Abstract

A silicon micromechanical torsional oscillator is used to measure the hysteresis loops of two manganite La_0.67Ca_0.33MnO_3 nanotubes at different temperatures, applying an external field along its main axes. These structures are composed of nanograins with a ferromagnetic core surrounded by a dead layer. Micromagnetic calculations based on the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, are performed to validate a simple model that allows for quantitatively describing the ferromagnetic behavior of the system. Further simulations are used to analyze the experimental data more in depth and to calculate the coercive field, the saturation and remanent magnetizations, and the effective magnetic volume for single nanotubes, over a wide temperature range., Comment: 11 pages and 8 figures

Abstract

We present a micron-sized induction magnetometer designed to measure the magnetic response of superconducting mesoscopic samples. The device is manufactured using the Memscap PolyMUMPs process and consists of two octagonal planar parallel micro-coils covering an area of 240 microns X 240 microns, which are separated by only 2.75 microns. We show that this design is sufficiently sensitive to detect the Meissner transition at zero dc field, of a high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 disk of 40 microns in diameter and 1 micron in thicknesses., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

COPD patients may develop varying degrees of emphysematous destruction of the lungs. A pathophysiological role for miRNAs in COPD has been suggested in several studies. We examined changes in microRNAs expression profile during 10 years follow-up in relation to COPD progression.Methods: Clinical and lung function parameters were registered from every subject included in the study. miRNAs expression was determined in 14 serum samples from 7 patients in two moments (4 smokers with COPD (BODE cohort) and 3 smokers without COPD) by next generation sequencing (NGS) at baseline and after 10 years follow-up. A validation study was performed by qPCR in 20 patients with COPD (13 emphysema-diagnosed by CTscan) and 10 smoker controls at baseline and after 10 years follow-up. hsa-miRNA-20a-5p and hsa-let-7d-5p were used as endogenous controls.Results: A total of 198 miRNAs (≥ 10TPM) were identified by NGS. Between these, hsa-miR-1246 was found significantly downregulated in COPD patients after 10 years when compared to baseline (p< 0.0001, FDR=0.05). Seventy-five percent of these patients had an emphysema diagnose. In the validation analysis, when analyzed longitudinally, hsa-miR-1246 was significantly downregulated in COPD patients with emphysema after 10 years (p= 0.019). However, no association was found between the expression of miR-1246 and any other lung function parameters (FEV1, PaO2, DLCO, IC/TLC) within the follow-up period. GO and KEGG enrichment analysis revealed miR-1246 to be associated with target genes in several pathways involved in COPD/emphysema development.Conclusion: Our findings suggest that hsa-miR-1246 may act as a biomarker of emphysema in COPD. Abstract

A nanostructured device based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) loaded with a cross-linked chitosan (CH) emulsion, soy lecithin, and peppermint essential oil (Mentha piperita) was designed for topical applications using an electrospinning instrument coupled to a rotary drum collector. Different suspensions were obtained by varying the PVA to emulsion ratio (PVA:Em) 87.5:12.5, 82:18, and 75:25, using a PVA solution as a control. ATR-FTIR spectra confirmed the interactions among the components of the system. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the mats evinced that the aligned fiber diameter decreased with higher proportions of emulsion while dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) revealed a decrease in the storage modulus. The entrapment of the functionalized emulsions not only improved the elongation of the matrices but also provided them with greater structural integrity compared to the single PVA matrix. The most favorable formulation in terms of mechanical properties was found to be the 82:18 ratio. After 1 h of close contact between the 82:18 matrix and a porcine skin explant, the latter was examined by confocal microscopy, which revealed the localization of the essential oil mainly on the surface of the stratum corneum (SC).However, after 7 h of contact, the distribution of the peppermint EO throughout the viable epidermis was observed, which was further supported by ATR-FTIR studies. Tailored electrospun matrices would have potential applications as devices for topical or transdermal treatments due to their vehiculization role that allows the diffusion of peppermint essential oil as a skin penetration enhancer.

24. Spinal cord stimulation with implanted epidural paddle lead relieves chronic axial low back pain

David A Stidd, Sergio Rivero, Martin E Weinand Division of Neurosurgery, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ, USA Introduction: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) provides significant relief for lumbosacral radiculopathy refractory to both medical and surgical treatment, but historically only offers limited relief for axial low back pain (LBP). We aim to evaluate the response of chronic axial LBP treated with SCS using a surgically implanted epidural paddle lead. Materials and methods: This is a retrospective review of a consecutive series of patients with exclusive LBP or predominant LBP associated with lower extremity (LE) pain evaluated and treated with SCS using an implanted paddle lead within the dorsal thoracic epidural space. Baseline LBP, and if present LE pain, were recorded using the visual analogue scale (VAS) at an initial evaluation. At a follow-up visit (a minimum of 12 months later), LBP and LE pain after a spinal cord stimulator implantation were again recorded using the VAS. Patients were also asked to estimate total LBP pain relief achieved. Results: Patients with either exclusive (n=7) or predominant (n=2) axial LBP were treated with SCS by implantation of a paddle lead at an average spine level of T9. The baseline VAS score for LBP was 7.2; after a follow-up of 20 months, the score decreased to 2.3 (P=0.003). The LE pain VAS score decreased from 7.5 to 0.0 (P=0.103). Patients also reported a subjective 66.4% decrease of their LBP at follow-up. There were no surgical complications. Conclusions: Axial LBP is refractory to many treatments, including SCS. SCS using a surgically implanted paddle electrode provides significant pain relief for chronic axial LPB, and is a safe treatment modality. Keywords: SCS, LBP, laminotomy, paddle electrodes

Abstract

Objective: To assess whether the combination of fixed-dose Oral Antidiabetic drugs (OA) in a single tablet compared to OA separated into 2 or more tablets is an effective strategy to improve adherence in insulin-dependent patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM2). Methods: This was a prospective, longitudinal, multi-center study, carried out in 3 primary care centers in Spain. One hundred and twenty patients treated with OA and insulin prescribed for insulin-dependent DM2 were included. A cluster randomization was performed based on two groups: (1) Control Group (CG): Sixty patients treated with two OA prescribed separately in different tablets, and (2) an Intervention Group (IG): Sixty patients treated with OA were with 2 drugs in combination at a fixed dose, in a single tablet. Three visits took place. AO Adherence was measured by using electronic monitors (MEMS). Average adherence percentage (%; Average AP) and daily compliance (%; Daily AP) was calculated. A patient was considered adherent when AP was 80–100%. Insulin adherence was measured by counting. Results: One hundred and ten patients completed the study (79 in the IG and 31 in the CG). 37. Mastitis, somatic cell count, and its impact on dairy-product quality… An omission in Colombia?: a review

Abstract

Mastitis is the most common disease in dairy herds and the main cause of economic losses in milk production worldwide. This inflammatory reaction of the mammary gland affects the quantity, composition and quality of milk produced and its suitability for the dairy industry. Despite of its importance, Colombia has no regulations on somatic cell count (SCC); that is, no official upper limits have been established for the dairy industry. The current quality-based payment system for raw milk does not encourage local producers to reduce the level of somatic cells. Consequently, Colombia is at a disadvantage compared to countries that include this parameter in their payment schemes and subscribe to international free trade agreements, affecting the competitiveness of the Colombian dairy sector. This article reviews the types of somatic cells, the microbiology of mastitis, its etiology and diagnosis, the changes that generate the composition of milk, and the impact of high SCCs on the quality of dairy products, such as yogurt, cheese, and milk powder. The final section offers a reflection on the problem of high SCCs in Colombia and the lack of regulations in this regard., A mastite é a doença mais frequente nos rebanhos leiteiros e é a principal causa de perdas econômicas na produção de leite em todo o mundo. Essa reação inflamatória da glândula mamária causa efeitos na quantidade, composição, qualidade e aptidão de leite processado pela indústria. No entanto, na Colômbia, não há regulamentação sobre a contagem de células somáticas até o momento, o principal indicador de mastite, ou seja, não há limites oficiais que sejam referência para a indústria leiteira. O sistema de pagamento baseado na qualidade não incentiva o produtor a diminuir o nível de células somáticas. Isso coloca o país em desvantagem em comparação com outros países que exigem esse parâmetro em seu esquema de pagamento e com quem a Colômbia possui acordos de livre comércio, afetando negativamente a competitividade do setor. Este documento analisa os tipos de células somáticas, a microbiologia da mastite, sua etiologia, diagnóstico, alterações na composição do leite e o impacto da alta contagem de células somáticas na qualidade do leite. Alguns derivados de leite, como iogurtes, queijos e leite em pó. Na parte final, é feita uma reflexão sobre o problema da alta contagem de células somáticas na Colômbia e a falta de regulamentação nesse sentido., La mastitis es la enfermedad más frecuente en los hatos lecheros y es la principal causa de pérdidas económicas en la producción de leche alrededor del mundo. Esta reacción inflamatoria de la glándula mamaria afecta la cantidad, composición, calidad y aptitud de la leche para procesamiento por la industria. Sin embargo, en Colombia no existe normatividad sobre el recuento de células somáticas, principal indicador de mastitis; es decir, no existen límites oficiales que sirvan de referencia para la industria lechera. El sistema de pago basado en calidad no incentiva al productor a disminuir el nivel de células somáticas. Esto coloca al país en desventaja frente a otros países que exigen este parámetro en su esquema de pago y con los cuales Colombia tiene tratados de libre comercio, afectando negativamente la competitividad del sector lechero colombiano. En este artículo se hace una revisión sobre los tipos de células somáticas, la microbiología de la mastitis, su etiología, el diagnóstico, los cambios que generan la composición de la leche y el impacto que tienen los altos recuentos de células somáticas sobre la calidad de algunos derivados lácteos como yogures, quesos y leche en polvo. En la parte final se presenta una reflexión sobre la problemática de los altos recuentos de células somáticas en Colombia y la falta de normatividad al respecto.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To know the distribution of births of very low birth weight infants by day of the week, and whether this distribution affects the morbidity and mortality in this group of patients. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of data collected prospectively in the Spanish SEN1500 network (2002-2011). Outborn infants, patients with major congenital anomalies, and those who died in the delivery room were excluded. Births were grouped into "weekdays" and "weekends." A multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the independent effect of the birth moment on outcomes, and Cox regression for survival. RESULTS: Out of a total of 27,205 very low birth weight infants born at and/or admitted to the participating centers, 22,961 (84.4%) met inclusion criteria. A reduction of 24% in the number of births was observed during the "weekends" compared with "weekdays".
