Understanding activity levels during fasting is important for promoting healthy fasting practices. While most existing studies focus on step counts to objectively assess the impact of fasting on activity levels and behavioral changes, the results have been mixed. Despite evidence showing that individuals spend a significant amount of time sitting while fasting, there has been no objective measurement of body movement or activity levels during sitting and fasting. This research employs a video-based, unobtrusive human body movement measurement system to monitor upper body movements during fasting and non-fasting periods over several days. Key movement features, such as inactivity, movement speed, and movement scale, were automatically extracted from the video monitoring data using a computer vision pipeline. These features were then statistically compared using t tests between fasting and non-fasting periods, analyzed by hour of the day and across different days. The results of the monitoring of five participants during typical daily sitting office work and fasting for 3–5 days indicate no consistent pattern of upper body movement changes due to fasting among the participants.

Timely information about the need to thin forests is vital in forest management to maintain a healthy forest while maximizing income. Currently, very-high-spatial-resolution remote sensing data can provide crucial assistance to experts when evaluating the maturity of thinnings. Nevertheless, this task is still predominantly carried out in the field and demands extensive resources. This paper presents a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) to detect the necessity and urgency of carrying out thinnings using only remote sensing data. The approach uses very-high-spatial-resolution RGB and near-infrared orthophotos; a canopy height model (CHM); a digital terrain model (DTM); the slope; and reference data, which, in this case, originate from spruce-dominated forests in the Austrian Alps. After tuning, the model achieves an F1 score of 82.23% on our test data, which indicates that the model is usable in a practical setting. We conclude that DCNNs are capable of detecting the need to carry out thinnings in forests. In contrast, attempts to assess the urgency of the need for thinnings with DCNNs proved to be unsuccessful. However, additional data, such as age or yield class, have the potential to improve the results. Our investigation into the influence of each individual input feature shows that orthophotos appear to contain the most relevant information for detecting the need for thinning. Moreover, we observe a gain in performance when adding the CHM and slope, whereas adding the DTM harms the model’s performance.

The average error rate in liver cirrhosis classification on B-mode ultrasound images using the traditional pattern recognition approach is still too high. In order to improve the liver cirrhosis classification performance, image correction methods and a convolution neural network (CNN) approach are focused on. The impact of image correction methods on region of interest (ROI) images that are input into the CNN for the purpose of classifying liver cirrhosis based on data from B-mode ultrasound images is investigated. In this paper, image correction methods based on tone curves are developed. The experimental results show positive benefits from the image correction methods by improving the image quality of ROI images. By enhancing the image contrast of ROI images, the image quality improves and thus the generalization ability of the CNN also improves.

This paper reviews recent deep learning-based registration methods. Registration is the process that computes the transformation that aligns datasets, and the accuracy of the result depends on multiple factors. The most significant factors are the size of input data; the presence of noise, outliers and occlusions; the quality of the extracted features; real-time requirements; and the type of transformation, especially those defined by multiple parameters, such as non-rigid deformations. Deep Registration Networks (DRNs) are those architectures trying to solve the alignment task using a learning algorithm. In this review, we classify these methods according to a proposed framework based on the traditional registration pipeline. This pipeline consists of four steps: target selection, feature extraction, feature matching, and transform computation for the alignment. This new paradigm introduces a higher-level understanding of registration, which makes explicit the challenging problems of traditional approaches. The main contribution of this work is to provide a comprehensive starting point to address registration problems from a learning-based perspective and to understand the new range of possibilities.

This research aims to improve dietetic-nutritional treatment using state-of-the-art RGB-D sensors and virtual reality (VR) technology. Recent studies show that adherence to treatment can be improved using multimedia technologies. However, there are few studies using 3D data and VR technologies for this purpose. On the other hand, obtaining 3D measurements of the human body and analyzing them over time (4D) in patients undergoing dietary treatment is a challenging field. The main contribution of the work is to provide a framework to study the effect of 4D body model visualization on adherence to obesity treatment. The system can obtain a complete 3D model of a body using low-cost technology, allowing future straightforward transference with sufficient accuracy and realistic visualization, enabling the analysis of the evolution (4D) of the shape during the treatment of obesity. The 3D body models will be used for studying the effect of visualization on adherence to obesity treatment using 2D and VR devices. Moreover, we will use the acquired 3D models to obtain measurements of the body. An analysis of the accuracy of the proposed methods for obtaining measurements with both synthetic and real objects has been carried out.

Across the globe, remote image data is rapidly being collected for the assessment of benthic communities from shallow to extremely deep waters on continental slopes to the abyssal seas. Exploiting this data is presently limited by the time it takes for experts to identify organisms found in these images. With this limitation in mind, a large effort has been made globally to introduce automation and machine learning algorithms to accelerate both classification and assessment of marine benthic biota. One major issue lies with organisms that move with swell and currents, such as kelps. This paper presents an automatic hierarchical classification method local binary classification as opposed to the conventional flat classification to classify kelps in images collected by autonomous underwater vehicles. The proposed kelp classification approach exploits learned feature representations extracted from deep residual networks. We show that these generic features outperform the traditional off-the-shelf CNN features and the conventional hand-crafted features. Experiments also demonstrate that the hierarchical classification method outperforms the traditional parallel multi-class classifications by a significant margin (90.0% vs. 57.6% and 77.2% vs. 59.0%) on Benthoz15 and Rottnest datasets respectively. Furthermore, we compare different hierarchical classification approaches and experimentally show that the sibling hierarchical training approach outperforms the inclusive hierarchical approach by a significant margin. We also report an application of our proposed method to study the change in kelp cover over time for annually repeated AUV surveys.

This paper describes a system capable of obtaining the complete 3D model of a body with high accuracy and a realistic visualization for 2D and VR devices to be used for studying the effect of 3D technologies on adherence to obesity treatment.

We present a method to detect maritime oil spills from Side-Looking Airborne Radar (SLAR) sensors mounted on aircraft in order to enable a quick response of emergency services when an oil spill occurs. The proposed approach introduces a new type of neural architecture named Convolutional Long Short Term Memory Selectional AutoEncoders (CMSAE) which allows the simultaneous segmentation of multiple classes such as coast, oil spill and ships. Unlike previous works using full SLAR images, in this work only a few scanlines from the beam-scanning of radar are needed to perform the detection. The main objective is to develop a method that performs accurate segmentation using only the current and previous sensor information, in order to return a real-time response during the flight. The proposed architecture uses a series of CMSAE networks to process in parallel each of the objectives defined as different classes. The output of these networks are given to a machine learning classifier to perform the final detection. Results show that the proposed approach can reliably detect oil spills and other maritime objects in SLAR sequences, outperforming the accuracy of previous state-of-the-art methods and with a response time of only 0.76 s.

Refining raw disparity maps from different algorithms to exploit their complementary advantages is still challenging. Uncertainty estimation and complex disparity relationships among pixels limit the accuracy and robustness of existing methods and there is no standard method for fusion of different kinds of depth data. In this paper, we introduce a new method to fuse disparity maps from different sources, while incorporating supplementary information (intensity, gradient, etc.) into a refiner network to better refine raw disparity inputs. A discriminator network classifies disparities at different receptive fields and scales. Assuming a Markov Random Field for the refined disparity map produces better estimates of the true disparity distribution. Both fully supervised and semi-supervised versions of the algorithm are proposed. The approach includes a more robust loss function to inpaint invalid disparity values and requires much less labeled data to train in the semi-supervised learning mode. The algorithm can be generalized to fuse depths from different kinds of depth sources. Experiments explored different fusion opportunities: stereo-monocular fusion, stereo-ToF fusion and stereo-stereo fusion. The experiments show the superiority of the proposed algorithm compared with the most recent algorithms on public synthetic datasets (Scene Flow, SYNTH3, our synthetic garden dataset) and real datasets (Kitti2015 dataset and Trimbot2020 Garden dataset).

The advance of scene understanding methods based on machine learning relies on the availability of large ground truth datasets, which are essential for their training and evaluation. Construction of such datasets with imagery from real sensor data however typically requires much manual annotation of semantic regions in the data, delivered by substantial human labour. To speed up this process, we propose a framework for semantic annotation of scenes captured by moving camera(s), e.g., mounted on a vehicle or robot. It makes use of an available 3D model of the traversed scene to project segmented 3D objects into each camera frame to obtain an initial annotation of the associated 2D image, which is followed by manual refinement by the user. The refined annotation can be transferred to the next consecutive frame using optical flow estimation. We have evaluated the efficiency of the proposed framework during the production of a labelled outdoor dataset. The analysis of annotation times shows that up to 43% less effort is required on average, and the consistency of the labelling is also improved.

In this work, we use deep neural autoencoders to segment oil spills from Side-Looking Airborne Radar (SLAR) imagery. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has been much exploited for ocean surface monitoring, especially for oil pollution detection, but few approaches in the literature use SLAR. Our sensor consists of two SAR antennas mounted on an aircraft, enabling a quicker response than satellite sensors for emergency services when an oil spill occurs. Experiments on TERMA radar were carried out to detect oil spills on Spanish coasts using deep selectional autoencoders and RED-nets (very deep Residual Encoder-Decoder Networks). Different configurations of these networks were evaluated and the best topology significantly outperformed previous approaches, correctly detecting 100% of the spills and obtaining an F 1 score of 93.01% at the pixel level. The proposed autoencoders perform accurately in SLAR imagery that has artifacts and noise caused by the aircraft maneuvers, in different weather conditions and with the presence of look-alikes due to natural phenomena such as shoals of fish and seaweed.
