Search

Preparing quantum many-body states on classical or quantum devices is a very challenging task that requires accounting for exponentially large Hilbert spaces. Although this complexity can be managed with exponential ans\"atze (such as in the coupled-cluster method), these approaches are often tailored to specific systems, which limits their universality. Recent work has shown that the contracted Schr\"odinger equation enables the construction of universal, formally exact exponential ans\"atze for quantum many-body physics. However, while the ansatz is capable of resolving arbitrary quantum systems, it still requires a full calculation of its parameters whenever the underlying Hamiltonian changes, even slightly. Here, inspired by recent progress in operator learning, we develop a surrogate neural network solver that generates the exponential ansatz parameters using the Hamiltonian parameters as inputs, eliminating the need for repetitive computations. We illustrate the effectiveness of this approach by training neural networks of several quantum many-body systems, including the Fermi-Hubbard model., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Describing the dynamics of strong-laser driven open quantum systems is a very challenging task that requires the solution of highly involved equations of motion. While machine learning techniques are being applied with some success to simulate the time evolution of individual quantum states, their use to approximate time-dependent operators (that can evolve various states) remains largely unexplored. In this work, we develop driven neural quantum propagators (NQP), a universal neural network framework that solves driven-dissipative quantum dynamics by approximating propagators rather than wavefunctions or density matrices. NQP can handle arbitrary initial quantum states, adapt to various external fields, and simulate long-time dynamics, even when trained on far shorter time windows. Furthermore, by appropriately configuring the external fields, our trained NQP can be transferred to systems governed by different Hamiltonians. We present an exact ansatz for the eigenstate problem of mixed fermion-boson systems that can be implemented on quantum devices. Based on a generalization of the electronic contracted Schr\"odinger equation (CSE), our approach guides a trial wave function to the ground state of any arbitrary mixed Hamiltonian by directly measuring residuals of the mixed CSE on a quantum device. Unlike density-functional and coupled-cluster theories applied to electron-phonon or electron-photon systems, the accuracy of our approach is not limited by the unknown exchange-correlation functional or the uncontrolled form of the exponential ansatz. To test the performance of the method, we study the Tavis-Cummings model, commonly used in polaritonic quantum chemistry. Our results demonstrate that the CSE is a powerful tool in the development of quantum algorithms for solving general fermion-boson many-body problems.

The accurate (or even approximate) solution of the equations that govern the dynamics of dissipative quantum systems remains a challenging task for quantum science. While several algorithms have been designed to solve those equations with different degrees of flexibility, they rely mainly on highly expensive iterative schemes. Most recently, deep neural networks have been used for quantum dynamics but current architectures are highly dependent on the physics of the particular system and usually limited to population dynamics. Here we introduce an artificial-intelligence-based surrogate model that solves dissipative quantum dynamics by parameterizing quantum propagators as Fourier neural operators, which we train using both dataset and physics-informed loss functions. Compared with conventional algorithms, our quantum neural propagator avoids time-consuming iterations and provides a universal super-operator that can be used to evolve any initial quantum state for arbitrarily long times. To illustrate the wide applicability of the approach, we employ our quantum neural propagator to compute population dynamics and time-correlation functions of the Fenna-Matthews-Olson complex., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

Quantum Fisher information (QFI) is a central concept in quantum sciences used to quantify the ultimate precision limit of parameter estimation, detect quantum phase transitions, witness genuine multipartite entanglement, or probe nonlocality. Despite this widespread range of applications, computing the QFI value of quantum many-body systems is, in general, a very demanding task. Here we combine ideas from functional theories and quantum information to develop a novel functional framework for the QFI of fermionic and bosonic ground states. By relying upon the constrained-search approach, we demonstrate that the QFI matricial values can universally be determined by the one-body reduced density matrix (1-RDM), avoiding thus the use of exponentially large wave functions. Furthermore, we show that QFI functionals can be determined from the universal 1-RDM functional by calculating its derivatives with respect to the coupling strengths, becoming thus the generating functional of the QFI. We showcase our approach with the Bose-Hubbard model and present exact analytical and numerical QFI functionals. Computing excited-state properties of molecules and solids is considered one of the most important near-term applications of quantum computers. While many of the current excited-state quantum algorithms differ in circuit architecture, specific exploitation of quantum advantage, or result quality, one common feature is their rooting in the Schr\"odinger equation. However, through contracting (or projecting) the eigenvalue equation, more efficient strategies can be designed for near-term quantum devices. Here we demonstrate that when combined with the Rayleigh-Ritz variational principle for mixed quantum states, the ground-state contracted quantum eigensolver (CQE) can be generalized to compute any number of quantum eigenstates simultaneously. We introduce two excited-state (anti-Hermitian) CQEs that perform the excited-state calculation while inheriting many of the remarkable features of the original ground-state version of the algorithm, such as its scalability. To showcase our approach, we study several model and chemical Hamiltonians and investigate the performance of different implementations.

The weighted subspace-search variational quantum eigensolver (SSVQE) is a prominent algorithm for calculating excited-state properties of molecular quantum systems. In this work, we elaborate on some of its fundamental features with the aim of improving its practical realization. First, we demonstrate that the initial ans\"atze for various excited states could be prepared into a single pure state through a minimal number of ancilla qubits, followed by the optimization of a subsequent global unitary rotation in the targeted subspace. Since the ancillas' sole purpose is to purify an underlying ensemble $\rho_{\boldsymbol{w}}$ state with spectral weights $\boldsymbol{w}$, their measurement would just collapse $\rho_{\boldsymbol{w}}$ with probabilities $w_j$ to one of its eigenstates $|\Psi_j \rangle$. We thus observe that our realization of SSVQE is equivalent to the original SSVQE improved by importance sampling. Then, we elaborate by numerical means on the potential influence of the auxiliary weights $\boldsymbol{w}$ on the accuracy of the sought-after eigenstates and eigenenergies. Clear trends are discovered which are contrasted with some recent mathematical results concerning the ensemble variational principle that underlies SSVQE., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures. Wigner functions are broadly used to probe non-classical effects in the macroscopic world. Here we develop an orbital-free functional framework to compute the 1-body Wigner quasi-probability for both fermionic and bosonic systems. Since the key variable is a quasi-density, this theory is particularly well suited to circumvent the problem of finding the Pauli potential or approximating the kinetic energy in orbital-free density functional theory. As proof of principle, we find that the universal functional for the building block of optical lattices results from a translation, a contraction, and a rotation of the corresponding functional of the 1-body reduced density matrix, indicating a strong connection between these functional theories. Furthermore, we relate the concepts of Wigner negativity and $v$-representability, and find a manifold of ground states with negative Wigner functions., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

The ground states of the homogeneous electron gas and the homogeneous electron liquid are cornerstones in quantum physics and chemistry. They are archetypal systems in the regime of slowly varying densities in which the exchange-correlation energy can be estimated with a myriad of methods. For high densities, the behavior of the energy is well-known for 1, 2, and 3 dimensions. Here, we extend this model to arbitrary integer dimensions, and compute its correlation energy beyond the random phase approximation (RPA), using the celebrated approach developed by Singwi, Tosi, Land, and Sj\"olander (STLS), which is known to be remarkably accurate in the description of the full electronic density response for $2D$ and $3D$, both in the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic ground states. For higher dimensions, we compare the results obtained for the correlation energy using the STLS method with the values previously obtained using RPA. We found that at high dimensions STLS tends to be more physical in the sense that the infamous sum rules are better satisfied by the theory. State-average calculations based on mixture of states are increasingly being exploited across chemistry and physics as versatile procedures for addressing excitations of quantum many-body systems. If not too many states should need to be addressed, calculations performed on individual states is also a common option. Here we show how the two approaches can be merged into one method, dealing with a generalized yet single pure state. Machine learning is a powerful tool to design accurate, highly non-local, exchange-correlation functionals for density functional theory. So far, most of those machine learned functionals are trained for systems with an integer number of particles. As such, they are unable to reproduce some crucial and fundamental aspects, such as the explicit dependency of the functionals on the particle number or the infamous derivative discontinuity at integer particle numbers. Here we propose a solution to these problems by training a neural network as the universal functional of density-functional theory that (i) depends explicitly on the number of particles with a piece-wise linearity between the integer numbers and (ii) reproduces the derivative discontinuity of the exchange-correlation energy. This is achieved by using an ensemble formalism, a training set containing fractional densities, and an explicitly discontinuous formulation.

The one-body reduced density matrix $\gamma$ plays a fundamental role in describing and predicting quantum features of bosonic systems, such as Bose-Einstein condensation. The recently proposed reduced density matrix functional theory for bosonic ground states establishes the existence of a universal functional $\mathcal{F}[\gamma]$ that recovers quantum correlations exactly. Based on a novel decomposition of $\gamma$, we have developed a method to design reliable approximations for such universal functionals: our results suggest that for translational invariant systems the constrained search approach of functional theories can be transformed into an unconstrained problem through a parametrization of an Euclidian space. This simplification of the search approach allows us to use standard machine-learning methods to perform a quite efficient computation of both $\mathcal{F}[\gamma]$ and its functional derivative. In this paper we describe the $\epsilon$-isothermic surfaces in the pseudo-Euclidean 3-space and we obtain the pseudo-Calapso equation. In sequence, we classify the Dupin surfaces in pseudo-Euclidean 3-space having distinct principal curvatures and provide explicit coordinates for such surfaces. As application of the theory, we give explicit solutions to the pseudo-Calapso equation.

The homogeneous electron gas is one of the most studied model systems in condensed matter physics. It is also at the basis of the large majority of approximations to the functionals of density functional theory. As such, its exchange-correlation energy has been extensively studied, and is well-known for systems of 1, 2, and 3 dimensions. Here, we extend this model and compute the exchange and correlation energy, as a function of the Wigner-Seitz radius $r_s$, for arbitrary dimension $D$. We find a very different behavior for reduced dimensional spaces ($D=1$ and 2), our three dimensional space, and for higher dimensions. In fact, for $D > 3$, the leading term of the correlation energy does not depend on the logarithm of $r_s$ (as for $D=3$), but instead scales polynomialy: $ -c_D /r_s^{\gamma_D}$, with the exponent $\gamma_D=(D-3)/(D-1)$. In the large-$D$ limit, the value of $c_D$ is found to depend linearly with the dimension. Based on a generalization of Hohenberg-Kohn's theorem, we propose a ground state theory for bosonic quantum systems. Since it involves the one-particle reduced density matrix $\gamma$ as a natural variable but still recovers quantum correlations in an exact way it is particularly well-suited for the accurate description of Bose-Einstein condensates. As a proof of principle we study the building block of optical lattices. The solution of the underlying $v$-representability problem is found and its peculiar form identifies the constrained search formalism as the ideal starting point for constructing accurate functional approximations: The exact functionals for this $N$-boson Hubbard dimer and general Bogoliubov-approximated systems are determined. The respective gradient forces are found to diverge in the regime of Bose-Einstein condensation, $\nabla_{\gamma} \mathcal{F} \propto 1/\sqrt{1-N_{\mathrm{BEC}}/N}$, providing a natural explanation for the absence of complete BEC in nature.

The concept of active spaces simplifies the description of interacting quantum many-body systems by restricting to a neighbourhood of active orbitals around the Fermi level. The respective wavefunction ansatzes which involve all possible electron configurations of active orbitals can be characterized by the saturation of a certain number of Pauli constraints $0 \leq n_i \leq 1$, identifying the occupied core orbitals ($n_i=1$) and the inactive virtual orbitals ($n_j=0$). In Part I, we generalize this crucial concept of active spaces by referring to the generalized Pauli constraints. To be more specific, we explain and illustrate that the saturation of any such constraint on fermionic occupation numbers characterizes a distinctive set of active electron configurations. A converse form of this selection rule establishes the basis for corresponding multiconfigurational wavefunction ansatzes. In Part II, we provide rigorous derivations of those findings. Moroever, we extend our results to non-fermionic multipartite quantum systems, revealing that extremal single-body information has always strong implications for the multipartite quantum state. In that sense, our work also confirms that pinned quantum systems define new physical entities and the presence of pinnings reflect the existence of (possibly hidden) ground state symmetries.

We train a neural network as the universal exchange-correlation functional of density-functional theory that simultaneously reproduces both the exact exchange-correlation energy and potential. This functional is extremely non-local, but retains the computational scaling of traditional local or semi-local approximations. It therefore holds the promise of solving some of the delocalization problems that plague density-functional theory, while maintaining the computational efficiency that characterizes the Kohn-Sham equations. Furthermore, by using automatic differentiation, a capability present in modern machine-learning frameworks, we impose the exact mathematical relation between the exchange-correlation energy and the potential, leading to a fully consistent method. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach by looking at one-dimensional systems with two strongly-correlated electrons, where density-functional methods are known to fail, and investigate the behavior and performance of our functional by varying the degree of non-locality., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures; accepted for publication in J. We present an \textit{ab initio} theory for superconductors, based on a unique mapping between the statistical density operator at equilibrium, on the one hand, and the corresponding one-body reduced density matrix $\gamma$ and the anomalous density $\chi$, on the other. This new formalism for superconductivity yields the existence of a universal functional $\mathfrak{F}_\beta[\gamma,\chi]$ for the superconductor ground state, whose unique properties we derive. We then prove the existence of a Kohn-Sham system at finite temperature and derive the corresponding Bogoliubov-de Gennes-like single particle equations. By adapting the decoupling approximation from density functional theory for superconductors we bring these equations into a computationally feasible form. Finally, we use the existence of the Kohn-Sham system to extend the Sham-Schl\"uter connection and derive a first exchange-correlation functional for our theory. This reduced density matrix functional theory for superconductors has the potential of overcoming some of the shortcomings and fundamental limitations of density functional theory of superconductivity., Comment: 18 pages

We derive an equation for the time evolution of the natural occupation numbers for fermionic systems with more than two electrons. The evolution of such numbers is connected with the symmetry-adapted generalized Pauli exclusion principle, as well as with the evolution of the natural orbitals and a set of many-body relative phases. Based on recent progress on fermionic exchange symmetry we propose a way to develop new functionals for reduced density matrix functional theory. For some settings with an odd number of electrons, by assuming saturation of the inequalities stemming from the generalized Pauli principle, the many-body wave-function can be written explicitly in terms of the natural occupation numbers and natural orbitals. This leads to an expression for the two-particle density matrix and therefore for the correlation energy functional. This functional was then tested for a three-electron Hubbard model where it showed excellent performance both in the weak and strong correlation regimes., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Aiming at a unified treatment of correlation and inhomogeneity effects in superconductors, Oliveira, Gross and Kohn proposed in 1988 a density functional theory for the superconducting state. This theory relies on the existence of a Kohn-Sham scheme, i.e., an auxiliary noninteracting system with the same electron and anomalous densities of the original superconducting system. However, the question of noninteracting $v$-representability has never been properly addressed and the existence of the Kohn-Sham system has always been assumed without proof. Here, we show that indeed such a noninteracting system does not exist in at zero temperature. In spite of this result, we also show that the theory is still able to yield good results, although in the limit of weakly correlated systems only., Comment: 9 pages

Fermionic natural occupation numbers do not only obey Pauli's exclusion principle but are even stronger restricted by so-called generalized Pauli constraints. Whenever given natural occupation numbers lie on the boundary of the allowed region the corresponding $N$-fermion quantum state has a significantly simpler structure. We recall the recently proposed natural extension of the Hartree-Fock ansatz based on this structural simplification. This variational ansatz is tested for the lithium atom. Some of the most spectacular failures of density-functional and Hartree-Fock theories are related to an incorrect description of the so-called static electron correlation. Motivated by recent progress on the N-representability problem of the one-body density matrix for pure states, we propose a way to quantify the static contribution to the electronic correlation. By studying several molecular systems we show that our proposal correlates well with our intuition of static and dynamic electron correlation. The possible compatibility of density matrices for single-party subsystems is described by linear constraints on their respective spectra. Whenever some of those quantum marginal constraints are saturated, the total quantum state has a specific, simplified structure. We prove that these remarkable global implications of extremal local information are stable, i.e. they hold approximately for spectra close to the boundary of the allowed region. Application of this general result to fermionic quantum systems allows us to characterize natural extensions of the Hartree-Fock ansatz and to quantify their accuracy by resorting to one-particle information, only: The fraction of the correlation energy not recovered by such an ansatz can be estimated from above by a simple geometric quantity in the occupation number picture.

The concept of correlation is central to all approaches that attempt the description of many-body effects in electronic systems. Multipartite correlation is a quantum information theoretical property that is attributed to quantum states independent of the underlying physics. In quantum chemistry, however, the correlation energy (the energy not seized by the Hartree-Fock ansatz) plays a more prominent role. We show that these two different viewpoints on electron correlation are closely related. The key ingredient turns out to be the energy gap within the symmetry-adapted subspace. We then use a few-site Hubbard model and the stretched H$_2$ to illustrate this connection and to show how the corresponding measures of correlation compare., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures
