Abstract

Two important race groups of the stem nematode, Ditylenchus dipsaci, an obligatory polyphagous endoparasite, attack the bean, Vicia faba. Morphological differences have been found in the two groups and there were corresponding differences in faba bean disease symptoms. Agreement has been found between RAPD and phenotypic characteristics in the nematodes. Variation between D. dipsaci species in populations involved with V. faba was low. No strong correlation was found between geographical origin and morphological or molecular characteristics.

Abstract

National audience; New strains of Italian Ryegrass, grown either as main crops or as catch crops, have been bred with an improved resistance to the development of Heterodera avenae. At first, methods were developed to adapt miniature techniques (volume of the culture container, dosage of the inoculum, pathotype) to test the resistance in forage grasses. Subsequently, a great number of lines and cultivars of Perennial and Italian Ryegrass were tested, which showed a relatively low hosting capacity, compared to the susceptible wheat control, cv. Arminda. Using plants with complete resistance to Heterodera avenae, through successive crosses during four annual cycles of selection, we obtained lines of Italian Ryegrass, with a markedly improved resistance, characterized by a reduced mean number of cysts per plant and an increased proportion of plants devoid of cysts. It would be advisable to introduce such strains of Italian Ryegrass in areas where Heterodera avenae has a high intrinsic capacity to reproduce and when the crop season corresponds to the hatching period of the nematode (winter in Southern France). They can be used both as forage crops and as catch crops (to alleviate nitrate excesses) and will contribute to the control of the pathogen' s population density, thus protecting subsequent cereal crops, such as bread wheat and durum wheat.; H. avenae cause en France des dégâts aux différentes céréales à paille ainsi qu'au maïs. La culture pendant 2 années successives d'un couvert qui réduise la multiplication des nématodes au nématode permet d'assainir le sol. D'où l'intérêt de sélectionner des ray-grass résistants, qui seraient utilisés en culture intermédiaire ou principale. Le travail a tout d'abord consisté à adapter une technique miniaturisée (volume du contenant de culture, dose d'inoculum, pathotype) pour tester la résistance chez des graminées fourragères. On a ensuite testé des ray-grass anglais et d'Italie qui se sont révélés des hôtes médiocres par rapport à un blé tendre témoin, cv. Arminda. Par croisements successifs entre plantes à résistance complète, au cours de quatre cycles annuels de sélection, on a fortement augmenté le niveau de résistance du ray-grass d'Italie qui se traduit par une réduction du nombre moyen de kystes par plante, et par un pourcentage accru de plantes sans nématodes.

Abstract

Importance of cereals and wheat nematodes in the world is revised. Distribution of cereal nematodes, species and pathotypes includes root lesion, cereal cyst nematodes and other cereal parasitic species. Life cycle, symptoms of damage and yield losses are also revised for root knot, stem and seed gall nematodes. Integrated control of cereal nematodes and some chemical, biological and cultural practices, including grass free rotations and fallowing with cultivation, are discussed. Abstract

Eight populations of Heterodera avenae, H. filipjevi and H. latipons were tested in Petri dishes with six cereal differentials of the International Test Assortment and a set of resistant genotypes of wheats. Ratios of white females/juveniles inoculated were equivalent to those obtained previously in tubes and pots and confirmed the validity of the miniaturised technique used to study the virulence/resistance relationships of these nematodes and cereals. The populations were differentiated by virulence to barley differentials and a new group of pathotypes of H. avenae originating from Algeria was established. Differentiation among H. avenae populations from North Africa and West Asia was clearly demonstrated by their (a)virulence to the gene Cre1 in Triticum aestivum cv. Loros. As previously observed, cultivated and wild oats were poor hosts for Mediterranean populations of H. avenae, but contrasting host responses were observed for a physiological winter type of oat. In addition to describing the virulence status of H. filipjevi and H. latipons populations to barley, oat and wheat differentials, these results provide information for the introduction of resistance to barley and wheat breeding programmes. Abstract

Two sets of experiments in 1998 and 1999 studied the (a)virulence status of 14 populations of Heterodera avenae, and two populations each of H. filipjevi and H. latipons towards the resistance genes and genotypes of Triticeae, presently known to be resistant to H. avenae, the main species of the cereal cyst nematode (CCN) species complex. Susceptible controls were Triticum aestivum cv. Arminda and Triticum turgidum cv. Cham1. Even in controlled experimental conditions, host responses differed between replicates in the same test and between consecutive tests for unexplained reasons. In spite of that, it has been confirmed that several of these CCN populations differ in their intrinsic capacity to reproduce, and this has to be taken into account in resistance screening. Consequently, the (a)virulence status of a CCN population is better established by a qualitative demarcation between resistant and susceptible plant genotypes based on an average of one cyst limit per plant. The matrix inferred from such a classification of host responses of pooled 1998 and 1999 data showed a complex distribution of avirulent and virulent phenotypes in these CCN populations which seems to arise from a mosaic-like evolution. The more or less wide virulence spectrum shown by this complex of populations and species is discussed in relation to their phylogenetic relationships. Correspondence factor analysis of the pooled data demonstrated a geographical demarcation between several populations of H. avenae and the representatives of H. filipjevi and H. latipons for their (a)virulence to either Cre1 or Cre3 genes and T. aestivum AUS4930 genotype. This could reveal local or regional selection of new pathotypes, more particularly in H. avenae. Genetic introgression to improve resistance to these nematodes in both bread and durum wheats is discussed for regional and global applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
