1. Deep in the Knotted Black Hole

Abstract

We consider the transition rate of a freely falling Unruh-DeWitt (UDW) detector, coupled linearly to a massless scalar quantum field prepared in the Hartle-Hawking-Israel state, as a probe of the interior of a black hole. Specifically, we consider the transition rate of a detector in the spinless Ba\~nados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole as it freely falls toward and across the horizon and compare it to the corresponding situation for an $\mathbb{R}\text{P}^{2}$ geon. Both the BTZ black hole and its geon counterpart are quotients of $\text{AdS}_3$ spacetime that are identical exterior to the horizon but have different interior topologies. We find outside the horizon that the rates are qualitatively similar, but with the amplitude in the geon spacetime larger than in the BTZ case. Once the detector crosses the horizon, there are notable distinctions characterized by different discontinuities in the temporal derivative of the response rate. These discontinuities can appear outside the horizon if the detector is switched on at a sufficiently early time, within the past white hole horizon. 2. NMR metabolomics as a complementary tool to brix-acid tests for navel orange quality control of long-term cold storage.

Abstract

Quality control plays a crucial role in maintaining the reputation of agricultural organizations by ensuring that their products meet the expected standards and preventing any loss during the packaging process. A significant responsibility of quality control is conducting periodic product assessments. However, subjective interpretation during physical inspections of fruits can lead to variability in reporting. To counter this, assessing total soluble solids (Brix) and percent acidity (Acid) can provide a more objective approach. Nevertheless, it is essential to note that many fruit metabolites can impact these parameters. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, particularly 1H-NMR, has become a popular tool for quality control in recent years due to its precision, sample preservation, and high throughput analysis. This manuscript investigates if the standard Brix/Acid tests are directly related to the levels of metabolites during cold storage. Using citrus as the model system, a metabolomics analysis was conducted to identify patterns in the cold storage metabolite profiles of the juice, albedo, and flavedo tissues. The results show that Brix (or total dissolved solids) correlates well with sucrose, glucose, and fructose levels and moderately with choline levels. Acid (percent acidity) levels displayed a negative correlation with both fructose and choline levels. Interestingly, the formate levels were susceptible to storage time and directly related to Acid measurements. This study suggests metabolomics could be a complementary technique to quality control of fruits in cold storage, especially with cost-effective desktop NMR spectrometers.

3. Accelerated detector in a superposed spacetime

Abstract

In pursuit of a full-fledged theory of quantum gravity, operational approaches offer insights into quantum-gravitational effects produced by quantum superposition of different spacetimes not diffeomorphic to one another. Recent work applies this approach to superpose cylindrically identified Minkowski spacetimes (i.e. periodic boundary conditions) with different characteristic circumferences, where a two-level detector coupled to a quantum field residing in the spacetime exhibits resonance peaks in response at certain values of the superposed length ratios. Here, we extend this analysis to a superposition of cylindrically identified Rindler spacetimes, considering a two-level detector constantly accelerated in the direction orthogonal to the compact dimension. Similarly to previous work, we find resonance peaks in the detector response at rational ratios of the superposed compactified lengths, which we observe to be accentuated by the acceleration of the detector. Furthermore, for the first time we confirm the detailed balance condition due to acceleration in a superposition of spacetimes, commensurate with the Unruh effect in a single spacetime state. The resonant structure of detector response in the presence of event horizons, for the first time observed in 3+1 dimensions, may offer clues to the nature of black hole entropy in the full theory of quantum gravity., Comment: 8 + 12 pages, 7 + 2 figures

4. Singular excitement beyond the horizon of a rotating black hole

Abstract

Previous studies have shown that an Unruh-DeWitt (UDW) detector, when coupled linearly to a massless scalar field and permitted to fall radially into certain black holes, will exhibit non-monotonicity in its transition properties near the horizon. Specifically, the transition probability of a detector freely falling into a (3+1)-dimensional Schawrzschild black hole, when considering the Unruh and Hartle-Hawking vacuum states, was shown to possess a local extremum at horizon crossing [K.K. Ng et al., New J. Phys. 24 (2022) 103018]. The transition rate of a detector falling into a static (2+1)-dimensional Ba\~nados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole, for the Hartle-Hawking state, was also found to have multiple local extrema near the horizon under certain parameter settings [M.R. Preciado-Rivas et al., arXiv:2402.14908v1]. These discoveries are of interest, as they suggest that the event horizon of a black hole may be distinguishable to a local probe when QFT effects are included. In this paper, we explore the problem of a UDW detector falling freely into a rotating BTZ black hole. We numerically compute the detector's transition rate for different values of black hole mass, black hole angular momentum, detector energy gap, and field boundary conditions at infinity. Our results lead to a more generalized description of the behaviour of particle detectors in BTZ black hole spacetime, from which the previous non-rotating BTZ case can be retrieved in the limit as angular momentum vanishes.

5. More Excitement Across the Horizon

Abstract

An Unruh-DeWitt (UDW) detector falling radially into a four-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole, coupled linearly to a massless scalar field that has been prepared in the Hartle-Hawking or Unruh state, has recently been shown to exhibit a local extremum in its transition probability near the black hole horizon [K.K. Ng et al., New J. Phys. 24 (2022) 103018]. We show that a similar phenomenon is present in the transition rate of a UDW detector falling radially into a spinless Ba\~nados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole, with the scalar field prepared in the Hartle-Hawking state. We give extensive numerical results as a function of the detector's energy gap, the black hole's mass, and the detector's drop-off radius. Abstract

Fragile X syndrome, the major cause of inherited intellectual disability among men, is due to deficiency of the synaptic functional regulator FMR1 protein (FMRP), encoded by the FMRP translational regulator 1 (FMR1) gene. FMR1 alternative splicing produces distinct transcripts that may consequently impact FMRP functional roles. In transcripts without exon 14 the translational reading frame is shifted. For deepening current knowledge of the differential expression of Fmr1 exon 14 along the rat nervous system development, we conducted a descriptive study employing quantitative RT-PCR and BLAST of RNA-Seq datasets. We observed in the rat forebrain progressive decline of total Fmr1 mRNA from E11 to P112 albeit an elevation on P3; and exon-14 skipping in E17-E20 with downregulation of the resulting mRNA. We tested if the reduced detection of messages without exon 14 could be explained by nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) vulnerability, but knocking down UPF1, a major component of this pathway, did not increase their quantities. Conversely, it significantly decreased FMR1 mRNA having exon 13 joined with either exon 14 or exon 15 site A. The forebrain in the third embryonic week of the rat development is a period with significant skipping of Fmr1 exon 14. This alternative splicing event chronologically precedes a reduction of total Fmr1 mRNA, suggesting that it may be part of combinatorial mechanisms downregulating the gene's expression in the late embryonic period. The decay of FMR1 mRNA without exon 14 should be mediated by a pathway different from NMD. Finally, we provide evidence of FMR1 mRNA stabilization by UPF1, likely depending on FMRP.

Abstract

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a significant contributor to the growing concern of antibiotic resistant bacteria, especially given its stubborn persistence in hospitals and other health care facility settings. In combination with this characteristic of S. aureus (colloquially referred to as staph), MRSA presents an additional barrier to treatment and is now believed to have colonized two of every 100 people worldwide. According to the CDC, MRSA prevalence sits as high as 25-50% in countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States. Given the resistant nature of staph as well as its capability of evolving to compensate antibiotic treatment, controlling MRSA levels is more a matter of precautionary and defensive measures. This study examines the method of "search and isolation," which seeks to isolate MRSA positive patients in a hospital so as to decrease infection potential. Although this strategy is straightforward, the question of just whom to screen is of practical importance. We compare screening at admission to screening at discharge. To do this, we develop a mathematical model and use simulations to determine MRSA endemic levels in a hospital with either control measure implemented. We found that screening at discharge was the more effective method in controlling MRSA endemicity, but at the cost of a greater number of isolated patients., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Understanding, optimizing, and controlling the optical absorption process, exciton gemination, and electron-hole separation and conduction in low dimensional systems is a fundamental problem in materials science. However, robust and efficient methods capable of modelling the optical absorbance of low dimensional macromolecular systems and providing physical insight into the processes involved have remained elusive. We employ a highly efficient linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAOs) representation of the Kohn--Sham (KS) orbitals within time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) in the reciprocal space ($k$) and frequency ($\omega$) domains, as implemented within our LCAO-TDDFT-$k$-$\omega$ code, and apply the derivative discontinuity correction of the exchange functional $\Delta_x$ to the KS eigenenergies. In so doing we are able to provide a semi-quantitative description of the optical absorption, conductivity, and polarizability spectra for prototypical 0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D systems within the optical limit ($\|\bf{q}\|\to0^+$) as compared to both available measurements and from solving the Bethe$-$Salpeter equation with quasiparticle $G_0 W_0$ eigenvalues ($G_0 W_0$-BSE). Specifically, we consider 0D fullerene (C$_{60}$), 1D metallic (10,0) and semiconducting (10,10) single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), 2D graphene (GR) and phosphorene (PN), and 3D rutile (R-TiO$_2$) and anatase (A-TiO$_2$). For each system, we also employ the spatially resolved electron-hole density to provide direct physical insight into the nature of their optical excitations. These results demonstrate the reliability, applicability, efficiency, and robustness of our LCAO-TDDFT-$k$-$\omega$ code, and open the pathway to the computational design of macromolecular systems for optoelectronic, photovoltaic, and photocatalytic applications $in$ $silico$., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

A necessary first step in the development of technologies such as artificial photosynthesis is understanding the photoexcitation process within the basic building blocks of naturally-occurring light harvesting complexes (LHCs). The most important of these building blocks in biological LHCs such as LHC II from green plants are the chlorophyll $a$ (Chl $a$) and chlorophyll $b$ (Chl $b$) chromophores dispersed throughout the protein matrix. However, efforts to describe such systems are still hampered by the lack of computationally efficient and accurate methods that are able to describe optical absorption in large biomolecules. In this work we employ a highly efficient linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAOs) to represent the Kohn--Sham (KS) wave functions at the density functional theory (DFT) level and perform time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) in either the reciprocal space and frequency domain (LCAO-TDDFT-$k$-$\omega$) or real space and time (LCAO-TDDFT-$r$-$t$) calculations of the optical absorption spectra of Chl $a$ and $b$ monomers and dimers. We find our LCAO-TDDFT-$k$-$\omega$ and LCAO-TDDFT-$r$-$t$ calculations reproduce results obtained with a plane wave (PW) representation of the KS wave functions (PW-TDDFT-$k$-$\omega$), but with a significant reduction in computational effort. Moreover, by applying the GLLB-SC derivative discontinuity correction $\Delta_x$ to the KS eigenenergies, with both LCAO-TDDFT-$k$-$\omega$ and LCAO-TDDFT-$r$-$t$ methods we are able to semi-quantitatively reproduce the experimentally measured photoinduced dissociation (PID) results. 23. Optical Absorption and Energy Loss Spectroscopy of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract

The recent development of efficient chirality sorting techniques has opened the way to the use of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in a plethora of nanoelectronic, photovoltaic, and optoelectronic applications. However, to understand the excitation processes undergone by SWCNTs, it is necessary to have highly efficient and accurate computational methods to describe their optical and electronic properties, methods which have until now been unavailable. Here we employ linear combinations of atomic orbitals (LCAOs) to represent the Kohn-Sham (KS) wavefunctions and perform highly efficient time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations in the frequency domain using our LCAO-TDDFT-$k$-$\omega$ code to model the optical absorbance and energy loss spectra and spatial distribution of the exciton charge densities in SWCNTs. By applying the GLLB-SC derivative discontinuity correction to the KS eigenenergies, we reproduce the measured $E_{11}$ and $E_{22}$ transitions within $\sigma \lesssim 70$ meV and the optical absorbance and electron energy loss spectra semi-quantitatively for a set of fifteen semiconducting and four metallic chirality sorted SWCNTs. Furthermore, our calculated electron hole density difference $\Delta \rho(\textbf{r}, \omega)$ resolves the spatial distribution of the measured excitations in SWCNTs. These results open the path towards the computational design of optimized SWCNT nanoelectronic, photovoltaic, and optoelectronic devices $\textit{in silico}$., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Performance of alumina-supported catalyst systems are significantly affected by how the tetrahedral (Al-O4) and octahedral (Al-O6) coordination are mixed and blended with each other. Characterisation of aluminium-oxygen coordination is thus important to understand how catalysts interact with alumina at the microscopic level. Here we report the application of two advanced electron microscopy techniques on aluminium-oxygen coordination. The first technique is electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) that can reveal detailed electronic structure profile of aluminium valence band to analyse how aluminium is coordinated by oxygen. The second technique is pair distribution function (PDF) based on electron diffraction (ED), employed to measure aluminium-oxygen bond lengths associated with the coordination geometry.
