The Abbott Power Plant at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) provides a unique facility for testing carbon capture, utilization, and energy storage technologies. This combined heat and power (CHP) facility supplies power and electricity for the needs of the UIUC campus. Despite being an operational plant, Abbott Power Plant is actively engaged in a variety of projects. These projects range in technology readiness level (TRL) and demonstrate the ability of the plant to couple field research with operational excellence. While the plant is a fossil asset (e.g., coal and natural gas boilers), it is connected through the campus grid to renewables. This connectivity provides the ability to evaluate how new technologies (e.g., capture, utilization, and energy storage) respond to variations in the grid due to the increased penetration of variable renewables. Because the plant is located on the UIUC campus, it is also engaged in educational activities at both the undergraduate and graduate level. The ability of the plant to couple operational excellence with research and development (R&D) and education makes it an important asset for the evaluation of new technologies.

Introduction Hemiplegic migraine is a particularly severe form of the disease that often evolves to a debilitating chronic illness that is resistant to commonly available therapies. Peripheral neurostimulation has been found to be a beneficial therapy for some patients among several diagnostic classes of migraine, but its potential has not been specifically evaluated for hemiplegic migraine. Materials and Methods Four patients with hemiplegic migraine were treated with concordant, combined occipital and supraorbital neurostimulation over periods ranging 6–92 months. The clinical indicators followed included assessments of headache frequency and severity, frequency of hemiplegic episodes, functional impairment, medication usage, and patient satisfaction. Results All reported a positive therapeutic response, as their average headache frequency decreased by 92% (30 to 2.5 headache days/month); Visual Analog Score by 44% (9.5 to 5.3); frequency of hemiplegic episodes by 96% (7.5 to 0.25 hemiplegic episodes/month); headache medication usage by 96% (6 to 0.25 daily medications); and Migraine Disability Assessment score by 98% (249 to 6). All were satisfied and would recommend the therapy, and all preferred combined occipital–supraorbital neurostimulation to occipital neurostimulation alone. Conclusions Concordant combined occipital and supraorbital neurostimulation may provide effective therapy for both the pain and motor aura in some patients with hemiplegic migraine.

La doctrine des banques centrales ainsi que leur cadre strategique ont ete soumis a rude epreuve lors de la crise financiere : leur objectif de stabilite des prix etait defini de facon trop etroite et les considerations de stabilite financiere laissees au second plan. Lorsque les taux d’interet directeurs nominaux ont heurte leur « contrainte zero », les banques centrales ont du mettre en œuvre des mesures non conventionnelles les conduisant a sortir tres largement des limites fixees par leur mandat de stabilite des prix. Paradoxalement, au sortir de la crise, le cadre strategique des banques centrales ne semble pas fondamentalement remis en cause. Leur mandat a meme ete etendu pour integrer de nouvelles missions en matiere de politique macroprudentielle et, dans certains cas, la supervision microprudentielle. Le principal defi souleve par la centralisation de toutes ces fonctions au sein des banques centrales est leur capacite a les mener en toute independance. Or l’independance est la condition premiere du succes de leurs missions traditionnelles de maintien de la stabilite des prix et de preteur en dernier ressort.Classification JEL : E41, E52, E58, E63.

Motivation In 2012, Iqbal et al. introduced the colored de Bruijn graph, a variant of the classic de Bruijn graph, which is aimed at ‘detecting and genotyping simple and complex genetic variants in an individual or population’. Because they are intended to be applied to massive population level data, it is essential that the graphs be represented efficiently. Unfortunately, current succinct de Bruijn graph representations are not directly applicable to the colored de Bruijn graph, which requires additional information to be succinctly encoded as well as support for non-standard traversal operations. Results Our data structure dramatically reduces the amount of memory required to store and use the colored de Bruijn graph, with some penalty to runtime, allowing it to be applied in much larger and more ambitious sequence projects than was previously possible. Die Eurokrise hat ihren Ursprung nicht nur in einer Staatsschuldenkrise. Sie wurde ebenfalls durch eine Zahlungsbilanzkrise verursacht. Ein breit gefächerter Ansatz in der Wirtschaftspolitik ist daher erforderlich, um die Eurozone auf einen nachhaltig stabilen und dynamischen Wachstumspfad zurückzubringen. A multi-faceted approach is required for the euro area to restore sustainable growth and prevent a vicious circle of public- and private-sector deleveraging leading to weaker economic activity which in turn results in a further deterioration in banks' asset quality. While avoiding discretionary fiscal expansion, creditor countries should work together with debtor countries to accelerate micro-economic reforms in product, services and labor markets to achieve greater macro-economic convergence in the euro area. This, with together the restoration of the health and resilience of the banking sector, is the key to the area's viability. The ECB's policy to avoid any deflationary bias while stabilizing inflation at or around 2 per cent for the euro-area as a whole should be another component of such an approach.

Integration and divergence : Europe faces its disparities This article comments on certain facts relating to the gaps, revealed by statistics, in the economic situations of EU member countries, and in particular those countries in the Euro Zone. It analyses currency-based differences by examining the gaps in inflation rates, price trends in certain sectors (real estate, services, energy), the impact of taxation and the perception of inflation, as well as their implications in terms of monetary policy. Also analysed are the divergence factors related to social organisation in EU member countries and which impact salary negotiations, public finances and the actual economy. Objective The protein Hwp1, expressed on the pathogenic phase of Candida albicans, presents sequence analogy with the gluten protein gliadin and is also a substrate for transglutaminase. This had led to the suggestion that C. albicans infection (CI) may be a triggering factor for Celiac disease (CeD) onset. We investigated cross-immune reactivity between CeD and CI. Methods Serum IgG levels against recombinant Hwp1 and serological markers of CeD were measured in 87 CeD patients, 41 CI patients, and 98 healthy controls (HC). IgA and IgG were also measured in 20 individuals from each of these groups using microchips sensitized with 38 peptides designed from the N-terminal of Hwp1. Results CI and CeD patients had higher levels of anti-Hwp1 (p= 0.0005 and p= 0.004) and anti-gliadin (p= 0.002 and p= 0.0009) antibodies than HC but there was no significant difference between CeD and CI patients. CeD and CI patients had higher levels of anti-transglutaminase IgA than HC (p= 0.0001 and p= 0.0039). During CI, the increase in anti-Hwp1 paralleled the increase in anti-gliadin antibodies. Microchip analysis showed that CeD patients were more reactive against some Hwp1 peptides than CI patients, and that some deamidated peptides were more reactive than their native analogs. Binding of IgG from CeD patients to Hwp1 peptides was inhibited by gamma III gliadin peptides. Conclusions Humoral cross-reactivity between Hwp1 and gliadin was observed during CeD and CI. Increased reactivity to Hwp1 deamidated peptide suggests that transglutaminase is involved in this interplay. These results support the hypothesis that CI may trigger CeD onset in genetically-susceptible individuals. How can we complete the integration of the European capital market ? From the outset, the euro has benefited from an almost perfectly integrated interbank market. The network of central banks oversees the real-time circulation of central money across the entire European Union. By contrast, the securities and derivatives market has proved much harder to integrate. Indeed, the technical complexity and financial interests of market participants have been and remain real obstacles. Certainly, progress has been made after the Commission's action plan on financial services and following the reform of the decision-making process upon the recommendations of the committee of experts chaired by Alexandre Lamfalussy. However, there is still a long way to go to reach the target of integration. The main challenges appear to be in the areas of law, regulation and supervision and in the role of a central depositary.
