure consists of a collection of antiferromagnetic chains running along the c axis and that there is very little correlation between the chains in the ab plane. In an applied magnetic field, the broad diffuse scattering features in PND are gradually replaced by much sharper peaks, however, the pattern remains rather complex, reflecting the highly anisotropic nature of SrDy2O4. Single crystal neutron diffraction shows that a moderate field applied along the b axis induces an up-up-down magnetic order associated with a 1/3-magnetisation plateau, in which magnetic correlation length in the ab plane is significantly increased, but it nevertheless remains finite. The resolution limited k = 0 peaks associated with a ferromagnetic arrangement appear in powder and single crystal neutron diffraction patterns in fields of 2.5 T and above., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

In this Letter we report high-resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscope analysis of Mn-substituted LaFeAsO samples, demonstrating that a static incommensurate modulated structure develops across the low-temperature orthorhombic phase, whose modulation wave-vector depends on the Mn content. The incommensurate structural distortion is likely originating from a charge-density-wave instability, a periodic modulation of the density of conduction electrons associated with a modulation of the atomic positions. Our results add a new component in the physics of Fe-based superconductors, indicating that the density wave ordering is charge-driven., Comment: To be published in the Physical Review Letters

We report on the spin structure of the pyrochlore iridate Nd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ that could be directly determined by means of powder neutron diffraction. Our magnetic structure refinement unravels a so-called all-in/all-out magnetic structure that appears in both, the Nd and the Ir sublattice. The ordered magnetic moments at 1.8 K amount to 0.34(1) $\mu_\mathrm{B}$/Ir$^{4+}$ and 1.27(1) $\mu_\mathrm{B}$/Nd$^{3+}$. The Nd$^{3+}$ moment size at 1.8 K is smaller than that expected for the Nd$^{3+}$ ground state doublet. On the other hand, the size of the ordered moments of the Ir$^{4+}$ ions at 1.8 K agrees very well with the value expected for a $J_\mathrm{eff}$ = 1/2 state based on the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling in this system. The crystal structure, magnetic ground state, and the temperature dependent microscopic spin-spin correlations of the frustrated honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet Na2Co2TeO6 have been investigated by powder neutron diffraction. A three dimensional (3D) long-range antiferromagnetic ordering has been found below TN ~ 24.8 K. The magnetic ground state, determined to be zigzag antiferromagnet [k = (1/2 0 0)], occurs due to the competing exchange interactions up to third nearest neighbors within the honeycomb lattice. The exceptional existence of a limited magnetic correlation length along the c axis (perpendicular to the honeycomb layers in the ab planes) has been found within the 3D long-range ordered state, even at 1.8 K, well below TN. The observed limited correlation along the c axis is explained by the disorder distribution of the Na ions within the intermediate layers. The reduced ordered moments mCo(1) = 2.77(3) muB/Co2+ and mCo(2) = 2.45(2) muB/Co2+ at 1.8 K reflect the persistence of spin fluctuations in the ordered state. Above TN, the presence of short-range magnetic correlations, manifested by broad diffuse magnetic peaks, has been found. Reverse Monte Carlo analysis of the experimental diffuse magnetic scattering data reveals that the spin correlations are mainly confined within the 2D honeycomb layers (ab plane) with a correlation length of ~ 12 {\AA} at 25 K. The nature of spin arrangements is found to be similar in both the short-range and long-range ordered magnetic states. This implies that the short-range correlation grows with decreasing temperature and leads to the zigzag AFM ordering at T < TN. The present study provides a comprehensive picture of the magnetic correlations over the temperature range above and below TN and their relation to the crystal structure. The $s$-process nucleosynthesis in Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars depends on the modeling of convective boundaries. We present models and s-process simulations that adopt a treatment of convective boundaries based on the results of hydrodynamic simulations and on the theory of mixing due to gravity waves in the vicinity of convective boundaries. Hydrodynamics simulations suggest the presence of convective boundary mixing (CBM) at the bottom of the thermal pulse-driven convective zone. Similarly, convection-induced mixing processes are proposed for the mixing below the convective envelope during third dredge-up where the 13C pocket for the s process in AGB stars forms. In this work we apply a CBM model motivated by simulations and theory to models with initial mass $M = 2$ and $M = 3M_\odot$, and with initial metal content Z = 0.01 and Z = 0.02. As reported previously, the He-intershell abundance of 12C and 16O are increased by CBM at the bottom of pulse-driven convection zone. This mixing is affecting the $^{22}Ne(\alpha,n)^{25}Mg$ activation and the s-process effciency in the 13C-pocket. In our model CBM at the bottom of the convective envelope during the third dredgeup represents gravity wave mixing. We take further into account that hydrodynamic simulations indicate a declining mixing efficiency already about a pressure scale height from the convective boundaries, compared to mixing-length theory. We obtain the formation of the 13C-pocket with a mass of $\approx 10^{-4}M_\odot$. The final $s$-process abundances are characterized by 0.36 < [s=Fe] < 0.78 and the heavy-to-light s-process ratio is 0.23 < [hs=ls] < 0.45. We report ac susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron scattering measurements on a dipolar-coupled antiferromagnet LiYbF$_4$. For the thermal transition, the order-parameter critical exponent is found to be 0.20(1) and the specific-heat critical exponent -0.25(1). The exponents agree with the 2D XY/h$_4$ universality class despite the lack of apparent two-dimensionality in the structure. The order-parameter exponent for the quantum phase transitions is found to be 0.35(1) corresponding to (2+1)D. These results are in line with those found for LiErF$_4$ which has the same crystal structure, but largely different T$_N$, crystal field environment and hyperfine interactions. Our results therefore experimentally establish that the dimensional reduction is universal to quantum dipolar antiferromagnets on a distorted diamond lattice., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

In this paper we present a large-scale sensitivity study of reaction rates in the main component of the $s$ process. The aim of this study is to identify all rates, which have a global effect on the $s$ process abundance distribution and the three most important rates for the production of each isotope. We have performed a sensitivity study on the radiative $^{13}$C-pocket and on the convective thermal pulse, sites of the $s$ process in AGB stars.
