This study explores contemporary newspaper narratives on the devastation caused by the earthquake of 1926 in Padang Panjang, West Sumatra. These narratives become crucial amid the difficulty of finding historical statistical data for disaster studies that depict the chaotic situation caused by natural disasters in the past. Historical methods and methodologies were used in this study to combine fragments of information found in contemporary newspapers, especially those discussing the situation of societies and the policies of the Dutch colonial government in dealing with the earthquake of 1926 in Padang Panjang. This study hopefully opens new insights for the development of disaster disciplines and provides access to the development of the study of the history of disasters in developing countries, particularly in Indonesia.

In 2010, the Excellence in Research for Australia assessment programme developed a controversial ranking of journals that was used as a proxy for the quality of the articles in those journals. The ranking was later abandoned because of serious practical and principled problems. The demand for ranking continues, however, from researchers and university managers. For Humanities disciplines, ranking has advantages over citation analysis, especially in assessing recent work. This article discusses the emergence of journal ranking in Australia, especially as it has affected the discipline of History, and concludes by outlining how a ranking might responsibly be carried out.

Scientific understanding of the natural world provides a basis for environmental policies around the world. Science, however, describes the way the world works, rather than prescribing what humans should do. Environmental policies arise from human interests and values, rather than from science itself. The diversity of human interests and values means that environmental policies are often a matter of political contestation. In this contestation, unexpected coalitions of interest sometimes arise. This chapter examines policies relating to nature conservation, with special attention to Indonesia, to demonstrate the diverse range of interests and values that can sometimes coalesce over specific environmental issues.
