The accident at work is the result of a chain of events in which something has improperly worked and has caused injuries. Objective: describe characteristics of workers who suffered a work-related accident in the upper limbs and received treatment by the health service of the Aragua National Institute of Prevention Occupational Health and Safety (NIPOHS) during year 2010. Subjects and Methods: this is a descriptive, retrospective, non-experimental, series of cases study. From a population of 299 workers with occupational accidents we included a sample of 133 patients through documentary review of their medical records. Results: 88% were male, mean age was 34.6 years old, 94% of them holding the job during less than 74 months; 51.1% completed secondary studies education. The dominant right hand was the most affected in 97 % of injured workers and 63.9% were part time employed. The companies were located in the municipalities of Girardot (27.8%), Sucre (15.8%), Ribas (8.3%). The main economic activities were: food processing (15%), construction (12%), services (12%) and 54.1% of the accidents were not declared to the NIPOHS, 37.5% of workers did not use personal protective equipment, 18% of lesions were classified as moderate and 54.7 % had no registration of its severity. The most frequent injuries were as follows: bone fracture (27.8%) and amputation (12%) and the affected body areas were fingers (12%) and hands (6%). Conclusions: male workers are more affected in work-related accidents and hand fingers the anatomical region predominantly involved. It was found that a high percentage of accidents were not declared to the NIPOHS, thus generating an important under-registration of cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This is a descriptive, cross*sectional, nonexperimental study of 76 newborn children (NB) (Maternity and Children Hospital Jose Maria Vargas, Valencia, Venezuela): 40 of them were delivered by mothers with allergy history and 36 without these antecedents. We quantified serum CD23s, IgE and the number of CD23m (+) B lymphocytes in the umbilical chord blood and these results were correlated with pregnancy exposure to house dust. CD23s - serum IgE was assayed by ELISA (Smartest Diagnostics). CD23m (blood) by flow cytometer Becton-Dickinson FACScan. Maternal age of total group (mean ± SD): 21.65 ± 4.88 years old. Male NB babies were 40.8%. Exposure to dust during pregnancy accounted for 81.6% and 40 NB had associated a maternal history of allergy (+). In total group: CD23s was 648 ± 248.6 pg / ml, 5.5 ± 9.7 IU IgE / mL, B lymphocytes CD23m (+): 316 ± 189.7 cells / uL. CD23s: NB with maternal history of allergy (+): 727.6 ± 291.7 pg / mL NB from mothers with no history: 561 43 ± 1504 pg / mL (p = 0.0012). CD23m in NB from mothers with history: 294 ± 1472 cells / uL. NB in mothers without allergy antecedents: 340.5 ± 227.6 cells / uL (p = 0.14), No statistical correlation was found between: CD23m and CD23s with IgE (total group). Several international investigations have established echocardiographic modifications of the heart's anatomic structure in high performance athletes related to training time. The objective of this study was to evaluate and correlate echocardiographic findings of cyclists of Carabobo State's selection. This is a descriptive, observational and correlational study in a population of 60 high performance bike runners. Out from total, 31 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. It was made a clinical history and 2D echocardiogram. Thickness of interventricular septum, posterior and lateral wall of left ventricle was measured and ejection fraction calculated and then correlated to training time. We found a positive and highly statistical significant correlation between posterior wall thickness of left ventricle and thickness of interventricular septum (r = 0.98; p = 0.001), posterior wall of left ventricle and training time (r = 0.77; p = 0.001) and between interventricular septum thickness and training time (r = 0.79; p = 0.001). Infantile malnutrition is one of the more frequent pathologies affecting underdeveloped societies. According to the World Health Organization of United Nations, during the year 2002, 10.5 million children younger than 5 years old died; because of this cause. Venezuela in the last 30 years has suffered delay of the economic and social growth which aggravates malnutrition. This is a retrospective, descriptive investigation whose objective was to describe the characteristics of malnourished children; considering age, sex, social stratum, stage, ethiopathogenics and clinical features. Studied group consisted of 51 malnourished children attended at A. Prince Lara hospital of Puerto Cabello, Venezuela. Results revealed that 55% were male. Malnutrition was observed in 47% of 0-1 years-old group, 76% came from Carabobo. Graffar social stratum IV was predominant, 60.78%. Severe malnutrition incidence was 47%, moderate 12% and mild 41%. Severe malnutrition frequency was: marasmus 54%, mixed malnutrition 33% and Kwashiorkor 13%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
