Kibble balances are energy-conversion devices currently employed to realize the metrological redefinition of the kilogram unit of mass. The authors, noticing that the literature lacks a fundamental mathematical description of the Kibble balance working principle, propose a differential geometric approach to study general non-linear electromagneto-mechanical systems. Based on the application of Finsler geometry, the mathematical apparatus introduced in the paper is used to analyze the limits of modern Kibble balances, with particular attention to the magnetic design. Proximity operations to small bodies, such as asteroids and comets, demand high levels of autonomy to achieve cost-effective, safe, and reliable Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) solutions. Enabling autonomous GNC capabilities in the vicinity of these targets is thus vital for future space applications. However, the highly non-linear and uncertain environment characterizing their vicinity poses unique challenges that need to be assessed to grant robustness against unknown shapes and gravity fields. In this paper, a pipeline designed to generate variable density gravity field models is proposed, allowing the generation of a coherent set of scenarios that can be used for design, validation, and testing of GNC algorithms. The proposed approach consists in processing a polyhedral shape model of the body with a given density distribution to compute the coefficients of the spherical harmonics expansion associated with the gravity field. To validate the approach, several comparison are conducted against analytical solutions, literature results, and higher fidelity models, across a diverse set of targets with varying morphological and physical properties. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology, showing good performances in terms of modeling accuracy and computational efficiency. This research presents a faster and more robust framework for generating environmental models to be used in simulation and hardware-in-the-loop testing of onboard GNC algorithms.

Space-time modulation of electromagnetic parameters offers novel exciting possibilities for advanced field manipulations. In this study, we explore wave scattering from a time-varying interface characterized by a Lorentz-type dispersion with a step-like temporal variation in its parameters. Our findings reveal a new process: an unconventional frequency generation at the natural resonances of the system. Remarkably, this phenomenon enables the coupling of propagating waves to evanescent ones, allowing the direct far-field excitation of surface-wave modes without the mediation of spatial gratings or prisms. These results suggest a novel strategy for designing compact and ultra-fast photonic devices, eliminating the necessity for subwavelength spatial structuring or prolonged temporal modulations., Comment: 7 pages; 4 figures

The recent growing interest in small solar system bodies such as asteroids and comets for scientific inspection, exploitation of resources, and planetary defense reasons is pushing the development of innovative engineering solutions to better investigate these celestial bodies. Current approaches for autonomous proximity operations often relies on tracking a reference trajectory previously designed and optimized on-ground. An innovative concept developed in recent years is proposing a paradigm shift towards autonomous goal-oriented strategies, providing the probe with high-level tasks and enabling replanning capability on-board. A gradient base reachability exploration scheme is introduced in this work to efficiently compute high reward paths with limited computational resource. The methodology is tested in a case study involving proximity operations to asteroid (433) Eros, comparing the proposed approach with other exploration techniques and showing promising results.

Close-proximity exploration of small celestial bodies is crucial for the comprehensive and accurate characterization of their properties. However, the complex and uncertain dynamical environment around them contributes to a rapid dispersion of uncertainty and the emergence of non-Gaussian distributions. Therefore, to ensure safe operations, a precise understanding of uncertainty propagation becomes imperative. In this work, the dynamical environment is analyzed around two asteroids, Apophis, which will perform a close flyby to Earth in 2029, and Eros, which has been already explored by past missions. The performance of different uncertainty propagation methods (Linear Covariance Propagation, Unscented Transformation, and Polynomial Chaos Expansion) are compared in various scenarios of close-proximity operations around the two asteroids. Findings are discussed in terms of propagation accuracy and computational efficiency depending on the dynamical environment. By exploring these methodologies, this work contributes to the broader goal of ensuring the safety and effectiveness of spacecraft operations during close-proximity exploration of small celestial bodies.

We study the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) of the two-dimensional heterostructure CrI3/In2Se3/CrI3 by using density functional theory calculations and symmetry analysis. The spontaneous polarization in the In2Se3 ferroelectric layer and the antiferromagnetic ordering in CrI3 layers break the mirror symmetry and the timereversal symmetry, thus activating MOKE. We show that the Kerr angle can be switched by either the polarization or the antiferromagnetic order parameter. Our results suggest that ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic 2D heterostructures could be exploited for ultra-compact information storage devices, where the information is encoded by the two ferroelectric or the two time-reversed antiferromagnetic states, and the read-out performed optically by MOKE.

Temporal metamaterials, based on time-varying constitutive properties, offer new exciting possibilities for advanced field manipulations. In this study, we explore the capabilities of anisotropic temporal slabs, which rely on abrupt changes in time from isotropic to anisotropic response (and vice versa). Our findings show that these platforms can effectively manipulate the wave-spin dimension, allowing for a range of intriguing spin-controlled photonic operations. We demonstrate these capabilities through examples of spin-dependent analog computing and spin-orbit interaction effects for vortex generation. These results provide new insights into the field of temporal metamaterials, and suggest potential applications in communications, optical processing and quantum technologies., Comment: 27 pages; 8 figures

Recently, it has been shown that temporal metamaterials based on impulsive modulations of the constitutive parameters (of duration much smaller than a characteristic electromagnetic timescale) may exhibit a nonlocal response that can be harnessed so as to perform elementary analog computing on an impinging wavepacket. These short-pulsed metamaterials can be viewed as the temporal analog of conventional (spatial) metasurfaces. Here, inspired by the analogy with cascaded metasurfaces, we leverage this concept and take it one step further, by showing that short-pulsed metamaterials can be utilized as elementary bricks for more complex computations. To this aim, we develop a simple, approximate approach to systematically model the multiple actions of time-resolved short-pulsed metamaterials. Via a number of representative examples, we illustrate the computational capabilities enabled by this approach, in terms of simple and composed operations, and validate it against a rigorous numerical solution. Our results indicate that the temporal dimension may provide new degrees of freedom and design approaches in the emerging field of computational metamaterials, in addition or as an alternative to conventional spatially variant platforms., Comment: 13 pages; 4 figures

We discuss the ultraviolet sector of 3+1 dimensional Lifshitz-type anisotropic higher derivative scalar, fermion and gauge field theories, with anisotropy exponent z=3 and with explicit breaking of Lorentz symmetry. By discarding from the action all momentum dependent vertex operators, which is essential to avoid phenomenologically unacceptable deformations of the light cone, we find that renormalizable scalar self-interaction and Yukawa-like couplings are, in general, asymptotically free. However, the requirement of cancelling momentum dependent vertex operators is incompatible with gauge symmetry and, therefore, for this kind of theories, gauge symmetry as well as Lorentz symmetry are recovered only as emergent properties below some energy scale M, that must be constrained from experiments. We study a class of temporal metamaterials characterized by time-varying dielectric permittivity waveforms of duration much smaller than the characteristic wave-dynamical timescale. In the analogy between spatial and temporal metamaterials, such a short-pulsed regime can be viewed as the temporal counterpart of metasurfaces. We introduce a general and compact analytical formalism for modeling the interaction of a short-pulsed metamaterial with an electromagnetic wavepacket. Specifically, we elucidate the role of local and nonlocal effects, as well as of the time-reversal symmetry breaking, and we show how they can be harnessed to perform elementary analog computing, such as first and second derivatives. Our theory, validated against full-wave numerical simulations, suggests a novel route for manipulating electromagnetic waves without relying on long, periodic temporal modulations. Just as metasurfaces have played a pivotal role in the technological viability and practical applicability of conventional (spatial) metamaterials, short-pulsed metamaterials may catalyze the development of temporal and space-time metamaterials., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Nonlocality is a fundamental concept in photonics. For instance, nonlocal wave-matter interactions in spatially modulated metamaterials enable novel effects, such as giant electromagnetic chirality, artificial magnetism, and negative refraction. Here, we investigate the effects induced by spatial nonlocality in {\em temporal} metamaterials, i.e., media with a dielectric permittivity rapidly modulated in time. Via a rigorous multiscale approach, we introduce a general and compact formalism for the nonlocal effective medium theory of temporally periodic metamaterials. In particular, we study two scenarios: {\em i)} a periodic temporal modulation, and {{\em ii)}} a temporal boundary where the permittivity is abruptly changed in time and subject to periodic modulation. We show that these configurations can give rise to peculiar nonlocal effects, and we highlight the similarities and differences with respect to the spatial-metamaterial counterparts. Interestingly, by tailoring the effective boundary wave-matter interactions, we also identify an intriguing configuration for which a temporal metamaterial can perform the first-order derivative of an incident wavepacket. Our theoretical results, backed by full-wave numerical simulations, introduce key physical ingredients that may pave the way for novel applications. By fully exploiting the time-reversal symmetry breaking, nonlocal temporal metamaterials promise a great potential for efficient, tunable optical computing devices.
