Analysis using inverse probability weighting showed no significant difference in one-year mortality or major adverse cardiac events (MACE) for EES compared to ZES [Mortality Odds Ratio 0.94 (95% CI 0.81– 1.175); p = 0.780] [MACE Odds Ratio 1.04 (95% CI 0.92– 1.16; p = 0.551]). Analysis using propensity matching showed no significant difference in EES one-year mortality (547 of 992 alive and available after censoring) compared to ZES (546 of 992) [Log-Rank statistic 0.3348 (p = 0.563)].Conclusion: Automated cloud-based medical device safety surveillance using EHR data is feasible and was efficiently performed using DELTA. No statistically significant differences in 1-year safety outcomes between ZES and EES were identified using two statistical approaches, consistent with randomized trial findings.Plain Language Summary: What is already known on this topic–The National Evaluation System for health Technology (NEST) Coordinating Center has developed a prototype cloud-based medical device surveillance system designed to capture clinical data obtained during routine care along with automated analysis tools to monitor device safety and performance in a real-world setting. DELTA is a suite of open-source active surveillance software tools that has been successfully deployed in other data environments and was being evaluated in the NEST cloud.What this study adds–This paper reports on the validation of DELTA methods deployed in the NEST cloud environment (appendix) as well as the initial demonstration of active safety surveillance for two commonly used coronary stent devices. Electronic health record data on the two coronary stents from two health systems were ingested into the Cloud, linked to the Social Security Death Master File along with a reference device database, and analyzed with DELTA as a prototype of an active safety surveillance system.How this study might affect research, practice, or policy–Consistent with clinical trials and a prior independent analysis, no statistically significant differences in clinical outcomes were found between the two stents. Importantly, the results support the feasibility of using the NEST multi-health system cloud for monitoring medical device safety and effectiveness. Abstract

The Kuiper Belt is a distant region of the Solar System. On 1 January 2019, the New Horizons spacecraft flew close to (486958) 2014 MU69, a Cold Classical Kuiper Belt Object, a class of objects that have never been heated by the Sun and are therefore well preserved since their formation. Here we describe initial results from these encounter observations. MU69 is a bi-lobed contact binary with a flattened shape, discrete geological units, and noticeable albedo heterogeneity. However, there is little surface color and compositional heterogeneity. No evidence for satellites, ring or dust structures, gas coma, or solar wind interactions was detected. Abstract

The Cold Classical Kuiper Belt, a class of small bodies in undisturbed orbits beyond Neptune, are primitive objects preserving information about Solar System formation. The New Horizons spacecraft flew past one of these objects, the 36 km long contact binary (486958) Arrokoth (2014 MU69), in January 2019. Images from the flyby show that Arrokoth has no detectable rings, and no satellites (larger than 180 meters diameter) within a radius of 8000 km, and has a lightly-cratered smooth surface with complex geological features, unlike those on previously visited Solar System bodies. The density of impact craters indicates the surface dates from the formation of the Solar System. The two lobes of the contact binary have closely aligned poles and equators, constraining their accretion mechanism.

Abstract

The deep nitrogen-covered Sputnik Planitia (SP; informal name) basin on Pluto is located very close to the longitude of Pluto's tidal axis[1] and may be an impact feature [2], by analogy with other large basins in the solar system[3,4]. Reorientation[5-7] due to tidal and rotational torques can explain SP's location, but requires it to be a positive gravity anomaly[7], despite its negative topography. Here we argue that if SP formed via impact and if Pluto possesses a subsurface ocean, a positive gravity anomaly would naturally result because of shell thinning and ocean uplift, followed by later modest N2 deposition. Without a subsurface ocean a positive gravity anomaly requires an implausibly thick N2 layer (greater than 40 km). A rigid, conductive ice shell is required to prolong such an ocean's lifetime to the present day[8] and maintain ocean uplift. Because N2 deposition is latitude-dependent[9], nitrogen loading and reorientation may have exhibited complex feedbacks[7].

Abstract

The vast, deep, volatile-ice-filled basin informally named Sputnik Planum is central to Pluto's geological activity[1,2]. Composed of molecular nitrogen, methane, and carbon monoxide ices[3], but dominated by N2-ice, this ice layer is organized into cells or polygons, typically ~10-40 km across, that resemble the surface manifestation of solid state convection[1,2]. Here we report, based on available rheological measurements[4], that solid layers of N2 ice approximately greater than 1 km thick should convect for estimated present-day heat flow conditions on Pluto. More importantly, we show numerically that convective overturn in a several-km-thick layer of solid nitrogen can explain the great lateral width of the cells. The temperature dependence of N2-ice viscosity implies that the SP ice layer convects in the so-called sluggish lid regime[5], a unique convective mode heretofore not definitively observed in the Solar System. Average surface horizontal velocities of a few cm/yr imply surface transport or renewal times of ~500,000 years, well under the 10 Myr upper limit crater retention age for Sputnik Planum[2]. Similar convective surface renewal may also occur on other dwarf planets in the Kuiper belt, which may help explain the high albedos of some of them.

Abstract

A unique feature of Pluto's large satellite Charon is its dark red northern polar cap. Similar colours on Pluto's surface have been attributed to organic macromolecules produced by energetic radiation processing of hydrocarbons. The polar location of this material on Charon implicates the temperature extremes that result from Charon's high obliquity and long seasons. The escape of Pluto's atmosphere provides a potential feed stock for production of complex chemistry. Gas from Pluto that is transiently cold-trapped and processed at Charon's winter pole was proposed as an explanation on the basis of an image of Charon's northern hemisphere, but not modelled quantitatively. Here we report images of the southern hemisphere illuminated by Pluto-shine and also images taken during the approach phase showing the northern polar cap over a range of longitudes. We model the surface thermal environment on Charon, the supply and temporary cold-trapping of material escaping from Pluto, and, while cold-trapped, its photolytic processing into more complex and less volatile molecules. The model results are consistent with the proposed mechanism producing the observed colour pattern on Charon.

Abstract

The flyby of Pluto and Charon by the New Horizons spacecraft provided high-resolution images of cratered surfaces embedded in the Kuiper belt, an extensive region of bodies orbiting beyond Neptune. Impact craters on Pluto and Charon were formed by collisions with other Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) with diameters from ~40 kilometers to ~300 meters, smaller than most KBOs observed directly by telescopes. We find a relative paucity of small craters less than approximately 13 kilometers in diameter, which cannot be explained solely by geological resurfacing. This implies a deficit of small KBOs (less than 1 to 2 kilometers in diameter). Some surfaces on Pluto and Charon are likely greater than 4 billion years old, thus their crater records provide information on the size-frequency distribution of KBOs in the early Solar System.

Abstract

The New Horizons mission has provided resolved measurements of Pluto's moons Styx, Nix, Kerberos, and Hydra. All four are small, with equivalent spherical diameters of $\approx$40 km for Nix and Hydra and ~10 km for Styx and Kerberos. They are also highly elongated, with maximum to minimum axis ratios of $\approx$2. All four moons have high albedos ( $\approx$50-90 %) suggestive of a water-ice surface composition. Crater densities on Nix and Hydra imply surface ages $\gtrsim$ 4 Ga. The small moons rotate much faster than synchronous, with rotational poles clustered nearly orthogonal to the common pole directions of Pluto and Charon. Abstract

The Pluto system was recently explored by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, making closest approach on 14 July 2015. Pluto's surface displays diverse landforms, terrain ages, albedos, colors, and composition gradients. Evidence is found for a water-ice crust, geologically young surface units, surface ice convection, wind streaks, volatile transport, and glacial flow. Pluto's atmosphere is highly extended, with trace hydrocarbons, a global haze layer, and a surface pressure near 10 microbars. Pluto's diverse surface geology and long-term activity raise fundamental questions about how small planets remain active many billions of years after formation. Pluto's large moon Charon displays tectonics and evidence for a heterogeneous crustal composition, its north pole displays puzzling dark terrain. Abstract

An empirical model for forecasting solar wind speed related geomagnetic events is presented here. The model is based on the estimated location and size of solar coronal holes. This method differs from models that are based on photospheric magnetograms (e.g., Wang-Sheeley model) to estimate the open field line configuration. Rather than requiring the use of a full magnetic synoptic map, the method presented here can be used to forecast solar wind velocities and magnetic polarity from a single coronal hole image, along with a single magnetic full-disk image. The coronal hole parameters used in this study are estimated with Kitt Peak Vacuum Telescope He I 1083 nm spectrograms and photospheric magnetograms. Solar wind and coronal hole data for the period between May 1992 and September 2003 are investigated. The new model is found to be accurate to within 10% of observed solar wind measurements for its best one-month periods, and it has a linear correlation coefficient of ~0.38 for the full 11 years studied. Using a single estimated coronal hole map, the model can forecast the Earth directed solar wind velocity up to 8.5 days in advance. Abstract

An evaluation of the principal uncertainties in the computation of neutrino fluxes produced in cosmic ray showers in the atmosphere is presented. The neutrino flux predictions are needed for comparison with experiment to perform neutrino oscillation studies. The paper concentrates on the main limitations which are due to hadron production uncertainties. It also treats primary cosmic ray flux uncertainties, which are at a lower level. The absolute neutrino fluxes are found to have errors of around 15% in the neutrino energy region important for contained events underground. Large cancellations of these errors occur when ratios of fluxes are considered, in particular, the $\nu_\mu/\bar{\nu}_\mu$ ratio below $E_\nu=1$ GeV, the $(\nu_\mu+\bar{\nu}_\mu)/(\nu_e+\bar{\nu}_e)$ ratio below $E_\nu=10$ GeV and the up/down ratios above $E_\nu=1$ GeV are at the 1% level. Abstract

A Monte-Carlo calculation of the atmospheric neutrino fluxes [1,2] has been extended to take account of the three-dimensional (3D) nature of the problem, including the bending of secondary particles in the geomagnetic field. Emphasis has been placed on minimizing the approximations when introducing the 3D considerations. In this paper, we describe the techniques used and quantify the effects of the small approximations which remain. We compare 3D and 1D calculations using the same physics input in order to evaluate the conditions under which the 3D calculation is required and when the considerably simpler 1D calculation is adequate. We find that the 1D and 3D results are essentially identical for neutrino energy greater than 5 GeV except for small effects in the azimuthal distributions due to bending of the secondary muon by the geomagnetic field during their propagation in the atmosphere., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, LaTeX, to be submitted to Physical Review D

For closed chains, we show that there are unknotted but locked closed chains, and we provide an algorithm for convexifying a planar simple polygon in 3D. Abstract

Mosses play key ecological roles in water and nutrient retention in many ecosystems, yet relatively little is known of the functional characteristics of moss species, particularly nutritional characteristics. We investigated the net flux of ammonium, nitrate, and protons, using a microelectrode ion flux measurement system, in the gametophytes of 21 common species of moss from three contrasting locations in southern coastal British Columbia. The general location from which mosses were collected did not significantly affect ammonium or nitrate uptake. Proton efflux was greatest in mosses from locations with high rainfall. Rates of nitrate uptake differed among moss families, but there were no significant differences in uptake among species within families. Ammonium net flux differed among moss families, but also among species nested within family, with some species showing uptake and other showing ammonium efflux. In general, moss species native to dry habitats appeared to have higher rates of nitrogen uptake when ammonium and nitrate were available under favourable conditions. Les mousses jouent un role ecologique majeur dans la retention de l'eau et des nutriments dans plusieurs ecosystemes, mais on connait relativement peu de choses des caracteristiques fonctionnelles des especes de mousses, specialement les caracteristiques nutritionnelles. Les auteurs ont examine le flux net d'ammonium, de nitrate et de protons a l'aide d'un systeme de mesure du flux ionique par microelectrode, dans les gametophytes de 21 especes communes de mousses provenant de trois endroits contrastes dans le sud de la cote de la Colombie-Britannique. Le lieu general a partir duquel les mousses etaient recoltees n'affectait pas significativement la captation d'ammonium ou de nitrate. L'efflux de proton etait plus eleve chez les mousses recoltees de lieux ou les precipitations sont abondantes. Les taux de captation de nitrate variaient en fonction des familles de mousses, mais sans differences significatives de captation entre les especes d'une meme famille. L'influx net d'ammonium variait en fonction des familles de mousses, mais aussi en fonction des especes d'une meme famille, certaines especes captant l'ammonium alors que d'autres montraient un efflux. En general, les mousses indigenes d'habitats secs semblaient avoir des taux de captation d'azote plus eleves lorsque l'ammonium et le nitrate etaient disponibles en conditions defavorables. Abstract

Background: Median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS), also known as Dunbar syndrome or celiac artery (CA) compression syndrome, is a rare condition characterized by persistent post-meal or post-exercise abdominal discomfort, often more pronounced during expiration. Additional symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and weight loss. Aims and Objectives: To document the clinical presentation, diagnostic process, and treatment outcomes of seven patients diagnosed with MALS and to evaluate the effectiveness of surgical release of the median arcuate ligament (MAL) over a follow-up period of at least six months. Materials and Methods: The study included seven patients diagnosed with MALS from 2019 to 2021. Diagnosis was based on the presence of chronic abdominal pain and associated symptoms, absence of alternative diagnoses after various clinical assessments, and angiographic evidence of CA compression. The primary treatment involved surgical decompression of the CA by releasing the MAL through either open or laparoscopic techniques. Results: All seven patients underwent successful surgical release of the MAL. The patients were followed up for at least six months post-surgery. The study evaluated the persistence of symptoms and the need for additional interventions such as revascularization techniques. Conclusion: Surgical release of the MAL is the primary treatment for MALS, providing relief for many patients. However, long-term follow-up is essential as some patients may continue to experience symptoms post-surgery, necessitating further interventions.
