Bistability in the current–voltage characteristics of semiconductor superlattices and quantum cascade laser structures has the potential for wide-ranging applications, particularly in sensing systems. However, the interdependency of applied bias and current injection in conventional two-terminal structures has led to complications in analysis and rendered the bistability phenomenon difficult to implement in practical applications. Here, we report a new kind of electronic bistability coupled to optical switching in a resonant tunneling bipolar superlattice transistor. This bistability manifests as sharp discontinuities in the collector current with extremely small variations of the applied voltage, which arise from unstable tunneling transmission across the hetero-barrier between the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the edge of the transistor base and the collector superlattice structure. The electronic transitions between high and low quantum mechanical transmissions are demonstrated to be caused by self-consistent variations of the internal electric field at the heterointerface between the 2DEG and the superlattice. They are also present in the base current of the three-terminal device and result in sharp switching of near-infrared spontaneous light emission output from an interband radiative recombination process with a peak emission wavelength of 1.58 μ m. A comprehensive quantum mechanical theoretical model accounting for the self-consistent bistable tunneling transmission is in quantitative agreement with the experimental data. The oral toxicity of recombinant human lactoferrin (rhLF, Helaina rhLF, Effera™) produced in Komagataella phaffii was investigated in adult Sprague Dawley rats by once daily oral gavage for 14 consecutive days. The study used groups of 3–6 rats/sex/dose. The vehicle control group received sodium citrate buffer, and the test groups received daily doses of 200, 1000, and 2000 mg of rhLF in sodium citrate buffer per kg body weight. Bovine LF at 2000 mg/kg body weight per day was used as a comparative control. Clinical observations, body weight, hematology, clinical chemistry, iron parameters, immunophenotyping, and gross examination at necropsy were used as criteria for detecting the effects of treatment in all groups and to help select dose levels for future toxicology studies. Quantitative LF levels were also analyzed as an indication of bioavailability. Overall, administration of Helaina rhLF by once daily oral gavage for 14 days was well tolerated in rats at levels up to 2000 mg/kg/day, or 57 × Helaina's intended commercial use in adults, and indicating that a high dose of 2000 mg/kg/day is appropriate for future definitive toxicology studies. The subject presented with sudden sensorineural hearing loss and diplacusis a day after onset. Testing involved detailed interview, standard audiometry, detailed inter-octave audiometry, and measurement of detailed psychophysical frequency tuning curves during a two day recovery period.One male aged in his thirties with otherwise normal hearing.Although standard audiometry was within normal limits, detailed inter-octave audiometry and psychophysical frequency tuning curves were consistent with a punctate unilateral intra-cochlear lesion that resolved over a period of three days.This is the first report of such a frequency-specific audiometric shift and diplacusis after sildenafil, and is not consistent with previous reports of direct ototoxic pharmacological effects. We propose that the lesion was most likely caused by a cochlear bleed, and may have been due to physical exertion rather than a direct pharmaceutical effect. Correlating data from optical, structural, and theoretical methods allows the properties of highly faceted Cd2SnO4 (CTO) inverted spinel plasmonic semiconductor nanocrystals (PSNCs) to be fully evaluated. The use of Sn(II) in the colloidal reaction for CTO results in reproducible octahedral PSNCs with an aspect ratio of 1.30. Correlating extinction spectra with magnetic circular dichroism yields a carrier density (n = 5.19 × 1019 cm−3) and carrier effective mass (m* = 0.022me) respectively. 113Cd and 119Sn solid‐state NMR experiments show clear evidence of metallic‐like carriers in CTO NCs based upon the observation of Knight shifts. These data suggest that carrier formation in CTO arises from Sn antisite occupation of octahedral Cd sites (SnCd). Self-study researchers have periodically considered the essence of self-study, its objectives, its applications, and potential future trajectories. To address this imperative, our study undertakes a content analysis of the initial 19 volumes of Studying Teacher Education (STE), the flagship journal of self-study research. We focus specifically on the methodological dimensions of the scholarship featured in the journal, encompassing the spectrum of self-study methodologies employed, data collection techniques utilized, and measures of trustworthiness adopted. Through our analysis, we identify prevalent trends within each thematic domain, alongside an evolving consensus over time regarding the characteristics of high-quality self-study research. Nonetheless, we also discern persistent challenges concerning the lack of definitional precision and consistent implementation across diverse methodologies, data collection approaches, and trustworthiness measures. Echoing previous scholarship, we advocate for the establishment of a shared lexicon within the self-study community and the cultivation of explicit understandings regarding the diverse modalities of its application. Furthermore, drawing from our analysis, we introduce a typology delineating three distinct epochs of self-study research within the journal’s history while also envisioning the emergence of a fourth era poised to both reaffirm self-study’s foundational role as a form of counter-scholarship and chart innovative pathways forward. Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a fatal prion disease of cervids spreading across North America. More effective mitigation efforts may require expansion of the available toolkit to include new methods that provide earlier antemortem detection, higher throughput, and less expense than current immunohistochemistry (IHC) methods. The rectal mucosa near the rectoanal junction is a site of early accumulation of CWD prions and is safely sampled in living animals by pinch biopsy. A fluorescence-based, 96-well format, protein-aggregation assay—the real-time quaking-induced conversion (RT-QuIC) assay—is capable of ultra-sensitive detection of CWD prions. Notably, the recombinant protein substrate is crucial to the assay's performance and is now commercially available. In this blinded independent study, the preclinical diagnostic performance of a standardized RT-QuIC protocol using a commercially sourced substrate (MNPROtein) and a laboratory-produced substrate was studied using mock biopsy samples of the rectal mucosa from 284 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). The samples were from a frozen archive of intact rectoanal junctions collected at depopulations of farmed herds positive for CWD in the United States. All deer were pre-clinical at the time of depopulation and infection status was established from the regulatory record, which evaluated the medial retropharyngeal lymph nodes (MRPLNs) and obex by CWD-IHC. A pre-analytic sample precipitation step was found to enhance the protocol's detection limit. Performance metrics were influenced by the choice of RT-QuIC diagnostic cut points (minimum number of positive wells and assay time) and by deer attributes (preclinical infection stage and prion protein genotype). The peak overall diagnostic sensitivities of the protocol were similar for both substrates (MNPROtein, 76.8%; laboratory-produced, 73.2%), though each was achieved at different cut points. Preclinical infection stage and prion protein genotype at codon 96 (G = glycine, S = serine) were primary predictors of sensitivity. The diagnostic sensitivities in late preclinical infections (CWD-IHC positive MPRLNs and obex) were similar, ranging from 96% in GG96 deer to 80% in xS96 deer (x = G or S). In early preclinical infections (CWD-IHC positive MRPLNs only), the diagnostic sensitivity was 64–71% in GG96 deer but only 25% in xS96 deer. These results demonstrate that this standardized RT-QuIC protocol for rectal biopsy samples using a commercial source of substrate produced stratified diagnostic sensitivities similar to or greater than those reported for CWD-IHC but in less than 30 hours of assay time and in a 96-well format. Notably, the RT-QuIC protocol used herein represents a standardization of protocols from several previous studies. Alignment of the sensitivities across these studies suggests the diagnostic performance of the assay is robust given quality reagents, optimized diagnostic criteria, and experienced staff. For decades, researchers have employed sound to study the biology of wildlife, with the aim to better understand their ecology and behaviour. By utilizing on‐animal recorders to capture audio from freely moving animals, scientists can decipher the vocalizations and glean insights into their behaviour and ecosystem dynamics through advanced signal processing. However, the laborious task of sorting through extensive audio recordings has been a major bottleneck. To expedite this process, researchers have turned to machine learning techniques, specifically neural networks, to streamline the analysis of data. Nevertheless, much of the existing research has focused predominantly on stationary recording devices, overlooking the potential benefits of employing on‐animal recorders in conjunction with machine learning. To showcase the synergy of on‐animal recorders and machine learning, we conducted a study at the Kutuharju research station in Kaamanen, Finland, where the vocalizations of rutting reindeer were recorded during their mating season. By attaching recorders to seven male reindeer during the rutting periods of 2019 and 2020, we trained convolutional neural networks to distinguish reindeer grunts with a 95% accuracy rate. This high level of accuracy allowed us to examine the reindeers' grunting behaviour, revealing patterns indicating that older, heavier males vocalized more compared to their younger, lighter counterparts. The success of this study underscores the potential of on‐animal acoustic recorders coupled with machine learning techniques as powerful tools for wildlife research, hinting at their broader applications with further advancement and optimization. Environmental education (EE) is instrumental in developing environmentally literate citizens with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to support sustainable development. In the case of EE school field trips in the USA, these experiences also foster learning and skill development that supports meeting state and national educational standards. However, despite the importance of EE field trip programs, not all schools participate. This study explored the barriers to accessibility to EE field trips by conducting semi-structured interviews with EE providers and administrators of middle schools in the Congaree Biosphere Reserve (CBR), South Carolina, USA. We also used geospatial information systems to investigate accessibility spatially. Results suggest that aspatial barriers such as curricular constraints, capacity to plan and lead field trips, costs, and transportation influence participation. The results also suggest that these aspatial barriers are often interlinked and that access to EE field trips is disproportionately allocated to students in private education and urban settings and that rural, poor, minority, underperforming, and English as Second Language students face additional hurdles. This contribution discusses salient aspects of the development of ceramics technology from its invention to the present, and the role ceramics have played during the cultural development and technological progress of ancient and modern societies. The conjecture is being advanced that the transformation of ceramic production modes from holistic, that is, individualistic processes to prescriptive, that is, cooperative industrially determined technologies had a profound and lasting impact on the social, economic, and cultural fabric of all societies. In addition, the chaotic and thus, nondeterministic interaction of ceramic technology and society, and the transfer of information among potters will be described in terms of the concept of strange attractors as well as sets of self‐normalizing ‘memes’ (ideas) in a Lamarckian and/or Darwinian mode. Zooplankton are the key intermediary between primary production and the fish community and a cornerstone of marine food webs, but they are often poorly represented in models that tend to focus on fish, charismatic top predators, or ocean biogeochemistry. In this study, we use an intermediate complexity end‐to‐end food web model of the North Sea with explicit two‐way coupling of zooplankton to phytoplankton and higher trophic levels to ask whether this matters. We vary the metabolic rate of omnivorous zooplankton (OZ) as a proxy for uncertainties in our understanding and modeling of zooplankton form and function, and moving beyond previous studies we look at the impacts on the food web in concert with climate warming and fishing. We consider impacts on food web state and time to recover the relevant unfished state after fishing ceases. We also consider potential impacts on pelagic and demersal fishing fleets if we assume that they are constrained by the requirement to allow recovery to an unfished state within a certain period of time as a way of ensuring consistency with Good Environmental Status as required by EU and UK legislation. We find that all three aspects considered are highly sensitive to changes in the treatment of zooplankton, with impacts being larger than for warming of 2 or 4°C across most food web functional groups, particularly for apex predators. We call for a programme of research aimed at improving our understanding of zooplankton ecology and its relationship to the wider food web, and we recommend that improved representations of zooplankton are incorporated in future modeling studies as a priority. This contribution provides a topical view at and review of traditional clay‐based utilitarian cooking pots that were used for millennia to prepare, serve, display, and distribute foodstuff. Key mechanical and thermal properties of ceramic cooking vessels will be discussed and strategies of property optimization outlined. In addition, some important chemical changes food constituents undergo during cooking will be explained. Mass‐produced ancient ceramic cooking pots from Neolithic Mesopotamia have revolutionized the art of cooking by allowing foodstuff to be processed in water. As an example of successfully optimizing the properties of cooking vessels, emphasis is being given to Indigenous prehistoric North American ware of the Mississippian culture (c. 800 to 1600 CE) that show impressively how ancient potters overcame the technological challenges posed by essentially unsuitable smectite‐rich clays with extreme plasticity and high swell–shrink ratio by adding copious amounts of burnt mussel shells as temper material. Introduction The incidence and management outcomes of COVID-19 patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) on veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-V ECMO) requiring chest tubes are not well-described. This study sought to explore differences in tube thoracostomy rates and subsequent complications between patients with and without COVID-19 ARDS on V-V ECMO. Materials and Methods This study is a single institution, retrospective cohort study of patients with COVID-19 ARDS requiring V-V ECMO. The control cohort consisted of patients who required V-V ECMO for ARDS-related diagnoses from January 2018 to January 2021. The primary outcome was any complication following initial tube thoracostomy placement. Study approval was obtained from the Brooke Army Medical Center Institutional Review Board (C.2017.152d). Results Twenty-five COVID-19 patients and 38 controls were included. Demographic parameters did not differ between the groups. The incidence of pneumothorax was not significantly different between the two groups (44% COVID-19 vs. 22% control, OR 2.8, 95% CI 0.95–7.9, P  = 0.09). Patients with COVID-19 were as likely to receive tube thoracostomy as controls (36% vs. 24%, OR 1.8, 95% CI 0.55–5.7). Complications, however, were more likely to occur in the COVID-19 group (89% vs. 33%, OR 16, 95% CI, 1.6–201, P  = 0.0498). Conclusions Tube thoracostomy placement in COVID-19 patients with ARDS requiring V-V ECMO is common, as are complications following initial placement. Clinicians should anticipate the need for re-intervention in this patient population. Small-bore (14Fr and smaller) pigtail catheters appeared to be safe and efficacious in this setting, but further study on tube thoracostomy management in ECMO patients is needed. INTRODUCTION: Nursing home facilities in Rhode Island face unprecedented challenges today. Most facilities find themselves in a difficult financial position with thin – or negative – operating margins. In addition, Rhode Island enacted new minimum staffing regulations for nursing homes in 2021. Facilities that fail to meet the new staffing requirements would incur significant financial penalties. The persistent shortage of direct care staff, however, limits administrators’ ability to hire the workers needed to meet the required staffing levels. METHODS: We conducted an online survey of nursing home administrators at all of the licensed nursing facilities in Rhode Island over 30 days from September to October 2023. We received responses from 53 out of 77 nursing home administrators, for an overall response rate of 69%. RESULTS: A majority of respondents reported numerous vacancies for clinical staff at their facilities. Most administrators felt that it was difficult to hire new staff, despite a variety of financial incentives to recruit workers. As a result, nursing homes were unable to comply with Rhode Island’s new minimum staffing requirements. CONCLUSION: Nursing homes in Rhode Island continue to experience a chronic staffing shortage. Furthermore, since a majority of nursing homes in Rhode Island have a negative operating margin, enforcing the state’s minimum staffing requirements would impose significant financial hardship on the state’s nursing facilities. Early-onset breast cancer (EoBC), defined by a diagnosis <40 years of age, is associated with poor prognosis. This study investigated the mutational landscape of non-metastatic EoBC and the prognostic relevance of mutational signatures using 100 tumour samples from Alberta, Canada. The MutationalPatterns package in R/Bioconductor was used to extract de novo single-base substitution (SBS) and insertion–deletion (indel) mutational signatures and to fit COSMIC SBS and indel signatures. We assessed associations between these signatures and clinical characteristics of disease, in addition to recurrence-free (RFS) and overall survival (OS). Five SBS and two indel signatures were extracted. The SBS13-like signature had higher relative contributions in the HER2-enriched subtype. Patients with higher than median contribution tended to have better RFS after adjustment for other prognostic factors (HR = 0.29; 95% CI: 0.08–1.06). An unsupervised clustering algorithm based on absolute contribution revealed three clusters of fitted COSMIC SBS signatures, but cluster membership was not associated with clinical variables or survival outcomes. The results of this exploratory study reveal various SBS and indel signatures may be associated with clinical features of disease and prognosis. Future studies with larger samples are required to better understand the mechanistic underpinnings of disease progression and treatment response in EoBC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Approximately 25% of accidents in the United States are caused by texting while driving, prompting the creation of several media campaigns to reduce such risky behavior. The current research examined whether death-related advertisements increase cell phone use while driving. Studies 1-3 found that individuals engaged in greater distracted driving in the presence of a mortality-themed texting advertisement. Study 2 demonstrated that participants were more likely to text on their cell phone using a driving simulator, leading to more swerving and collisions after viewing a death-related (vs. neutral) poster. Finally, using eye-tracking, Study 3 showed that participants who viewed a death advertisement looked away from the road and texted more as compared to persons in the control condition. Background: Double lumen endobronchial tubes (DLTs) are frequently used to employ single lung ventilation strategies during thoracic surgical procedures. Placement of these tubes can be challenging even for experienced clinicians. We hypothesized that airway anatomy, particularly of the glottis and proximal trachea, significantly impacts the ease or difficulty in placement of these tubes. Methods: Images from 24 randomly selected Positron Emission Tomography – Computed Tomography (PET-CT) scans were evaluated for several anatomic aspects of the upper airway, including size and angulation of the glottis and proximal tracheal using calibrated CT measurements and an online digital protractor. The anatomic issues identified were confirmed in cadaveric anatomic models. Results: Proximal tracheal diameter measurements in PET-CT scans demonstrated a mean ± standard deviation of 20.4 ± 2.5 mm in 12 males and 15.5 ± 0.98 mm in 12 females (p < 0.001), and both were large enough to accommodate 39 French and 37 French DLTs in males and females, respectively. Subsequent measurements of the posterior angulation of the proximal trachea revealed a mean angle of 40.8 ± 5.7 degrees with no sex differences. By combining the 24 individual posterior tracheal angles with the 16 angled distal tip measurements DLTs (mean angle 24.9 ± 2.1 degrees), we created a series of 384 patient intubation angle scenarios. This data clearly showed that DLT rotation to a full 180 degrees decreased the mean intubation angle between the DLT and the proximal trachea from a mean of 66.6 ± 5.9 to only 15.8 ± 5.9 degrees. AbstractAlthough reducing conservatism would alleviate unnecessary constraints in processing, storage, transportation, and disposal of nuclear materials, excessively conservative approaches are still utilized in many safety analyses. Criticality safety limits are put in place to reduce the likelihood of having a nuclear criticality accident to a value that is deemed incredible but often utilize parameters that are conservative to the point of becoming incredible themselves. The analyses that determine criticality limits are supposed to be based on credible instead of incredible events and circumstance, highlighting the need to be able to distinguish between what is in the realm of possibility and what is not. This paper provides a quantitative approach for reducing unrealistically conservative parameters by recalculating limiting factors in a state that deviates from the worst-case scenario and assigning probability distributions to these systematic deviations. This provides a technical basis for replacing excessively conservative values with something that is both objective and reasonably bounding, which may be systematically utilized in any criticality safety analyses. The assumption of “perfect sphericity” in the TRUPACT-II package’s fissile contents model was used as an example case to demonstrate the proposed approach for replacing qualitative reductions to conservatism with quantitative reductions. Through a series of Monte Carlo calculations and statistical analyses, it was shown that conservative deviations from sphericity will provide lower keff values, where the magnitude and impact of this deviation is system specific. The statistical significance from applying probabilistic conservatism will be dependent on the chosen κ value and integration limit for the exponential distribution, as it varies the degree of conservatism applied to any parameter of interest. This approach is not limited to geometric assumptions and may be applied to a variety of conservative parameters. In an effort to move toward a standard method for reducing conservatism, this objective approach may be used in lieu of or in conjunction with subjective methods for relaxing constraints. AbstractRecent research suggests that many environmental education (EE) programs for youth in the United States focus on meeting educational standards rather than using civic engagement and advocacy techniques to promote environmental literacy. We distributed a survey to members of several EE organizations to identify which civic engagement, advocacy, and behavior change techniques a sample of EE providers feel are appropriate to use for youth at different developmental stages (grades 4–5, grades 6–8, and grades 9–12), as well as the extent to which they use them. Educators rated many techniques as less appropriate and were less likely to use them with younger age groups. We also conducted an appropriateness/use analysis to identify techniques that were deemed highly appropriate but were not used as often. The techniques related to civic engagement and advocacy for diversity, equity, and inclusion appeared underutilized. Implications of these findings for policy and practice are discussed. We evaluate here the quantum gravity partition function that counts the dimension of the Hilbert space of a simply connected spatial region of a fixed proper volume in the context of Lovelock gravity, generalizing the results for Einstein gravity. It is found that there are sphere saddle metrics for a partition function at a fixed spatial volume in Lovelock theory. Those stationary points take exactly the same forms as in Einstein gravity. The logarithm of Z corresponding to a zero effective cosmological constant indicates that the Bekenstein–Hawking entropy of the boundary area and that corresponding to a positive effective cosmological constant points to the Wald entropy of the boundary area. The ecological niche is a fundamental concept in ecology that can be used in order better understand species relationships. The overlap in species niches provides a measure of the likelihood for species to co‐occur. Most approaches that quantify niche overlap have been based on distance and similarity indices, for pairwise combinations of species. In this paper, we suggest that niche overlap can be calculated from the predictions of a model. Using a statistical model to predict niche overlap provides various benefits, includes the possibility to adjust the model to properties of the data. We demonstrate this using an example dataset of an ecological community of Foraminifera species, to which we fit a generalized linear latent variable model (GLLVM). GLLVMs are a flexible class of models that allow to estimate the distribution of species using both measured environmental predictors and residual covariation between species. We demonstrate how to calculate niche overlap from GLLVMs for any combination of species, and separately for different environments. Predicting niche overlap from a model further expands the toolset available to ecologists for the exploration of species co‐occurrence patterns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dynamic changes in astrocyte Ca2+ are recognized as contributors to functional hyperemia, a critical response to increased neuronal activity mediated by a process known as neurovascular coupling (NVC). Although the critical role of glutamatergic signaling in this process has been extensively investigated, the impact of behavioral state, and the release of behavior-associated neurotransmitters, such as norepinephrine and serotonin, on astrocyte Ca2+ dynamics and functional hyperemia have received less attention. We used two-photon imaging of the barrel cortex in awake mice to examine the role of noradrenergic and serotonergic projections in NVC. We found that both neurotransmitters facilitated sensory stimulation-induced increases in astrocyte Ca2+. Interestingly, while ablation of serotonergic neurons reduced sensory stimulation-induced functional hyperemia, ablation of noradrenergic neurons caused both attenuation and potentiation of functional hyperemia. Our study demonstrates that norepinephrine and serotonin are involved in modulating sensory stimulation-induced astrocyte Ca2+ elevations and identifies their differential effects in regulating functional hyperemia. Noradrenergic and serotonergic signaling are involved in modulating sensory stimulation-induced astrocyte Ca2+ dynamics, and each signaling pathway alters functional hyperemia differently. The environmental or habitat attributes that help to explain an endangered species' occurrence, geographic range and abundance are essential for identifying effective conservation measures to protect and maintain the species. Using binary logistic regression and geographic information system (GIS) techniques, a local species distribution model (LSDM) was devised for the endangered Mission Blue butterfly, Icaricia icarioides missionensis, at the 9,316 ha San Francisco Peninsula Watershed located in San Mateo County, CA. Due to the butterfly's close association with its larval foodplants, three perennial Lupinus (Fabaceae) taxa, these foodplants were used as a surrogate to predict previously undiscovered locations where not only the foodplants but also the Mission Blue might be found. Three environmental attributes, vegetation, soil, and geology types were identified using digital GIS data layers for 22 known foodplant locations from the northern portion of the watershed. A single logistic regression analysis determined specific vegetation, soil, and geology types that were the best predictors for occurrence of the butterfly's larval foodplants. Lupinus were strongly associated (p <0.05) with seven vegetation types (California annual grassland, Baccharis pilularis-Ceanothus thyrsiflorus scrub, B. pilularis-Nassella pulchra, B. pilularis-non-native grassland, B. pilularis-Toxicodendron diversilobium scrub, disturbed, plus roads and shoulders), six soil types (Barnabe-Candlestick complex, Candlestick-Krom-Buriburi complex, Candlestick variant loam, Fagan loam, and Miramar coarse sandy loam), and eight geology types (artificial fill, Greenstone, Sandstone, sheared rock, Granitic rocks of Montara Mountain, alluvial fan and fluvial deposits, Santa Clara formation, and Serpentinite). The GIS analyses identified 1,823 target areas, measuring 2,149 ha or 25.2% of uplands scattered throughout the watershed, which shared the same combinations of the environmental attributes that characterize known foodplant locations. Furthermore, the top target areas are combinations of the aforementioned vegetation, soil, and geology types that the logistic regression analyses confirmed were the best predictors of potential foodplant occurrence. Although the top 10 combinations of these environmental attributes included only 9.5% (205 ha) of the entire target area they included 73.6% of the total foodplant area. Using information from our initial findings and adding to it in subsequent years, our field surveys ultimately identified 119 new foodplant locations with Mission Blue also observed at 61 (51.3%). Overall, Mission Blue adults were observed at 71 (50.4%) of the 141 total foodplant locations in the watershed. All 141 foodplant locations lie within the target areas. The collective area of lupine was a mere 3.45 ha, which represents < 0.04% of uplands and 1.6% of the target areas at the watershed. Even though all portions of the watershed were surveyed, due to the scarcity of Lupinus throughout the entire watershed and small area of the vast majority of lupine patches, the LSDM proved to be extremely helpful in identifying where to focus our field surveys to search for new foodplant locations. In addition, transect counts conducted throughout the entire adult flight season were used to estimate population numbers of the butterfly along a 5.3 km stretch of an unpaved service road in the northern portion of the watershed. One of the major developments in classical black hole thermodynamics is the inclusion of vacuum energy in the form of thermodynamic pressure. Known as Black Hole Chemistry, this subdiscipline has led to the realization that anti de Sitter black holes exhibit a broad variety of phase transitions that are essentially the same as those observed in chemical systems. Since the pressure is given in terms of a negative cosmological constant (which parameterizes the vacuum energy), the holographic interpretation of Black Hole Chemistry has remained unclear. In the last few years there has been considerable progress in developing an exact dictionary between the bulk laws of Black Hole Chemistry and the laws of the dual Conformal Field Theory (CFT). Holographic Black Hole Chemistry is now becoming an established subfield, with a full thermodynamic bulk/boundary correspondence, and an emergent understanding of CFT phase behaviour and its correspondence in the bulk. What is the availability and distribution of single-day environmental education field trip programs for adolescent students across the U.S.? We assessed the spatial accessibility to EE field trip programs for U.S. schools that serve grades 5-8 (ages 10-14) by (1) compiling a comprehensive national database of 2,930 EE providers that offer field trip programs, (2) identifying 89, 311 middle schools' locations, student populations, and relevant demographic information, and (3) calculating drive times between schools and EE provider locations using a high-performance computing cluster. We then used the integrated Floating Catchment Area method to calculate each school's relative spatial access to EE field trip providers. Results suggest that spatial access was highly spatially clustered, particularly around several geographic regions (coastal California metropolitan areas, the southern Rockies, northern Kentucky, North Carolina, the western shore of Lake Michigan, and the high-density, contiguous metropolitan areas of the Northeast). Spatial access was also strongly related to partisan lean and urbanity, with more rural, White, and Republican-leaning areas generally having significantly less spatial access to EE field trips. In vitro gametogenesis (IVG) is a biotechnology that can generate mouse oocytes in a dish from stem cells giving rise to offspring. The mouse IVG technology shows the potential to create oocytes from stem cells in other mammals. Several groups have generated human primordial germ cell-like cells that can develop to the oogonial stage, but not further. Assisted reproductive technology clinics can now use human oocytes matured from small antral follicles, but this is the earliest stage of follicles that are used clinically. Researchers and several biotech companies are now striving to generate human oocytes from stem cells, to overcome the shortage of high-quality oocytes as a result of infertility or increasing age. In the space of 50 years, we have seen incredible achievements in human reproductive medicine. With these leaps forward, it is no wonder that there is a major interest in women's reproductive health research, including extension of reproductive lifespan. Substantial effort is currently being made to address this challenge, including from the commercial sector. In vitro gametogenesis (IVG) in mice is a spectacular breakthrough and has the potential to offer hope to women with intractable infertility. However, with such lofty goals, some reflection may be called for: mastering all of the techniques required for complete and safe IVG in women is likely to be extraordinarily difficult. Primates can respond to food availability shortages by increasing the energy they invest in searching for alternative food resources or by conserving energy by altering their diet while reducing movement. To gain information on the ecological flexibility of Beni titi monkeys (Plecturocebus modestus), we assessed seasonal variation in the behavior and ranging and feeding patterns of two focal groups across a year. We recorded group behaviors using instantaneous group scan sampling and used all occurrence sampling to collect ranging and feeding data (1,178 observation hours in the dry season, and 1,202 in the wet season). We collected data on food availability via monthly phenology monitoring. We found that during the fruit-scarce dry season, these frugivorous primates significantly reduced their monthly investment in moving and increased their consumption of flowers. They also showed some decrease in fruit consumption, home ranges and daily path length. Our observations of a diet shift to a high intake of alternative foods and reduction of time spent on moving suggest that the P. modestus groups that we studied used an energy-area minimizing strategy when fruits were less available. While we found that P. modestus could find food in the naturally fragmented forests, high levels of ongoing anthropogenic forest fragmentation may lead to reductions in important food resources, threatening the survival of these Endangered primates. This study shows the ecological flexibility of primates and provides important information to be incorporated in the design of specific effective conservation actions for this threatened an endemic species, as well as highlights the importance of mitigating the current threats to these forest ecosystems. In the face of reduced food availability, primates must choose between expending energy to look for adequate foraging options, or saving energy by reducing activity and intake requirements. In a 1-year study of two groups of Olalla's titi monkey (Plecturocebus olallae) in the fragmented forests of the Llanos de Moxos, Bolivia, we assessed seasonal variations in behavior, ranging, and diet to examine their ecological flexibility. We observed groups in the wet and dry seasons, recording behavior with instantaneous group scan sampling (743.5 observation hours in the dry season and 733.0 hours in the wet season) and ranging and feeding data with all occurrence sampling. At the same time, we collected data on food availability via monthly phenology monitoring. The titi monkeys fed mainly on fruits and significantly reduced the time they spent consuming fruit during the dry season compared with the wet season while showing some (nonsignificant) increase in their consumption of leaves, and other foods (seeds, lichens, and fungi). Home ranges remained relatively constant, but titi monkeys spent less time moving in the dry season than in the wet season, although this difference was not significant. The observed shift in diet toward consuming alternative foods during the fruit lean period and reducing movement instead of expanding ranging behavior to look for higher-quality foods suggests that P. olallae follows an energy–area minimizing strategy that may enable these primates to inhabit fragmented forests. Nevertheless, deforestation and further fragmentation in the range of these endemic and Critically Endangered primates must be addressed, as they represent significant threats to the severely range-restricted P. olallae populations. Our study illustrates the relevance of understanding primate ecological flexibility in response to food reductions to the development of conservation actions, especially in the light of increasing forest degradation and loss in the study region. Ecological practices such as intercropping maize (Zea mays) with cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) have been promoted to combat parasitic weeds like Striga (Striga asiatica). Intercropping has been promoted across Africa as a Striga control practice (SCP) and food security measure. Despite past efforts, millions of smallholder farmers (cultivating < 2 ha of maize) still struggle to implement SCPs. Social and ecological factors that prevent SCP implementation are well documented in the literature, but their underlying interactions have remained elusive. System dynamics modeling can uncover these interactions and assess their effect on intercropping rates as well as Striga emergence. This study presents a participatory mixed methods approach to build a system dynamics model based on two theories: diffusion of innovations and resource pool dynamics. The model estimates the population of fields where Striga emerged in response to intercropped fields when various interventions were implemented. According to model simulations, if new policies are not enacted to support intercropping, Striga is likely to spread to 2,625,000 maize fields, parasitizing almost 75% of smallholder farms across Central Malawi by 2036. The participatory approach allowed us to evaluate several policies, one of which sustained enough adopters to limit Striga emergence to < 500,000 fields, reducing the weed's threat to food security. This policy considers how input costs and erratic rainfall can lead to disadoption, therefore, supporting the implementation of five to six consecutive years of intercropping by providing both fertilizer subsidies and demonstration plots. Conflicts between humans and mesopredators are frequent and widespread. Over the last decades, conflicts have led to the development and application of different mitigation methods to diminish the costs and damage caused by such conflicts. We conducted a systematic literature search and meta‐analysis to assess the influence of different mitigation methods on 3 common nuisance species: raccoons (Procyon lotor), red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), and striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis). A majority of the studies, from 1963‒2022, were conducted in North America, followed by Australia and Europe. The predation of wildlife species of conservation concern by nuisance species is the main reported source of conflict in the published literature. Lethal control is the most commonly tested method and is generally effective at reducing conflicts based on the calculated effect size. Barriers have mixed effects, with electric fences and nest exclosures both being effective, whereas conventional fences seem to be less effective. Repellents mimicking predators (e.g., guard animal, predator smell) are also effective. Conditioned taste aversion is a promising approach, but no precise product or chemical has proven to be effective. Many interventions suffered from a lack of validation through experimental approach. Research on human–mesopredator conflict mitigation would benefit from repeated studies using the same methods in similar contexts, thus reducing heterogeneity in the results, and by testing new and innovative methods. BACKGROUND While oocyte IVM is practiced sporadically it has not achieved widespread clinical practice globally. However, recently there have been some seminal advances in our understanding of basic aspects of oocyte biology and ovulation from animal studies that have led to novel approaches to IVM. A significant recent advance in IVM technology is the use of biphasic IVM approaches. These involve the collection of immature oocytes from small antral follicles from minimally stimulated patients/animals (without hCG-priming) and an ∼24 h pre-culture of oocytes in an advanced culture system ('pre-IVM') prior to IVM, followed by routine IVF procedures. If safe and efficacious, this novel procedure may stand to make a significant impact on human ART practices. OBJECTIVE AND RATIONALE The objectives of this review are to examine the major scientific advances in ovarian biology with a unique focus on the development of pre-IVM methodologies, to provide an insight into biphasic IVM procedures, and to report on outcomes from animal and clinical human data, including safety data. The potential future impact of biphasic IVM on ART practice is discussed. SEARCH METHODS Peer review original and review articles were selected from PubMed and Web of Science searches for this narrative review. Searches were performed using the following keywords: oocyte IVM, pre-IVM, biphasic IVM, CAPA-IVM, hCG-triggered/primed IVM, natural cycle IVF/M, ex-vivo IVM, OTO-IVM, oocyte maturation, meiotic competence, oocyte developmental competence, oocyte capacitation, follicle size, cumulus cell (CC), granulosa cell, COC, gap-junction communication, trans-zonal process, cAMP and IVM, cGMP and IVM, CNP and IVM, EGF-like peptide and IVM, minimal stimulation ART, PCOS. OUTCOMES Minimizing gonadotrophin use means IVM oocytes will be collected from small antral (pre-dominant) follicles containing oocytes that are still developing. Standard IVM yields suboptimal clinical outcomes using such oocytes, whereas pre-IVM aims to continue the oocyte's development ex vivo , prior to IVM. Pre-IVM achieves this by eliciting profound cellular changes in the oocyte's CCs, which continue to meet the oocyte's developmental needs during the pre-IVM phase. The literature contains 25 years of animal research on various pre-IVM and biphasic IVM procedures, which serves as a large knowledge base for new approaches to human IVM. A pre-IVM procedure based on c-type natriuretic peptide (named 'capacitation-IVM' (CAPA-IVM)) has undergone pre-clinical human safety and efficacy trials and its adoption into clinical practice resulted in healthy live birth rates not different from conventional IVF. WIDER IMPLICATIONS Over many decades, improvements in clinical IVM have been gradual and incremental but there has likely been a turning of the tide in the past few years, with landmark discoveries in animal oocyte biology finally making their way into clinical practice leading to improved outcomes for patients. Demonstration of favorable clinical results with CAPA-IVM, as the first clinically tested biphasic IVM system, has led to renewed interest in IVM as an alternative, low-intervention, low-cost, safe, patient-friendly ART approach, and especially for patients with PCOS. Drought and population growth, especially in the western United States, are propelling a need for more efficient irrigation. Smart irrigation controllers, which interface with soil moisture, evapotranspiration (ET), or weather sensors, have been promoted as a demand-side management tool for this purpose. This paper reviews the body of research on residential smart irrigation controllers and their effectiveness. We find that smart irrigation controllers consistently reduce water demand by 15% among general users and more than 40% among indulgent users. Gaps in research include studies addressing peak demand reduction, centralized communication, data verifiability, and human factors of landscape management. Future work may develop techniques for coordinating networks of smart irrigation controllers to enable greater shifting and shaving of discretionary irrigation demands, similar to what is already happening in the electric grid, thereby creating an integrated water distribution system (IWDS). An IWDS may utilize smart irrigation controllers as direct load control devices at customer end points and interface with advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems at a central location to create more effective demand-side management (DSM) strategies for water conservation. Weather-based irrigation controllers (WBICs) have become the prevalent smart controllers used for residential irrigation scheduling. They are easy to install, have smartphone control, are easy to program, utilize local real-time weather data, prevent operating the irrigation system during rain or other adverse weather events, adjust watering schedules and duration seasonally, conserve water, and reduce water billing costs. In addition to the ease of use and benefits at the residential user level, smart irrigation controllers have the potential to provide the water utility with controls to buffer or shift peak irrigation demands. This buffering and shifting of peak demands have the potential to lower energy costs, decrease the carbon footprint, and delay costly infrastructure upgrades. With technological advancements and the proliferation of smart controllers, the future for water utilities will become more similar to the electrical grid industry. The smart controllers and technology will enable the development of the IWDS. The IWDS will allow the water utility to utilize data from AMI meters, SCADA systems, smart irrigation controllers, artificial intelligence, and other smart technology to operate more effectively and efficiently. Allonursing is the nursing of the offspring of other mothers. Cooperation is an emergent property of evolved decision rules. Cooperation can be explained by at least three evolved decision rules: 1) direct reciprocity, i.e. help someone who previously helped you, 2) kin discrimination, i.e. preferentially direct help to kin than to non-kin, and 3) generalized reciprocity, i.e. help anyone if helped by someone. We assessed if semi-domesticated reindeer, Rangifer tarandus, mothers allonursed according to the decision rules of direct reciprocity, generalized reciprocity and kin discrimination over 2 years. To assess if reindeer mothers allonursed according to the direct reciprocity decision rule, we predicted that mothers should give more help to those who previously helped them more often. To assess if reindeer mothers allonursed according to the kin discrimination decision rule, we predicted that help given should increase as pairwise genetic relatedness increased. To assess if reindeer mothers allonursed according to the generalized reciprocity decision rule, we predicted that the overall number of help given by reindeer mothers should increase as the overall number of help received by reindeer mothers increased. The number of help given i) increased as the number of help received from the same partner increased in the 2012 group but not in both 2013 groups, ii) was not influenced by relatedness, and iii) was not influenced by an interaction between the number of help received from the same partner and relatedness. iv) The overall number of help given increased as the overall number of help received increased. The results did not support the prediction that reindeer mothers allonursed according to the kin discrimination decision rule. Climate changepoint (homogenization) methods abound today, with a myriad of techniques existing in both the climate and statistics literature. Unfortunately, the appropriate changepoint technique to use remains unclear to many. Further complicating issues, changepoint conclusions are not robust to perturbations in assumptions; for example, allowing for a trend or correlation in the series can drastically change changepoint conclusions. This paper is a review of the topic, with an emphasis on illuminating the models and techniques that allow the scientist to make reliable conclusions. Pitfalls to avoid are demonstrated via actual applications. The discourse begins by narrating the salient statistical features of most climate time series. Thereafter, single- and multiple-changepoint problems are considered. Several pitfalls are discussed en route and good practices are recommended. While most of our applications involve temperatures, a sea ice series is also considered. Significance Statement: This paper reviews the methods used to identify and analyze the changepoints in climate data, with a focus on helping scientists make reliable conclusions. The paper discusses common mistakes and pitfalls to avoid in changepoint analysis and provides recommendations for best practices. The paper also provides examples of how these methods have been applied to temperature and sea ice data. Variants in the patatin-like phospholipase domain containing 6 (PNPLA6) gene cause a broad spectrum of neurological disorders characterized by gait disturbance, visual impairment, anterior hypopituitarism, and hair anomalies. This review examines the clinical, cellular, and biochemical features found across the five PNPLA6-related diseases, with a focus on future questions to be addressed. A literature review was performed on published clinical reports on patients with PNPLA6 variants. Additionally, in vitro and in vivo models used to study the encoded protein, Neuropathy Target Esterase (NTE), are summarized to lend mechanistic perspective to human diseases. Biallelic pathogenic PNPLA6 variants cause five systemic neurological disorders: spastic paraplegia type 39, Gordon-Holmes, Boucher-Neuhäuser, Laurence-Moon, and Oliver-McFarlane syndromes. PNPLA6 encodes NTE, an enzyme involved in maintaining phospholipid homeostasis and trafficking in the nervous system. Retinal disease presents with a unique chorioretinal dystrophy that is phenotypically similar to choroideremia and Leber congenital amaurosis. Animal and cellular models support a loss-of-function mechanism. Clinicians should be aware of choroideremia-like ocular presentation in patients who also experience growth defects, motor dysfunction, and/or hair anomalies. Although NTE biochemistry is well characterized, further research on the relationship between genotype and the presence or absence of retinopathy should be explored to improve diagnosis and prognosis. Water and wastewater utilities consume significant energy. While they are regulated on water quality and other environmental issues, energy management is largely optional. In between enforceable public policy and voluntary internal action, professional associations can influence their industries to act. In this perspective article, we discuss 10 policy statements from three professional associations in the water sector and discuss how they support energy management. While few of the statements directly address energy management, we conclude that they justify it in terms of ethics, sustainability, affordability, and asset management. Still, their disparate nature exposes a policy gap. We recommend that the associations develop definitive policy statements on the subject to clarify their positions and set expectations. Base rate reasoning as assessed on Base rate neglect (BRN) Tasks has been studied extensively, with a sizable body of findings indicating that both logical (base rate) and belief-based (case description) processing contribute to responses on the task. Various task conditions have been found to influence which type of processing controls responding. The present study compares two instructional sets, one which requires responding in terms of the base rate information and one which requires responding in accordance with the case description. This manipulation allows for a distinction between explicit processing (set-consistent) and implicit processing (set-inconsistent and potentially interfering). We also manipulated the extremity of the base rates employed in the task and the extremity of the stereotypes contained in the case description. We argue that extremity effects should be present in implicit, but not explicit, processing, suggesting that these effects are the result of limitations in the control of set-inconsistent processing. The results generally supported the predictions. In addition, a proclivity for analytical thinking, as measured by actively open-minded thinking (AOT), was associated with less interference of belief-based processing on logical responding, but greater interference of logical processing on belief-based responding. Simple Summary: Mormon crickets (Anabrus simplex) are omnivorous, feeding on plants, fungi, and insects, including one another. Because insects contain more protein than plants, prey availability might determine the protein consumed by Mormon crickets. Some grasshoppers co-occur with Mormon crickets and feed on the same hostplants, but little is known about their interactions. We hypothesized that if Mormon crickets feed on grasshoppers, then the Mormon crickets' needs for alternative protein sources would decline when grasshoppers were more numerous. In addition, because Mormon crickets with less dietary protein had less immunity, we hypothesized that greater grasshopper density would enhance Mormon cricket immunity. In a field setting, we varied the numbers of Mormon crickets from 0 to 20 and the numbers of grasshoppers Melanoplus borealis from 0 to 45 m−2 in 68 1-m2 cages. After one month, we measured Mormon cricket dietary preferences and immune activity. As predicted, we found that protein consumption from the alternative source declined as grasshopper density increased, and immunocompetence increased with grasshopper availability. In addition, plant nitrogen declined with increasing insect density, reinforcing the importance of predation by Mormon crickets to meet their protein needs. Potentially influencing management decisions, Mormon crickets affect grasshopper populations, and grasshopper abundance might be an indicator of Mormon cricket immunity. In addition to feeding on plants, Mormon crickets Anabrus simplex Haldeman, 1852 predate on invertebrates, including one another, which effectively drives their migration. Carnivory derives from lack of dietary protein, with Mormon crickets deprived of protein having less phenoloxidase (PO) available to combat foreign invaders, such as fungal pathogens. Because Mormon crickets commonly occur with grasshoppers that feed on the same plants, we investigated interactions between grasshoppers and Mormon crickets, and hypothesized that if Mormon crickets are predatory on grasshoppers, grasshopper abundance would influence the protein available to Mormon crickets and their immunity. In a field setting, we varied densities of Mormon crickets (0, 10, or 20 per cage) and grasshoppers Melanoplus borealis (0, 15, 30, or 45) in 68 1-m2 cages. After one month, we measured Mormon cricket dietary preferences and PO activity. As predicted, artificial diet consumption shifted away from protein as grasshopper density increased, and immunocompetence, as measured by PO activity, also increased with grasshopper availability. Although nitrogen availability in the vegetation decreased with increasing insect density, predation became an important source of protein for Mormon crickets that enhanced immunity. • We analyze the cycling behavior of over 2,400 New Jersey adults before, during, and after the pandemic. • Half of the cyclists report that they will cycle more post-COVID, compared to before the pandemic began. • Working from home was associated with purchasing a bicycle during the pandemic, and increased cycling during and expected after the pandemic. • Changes to the infrastructure (e.g., pop-up bike lanes, lane closures) are positively associated with cycling. Anecdotal evidence suggests that cycling boomed during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many shops ran out of bicycles for sale. However, it is not known whether increased cycling activity has continued. Using evidence from two representative online panel surveys, comprising over 2,400 New Jersey residents, we analyze bicycle ownership, purchasing, usage during the pandemic and intention to use after the pandemic subsides. We estimate multivariate models and find that the odds that a respondent intends to cycle more in the future (compared to prior to the pandemic) are 4.5 times higher if they have noticed positive changes to their neighborhood during the pandemic. Moreover, the odds that a respondent intends to cycle more are two times higher if they worked from home, compared to working outside the home. Our findings suggest that infrastructure changes successfully induced cycling during the pandemic and increased the intention to cycle in the future. Additionally, because the uptake in cycling has been larger for people who work from home, we highlight the importance of focusing on bicycle infrastructure related to recreation and exercise, in addition to commuting. The elderly population is increasing at a rapid rate, and the need for effectively supporting independent living has become crucial. Wearable sensors can be helpful, but these are intrusive as they require adherence by the elderly. Thus, a semi-anonymous (no image records) vision-based non-intrusive monitoring system might potentially be the answer. As everyone has to eat, we introduce a first investigation into how eating behavior might be used as an indicator of performance changes. This study aims to provide a comprehensive model of the eating behavior of individuals. This includes creating a visual representation of the different actions involved in the eating process, in the form of a state diagram, as well as measuring the level of performance or decay over time during eating. Also, in studies that involve humans, getting a generalized model across numerous human subjects is challenging, as indicative features that parametrize decay/performance changes vary significantly from person to person. We present a two-step approach to get a generalized model using distinctive micro-movements, i.e., (1) get the best features across all subjects (all features are extracted from 3D poses of subjects) and (2) use an uncertainty-aware regression model to tackle the problem. Purpose/Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing health inequities for people with disabilities (PWD), including disparities in mental health needs and service use. The present study investigated prospective predisposing, enabling, and illness-related correlates of mental health service need and use among PWD during the COVID-19 pandemic. Research Method/Design: Data were collected online at two time points: October–December 2020 and October–December 2021. U.S. adults with disabilities completed self-report measures on demographic and disability characteristics, pandemic-related stressors (e.g., worries about COVID-19), depression, anxiety, barriers to service use, and perceived mental health needs and service use. Two logistic regressions were used to examine the effect of predisposing, enabling, psychosocial barriers, and illness-related factors on perceived mental health service need and service use. Results: Perceptions of mental health service needs were significantly predicted by gender (female-identified, transgender and gender diverse [TGD]), younger age, increased depressive symptoms, and presence of a prepandemic mental health condition. Among those who reported a perceived need, mental health service use was predicted by gender (female-identified and TGD), greater income, lower frequency of anticipated provider disability bias, and presence of a prepandemic mental health condition. Conclusions/Implications: This study provides vital descriptive data on the pattern of mental health service utilization among PWD during the COVID-19 pandemic, a uniquely disruptive, challenging time. Findings further underscore the necessity of providing disability competency training and bias reduction interventions to mental health professionals, as anticipated provider disability bias was a key factor in nonservice use of PWD. Impact and Implications: In a two-wave study of adults with a wide range of visible and invisible disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic, we found that perceived disability bias from providers significantly predicted a lower likelihood of mental health service use. These findings point to the urgent need for disability competency training and stigma reduction interventions geared toward mental health professionals. Additionally, we found that specific subpopulations of the disability community (e.g., female and transgender/gender diverse, more depressed, and younger individuals) have higher mental health needs and that low-income adults with disabilities were less likely to use mental health services. These findings highlight the importance of attending to multiply marginalized members of the disability community when assessing the mental health needs of people with disabilities. STUDY QUESTION What metabolic pathways and metabolites in the serum and follicular fluid are associated with peak estradiol levels and the number of mature oocytes? SUMMARY ANSWER In the serum metabolome, mostly fatty acid and amino acid pathways were associated with estradiol levels and mature oocytes while in the follicular fluid metabolome, mostly lipid, vitamin, and hormone pathways were associated with peak estradiol levels and mature oocytes. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Metabolomics has identified several metabolic pathways and metabolites associated with infertility but limited data are available for ovarian stimulation outcomes. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION A prospective cohort study of women undergoing IVF from 2009 to 2015. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS A total of 125 women undergoing a fresh IVF cycle at a fertility clinic in the Northeast United States who provided a serum and follicular fluid sample. Untargeted metabolomics profiling was conducted using liquid chromatography with high-resolution mass spectrometry in two chromatography columns (C18 and hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC)). The main ovarian stimulation outcomes were peak serum estradiol levels and number of mature oocytes. We utilized adjusted generalized linear regression models to identify significant metabolic features. Models were adjusted for age,BMI, initial infertility diagnosis, and ovarian stimulation protocol. We then conducted pathway analysis using mummichog and metabolite annotation using level-1 evidence. MAIN RESULTS AND ROLE OF CHANCE In the serum metabolome, 480 and 850 features were associated with peak estradiol levels in the C18 and HILIC columns, respectively. Additionally, 437 and 538 features were associated with mature oocytes in the C18 and HILIC columns, respectively. In the follicular fluid metabolome, 752 and 929 features were associated with peak estradiol levels in the C18 and HILIC columns, respectively, Additionally, 993 and 986 features were associated with mature oocytes in the C18 and HILIC columns, respectively. The most common pathways associated with peak estradiol included fatty acids (serum and follicular fluid), hormone (follicular fluid), and lipid pathways (follicular fluid). The most common pathways associated with the number of mature oocytes retrieved included amino acids (serum), fatty acids (serum and follicular fluid), hormone (follicular fluid), and vitamin pathways(follicular fluid). The vitamin D3 pathway had the strongest association with both ovarian stimulation outcomes in the follicularfluid. Four and nine metabolites were identified using level-1 evidence (validated identification) in the serum and follicular fluid metabolomes, respectively. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION Our sample was majority White and highly educated and may not be generalizable to thewider population. Additionally, residual confounding is possible and the flushing medium used in the follicular fluid could have diluted our results. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS The pathways and metabolites identified by our study provide novel insights into the biologicalmechanisms in the serum and follicular fluid that may underlie follicular and oocyte development, which could potentially be used to improve ovarian stimulation outcomes. AbstractBayesian Optimization (BO) links Gaussian Process (GP) surrogates with sequential design toward optimizing expensive-to-evaluate black-box functions. Example design heuristics, or so-called acquisition functions, like expected improvement, balance exploration and exploitation to furnish global solutions under stringent evaluation budgets. However, they fall short when solving for robust optima, meaning a preference for solutions in a wider domain of attraction. Robust solutions are useful when inputs are imprecisely specified, or where a series of solutions is desired. A common mathematical programming technique in such settings involves an adversarial objective, biasing a local solver away from “sharp” troughs. Here we propose a surrogate modeling and active learning technique called robust expected improvement that ports adversarial methodology into the BO/GP framework. Background: Hepatitis Virus C (HCV) infection rates have trended upwards among pregnant people in the USA since 2009. Existing evidence about HCV infections and maternal outcomes is limited; therefore, we used birth certificate data to investigate the association between HCV infection and maternal health outcomes. Methods: We used the 2017 US birth certificate dataset (a cross-section of 1.4 million birth records) to assess the association between prevalent HCV infection and gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, and eclampsia. Potential confounding variables included prenatal care, age, education, smoking, presence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), body mass index (BMI), and weight gain during pregnancy. We restricted our analysis to only women with a first singleton pregnancy. Odds ratios were estimated by logistic regression models and separate models were tested for white and Black women. Results: Only 0.31% of the women in our sample were infected with HCV (n = 4412). In an unadjusted model, we observed a modest significant protective association between HCV infection and gestational diabetes (Odds ratio [OR]: 0.83; 95% CI: 0.76–0.96); but this was attenuated with adjustment for confounding variables (Adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 0.88; 95% CI: 0.76, 1.02). There was no association between HCV and gestational hypertension (AOR: 1.03; 95% CI: 0.91, 1.16) or eclampsia (AOR: 1.15; 95% CI: 0.69, 1.93). Results from the race stratified models were similar to the non-stratified summary models. Conclusion: We observed no statistically significant associations between maternal HCV infection with maternal health outcomes. Although, our analysis did indicate that HCV may lower the risk of gestational diabetes, this may be attributable to confounding. Studies utilizing more accurately measured HCV infection including those collecting type and timing of testing, and timing of infection are warranted to ensure HCV does not adversely impact maternal and/or fetal health. The quantum superposition principle states that quantum-mechanical systems such as atoms can be placed in a superposition of mass-energy eigenstates. Inspired by this idea and the seminal conjecture of Bekenstein, who proposed that black holes in quantum gravity must possess a discrete mass eigenspectrum, here we analyze the effects produced by a black hole in a superposition of masses. Analogous to using the electromagnetic field to probe atoms, we consider a quantum scalar field on the spacetime background sourced by the black hole mass superposition. From the resulting spectra, as measured by a hypothetical two-level system interacting with the field, we infer signatures of discretization of the black hole mass in support of Bekenstein's conjecture.
